A British tourist has drowned after being swept out to sea with his wife while on holiday in India.

Vijay Tulshidas Daswani, 72, died at Talpona beach in Goa on Friday evening after going for a swim just after 6pm.

Harish Raut Dessai, a police officer at Canacona police station, told The Independent the couple were dragged out to sea by a “strong wave”.

Lifeguards rushed to rescue the pair and brought them to shore. While the woman was revived, the man could not be saved.

Mr Daswani, from Mapesbury in London, was taken to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in India and are in touch with the local authorities.”

Mr Dessai said: “We received a call from a duty officer on Friday at 6.13pm informing us that a 72-year-old man named Vijay Tulshidas Daswani, a resident of Mapesbury, London, had been brought [in] dead in a case of drowning.

“At Talpona Beach, a strong wave dragged the deceased and his wife into the sea. Both were brought to the shore by the lifeguard, but Mr Vijay was declared dead at Community Health Centre Talpona.

“The dead body was taken to the district hospital in South Goa District Hospital in Margao, where the autopsy was conducted over the weekend.

“We have filed a case of unnatural death under section 174 of CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure).”

A Canacona police spokesperson added: “The couple ventured into the deep sea despite warnings.

“They began to drift and raised an alarm, when the lifeguards rushed to their rescue. The lifeguards were able to revive the wife but could not save the man.”

British tourist drowns in front of wife in Goa holiday horror

goa tourist death

An elderly British tourist has drowned in front of his wife after being swept away on a beach in India .

The 72-year-old and his wife were swimming at Talpona beach in Canacona, in the state of Goa, on Friday evening when they were carried away by a strong current, police said.

The couple were pulled ashore by life-savers on jet-skis and both were given CPR but while his wife could be resuscitated the British man was confirmed dead after being taken to a local hospital.

The married couple were regular visitors in Goa and were on holiday for 15 days before the husband's death, police added.

Police registered the death as “unnatural” and the body has been taken to a district hospital for an autopsy.

In January a British woman was found on a popular tourist beach in Goa. According to reports, a group of locals found the woman's body against the wall of a church in the tourist hotspot of Agonda, Canacona.

Earlier this month a British woman was also found dead on a popular Caribbean beach along with her husband.

The couple’s bodies were discovered on Paradise Beach in the village of L'Esterre, on the Grenadine island of Carriacou.

It is thought the British woman drowned while trying to save her husband .

Last March two British men also drowned in separate incidents while holidaying in the Maldives.

A 46-year-old man reportedly died while diving at the popular Hammerhead Shark Point off the coast of the atoll of Rasdhoo.

A second British national, aged 65, then drowned in waters off the coast of Rasdhoo.

Mary Gertrude McNamara, was found dead in her flat in Candolim, a coastal village in North Goa where she lived alone. Her body was discovered by her friends who broke open the door of the flat after she did not respond to calls and messages, police said.

The room in which the body was found was also locked from inside, they added.

Police believe that the woman may have been dead for several days before her body was discovered but are awaiting the post mortem report to confirm the same.

“We will carry out further investigation as per the autopsy report and statement of her friends,”North Goa superintendent of police Shobit Saksena told reporters.

As is the practice, the police is required to contact the respective consulate before proceeding with the post mortem examination, should the consulate choose to depute a representative to be present during the examination.

The incident comes nearly two weeks after two Russian women, one an actress, were found dead, in separate incidents, in their apartment in North Goa.

On August 19, actress Alexandra Djavi was found hanging in her rented apartment in Siolim village while Ekaterina Titova was found dead in her flat in the same village.

While the police initially said there was no evidence of foul play, Titova’s death was later attributed to murder after the post mortem report revealed she was smothered to death. Her friend, Denis Kruichkoy, was arrested in connection with the case.

The final cause of Djavi’s death is yet to be ascertained pending examination of the viscera.

Teen whose body was found on beach in Goa was brutally assaulted before death, says report

19-year-old Sanjay. (Photo | Express)

KOTTAYAM: Mystery surrounds the death of a teenager from Vaikom whose body was found on a beach in Goa. The postmortem examination has revealed multiple injuries, which suggest that Sanjay, son of Santhosh, from Kulasekharamangalam, was brutally assaulted.

Relatives are now demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death. The 19-year-old had travelled to Goa on December 29 to celebrate the New Year but was discovered lifeless on Vagator Beach in the early hours of Thursday.

The postmortem examination, conducted at Goa Medical College in Bambolim, highlighted the presence of multiple blunt force impacts on the front, back, and outer aspect of his chest, indicating a violent assault prior to his death.

However, the forensic department has refrained from providing a definitive cause of death, pending the results of the chemical analysis of the viscera, serological examination, and diatom study.

According to the report, the body was in a decomposed state. The family suspects murder. “Sanjay, who had attended a dance party, was mercilessly beaten to death and then thrown into the sea,” said Santhosh. Santhosh revealed that Sanjay and his friends had visited a temporary dance club.

“We have video footage of Sanjay at the party. From the footage, we can see someone pulling Sanjay away. Sanjay went missing after that,” Santhosh said.

He added that the details were shared with Anjuna police in Goa. The body was brought back home on Thursday night and cremated in the early hours of Friday.

Sanjay embarked on the trip with Krishnadev, 20, and Jayakrishnan, 20, who were both with his friends and neighbours.

He went missing on the night of December 31 while attending a dance party at Vagator. Krishnadev and Jayakrishnan informed Sanjay’s family about his disappearance.

With the help of the Malayalee Association of Goa, Krishnadev and Jayakrishan filed a complaint with the Goa police, while the family lodged a complaint with the Thalayolaparambu police. Following an extensive search, the body was discovered around 2 am on Thursday morning and Sanjay’s father identified it.

FAMILY SUSPECTS MURDER

Santhosh, the father of Sanjay, revealed that his son and his friends had visited a temporary dance club. “We have video footage of Sanjay at the party. From the footage, we can see someone pulling Sanjay away. Sanjay went missing after that,” Santhosh said. He added that the details were shared with Anjuna police in Goa.

Brit woman found dead at beach church in Goa had no external injuries except one bruise

Emma Leaning, 46, was reportedly staying at a rented flat in Agonda with friends when her body was found slumped inside church grounds in Goa, one of India's most popular tourist destination

The body of Emma Leaning was found at Agonda Beach in Goa, India

  • 13:24, 5 Jan 2024

The British woman found dead on a beach in Goa under mysterious circumstances has now been identified.

The body of Emma Leaning, 46, was found lying inside a church compound adjacent to Agonda Beach in southern Goa, one of India's most popular tourist destination. She was found slumped on the ground, but police said there were no external signs of injury found on her body apart from a single wound or bruise on her leg. Witnesses said her clothes were found on site, but her slippers were neatly placed beside the wall.

According to Goa's The Herald, local police are struggling to establish a clear timeline and have been unable to recover any CCTV footage from nearby beach shacks or resorts. Cops said the case has been registered, with her body being sent for a post-mortem at a hospital in the town after it was approved by the British embassy. The mortician found that she died as a result of damage to her brain and cervical spine.

Locals discovered the body as they wandered along the beach, which is north of Canacona, which is lined with stunning glowing sand beaches and a hotspot for watersports. Local media outlets have speculated that Emma may have been trying to climb over a wall when she fell. The post mortem showed a number of internal injuries.

Police inspector Chandrakant Gawa said: "She was found with no injuries, her clothes and possessions including mobile phone and identity documents were intact. We do not suspect foul play. We can comment on the cause of death only after the postmortem."

The Hindustan Times reports Emma had travelled to Goa on a number of different occasions and was considered a frequent visitor. She was travelling with friends at the time, and they have been notified of her death. The Herald added further detail about Emma's links to the area, saying she had visited frequently over the past 13 years, staying at the same rented flat for the past three tourist seasons.

"Her friends and family have been informed of the incident. The consulate and embassy too have been kept in the loop," said South Goa superintendent of police Abhishek Dhania. "The body will be handed over to the relatives after the completion of formalities."

At the time of its discovery, the body was "under decomposition stage", the police said, adding that her friends "do not suspect any foul play." Emma is understood to have been staying in rented accommodation in Agonda at the time of her death.

The Mirror has contacted the Foreign Office and the authorities in Canacona for comment.

The Foreign Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Goa and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Delhi tourist stabbed to death at Goa beach for resisting robbery

Panaji: A 20-year-old visitor from Delhi was killed allegedly by three persons at the Baga beach in Goa when he resisted their robbery attempt, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Sunday night and the three accused were arrested on Tuesday, they said.

The victim, identified as Harish Tanwar from Delhi, was sitting at a secluded place at the Baga beach in North Goa district when the three accused tried to rob his bag, an official from Calangute police station said.

"When he resisted, one of the accused stabbed him. The victim died on the spot during the scuffle," he said.

The body was found at the Baga beach on Monday morning.

The police arrested the three accused - Sahil Kumar, Noor Khan and Sunil Vishwakarma - on Tuesday, he said, adding that they have confessed to the crime.

Noor, a native of Uttar Pradesh, resided in Goa's Parra area and worked as a tailor in Calangute village.

Kumar, a native of Uttarakhand, and Vishwakarma, hailing from Nepal, were involved in petty thefts in the past, the official said.

The three persons were on Tuesday evening produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class at Mapusa which remanded them in four-day judicial custody, he said.

Goa murder: 245 tourists died in four local districts in past 12 years

Relatives of foreigners whose deaths were classified as natural or accidental say some cases could be the result of foul play

An Irish-British dual national whom police believe was murdered in Goa was one of more than 245 foreigners to die in four districts of the Indian state in the past 12 years, according to police records obtained by the Guardian.

A postmortem on the body of Danielle McLaughlin has revealed the 28-year-old had been sexually assaulted and strangled in the hours after leaving a party on Monday at Palolem beach, a popular spot in the south of the state.

Police say they have arrested and will charge a local man they have identified as Vikat Bhagat with her rape and murder. Bhagat, described as a local gang member, was seen with McLaughlin on CCTV footage the day before her death.

Records from the Goa police, obtained under India’s freedom of information laws, show that six other foreigners’ deaths were classified as murders in the Anjuna, Pernem, Mapusa and Canacona districts in the decade leading to August 2015.

Another 157 foreigner deaths were classified as natural or accidental, but a group of relatives of some of the tourists who died in the western Indian state say authorities have overlooked crucial clues in some cases that could point to foul play.

The statistics reveal a darker picture of the coastal paradise that more than 5 million tourists visited in 2016. There were 20 suicides in Pernem district. About 23 people drowned, while the cause of death for another 39 people is listed as “not known or pending”. Foreign men aged between 30 and 49 are most at risk of dying in the districts, the records show.

The families of at least six foreigners who died while holidaying in Goa have told the Guardian they question initial rulings that the deaths of their loved ones were natural or accidental.

One of those listed as a natural death is 22-year-old Felix Dahl, a Finnish national who was found dead in Patnem, Canacona, in January 2015. Dahl was found with skull wounds – a postmortem carried out in Goa attributed his death to an accidental fall. However, a second autopsy conducted in Finland showed “that was impossible”, his mother Manni Pirhonen said. “The doctors say his damages resulted from high impact force of some sort and falling is excluded,” she said.

A man known to have been in contact with her son is an associate of Bhagat, the man arrested in the McLaughlin case, and the pair were among a group arrested in the past for a series of burglaries in Canacona.

Sixteen days after Dahl’s death, the body of James Durkin also washed up on a beach in Canacona after he went missing for more than a month. The body of the 34-year-old from south London was badly decomposed and showed possible signs of mutilation.

His death is listed in the records as a drowning but a coroner in the UK reached an open conclusion. “Has he come to some sort of harm at the hands of a third party or has there been an accident? I just don’t know,” she said, according to news reports .

Sara Neighbour’s brother Martin was found dead on Arambol beach in February 2008 in a case that was also classified as a drowning. But Neighbour told an inquest in London her brother “looked like he had been beaten up”.

One of those listed as murdered was 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling from Devon, whose bruised body was found in the shallows of Anjuna beach in February 2008. The documents list her cause of death as “drowning in the beach sand water (murder)”. Keeling’s death was initially ruled an accidental drowning, before pressure from her mother forced a second autopsy, which revealed evidence of drugs in her system, more than 50 cuts and bruises and signs of sexual assault.

The death of Denyse Sweeney was initially ruled by police as a drug overdose, but an inquest found no illegal substances in her body and the initial investigation reportedly overlooked evidence of injuries on her body. The case has since been listed as a murder.

Speaking on behalf of the families, Pirhonen said they felt it was unlikely that so many young people were dying natural deaths in the state. “[We] suspect that murders of tourists are actually very common in Goa,” she said. “Nothing is properly investigated except maybe now [with the McLaughlin case]. This was too obviously a murder, so they could not say she fell or drowned. Anybody who’s found in the water, they say has drowned.”

Goa police have been contacted for comment.
