The still-unreleased “Favourite” was a highlight of the setlist. “It’s unanimously our favorite tune that we’ve ever written, without a doubt,” singer Grian Chatten says. “We haven’t played it once so far without kind of lapsing into personally experienced emotions of our own.”

The band gathered around a piano to pose for a group shot, then grabbed a copy of the beloved children’s book Goodnight Moon that was sitting nearby. They began an impromptu waltzy sing-a-long of the entire book, made up on the spot, with harmonies by Chatten and Deego.

For  Romance , the band “somewhat consciously changed our clothes” and worked with a new producer, James Ford (Blur, Jessie Ware). “We drew a lot from films like Akira  during a lot of the writing process,” he adds.

Fontaines D.C. Are at the Height of Their Powers With Skinty Fia

"I think this record is probably the most realized we’ve ever been as a band," says frontman Grian Chatten

Fontaines D.C. Are at the Height of Their Powers With Skinty Fia

Only four years ago, Fontaines D.C. released their first set of singles — one of which being “Boys In The Better Land,” an anthemic romp about the idea that the grass is always greener on the other side. Now, the boys of Fontaines D.C. have moved to London to see for themselves.

For their brilliant third album, Skinty Fia —which is undoubtedly their most complex and nuanced album yet—the Irish rockers are digging even deeper into their Irish identity, looking both outward and inward, and offering empathetic observations and plainspoken truths.

The expansive sound that Fontaines D.C. employs on  Skinty Fia (out Friday, April 22nd) is a logical advancement from 2020’s Grammy-nominated A Hero’s Death , but the storytelling throughout points to a band totally unafraid of the unknown. “There were stories on this record that are not about me and that are not about Dublin and that are not about anyone in our band,” says frontman Grian Chatten. “They’re stories with empathy and tales through which we relate.”

Chatten and the rest of the band have never been strangers to poetic post-punk, but  Skinty Fia is as bold and beautiful as ever. There are long passages of detailed anecdotes, electrifying moments of rock, and more experimentation than any previous Fontaines D.C. record. One song, the affecting and sensitive “The Couple Across The Way,” details a couple’s fiery argument, but rather than employ a sunny indie rock sound a la Arlo Parks’ “Caroline” (which features a similar subject matter), the song is just Chatten and an accordion, ever so removed from the fraught conflict.

And unsurprisingly, Chatten couldn’t be feeling more confident about the record. “Our powers were at their maximum potential and we were privileged with a year, essentially, without traveling,” says Chatten. “We were able to look around and actually put them to good use.”

Indeed, Skinty Fia is the furthest iteration of the Fontaines D.C. project yet—the scrappy angst that characterized songs like “Boys In The Better Land” has mutated into an even more emotional, deliberate, and nuanced portrait of both Irishness and humanity. Chatten agrees: “I think this record is probably the most realized we’ve ever been as a band.”

Consequence chatted with Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten about  Skinty Fia , the inspiration points for the album, being on tour, and more. Check out the full Q&A below.

You’re about six weeks away from the release of  Skinty Fia . Do you feel nervous at all?

I don’t have a nerve on me anymore. To be honest with you, the sort of lead up to the release of that first single (“Jackie Down The Line”), I was pretty nervous. It was kind of that thing where, for us anyway, relatively speaking, it had been a while since we had released an album. We released the first two in such quick succession, that this one… it’s the same thing with the vaccine. I went for the third shot the other day and all of a sudden I developed a phobia of needles. For the third one!

So, I had fear releasing the first thing off this record that wasn’t really there in the pre-existing records. It just went down so well, especially the last tune we put out, “ I Love You ,” it seemed to hit and people connected with it in exactly the way I wanted them to. So, I’m not really nervous at all to be honest.

Fontaines D.C. Are Always Looking Ahead

Carolyn Droke

A lot of bands might call themselves the “best band in the world,” but Fontaines D.C. is one of the few who can actually claim the title. Hailing from Dublin, the five-piece band bagged a trophy for Best Band In The World at the NME awards this year. But that’s not the only win Fontaines D.C. have had lately.

Their recently released post-punk album Skinty Fia went No. 1 in the UK and Ireland, and they celebrated by performing to a crowd of over 50,000 at Primavera Sound. On top of that, the group’s 2020 sophomore album A Hero’s Death was Grammy-nominated for Best Rock album and earned a nod for Best International Group at the BRITs. But despite their impressive superlative and Fontaines D.C.’s coveted nominations, vocalist Grian Chatten remains humble.

For Chatten, getting the chance to write songs for a living is far more important than any award or accolade he could ever receive. “There’s a fair few jobs that I could be doing that’d I’d be happy with, 9-5’s that I can think of,” he says over the phone just before Fontaines D.C. took the stage at the inaugural Primavera Sound LA . “I’d love to work in a bookshop. I think I’d be basically as happy as I am now as long as I could go home and write for myself.”

Chatten’s in it for the music, and Fontaines D.C.’s critical recognition is just a cherry on top. Well, most of the time it is. Their newfound fame also had a few drawbacks that came with international attention, like when the band found themselves in a highly publicized chart battle with Taylor Swift . A Hero’s Death was racing to No. 1 in the UK at the same time as Taylor Swift’s Folklore was climbing the charts, unintentionally pitting the two artists against each other. “We got death threats and all that kind of stuff,” Chatten recalls, chuckling at the memory of getting on the wrong side of Swift’s, shall we say, emboldened fanbase. “That whole world is just beyond me. I don’t really even try and understand it. One thing I would say is that they’re dedicated fans.”

But now, Fontaines D.C. find themselves, like Swift, embraced by a global fanbase. After being unable to tour much behind their 2020 Grammy-nominated release, the band has just embarked on a months-long global tour. They’ll make stops across the US, Europe, Australia, Japan, and play three sold-out shows in their Dublin hometown. Toasting the band’s massive success and lengthy tour, Chatten sat down with Uproxx to talk Ian Curtis comparisons, future plans, and how performing on stage is as close as he can get to having a “positive” panic attack.

Fontaines D.C.

Your last album, A Hero’s Death was nominated for Grammy and for a BRIT award when it was released. What was your reaction to hearing that you were Grammy nominated? Was that something that you ever thought would happen when you first started the band?

I don’t think so. It’s difficult for me to tell — we kind of shrouded ourselves in this blind optimism from the get-go and I don’t know to what extent that was real. I think the whole point of it was to not know how much it was real. We told ourselves at the very beginning that we were great, but we did have extreme self-doubt, like anyone does. My reaction was — I couldn’t believe it. I thought there was a mistake, you know what I mean? And it felt like this weird infiltration. I think a lot of people say that, and it’s probably a little bit self-aggrandizing to say that. It felt like we must have gotten in a back door somewhere.

And can you tell me about how you felt being nominated in the same category as artists like The Strokes?

The Strokes were huge for us as a band whe growing up. They’re kind of a good soundtrack to our friendship as well. I’m glad they won it, to be honest. I’m glad they won it because I think they deserve it, they have deserved one for years and I think it’s mad that they didn’t have one already. And I think that their last album was really, really admirable. There’s a tenacity to it. Genuinely, I really prefer them winning it to us winning it, honestly.

Speaking about your success as well, you were recently named the Best Band in the World by NME. I was wondering if you recall a certain moment — I know you said that you kind of started the band with blind optimism — but do you recall a certain moment where you really felt like you made it as a band?

I used to worry about my inability to feel or dwell on achievements. I used to think that it was a kind of shortcoming on my behalf and it was a signal of my non-presence in the moment. But now, I actually just think that it’s just kind of in my makeup to look ahead. The most important thing for me, the thing that gives me existential value, is songwriting; Songwriting and lyric writing or poetry, finding expression in words and in music. And I mean that sincerely. It takes up so much of my mental space and my heart that I don’t have time or space to look backwards on awards and titles like Best Band In The World and all that. I feel it kind of just induces fear. I don’t really want to feel ever like I’m on top of anything. I’m much more comfortable punching up.

I’m curious to hear too about how your family and your hometown have reacted to your band’s success. I’m sure that they’re pretty proud, right?

Dublin’s a bit scary for me now. I get recognized quite a bit. It can be a bit difficult to go to — a lot of my favorite spots, a lot of my favorite pubs are basically no-go areas for me now because I’ll just end up having a conversation that I’m not invested in for the whole night with someone who is being really nice but is not my friend or family. But Dublin fans are really funny because they stay slagging, they give you a hard time, which is really Irish and really funny. But if it happens a hundred times in one day, it actually can get to you.

So talking a little bit about your tour and your live shows, do you and your band have any pre-show rituals that you do together before you go out on stage?

I think the ritual happens to me, whether I like it or not. It’s in the sort of two hours before a show, I start this slow wave of anxiety and adrenaline. Energy basically comes over me and it’s kind of like the moments before vomiting, it’s like I’m almost retching with anxiety and energy. I think I’m prone to overstimulation. If too many people are moving in a room or people keep walking in and out of a room, I have to run. I get kind of overstimulated. And that’s basically the feeling that I have for an hour before the show. It’s really uncomfortable and I can’t stop moving around and touching things and picking things up and putting them down and jumping up and down.

And I’m not focused. I’ll be talking to people, but it’ll almost be like I’m blacked out. I don’t know what I’m saying. I’m not listening to them. It’s really weird. It’s just excitement, it’s nervous energy and stuff like that. Me and [Conor] Curley have to do a pretty good shot of tequila right before we go on. That’s kind of our thing.

That anxious, nervous energy, do you release it on stage or does it stay with you when you’re on stage?

I release it on stage. Like the gig is the vomit, you know what I mean? I always have a huge sense of relief, euphoria, and endorphins rushing after a show. But during the gig, my body is tense for the whole thing. My toes curl up for the whole gig and I come off stage and I realize because my feet are f*cking killing me. I think it’s almost like a positive version of an anxiety attack. It’s like, I’ve got way too much energy in my body on stage. I really enjoy gigs. Touring is really difficult, and I have a lot of problems with the rest of the mechanics of touring and stuff. But gigs are blessing for me.

You talked a little bit about how being back in Dublin can be kind of weird because you get recognized all the time, but I want to hear about what your hometown shows are like, because I know that the end of this tour has three back-to-back sold-out shows in Dublin. I can imagine that they get pretty crazy, right?

The last couple we’ve done felt like there’s been this pent-up energy. Dublin is in a really kind of strange state in terms of government and cost of living and what it’s like to be a young person there. I think there’s a lot of dissatisfaction amongst young people in Dublin at the moment, for good reason. They know that, we know it, and they know that we know it. And when we play a show in Dublin, there’s this collective expression. I feel like we’re all singing on behalf of each other for a common purpose. And that’s really, really powerful. It’s probably the most communal I’ve ever felt at a gig was our last Dublin show.

Fontaines D.C.

Now that you’ve played some shows in the US, is there anything that has surprised you about your American audience?

I’m really surprised about how much they connect with our songs which are based on stories of life in Dublin. To me, there’s a specificity to our lyrics that I didn’t think would translate as well as it has. And that’s been amazing to see. We played a show in Salt Lake City and I really had no idea what to expect from an audience there, with my preconceptions about what people who lived in Salt Lake City were going to be like. But it kicked off. That was amazing.

This is something that came up a lot when I was reading some of your interviews and people just writing about you. Something that I see a lot is people calling you, “This generation’s Ian Curtis,” what do you have to say to that?

Yeah, I’ve been hearing that for f*cking years. I don’t know. I feel like we’ve made so much music that isn’t similar to them at this stage. I don’t look like him, do I? People say that I do, but I don’t agree.

You don’t think he’s your celebrity lookalike?

Not really. Maybe there’s a physical movements similarity and I don’t know, but I think he was a genius. So, I’m pretty cool with that. I’m going to keep doing my own thing though.

Fontaines D.C.

Now that you’ve been named The Best Band In The World by NME and you’ve been nominated for Grammy, what’s your next goal for your band?

Honestly, it’s just really… I feel boring sometimes because I feel I keep answering in the same way, but it’s really just about songwriting. It’s so simple. I love songwriting and I’m really just looking forward to doing more songwriting. And that’s such an uninteresting thing to say. One thing I’m really looking forward to is collaboration. I feel strong enough in [Fontaines DC’s] identity as an artist now that I’m really open to collaboration and I’d love to write with someone else’s voice. I think I’m really limited as a vocalist. I think I’d really love to write songs for female voice.

Nice, like a songwriter for a bigger pop star or something?

Yeah, maybe. I’ve got a lot of friends who are in bands who aren’t necessarily bigger or pop stars. There’s a band called Sorry from London. Actually, do you know what? I actually want to go on the record and say I think [Asha Lorenz] is genius. And I’ve never said that word in an interview before about someone alive. I think she is a genius. I’ve heard the record that they’re putting out soon. I’ve heard the whole thing and it’s just jaw-dropping. I’d love to write with her. I think her voice is so cool as well. If she was willing, I’d love to direct that voice for one show.

Fontaines D.C. Skinty Fia

April 22, 2022

The year 2019 already feels like the distant past for most of us, but for Fontaines D.C. , it really must seem like another lifetime—and that has less to do with the pandemic than their own skyrocketing success in spite of it. Pretty much everything that defined this band three years ago, when they dropped their debut LP, Dogrel , has already changed. Once the scrappy underdogs who ironically declared “ I’m gonna be big! ”, the Dublin-bred quintet have headlined arena shows for crowds of 10,000 in the UK, appeared on CNN , scored a Grammy nomination ( outside the Alternative category ghetto , no less), and crossed “ multiple appearances on Jimmy Fallon ” off their bucket list. Where they once reanimated familiar post-punk and garage-rock influences with a pugilistic intensity, these days they’re more keen on arranging choral harmonies and crooning squeeze-boxed ballads. Even the band’s essential Irishness—reflected in their site-specific lyrics and baked right into their very name—is now up for debate: With four members currently living in England’s capital, Fontaines D.C. can now be more accurately rebranded as Fontaines LDN.

But while one’s identity can be greatly shaped by their home environment, it’s often hardened by their distance from it. On the band’s third album in four years, Skinty Fia , Fontaines D.C. detail what it’s like to be the boys in a not-so-better land, as Irish expats who may share the same skin tone and speak the same language as England’s dominant culture, but who are instantly singled out the moment their accents are revealed in mixed company. Named for an arcane Irish slur that translates to “damnation of the deer”—which, for Fontaines’ purposes, functions as a vivid metaphor of cultural mutation and degradation— Skinty Fia is a record about living in a place that looks like home but doesn’t feel like it. Fontaines D.C. use that feeling of placelessness to their advantage, seizing the opportunity to reinvent themselves on a track-by-track basis.

On their 2020 release, A Hero’s Death , Fontaines D.C. already sounded eager to check out of the post-punk revival they helped rally, frequently downshifting into moodier and more melodic territory. Skinty Fia further hammers home the point that this band’s true peers aren’t IDLES and Yard Act , but rather bands like Iceage and the Horrors —groups that erected rigid stylistic barriers only to delight in bulldozing them with each subsequent record. Fitting for an album inspired by moving to London and missing Dublin, Skinty Fia finds its spiritual center at the approximate midway point of Manchester, a city whose rich musical history—evolving out of post-punk into indie-pop, rave-rock, and stadium-sized Britpop—provides Fontaines D.C. with a roadmap of paths to explore.

So while the first thing we hear on Skinty Fia is an urgent Joy Division -esque bassline, the song that’s built on top of it—“In ár gCroíthe go deo”—could never be confused for an Unknown Pleasures outtake. Instead, that rhythmic pulse serves as the unsettled foundation for bassist Conor Deegan III and guitarist Conor Curley’s haunted harmonies, which repeat the title—the Irish phrase for “in our hearts forever”—with funereal solemnity before Chatten’s cries into the void and Tom Coll’s jungle-patterned drum beats steer the song toward its stormy conclusion. Tellingly, Fontanies’ first album as Londoners also marks the first time they’ve foregrounded their homeland’s native tongue in song, and it’s not just for ornamental purposes: The titular phrase was at the center of a media controversy in 2020, when the family of a deceased Irish woman who lived in Coventry, UK tried to have it transcribed on her tombstone, only for the Church of England to demand it include an English translation. For a recent transplant like Chatten, that news story provided a crash course in living as an Irishman in England, where cultural identity is something you have to keep fighting for even when you’re dead.

That homesick, fish-out-of-water feeling manifests itself in myriad ways on Skinty Fia : Where the title track channels Chatten’s uneager-to-please outsider attitude into a strobe-lit industrial funk swagger, “Bloomsday” is a wistful farewell to Dublin, rendered as a melancholic gothgaze soliloquy. But in Chatten’s case, living outside his homeland also provides him with a greater clarity and objective distance to properly diagnose its current condition. Though he’s always balanced shamrock-tattooed pride with tough-love critique, he’s never written a song as angry and anguished as “I Love You.” What begins as a misty-eyed ode to his country gives way to a laundry-list screed on why its brightest minds may feel compelled to leave it, as Chatten sounds off on the church scandals, economic instability, and suicide epidemics that have ingrained a sense of hopelessness in Irish youth. When Chatten disrupts the song’s dreamy atmosphere to rail about his island being “run by sharks with children’s bones stuck in their jaws,” it’s like the Stones Roses ’ “I Wanna Be Adored” being gate-crashed by John Cooper Clarke.

Those drawn to Fontaines for the first-pump fervor of songs like “Big” and “A Hero’s Death” may find Skinty Fia a more forbidding proposition: Tracks like the disintegrated dirge “How Cold Love Is” and the Unhappy Mondays groover “Nabakov” don’t exactly lend themselves to pint-smashing sessions with the lads. But the real triumph of Skinty Fia is that Fontaines D.C.’s most musically adventurous and demanding album to date is also its most open-hearted. While Chatten’s voice remains a blunt instrument, he now wields it more elegantly, striking a perfect balance between tough and tender: On the self-loathing cad anthem “Jackie Down the Line,” he applies a Wembley-ready wail to a Smithsian sway and delivers the sort of capital-c Choon that all but guarantees Fontaines an opening slot on the Oasis reunion tour whenever the Gallaghers finally get their shit together. And on “Roman Holiday,” he paints a beautifully smeared portrait of young Irish lovers making the streets of Londontown their own, haters be damned, tapping into a stream-of-consciousness magic realism that approaches the heady heights of mid-’90s Verve .

But even those moments of grace won’t prepare you for “The Couple Across the Way,” where Fontaines’ exploratory impulses and dogged romantic spirit intersect in a mournful ballad that echoes John Barry’s Midnight Cowboy theme —albeit performed entirely by Chatten on accordion. Inspired by the singer’s actual Rear Window -esque observations of his neighbors, the song voyeuristically peers into the flat of an argumentative older couple trapped in a perpetual state of verbal warfare, “after 23 years of the same.” In the midst of apologizing to his wife for his latest destructive outburst, the husband makes a comment that’s as poignant as it is devastating: “Across the way moved in a pair with passion in its prime/Maybe they look through to us and hope that’s them in time.” By burrowing into Fontaines D.C.’s particular experiences as strangers in a strange land, Skinty Fia ultimately homes in on the eternal fears—of growing old, bored, bitter, and unloved—that unite us all.

Skinty FIA (Deluxe Double LP)

Couldn't load pickup availability

Double-LP on 45rpm 180gm black vinyl, housed in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves. Alternate cover artwork & 20 page lyric book.

2020's A Hero's Death saw Fontaines D.C. land a #2 album in the UK, receive nominations at the GRAMMYs, BRITs and Ivor Novello Awards, and sell out London's iconic Alexandra Palace.

Now the band return with their third record in as many years: Skinty Fia. Used colloquially as an expletive, the title roughly translates from the Irish language into English as "the damnation of the deer"; the spelling crassly anglicized, and its meaning diluted through generations. Part bittersweet romance, part darkly political triumph - the songs ultimately form a long-distance love letter, one that laments an increasingly privatized culture in danger of going the way of the extinct Irish giant deer.

For Fontaines D.C., a move to London reaffirmed the band's Irish identity

  • "How Cold Love Is"
  • "Jackie Down the Line"
  • "Skinty Fia"

The post-punk band Fontaines D.C. is so strongly associated with their hometown of Dublin, Ireland, that it came as surprise that the band had relocated to — of all places — London. It was a move made during the pandemic that showed the band was willing to make concessions to their aspirations as a band. But it also had another effect: It reaffirmed their Irish identities and helped them appreciate what they had.

It's not quite a fish-out-of-water story, but Skinty Fia asks big questions about what it means to be Irish — even when you're away from home. I caught up with guitarists Carlos O'Connell and Conor Curley as they embarked on a U.S. tour on release day for Skinty Fia . That, plus a live live performance recorded in front on a live audience at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia in this session.

Ticket Prices and food options

Tickets to attend a game at Levi's Stadium are some of the most expensive in the NFL. A state-of-the-art stadium with a contending team does come with a cost to see them live. However the cost is worth it for a wonderful experience and the chance to watch one of the best teams in the NFL.

Tickets range from $150-$200 for nosebleed seats to upwards to $500+ for key seats. The most expensive games will be against other elite contenders with big-name stars like Oct. 27 against the Cowboys or Oct. 20 against the reigning champion Chiefs.

More affordable games will be against relatively lower-level teams. Great games to catch in this class would be Dec. 8 against the Bears and Nov. 17 against the Seahawks.

While visiting Levi's Stadium, make sure to explore the diverse culinary scene. The stadium goes beyond the typical game-day fare, with an impressive range of food and beverage options that cater to a variety of dietary preferences. You’ll find everything from hot dogs and pizza to vegan tacos and sushi. Food options at Levi's Stadium stand out for their focus on locally sourced ingredients and commitment to sustainability. It's a fantastic opportunity to savor some local flavors while you enjoy the game or event.
