From Denver to Vail: 5 Best Ways to Get There

The Bavarian-style mountain town of Vail is located just off I-70 just under 100 miles from Denver, and there are a number of ways to get between Colorado's capital city and this beloved ski town.
The Eagle County Regional Airport services Vail , but it is located in the town of Gypsum, about a 35-minute drive west. In winter, there are direct flights from some 14 cities on American Airlines, but in summer, these options drop to just Denver and Dallas, and only Denver has flights year-round.
Additionally, flights tend to be more expensive. Most travelers opt to fly into Denver International Airport and then make their way by land to Vail.
From Denver, it is just under a two-hour drive to Vail via I-70, depending on weather and traffic (the latter can be heavy on weekends during ski season). Note that winter driving conditions between Denver and Vail can be intense. Snow usually starts falling in the area in November, and major storms can be expected through April.
When winter weather hits, you can expect to encounter whiteout conditions and very slippery roads, especially on the mountain passes. I-70 may also shut down due to accidents or blizzard conditions. See the Denver to Vail by Car section for more on winter driving.
If you don't want to drive yourself (and really there is no reason to do this if you are just staying in Vail, as public transport takes you everywhere, and parking is pricey) you can book a shuttle or private car service, or even hop on public transport from the Mile High City.
Really, how you cross the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains separating Denver from Vail will depend on your budget and travel priorities. But if you enjoy checking out stunning scenery on road trips, we recommend making the journey by land.

1. From Denver to Vail by Private Limo Transfer
For VIP, door-to-door service, skip the rental car and book a Private Limo Transfer from Denver International Airport directly to your hotel in Vail. These transfers keep your stress level at a minimum since they'll meet you inside the airport terminal, assist you with getting your bags to the vehicle, and then take you up to the mountains in a stylish luxury SUV or limo. You also won't have to share the drive with anyone outside your group, and you'll be able to play music over bluetooth along the way.
All the drivers are Colorado residents, and passengers are encouraged to ask them questions about the area. You'll also have a selection of drinks and snacks for the ride. If you need to stop for a bathroom break, just ask.
2. From Denver to Vail by Shuttle
Another choice, if you don't want to drive yourself but don't want to splurge for a private service, is to take the shuttle transfer offered by Epic Mountain Express . The company does multiple daily transfers in small vans between DIA and most Vail area hotels and resorts. These shuttles can seat up to 10 people and depart frequently in both directions.
The trip takes just over two hours . The vans are comfy but, depending on your drop-off order, tend to take a bit longer than the private vehicle transfers where only your party is riding.
3. From Denver to Vail by Car
Parking in Vail is expensive, and unless you are staying in one of the outlying towns like Edwards or Eagle, driving yourself to Vail may actually be less convenient and more pricy than taking one of the shuttle options mentioned above.
This is because Vail Village itself is car-free, so you'll have to park in a lot or at your hotel. There is also a free public transport system, with buses that run frequently between East and West Vail, Vail Village, and Lionshead, which are where most of the accommodation and dining options are located and where you'll find the ski lifts.
If you are staying in one of the outlying towns, however, or you want to explore outside of Vail, then driving a car makes sense, and it is quite easy.
Rental cars can be obtained at Denver International Airport or from various outlets around the city center, depending on your starting point. The drive is around 100 miles and a direct shot on I-70 westbound - you can see Vail on the left side of the highway coming over Vail Pass. It takes less than two hours unless you run into weather or traffic conditions.
Note that if you are traveling on I-70 during the weekends in ski season you are likely to encounter significant traffic. This stretch is home to some of the best ski resorts in Colorado . There is an option for a toll lane that moves slightly faster for portions of the drive.
It is important to know when renting a car in winter that Colorado has strict winter driving traction laws. These go into effect when it snows heavily, and when they are in effect, you will only be able to drive a car that is equipped with either 4WD or all-wheel drive or winter driving tires or, in some cases, both. Attempting to drive without is both dangerous and illegal – the fines are high if you get caught.
By comparison, summer driving conditions between Denver and Vail are much more pleasant. Although traffic can quickly pile up on weekends, days are usually sunny. But always be prepared for the unexpected – quick snow squalls are not unheard of on Vail Pass in July and August.
4. From Denver to Vail by Bus
The cheapest way to get between Denver and Vail is to take public transportation utilizing the Colorado Department of Transportation's Bustang system. This option costs just $17 each way.
From Union Station in downtown Denver, you will take the CDOT West Line bus (departs twice daily at 7am and 5.40pm) west to the Vail Transportation Center. The trip takes just 2.5 hours . From here, you can walk or catch the free Vail bus to a stop near your hotel. If you are staying farther out, you may have to book an Uber or Lyft to your hotel or resort from the bus stop.
5. From Denver to Vail by Air
You can also fly between Denver International Airport (DIA) and Eagle Country Regional Airport, which is about 35 minutes west of Vail. There are direct flights on American Airlines . In winter, these direct flights operate between Eagle and 14 different cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Chicago, Miami, and New York.
In summer, however, there are only direct flights between Eagle-Vail and Dallas, and in the fall and spring swing seasons, American drops the flight options to just Denver (although you can connect through Denver from nearly anywhere).

Advantages of buses and shuttles over other types of public transport to get Denver to Vail:
- Usually the cheapest option. Travel by bus is either comparable to other group modes of transport (for example, with the train), or 5-15% cheaper than any alternative.
- A trip to a stop, from where it is easy to get to the right place. And in the case of the tourist shuttle, perhaps even to the hotel. Regular buses from major transport hubs leave for the most popular destinations and pass through the central districts of the surrounding cities and resort areas. For example, from the stop where the bus will take the tourist from the airport, it will be possible to get to any desired place with a maximum of one more change.
- Mini-excursion during the road. The bus travels slowly and with stops. Some tourist buses and shuttles have attendants who brighten up the trip by talking about the sights.

In this flight we had selected seating for our family in the middle of the plane in a 2x2 format. The airline changed them to the very back row of the plane and split them to 3x1. Why pay for seats that allow seat selection if the airline will just move them to the worst seats in the plane?
Never happened, because of the first delayed flight I lost the connection and had to wait overnight and take two flights to reach my destination.
The plane was delayed ~ 40 minutes. Communication could have been better. The entertainment was poor. We were not offered headsets by the flight attendants. The arm rest pad did not work properly, thus, I could not select what I wanted to watch.
A/C wasn't working. Made the 1.25 hour flight seem like 4 hours! Even at altitude it didn't cool down.
See my previous comments. I was probably booked in business but was moved to economy
No water on the toilets, dirty sits. 4 hours delayed departure.
East Lounge in Denver was terrible. Turning away active military on orders? Really? Sad.
The flight was delayed, but other than that everything was fine.
Two hour flight delay, it was awful and loss of sleep.
No real agent onsite helping you for missing luggage there. Not like the other airline next to UA desk, they have staff attending in their desk assisting answer/helping luggage issue, even after midnight.

Restaurants, food and drink, restaurants, food and drink | michelin-recommended denver restaurant plans second location in vail, tavernetta vail, known for its wine selection and pasta, will add breakfast to the menu.
Tavernetta Vail will take over the space occupied by Flame Restaurant, a steakhouse that shut down earlier this summer to make room for the multimillion-dollar renovation.
While the menu details haven’t yet been hammered out, Tavernetta Vail will have breakfast service, a first for the concept. The dinner menu will travel around Italy with its pastas, gnocchis and Tavernetta classics, as well as some dishes with mountain touches inspired by the country’s alpine regions that will feel at home in Colorado’s high country.
Like the original, Tavernetta Vail also will have an entirely Italian wine list, with the exception of Champagne — because “Italians drink more Champagne than anybody,” said master sommelier Bobby Stuckey, the co-founder of Frasca Hospitality Group, which Tavernetta falls under. Italian-driven spirits and digestifs will join the menu, too.
Last August, Michelin inspectors praised Tavernetta, placing it on the first edition of its Bib Gourmand list that recognizes restaurants where diners can indulge in a high-quality meal that also is considered a good value. “The Italian menu nods to more well-known dishes from multiple regions, and the plates are refreshingly uncluttered,” the famously anonymous inspectors said.
Tavernetta’s sister restaurant, Frasca in Boulder, is among the five Colorado restaurants that received a Michelin star in the state’s debut Michelin guide last September.
The expansion of Tavernetta into Vail makes sense since many of the Denver restaurant’s winter guests are in town for a night, enjoying a cozy meal before heading up Interstate 70 for ski vacations, said Stuckey, a James Beard Award winner who launched his Colorado career at the Little Nell in Aspen.
Stuckey said that lately, when he travels to some of the world’s greatest wine regions — from Burgundy to Barolo — he’s taken notice of how on-the-radar Vail has become.
“Vail has really become such an international ski city,” he told The Denver Post. “I think it’s a great place for Tavernetta.”
Jerome Arribas, the general manager of Four Seasons Resort Vail, said that after a day of adventure in the resort town, nothing sounds better than a delicious Italian meal.
“This blending of our two worlds is certain to bring la dolce vita style to Four Seasons Vail,” he said.
Tavernetta Vail follows the lead of other Four Seasons across the country that have partnered with high-profile local chefs and restaurant groups. James Beard Award winner and Minneapolis native Chef Gavin Kaysen opened a Mediterranean concept called Mara Restaurant & Bar at Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis. A New Orleans resident of 20 years, Alon Shaya (who is the chef-partner at Safta in Denver), opened Miss River, a Cajun restaurant, inside Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans.
In Vail, Tavernetta could be poised to attract some Michelin recognition, since the ski town is in the inspectors’ territory. But Arribas says he’s focused on bringing back the locals, who had stopped coming as frequently to the 14-year-old Flame Restaurant.
“Seeing the local community come in will be the best recognition,” he said.
Studio Collective, an award-winning design group in Venice, Calif., is reimagining the space, blending Italian ambiance with mountain coziness in the dining room, bar and lounge areas with booth seating that’s ideal for après-ski dining.
Tavernetta Vail is among a series of enhancements, including renovated suites, announced by Four Seasons Vail Resort. The luxury resort redesigned its spa and has a forthcoming enhanced Ski Concierge.
The forthcoming Tavernetta Vail, which is set to open in winter 2024, will join a bevy of new restaurants in Vail. Avanti, which has food halls in Denver and Boulder, is opening with five yet-to-be-announced restaurants in 2025 at Vail’s Golden Peak base area.
Here’s a look at three more new-to-Vail spots to check out:
Makoto : Esteemed Chef Makoto Okuwa opened his first Rocky Mountain concept inside the Grand Hyatt Vail. Makoto boasts a deep Japanese whisky list, sushi and sashimi, plus charcoal-grilled wagyu. 1300 Westhaven Drive, Vail; makoto-restaurant.com

Why is Denver Called the Mile High City?
Denver, Colorado , often referred to as the Mile High City , has a unique charm and a fascinating history. But why exactly does it have this nickname? Let's dive into the reasons behind this intriguing moniker.
The Elevation
Denver's elevation is the primary reason for its nickname. The city sits exactly one mile above sea level, which is 5,280 feet. This high altitude gives Denver its distinctive climate and breathtaking views.

Restaurants : Many local restaurants incorporate high-altitude cooking techniques, offering dishes that are both delicious and reflective of Denver's unique environment.
Sports Teams : Teams like the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Rockies play at high altitudes, which can be a challenge for visiting teams not used to the thinner air.
Denver's Unique Elevation
Denver's nickname, the Mile High City , comes from its unique elevation of exactly 5,280 feet above sea level. This height affects everything from the city's climate to its sports teams' performance. Visitors often notice the thinner air, which can make physical activities more challenging. The elevation also contributes to Denver's stunning views and outdoor activities, like hiking and skiing. Michelin-recommended Italian restaurant is opening its next Colorado location in Vail
Four seasons resort vail and frasca hospitality group announce partnership to open tavernetta vail.
News News | Aug 27, 2024
Vail Daily staff report
Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail and Frasca Hospitality Group are pleased to announce a new partnership to open Tavernetta Vail winter 2024.
“We couldn’t be happier to partner with Bobby and the Colorado-based Frasca Hospitality Group to bring the beloved Tavernetta brand to Vail,” said Jerome Arribas , general manager of Four Seasons Resort Vail. “This restaurant promises to set a new dining standard, enriching our destination with unforgettable experiences and a vibrant ambiance, while infusing a ‘la dolce vita’ style into the town of Vail.”
Like its namesake in Denver, Tavernetta Vail will offer a menu that explores the whole of Italy, capturing the rich flavors of the north and the vibrant tastes of the south, while honoring the mountain culture and diverse cuisine of the country’s Alpine regions. Tavernetta Vail will also offer an all-Italian wine list, as well as a full Champagne offering and an extensive Italian-driven spirits list and digestif program.
Tavernetta’s Denver location earned recognition last August when it landed in the first edition of the Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand list which recognizes restaurants where diners can indulge in a high-quality meal that also is considered a good value. Tavernetta’s sister restaurant, Frasca, in Boulder, earned a coveted Michelin star — one of only five Colorado restaurants to do so — last September when the Michelin guide debuted in Colorado.
“Four Seasons shares our commitment to hospitality excellence, and we are confident in the alignment of our organizations to deliver an unmatched culinary experience to this world-class resort and year-round destination,” said Bobby Stuckey , co-founder of Frasca Hospitality Group and master sommelier. “We look forward to working with the Four Seasons Vail team to execute our mutual vision and to welcoming new and returning guests to Vail this winter.”

Under the direction of Studio Collective, the award-winning Venice, California-based design group, and Denver-based OZ Architects, the space, previously held by Flame Restaurant, is undergoing a comprehensive renovation. Tavernetta Vail will have multiple indoor/outdoor spaces featuring a new bar and lounge as well as cozy booth seating ideal for après-ski dining or a morning bite before a day of adventuring. A renovated private dining room will anchor the farthest end of the restaurant and will be ideal for small meetings, family gatherings and milestone life events. Other furnishings incorporate delicate details to underscore considered craftsmanship, with nods to renowned Italian architect, Gio Ponti.
“We designed a modern space that complements the spectacular surrounding mountains by incorporating an abundance of natural materials and elegant details that pay homage to Vail’s heritage as a premier destination for elevated experiences, whether it be exceptional dining or world-class skiing,” said Christian Schulz , design director and partner at Studio Collective. “Together with the teams at Tavernetta and Four Seasons Vail, we are bringing this vision to life, seamlessly blending Italian allure with mountain coziness to create an inviting ambiance for an extraordinary dining experience.”
Tavernetta Vail is one of several enhancements to be announced at Four Seasons Resort Vail, joining a re-imagined Spa and comprehensive wellness program, renovated suites and a forthcoming enhanced Ski Concierge. Follow the progress of the restaurant on Instagram @ tavernettavail .
