Ghana - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Ghana, an attractive destination for beach getaways

Ghana (meaning “Warrior King”) is located in Western Africa, a region which is known for being accommodating towards travelers. Kokrobite offers some of the most excellent beaches the nation has. The Kakum National Park is also a delightful place to experience the lush nature of Ghana. Typically, foreigners and tourists can expect the people of Ghana to be friendly toward those unacquainted with their way of life. A holiday in Ghana means there is a lot to do and see.

Travel Highlights

  • Accra, the Capital of Ghana, is great for Western travelers as English is the city's primary language.
  • Take a safari while enjoying the savannah in Mole National Park.
  • Relax at the some of the most beautiful beaches in Cape Coast. Sipping a cocktail under a palm tree here isn't a bad idea.
  • Visit the Elmina Castle that was originally a center for Portuguese trade. Dating back to 1482, the castle now serves as a major tourism draw in the Elmina economy.

Travel Tips

  • Try some local eats. Ghana offers exciting cuisine, and some of the street food like chicken and Jollof fried rice is delicious.
  • Ghana is one of the safest countries in Africa. However, the country is not exactly welcoming towards LGBTIQ community.
  • Malaria in Ghana is widespread. Therefore, bring a mosquito repellents before travelling to Ghana. You may also want to check in with your doctor with regards to any necessary vaccinations before your trip- Yellow Fever vaccinations, for example, are required.
  • Remember that not all restaurants are operating under common western standards of health. And the ones that do typically cost a pretty penny compared to the “chop shops” often seen on the streets.
  • Be careful what you do with your left hand. Every culture has its customs, and in Ghana doing things such as eating with your left hand is considered impolite and improper.

Ghana has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Ghana before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Ghana, do check out our Ghana Travel Guide for more information.

The Best Time to Visit

The country's equatorial climate shapes its seasons, offering varied opportunities for visitors throughout the year. Here's what to consider while planning your Ghana vacations.

Dry Season (November to March)

The dry season, with its sunny days and cooler nights, is ideal for wildlife viewing, especially in the northern parks like Mole National Park. It's also a great time for cultural events and festivals without the interruption of rain.

Ghana's coastal regions remain relatively warm and humid year-round, making any time good for a beach visit. However, the drier winter months offer clearer skies and balmy evenings by the Atlantic.

Things to Know

Before embarking on your vacation to Ghana, it’s essential to arm yourself with practical knowledge to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Health Precautions

Vaccinations may be required, with Yellow Fever being mandatory. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended, alongside standard travel vaccines. Always consult with a travel health clinic before departure.

English is the official language, facilitating communication. However, learning a few phrases in local languages like Twi can enhance your interaction with locals.

Safety and Security

Ghana is known for being one of the safest countries in Africa. However, standard safety precautions apply, especially in busy markets or isolated areas.

Sustainable Travel

Be a responsible traveller by supporting local economies, respecting wildlife and natural habitats, and reducing plastic usage.

Food & Drink

The Staples

Palm nut soup, groundnut (peanut) soup, and light soup with chicken, fish, or goat are culinary mainstays, often accompanied by rice or the aforementioned staples. The use of spices and herbs provides depth and complexity to these dishes.

Being a coastal country, seafood is a significant part of the diet. Grilled tilapia and fried fish are common, often served with hot pepper sauce and banku. Inland, the Volta Lake offers fresh fish varieties that are a must-try.

Street Food

No Ghana vacation is complete without indulging in street food. From kebabs known as chichinga to waakye (rice and beans), the streets are a testament to Ghana's rich culinary diversity.

Sweet tooths can rejoice in treats like kelewele (spicy fried plantains) or the beloved red-red (bean stew served with fried plantains).

Culture and customs.

Ghana is home to over 70 ethnic groups, the largest being the Akan (who make up about 45 per cent of the population), Ewe, Mole-Dagbane, Guan, Ga-Adangbe and Gruma. While English is the official language and lingua franca, two types of Pidgin English are spoken, along with over 80 other indigenous languages, reflecting the country’s rich cultural diversity.

Most Ghanaians identify as Christians or Muslims, with a smaller percentage practicing indigenous religions. Regardless of faith, Ghanaian society is deeply rooted in traditional values, including family, community and respect for elders.

Families often live in intergenerational households, and it’s common for older people to be called ‘aunty’ or ‘uncle.’ An individual’s behaviour reflects on their wider family, so there’s also a strong emphasis on being respectful and dignified to save face.

Festivals, music and dance are all central to Ghanaian culture. Traditional music featuring drums, xylophones, flutes and call-and-response style singing resonates across the country, as does the world-renowned highlife genre which was born in Ghana.

The vibrancy of Ghanaian culture is further expressed through Kente cloth which is worn on special occasions. Kente cloth originated in the Ashanti Empire and is made from handwoven silk and cotton fabric with bright colours and patterns with distinct meanings.

Geography and environment

Ghana is located on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa. It’s bordered by Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east and Cote d'Ivoire to the west. Situated just a few degrees north of the equator, it enjoys a year-round tropical climate with a distinct wet and dry season.

The landscape of central Ghana consists of low-lying plains and forest-studded plateaus, while the coast features palm-studded beaches and lagoons, which are important for salt harvesting and fishing.

While not a go-to safari destination compared to its East African neighbours, Ghana’s national parks – including Mole and Kakum – are home to abundant wildlife including elephants, lions, hippos and baboons. The country also has a rich supply of gold and other minerals thanks to its location atop a two-billion-year-old craton (a stable section of the Earth’s crust).

More than 60 per cent of Ghana is dominated by a river basin that forms part of the mighty Volta River system which spans six countries in West Africa. The area is not only one of astounding natural beauty (picture: sprawling savannas, fertile farmlands, mangrove forests and waterfalls), but it’s also critical for the country’s water and food supply.

Lake Volta, created with the construction of Akosombo Dam over its namesake river, also generates hydroelectricity for Ghana and its neighbouring countries. It’s the world’s largest manmade lake covering 8502 sq kilometers – that’s just under the size of Puerto Rico.

History and government

Early history.

Before being colonised by the British in the 19th century, Ghana was ruled by powerful kingdoms – one of the most prominent being the Ashanti Kingdom in the 1700s. The Ashanti Kingdom was known for its strong economy, military prowess and wealth from gold and other minerals. During this period, Ghana was also a major part of the transatlantic slave trade, and the Ashanti Kingdom eventually fell after several conflicts with the British. The Cape Coast Castle is a sobering legacy of the perilous conditions enslaved people faced before being transported to the Americas.

Recent history

In 1957, under Kwame Nkrumah’s leadership, Ghana was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from European colonial rule. The country was also renamed from Gold Coast to Ghana (meaning ‘Warrior King’ in the Soninke language) to honour the ancient Ghana Empire. Ghana's independence became a symbol of anti-colonialism and sparked other liberation movements across the continent.

Between the 60s and 80s, Ghana experienced various economic challenges and periods of political instability that led to military coups and short-lived governments. A series of reforms under Jerry Rawlings’ leadership in the early 1980s stabilized the economy, and since the 1990s, Ghana has been one of the most stable democracies in Africa. Despite corruption and infrastructure development challenges, Ghana has seen significant economic growth, largely driven by its abundant natural resources including cocoa, gold and oil.

Eating and drinking

With tropical weather and fertile farmlands, Ghana boasts a variety of fruit, legumes and vegetables. Thanks to its vast coastline, seafood is also abundant. When you join us on a Ghana trip, you'll have many opportunities to try the cuisine, whether it's sharing a home-cooked meal at a homestay or sampling popular street snacks at a market.

Here are some dishes and drinks to try in Ghana.

This staple can be found all over Ghana and West Africa. Consisting of pounded and boiled cassava or yam, mixed with mashed plantain, fufu is rolled into a ball as a spoon to scoop up soup or stew and then eaten. A tasty multi-tasker!

2. Jollof rice

Said to have originated in Senegal, this big pot of seasoned rice is one of Ghana's most flavoursome dishes. White rice is cooked in tomato paste, stock, onions, garlic, chili and other spices. It’s a hearty and affordable standalone dish, but it also goes great with fried plantain or a protein of your choice.

3. Kelewele

This dish of fried plantains spiced with cayenne pepper, chili powder, nutmeg and cloves is a popular snack sold by market and street vendors. Eat it alone to curb your afternoon hunger or enjoy it as a side with stew or rice.

This staple dish popular throughout West Africa is made by fermenting ground maize, rolling it into dumplings, then cooking it in banana leaves or foil. Kenkey can be served alongside hot sauce, gravy and fried fish.

5. Kyinkyinga

This West African version of the kebab is a true street food favourite. Featuring seasoned meat (usually beef) with onions, capsicum, tomatoes, garlic and chili, it’s then topped with a delicious peanut sauce and served with rice, salad and bread.

There’s a good chance sobolo will be your new favourite soft drink. It’s made from dried hibiscus petals steeped in hot water and mixed with palm sugar, ginger, cloves, selim and pineapple. Chilli and peppercorns can also be added for an extra kick. Enjoy it hot in the morning or with ice on a muggy afternoon.

This refreshing corn drink is made by boiling sprouted corn kernels and mixing them with caramelised sugar syrup. It’s served cold with ice and milk.

7 of the best places to visit in Ghana

With wonderful beaches, traditional culture and amazing food, experience the best of Ghana with these top places to visit © Gerhard Pettersson / Shutterstock

With stunning beaches, rich culture and vibrant cities, plus a stable democracy and tourism-friendly infrastructure, the West African country of Ghana is one of the most interesting and accessible destinations on the continent – it's even been called "Africa for beginners."

Situated between Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso, this hot spot has a colorful traditional heritage to explore – largely through spicy food, bright African art and historical colonial sights. Accra is the capital and the country's cosmopolitan hub, but there are sights to see outside the city limits as well, all easy to reach with great attractions.

Experience the best of Ghana with these top places to visit.

1. Accra is best place to go for Ghanaian art, food and nightlife

Ghana’s capital is an open door to the country’s culture –  a gateway to Ghanaian, art, food and nightlife . Choose from elegant nightspots such as the rooftop Skybar25 or the stylish Bistro 22 , tailored to tourists, expats and diasporas that can afford the high prices, and eateries offering a more down-to-earth taste of Ghanian cuisine , such as  Auntie Muni Waakye and Bush Canteen, which serve local favorites like jollof rice, made with tomato sauce and spices, and waakye , a black-eyed-pea dish.

In the galleries, you’ll find images of Ghanaian social life from up-and-comers such as Kwesi Botchway and Afia Prempeh, and internationally recognized artists including Serge Clottey and Betty Acquah. Pieces from Ghanaian and African artists as a whole are captured inside showrooms across the city – contemporary art at Gallery 1957, older African works at Berj Gallery and rotating visual-art installations at the Nubuke Foundation, to name just a few.

2. Tamale has arts and crafts and Islamic architecture

Tamale is the northern capital of Ghana, and it has a great blend of architecture both old and new, from modern high-rises to buildings dating as far back as 150 years.

One highlight is the Tamale Central Mosque – it has the capacity for thousands of Muslim worshipers, hundreds of whom visit in droves for daily prayers. The mosque is located right in the center of the city, standing out with its green-topped minaret; a step inside reveals a range of multicolored patterned mats gracefully lining the floor, ready for prayer.

Tamale is also known for its arts and crafts. To pick up unique souvenirs or simply browse the wares, visit the National Cultural Centre , where you’ll find items like jewelry, drums and handmade baskets intricately woven from grass, straw and bamboo.

Detour:  Another example of impressive architecture is the Larabanga mosque, located about 116km (72 miles) west of Tamale. Dating back to 1421, it’s recognized as one of West Africa’s oldest mosques, built in a Sudano-Sahelian style using mud and reeds, with tall white walls and towers that curve inward. It's a good photo op – most tourists capture the mosque’s iconic architecture from the outside.

3. Kumasi is the best place to visit for Ashanti tradition and culture

Kumasi is the second-largest city in Ghana, and its people – known as Ashanti – have a cultural history and language that have remained dominant in the region for centuries. To learn more about this rich heritage, stop by Manhyia Palace .

Now a museum dedicated to the Ashanti monarchy and traditions, it was built in 1925 by the British colonial government for King Asantehene Agyeman Prempeh I after he returned from nearly three decades of exile in the Seychelles (though he refused to move in until the Ashanti had paid for the building themselves).

The palace would remain home to the monarchy for several generations, until Otumfuo Opoku Ware II relocated to a new residence in 1974. Two decades later, it was converted into a museum with exhibits displaying items from the royal family, such as wardresses, the customary regalia used during royal activities, and talking drums, which function as a communication device to celebrate and mourn during gatherings. Every pulse of the drum has a unique way of speaking to the Ashanti people.

Planning tip: Kumasi is home to numerous celebrations – time your visit just right to be part of one of them. The Akwasidae Festival occurs every sixth Sunday to honor past kings, invoking their blessings by calling upon their names.

Shadowy figures in the distant mist in a botanical garden dominated by huge trees

4. Aburi is best for families and green spaces

Located less than an hour’s drive from Accra, Aburi has fresh air in abundance, making it a perfect spot to escape the buzz of the capital and spend some time with nature. For a relaxing day trip, Aburi Botanic Gardens is particularly popular with families, who come to stroll alongside the towering palm trees and snap a picture to commemorate the occasion – posing by the palms is a signature move.

Featuring trees that arrived in the late 19th century from far-flung locales in Central America, Mexico, Malaysia, India and the Caribbean, as well as orchids, rock gardens and a children's park, the gardens also include 13 hectares (32 acres) of uncultivated land, kept in a wild state to maintain ecological balance. While you’re wandering the grounds, keep an eye out for an array of contributions planted by visiting dignitaries, such as the mahogany tree from Queen Elizabeth II in 1961 and the silver oak from Prince Charles in 1977.

5. Learn about colonial history at Cape Coast

Situated on the Atlantic Coast, Cape Coast was once a hub for the transatlantic slave trade, and Cape Coast Castle played a key role, housing enslaved people from the 16th to the 17th centuries.

First built by the Dutch and later captured by the British, the fort's whitewashed walls bely the dark history inside – as US President Barack Obama remarked when he visited in 2009, it’s a site that “reminds us of the capacity of human beings to commit great evil.”

Today it's on the Unesco World Heritage List, and guided tours take visitors into the dungeons and along the ramparts to explore this period of Ghana’s colonial history. The West African Historical Museum is located inside the castle and contains a significant collection of ceremonial drums and ancient pottery.

A local hiking on a lush trail on Mt Afadjato, Volta Region, Ghana

6. Head to the Volta Region for outdoor adventure

The Volta Region is home to Mt Afadjato, one of the tallest mountains in Ghana. A climb to the top takes about two-and-a-half hours and rewards hikers with incredible views of both Ghana and neighboring Togo to the east. Along with local flora, you can expect to see hippos, tortoises, lizards and butterflies.

The region is also home to a  monkey sanctuary  and myriad waterfalls, including West Africa’s highest, Wli Waterfalls, whose clean, gushing waters mark the border between Ghana and Togo. A 30-minute walk leads to the lower falls, and then it’s a longer climb to the upper falls; there are pools at the bases of both sets where you can take a cold dip, spotting monkeys in the surrounding trees and bats in the nearby cliffs.

Planning tip:  Stop at the Wli Tourist Office for a guide; you’re not allowed up to the falls without one.

7. Ada Foah is best for water sports

On the coast of southern Ghana, Ada Foah sits where the Volta River empties into the Atlantic Ocean – a remote stretch of real estate with long beaches and plentiful opportunities for water sports. Rent a speedboat to hop from beach to beach , or take your time and kayak along the palm-lined waterways for a slower-paced experience.

Places like Aqua Safari Resort capture the essence of Ada, with waterfalls, ponds and aquariums onsite and peacocks running free on the grounds. Check out Baffour Falls, where there are pelicans and a tortoise to be fed.

2024 “December in GH” launched, targets 1.3 million visitors

By Hafsa Obeng/Emelia Nkrumah

Accra, Aug. 28, GNA – The 2024 edition of the “December in GH” has been launched with the target of attracting over 1.3 million visitors into the country.

It was launched by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) under the auspices of the “Beyond the Return” steering committee and the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture (MoTAC).

The mandate of “December in GH” is to promote Ghana as a prime destination for the December holiday season.

Speaking at the launch in Accra, Mr Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Minister of Tourism Arts and Culture said “This year our target is 1.3 million visitors, which is almost 150, 000 people more than we got last year and with our relentless marketing efforts spearheaded by GTA we hope to achieve that.”

He said “December in GH” was a celebration of everything Ghanaian, explaining that it brings together Ghanaians, the diaspora, and global travelers to experience the vibrant traditions, music, dance, and cuisine.

Mr Mercer said the ministry remained resolutely committed to enhancing and promoting Ghana as a premier destination for international and local tourists alike adding that through initiatives like “December in GH,” “we cultivate a platform for cultural exchange, artistic expression, and economic growth.”

“Our goal is to create harmonious synergy among tourism, arts, and culture sectors, an alignment essential to delivering authentic Ghanaian experiences to the world,” he added.

According to him, since 2019, the tourism industry had witnessed a commendable trajectory of growth as tourist arrivals surged by nearly 45 per cent from the previous years’ figures, driven by the successful Year of Return campaign.

Mr Mercer said the upward trend underscored the importance of continuing to place Ghana on the global map as a nexus of cultural richness and hospitality.

“I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the steering committee whose tireless dedication has orchestrated yet another promising season.

Their diligence ensures that each edition not only meets but exceeds the high expectations we set for sharing the splendour of Ghana with the world,” he added.

Unveiling the events, Mr Akwasi Agyeman, CEO of GTA commended the efforts of the ‘Beyond the Return’ Secretariat and all other individuals who have partnered to make Ghana a global destination for the past few years.

“All events that are selected as part of the “December in GH” events are selected from a first call of entry which is done during the first quarter of each year and a second one around this period; they all undergo the necessary processes and deliberations by a steering committee to ensure that all events lined up on the calendar are successful and enjoyable for all people who attend.”

He encouraged Ghanaians to join in this year’s mission to give Ghana a global appeal and make all events lined up from sceneries and education through to night life and recreation a success.

Mr Daniel Asaah, Event Organiser, Little Havana said Ghana had gradually become the official holiday zone for Christmas across the world, saying “all these and more achievements and contributions are because our events contribute to attracting many from diverse backgrounds to visit the country and contribute massively to the Ghanaian economy.”

Mr Asaah urged government to contribute more to maintain peace and security before, during and after the election to ensure a smooth and peaceful “December in GH” celebration.

“This year is an election year and I would urged government to contribute more to maintain the peace and security we enjoy as a nation before, during and after the election so we can celebrate this year’s events in peace”.

Launched in 2019 as part of ‘The Year of Return,’ “December in GH” has become a cultural and tourism cornerstone.

Visitors from around the world eagerly immerse themselves in our heritage, arts, and entertainment scene.

This year’s events promise an extraordinary experience, allowing exploration of Ghana’s beauty while fostering connections with local communities throughout the festive season.

Analyzing the new flights & their competition, connections, virgin atlantic’s toronto flight.

  • Virgin Atlantic will launch new flights to Riyadh & Accra next summer to expand its network.
  • VS highlights the economic growth potential of Riyadh, VFR traffic, and cargo capacity as reasons for the new routes.
  • It has also planned strategic US connections for Riyadh, while for Accra it is focusing on diaspora but with limited connections.

Virgin Atlantic (VS) has announced that it will be launching flights to two destinations for this summer, notably Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) and Accra (Ghana). The service to the Saudi capital is a new flight, while the latter destination is a service resumption after more than a decade hiatus. Both flights will operate on a daily basis, with the airline highlighting the importance of connections from North America to fill its planes.

Virgin Atlantic

The service from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Riyadh Airport (RUH) will operate daily with an Airbus A330neo. The timings of the flight are listed below.

Photo Tour: Inside Virgin Atlantic's Airbus A330neo At The Farnborough International Airshow

Virgin Atlantic displayed its newest A330-900 at the show.

The carrier maintains, though, that the service is still subject to both government and slot approvals. Flights will begin on March 30, 2025 in time for the summer season. The reasons why VS decided to operate to the Saudi capital are threefold, according to its press release:

  • Economic: VS wants to capitalise on the growth expected through Saudi’s ambitious vision 2030 plan. Trade between the UK and Saudi is projected to become more pronounced as a result. Currently, these bilateral trade relations are worth £17.1 billion ($22.4 billion) a figure that is hoped to reach £30 billion ($39.3 billion) by 2030. Air travel between the UK and Saudi Arabia is “forecast to grow 24% between 2019-2035.”
  • Visiting friends and relatives: Aside from the business focus, VS says the market for visiting friends and relatives traffic between the two countries has seen a “fivefold increase in Saudis living in the UK between 2000 and 2018.”
  • Cargo: The aircraft will offer 30 tonnes of cargo capacity per flight allowing imports and exports to travel by plane.

Two airlines currently offer flights on the LHR to RUH sector. Cirium data shows that British Airways offers a daily service, with a grand total of 1645 seats per week. Saudia, on the other hand, also flies on the sector but does so double-daily, offering more than double the capacity. Its weekly seats total 4060 as it uses a Boeing 777-300ER which has more capacity than the British Airways 777-200ER on the same route.

In contrast to Riyadh, the LHR to Accra Kotoka International Airport (ACC) service is only subject to government approvals now, indicating that slots have already been secured. The flights will operate with a Boeing 787-9 once a day. The flight times are as follows.

Note the near four-hours spent on the ground in Accra, likely to account for the importance of connections on this service. By timing the return to London correctly, Virgin Atlantic can leverage its own network as well as that of its codeshare partners, to fill its new Accra flight. The carrier has listed several reasons for which it launched this route:

  • Competition: VS says there is a lack of choice of routes between the two countries. On this same sector for June 2025, Cirium data shows British Airways will operate daily, offering 2317 seats per week with an A350-1000.
  • Diaspora: In the same vein of VFR traffic, VS hopes to capitalise on the Ghanian population in the UK. The UK is home “to the third largest Ghanaian diaspora in the world”.
  • Cargo: Once again, cargo comes into play with the 787-9 offering around 30 tonnes of capacity for fresh produce and goods for delivery in the US or UK.

US connections

tour in ghana

To a much lesser extent, a similar situation will be observed on the Accra sector. VS says that around 10% of the carrier’s passengers “are also expected to connect through London onto Virgin Atlantic’s New York JFK service.”

Some, including route analyst Behramjee Ghadially, believe that the limited connections on offer for the Accra route will mean that it will “take some real effort and patience” for the route to be successful. It will nevertheless provide healthy competition against other airlines that offer one-stop connections between London and Accra.

This is the case for Brussels Airlines, for example, which leverages its Heathrow to Brussels route almost exclusively to facilitate connections and fill its Africa network and other medium/long haul services.

Cargo connections to and from the US are also going to be offered.

Saudia & Riyadh Air

The carrier also has an agreement with SkyTeam partner Saudia . This will allow it to offer additional connections from Riyadh, including to cities in Pakistan which constitutes a fairly significant market.

The cities on offer include Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Connections to Bangladesh and China will also be added to the agreement as “the airline continues to grow its strategic partnership with Saudia.”

Riyadh Air and VS also signed an agreement earlier today, laying the “foundations for a long-term relationship” which could include “codeshare connectivity, as well as a potential deeper partnership which could encompass loyalty benefits.”

Virgin Atlantic has been taking full advantage of its expansive network to facilitate new routes. It spans destinations primarily in North America to the west, and Asian cities in the East with a focus on India.

The airline’s new Toronto flight is also a testament to this strategy, with flights timed in order to facilitate connections to Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi. In a statement, Virgin Atlantic’s Chief Commercial Officer Juha Jarvinen said:

“Riyadh and Accra join Toronto as new routes for summer flying in 2025 and we see huge opportunities to connect friends, relatives and businesses with our new services. We’re also delighted to build on our codeshare with SkyTeam partner Saudia, further strengthening connectivity in the region, and beyond, and bringing new benefits to our loyal customers.

Get the latest aviation news and analysis right here.

We look forward to launching these new routes in 2025, introducing the iconic, inclusive Virgin Atlantic brand, award-winning experience and our amazing people to new customers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Ghana and Toronto.”
