10 Things You Should *Never* Do on a Cruise, According to Someone Who's Been on 8 Ships

I still remember my very first cruise and how I had no idea what to expect. I was completely clueless on how to navigate such a huge vessel. Six years later (and eight cruises under my belt), I can confidently say I know a thing or two about setting sail. Whether you prefer Royal Caribbean or Princess , here are 10 things you should never do on a cruise—plus, one thing you must consider to make your vacation worthwhile.

1. Don't Wait to Book Shore Excursions

On my second cruise, I made the mistake of not booking any shore excursions. I thought, ‘I can do it on the ship, it’ll be fine.’ But once I stepped on the ship and tried to book my desired activity, I was disappointed to find horseback riding was completely booked for the entire trip. So if you’re looking to do something specific ( some whale watching perhaps?), don’t wait until you get on board. As soon as you book your cruise, their website often lets people purchase excursions at least 60 to 90 days in advance. Most cruise lines would also let you know closer to your trip, which ones aren’t available anymore. As for trying out third party vendors, I strongly suggest sticking with the cruise lines since they guarantee you will get back on the ship regardless of any delays.

2. Don’t Pick a Cruise Based On One Port

Sometimes itineraries can change, so don’t be married to just one port on your trip. On the first cruise I booked, I was thrilled that Puerto Rico was on the itinerary. However, a month before boarding the island’s recent hurricanes forced the cruise line to change plans. So my advice is to be prepared for changes since you can’t control the weather.

3. Don’t Book a Flight the Day Of Your Cruise

Some travelers might disagree with this tip, especially when many cruise lines offer a flight and cruise bundle, along with a shuttle to the port. However, I find that arriving a day before my cruise gives me peace of mind and plenty of time to get on the ship the next day without fear of missing the boat…literally. Try to factor flight delays, traffic or sleeping past alarms. The last thing you want to do is miss your cruise.

The same applies for the returning leg of your trip. On the last day of your cruise, I recommend booking a flight for the afternoon or nighttime. While most cruises arrive to the port in the morning, you should still account for going through custom and/or disembarkation processes. Although you may be given a time slot to leave the ship, anything can change, so give yourself ample time to head to the airport.

4. Don't Pack Only for Poolside Activities

Speaking of weather…it doesn’t hurt to pack a light jacket. Or, if you’re looking to do some ice skating on a Royal Caribbean ship, it’s required to wear long pants, so pack some of those, too. Most ships even have specialty restaurants and specific formal nights, so your flip flops and cover up is not going to make the cut. Luckily, I made a helpful guide on what to wear on a cruise to make packing a little easier.

5. Don't Skip the Muster Drill

Fun fact: A ship can’t leave until all passengers have done the muster drill, so don’t be that person. Before you hit the buffet, or even before getting on the ship, make sure you complete the muster drill—and it’s not optional, folks. The muster drill is for passengers to learn about the emergency procedures, like how to put on a life jacket and where your meet-up location is. It may seem tedious, but it’s crucial to know the protocols in case something happens. Whether it’s from a live instructor or a video, it only takes a few minutes. You'll receive instructions via email or the cruise line's app before your trip and you can complete it anytime before the ship is ready to sail. So get this done and then the fun can begin. I almost missed a muster drill and got a letter in my room that it needed to be completed.

6. Don’t Wait to Enjoy Amenities

Once you book your cruise, you'll receive an email to choose a time slot to check in and go on board. I suggest getting the earliest boarding time, so you can drop off your luggage with the staff and start enjoying your vacation. What is the first thing to do on a cruise? Chances are your rooms aren’t ready yet, so why not spend some time relaxing instead? I like grabbing a drink and snacking by the pool. The buffet is typically a hot spot, so anywhere that I can grab a quick slice of pizza or a burger works to avoid the rush.

I also find it’s helpful to pack a change of clothes and a swimsuit in my carry-on, so I’m ready to dip in the pool for a bit. If it starts feeling a bit too crowded in the lido deck, consider a self-guided tour starting on the top floor of the ship. There’s no way you’re going to remember everything (even after a week it’s nearly impossible), but it’ll be nice to familiarize yourself with the restaurants, activities and venues around the ship.

7. Don't Waste Time On a WiFi Package

Look, the internet packages are expensive, and even if you have one, high-speed coverage can be undependable. Unless WiFi is included in your package, I would skip and just enjoy the vacation phone-free. Honestly it’s been nice to unplug and use my phone only to take photos. Though if you need your Insta fix, I personally found some phone companies, like T-Mobile, that work in most ports. But again, it’s not always going to be reliable during vacation.

8. Don’t Disregard the Daily Programs

My favorite thing is heading back to my room after a long day and seeing a new daily program waiting for me. This large pamphlet has everything that will be happening around the ship. You’ll find all the activities (like trivia and game nights), evening shows, drinks of the day and even times of all the restaurants/attractions. I always have this handy to plan my day and make sure I’m hitting all the spots. If you’re not keen on holding a paper around all day, most cruise lines also have it on their app or on screens near the elevator. Let the daily programs be your guide to a fun-filled week.

9. Don't Ignore Port Times

I can’t be the only one that watches videos of people running down the gangway just as their ship sails away without them. Don’t run the risk of missing your cruise and getting stuck at a port. Consider walking back to the ship at least an hour (heck, an hour and a half) before it leaves. Simply put: Give yourself enough time to return to the ship, because yes, they will leave you.

10. Don't Assume All Cruise Lines Are the Same

Although most cruise lines follow the same protocols, they all have unique activities, amenities and ports. I’ve been on four different cruise lines and I’ve learned some ships are best for families , while others are great for adults . The layouts, food and events are also strikingly different. So while you might pack the same, grab an early flight or enjoy time near a pool, don’t assume they will provide the same experience.

The One Thing You *Should* Do: Take the Food, Drink and Amenity Packages Seriously

People tend to overlook the drinking package. Don't be like that! Even if you're not into booze, there are beverage packages that include things beyond alcohol. If you need your daily dose of Coca Cola or chai latte, look for an unlimited packages that includes those things. And you should note: On most cruises, everyone in your cabin is subject to the same drinking package.

Finally, not all amenities are included in every package. Whether you want to relax at the spa, take a fitness class or indulge in premium ice cream, these special amenities are usually not included in your package and will be an extra charge. Overall, do your research and follow these tips and you’ll be a seasoned cruiser in no time.

A cruise ship worker from South Africa was arrested Tuesday in Alaska's capital city, accused of attacking a woman and two security guards with scissors on board the vessel, according to authorities.

The U.S. attorney's office says the man is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. Online court records do not show an attorney for the 35-year-old man.

According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, the man was recently hired by a cruise line and joined the ship, the Norwegian Encore, in Seattle on Sunday. The ship set off that day for a weeklong trip with scheduled stops in Alaska ports, including the capital of Juneau, and British Columbia.

The alleged incident happened west of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, as the ship was sailing to Alaska. According to the affidavit, during the 'late evening" Sunday, ship personnel saw the man trying to deploy a lifeboat, and he was taken by security to a medical center for an evaluation.

While there, he “became irrational and attempted to leave,” and “physically attacked” a guard and a nurse, the affidavit states. He ran into another room, where he grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed a woman who was being examined, as well as two guards who tried to intervene before being subdued and held in a “shipboard jail,” the affidavit says. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

The ship arrived in Juneau on Tuesday, when he was arrested by the FBI, the U.S. attorney's office says.

An American teenager disappeared Thursday from a cruise ship in Germany, police said.

Fourteen-year-old Aydin Brown has not been seen since 7 a.m. Thursday when he left the Caribbean Princess in Rostock-Warnemünde, a port town on the Baltic Sea, police said.

Brown stands about five-feet-seven inches tall and has long dark hair. He was last seen wearing a dark jacket, dark pants and retro shoes, police said.

No one with the Caribbean Princess could be immediately reached Friday afternoon for comment.

Police are also searching for a witness who may have seen the boy on the morning of his disappearance. The witness is described by police as between 20 and 25 years old. His stature is slim and he has long hair which was braided into a ponytail.

He was last seen wearing a light shirt, blue pants and a black jacket. He wore brown headphones, police said.

A 14-year-old American boy who  walked away from the Caribbean Princess cruise ship  after its scheduled stop at a German port more than three days ago has been found safe , his grandmother said Saturday.

Aydin Brown had been on the cruise with his grandmother, but left the ship after it docked at Rostock-Warnemünde on Thursday morning, authorities said.

State and local police on Saturday distributed three new photos of the teenager as their regional search remained underway. Two of the photos, captured from security video, included an unknown man who appeared to be speaking with Brown.

In an earlier statement, Rostock municipal police said they wanted to speak to the man or anyone who can identify him.

The two walked toward Warnemünde church square about 7:45 a.m., Thursday, police said.

"We are delighted that Aydin Brown has been found safe and sound," the cruise line said in a statement Saturday. "We extend our heartfelt gratitude to German authorities for their swift response and exceptional efforts in locating Aydin after he disembarked in Warnemunde last Thursday morning."

The company said Brown has been reunited with family.

Brown's grandmother left the ship Thursday night amid the first hours of the search for Brown, the cruise line said Friday, and the company flew his mother to Germany.

“We understand the distress this situation has caused and will continue to provide ongoing on-site support to the family during this challenging time,” Princess Cruises said at the time.

According to cruise ship tracker  CruiseMapper , the 12-day journey travels the Baltic Sea, with destinations that include Copenhagen, Denmark and Stockholm, Sweden. The roundtrip cruise started in Southampton, England, on June 30 and was scheduled to return on July 12, according to the site.

A passenger has died while on board a Royal Caribbean ship that left Miami for a nine-month "Ultimate World Cruise," the company said Tuesday.

"A guest sailing on board Serenade of the Seas has sadly passed away," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement to NBC News . "We are actively providing support and assistance to the guest's loved ones at this time. Out of the privacy of the guest and their family, we have nothing further to share at this time."

The passenger's identity and details surrounding their death weren't released.

Serenade of the Seas left Miami on Dec. 10, 2023, on the Ultimate World Cruise, a 274-night, seven-continent voyage that stops at 60 countries and 11 world wonders.

In mid-August, a TikToker stumbled across a shop and café in Beaumaris, Anglesey . She couldn’t wait to film and post wait she found. “Calling all Swifties,” she enthused on her clip. “I think I may have just found the shop of our DREAMS!”

Since then, August café – the name is a nod to one of Taylor Swift’s best-known songs – has become the go-to place for fans. Not just from Wales either – they been coming from the rest of the UK and beyond.

“We had some people in from Germany the other day,” said business owner Lottie Summers. “I’ve tried to tell people they can go on the website to order things if they like but lots of people just want to visit and it’s just become a destination in itself.”

Now the European leg of the American pop star’s Era’s Tour has come to the end, Swifties shorn of excitement seem to be focusing on the café. Based just across the road from Beaumaris Castle, it has soared in popularity in recent weeks after becoming a social media hotspot. Being Taylor Swift-inspired, it offers themed goodies and merchandise – and people are absolutely loving it. Even cruise ship passengers are making a beeline.

August café is attached to The Mock Turtle shop, an Alice in Wonderland reference, which is a big draw in itself. But it the café’s Swifties offer that has driven the recent uplift in interest and trade, reports WalesOnline .

Ironically, Lottie was not originally a huge Taylor Swift fan herself and, in her shop, she had begun focussing on Harry Styles gifts instead. But when the Swifties craze took off even more, she saw an opportunity.

“I love her now!” said Lotti, whose favourite Swift song is, of course, August. She has to be – the café plays Taylor Swift music all day long. “Everyone who works here is Taylor Swift obsessed as well. One of our girls in the coffee shop loves her loads, and drives an hour to come and work here. And she makes great coffee too!" Join the North Wales Live Whatsapp community now

Lottie continued: “After the TikTok was made it just went viral so it’s all been growing into a monster over the last few weeks – we’ve had huge deliveries from the Netherlands and America.

We also did an advert with the lady who made the TikTok who came in for afternoon tea and put it on Facebook and it just exploded. We’re only tiny but we are now able to employ about eight people.”

Lotti uses local suppliers and bakers for her coffee shop, which gives customers a boost of positivity when spend time there. “Everyone just leaves with a massive smile on their face”, she said.

“When people see the hand-painted Taylor Swift biscuits they get so excited and come in and buy them in the dozen. We can’t keep up. The cruise ships are in at the moment and when people come in they are like, ‘Taylor Swift? Here?’ They just love it."

“When people come in, all they want to talk about is Taylor. All day the music’s playing, and we’ve just had an artist come in and decorate the walls with a typewriter and the Christian Louboutin boots that she wears on stage. The whole place is full of drawings and artwork of Taylor.

“Even the coffee cups have got Taylor on them. Everyone that comes in is really sweet and they swap friendship bracelets with the staff and everything. I’ve not met a nasty Swiftie yet.”

When August café opened in mid-July, the first 13 customers were handed a Taylor Swift-themed goodie bag. Swiftie cream teas soon followed and now there’s everything from themed jewellery to mugs and stationery.

Before launching the adjacent shop after the pandemic, Lotti used to run an accountancy company. But since leaving that life behind, she has not looked back.

She added: “I sold the company about two years ago, and we’d opened the shop just before I sold up. We came out of lockdown and I was just sick of accountancy because I was doing like 80-hour weeks during lockdown.

“I’d always loved collecting artist’s memorabilia as a kid, so I just thought I’m going to open a shop and make it a bit quirky and a bit different. It was always very pop art-led with The Beatles and a lot of ABBA and funky stuff. Then I just started doing Taylor Swift at the same time as Harry Styles and it just took it to another level.”
