Titanic exhibition has been going on for a while and it was cool. Visiting the exhibition is like entering a lively museum with a lot of stories and objects. There are parts feel just like you enter the movie to live through the coldness, the storm and different sections of the boat from high class people to working class. Parking is a little difficult and the ticket price is a bit high.

COVID-19: Social distancing is not enforced at this establishment. Some of the staff wears a mask. All visitors are not expected to wear a mask. It's optional now. None of the staff wears gloves. There are some hand sanitizers available for visitors to use. This place is definitely open and available with no limited capacity. They are open Thursday to Sunday from 10AM to 7PM. They are closed Monday to Wednesday. THEY ARE NOT PERMANENTLY CLOSED, YELP. COVID-19 Vaccination Proof: This establishment currently does not require proof of vaccination. While I was here in this establishment several days ago, I asked if they had any special offers and they weren't offering any at the moment. They currently don't have happy hour (duh! It's a museum). They also do not allow pets in their establishment UNLESS it's a service animal. Parking: The parking lot for this establishment is located in the back. Plenty of big parking spots for you to choose from. If the lot is full, you can totally park on the street and walk over. Museum: The museum is very big, beautiful, clean, neat, tidy, informative, and organized. I am a huge Titanic nerd, and I even learned some new information in this museum. I love that they have a green screen and a photo area with props so that people can take pictures and purchase their photos at the gift shop. Staff: The staff here are very friendly, kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. Honestly, all the staff here are just fantastic. Everyone was so lovely to interact with. I also love their cute little gift shop. I bought so many Titanic souvenirs and pictures afterwards. They accept both cash and credit cards. There is no credit card minimum.

It was so cool I definitely recommend it if you have time. I would definitely come back . And my favorite part was that you can put your hand in a real iceberg!

This is a really wonderful exhibition. It includes a lot of artifacts from both the ship and the movie, and is well designed throughout. It takes at least an hour to go through the entire exhibit and is so well done. When you enter the exhibit, you're given a card with a person's name who was on the ship. At the end of the experience, you discover if they survived. (Mine did along with her children, though her husband perished.) The VIP ticket also includes a VR experience and a souvenir photo. If you're a fan of the Titanic movie (who isn't?) or into Titanic history, this is absolutely worth checking out.

Went with our two teen daughters today to experience this exhibit. I've been once before, years ago, when there was one in Kansas City. Not sure if this is the same company or not but the experience is largely the same. Parking is easy, with a free lot provided right next to the building and plenty of street parking. Upon entering, there is a lovely bugler playing the melody from Titanic and welcoming us "aboard". We were each given an info card, assigning us the name of a passenger from that fateful voyage. I got Kate Bourke, a 3rd class passenger from Ireland. My other three family members were given the names of 1st class passengers - my daughter got Guggenheim! Inside the exhibit you will find many artifacts. A lot of dinnerware and pieces of moldings, postcards and photographs. Most of the artifacts are from other ships in the White Star Line, as much of what went down with the Titanic is on the ocean floor. There are several helpful stops which provide information and a place to sit for a moment. When we were there, there were several people walking around in costume. I asked, they don't work there, but they are clearly die hard Titanic enthusiasts. The whole experience takes about 1-2 hours. There are picture opportunities, which can be viewed at the end in the gift shop. The pics range from $12 (digital) to $25 for a printed photo. I liked this exhibit. It's leaving soon to go to Chicago - catch it while you can.

We visited on a Sunday evening when it wasn't too crowded. There was a free parking lot with plenty of spaces. The doorman/security guard welcomed us in, and I noticed that he spoke very elegantly akin to how a doorman greeting passengers of a fancy ship would speak. TK, the host, greeted us when we walked in and explained to us how the exhibit worked. He also spoke in this eloquent and classy way, kind of similar to how they would speak in 1912, and it made us feel like we were actually passengers on the Titanic getting ready to board. The staff did an excellent job setting the tone of this exhibit and pulling visitors back to the past. The exhibit was mostly dimly lit with certain sections warmly lit up like the ballroom in the Titanic movie. There was a photo area where you can stand behind the bow of the ship and recreate the Jack and Rose scene. The exhibit starts with the construction and beginning of the Titanic. There are displays of uniforms worn by captains, silverware and diningware from Olympic and White Star Line, post cards and letters, a few artifacts retrieved from Titanic wreckage, and props from the Titanic movie. You "enter" the ship through a doorway that has suitcases and barrels around it. It leads you into replicas of the rooms corridor, lower class bunker, the first class sitting room, and the grand staircase. You learn about the different classes, workers on the ship, how the ship works, and real-life passengers. Eventually you arrive at the part where there are hints of trouble looming ahead. Warnings of ice bergs from other ships, a video of Titanic's water compartment failure, pictures of lifeboats that they did not have enough of, and a pitch-dark starry night scene. Throughout the whole exhibit, there is music that matches the different scenarios. At the section of the night of the fateful incident, the music changed from cheery jazz music to loud sounds of ice bergs and ship parts falling apart. You can feel how cold the ice berg was, and even walk on water. You can read about how survivors felt that night, and what the final moments were like for the non-survivors left on the ship. The list of the names and statistics of the survivors and non-survivors shows how heartbreaking the event was. The only relief was learning that the Titanic disaster led to many changes improving law and ship regulations in the US and UK. This exhibit was a great and memorable learning experience. Highly recommended for children and ship aficionados. Experts predict that the Titanic wreckage will be gone by 2050. Visit while you still can before the ship decomposes into dust, forever.

Very immersive and pretty interactive exhibition. I didn't expect I'll be emphathy with all the history and story but turned out that I left the exhibition feeling depressed, angry, scared, etc at the same time. The exhibition is self-explanatory with a lot of text that you can read for yourself and videos with intense sound effect to show you when needed. There are some parts I didn't understand why it was there but my friend who watched the movie Titanic could get it immediately so probably you'll be more into it if you've watched the movie and still recall what happened. They have free onsite parking lot and clean restroom. We got VIP+ ticket which includes photo prints, booklet and VR experience. The addition was worth it if you want photos and VR of the submarine that you can control to explore the wreck.

My two friends and I went to this exhibition today and we loved it! The detail and thought that went into the construction of this was rather impressive. The information was beautifully presented and there are some great places to take photos. It wasn't too crowded, and there is a parking lot in the back too. We had a great time!

Terribly overpriced but entertaining for a titanic fan - spent 2 hours walking, reading, laughing etc. Despite the following I enjoyed. From a more objective quality standpoint it's pretty bad - grand staircase is a set that can be made within 2 days, everything very obviously designed to be broken down & reinstalled quickly & cheaply. Loved reading all the posters but you'll need your smartphone for adequate lighting and this info is avail online for free. Hilariously loud throughout, loop of a couple songs from movie soundtrack, shipbuilding sounds. No titanic artifacts. Lots of white starline dishes. Heart of the ocean & Jack/rose costumes from movie are replicas of the actual props/costumes. TLDR: fun for fans, major disappointment for anyone else, tix priced to cover the rent of that large closed grocery store space

Titanic The Exhibition is an interactive exhibition showcasing over 300 artifacts from Titanic and her sister ships and from famous films to tell the chronological, dramatic tale of the design, creation, launch, maiden voyage and tragedy of the largest and most luxurious ship in the world at the time. The artifacts are set inside beautiful fully immersive recreations of the ships interior and tell the latest details of her sinking and discovery. The artifacts are a combination of those that survived the sinking of the Titanic, her sister ships as well as items from the James Cameron blockbuster film Titanic.

Titanic The Exhibition is an interactive experience, where visitors receive a boarding pass corresponding with a passenger on the ship. This allows the visitors to relate to the individual story of their passenger as they explore the first, second and third class galleries and the artifacts from each. They will hear the music of the era as they examine exact recreations of the ship's interiors, stroll the promenade deck, and marvel at the famous Grand Staircase, the social gathering place of the ship.

The stories of love and loss culminate in the final galleries showcasing personal effects and the individual anecdotes surrounding a tribute wall where each passenger’s fate is revealed.  The Discovery Gallery, dedicated to the discovery and research of Titanic’s wreck site, features a raised glass floor; giving an impression of walking along the bottom of the ocean. Broken china and artifacts in the sand below allow visitors to experience what discovery teams saw during dives to Titanic’s wreck site. A striking and informative film, narrated by James Cameron, provides an in-depth look at the most recent forensic research related to the collision, breakup, and sinking of the Titanic. Also featured in the Discovery Gallery, Emory Kristof’s award winning underwater photography of the Titanic lines the walls in a stunning display of the ship’s current state on the sea floor.

In front of the hull of the ship, there are stacks of turn of the century luggage piled up by the door, near thick ropes that are securing the ship to the dock next to a ramp that leads up to the luxurious hallway entrance of the Titanic.

The real Titanic still rests about 13,000-feet underwater in the Atlantic Ocean, where the ship sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg . The legendary vessel is now part of an exhibition that will take guests on an incredibly realistic and immersive journey inside the ship. It also explores its history through a display of hundreds of artifacts, stunning recreations of the ship’s interior, props from James Cameron’s 1997 “Titanic” film and even a close-up look at the ocean floor where the ship currently resides.

Upon arrival, guests are issued boarding passes for this trip and each pass has a direct connection to an actual passenger that was aboard the ship.

“You will come here and you will go back in time,” said Tom Zaller, president and CEO of Imagine Exhibitions, who along with events website Fever, is behind “Titanic: The Exhibition.” It opened earlier this month and runs through mid-January at the Beverly Event Venue in Los Angeles.

“You will be on the dock, looking at the Titanic ship and feel like you’re there on that day,” he added.

This is the North American debut of the traveling exhibition, which has had previous stops in places like Moscow, Russia and Sidney, Australia, as well as several other cities around the world. The exhibition follows Titanic’s journey in chronological order including its design in 1908, the maiden voyage in 1912, the tragic event that sank the ship and its discovery under the sea by Jean-Louis Michel and Robert Ballard in 1985.

“The Titanic story is a human story, it’s a compelling story,” Zaller said. “They called Titanic the ship of dreams; everyone wanted to get to America to start a better life. Our story is among those passengers on the Titanic and I think it’s a timeless story.”

The artifacts

A portion of the story is told through more than 300 artifacts on display that give people an idea of what passengers saw and experienced on board the Titanic, which was one of several ships built by White Star Line.

The collection of artifacts encompass items that survived the sinking of the Titanic, as well as pieces from its sister ships, the Olympic and the Britannic, which were outfitted with many identical features.

“The company made the same stuff for all those ships,” Zaller said. “So everything you see inside the glass boxes is over 100 years old. So these authentic artifacts help support the story we’re telling.”

“The dishes that you see here that were on the Olympic and the Titanic were the exact same,” he added, pointing out items in a display case.

Besides collections of dishes and silverware that are more than a century old, other items include crystal bowl chandeliers, dining room chairs, employee uniforms and a recreation of a first class reading room, which is made up of late Georgian-era furniture including chairs upholstered in floral patterns, wood reading tables and an ornately carved fireplace mantelpiece.

Since the Titanic sank, the majority of these items are from the Olympic, but there are a few pieces from the famed vessel, including a small tea cup and saucer, as well as letters written by passengers from the Titanic, a deck chair and portions of wood rails from the ship.

With the “Titanic” movie returning to theaters in early 2023 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the award-winning film, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack and Kate Winslet as Rose, there are several props from the movie on display as well . Some of the items include a replica of the Heart of the Ocean, the diamond necklace with a blue jeweled heart that Rose threw into the water at the end of the film. There are life vests used in the film, as well as a screenplay of the movie and prop money. There’s also a copy of the picture Jack sketched of Rose wearing the Heart of the Ocean and nothing else.

For those who want to feel like they’re flying on the bow of the ship, just like Jack and Rose in the film, a part of the bow has been recreated in front of a large green screen, so guests can reenact the scene before entering the exhibition.

All aboard!

While the artifacts help visitors visualize what it must have been like to be on the ship, the recreations of the interiors will show exactly what passengers saw as they traveled on the vessel.

“There’s a little bit of history, a little bit of magic, a little bit of excitement and hope, and a little bit of sadness,” Zallar said.

After entering the ship from the dock as music plays, visitors will walk down a long, luxurious red-carpeted hallway, lit by glass dome lights attached to the white ceiling over white wood walls that are adorned with golden scones. The hallway is lined with white doors with gold knobs that the first class passengers would have turned to get to their rooms.

There’s also a jaw-dropping, life-size recreation of the grand stairwell, where Jack and Rose shared some of the film’s most memorable moments. It’s recreated in meticulous detail, with gold trim paint and patterns around its intricate wood and metal rails under the dome ceiling.

Another hallway leads to a different experience passengers had on the ship; the place where lower class ticket holders resided. Down this dimly lit hallway there are small bunk beds where families slept, as well as the steel security doors that separated them from the upper decks.

They can also walk through the boiler room where red-hot boilers powered the ship and there are some images of people who worked there on the walls. Another door leads to the promenade deck of the ship, which is surrounded by a black walls, emblazoned with small lights that make it appear as if you’re outdoors and sailing under the stars in the night sky.

Another tangible and immersive part of this exhibition is the boarding pass that visitors receive upon arrival. Each one has the name of an actual passenger that was aboard the ship. The idea behind that, Zaller explained, is that people will form a more personal connection to the Titanic as they walk through the exhibition as that actual passenger would have on the ship back in 1912.

Near the end of the exhibition, visitors will come across a room that displays various newspaper articles from the time about the sinking of the ship, as well as other memorabilia. In this room, they can search a list of names of the passengers to see if the passenger on their boarding pass survived or not.

“It’s going to be a very powerful moment for people,” Zallar said.

Under the sea

The exhibition ends with a trip to the bottom of the ocean to see the sunken ship. The scene is recreated in a dark room with a glass floor that guests can walk upon that displays images of the wreckage as video from the exploration of the ship plays on screens along the walls.

Zaller assures that this is what the floor around the sunken ship looks like. And he would know because he’s been there.

Nearly two decades ago Zaller dove down to the site of the wreckage and got face to face with the ship.

“When you touch down on the bottom and the muck starts to open up and you see that wreck, it’s an incredibly powerful feeling,” he said. “And that’s why I did that glass floor and, oh yeah, that’s what it looks like. It’s what they call the debris field.”

Titanic The Exhibition takes Los Angeles

  • By Caroline Lenher

Over 110 years ago, the British luxury passenger liner, the HMS Titanic, tragically sank on its maiden voyage. Approximately 2,200 people, 1,300 passengers, were headed to New York City from England; nearly 1,500 lost their lives when the ship struck an iceberg.

The story of the fated ship and its passengers has been told, retold, and re-imagined in books, on stages, and on screens but never as it is in Titanic The Exhibition . This immersive and awe-inspiring event is a journey like no other, with over 300 artifacts, life-size recreations, and virtual reality experiences.

Visitors “board” the ship using the name of an actual passenger. As you embark on your tour, you will experience jaw-dropping recreations of the ship’s exterior and interior and learn the story and fate of your assigned passenger. On your journey, you visit a millionaire’s suite, a stroll on the promenade deck under a starry sky, the galleries, and of course, the grand staircase.

The exhibition includes the Discovery Gallery to experience finding the sunken remains of the ship. You will walk above the sea floor to see the broken artifacts as the discoverers did and see what they saw during their dives. A unique virtual reality experience also offers a new perspective on the ship’s downfall.

What is the Titanic Exhibition?

The Titanic Exhibition is an interactive experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the history of the Titanic.  This exhibition is on now through January 2023 and is currently being held in the Los Angeles area.

What will I find in the Titanic Exhibition?

You will find there is a lot to see during this experience.  Beginning with the ship’s construction, on to the ship in all it’s majestic beauty, details of the tragic event, and even information about deep sea expeditions.

Artifacts from Titanic and sister ships

The Titanic Exhibition has an abundant collection of artifacts relating to The Titanic and it’s sister ships in the cruise line.

Upon entering, there are plenty of printed brochures and ads for the coming of Titanic and its promise of beautiful cruises.

There is also a room filled with details about the plans and construction of the ship.

As you walk throughout the exhibit, you will find china from each class on the ship, along with furniture similar to what would have been on the Titanic.  With the exception of one cup and saucer that was noted as being walked off of The Titanic, all other china sets and furniture at the exhibit appeared to be from sister ships of the same era.

Even though not everything on display was from the ship itself, I appreciated being able to see what the items would have looked like on Titanic’s first and only sail.

Ship re-creations

Titanic Exhibition grand staircase

And the grand staircase?  Just trust me, it is something you want to see in person.  It looks just like the one you see in the movie.

You’ll also find displays of what the third class rooms looked like, as well as the boiler room that kept the ship in motion.

One of the most pleasant surprises was the starry night ship deck!  You don’t see it coming.  When you walk through, it is awe-inspiring.

Detailed timeline of the Tragic Event

This exhibit would not be complete if it did not address the tragic event and all of the details leading up to it.  I thought the exhibit did a lovely job of incorporating the beauty of the Titanic, along with the sad and avoidable tragedy that occurred.  I liked that there were displays of actual passengers along with snippets of their personal lives and whether they made it off the ship.

Something I found particularly chilling and can’t seem to stop thinking about is the room with the fake iceberg display.  There is a little hole inside with a large block of ice for you to touch.  It gives you a sense of what the passengers endured when they landed in the water.

Exploration Expedition room

Towards the end of the exhibit, there is a room that covers the deep sea diving expeditions that have taken place to learn more about The Titanic.  There you learn about the drones sent down and why they are required to take the place of humans.  A particularly nice touch is the glass floor with sand and broken china on the floor so that you get a sense of what it looks like on the sea floor surrounding The Titanic.

Movie memorabilia

Titanic Exhibition display of Titanic movie costumes.

If you have someone that is a big Titanic movie fan, these are some gifts they are sure to love (aside from attending this exhibition of course 😉

Heart of the Ocean Necklace

Titanic Movie Poster

Will my kid be ok to go?

All ages are welcome at the Titanic Exhibition.  However, I really do urge you to consider if any kids in your group will be sensitive to the content.  It really isn’t until the end that the exhibit turns a bit serious (as it should).  Do you think it would stress your kid out if you have a cruise in the near future?  Then maybe take that into consideration 😉

How long will the Titanic Exhibition be in Los Angeles?

The Titanic Exhibition is in Los Angeles now through January 14, 2023.

Titanic Exhibition parking

There is a parking lot at the back of the Titanic Exhibition building.  When we went, there was a person manning the gate to open and close to individuals visiting the exhibition.  Parking was free the day we went.

Titanic tourist submersible carrying 5 disappears on trip to see wreck in North Atlantic

An intensifying search-and-rescue mission was underway Monday after a submersible watercraft used for tourist expeditions to view the wreck of the Titanic went missing Sunday with five people aboard in the North Atlantic, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard said on Twitter that it was searching for a 21-foot submersible from the Canadian research vessel Polar Prince that lost contact about 900 miles east of Cape Cod, Mass. The vessel “submerged Sunday morning, and the crew of the Polar Prince lost contact with them approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into the vessel’s dive,” the Coast Guard wrote on Twitter.

A search-and-rescue mission is underway after a submersible used for tourist expeditions to view the Titanic wreck went missing in the North Atlantic.

One pilot or sub-commander operator and four mission specialists were on board, Coast Guard Rear Adm. John W. Mauger said in a Monday afternoon news conference. He declined to identify those on the missing vessel by name.

A C-130 aircraft is being used to conduct an aerial search both visually and with radar, according to Mauger. The Coast Guard has also coordinated with the Canadian coast guard and armed forces to deploy more assets. The Canadian coast guard also has committed a C-130 aircraft, as well as a submarine and sonar buoys to aid in the search.

Travel & Experiences

Why are we still so fascinated with the Titanic?

It could be the blockbuster film, the human angle or technology’s limits. Nowhere does it resonate more than in Halifax, Canada, where some of the victims are buried.

July 30, 2012

The missing vessel was designed with a 96-hour sustainment capability if there’s any emergency onboard. Mauger said officials “anticipate that there is somewhere between the 70 to full 96 hours.”

“We’re using that time, making the best use of every moment of that time to locate the vessel,” he said.

The location being searched is a “remote area” about 13,000 feet deep, making it a challenging search-and-rescue effort, he said.

The U.S. Coast Guard will continue to fly the aircraft and move additional vessels into the area over the next couple of days to help with the search.

The Guardian reported that the sub is operated by OceanGate Expeditions, a company that offers visits to the Titanic wreck .

OceanGate confirmed its vessel was missing and posted a statement on Twitter on Monday afternoon. “We are exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely,” the company said. “Our entire focus is on the crew members in the submersible and their families.”

pic.twitter.com/JmH8e47zuI — OceanGate Expeditions (@OceanGateExped) June 19, 2023

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax, Canada, received a call at 9:13 p.m. Sunday from the maritime rescue coordination center in Boston requesting “assistance for the search of the overdue research sub,” said Lt. Cmdr. Len Hickey. The sub had lost contact with its surface vessel, Hickey said.

Millvina Dean signs a "Titanic" movie poster at the Titanic Historical Society's convention in 1998.

World & Nation

Millvina Dean dies at 97; last Titanic survivor

She was about 2 months old when she sailed on the ocean liner in 1912. She, her mother and brother were saved. Her father was among those who went down with the ship.

Sept. 16, 2014

The center provided a fixed-wing aircraft and a Canadian coast guard vessel to aid in the search.

Hickey was unable to provide more information and referred additional questions to the Coast Guard‘s Boston base, which is leading the effort.

David Concannon, an advisor to the company, said OceanGate lost contact with the sub Sunday morning. In an email to the Associated Press on Monday afternoon, he said it had a 96-hour oxygen supply. Concannon was supposed to be on the dive but had other commitments. He said officials are working to get a remotely operated vehicle that can reach a depth of about 20,000 feet to the site as soon as possible.

The Titanic , which sank in 1912, is about 13,000 feet below the surface at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean nearly 400 nautical miles off the Newfoundland coast.

According to OceanGate’s website , which worked intermittently Monday, a deep-sea voyage to view the Titanic wreck was underway.

Representatives for the Coast Guard did not immediately return repeated requests for comment, nor did OceanGate Expeditions representatives.

The J. Dawson at Halifax’s Fairview Lawn Cemetry is not Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Titanic” character is fictional) but Titanic boiler-room worker Joseph.

Titanic: For many victims, their final resting place is in Halifax, Canada

Some disaster victims’ bodies pulled from the sea came to rest in Halifax, which honors the dead.

According to its website, OceanGate is a privately owned company in Everett, Wash., established in 2009, that operates a trio of five‑person submersibles for “site survey, scientific research, film production and exploration travel.” Its vessels can reach about 13,123 feet deep, the company said.

The company offers an eight-day, seven-night voyage to the Titanic wreck, according to its website. The trip runs about $250,000, according to the site.

“Become one of the few to see the Titanic with your own eyes,” the company says on its Titanic expeditions page.

The trip sets off from and returns to the city of St. John’s in Newfoundland, and takes “intrepid travelers” aboard a submersible called the Titan to explore the site of the Titanic wreck. Dive expeditions can begin as early as Day 3, according to the website. The Titan carries up to five people, the website said.

The website states no previous dive experience is necessary but details some physical requirements for passengers, including being able to board small boats in rough seas and sit for long periods of time. Explorers must also be at least 18, the website said.

Crew Tells of Historic Mission : Ship That Found Wreck of Titanic Returns Home

Not surprisingly, they called it Operation Titanic.

Sept. 10, 1985

Those embarking on the expedition receive a vessel orientation and safety briefing after boarding, the company said on its website.

Hamish Harding, the chairman of Action Aviation, a Dubai-based company dealing in aviation sales and acquisitions, is among those on the expedition, according to Harding’s social media posts and confirmed by Action Aviation.

The expedition left from St. Johns on Friday, Harding wrote on his Facebook page . A “weather window” had opened up, allowing for a dive to the wreck Sunday. It was likely to be the only “manned mission” this year because of the harsh winter, Harding wrote.

Action Aviation also posted on Twitter about the voyage .

“4am start this morning on the RMS Titanic Expedition Mission 5 with @oceangateexped,” Action Aviation wrote on Twitter on June 18. “The sub had a successful launch and Hamish is currently diving. Stay tuned for further updates!”

Harding wrote on Instagram that the team on the sub has “legendary explorers,” including Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a veteran and accomplished diver with more than 30 trips to the wreck site .

The Titanic was a British luxury liner that made its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912, bound for New York with 2,227 passengers and crew aboard. But the vessel, then the largest in the world, rammed an iceberg and sank in the early morning hours of April 15, killing more than 1,500 people .

In September 1985, an American and French team of researchers found the liner thousands of feet down.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
