Valbona National Park

A far cry from the well-trodden paths in western Europe, you’ll find deserted footpaths and remote villages in Albania’s northern alps on our  Balkans Discovery Tour . One of the most alluring alpine valleys of Albania, Valbona National Park boasts lush canyons and wildflower meadows set amid the towering, jagged peaks of the Accursed Mountains. Hike through alpine forests, along quiet village roads and over verdant pastures while taking in the far-reaching views of the Kukaj Valley. Stop for a picnic lunch en route and savor a cup of freshly brewed mountain tea prepared by a local shepherd’s family, before feasting on a delicious traditional dinner of slow-cooked lamb. 

Butrint is regarded as one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Balkans. UNESCO listed, Butrint exhibits a long and colorful history dating back to the early Neolithic age. The site features a large Roman amphitheater, houses and thermal baths, encapsulated by lush forest on the picturesque and tranquil shores of the Vivari River. The tour was absolutely lovely, yet sometimes a bit physically challenging. The chosen guesthouses where all adequate, and run by friendly locals who understand hospitality. Shoutout to Brikena Shametaj of Choose Balkans for her considerate care.

We enjoyed a lot this self-guided hiking tour. I'd like to thank Choose Balkans' team and Brikena specifically because of their assistance and kindness before, during and after the tour. We felt really comfortable with them. The whole experience couldn't be better: the hikes and the amazing places we discovered, the accommodation, people we met... The fact of being self-guided gives you much more freedom to organise your time as you wish, without pressure. We would definitely recommend it to everyone! :)

I undertook this tour in April, out of season, but with wonderful hot sunny weather on most days. This meant that in many of the places we stayed, some of the restaurants were closed, but the advantage was that there no crowds. The tour was an excellent introduction to this fascinating country and its complicated history. Throughout the tour was very well organised and our guide Edmund was excellent - very knowledgeable and with a great personality and sense of humour. He provided the perfect balance of guided tours of the sites and free time. The tour covers quite a distance, but the coach was comfortable with plenty of space, and our driver was really excellent. The hotels used were clean and comfortable but overall the breakfasts were average. In a country where there is so much fresh fruit it was a pity not to see more of this prepared for the breakfast buffet. There was a good mixture of visits to sites of historical interest and those of natural beauty. Some, such as the amphitheatre in Durres were a little underwhelming, but others - Berat, Apollonia, Butrint and Gjirokaster were truly magnificent. I only regret that I didn't take the longer tour that included Lake Ohrid. In short, this was an excellent introduction to a country with a fascinating history, beautiful scenery and very friendly people. I look forward to returning in the future to explore more of the delights of Albania.

Albania has it all and this tour gives you a taste which will have you coming back for seconds and more. I was blessed with a truly amazing guide who figured me our immediately and knew that the day needed to be 2 halves culture and beach life and my word does this tour exceed the expectations. I mean it is hard to find a fault with Albania. Perhaps the roads need some improvement but even all the pot holes add to the experience. The food and quality is beyond what I expected. But to Albanian express they need to be commended for the amazing programme that they provide it is amazing. This is a country and company that will have you returning again and again.

If you still want to go after reading this review - the first review in 1 year.. go in october. The other months can be until 40 degrees... (to hot for cycling in the mountains) If you are a solo traveller, and have questions about the group composition, be aware that the company can give you false information to persuade you to join the tour (that happend to me - I had a very sweet group of people but 5 retired couples is a surprise when you are expecting a group of people between 40 and 60 years with two other solo travellers that are not there . I only spend 2 days on the tour, I had to leave in the morning of day 2 because of family reasons. (I didnt see or touched a bike and didnt join the group in the minivan on day 2). The company understand it, but they refuse to give my any kind of compensation. (didnt had a cancelation insurance - thats my fault, but it is still a bit of a shame "to sponsor" them without getting anything - not even a new booking, back). The company prefered that I would write this 'not to good but honest review').

A great experience cycling in this area. In particular, the Durmitor nationalpark, the Tara canyon and the descent to Kotor are absolute highlights. Despite booking a single room, you cannot always expect a single room die to hotel capacity. This was announced in good time by the tour guide.

Tour leader Dora was awesome. Very adaptable. Provided options on transport to save time & inconvenience. Gave us information on each place visited but didn't overload us like school children. Provided suggestions on places to visit, restaurants, etc during free time. Hotels & guest houses all very good. Would have liked to stay 2 nights in Berat instead of 1. It has been an amazing tour which totally changed our impression of Albania. We are so blessed to have Albi as our guide and driver. It is because of Albi that we know everything about Albania and realize what a wonderful country Albania is. We also appreciate his excellent driving skills taking us went through hilly， bumpy and rocky roads. The weather was extremely good. No rain for all 4 days and very warm temperatures is what we were looking forward to. The tourist sites selected are fantastic, which cover different types of scenery, Mountains and rivers, Sea beach and islands, historical heritages and wine yards etc. We also extremely enjoyed the Albania food all the way. In general Albania people are very friendly to tourists, they always try their best to help us. I am sure I will go to Albania again.

We enjoyed our tour in general. Erion was a knowledgeable guide whose deep love of Albania imbued our tour with a delightful spirit. Some of the hotels were better than others, but none were truly horrible. We feel that there was one too many ethnographic museums. Goshi was an awesome driver.

A good all round look at Classical Albania. Hotels were all pretty good and in handy spots for walking around the towns. Our Guide Ilir was very helpful and a fountain of knowledge. A very enjoyable, comprehensive tour.

It was a great tour. My only criticism is there really wasn’t enough time build in to see all of the suggested place due to driving times. It probably should be a couple of days longer.

Our overall experience was excellent. The itinerary was packed with lots to do and learn about Albania while also offering down time to relax and stroll around at our own pace. Communication with the organisers and guides of our trip was very easy and enjoyable. The guides were super lovely, accommodating and helpful- they were able to tailor our itinerary to include the hotels we liked and ensured we were ready to go with a pre-routed GPS.

Great tour brought to life by our excellent tour guide gezim. Excellent variety of cultural sites and nature and outdoors. Saw the major sites but also the remote and less visited ones. Hotels generally excellent including some interesting family run businesses, though hotel in Tirana less good. Best time to book the tour is spring or autumn - relatively few people book in summer so our small group tour became a private tour, which was less good for us because we enjoy the company of fellow travellers.

The tour was amazing, we’ve seen some wonderful places! Our guide Lendi was incredible made as feel safe with his careful driving all the trip. Lendi was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of history about Albania and the places we’ve been. We never felt rushed and we were given enough time to enjoy each place! Thank you so much to Lendi who really made the 3 days excellent. To be continued as we will sure go back to Albania and book the northern tour!
