The State Hasn’t Changed. God Bless Them.

Portrait of Jen Chaney

Thomas Lennon enters the dressing room where seven of his cohorts in the sketch-comedy troupe The State are hanging out, recovering from the first night of a three-night run at the Palladium Times Square and preparing to perform again in 90 minutes. He has bad news. “The testing of the good smoke machine is, they think, what set off the smoke alarm,” he says, referencing an incident that interrupted rehearsal earlier on this Tuesday afternoon. “So we don’t get to use it. It’s a bit of a bummer.”

Annoyed murmurs and at least one “What the fuck?” ripple around the room. Fog appears in the opening of the show, which leads into “The Jew, the Italian and the Redhead Gay,” a send-up of stereotype-perpetuating sitcoms and one of the more popular sketches from the group’s influential ’90s MTV series, also called The State . Later, the fog accentuates the arrival of Barry (Lennon) and Levon (Michael Ian Black), two cheeseballs who became quasi-famous on the original series by trying to make utter nonsense sound sensual (“Awwww, yeah”). Back in the ’90s, Barry and Levon celebrated the existence of $240 worth of pudding. In the version updated for The State’s “Breakin’ Hearts and Dippin’ Balls” tour that stopped in New York this week, they seductively try to sell reversible mortgages.

If there’s no fog in either of those moments, the audience likely won’t notice. But that doesn’t matter to these sketch perfectionists who have spent more than three decades treating absurdity with the seriousness a brain surgeon usually reserves for the operating table. Their MTV show, which ran for four seasons in 1994 and 1995, treated the utterly silly with an almost intellectual, committed rigor, apparent in sketches like “The U.S. Men’s Bikini Thong Rollerblading Team,” about a group of male Rollerbladers who perform classic dramas of the 1930s and ’40s while skating in, yes, bikini thongs (it’s slyly referenced in the current live show), or “Tenement,” reprised for this tour, in which Kerri Kenney-Silver, Ken Marino, and Joe LoTruglio perform a bleeped version of a gritty stage drama (“Darn me to h-e-double-hockey sticks!”). Arriving on television in the wake of The Kids in the Hall , The State stood proudly as the work of subversive Gen-Xers — simultaneously lowbrow and smart, with an electrifying chemistry between the members of its ensemble.

That chemistry is still crackling, which is why, after a minute or so of lamenting the loss of the fog, these kids who found each other at New York University turn the situation into an opportunity to riff. “Do you want me to dress up as fog? And just come dance around?” offers Marino, the State player whose character, Louie, is responsible for the “dippin’ balls” reference in the tour’s name. “Yes,” Lennon immediately responds. “You come out [ adopts spooky voice ] : ‘I’m Old Man Foo-oog.” They’re joking. But also: Marino would do it. Because that’s the other thing about the guys (and one woman) in The State: They’re willing to try just about anything to get a laugh.

The 11 members — Marino, Lennon, Black, Kenney-Silver, LoTruglio, Michael Patrick Jann, Kevin Allison, David Wain, Michael Showalter, Robert Ben Garant, and Todd Holoubek — have collaborated so frequently over the years that their Wikipedia page includes a chart tracking all the times their creative paths have overlapped, whether in the Wet Hot American Summer franchise; Cops send-ups Reno 911 and Reno 911: Miami ; the movie The Ten , co-written by Marino and Wain, who also directed; and various other scripted cable or streaming series, including Children’s Hospital , Party Down , and Burning Love . But due to constantly conflicting schedules, it’s rare for all or even most of them to reunite specifically as The State. It has happened on a few one-off occasions — in 2008 at Upright Citizens Brigade in L.A.; in 2009 at SketchFest in San Francisco; in 2014 at Festival Supreme, also in L.A.; and on a Zoom call for charity in 2020. But they haven’t toured together since the MTV show ended its run. There was an extra full-circle nature to the New York performances because the Palladium, located at 1515 Broadway, shares the same address with the former MTV offices that once functioned as The State’s headquarters.

Three of the original members — Showalter, Garant, and Holoubek — were not able to join the group in New York or on their other scheduled dates in Boston, L.A., San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Seattle. ( More are slated to be announced. ) But the others have put together a lively variety show that includes multiple costume changes (Kenney-Silver notes that she wears ten different wigs), musical numbers, tons of lighting cues, and, in between sketches, videos from their MTV era, including pieces from You Wrote It, You Watch It , the MTV sketch-comedy series hosted by Jon Stewart that gave The State kids their first television break. The sets are pared down on purpose so they can be changed quickly — there’s a few tables or chairs, if that, in each sketch, and the backdrops are projected onto the video screen behind them. But the pace of it is brisk, and feels even brisker to the actors when eight of them are in the wings trying to strip in and out of ensembles with only two assistants to help them.

“The show is almost too big,” says Lennon.

“It’s tiny compared to Les Miz ,” deadpans LoTruglio. “But that’s about it.”

The go-for-broke quality of the performance went over well during the first Palladium performance on Monday night, where the audience included parents, spouses, aunts, cousins, and siblings of several members of The State as well as actors like Becky Ann Baker, Dylan Baker, and Paul Rudd. Outside the Palladium before the show, I asked Rudd, a co-star of Wet Hot American Summer and longtime FOTS — that’s Friend of The State — if he was excited to see this big reunion. His perfectly sarcastic response: “Was anyone really demanding this?”

Some hard-core State fans — who, based on a scan of the audience, looked a lot like the comedians they had come to see: middle-aged and white — actually were demanding this, though, and they cheered as soon as certain recognizable characters strolled onstage. That included Louie, Marino’s life of the party who, in a State sketch repeated almost verbatim, crashes the Last Supper by shouting his signature catchphrase, “I want to dip my balls in it!,” which, coincidentally, is also exactly what happens in the Bible; the Tape Kids (Black, Kenney-Silver, and LoTruglio) — people with Scotch tape plastered across their faces, obviously — who provided the Palladium’s “safety instructions”; the aforementioned Barry and Levon (an excited woman sitting behind me yelled out for $240 worth of pudding almost as soon as they showed up); two frogs (Lennon and Kenney-Silver) who sing an updated version of “Froggy Jamboree”; Allison’s Taco Man , a mailman who insists on delivering quality tacos instead of the actual mail; and the entire ensemble in the sublimely ridiculous “Porcupine Racetrack,”  a musical number set — and I can’t believe I need to explain this — at a porcupine racetrack. Lennon, who wrote the sketch in the ’90s a half-hour before a pitch meeting, even appeared in the same porcupine costume he wore on MTV, a prickly ensemble recently rediscovered in Michael Patrick Jann’s basement.

breaking hearts tour

While the performances went well, there were some technical glitches during the first show, including a couple of set changes that took place in complete silence because the Spin Doctors’ “Two Princes” didn’t play when it was supposed to. “Last night was our Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark ,” Lennon says. As a comedic perfectionist, he is exaggerating. It was not that bad.

Even The State’s deep cuts were well received, particularly Allison’s “Half-Time Hilarity,” an extremely sexual pep talk delivered in a football locker room — “You see this beard on my face? You can consider this your personal fucking parking space” — that originally appeared on The State’s album, Comedy for Gracious Living , recorded in 1996 but never released by Warner Bros. And then there was Doug, the teen slacker who says “I’m outta heeeere” and is, arguably, the most recognizable character born from The State . He was originally played by Showalter, who couldn’t be there to reprise the role. In a move emblematic of the new life the show brings to the familiar, The State circumvented this problem Monday night by inviting an audience member, a guy named Rich who works in real estate, to play the part, then berated him repeatedly for not getting it right. Rich seemed to love it.

Despite all the concerns about tech problems and faulty fog machines, the fans are what keeps The State engaged and excited to perform. Backstage on Tuesday, LoTruglio talks about a friend’s boyfriend who saw Monday’s show despite not being familiar with the MTV series. “It was clear there was such a history, and watching how much fun we had — a rare group of people who have known each other that long and have been doing it for this long — made it very entertaining for him to watch.”

Black, reclining on a sofa, jumps in: “I honestly don’t remember your name, and I feel horrible .”

Kenney-Silver, speaking very slowly, tries to help: “Joe.”

“Joe, the little Italian guy that’s always going on and on,” Lennon adds. “The little Italian guy.”

Marino, the other, taller Italian guy chimes in: “He’s on Barney Miller .”

LoTruglio corrects him: “It was Brooklyn Nine-Nine . That’s a common mistake.”

They could do this all day, and honestly, they probably do. But sometimes they allow themselves to speak from the heart about how it feels to still be cracking ball-dipping jokes with their best friends. “When I’m in the room with these guys, it feels like we’re back in the ’90s just hanging out,” says Marino. “These are my brothers and sister, and it’s a beautiful, special, magical experience.”

“I couldn’t sleep the night before [Monday’s show] at all,” Kenney-Silver adds. “The only thing I could equate it to was: Tomorrow’s Christmas . It felt like Christmas.”

From early adventures to stadium extravaganzas, these are the landmark concerts in the performing career of Elton John.

The live legend of Elton John is almost as time-honored as his career itself. After he had paid untold dues to get himself taken seriously as an aspiring singer-songwriter, his talents as a charismatic on-stage entertainer became as unforgettable as his songs.

Early concerts in Elton’s history showcase the sensitive, introspective composer of his formative years, before he blossomed into the larger-than-life character of his stadium and arena persona. This audio-visual review of one of the world’s greatest entertainers takes an affectionate amble through half a century of Elton John as a peerless showman.

Early Landmarks

Troubadour, los angeles, august 25, 1970.

The famous US live debut of a terrified but determined 23-year-old came on the summer night on which he arrived in the American consciousness. It came after he signed for that market to Uni Records and was invited to open for one of his own unsung favorites, David Ackles. But with some pulling of strings by the label, the bill was reversed, leaving Elton to headline for an audience including Quincy Jones , Brian Wilson and Mike Love of the Beach Boys , all of Crosby, Stills & Nash, Linda Ronstadt and one of John’s true heroes, then and now, Leon Russell . Elton’s new labelmate Neil Diamond introduced him.

Sir Mix-A-Lot, Riley Green, And Cher: Currently Trending Songs

Oldest bands in music: acts that defy the laws of age and time, ‘it’s ok’: one of those 15 big ones for the beach boys.

The effect of the dates was cumulative, as he played eight Troubadour shows in six days, and Bernie Taupin, already the would-be star’s writing partner of three years, described them as “the blue-touch paper for our career.” Elton himself recalled: “The atmosphere during those nights at the Troubadour was electric. Something inside me just took over. I knew this was my big moment and I really went for it.

“The energy I put into my performance, kicking out my piano stool and smashing my legs down on the piano, caught everyone off guard. It was pure rock ’n’ roll serendipity. Even before the reviews came in, we knew that something special had happened.”

Read more about Elton John’s career-changing opening night at the Troubadour.

And come in they did, led by Robert Hilburn’s storied Los Angeles Times notice that described him, among other superlatives, as “a multidirectional talent of the highest order. His music is so staggeringly original that it is obvious he is not merely operating within a given musical field (such as country or blues or rock) but, like Randy Newman and Laura Nyro among others, creating his own field.”

Royal Festival Hall, London, February 5, 1972

John was still touring the Madman Across The Water album, released only three months earlier and still in the US top 20, when they introduced his upcoming fifth LP , Honky Château . The setting, perhaps Elton’s most prestigious to date, was London’s august Royal Festival Hall.

Elton John - Rocket Man (Royal Festival Hall, London 1972)

The show opened with the rendition of the still-unreleased “Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going To Be A Long, Long Time)” that you see here, but also included existing staples such as “Border Song,” “Tiny Dancer” and “Your Song.” Indeed, he debuted the new album in full that night, a statement of intent that he would repeat by playing the whole of the brand-new Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy album at Wembley Stadium in 1975.

Stadium & Arena Extravaganzas

Madison square garden, new york, november 28, 1974.

A show that still ranks highly among Elton’s own wealth of cherished memories. He had first played at Madison Square Garden the year before, but this first of a two-night run was the celebrated occasion on which he persuaded his friend John Lennon to join the band on stage. The Beatle was, nervously, keeping a promise he made at the time of the pair’s collaboration on “Whatever Gets You Thru The Night,” when Lennon vowed to appear live with Elton if the song made No.1 in the US.

I Saw Her Standing There (Live From Madison Square Garden, USA/1974)

No one could dream that this would be Lennon’s last-ever live appearance. But the three-song cameo that included this early Beatles rocker, first sung by “an old, estranged fiancé of mine called Paul ,” was an incredible feature in a momentous 21-song show, rapturously received by 20,000 people.

Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, October 25, 1975

As the engagements got bigger, so Elton’s performances and costumes grew more outlandish. In two famous concerts, he became the first act to perform at Dodger Stadium since The Beatles in 1966, playing for a total of 100,000 people in the largest shows ever staged by a solo artist at the time. His parents, other relatives and neighbours and Rocket Records staffers were all flown in especially from London.

Emmylou Harris and her band and the James Gang , featuring Joe Walsh , entertained the crowd through the afternoon. Then Elton and his band stormed through a breathtaking 30-song set culminating in this cover of The Who ‘s “Pinball Wizard.” It was another preview, of a single not to be heard until the following March, as a feature of Ken Russell’s movie version of Tommy .

Elton John - Pinball Wizard (Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles 1975)

“There is no moment in my life that will ever compare to the moment when Elton first appeared on stage at Dodger Stadium,” said fan Robert J. Weedman, quoted on eltonjohn.com. “My whole young being changed in that moment. I had never experienced fans so thrilled to be seeing a performer appear on stage.

“In that moment I felt one with music and everyone in Dodger Stadium. During the first set, it was just amazing when Elton unexpectedly threw his hat high above and into the crowd. Seeing those thousands of hands lift up high into the sky along with the roar of the crowd is something I will never forget.”

Live Aid, Wembley Stadium, July 13, 1985

The so-called “Global Jukebox” changed music and the way we consume it, not to mention its achievements on behalf of starving millions in Africa. Live Aid has become most readily signified and illustrated by Queen’s unforgettable performance in the Wembley Stadium portion of the global fundraiser. But a couple of hours after they took to the stage, at 8.50pm local time, Elton arrived and, with the help of Wham! and Kiki Dee, helped towards the astonishing telethon total of $127 million raised, or over $300 million in 2020 terms.

Elton John - Bennie And The Jets (Live Aid 1985)

“Backstage at Live Aid, I had a huge area that I kind of decorated,” Elton told The Guardian years later. “I made sure there were seats for everyone, so that people who were playing could sit down and have a natter. Freddie [Mercury] came over after Queen had stolen the show. I said, “Freddie, nobody should go on after you – you were magnificent.” He said: ‘You’re absolutely right, darling, we were – we killed them.’”

Globe-Trotting Adventures

Rossiya concert hall, moscow, may 28, 1979.

Now available on UMe’s Live From Moscow album, this historic show on his A Single Man tour made Elton the first major Western star to play behind the Iron Curtain. As he performed solo and with percussionist Ray Cooper, the boundary-crossing performance (broadcast in the UK on BBC Radio 1 at the time) broadened his worldwide appeal even further.

Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting) (Live At Rossiya Concert Hall, Moscow / 1979)

“I can honestly say it has been one of the best experiences of my life,” Elton said after the Rossiya Hall concert. “It was one of the most memorable and happy tours I have been on. The last show was probably one of the best concerts I’ve ever given in my life. Working with Ray, with just the two of us on stage, was both exhilarating and challenging.”

Sydney Entertainment Centre, Australia, December 1-14, 1986

This remake of one of Elton’s signature ballads came from his run of shows in the first half of December, on his 26-date Tour De Force of Australia and New Zealand. This time around, the wigs in his wardrobe included Mozart, a mohawk, and Tina Turner. Sterling accompaniment came from the 88-piece Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Candle In The Wind (Live At Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney, Australia / 1986)

Despite a rough-voiced John suffering from severe throat problems during the run of shows, the performance of “Candle In The Wind” made the song a UK hit single for the second of three occasions.

“It was such an extraordinary event really,” the MSO’s then-concertmaster, violinist Rob John, told eltonjohn.com. “A six-week commitment dragging an extra hundred people round the countryside. In those days it was a fairly crazy type of notion. Other tours that are done here with other artists, it’s a couple of shows here and one show there, type of thing. I think most of us were actually really bloody excited from the start! Because of the opportunity to do something so different.”

21st Century Spectacles

Madison square garden, new york, october 20, 2000.

This performance at what, by now, was one of Elton’s regular haunts, was turned into the One Night Only album in what was then record time. It was released as an album, and an extended DVD, just three weeks after the event, an unheard-of turnaround at the time, with expert and nimble-fingered production by Phil Ramone.

Elton John - Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding (Live At Madison Square Garden)

As at Live Aid, Kiki Dee was again on hand to reprise “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” in a glittering show that also featured guest appearances by Ronan Keating, Bryan Adams , Anastacia and Mary J. Blige . “Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding,” the 11-minute epic from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road , provided the stirring scene-setter for an excited New York crowd.

Colosseum, Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, 2012

Elton’s first residency in Las Vegas, The Red Piano , extended to 247 shows between 2004 and 2009. But then in 2011, he mounted a second extravaganza in Sin City, The Million Dollar Piano , this time over a seven-year period (but “only” 197 shows). This performance in the Colosseum series sees Elton and his band revisiting one of his most soulful anthems of the 1970s.

Elton John - Philadelphia Freedom (Million Dollar Piano)

Vintagerock.com’s review of the subsequent DVD release said admiringly that it was “worthy of the man’s larger-than-life historic live performances and fantastic songs…wearing a gold cape, John begins the 18-song concert with a rousing ‘The Bitch Is Back’ and ‘Bennie And The Jets’ medley.

“The sound is stellar, the piano clear, backing instruments mixed perfectly (including a small string section), vocals and horns well-placed, and longtime drummer Nigel Olsson’s double-bass drum driving it all. Davey Johnstone’s guitar counters the ivories in lock-step, and back to the 70s we go.”

Botanic Park, Adelaide, December 4-5, 2019

Elton John - Farewell Tour Highlights l Adelaide, Australia

Elton’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour opened in September 2018 and had already grossed over $125 million by the end of its first leg just six months later. Here we see highlights of his soldout Adelaide shows; the vast Australasian leg continued all the way into March 2020, before even he had to return to the pavilion, as coronavirus put paid to the schedule for the rest of the year.

Dodger Stadium, November 17, 19, and 20, 2022

Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Live From Dodger Stadium, USA / 2022)

Elton made his triumphant return to the scene of his 1975 landmark as he said goodbye to his American audience on his resumed  Farewell Yellow Brick Road  tour. “As much as he’s taken his sweet time in leaving the road,” wrote Chris Willman in Variety, “ Thursday’s show made it feel like he’s actually sprinting to the finish. This was John in top vigorous form.” Indeed, nothing can, or ever will, dilute the performing legacy of Captain Fantastic.
