This small safe with a combination lock can hold toys up to nine inches and even comes with a fireproof bag for your most precious items. Cutest Case: Dame Stash

Dame Stash lavender tie dye storage bag on light gray background

Why it's worth it: Despite the dainty appearance of the Dame Stash, it holds more than you'd expect and comes equipped with pockets, elastic loops, and a stain-resistant liner to maintain order and cleanliness. The unique tie-dye pattern is easy to spot in any mess and the wrist strap allows you to quickly grab it and go…all the way to your hookup's house.

It also has other useful features like an open base for discreet charging and internal dividers to hold wand attachments, chargers, and lube.

Editor's tip: Per reviewers, this bag is spacious. One customer shared that they managed to fit “a full-size Lovehoney wand, a few plugs, an eight-inch dildo, a bullet vibrator, a mini paddle, and a small bottle or lube, still with room to spare.”

Type: zippered storage case | Material: faux leather | Lock: no | Dimensions: 14 x 5.5 x 3.5 inches

Locking Storage Box Travel Bag

Why it's worth it: This large storage case is perfect for organizing your sex toys and taking them on the go. It has multiple mesh pockets, elastic straps, a clear pocket on the inside lid, a detachable strap, and a combination lock. It's ideal if you have a lot of BDSM gear you want to take on a weekend getaway or to your hookup's house. Luckily, this looks like a traditional travel bag so the contents inside won't be obvious at all.

Editor's tip: You can rearrange the dividers inside to accommodate items of different sizes.

Type: travel storage box | Material: mesh, nylon | Lock: yes | Dimensions: 7.1 x 11.4 x 8.6 inches

Best Storage for BDSM Gear: Gorilla Grip Mesh Over-the-Door Organizer

Gorilla Grip Mesh Over-the-Door Organizer beige over-the-door organizer with rows of pockets on light gray background

Gorilla Grip

Mesh Over-the-Door Organizer

Why it's worth it: Okay, it's not the most subtle storage solution. But if you've got a ton of sex toys and accessories to organize—like floggers, restraints, vibrators, butt plugs, and other items—this over-the-door storage with 24 compartments is a genius way to keep it all organized. The pockets are made of breathable mesh so everything stays dry and it comes with hooks that make it easy to hang over any door.

Editor's tip: It comes in eight colors, so you can find one that matches your room's decor.

Type: over-the-door organizer | Material: linen, mesh | Lock: no | Dimensions: 64 x 19 inches

Most Giftable: Shots Toys Pussy Pillow Plushie

Shots Toys Pussy Pillow Plushie with Storage Pouch pink pillow with a cartoon vagina on it on light gray background

Pussy Pillow Plushie with Storage Pouch

Why it's worth it: This cheeky Pussy Pillow Plushie doubles as sex toy storage. While the front side of the pillow has a vagina-inspired design, the back side has a zippered pouch that's perfect for keeping your favorite vibrator or dildo close at hand. It also has just enough space for a bottle of lube or additional sex toy.

Editor's tip: This would be a fun erotic gift for your bestie's bachelorette, especially if you slide a couples' vibrator in the pocket first.

Type: pillow | Material: cotton, plush | Lock: no | Dimensions: 15.75 x 11.02 inches

When you're looking for someplace to store your sex toys, consider factors like the number of toys you need to store, how often you travel with them, and how discreet you want to be. It's also worth considering whether you prefer a storage solution with a lock.

Yes, you could keep your toys floating around in the bedside drawer or shoved under the mattress. However, a specific place to store them will protect them from dirt, dust, and other debris. Some storage options also provide extra security that ensures no one who shouldn't see your sex toys—like kids, roommates, or house cleaners—doesn't stumble upon them. Other storage cases also have built-in sanitizing features that ensure your toys are squeaky-clean next time you want to get down.

Now you've got your storage sorted, fill it up with buzzy gadgets to ensure a good time:

Pictured is Anthony Demonte, 50.

COOK COUNTY, Ill. - A Barrington man was sentenced to eight years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to a charge of solicitation of child pornography.

Anthony Demonte, 50, was arrested in June 2023 after investigators found he downloaded and shared sexually explicit content of children under the age of 13 on social media, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

Law enforcement obtained search warrants for one of Demonte's social media accounts that reportedly contained child pornography.

Investigators also completed a forensic analysis on his cellphone, where they found more pornographic videos of underage boys and girls.

Demonte will serve his eight-year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections, the sheriff's office said.

He will also be required to serve three years of mandatory supervised release and must also register as a sex offender for life, according to the sheriff's office.

Where To Do Fall Stuff Within 90 Minutes Of Chicago

I t’s time to succumb to the power of autumn. What other season enables us to buy decorative gourds? When else are Chicagoans presented the opportunity to sit in a wagon full of hay? So whether you want to drink cider or use the word “spooky” unironically, here are nine farms, cideries, and haunted houses within 90 minutes of Chicago.

All Seasons Orchard

Woodstock, IL - 75 minutes from The Loop

We’re leading with a one-stop-fall-fun shop (wow, that’s catchy). All Seasons is a farm in Woodstock, Illinois, that’s open August 31 through November 2. And it has everything—apple picking, pumpkin picking, petting zoo, apple cider donuts, and a corn maze that we have on good authority isn’t haunted by an evil scarecrow. For more info, visit their website .

County Line Orchard

Hobart, IN - 50 minutes from The Loop

County Line is in Hobart Indiana, but it’s only an hour away (even less when traffic isn’t bad, which is never). Along with apple and pumpkin picking, this orchard also has Bee Yurts—and for $2 you can tour the hives that pollinate the apple trees, and thank them for their service. You can also listen to live music while sitting on hay bales, ride a tractor out to the orchard, and get fresh-baked bread and cider donuts.

Goebbert's Farm

Barrington, IL - 50 minutes from The Loop

We’re big fans of the apple cider donuts at Goebert’s in Barrington. And while they’re delicious enough to drive an hour for, that’s not the only reason to spend your Saturday here. This place also has a corn maze, pig races (they compete to win a donut) and a haunted house that’s supposedly designed for children, but we’re not taking any chances. Oh, and the bakery also has pumpkin cookies and all sorts of pies. Check out their site for a full list of activities.

Kuipers Family Farm

Maple Park, IL - 70 minutes from The Loop

Kuipers in Maple Park has opened Pumpkin Farm for the season. So from now through November 3rd, you can do things like pick pumpkins (naturally), along with tons of other activities like wandering around a corn maze, riding a little tractor train, petting animals, buying fall decorations at their gift shop, and hanging out in something they call the “Back 40 Playground.” Tickets start at $15.99, and you can buy them here .

Keller's Farmstand

Oswego, IL - 60 minutes from The Loop

Keller’s Farmstand in Oswego has apple picking and pumpkin picking, plus a little shop where you can purchase various other winter squash along with fresh fudge, kettle corn, and apple cider donuts. They also have themed corn mazes, animal barn, and hayrides. A trip here puts you one gourd away from a pile of dried leaves becoming your preferred sleep system. See their website for more info .

Apple Holler Family Fun

Sturtevant, WI - 70 minutes from The Loop

Will you go all the way to Wisconsin for autumnal fun? Sure, why not—Apple Holler is only a little over an hour away. This orchard plays all the hits—apple picking, cute goats you can feed, and the ubiquitous corn maze. They also have The Red Barn Cafe, where you can grab things like apple dumplings, cider donuts, and brats. Plus, you can reserve a private horse-drawn carriage ride along the farm, complete with a campfire and fixings for s’mores and either hot chocolate or hot apple cider. And according to our research, that’s the most wholesome date you are ever going to go on. Visit their site to make reservations .

Honey Hill Orchard

Waterman, IL - 90 minutes from The Loop

At 90 minutes west of Chicago, this orchard in Waterman is further away than the other spots on this list. But go ahead and bond with your significant other on a trip through the countryside—even one that’s mainly interstate and toll roads. Honey Hill has apple picking, treats like donuts, fresh-baked pies, cider, caramel apples, and honey. There’s a charming 1880s barn where you can shop for gifts, and they offer wagon rides out to the pumpkin patch and orchard. Check their harvest schedule to see what apple varieties are available.

CHICAGOLAND

13th floor haunted house.

A couple of haunted houses are opening in Chicagoland soon. The first one is the 13th Floor Chicago, which has a new location this year in Schiller Park. It will start on September 13th, and will also feature a carnival midway, food, and drinks. They'll also ask you to sign a waiver, and recommend that you don't bring anyone under 12. Tickets and more information are available on their website .

Joliet Haunted Prison

The second haunted house to know about is the Old Joliet Haunted Prison, which is opening on September 13th for Halloween season. And yes, it is literally a haunted house in an abandoned prison in Joliet. You can buy tickets and get more info here .

Virtuoso Travel Week reveal: Current hot travel spots are cool weather destinations

About 4,700 travel industry attendees from over 90 countries gathered for Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas summer temperatures soared - like an Olympic pole-vaulter - over the 100-degree mark during 2024 Virtuoso Travel Week. The luxury travel network’s unflappable executive Misty Belles revealed data on travel to the Paris Games and why vacation destinations in chillier climes are the new “hot spots.”

“Heat waves in Western Europe sent travelers looking for ‘cool-cations’ in more mild-weather destinations such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Canada and Iceland,” said Belles, Virtuoso Travel’s vice-president of global public relations.

The collective “planet” journeyed to Travel Week, though, creating, in the interconnected, air-conditioned Aria, Bellagio and Vdara Hotels, a village of 4,700 Virtuoso travel advisors, hoteliers, cruise directors, CEO’s and executives, and tourism board officials from 97 counties comparing notes and booking trips. Discerning travelers turn to the collective negotiating power of Virtuoso’s collaborative travel network to enhance luxury planning and to book custom, exclusive itineraries.

“Virtuoso is the network for you if travel is important to you and you want to customize your trip with someone who specializes in you. Virtuoso’s advisors provide advice, access, advocacy, accountability, value, time savings and trust,” Belles explained.

Belles, a regular on NBC’s “Today Show,” pointed out the attitudes of travelers have evolved.

“Travel for ‘self-care’ evolved to booking trips out of ‘self-preservation.’ It is more urgent. There is so much flying at us so quickly there days, so take time to make sure you are worrying about yourself, too. It may be a ‘silver bullet wellness’ concept such as specialized sleep programs at a spa resort. How do I improve my rest? How do I meditate? Or change my diet?”

Belles is glad the post-pandemic phrase “revenge travel” has evolved to the more joyful “revelry travel.”

“Fun, joy, awe, and wonder are how you want to feel when you travel. And people who formerly embraced travelling ‘at any cost’ now travel ‘at all costs.’ The ‘bucket list’ has become the ‘F-it List,’” said Belles of the duplicitous rhyming phrases. “It’s the old ‘just do it’ mentality. How do you want to live and celebrate your life and feel alive? Is it bungy jumping in New Zealand? Is it attending a Formula One race? Is it flying to a Taylor Swift concert or the Olympics? It's passion-led travel: living in the moment and celebrating your life.”

Virtuoso survey data revealed “curiosity and exploration” as an emotional driver of how travelers want to feel, which determines what they want to do. When a traveler shares how they want to feel, a Virtuoso advisor designs an experience.

Gen Z and millennials are outpacing the older generation and significantly increasing travel, according to Virtuoso’s data. “They are twice as likely to seek an adrenaline rush and are prioritizing ultra-luxe hotels, business class seats and luxury cruising,” Belles said.

Allora…andiamo! What are the largest growth areas for travel this fall? The decidedly cooler Canada is hot: Up 168%, with Japan not far behind. Visits to St. Barths are up 155%. Globally, the top countries for fall travel are the USA, Italy, France, Mexico and the United Kingdom – a ranking matched almost exactly by U.S. travelers. Greater China is also getting a lot of visitors this fall.

If you are looking for (relative) value, Virtuoso reports the prices in Toarmina, Sicily (home of “The Godfather” and HBO’s “White Lotus,” are down 22%. Napa, California is uncorking wine country visits at 19% less; and Amsterdam’s rates are down 11%. The price of visiting the Aloha State is down 8%.

Costs have risen for holiday travel to the Caribbean; Mexico and Morocco.

Slovenia, Portugal and Croatia, Montenegro and Guatemala are alternate, less crowded destinations.

In between Virtuoso’s rousing receptions, posh presentations, many meetings and international networking, some odds-and-ends statistics spilled out, such as the stat that a U.S. election-year doesn’t decrease travel, but chops growth by 10%. And while a woman is running for president, plenty of “wander women” are on the move, too: 71% of solo travelers are women, with 47% of them divorced or separated. Nothing is stopping them, or Virtuoso travelers, from their “F-it List!’

Health | ‘Wear your bug spray,’ health officials warn. Five different mosquito-borne diseases have infected Floridians

The list includes west nile, dengue, chikungunya, malaria and the newest: oropouche.

Experts say the hot, humid, rainy weather and an uptick in summer travel have put health officials on the offensive as they try to control the spread of mosquito-borne diseases being reported among Florida residents.

Already this year, at least seven people in Florida have been bitten by a mosquito carrying West Nile virus.  In addition, the newest mosquito-borne disease to reach Florida is Oropouche , a virus that has proved deadly in South America. It arrived in Florida via travelers to Cuba. So far, 30 travel-associated Oropouche fever cases have been reported in Florida, including 10 in the last week.

Other mosquito-borne diseases reported in Florida in 2024 are dengue, Chikungunya fever, and malaria. Symptoms range from fever and chills to brain inflammation.

“We have been treating mosquitoes aggressively, working 24/7 over the last few weeks,” said Anh Ton, the director of Broward County’s mosquito control.

Workers regularly check traps set throughout the county for adult mosquitoes and examine water sources for signs of larvae to eliminate mosquitoes before they mature. Broward is now using a drone to spray for mosquitoes in hard-to-reach places.

Ton urges anyone outside at dawn or dusk to wear insect repellant with DEET, remove objects with standing water from their yard, and report high mosquito levels in a specific area by calling 311 on a mobile device or 954-765-4062 from a landline. Also, use fans outdoors on high settings: Mosquitos are weak flyers and have trouble navigating in the wind.

“Several things are happening at the same time that are causing what we are seeing in Florida,” said Aarti Raja, a professor of biology at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. “There are changes in weather patterns, increases in deforestation, a warming in regions around the world leading to more mosquitoes, and an increase in travel after the pandemic, including to areas where these diseases are endemic.”

Raja said these mosquito-borne diseases cannot be transmitted through person-to-person contact, only through a bite. If someone is bitten abroad, and a Florida mosquito bites that person, the disease can spread locally.

Raja said it also is possible that disease-carrying mosquitos are coming into Florida through freight from other countries.

These are the mosquito-borne viruses seen in Florida this year and how to protect yourself from them:

Already this year, at least seven people in Florida have been bitten by a mosquito carrying the same disease as the one that recently sent Dr. Anthony Fauci to the hospital for nearly a week. Fauci is the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and served as a lead member of the White House COVID-19 Response Team. According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida’s seven cases are counted among the 289 human cases of West Nile reported in 33 states this year. The CDC reported that 142 patients had brain inflammation from the virus.

West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne illness in the country and tends to peak in August and September. Florida is a hotbed for the mosquitos that carry West Nile. There is no specific treatment or vaccine for West Nile. Use common repellents such as DEET and picaridin to protect yourself from these mosquitoes.

You will need to watch for West Nile symptoms if a mosquito has bitten you. These can appear three to 14 days later and include fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, inflammation, and hives.

Just a few years ago, a Fort Lauderdale resident had a severe reaction to a mosquito-borne disease in which his central nervous system caused paralysis, taking away his ability to walk.

At least 30 travelers to Cuba have returned to Florida with Oropouche, 10 of them in the last week. Oropouche, also known as “sloth fever,” is spread to people by small flies known as midges and some mosquito species. If an infected person who traveled gets bitten again in Florida, the virus can spread locally.

Health officials and mosquito control staff are on high alert in South Florida, where the species that carries Oropouche, Culex quinquefasciatus, is prevalent. A new Florida Department of Health report as of Aug. 24 shows five cases reported in each of Broward, Duval and Hillsborough counties, 14 in Miami-Dade, and two in each of Orange, Palm Beach, Pasco, Polk, Lee and Sarasota counties. All were people who had traveled to Cuba.

“We are working with other state agencies and the health department to make sure we know when and where there’s a travel-related case, and treat around their residence and business to make sure the person bitten doesn’t spread it,” said Ton at Broward County Mosquito Control.

Not everyone who gets bitten will show symptoms. About 60% of people infected with the Oropouche virus become symptomatic, with a high fever, headache, muscle aches, stiff joints, nausea, vomiting, chills, or sensitivity to light. Severe cases can result in meningitis. Two deaths in previously healthy young persons with Oropouche virus infection were recently reported in Brazil.

Federal health officials urge anyone traveling to Latin America or Cuba to protect themselves by wearing insect repellent.

Chikungunya Fever

Five Floridians who traveled to Brazil this year have returned with Chikungunya Fever. Symptoms include the sudden onset of a high fever, severe joint pain in the hands and feet, joint swelling and muscle pain.

So far, all the cases are travel-related. Symptoms tend to appear about four to eight days after an infected mosquito bite. Most people recover fully.

The dengue virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, has been surging  worldwide , and health officials want doctors to be on alert. In the last six months, countries in the Americas have already broken calendar-year records for dengue cases. The mosquito-borne disease has made its way to Florida, with 417 travel-associated cases reported this year and 39 just in the last week. The majority of those cases are in people who had traveled to Brazil.

Six cases of infected Floridians met the criteria for severe dengue shock syndrome or dengue hemorrhagic fever. People at greater risk for severe dengue include people with a previous dengue infection, pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and those with co-morbidities. However, health officials note that severe illness can also occur in people without any of these risk factors.

Particularly troubling is that dengue has been reported in Floridians who haven’t traveled. This year,  25 cases of locally acquired dengue have been reported in six Florida counties (Hillsborough, Manatee, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Orange and Pasco). Some people don’t have any symptoms, while others get a high fever, severe headache, eye pain, muscle pain, nausea, or vomiting.

Experts advise using insect repellents containing 20% to 30% DEET or other ingredients to help keep away the mosquitos that carry dengue.  A dengue vaccine (Dengvaxia) is recommended only if you already have had dengue. It can reduce your risk of severe dengue if you get a different version of the virus in the future.

Malaria can be a life-threatening disease spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Thirty-eight cases of the virus have been reported in Florida this year. However, the Florida Department of Health records show that all were acquired outside the U.S. The state has been on high alert for malaria since 2023, when seven cases were reported by people in the northern part of Sarasota County after being bitten in Florida rather than while traveling abroad. All seven patients were concentrated within a 4-mile radius,

People who have malaria usually have a high fever and shaking chills. About 600,000 people a year, 95% of them children under age 5, get infected.

To prevent a malaria infection, experts recommend applying mosquito repellent with DEET (diethyltoluamide) to exposed skin, and treating clothing with an insect repellent called permethrin. If you travel to areas with high levels of malaria, it’s also recommended to wear long pants and long sleeves to cover your skin.

Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE)

This disease has not been reported in Florida, but it’s been in the news recently and is worth knowing about. The mosquito-borne virus has been reported this summer in the Northeast. On Tuesday, health authorities in New Hampshire reported a resident had died from eastern equine encephalitis virus. Health authorities cautioned anyone traveling to the Northeast and spending time outdoors to use bug repellent and cover up as much as possible.

The mosquito-borne virus is particularly concerning because about a third of people who develop encephalitis from the virus die from the infections, and survivors can suffer lifelong mental and physical disabilities. There is no vaccine or antiviral treatment available.

Breaking news, it’s cuffing season for horny tarantulas as thousands of spiders travel the us looking for love.

They’ll go anywhere for love.

Arachnophobes beware: thousands of horny tarantulas are emerging from their subterranean dwellings and scouring America’s southwest for a soulmate.

“This event does happen every year, usually around the same time,” Lauren Davidson, Associate Curator of Entomology at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, told BBC Science Focus of the frisky phenomenon.

The mass mating migration generally occurs from June-October (depending on the region), during which reproductively mature males — aged 8-10 years old — will seek mates across Colorado, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

A tarantula on the move.

What prompts this paramour pilgrimage?

“The females tend to stay in their burrows and emit pheromones to let males know where to find them,” Davidson explained.

Then, turned-on male tarantulas emerge from their silk-lined burrows hungry for love. Once they’ve tracked the perfume down to its source, the spider suitor will “knock at the door” by rhythmically tapping at the entrance.

If the courtship display is deemed acceptable, she could meet him.

Naturally, the idea of thousands of tarantulas — which are America’s largest spider — going on a love Odyssey might seem apocalyptic.

However, this sex pedition is actually rare to come across.

A tarantula in its burrow.

Male tarantulas are only alive for one mating season — they spend the rest of their lives underground — and only travel around half a mile from their burrows.

“It is very cyclical and region-dependent,” Davidson explained. “You really have to drive quite a way out of the city to see any of these males.”

“If people haven’t noticed these large numbers before, then they likely won’t notice them this year either,” she added.

Not to mention that tarantulas are also nocturnal, so the majority of this soulmate searching occurs at night.

If one does come across one of these amorous eight-leggers, they have nothing to fear as most are docile to the point that people handle them in the field sans incidents.

“They can bite, but their venom is comparable to a bee sting,” said Davidson.

However, the horny spiders have been known to cause traffic pileups while crossing the road.

In fact, these pilgrimages are much more perilous for the critters themselves, as along with getting run over, they can be devoured by the very female they are trying to court.

As October draws near, here in the UK we will soon be saying goodbye to the warm summer months and greeting the beginning of cloudy days, colder temperatures and higher levels of rainfall.

While October is rarely a good month for consistent sunny weather at home, there are several destinations abroad that continue to be graced with high temperatures and greater sunshine hours.

With kids back in school and many people avoiding holidays so close to the busy Christmas period, October is an excellent – and often affordable – month for an autumn getaway.

Southern European cities, including Seville and Valetta, stay pleasantly warm and have little rainfall during the month, while countries in the Southern Hemisphere are only just beginning to enter their own summer period.

With careful planning (namely, finding out climate information and avoiding the half-term holidays) you can find great value holidays to destinations across the world still soaking up the sun. We’ve rounded up a list of some of the best.

Seville, Spain

Plaza de Espana, part of Seville’s Maria Luisa park

  • Average temperature in October: 20C
  • Hours of sunshine per day: 7

October brings cooler temperatures to continental Europe’s warmest city, but daily highs still reach a pleasant 26C. This makes it a great month to explore the Andalusian capital as you can avoid the sweltering summer temperatures while sightseeing. For a real look into Moorish architecture and influence, start at the Casa de Pilatos before moving onto the Torre del Oro and then the Alcazar and its gardens. Beside this sits the city’s cathedral – a gothic marvel that is among the largest churches in the world – and the Giralda Tower.

For those who prefer to simply wander around, the banks of the Guadalquivir River make a great first stop on any long walk, with lovely places to eat and drink with a view. The María Luisa Park – and its centrepiece, the Plaza de Espana – are worthy of an extended visit, as are the numerous sites built for the Ibero-American Expo of 1929 (such as the Plaza de America).

Valetta, Malta

The harbour and St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral, along with the Carmelite Church at Valetta

  • Average temperature in October: 22C

October falls in Malta’s shoulder season, but temperatures in the capital remain high enough for an enjoyable, sun-kissed trip. With highs around 25C, October is a great time to explore the city while avoiding the scorching heat that you may experience in the summer months. The city itself is a Unesco World Heritage Site, with a variety of Baroque architecture and several walls and fortifications providing pleasant sightseeing opportunities as you explore. The main tourist sights include St John’s Co-Cathedral, Fort St Elmo (and the National War Museum) and the Grandmaster’s Palace.

Nevertheless, the city is far more than just old castles and religious sites. The waterfront features a collection of 18th-century warehouse buildings that now house various restaurants, cafes and shops along the promenade, while the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens are the city’s main green spaces. October also sees the city’s annual Notte Bianca festival, an arts celebration that takes place in various venues across the city, for example, at the City Gates (this year, it will be held on October 5).

Oahu, Hawaii, USA

Waikiki Beach is one of the most famous on the island

  • Average temperature in October: 27C
  • Hours of sunshine per day: 8

While all of the Hawaiian islands are undeniably idyllic, Oahu is the first pick due to the presence of an American metropolis, dozens of areas of amazing natural beauty and high temperatures reaching 29C. The city of Honolulu (the state capital) has all the classic character of any American city – with skyscrapers rising high and bars and restaurants serving standard American fare – but with the addition of a beachside location with a rainforest backdrop. This combination makes it a city unlike any other.

But despite this unique capital city being the ‘centre point’ of the island, it is far from the island’s biggest draw. Hundreds of incredible beaches line the coasts, with stunning white sands and crystal-clear waters found on beaches including Waikiki and Lanikai. Other natural areas worth exploring include the Waimea Canyon State Park, Kaena Point, or the various tours of the (privately-owned) Kualoa Ranch, famous as the filming location for the original Jurassic Park films.

Sardinia, Italy

An aerial view of the beautiful village of Bosa in Sardinia

  • Average temperature in October: 18C

This Mediterranean island has long been a top tourist destination, with its popularity among Italians adding to its reputation as a great pick for a holiday. While average temperatures only hover around 18C, average highs still climb to around 24C, making the island a great choice for that last bit of autumn sun. The waters will also be warm, meaning you can relax on the beach (or take part in any number of water sports) in areas like the Costa Smeralda or Cala Goloritzé.

While spending all your time kicking back at various beaches may be tempting, part of the lure of Sardinia is the opportunity for exploration . The island contains some of the most picturesque towns in Italy , with Alghero, Bosa, San Teodoro, and several others home to medieval buildings, castles and colourful riverside houses. If you’d rather stay in nature, there are also three National Parks and ten regional parks, with Asinara and Gennargentu among the most beautiful.

A rock arch near Cavo Greco, Ayia Napa

  • Average temperature in October: 23C
  • Hours of sunshine per day: 10

One of the warmest places in Europe during October, Cyprus offers temperatures in the high 20s. The island was granted independence in 1960 but has an extensive history involving ancient Greeks, Romans and many other historic civilisations. If you want to delve deeper into this history, some of its most famous landmarks include the Tombs of the Kings, Kolossi Castle and the ancient city of Kourion.

While many of its towns and cities, for example, Paphos and Larnaca, are also steeped in history, today the island enjoys a reputation as a tourist hotspot with pristine, sun-soaked beaches, a healthy Mediterranean lifestyle, beautiful natural surroundings (such as the Troodos Mountains) and dozens of villages (including Omodos and Lefkara) where visitors can experience well-preserved Cypriot traditions, cuisine and culture.

Algarve, Portugal

A beach and the surrounding architecture in Carvoeiro, Algarve, Portugal

Tucked away on the southernmost region of Portugal’s mainland, the Algarve has, on average, more sunshine per year than California does, and October does not miss out on these rays. Sun seekers can be found bathing in the Algarve’s hot weather along the region’s wealth of beaches, bays and coves.

The Algarve is famous for its long stretches of silky-soft sand that roll on for miles, but the area is also ideal for hiking around the diverse terrains while the temperatures are not so intensely hot. There are hundreds of trails to choose from, but one of the best known is the Via Algarviana, which is an old pilgrims’ route that connects the seaside of Cabo de São Vicente to mountainous terrain further inland. If taking a hike is not your bag, Faro’ s charming old town offers historical sites, such as the Chapel of Bones.

A beach on Le Morne, a peninsula in the southwest of Mauritius

  • Average temperature in October: 21C
  • Hours of sunshine per day: 9

As an Indian Ocean island nation, Mauritius is always going to have to compete with the Maldives and the Seychelles in the ‘idyllic beach holiday’ stakes. While the latter two arguably steal the limelight, this African country (found 1,130km east of Madagascar) still contains many of the attractions that make its ‘rivals’ so popular. The weather is still perfect in October – with average highs reaching around 27C – so it’s another great month for sampling the country’s scenic beaches, with soft white sand and crystalline turquoise water. Water-based activities are popular too, with opportunities for diving, swimming and snorkelling (along the numerous coral reefs), as well as kayaking and canoeing.

If too much beach begins to bore you, fear not: the island also contains several other natural areas, including Black River Gorges National Park (covered in tropical rainforest) and the Casela Nature Park. When you’re ready to return to civilisation, towns such as Flic-en-Flac and Grand Baie possess a pleasant mix of daytime relaxation and lively evenings.

Rhodes, Greece

Lindos, a village on the island of Rhodes

Another one of Greece’s seemingly endless list of important historical locations, Rhodes was once home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Nowadays, it is home to a medieval Old Town that is listed as a Unesco Heritage Site, with visitors flocking to the city (and the island in general) to see well-preserved fortifications, narrow limestone streets and historic sites, including the Street of Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master or the Lindos Acropolis.

Like almost every Greek island , Rhodes also possesses beautiful beaches and towns. Places like Lindos and Faliraki have gorgeous beaches that are perfect for a dip in the Aegean; with the backdrop of mountainside towns and quaint villages, they’re also a great place to visit a taverna or sample meze at the end of a long day of relaxation.

Cape Town, South Africa

A panoramic aerial view of the city

  • Average temperature in October: 24C

October marks the start of spring in Cape Town , with temperatures rising to pleasant levels and average highs staying at a manageable 24C. One of South Africa’s three capital cities (the legislative capital), Cape Town is a popular destination for Brits looking to travel further afield. Its various neighbourhoods are an eclectic blend of vibrant, lively districts with a mix of locals and tourists, calm beach areas, and artistic and creative hubs, with the V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay and Bo-Kaap among them.

Many people head to the city for its mix of urban living and natural sites. The Cape Floristic Region and West Coast National Park are nearby natural areas, while the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is one of the most popular sites in the city. Lion’s Head and Table Mountain offer hiking opportunities with amazing views of the city below, but the plethora of sandy beaches and hidden coves may be too tempting to divert from relaxation.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Botafogo Bay and Sugar Loaf Mountain

  • Average temperature in October: 26C
  • Hours of sunshine per day: 5

Brazil ’s temperatures tend to start to climb in October as the summer months only just begin in the Southern Hemisphere, making it a perfect time to travel that little further to visit the country’s second-largest city. While December to February are Rio de Janeiro’s peak summer months, October may be the better option for budget travellers who want to avoid the peak summer prices.

There is plenty to see in this city, such as journeying to the top of the mountain where Christ the Redeemer looks over at the streets below, partaking in Rio de Janeiro ’s nightlife in the Lapa neighbourhood, or visiting Santa Teresa for a more chilled night out on the town. However, for those seeking to soak up a bit of sun, the city is also home to some iconic stretches of beach . Visiting the two-and-a-half mile-long Copacabana beach may be on your bucket list, but a trip to the slightly less well-known but just as beautiful Ipanema beach is also a great choice.

7 Last-Minute Escapes for Labor Day Weekend

If you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places in North America that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

A cityscape of buildings and narrow streets that leads to a tall tower on a hill. Behind it is a large bay with small islands and boats.

By Shannon Sims

It might sound like an impossible request: a last-minute Labor Day getaway with gorgeous weather and minimal crowds that you can squeeze into a long weekend. There are good reasons many destinations across North America won’t fit the bill. Wildfires are burning in some parts of the West, tropical disturbances are brewing in the Caribbean, the East Coast’s coastal retreats are packed, and much of the South is sweaty and oh so steamy. But if you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

Here are seven inspirations in North America for a Labor Day getaway.

North Carolina

Hike to magical waterfalls

Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Asheville, N.C., and covering 500,000-plus acres, Pisgah National Forest is a magical place to be immersed in nature. American goldfinches and Carolina chickadees sing high above waterfalls framed by lush green trees, and babbling streams pour down moss-covered rocks hiding salamanders, newts and crayfish.

During the summer, these wooded areas are chock-full of children at summer camp, and the trails are often busy with hikers. But by Labor Day, most of the kids have returned home, while the weather is often perfect, with average temperatures in the seventies. You have your pick of activities — bird-watching, fly fishing, waterfall dousing and hiking.

Easy trails can be found at the North Carolina Arboretum , but for a shaded, moderate hike to a waterfall in which you can douse, check out Catawba Falls Trail . For another moderate hike (but no swimming), there is Linville Gorge and Falls , nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians. Advanced hikers can summit the 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell , the highest peak in the Eastern United States, in Mount Mitchell State Park, which is surrounded by Pisgah Forest.

Later, make your way back to Asheville , where a robust restaurant and brewery scene offers a perfect setting for sharing stories of your day. Local favorites include Cúrate for upscale tapas, Chai Pani for Indian food and Wicked Weed Brewing for hoppy deliciousness.

See San Francisco’s best-loved sights

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,” may be a clichéd phrase, but anyone who has visited this California city during the summer most likely experienced fog, dank air and brisk wind. But September and October are San Francisco’s warmest and brightest months of the year.

A long weekend is just enough for first timers to sample the city’s best-known attractions. Walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge . Board a cable car as it clangs up and down the city’s hills. Explore Alcatraz Island on a three-hour tour (book ahead). Take in the Fisherman’s Wharf area, which may be less chaotic with many children back in school. Watch a home game of the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park , right on the bay. Or check out the Presidio Tunnel Tops , a newly developed stretch of national park land featuring stunning panoramic views.

The city is a particularly special destination for those interested in L.G.B.T.Q. history. The GLBT Historical Society Museum , nicknamed the Queer Smithsonian, is a good place to start, as is a stroll through the Castro neighborhood or a stop at the Castro’s first gay bar, opened in 1963 as the Missouri Mule (now called Beaux).

Swim, fish, boat, then sip, at the Finger Lakes

One of the largest Finger Lakes in upstate New York, Keuka Lake stretches about 20 miles and draws visitors with clear-water swimming, paddling, kayaking and fishing. Labor Day marks the end of its high summer season.

Visitors can use picnic tables, playgrounds and swimming areas off sandy beaches at Keuka Lake State Park near Branchport or Red Jacket Park in the village of Penn Yan, on the lake’s northern end.

On its southern shores, the charming village of Hammondsport has cafes, shops and restaurants, many of which are clustered around the Pulteney Square Historic District .

Fishing is a big draw, with brown trout, yellow perch and more inhabiting the lake’s deep waters. You can buy your own fishing equipment at Jake’s Boat Livery , or get the professionals to do it by chartering a fishing expedition through Summit to Stream Adventures .

Don’t forget the wine: 20 vineyards are scattered around the lakeshore, with six part of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail . You can visit most wineries on your own or with a tour.

Keuka Lake is a one- to two-hour drive from airports in Rochester, Ithaca, Syracuse or Buffalo. The lake is about a five-hour drive from New York City.

Soak your stress away in alpine splendor

During Labor Day weekend, the I-70 corridor that connects Denver to the ski towns to the west, like Winter Park, Keystone and Breckenridge, can be bumper to bumper, especially getting back on Monday.

But nestled in the San Juan Mountains, about an hour’s drive from Telluride, is Ouray, an often overlooked gem for outdoor fun. Sure, there’s great hiking and canyoning, but there aren’t many towns where you can stroll down Main Street and stop into a boutique for shopping, a cafe for coffee and a hot springs for soaking. Ouray Hot Springs Pool is sulfur-free — in other words, no rotten-egg stink — and offers not just one pool but many: The family-friendly pools feature water slides, a volleyball net and a rolling log, while the adults-only soaking section is kept between 102 and 106 degrees.

Montrose Regional Airport , about an hour’s drive from Ouray, has direct flights to Chicago, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver.

Sample delicious urban delights

You won’t scratch the surface of what Mexico City offers in a long weekend, so consider tossing away those checklists and instead soak up the atmosphere in one or two neighborhoods.

Start by signing up for the city’s bike share app, Ecobici , for an easy way to get around town. The Roma neighborhood, a favorite among travelers, has shaded, walkable streets; inviting plazas; and some of the city’s best restaurants. For a neighborhood with a tad fewer tourists, try La Condesa , a short bike ride from Roma and between the two lovely green spaces called Bosque de Chapultepec and Parque México . Shopaholics should visit Polanco , where the commercial thoroughfare Presidente Masaryk Avenue offers luxury stores.

Whichever neighborhood you pick to explore, you’ll be delighted by the quality and flavors of food offered at the city’s restaurants, food carts and 11,000-plus taco shops. Even if a corner spot looks shabby, it might be producing food that could rank among the best bites you’ve ever had. Look no further than Taquería El Califa de León, an unassuming taco stand that won a Michelin star this year , as an example of the culinary magic that lies around any given corner.

Nova Scotia

Time-travel in a 1700s fishing village

About 62 miles southwest of downtown Halifax along Nova Scotia’s South Shore, breezy Lunenburg is a fishing village with charm — and fresh seafood — to spare.

Old Town Lunenburg is considered by UNESCO as the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Its colorful homes face tall ships moored in the harbor, transporting visitors back to the 1700s. Stroll around the area on your own, popping into local shops and restaurants, or sign up for a walking tour .

At the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic , part of the Nova Scotia Museum , you can experience what life was like in a fishing village throughout the centuries, from early Mi’kmaq communities to the arrival of Black Loyalists in 1783 to today. The museum is housed in an old fish processing plant, and the Old Fish Factory Restaurant now serves Nova Scotia lobster rolls on a wharf-side patio.

Fresh lobster is available year-round in Nova Scotia, so check out some stops on the Nova Scotia Lobster Trail . But don’t forget much of the Atlantic’s bounty: mussels, scallops, halibut, Arctic char, cod — even a seaweed called dulse — can be found on local menus.

Roam and ride in the sand dunes

The Great Lakes were made for summer, but the challenge is finding a spot that isn’t too crowded. Silver Lake Sand Dunes is a destination even many Michiganders don’t know about.

Located an hour-and-a-half drive from Grand Rapids on Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, the dunes comprise 2,000 acres and are part of Silver Lake State Park. Even though they are situated in the heart of the United States, the dunes will make you feel as if you’re roaming the sands of Arabia.

Activities at the park include swimming, canoeing and horseback riding along the beach, or hiking through the surrounding evergreen forests.

But a classic way to explore the dunes is through Mac Wood’s Dune Rides , a local company that for nearly a century has been taking visitors in open-top trucks for thrilling and informative rides through the sand.

While in the area, be sure to visit the Little Sable Point Lighthouse , an 1874 tower that was made more accessible to the public in 2010. Climb the tower and take in the lake, forests and dunes below.

An earlier version of this story included a photo caption that misstated the location of the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. It is in Centro district, not Polanco. It also misstated the location of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. The dunes are on Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, not western.

Microfiber sheets have gained popularity for being super smooth and inexpensive. They are synthetic and use ultra-thin strands of polyester (hence the “ micro fiber” name). While some shoppers may be skeptical because they're made with polyester instead of natural fibers like cotton or linen , microfiber is a great option for those who super-soft sheets over crisp (or anyone looking to spend less on their bedding).

Here at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we test sheets of all kinds to find the best sets for every preference, from cooling sheets for hot sleepers to warm and cozy flannel sheets and everything in between. In recent years, we've tested well over 200 sheet sets. According to our extensive testing, these are the best microfiber sheets you can buy.

This sheet set is a popular pick on Amazon, with over 248,000 5-star reviews. Our panel gave it some of the highest softness ratings compared to the hundreds of other sheets we've reviewed, and our testers described it as “feeling like butter.”

The fabric also stood up to our shrinkage and pilling tests. Take note though, the synthetic material might not be as breathable as natural cotton, and those who prefer a crisp sheet might find the fabric too soft, but that's on par for all microfiber sheets.

This Amazon Basics set is an incredible value at just over $20. In our Textiles Lab tests, the material scored high in durability for pilling, shrinkage and fabric strength. Our consumer panel also gave it high marks for softness, though a few testers thought the material felt thin and flimsy, especially compared to other fabrics.

These also come in a wide variety of colors and prints, so you’ll be sure to find something you love. Plus, it's wildly loved by Amazon shoppers with over 405,000 reviews and an average 4.5-star rating.

T esters gave these sheets perfect scores for softness and comfort in our at-home sleep tests. Our panel also unanimously said they stayed at a comfortable body temperature while sleeping on these sheets, so there’s no need to worry about overheating.

The fabric excelled in our shrinkage and strength tests, but because it has a slightly fuzzy surface (which makes it feel extremely soft), the tradeoff is it showed more pilling than others we tested.

Comphy Sheet Set

Sheet Set

If you’re willing to spend more on microfiber sheets, testers said these were ultra-soft. One commented, "These feel like quality fabric," making it stand out from other microfiber sheets that can feel thin or flimsy compared to cotton. Based on this tester feedback, we think these sheets are the perfect compromise between the softness of microfiber and the substantial feel of cotton sheets. In Lab testing, they performed on par with other microfiber sheets for standing up to wrinkling, shrinking and pilling.

What exactly are microfiber sheets?

best carpet stain removers how to get out old stains

Microfiber sheets are made with extremely fine (or "micro") strands of polyester, making them different from your typical polyester fabric. These sheets are ideal for someone who loves a silky soft sheet rather than a crisp sheet. The thin synthetic fibers give microfiber sheets their buttery smooth feel, and polyester is often durable, so you can expect them to last.

Microfiber sheets also tend to have excellent drape, as opposed to cotton which tends to be more structured. For some, this soft and drapey quality can make the sheets feel too thin or flimsy. Because they are made with polyester they also tend to be less expensive, making them a great value for those that want a soft yet durable sheet.

Microfiber vs. cotton sheets

best carpet stain removers how to get out old stains

The key difference between microfiber and cotton sheets is the fiber they're made with. As described above, microfiber sheets are made from thin strands of polyester, whereas cotton is a naturally-grown fiber. 100% cotton sheets are most popular, though sometimes cotton is blended with other fibers like polyester or viscose to make the sheet's fabric.

Microfiber sheets are usually smoother than their cotton counterparts and they also tend to be less expensive. Microfiber sheets in our tests were typically more resistant to wrinkles, shrinkage and pilling. Cotton sheets, on the other hand, feel more luxurious and substantial than microfiber. They’re ideal for people who prefer a natural, crisp feel or for those who are looking for organic sheets since microfiber is not considered a sustainable fabric.

What are the pros and cons of microfiber sheets?

best carpet stain removers how to get out old stains

Our tests have shown that microfiber sheets do live up to their hype for being soft and affordable. That being said, they're not for everyone. Here's what to consider when deciding if they're right for you:

  • Inexpensive: Microfiber sheets are ideal for people on a budget because you can easily find options in the $20-$30 price range.
  • Soft : You have to feel them to truly understand just how soft they feel, but most of our testers describe them as "buttery soft."
  • Durable and shrink resistant: Synthetic fibers like polyester typically hold up to laundering and wear and tear better than natural fibers like cotton.
  • Smoother appearance : Another perk of using a synthetic is that it doesn't crease or wrinkle as most cotton sheets.
  • Thinner : For some that are used to thick cotton fabrics, microfiber sheets may feel flimsy.
  • Too smooth: If you prefer a crisp feel or just don't like to sleep on an ultra-soft surface, these likely won't be the right sheets for you.
  • Less breathable: Because the fibers are packed in, they aren't as airy as some cotton weaves.
  • Not sustainable: Polyester is made from petroleum, and microfibers have been linked to ocean pollution .

How we test sheets

best carpet stain removers how to get out old stains

When we test microfiber sheets, they go through rigorous Lab and consumer testing to evaluate strength, pilling, shrinkage, wrinkle-resistance, softness and more.

To test the sheet's strength, we use a specialized machine (called an Instron), which pulls fabric swatches until they break and tells us the strength of each sheet. We also use an abrasion machine that rubs two fabrics swatches together to mimic tossing and turning on the sheets, as well as regular wear and tear. We reference textile industry standards to visibly score the signs of pilling.

Each sheet is repeatedly washed and dried according to its care label and gets scored multiple times on both shrinkage and how it looks after being laundered. Immediately after the sheet is dried, it’s taken to our standardized lighting room and visually measured for wrinkles and creases following industry standards.

Not only do our sheets go through many lab tests, but we also use a consumer panel to help us assess which sheets are the softest and most comfy on the market. After the sheets are laundered to remove any leftover finishes from production, dozens of consumer testers feel each fabric in a blind comparison test and score each one. Lastly, all the scores are tabulated to give a final overall score.

Do microfiber sheets sleep hot?

best carpet stain removers how to get out old stains

Not necessarily. If you’re already a hot sleeper or sweat at night then you may benefit more from cooling sheets that are specifically designed to wick moisture away and prevent overheating. However, most people who slept on microfiber sheets in our tests didn’t report feeling hot; in fact, many said they remained at a comfortable body temperature throughout the night. If you’re concerned about sleeping on polyester because of overheating, consider this: Most workout clothing you wear while exercising is made of polyester.

What's a good thread count for microfiber sheets?

best carpet stain removers how to get out old stains

Believe it or not, thread count does not matter for microfiber sheets. You may see thread counts over 1,500 labeled on microfiber sheets, but that doesn't mean they're higher quality. Thread count is simply the number of yarns per square inch of fabric, and microfiber can squeeze in a high number because its fibers are purposely made to be tiny.

The earliest occupants of the region were, like other paleolithic peoples, gathers and hunters who made and used fairly rough Stone tools. Nevertheless, around 28,000 years ago people had gained access to some of the iron tools produced on the continent and begun to experiment with food production and irrigation. Though the Sri Lankan civilization has been shaped largely by that of the Indian subcontinent it had a continuous record of human settlement for more than two millennia.
