One word: SLOTHS!!! More words: This place offers a great ride on their "safari" truck where, armed with buckets of dry food, you'll be driven throughout their vast property and have a chance to see, pet (in most cases), and feed llamas, zebras, giant horned cows (not their scientific name), and emus. Or maybe they were ostriches.... Either way - the birds were very "insistent" so keep a good grip on the feed bucket. #protip I highly recommend doing the sloth encounter! Coolest thing I've done in a while - and yes, I know I need to get out more, but hey - these sloths rocked!!

Oh man...this was the best part of my vacation. It was so. Ice fun interacting with the animals. Be sure to get plenty of food to feed them. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this. Do be mindful they will come into your car. So be ready for food to get everywhere and your car may get dirty too from them being muddy.

Family Fun! Alabama Safari Park is perfect for all ages. Its a self guided 3 mile safari that features dozens of animals from all over the world. With your admission you're able to drive thru the safari as many times as your desires. Animal feed can be purchased at the entrance. I would recommend at least one per person. Be careful of the llamas they are a bit feisty and may get away with the feed bucket! After the drive thru fun head over to the Village Walk Thru to see some barn yard friends and meet and feed the most beautiful giraffes. Can you guess what our favorite animal was? 10/10, highly recommend! Follow me on IG @thee_travelinggemini for more travel content and flight deals!

This was my second time going here yesterday. The drive-through area is full of most of the same animals all the way through. You drive through a large area and the animals come up to your car and you can feed them food bought in small containers when you enter the park. The food is five dollars per bucket. You have to be careful and hang onto the bowls, or the animals will pull them out of your hands. I will specially get them from small children who can't hold onto the bowls very well If you go on a very hot day, most of the animals Stick close together under the shade trees and stuff. Drive slowly when you go through. The part I enjoyed the most, was at the end. When you get out of your car at the gift shop, you can walk across to the area where you can feed and pet, the goats and a few pigs. They have a place where you can walk in and birds are just flying everywhere which is pretty cool . Don't scream on the birds fly around or land on you. They have ducks. There's a place on this side where you can also buy lettuce to feed the giraffe. There is a area where they have a couple of sloths behind glass. All in all it's OK. It's about $20 to get in and then you pay for the food to give them.

What a wonderful, unexpected find near Montgomery! We went to the Safari Park with relatively low expectations and we were impressed! All of us have been on safaris on the continent of Africa before, and I think we were amazed by how much interaction you could have the animals here. They came right up to the car, whether or not you had food or not but clearly, they were looking for food. The price of admission got you just that but you could purchase buckets of feed to use throughout the ride, and the attendant was kind enough to let us know which animals will eat a lot, and potentially also knock the bucket out of our hands! So, we began driving well-informed and fed a number of animals. We were a little surprised by how comfortable they were sticking their heads in the car to eat, and to just look around it seemed. We rolled the windows up when there were animals that we definitely did not want coming into the car. There was a good variety of animals - camels, llamas, ostriches, emus, bison, kudus, wildebeest, impala, blackbucks, zebras, impalas, and watusi. After we finished the drive, we had a chance to go and see the goats, pigs, and feed the birds. There was also a giraffe feeding area, and you could purchase greens to feed them as well. They had a little outback with kangaroos that you could walk through and see. The value here was pretty good for $25 a ticket. They also offer a military discount which is $2 off and the entire party can use it if you purchase it inside the park as it can't be applied online. This activity was great for kids and adults as well. Highly recommend

It was fun at first but after a while it was just the animals spilling the food in my car. I laughed a lot though.

2/15/23 First time visitor. Got there around 11 am on a Wednesday. Park was pretty empty. ADMISSION: We got our tickets at the gift shop. Miss Daphne greeted us and was super pleasant to talk to. FEEDING ANIMALS: Is extra and can add up. I agree with other Yelpers that 3 to 4 buckets will help you get through the park. They don't give extra buckets, so if you bring a couple of extra plastic cups to separate the feed a bit it'll help you to ration. But feed the animals out of the white buckets only. When we were done, we went back to the gift shop and bought lettuce for the giraffes and budgie sticks for the parakeets. LLAMAS: We were ambushed immediately by these THUGS. They will step right in front and block you from moving forward while their accomplices approach you on the side. They won't let any of the smaller mammals feed either. They will also chase after your car too! CAMELS: Be prepared to lose your ENTIRE bucket of feed as they will grab onto the bucket too. I can see where choosing not to feed the animals could be an option for some as it can be intimidating and scary for young children. Realizing that these are WILD animals, you're not allowed to pet them and they could bite, I made sure I had food to feed them if my window was rolled down. If you point out the different looking piles of poo, and ask them to match the animal with their poo, that may be the thing that keeps some kids more engaged if they need a distraction from some of the animals. We were able to take our time and pulled on the side to let some cars pass us. When you're done, there's a walking portion where you'll see the goats, anteaters, an aviary, kangaroos, lemurs and then giraffes. Admission covers you all day. With the two of us, we did it in about 2-2.5 hours.

This was an awesome experience! They have the giraffes separated on their own spot with a nice little fenced walking trail with other animals around. On the same side of the entrance you'll see the picnic tables and the walkway to it. They have a gift shop and that's where you get the food to feed the animals. The drive is a good way so make sure you get plenty of food for the duration of the drive if you want the animals to come close to your car. They do not come if you don't have food, lol . Also, make sure you're ok with your car being bumped (no real damage happened to my car but it could). They have zebras, llamas, goats and camels but the camels are gated so you have to drive close by to feed them. The speed is very slow while you go through as all the animals are scattered. Make sure the driver is not distracted and that you guys stop completely before you feed the animals. Overall, we enjoyed the experience and my kids and nieces want to come back again.

Absolutely terrifying at first but super fun. I would definitely do this again if I ever drove by it. It's still a surreal experience.

Overall great experience. The llamas are pretty demanding. We did get four buckets for the three of us. We also brought bigger empty buckets as suggested and do

Must-See Montgomery: Alabama Safari Park

Filed Under: Fun Things for Kids , My Home's In Alabama , Southern Three Day Weekend Ideas 7 Comments

safari montgomery al

Updated: I wrote this post in June 2018 but we visited Alabama Safari Park for the second time on July 6th, 2018 and got to experience it all again with my mom and Caroline. I’ve added pics from our second trip since they were so much fun!

Have you ever been up-close to the spiral horns of gazelle or petted a pack of zebras on their heads? Have you ever had to stop and wait for a flock of baby emus to cross the road?

You don’t have to go to Africa to experience these majestic animals in person. We did all that and more a few weeks back, and we never left the state of Alabama.

safari montgomery al

About 20 minutes south of Montgomery just off I-65 at the Hope Hull exit #158 sits one of the best adventures that Alabama has to offer.

The Alabama Safari Park recently opened to the public, and if you are anywhere within an easy drive it is totally worth the trip. Garrett and I visited on a whim after we took a trip to Old Alabama Town in Montgomery a few weeks back. And honestly, after our trip through the Safari park, we almost totally forgot about the Old Alabama Town experience when we got home. It was that much fun!

safari montgomery al

Driving through the entrance gate reminded me of a certain movie that didn’t end well for some of the main characters. And the emus totally reminded me of velociraptors, so brace yourselves for an adventure.

Alabama Safari Park vs jurassic park

We stopped at the store and bought two buckets of animal feed, then proceeded to get attacked by animals of every variety as soon as we crossed through the front gate. Ok, not literally attacked, but a camel did try to chew my rear-view mirror off at one point. And there was an angry ostrich who I refused to roll down the window for. I’ve seen that episode of Dirty Jobs where Mike Rowe gets attacked by the ostrich. No thanks. 🙂

angry ostrich pecking window

Luckily there was nobody waiting in line to get inside behind us so we were able to take it all in without feeling rushed. It was AWESOME!!

Alabama Safari Park feeding the llamas

We laughed our heads off at these crazy animal antics. Like, literally SCREAMED with laughter. I have never heard Caroline belly laugh this hard in her entire life!  THIS is what it’s all about, right here:

That is the sweetest giggle on Earth.

There were more “common” animals like llamas and camels and emus, but there were also exotic animals like zebras and gazelles and watusi cattle. There were African animals I have never even heard of until this trip.

Here are the Watusi- check out the horns on this guy!

feeding watusi cattle in alabama

There are lots of animals that hang out in the shade and don’t come to your car no matter how much coaxing you offer them.  The water buffalo were way more interested in the grass than my bucket of processed pellets.

safari montgomery al

But the ZEBRAS?!?!! OH MY GOODNESS THEY ARE AMAZING!!

safari montgomery al

They are so sweet and just beautiful animals. Their stripes are a sight to behold. I have never been this close to a zebra before but it was a crazy awesome experience. Caroline LOVED them.

safari montgomery al

They even have Scottish Highlander coos! Unfortunately, the coos were hiding somewhere in the shade when we visited the first time so I don’t have pics to share inside my Outlander fan groups.

(But on our second visit we got up close and personal with this snuggly Scottish sweetie!!! I was so excited to see this wee beastie headed toward our car! )

highland coo in alabama safari park

Since words don’t quite do justice to just HOW much we laughed on this trip, I made a little video highlighting all the best animal encounters that we had in the park. I have seriously not laughed this hard in a long time.

Check out our adventure from start to finish here. I apologize in advance for all the screaming and crazy country-accented cackling:

If you are ever headed to the beach down I-65 and need a place to stop and let the kids have some fun, this is THE place to go. You can literally see it off the interstate between Hope Hull/ Pintlala if you know where to look. And if you live anywhere in the state of Alabama, it’s worth the trip.

Here’s my advice to anyone planning to visit.

10 Things to Know Before you Visit Alabama Safari Park

  • Go to the potty before you arrive. There are Love’s and Flying J truck stops right at the interstate exit about a mile from the park. I seriously almost peed my pants laughing at one point, and there were not working restrooms at the park yet. Just a Port-a-potty trailer. So yeah. Pee first.
  • Read the back of the brochure they hand you when you buy your food. There are rules you’re supposed to follow that we broke quite a bit- like rolling up the window when an animal is running toward you at full speed. That is a no-no, but we didn’t read that until after we got home, so my apologies to the angry ostrich who tried to break the glass to get to our food inside.
  • Read the inside of the brochure. All the animals that live in the park are listed alphabetically, so you can pretend to be the expert on African animals by telling your kids the names of each animal instead of just screaming “What the heck is that!?!” the whole time like I did.
  • Buy a spare bucket of food (or two).  If an animal snatches an entire bucket of food out of your kid’s hands right at the entrance gate they are gonna be super sad and it’s a one-way ride so there’s no turning back. So just buy more food to start with. Trust me.
  • As long as it’s not too crowded there is not a limit on how many times you can circle through. We actually made two loops through the park because one time was just not enough. We bought more food for the second trip and made it last longer since we were older and wiser.
  • It was more crowded on our second loop, so I learned that I was supposed to pull over to the side and let other cars pass me instead of stopping right in the middle and blocking the flow of traffic. Please pull over out of the way if you want to stop for 5 minutes and enjoy petting each animal.
  • There are giraffes but they are over by the petting zoo, not out in the open area that you drive through. There’s also a budgie aviary where you can feed them popsicle sticks covered in bird seed as well as a petting zoo with goats and pigs. So don’t miss all that if you want the full experience. You get to feed him one nice green leaf, like the very hungry caterpillar.
  • If you are a germophobe or have a fear of being eye-to-eye with large beasts, this is probably not the place for you.
  • Take hand sanitizer and baby wipes. Remember that whole “no restroom” thing?
  • You WILL  have to vacuum and wash your car afterward to get all the food pellets out of your floorboards and llama-slobber off your windows. Just roll with it. It’s fun.

safari montgomery al

And my last piece of advice:

If you see a camel walking around with a bucket of food on his head, avoid him at all costs.

safari montgomery al

I’ve watched these so many times now- just love hearing y’all laugh like that. When are you taking me? Mom

Beth

I have watched it over and over and I laugh every time. Let’s go next week!

Looking to spend a few nights under the stars, surrounded by Alabama’s beauty this fall?

Throughout Alabama, there are plenty of state parks that offer visitors the chance to do just that, whether they prefer camping in a tent, RV, “glamping” safari tent or cabin, and all of them have a long list of activities, from ziplines to guided hikes, and amenities, like swimming pools and on-site dining, to make the trip worthwhile.

In fact, the hardest part might be deciding which state park is the best pick for you, and that’s where this list comes in. You can get a rundown of what sort of camping (and lodging) each park offers as well as an idea of how you might want to spend your time there at just 10 of Alabama’s state parks. To see the camping opportunities at all of them, visit the state park’s website.

Gulf State Park features at least three places to launch a kayak. The boat launch at the park's Nature Center offers particularly good facilities and access.

If you want to camp for the night near Alabama’s beautiful white sandy beaches, Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores is the place you need to go. The park offers nearly 500 full-hookup sites with paved pads, picnic tables and pedestal grill tops as well as eight primitive sites for campers, whether spending the night in an RV or a tent, can use. Plus, while there you’ll have access to 11 bathhouses, a laundry facility and a camp store as well as park amenities like 28 miles of hiking trails, a swimming pool with splash pad and, of course, the park’s 3.5 miles of shoreline. Oh, and if you’re not a fan of camping, the park also offers a lodge, cabins and lakeside cottages you can book for a night or two.

During your trip, you can enjoy a wide range of amenities, from fishing on Cheaha Lake to hiking one of its many trails to Bald Rock Outlook, Pulpit Rock or one of the park’s many scenic waterfalls.

Chewacla State Park

Another great state park to spend a few days if you’re a fan of biking is Chewacla State Park in Auburn. In addition to several mountain bike and multi-use trails, the park offers sites for primitive and RV camping, both of which have access to their own bathhouse. In addition, there are also cabins and glamping safari tents, which combine “luxury and the great outdoors” by including beds, a mini-fridge and more, available if you’re looking to keep things comfy. If you’re not into biking, the park also has plenty of other amenities, like boat rentals, to check out as well as hiking trails to explore.
