Dream World Travel owed more than £10m when it collapsed

Bookholidaysonline.com and Bookonlineflights.com parent had just £25,000 in assets when it failed and owned money to the likes of Ecommpay, Paysafe, Checkout, Barclays, The Holiday Team and KAYAK

Liquidators have confirmed operator and agency Dream World Travel owed more than £10.2 million and held just £25,000 in assets when it ceased trading last July.

The cost of the collapse to the Air Travel Trust Fund (ATT) is put at more than £6.1 million. The company, based in west London, was not an Abta member, but held an Iata licence and had traded since 2006 selling mainly long-haul travel. It held an Atol for 4,450 travellers.

Its affairs have proved difficult to unravel. The CAA opened a claims portal for customers in August after delaying the process “because of anomalies”.

Liquidators Opus Restructuring only issued a ‘statement of affairs’ in late December. This reveals the company owes more than £1.3 million to trade creditors, including almost £850,000 to three companies – Kayak, Brightsun Travel and The Holiday Team. It owes Iata more than £52,000 and Barclays £200,000.

In addition, it had run up significant debts with online payment companies, including Ecommpay (£2 million), Paysafe (£400,000) and Checkout (£380,000).

A considerable number of Dream World Travel customers appear to have been left without air tickets or Atol Certificates for flights they paid for in full. Customer creditors are owed sums ranging up to £5,586.

The cost to the ATT is put at £6,092,733. The CAA declined to comment and Opus has so far failed to answer Travel Weekly’s queries. But an industry source with knowledge of the failure described the company’s record-keeping as “abysmal”. It is understood the CAA has accepted about 2,100 customer claims to date and more are expected.

Dream World Travel’s most-recent accounts for the 12 months to June 2021 showed it had £2.3 million in assets against £1.9 million owed to creditors and reported a loss for the pandemic-hit year of just £20,000.

The ATT held less than £20.6 million in March 2020 and gave notice in September 2021, when it last issued accounts, that subsequent failures would cost it £14 million. The fund would have been swelled by the Atol Protection Contributions on bookings through last year.

Fewer operator collapses, but more refunds in 2023, says caa.

Gary Noakes

Eight Atol operator collapses in 2023 are likely to cost the CAA’s consumer fund £5.3 million.

eCard

The number of collapses dropped steeply from the 15 in 2022; however, these cost the Air Travel Trust (ATT) only £2.4 million. For the first time in three years, a small number of passengers – 15 – required repatriation last year, with around 17,000 customers refunded.

The largest 2023 failure was Dream World Travel, which cost the ATT £3.3 million after refunding 14,615 customers. Live Holidays incurred a £596,000 call and others, including Arena Tours, Fun Travel and Explore Montenegro incurred a total expenditure of £1.3 million.

The £2.50 Atol Protection Contribution, which funds the ATT, brought in £65.8 million from 26.6 million passengers, compared with £37.8 million in 2022 from 15 million passengers. In 2023, the Trust also received £1.2 million in liquidation dividends from the 2010 collapse of Goldtrail Travel.

The Trust said: “The performance of travel companies is getting close to full recovery.”  However, it added:

“Balance sheets broadly continue to show signs of weakness and still need strengthening and repair. Cash flows continue to be stretched by the servicing and repayment of higher debt burdens.”

The CAA added the Trust had £169 million of cash reserves and £75 million of commercial borrowing facilities.

It added: “To the extent that those resources may be insufficient to meet the costs of a large or multiple failures, the Trustees’ expectation is that HMG will provide additional financial support to the ATT as necessary.”

Customers of bust dream world travel face refund delay.

dream world travel collapse

‘Anomalies’ in the data supplied by Dream World Travel to the aviation regulator mean customers face a delay in claiming a refund.

Customers with outstanding bookings with the West London travel agent face another setback following its collapse last week.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it is currently assessing the booking data supplied by Dream World Travel which it needs to process claims for ATOL protected bookings.

However, the CAA said there have been “data anomalies” meaning there will be a delay in opening the claims process for anyone who booked an ATOL protected trip.

ATOL is managed by the CAA and is underpinned by the government. It is a protection scheme afforded to holidaymakers with flight-based bookings which refunds, repatriates and reimburses travellers if the company fails.

The CAA said it will give an update to holidaymakers once it opens its online claims portal. It will then “start to process claims as quickly as possible”. An update is expected on Monday 8 August.

However, it added: “Because of the anomalies, there may be delays with some large or complex bookings.

“We thank consumers for their patience and advise them to visit www.ATOL.org for any further updates.”

Dream World Travel also traded as Al-umrah, Biznessclassflights, Bookholidaysonline, Bookonlineflights and Detltd.

If you booked via any of these trading names and do not hold ATOL protection, you need to see if you can get a refund before turning to Opus Restructuring LLP.

One method is via Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 for transactions over £100. This allows you to raise a claim against your credit provider if:

  • You paid some (or all) of the cost by credit card.
  • The cash price of the services is more than £100 but not more than £30,000.

If the above applies, contact your credit card provider or bank to request a refund under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. You should tell your provider that the company failed to provide your service, cannot issue a refund, your booking is not ATOL protected, and the company has engaged insolvency practitioners to placing the company into liquidation.

If you can’t get a refund under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, you may be able to claim under the chargeback scheme rules.

Chargeback is a transaction reversal made to dispute a card transaction and secure a refund for the purchase made by debit card.

There is a time limit on chargeback claims – typically 120 days from the transaction processing date, or from when you expected to receive the service if it’s being delivered.

If you paid via instalments under Fly Now Pay Later (authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority), Opus said the transaction could be covered by Section 75 of the CCA. This allows you to raise a claim against Fly Now Pay Later as above.

This American Said He Had to Pay $2,400 to Get Home After Travel Company Thomas Cook Collapsed

T he collapse of one of the world’s oldest travel agencies has impacted an estimated 600,000 travelers all over the world on Monday—including some Americans.

Thomas Cook collapsed into liquidation in the early hours of Monday morning after rescue talks failed to secure $250 million in contingency funding, leaving many thousands who paid for vacations with the company without a return ticket home.

“We are sorry to inform you that all holidays and flights provided by these companies have been canceled and are no longer operating,” the Thomas Cook said, adding that all Thomas Cook retail shops have also closed.

Thomas Cook is a British company, but it attracted customers from all over the world, particularly Europe.

British stranded travelers are now directed to turn to the U.K.’s Civil Aviation Authority—which is working to fly back passengers who booked their flights with the travel agency and were due back to the U.K. between Sept. 23 and Oct. 6.

On Monday, Condor Airlines , a German airline subsidiary to Thomas Cook, said that it currently had 240,000 customers abroad awaiting flights to return home.

The travel agency also advised passengers who were due to fly out of the U.K. with Thomas Cook Airlines that their flights were canceled.

While few Americans are likely to be impacted, at least one Florida resident said he spent more than $2,000 to get home after booking a trip to Scotland with the company.

BBC Scotland spoke to American Joe Datolli, who was stuck at Glasgow Airport with his mother Sally waiting for a flight back to Orlando.

“It’s been frustrating… While we were asleep, ready to head back in the morning, they went out of business and there’s nobody to be seen,” he said.

Datolli told the BBC that he and his mother were able to book a flight to Orlando from Dublin but it ended up costing them nearly $2,400 dollars more.

“As we’re standing here trying to book another flight the prices keep climbing or the seats keep getting taken. It’s becoming more and more difficult,” he said.

The collapse of the agency has also affected thousands of employees.

In a statement, Thomas Cook Chief Executive Peter Fankhauser, apologized to customers and employees.

“I would like to apologize to our millions of customers, and thousands of employees, suppliers and partners who have supported us for many years. Despite huge uncertainty over recent weeks, our teams continued to put customers first, showing why Thomas Cook is one of the best-loved brands in travel,” he said. “This marks a deeply sad day for the company which pioneered package holidays and made travel possible for millions of people around the world.”

Here is what to know about Thomas Cook:

Why did Thomas Cook collapse?

Faced with Brexit, poor mergers and increased competition, the 178-year-old company finally fell to its demise on Monday.

Key to its downfall is Thomas Cook’s merger with MyTravel, a U.K.-based package travel company, in 2007. What had initially started out with hope, ended up in disaster. Thomas Cook ended up with huge debts that proved impossible to manage as, MyTravel had only made a profit once since 2001. The impact of the merger came to a head in May after Thomas Cook reported a record loss of £1.5 billion ($1.85 billion) and a steep drop in summer sales.

Thomas Cook also faced new competition from lower cost rival Jet2Holidays, putting the company’s profits under fresh pressure . Previously, the market had been split between Thomas Cook and Tui. Within two months, Thomas Cook had to issue two profit warnings .

Brexit didn’t help their situation either—the original March 29, 2019 Brexit deadline meant that people were nervous about booking holidays .

In August this year, there was hope that Thomas Cook could break free from disaster after it agreed to a $1.1 billion rescue deal with Fosun, a China-based investment company, Thomas Cook’s biggest shareholder and its debtholders.

However, as of Monday, Thomas Cook collapsed into liquidation after talks with shareholders, lenders and the U.K. government failed to come up with a rescue plan after the company’s banks demanded a further $250 million.

The agency was a popular one-stop-shop for travelers—known for its all-inclusive travel packages: the agency would book flights, hotels and tours for travelers.

Marc-David L. Seidel, professor at the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business says travel agencies like Thomas Cook have become less relevant and necessary for travelers during the internet age.

“The rise of online travel information shifted power in the industry so that individual consumers no longer had to rely on brick and mortar travel agencies for expertise as much,” he tells TIME. “This intensified as the internet transitioned to more of an online travel community model where individual travelers share information about everything travel related to each other. That readily available and detailed information further reduced the power of travel agencies which had traditionally been the primary source of such expertise.”

Seidel adds that the rise of Airbnb might have also played a part.

“The growth trend of small travel providers such as individuals offering up rental units through internet platforms also puts pressure on organizations like Thomas Cook as a portion of their revenue was based on lodging,” he says.

Are American travelers affected?

While the bulk of Thomas Cook customers were based in Europe, the agency offered services to major U.S cities including New York City, Orlando and San Fransisco.

The State Department says that it is not able to track how many U.S. citizens are currently affected because American are not required to register their travel to a foreign country.

A State Department spokesperson tells TIME that the agency is currently monitoring the situation and that travelers should make their own arrangements to return to the United States.

“If Americans are destitute and without resources to get back to the United States, they should contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country where they are traveling to help them get in touch with family members or to evaluate other options,” a state department spokesperson said.

Frederic Dimanche, the director at the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Ryerson University tells TIME that the effect on American passengers will be “not much” and that agency had a limited presence in the U.S.—with most of the company’s business coming from the U.K., Germany and Scandinavian countries.

“Thomas Cook had offices in the U.S., but beyond that most operations are European… this will likely be inconsequential for (travelers),” he says.

Seidel also says that the agency going out of business will most likely not have too much of an effect on American travelers.

“They have limited service in some cities—basically, it’s major cities and the leisure market, and a lot of that service would be outbound rather than inbound, so people visiting the States from Europe and a lot of their stuff was offered as packages,” he says.

Wouldn't recommend

I was regretting paying for the ticket through DWT. Took me 4 days to get my eticket, luckily I was given my eticket. Should of been Instant eticket on the day, not waiting for a few days then receiving it. But I wasn't convinced after reading so many bad reviews. so I decided to contact the airline direct, they were more helpful then the agency were. Airline confirmed my ticket and also gave me a ticket and receipt from their airline company. I have tried to contact DWT on the phone lines, WhatsApp doesn't work, so hard to connect. Or sometimes they won't answer. Only interested if your buying a ticket. Then you'll hear nothing. I had response from DWT on email lately but so hard to contact them. Gave me a ball ache trying to get the ticket and contact. I'm going to buy a ticket direct from the airline instead next time even if it cost £50-£150 more. Atleast that way I know I haven't been scammed and my money hasn't gone missing. I'm giving 2* rating cause I did get my eticket from dwt but never again. The hassle and stress caused. I wouldnt recommend in my opinion. They need to be honest with there customers not fobbed them off.

The lowest of the low

The lowest of the low, they should be used car salesmen, the flight booking part of their business went insolvent in July, they just didn’t bother to inform their customers. We were due to fly to Bali tomorrow but during the online check-in we realise we no longer have a booking. Now we will have a fight to get our money back. Don’t use this company for anything, we will never use them again, they are an utter disgrace!

Date of experience : September 15, 2022

Please Stop wasting your time!!

It is very worrying to see people still expecting to hear from Dream World Travel or considering taking legal action which would be pointless. The company ceased to trade in July, so writing letters, emails or attempting to call are all a waste of your time. Please follow the advice in my review at the top of the page, either claim from your card issuer or claim through the CAA.

Dream World travel is a true travel…

Dream World travel is a true travel agent in London but as all travel agents. Went into financial difficulties Any one can actually view their financial report on HMRV and learn more Now they went under.. yes they should not operate.. people should really look at reviews before purchasing from none trusted names . If you have purchased tickets from the and paid ATOL Then you will get your money back even if flights only ! All what you’d have to do is go the civil aviation authority and submit a claim ones all investigation about them completed.

'We saved £40k to travel the world by making a few lifestyle changes'

A couple have quit their nine-to-five jobs and made major lifestyle changes which allowed them to £40,000 to use to travel the world and share it with their followers as they go

Megan and Alex in front of a skyline

  • 14:23, 28 Aug 2024

A couple who decided to quit their jobs and travel the world have explained how they made their globe-trotting dreams a reality.

Megan d’Ardenne and her partner, Alex Lee, packed in their day jobs to travel across South East Asia after a walk in Battersea Park to see the Buddhist Peace Pagoda inspired them. The couple, who will be setting off on their trip in October, set a goal to save £40,000, and hit the hefty sum by making some lifestyle changes.

"The first major step was moving in together. This decision not only brought us closer as a couple but also drastically reduced our living expenses. As well as saving a substantial amount on bills each month, living together meant we no longer had to travel across London to see each other, saving both time and money," Megan said.

Have you quit your job to travel the world? Email us at [email protected]

The couple also made a conscious effort to stop unnecessary spending. "We stopped going on holidays, opting instead to save that money for travelling. When visiting friends and family, we chose cheaper modes of transport — like coaches instead of trains," shared Alex.

"Sure, a coach journey takes longer, but when the return fare is £15 compared to £50 on the train, the savings are worth it."

Being conscious of what they were spending was also enforced into their daily lives, as the couple stopped buying new clothes, resisted the temptation of unnecessary takeaway coffees, avoided Uber rides, and started buying supermarket own-brand foods.

"When we did go out, we opted for cheaper drinks, a £14 double G&T suddenly seemed extravagant compared to a £6 pint. We also sold our old clothes on second-hand sites to generate extra cash and slim down our wardrobes, knowing that everything would need to go into storage anyway while we travelled," Megan said.

Another unexpected perk came from Megan and Alex's personal food blogs — ComeDineWithMegs and AlexsFoodieFinds . "Being invited to review restaurants meant that our 'date nights' were often free or heavily discounted, which helped us save even more," explained Alex.

"Over the course of two years, these small but consistent savings added up, and we were thrilled to reach our £40,000 target." After reaching their goal, the couple turned their attention to planning and organising their trip. In October their first stop will be Bangkok, in Thailand.

"We’ve rented an Airbnb for the entire month, allowing us time to acclimatise and explore the vibrant city at our own pace. Although the flight was pricey, the cost of living in Asia is significantly lower than in London," Megan said.

Whilst the couple opted for cheaper options over the two years they saved for their trip, they have decided to splurge a little on the apartment they will be staying in, in Bangkok. "[We have opted for] a luxury flat with a rooftop pool and gym, and 24/7 security. Although we could have chosen a cheaper flat, the cost is still less than half of what we were paying in London," Megan continued.

Following Bangkok, the couple will explore the rest of Thailand and aim to spend their Christmas and New Year on the beautiful beaches in Southern Thailand. In the New Year, the couple will then journey to Cambodia, followed by Vietnam, Laos, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

"As our departure date approaches, the excitement is building. Yes, quitting our jobs was a bold move, but we have no doubt that it was the right one. We’ve worked hard to save and plan for this trip, and now it’s time to live the dream we’ve been chasing for so long," Alex said.

The food and travel enthusiasts will be sharing their journey and adventures on their Instagram accounts, ComeDineWithMegs and AlexsFoodieFinds .

‘Data anomalies’ hold up Dream World Travel claims

  • Share by email

The Civil Aviation Authority has disclosed that “data anomalies” are delaying claims from the collapse of Dream World Travel.

The aviation regulator is assessing the booking data supplied by the west London-based company which will be used to process claims for Atol protected bookings.

Dream World Travel, which was licensed to carry 4,450 passengers this summer, failed on July 26 owing customers an estimated £11 million.

The CAA said in an update today (Friday): “We understand the impact that the failure of this company will have on the customers involved.

“Unfortunately, in the case of Dream World Travel, based in west London, there have been data anomalies meaning there will be a delay in opening the claims process for anyone who booked an Atol protected trip.

“We will make a further statement when we will open our online claims portal.

“When this happens, we will start to process claims as quickly as possible, but because of the anomalies, there may be delays with some large or complex bookings.

“We thank consumers for their patience and advise them to visit www.ATOL.org for any further updates.”

Michael Holtham should stop!

Michael Holtham, the right thing to do is to suggest improvements, not say evil things to them! That is not God pleasing. Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. I hope you will confess and look at your mistakes. God is always merciful, because He loves all of us. I hope you understand and give a good reply to my message.

We've have ATOL certificate so we can claim back our ticket amount. Hopefully. Not sure if this company was fraud or went bust.

Been waiting for 8 months for my £750…

Been waiting for 8 months for my £750 refund after cancelling a Christmas eve flight 2 hours before check in. They don’t answer the phone but over email keep promising the refund will hit my account on specified dates, but it never does. From the looks of the other reviews it seems this exact experience has happened to a lot of people. Perhaps a class action would work?
