About the Tampa Bay Lightning

The NHL launched a grand experiment in 1992 by dropping a franchise into the state of Florida. Ice hockey in Florida? Sure, why not?! There have been some rough moments along the way, but more than a quarter-century later, professional hockey has survived the heat – and even thrived at times – in the Sunshine State. Today, that experiment is best known as the Tampa Bay Lightning, the NHL’s first Floridian residents.

Perfect Weather

As most expected, the Lightning didn’t experience instant success as an NHL franchise. Tampa Bay failed to make it to the playoffs in nine of their first 10 seasons and lost the only postseason series they played during that time. Needless to say, it was an inauspicious start for the franchise.

Ground Strike

Fortunately for the Lightning, things started to turn around in 2002. By that time, Vincent Lecavalier had blossomed into a star and become the team’s captain. The same was true of Martin St. Louis, who signed with the Lightning in 2000. Led these two, the Lightning won their first-ever division title and playoff series in 2003. They took things to the next level the following season, winning their second straight division title and ultimately taking home the Stanley Cup, defeating Calgary in a dramatic seven-game series.

Unfortunately, the NHL’s lockout came the season after the Lightning won their title. Things went a little south for Tampa, as they missed the playoffs five times in six seasons between 2008 and 2013. After a rebuilding period, the Lightning returned to prominence and reached the Eastern Conference Finals three times in a four-year period, including a failed trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2015. The Lightning also won the Presidents’ Trophy for the first time during the 2018-19 season, helping maintain their status as one of the top teams in the NHL, despite a few disappointing playoff losses.

Ice installation begins at Amalie Arena for Lightning hockey

tampa bay lightning tour

TAMPA, Fla. — It’s a sign the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey season is about to begin.

“For us, it’s like Christmas Day where we’re putting ice in for the NHL season,” Patrick Jesso, the ice operations manager at Amalie Arena, said.

Amalie Ice 2.jpg

A group of 15 Lightning Ice Crew members have a canvas of 200 feet by 85 feet.

Their work of art is mostly straight lines—some red, some blue—and a few circles.

“We’ll put all the red lines and blue lines, the advertisements, our Lightning logo, and the Amalie Arena logo. Seal that all in,” Jesso said. “Then we’ll start flooding for the next two days after that. By Thursday, we should be set and ready to go for the NHL season."

Amalie Ice 3.jpg

Most of the lines are done by hand.

“The string we will lay out on each side of the rink and freeze that in,” Jesso said. “That will be our outline to indicate our red lines and blue lines. That’s where we paint inside that string.”

The ice is made with over 13,000 gallons of water, applied in layers, and it’s only an inch and a quarter deep when finished.

The ice creation began on Monday. The concrete floor needed to be around 16 degrees on the surface, so water was added slowly in a fine mist to help create an even playing surface.

Amalie Ice 4.jpg

“For the first day or so, we’re going to put white paint down, a couple of layers of water, and freeze that over,” Jesso added.

The Lightning will play their first preseason game on this fresh coat of ice on Sept. 24 against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Jeff Vinik in talks to expand team ownership of the Tampa Bay Lightning

TAMPA, Fla. — In the 14 years Jeff Vinik has owned the Tampa Bay Lightning , he’s transformed the team into a crown jewel of the NHL, along with transforming the area around Amalie Arena.

According to Sportsnet , Jeff Vinik plans to sell a majority stake of his team, valued at $2 Billion, to Blue Owl Capital CEO Doug Ostrover.

Tampa Bay Lightning Links:

Tampa bay lightning schedule tampa bay lightning roster tampa bay lightning tickets view more tampa bay lightning news.

The deal is not yet complete with Vinik retaining full operational control of the Lightning for the next several seasons. He’ll also retain a significant stake in the new ownership group.

Vinik released a statement tonight saying, “I can confirm that we are in discussions to further expand our ownership group of the Tampa Bay Lightning. There will be no change in the day-to-day operations of the Lightning and Vinik Sports Group . I am very excited about what is to come for the organization and we look forward to sharing more when the time is right.”

Vinik transformed a struggling team into back-to-back Stanley Cup champions.

He reportedly purchased the team in 2010 for $170 million, which means Vinik stands to make a huge profit from the sale.

Now, the Lightning sale could be the largest in NHL history, likely breaking the record this past April of the Arizona Coyotes transfer of ownership for $1.2 Billion to a Utah couple.

Bolts Owner Jeff Vinik confirming sale of team talks to TB Business Journal “I can confirm that we are in discussions to further expand our ownership group of the Tampa Bay Lightning. There will be no change in the day-to-day operations of the Lightning and Vinik Sports Group.” — Mike Cairns (@MikeCairns5) August 13, 2024

Rays working to ‘create a new identity’ after flurry of trades

  • Marc Topkin Times staff

ST. PETERSBURG — Some three-week-later reviews of the trade-deadline deals on the Rays’ big-league team are clear:

Outfielder Dylan Carlson, hitting .265 with three homers and a .918 OPS in 12 games (through Friday) has been good.

Infielder Christopher Morel, hitting .135 with a .500 OPS and 16 strikeouts in 60 plate appearances, not so much.

And the offense — whether from trading Randy Arozarena, Isaac Paredes and Amed Rosario, or from facing better pitching, or a combination — clearly has been lacking, averaging a run fewer per game.

Shortstop Taylor Walls, speaking after Wednesday’s sweep-completing loss to Houston, said there has been a hangover effect.

“The deadline’s always tough, too,” Walls said. “You see a lot of friendly faces leave that were big parts of this team. But then guys have got to step up, and we’ve got to come together and find ways to win.

“So it’s just a reevaluation of everybody, individually, as a team, as a lineup, trying to find ways to put it together and kind of create a new identity for ourselves. And I think that that’s going to shape out here in the next few days. Everybody in here is going to be accountable enough to do it.”

In the initial days after the deadline frenzy, in which the Rays also traded a top starter (Zach Eflin) and two veteran relievers (Jason Adam, Shawn Armstrong), there was a definite impact on the clubhouse.

“It’s a different vibe,” starter Zack Littell said. “It’s a different feel. It’s a little bit of a different team. We lost some veteran guys but on the flip side we got some guys that are really exciting, really high energy, and that’s fun.”

Friday, manager Kevin Cash said he likes the way the clubhouse is shaping up.

“I like the mood,” Cash said. “I’d like to think we can win some more games, we had a little bit of a tough skid here against Houston. But the guys have done really good, there’s a good vibe in there, they’re pulling for each other.”

Among other things, Cash praised the amount of communication between the hitters during games, comparing notes on what pitchers are doing.

Veteran Brandon Lowe said being used to the roster shuffling helps.

“I think it’s one of the best parts about an ever-changing clubhouse is you understand that things are going to change, there’s going to be turnover, but also one of the things is nobody gets to this level unless they want to win, unless they hate losing,” Lowe said.

“You understand that it might not always be the moves that you personally want and what you think is going to be the move of the century, but it’s the things that happen. But you understand that guys that come into the clubhouse, everybody in here is hyper-competitive, everybody wants to win at all times. …

“Once (the deadline) goes by, you just focus on playing baseball again. We got good, really good, talent back, and we’re still a good baseball team.”

Reunion tour

The 10-game West Coast road trip that starts Monday will be filled with hellos and goodbyes.

In Oakland, the Rays will bid farewell to the Coliseum, as the A’s are slated to move to Sacramento, Calif., next season and eventually to Las Vegas.

At Dodger Stadium, they’ll see ex-mates Kevin Kiermaier (who was traded from the Jays, and wears No. 93 since his usual 39 is retired for Roy Campanella) and Tyler Glasnow (who won’t be pitching due to elbow tendinitis), along with several others including Brent Honeywell.

And in Seattle, they will reunite with traded outfielders Randy Arozarena and Luke Raley.

Caminero kerfuffle

A fair amount of fans were complaining for weeks, if not months, about why the Rays were taking so long to call up top prospect Junior Caminero. Then when they did summon the 21-year-old infielder on Tuesday, other fans complained that they should have waited until Aug. 26 to preserve his rookie eligibility for 2025.

Assuming he stays active and in the majors the rest of this season, Caminero, with 10 days of service last year, will exceed the 45-day limit, and thus be ineligible to win the 2025 American League Rookie of the Year award, as well as potentially earn the team an extra draft pick.

Rays rumblings

The influx of trade deadline and draft prospects boosted the Rays’ farm system from No. 6 to No. 1 , per MLB.com, with four top 50 prospects : Caminero, 2; Carson Williams, 6; Xavier Isaac, 21; Brayden Taylor, 50. … ESPN moved the Rays from No. 7 to No. 2 , with Williams the No. 3 overall prospect, Caminero 4, Isaac 20, Taylor 58, Aidan Smith 80. … Unclear what to make of the father of the minor girl in the Wander Franco case now planning to petition for charges to be dropped; in January he reportedly sued Franco seeking $250,000. The auction at Thursday’s well-done Rays on the Runway event raised more than $250,000 for the Children’s Dream Fund. … Houston’s Yordan Alvarez dodged responsibility for knocking out the Tropicana Field video board Tuesday with a batting practice home run even though several teammates gave him up. “I’m not paying that bill,” he told MLB.com ’s Brian McTaggart. … Fun bit for Tricia Whitaker, working Friday for Apple TV+, to have Arozarena sing the line about him in Bad Bunny’s song “Nadie Sabe.” … Cash was voted the AL’s second-best manager, behind Texas’ Bruce Bochy, in Baseball America’s annual Best Tools poll of team executives and staff. … Longtime big-leaguer and current Phillies broadcaster John Kruk posted on X after watching the Rays play in their City Connect outfits: “Who designed these Rays uniforms???” After the skateboard theme was explained, he replied, “I kind of like them now.” … Walls should probably cover the dry cleaning bill for Bally’s Ryan Bass after his wayward sports drink toss celebrating Brandon Lowe’s game-winner Friday. ... The Athletic’s way-too-early projected 2028 U.S. Olympic team roster mentions only one Ray, closer Pete Fairbanks as considered but not chosen. Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering, a USF product, was on the squad.
