All 9 Members Of Reacher's 110th Special Investigations Unit Explained

Star wars won't have a true success until the franchise addresses its biggest problem, adam sandler as homer simpson is the perfect live-action casting i'd never even considered.

  • Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher movies are now on Netflix, offering fans a different take on the character.
  • Reacher season 2 leaves viewers hungry for more adventures, with 27 novels in the series to explore.
  • Despite some limitations, Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher movies are a fun watch for fans of the franchise.

For viewers looking forward to Reacher season 3, a pair of Tom Cruise movies that just arrived on Netflix might be the perfect solution. 2022’s Reacher proved a huge success for Prime Video. Alan Ritchson embodied the hulking hero of Lee Childs’ novels perfectly and, although Reacher season 2 struggled to recapture the success of season 1, the series remained a popular guilty pleasure. Now, Reacher season 3 is one of the most hotly anticipated upcoming TV returns and viewers are understandably hungry for more from the super-smart, super-strong former Military Police officer and drifter.

Fortunately, Reacher ’s season 2 ending leaves viewers with plenty of other adventure to explore. There are no less than 27 novels in Childs’ Jack Reacher series, beginning in 1997 with The Killing Floor and ending with 2023’s The Secret . October 2024 will see the arrival of the next Jack Reacher book, In Too Deep , while there is also a collection of short stories starring the character by the same author. However, for viewers who prefer to stick with screens, there is another option. Netflix just acquired a pair of underrated action thrillers that star another take on the familiar character.

Reacher season 2 introduces Jack Reacher's former military team, the 110th Special Investigations Unit, composed of highly-skilled members.

Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher Movies Are Now Streaming On Netflix Ahead Of Prime Video Show’s Season 3 Release

Cruise’s reacher movies took a different approach to the antihero.

Tom Cruise’s two Jack Reacher movies, 2012’s Jack Reacher and 2016’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , recently arrived on Netflix. Cruise’s Jack Reacher movies aren’t as acclaimed as the Prime Video series, mainly because their star doesn’t fit the character’s description from the novels. Cruise’s Jack Reacher movies did some things better than the later series, but these positive elements were largely overshadowed by the reaction to the star’s miscasting. As such, Netflix viewers might be surprised to discover that Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher movies are pretty fun for fans of the franchise despite their limitations.

Based on 2005’s One Shot , Jack Reacher is the stronger of the two movies. Werner Herzog is an offbeat, unsettling villain, Robert Duvall offers a stellar supporting performance and Rosamund Pike is typically superb as the hero’s love interest. Cruise might not embody Reacher’s build, but he convinces as a razor-sharp soldier of fortune with a unique set of skills. Director Christopher McQuarrie went on to become famous for his later collaborations with Cruise in the Mission: Impossible series, and Jack Reacher boasts the same fast pace, sharp wit, and inventive action sequences as those sequels.

Which Books Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher Movies Are Based On (& Will Prime Video's Show Adapt Them?)

Prime video’s reacher show may never cover all reacher’s adventures.

While all of the Jack Reacher books have their ups and downs, One Shot works particularly well as a standalone adventure. However, the quality of the source material isn’t reflected in its adaptation. 2016’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was based on the 2013 novel of the same name but, although that book was partially well-reviewed, the sequel wasn’t as successful. Prime Video’s Reacher series has not yet adapted either of these novels and, with so many in the source series, it may never get around to them even after Reacher season 3’s ending.

Ryan vs. Reacher: Who Is The Better Jack?

Reacher: 8 things the series does better than the movies, a low-performing marvel movie unexpectedly leads netflix rankings, key takeaways.

  • Jack Reacher films starring Tom Cruise enjoy renewed success on Netflix, topping daily charts despite prior criticism.
  • Netflix highlights resurgence of overlooked B-movies like the Jack Reacher series, capturing large audiences globally.
  • Despite international overshadowing by SpongeBob, Tom Cruise's action films showcase streaming success without critical acclaim.

As speculation swirls around action star Tom Cruise's rumored stunt for the Paris Olympics closing ceremony, two of his critically panned action films have just landed on streaming and are taking Netflix by storm.

Netflix remains a major force in the streaming world with a stronghold on original content. Although the platform remains tight-lipped about detailed viewership data, it occasionally highlights big successes and features a daily top 10 list, offering a glimpse into what’s trending. While this list often features the platform’s heavily promoted high-profile originals, the resurgence of overlooked B-movies is truly intriguing. These films, typically starring recognizable actors and having had mediocre box office runs, are finding a surprising second life on Netflix, reaching audiences larger than they originally attracted. This trend is evident in two Tom Cruise films that recently joined the Netflix lineup.

After several film adaptations, Jack Reacher and Jack Ryan are tough guys who each have their own hit Amazon TV series. But which Jack is better?

Two Tom Cruise movies have recently made a big splash on Netflix, swiftly capturing the platform's attention. The Jack Reacher films, Jack Reacher and its sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , the first of which was directed by Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie , were introduced to Netflix's catalog at the beginning of August, bringing the popular paramount action titles to the streaming giant. The response was immediate, with both films quickly climbing to the top of Netflix's movie charts. Although the two Jack Reacher films starring Cruise as the titular character have long been a topic of debate among fans of Lee Child's bestselling novels, this hasn’t stopped them from attracting a significant streaming audience. Now, eight years after the theatrical release of the second movie, both Jack Reacher films are enjoying a resurgence on Netflix and appear poised to achieve even greater success, marking a triumphant debut for the franchise on the platform.

As of August 5th, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back secured the top spot on Netflix's daily Top 10 Movies list. The movie continues to dominate the charts, with the first Jack Reacher film featuring Tom Cruise’s debut as the titular character trailing close behind in fifth place. Although neither movie fully satisfied fans of Lee Child’s mercenary character at the time of their release, Cruise’s global appeal contributed to their moderate financial success. In the past two years, however, fans of the Reacher novels have praised Alan Ritchson’s Reacher series on Prime Video for correcting many of the shortcomings of the original movies, leading to the assumption that interest in the films would dwindle. However, this assumption has been proven wrong as the films have found a resurgence on Netflix, similar to many other previously overlooked movies. While Tom Cruise’s star power undoubtedly plays a role in their renewed popularity, the success of Prime Video's highly regarded Reacher TV series has likely reignited interest in the original films. Whether fans of the new series are curious about Cruise's portrayal of the character is uncertain, but it’s clear that the films' return to the spotlight is being met with approval, regardless of the reasons behind it.

While Tom Cruise's two Jack Reacher films are making waves on Netflix in the U.S., they haven't had the same impact internationally. Despite significant viewership stateside, they’ve been overshadowed worldwide by SpongeBob SquarePants in an electric comeback in the eagerly anticipated spin-off, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie , which pairs the beloved SpongeBob with Sandy Cheeks. This film has dominated the global Netflix chart since its release, particularly capturing the attention of younger viewers over the summer break. It appears that even for Cruise, some missions are just too difficult. If anything, the streaming triumphs of both SpongeBob's latest adventure and Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher series on Netflix, much like Madame Web , reaffirm that a film doesn't have to be critically acclaimed to achieve streaming success. It simply needs to be available to viewers on a service they already subscribe to.

Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back are streaming on Netflix.

The Reacher series is enjoying its limelight, but how well does it compare to the Jack Reacher films that came before it?

Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher films—which preceded Alan Ritchson’s hit Reacher series—have lots of Netflix viewers tuning in.

The first two seasons of Ritchson’s Reacher have been a huge hit for Prime Video and Season 3 is on the way.

However, Tom Cruise first played the character in two feature films: 2012’s Jack Reacher and 2016’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back .

The first Jack Reacher movie was directed by Cruise’s longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, while Edward Zwick—who directed Cruise in The Last Samurai —took over the director’s duties on Jack Reacher: Never Go Back .

Both of Cruise’s Jack Reacher films were released on Netflix on August 1. As of Sunday, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is the No. 2 on the streaming service’s Top 10 most-watched movies in the U.S., while Jack Reacher is No. 7.

The Jack Reacher movies and Reacher series are, of course, based on select books in author Lee Child’s series of best-sellers. Cruise’s first Jack Reacher movie was based on Child’s One Shot from 2005, while Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is based on the 2013 book of the same name.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, how were cruise’s jack reacher movies received audiences and critics.

According to The Numbers , Jack Reacher earned $80 million domestically and $137.3 million internationally for a worldwide box office total of $217 million against a $60 million production budget before prints and advertising costs.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back didn’t fare as well, earning, per The Numbers, earning nearly $58.9 million domestically and $101.2 in international ticket sales for a worldwide tally of $159.9 million before P&A.

Jack Reacher —which co-stars Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo and Werner Herzog—earned a 64% “fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics, based on 185 reviews. RT viewers gave the film a 67% “fresh” Audience Score based on more than 100,000 ratings.

The RT Critics Consensus for the movie reads, “ Jack Reacher is an above-average crime thriller with a smoothly charismatic performance from Tom Cruise.”

RT critics weren’t nearly as enthusiastic about Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , giving the film a 38% “rotten” rating based on 245 reviews and an Audience Score of 42% “rotten” based on 25,000-plus ratings. The sequel co-stars Colbie Smulders, Aldis Hodge and Holt McCallany.

The Critics Consensus on RT reads, “Monotonously formulaic, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is one action thriller sequel whose title also serves as a warning.”

One person who is not critical of Cruise’s Jack Reacher movies is Alan Ritchson, who took over the role for the Reacher Prime Video series in 2022. No matter how many times his portrayal of Reacher is compared to Cruise’s, Ritchson said he never tires of

Being compared to the most legendary actor of all time? The last film star? I would never tire of being compared to somebody of his stature," Ritchson told MovieZine .

"Look, he did his thing, he brought a lot of eyes to this project that wouldn’t be here otherwise, I think,” Ritchson added. “There’s some great IP, the books are great, a lot of people have read them and enjoy the show because of them, but I think a lot of people enjoy the show because he made them aware of it."

Of course, the biggest difference between Cruise and Ritchson is their heights—Cruise is 5-foot-7 and Ritchson is 6-foot-3—which makes the latter closer to Reacher’s 6-foot-5 frame in Lee Child’s book series.

Ritchson, however, will be looking upward in Season 3 of Reacher when faces off against one of the story’s villains, Paulie (Oliver “The Dutch Giant” Richters), who is 7-foot-2.

Both of Cruise’s Jack Reacher movies are streaming on Netflix, while the first two seasons of Ritchson’s Reacher are streaming on Prime Video.

Tom Cruise is genuinely scary as a suave hitman in Michael Mann's slick crime thriller. Jamie Foxx plays a cab driver who unknowingly picks up Cruise's contract killer and agrees to drive him to various locations for a hefty sum. Foxx's Max Durocher soon discovers that the man he knows as Vincent is actually on a killing spree, murdering different targets at each stop.

Mann builds a tense back-and-forth between the two men, making them into worthy adversaries even though Vincent seems to have every advantage. Mann gives Los Angeles at night a gorgeous, otherworldly feel, the perfect backdrop for this battle between the sadistic and the noble.

Before "legacy sequels" were all the rage, Martin Scorsese directed this 25-years-later follow-up to 1961's The Hustler, with Paul Newman returning as pool shark Fast Eddie Felson. Eddie is older but not necessarily wiser, and his love for the game is rekindled when he spots hotshot young player Vincent Lauria (Tom Cruise).

Cruise and Newman have excellent chemistry as two control freaks who develop a wary respect but maintain their rivalry. Scorsese shoots the pool scenes with flair, bringing a dynamic excitement to the many games of nine-ball. The movie is a winning combination of Scorsese's cinematic creativity and the Hollywood charisma of its two stars.

Although it underwhelmed at the box office, Doug Liman's sci-fi action movie has proven worthy of its critical acclaim by building a dedicated following. Tom Cruise plays against his action-hero type as a whiny, self-serving military public affairs officer. He's thrown into the middle of a battle against aliens and finds himself in a time loop, returning to the same point every time he gets killed.

Emily Blunt plays the hardened battlefield sergeant who trains him to harness this unexpected ability. It's a clever, fast-paced, and playful take on a familiar sci-fi concept, with Cruise and Blunt making a perfect team of reluctant allies.

Edge of Tomorrow is available for digital purchase ($9.99+) and rental ($3.99) at Amazon , iTunes , Google Play , Vudu , and other digital outlets.

Author Anne Rice was initially outraged by the casting of Tom Cruise as her popular vampire character Lestat de Lioncourt, but she changed her mind completely after seeing Neil Jordan's film. Cruise may be an unlikely choice to play the decadent, narcissistic Lestat, but he captures the dark hedonism of Rice's vampires perfectly.

Brad Pitt matches him as Lestat's protégé Louis, and Kirsten Dunst gives one of the best-ever child performances as forever-young vampire Claudia. Jordan brings the eroticism and menace of Rice's vampires to life, telling a centuries-spanning story as narrated by Louis to a rapt reporter played by Christian Slater.

Jerry Maguire's catch phrases have been so extensively quoted and recycled that it's easy to forget this movie is more than just a collection of quips. It's a passionate, open-hearted romantic comedy from a master of the form, writer-director Cameron Crowe, and it features one of Tom Cruise's most purely likable performances.

He plays the title character, an idealistic sports agent who leaves his secure job to start his own firm with just one client, NFL wide receiver Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.). Jerry approaches negotiating with the same enthusiasm and honesty that he brings to his romance with single mother Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger).

Tom Cruise is only one part of writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson's sprawling, multi-character epic, but he may be the most memorable part. Cruise was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of chauvinistic motivational speaker Frank T.J. Mackey, who's long estranged from his father Earl (Jason Robards).

Frank's arc of reconciling his feelings about his father ties into the movie's overall theme of redemption and forgiveness, which plays out in multiple overlapping storylines. The stellar cast also includes Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and William H. Macy, but even among such amazing talent, Cruise stands out.

The Mission: Impossible movies have become an all-consuming project for Tom Cruise in recent years, and they remain one of the most satisfying blockbuster franchises in Hollywood. The series reached an apex with this fourth movie, directed by animation veteran Brad Bird.

Bird brings an animator's anything-goes approach to the movie's massive set pieces, including Cruise's Ethan Hunt climbing the side of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, still one of the greatest stunts ever captured onscreen. He also puts together a top-notch team to support Cruise, adding Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner as Ethan's fellow covert agents, and promoting Simon Pegg in what would become a key franchise role.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A sci-fi movie focused as much on creative design and heady ideas as it is on action, Oblivion stars Tom Cruise as one of the last people left on Earth, ostensibly guarding the last remnants of human civilization following a deadly alien invasion. Cruise's Jack Harper and his partner Victoria Olson (Andrea Riseborough) start to realize that something isn't right about their supposed mission to repair essential technology before joining the human race's migration into space.

Oblivion is full of plot twists that don't always make sense, but Cruise convincingly plays every emotional reaction. He pulls the audience along on this sleek, mind-bending future journey.

Oblivion is available for digital purchase ($11.99+) and rental ($3.99) at Amazon , iTunes , Google Play , Vudu , and other digital outlets.

Anyone who only knows Risky Business from the often-parodied moment of Tom Cruise dancing in his underwear may be surprised to discover an emotionally engaging and sometimes dark coming-of-age dramedy. It's a bit like a cross between Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Graduate, with Cruise as a recent high school graduate who finds a connection with a prostitute played by Rebecca De Mornay.

It features the requisite crazy parties and occasionally crass jokes of an '80s teen comedy, but that's balanced by a strong undercurrent of melancholy. Cruise captures the emptiness of a privileged teen staring into a predetermined future that he starts to realize may be meaningless.

Risky Business is streaming on Netflix ($9.99+ per month) and  HBO Max ($9.99+ per month).

Tom Cruise is probably not the first name that would come to mind to play a German officer during World War II, but the filmmakers behind Valkyrie pull it off. They cast Cruise and actors of various nationalities as the members of a secret German organization that conspired to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and nearly succeeded.

Set in the waning days of the war, Valkyrie generates plenty of suspense, even though anyone watching almost certainly already knows the outcome. It's a fascinating history lesson, a taut thriller, and a true ensemble piece. Cruise plays the man in charge of the plan, but he makes room for the likes of Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Kenneth Branagh, all working toward the same goal.

Valkyrie is available for digital purchase ($12.99+) and rental ($3.99) at Amazon , iTunes , Google Play , Vudu , and other digital outlets.

Netflix Is Adding So Many Tom Cruise Movies in October

Starting on Oct. 1, the Netflix catalog has six more Tom Cruise in it, including the first four 'Mission: Impossible' movies.

By Michael Hein - October 1, 2023 01:35 pm EDT

October will be a great month for Netflix subscribers who are big fans of Tom Cruise . Netflix is adding four of Cruises's Mission: Impossible movies to the catalog this month as well as the 1993 thriller The Firm and the 2005 adaptation of War of the Worlds . Those trying to plan a binge watch will have plenty to work with.

Netflix announces the movies and TV shows it is adding to its catalog on a monthly basis these days along with the titles that are leaving. It's common for big batches of media from particular studios to come and go as licensing deals begin and end, but rarely is a single actor represented so strongly in one monthly turnover. It's moments like these that explain why some critics view Cruise as the last " true movie star " Hollywood has these days.

The Mission: Impossible franchise might be the work Cruise is best known for, but if you want to watch these movies chronologically, start with The Firm . The movie was adapted from a novel by John Grisham and directed by Sydney Pollack, and it starred Cruise as an idealistic young lawyer taking his first job out of law school. He soon finds himself embroiled in a criminal conspiracy and unsure how to do the right thing for his family.

The movie has an all-star cast aside from Cruise, including Jeane Tripplehorn, Gene Hackman, Holly Hunter and Ed Harris, among others. It was a commercial and critical success in its time, and it even inspired a TV series that ran on NBC in 2012, though it only got one season. The original movie is streaming now on Netflix.

Netflix also just added War of the Worlds – a 2005 adaptation of the 1898 novel by H.G. Wells. This was the second film adaptation of the book, and it was directed by Steven Spielberg. While it was a blockbuster success, it wasn't quite as beloved as some of Cruise's other work – particularly in hindsight as critics look back on the media of the early-aughts. Still, many fans will likely get a good movie night out of it now that it is on Netflix.

Finally, Netflix added the first four Mission: Impossible movies on Sunday – Mission: Impossible, Mission: Impossible 2, Mission: Impossible III and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol . Those movies cover a decade and a half of Cruise's career, as they were released in 1996, 2000, 2006 and 2011 respectively. They can also get fans more than halfway through a binge-watch of the franchise, with only three more movies to find after that. This will come in handy with the next installment, Mission: Impossible – Read Reckoning Part Two coming to theaters on June 28, 2024.

Best Tom Cruise Movies Dominating on Netflix

cruise movies on netflix

For Tom Cruise, age is simply a number; he is 58 years old and the only actor of his generation to date. When someone talks about Tom Cruise movies, the first thing that comes to mind is his action-packed blockbusters with never-before-seen devices and tools.

His outlandish flicks are always entertaining to watch, with him doing larger-than-life stunts and action sequences. He is a well-known and well-liked actor, and his films are available in all formats and platforms.

Tom Cruise has been one of the world’s biggest movie stars for nearly 35 years. Yet, despite demonstrating such amazing staying power and durability to remain at the peak of his industry for so long, the small actor rarely makes sequels to his most successful endeavors. Except for Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and next year’s Top Gun: Maverick, the only part that the 58-year-old has ever performed more than once is Mission: Impossible’s Ethan Hunt.

We combed through Netflix to find all of Tom Cruise’s movies, so you can add them to your watchlist if you haven’t already.

Find the best of Tom Cruise movies on Netflix here.

1. mission impossible- all parts.

The 5 Par film series has become a household name thanks to its characteristic music, which virtually everyone has heard. We shouldn’t even bring it up since the MI franchise is the largest and most well-known of all Tom Cruise films. Ethan Hunt, an American spy for the IMF (Impossible Task Force), is always prepared for the mission, should he choose to accept it. With his task force by his side at all times, Ethan vows to safeguard his company and the country at all costs.

The MI series has grown to six installments, with a seventh on the way, with a total box office income of more than $3 billion to far.

Max soon understands, however, that Vincent is no ordinary man; he is an assassin, and Max is transporting him around on his lethal killing assignments. What can he do to stop it from speeding up?

3. War of the Worlds

war of the worlds

This film is solely about alien invasions and the fight to defend the world. In this film, Tom Cruise plays the part of a father who is just trying to arrange a weekend with his children when he is interrupted by an extraterrestrial invasion that threatens his and everyone else’s lives. How will he protect himself and his children from the bloodthirsty aliens that have come on Earth?

4. Jack Reacher

jack reacher

Jack Reacher is the movie that appears to be something you’ve seen a million times before, and in many ways is precisely what you were anticipating, but is performed so well that it transcends familiarity to become something entirely unique. In this Lee Child adaptation, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie spins a fantastic narrative. If choosing Cruise as Reacher was a stroke of genius, casting Werner Herzog as the soulless monster was a close second. Cruise’s style in this role is so sure-footed and confident that you believe every move Reacher takes.

Still, this part differs from many of Cruise’s other action hero leads in that Reacher is not too cheerful. Whenever someone underestimates him or puts another person’s life at risk, you can sense his annoyance. This aspect of the character makes him so compelling and, ultimately, a memorable Tom Cruise part.

5. The Outsiders

outsiders, tom cruise

Director Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 adaption of The Outsiders notoriously had every beautiful young actor in Hollywood vying for a part, and the cast (for the most part) reads like a who’s who of future megastars. While Steve Randle plays a small role in the scope of the ensemble, Cruise accomplishes enough here to demonstrate that he’s in this thing called “showbiz” for the long haul. In terms of the picture itself, it’s a fantastic take on the coming-of-age genre with a West Side Story twist. The young actors who lead the cast do an excellent job conveying life as a hot-headed teen in the 1960s.

6. The Firm

the firm

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Cruise was almost pigeonholed as the stereotypical yuppie American businessman. Perhaps his most formulaic picture of the era was the 1993 John Grisham adaption of The Firm. While director Sydney Pollack’s handling of the Wicker Man-Esque tome is assured, and the plot is interesting to a point, the film is a little too long and tries to cover too much material.

A long-form method would have been more appropriate for this particular source material, and it’s not surprising that a TV series adaptation was attempted a few years ago. On the other hand, Cruise is fine; his chemistry with Gene Hackman is undeniably endearing, and the tale is never dull. But it’s a film that fades almost quickly once the titles roll. It’s the cinematic equivalent of a plane read—satisfying but disposable.

7. Edge of tomorrow

edge of tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow is a sci-fi actioner that is endlessly brilliant, entertaining, and, most importantly, original, making it a rare find. But the picture isn’t simply unique in terms of narrative or direction. Cruise plays a role unlike any he’s done before: an outright coward. It’s a fantastic variation on viewer expectations for a Tom Cruise blockbuster. It allows him to traverse a fascinating character arc from coward to hero. The film’s hidden weapon, however, is Emily Blunt. She imbues the film’s “female lead” character with all of the complexity and energy of its protagonist while avoiding traditional (and predictable) gender norms.

8. eyes wide shut .

eyes wide shut

Eyes Wide Shut is unquestionably one of the most intriguing films in Cruise’s career. The actor spent 400 days shooting Stanley Kubrick’s final picture. While the finished result was met with varied reactions, it’s tough to deny that it marked one of Cruise’s most daring character choices as a performer. The film offers a gripping depiction of infatuation and jealousy, with plenty of subtexts and psychological intrigue. Still, Dr. Bill’s rampant insecurity makes it all seem a little empty in the end. To be sure, the character’s sexual voyage is fascinating. Still, it’s difficult to sympathize with the person who’s outraged merely because his wife told him she had a fantasy about cheating on him with another man—i.e., she’s human.

cruise movies on netflix

Netflix seems to be really upping the ante when it comes to science fiction recently. Not only have we been treated to season 6 of Black Mirror , we've also had the Netflix Original They Cloned Tyrone , the 2016 epic Arrival and now a third brilliant movie is joining the line-up. Another reason it's one of the best streaming services .

Arriving on the 5th of September, Edge of Tomorrow (formerly known as Live.Die.Repeat) is one of the most fascinating movies in Tom Cruise's filmography. With a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score it also happens to be one of the most well recieved.

It might look like just a typical alien shooting flick but in Edge of Tomorrow, death isn't the end. Tom Cruise's Bill Cage finds himself in a timeloop, resetting every time he is killed by an alien 'Mimic' and waking up at... Heathrow Airport (has he not suffered enough!). Think Groundhog Day meets Saving Private Ryan with a hint of Independence Day thrown in. That's quite the cocktail.

Edge of Tomorrow

Unlike the Mission Impossible franchise where Cruise is essentially Superman, it's refreshing to see him play a character who starts the movie without any combat skills. It is only through training with Emily Blunt's Rita Vrataski that he gets his battlefield chops.

Cage's repeated attempts to triumph in the same battle give the film a real sense of a video game boss battle, in the best way, with him getting just a bit further each time. It is also surprisingly not deadly serious, (remember that Groundhog Day comparison?) with Cage's awkward attempts at flirting particularly funny.

Based on the Japanese novel All You Need is Kill, this is a genuinely unique take on the sci-fi blockbuster that you owe it to yourself to try. It also is one of the last few movies featuring the legendary Bill "Game over man!" Paxton. Talk of a sequel to the 2014 original has been rife recently and although not confirmed, Emily Blunt has been vocal in her support for a follow up. Fingers crossed.

  • Trivia At the insistence of Tom Cruise , minimal green screen and CGI aerial shots exist in the film, and even the close up cockpit shots were taken during real in-flight sequences. This meant that much of the cast had to undergo extensive G-force training sessions to withstand the physical demands of G-force pressures during flights.
  • Goofs At 1h12'10" Coyote is in G-LOC, releases the stick and his aircraft falls towards the ground. Rear Admiral : Maverick. Thirty-plus years of service. Combat medals. Citations. Only man to shoot down three enemy planes in the last 40 years.

[Cain looks through pages of Maverick's records]

Rear Admiral : 'Distinguished.' 'Distinguished.' 'Distinguished.' Yet you can't get a promotion, you won't retire, and, despite your best efforts, you refuse to die. You should be at least a two-star admiral by now, if not a senator. Yet here you are: Captain. Why is that?

Maverick : It's one of life's mysteries, sir.

Rear Admiral : This isn't a joke. I asked you a question.

Maverick : I'm where I belong, sir.

Rear Admiral : Well, the navy doesn't see it that way. Not anymore.

Rear Admiral : These planes you've been testing, Captain, one day, sooner or later, they won't need pilots at all. Pilots that need to sleep, eat, take a piss. Pilots that disobey orders. All you did was buy some time for those men out there. The future is coming, and you're not in it.

[Cain faces the officer by the door]

Rear Admiral : Escort this man off the base. Take him to his quarters. Wait with him while he packs his gear. I want him on the road to North Island within the hour.

[surprised look on Maverick's face]

Maverick : North Island, sir?

Rear Admiral : Call came in with impeccable timing, right as I was driving here to ground your ass once and for all. It galls me to say it, but... for reasons known only to the Almighty and your guardian angel, you've been called back to Top Gun.

Maverick : Sir?

Rear Admiral : You are dismissed, Captain.

[Maverick proceeds to leave Cain's office]

Rear Admiral : The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction.

[Maverick turns around]

Maverick : Maybe so, sir. But not today.

Miss cruising? Stream these 13 movies and shows to get your cruise ship fix

Gene Sloan

Are you a hardcore cruising fan? We wouldn't blame you for being a bit down. The complete shutdown of cruising since March due to the coronavirus pandemic is keeping you away from your favorite floating hideaways, and it doesn't look like you'll be back at sea anytime soon.

That said, you're not completely cut off from your favorite ships — you still can see them in movies and in television shows.

Since streaming movies and television programming is pretty much all we're doing these days (and we're guessing that's the case for you, too), we've put together this list of some our favorite onscreen entertainment that includes at least a glimpse of a cherished cruise vessel.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

In some cases, these movies and shows are available on streaming services such as Hulu (if you're not a subscriber, get a free trial ), Amazon Prime , fuboTV , Sling TV and FandangoNow . Others can be found on YouTube, iTunes, or at Redbox kiosks.

"Mighty Cruise Ships"

Available on: Hulu , YouTube , Amazon Prime , Smithsonian Channel

You'll get much more than a glimpse of your favorite cruise ship with this series. Each of the 18 episodes, which originally aired in 2014, 2017 and 2019 on Canada's Discovery Channel, focus on a single cruise vessel in fabulously minute detail, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how they run. Among the vessels featured in the series are Celebrity Solstice, Carnival Vista, Royal Caribbean 's Symphony of the Seas and MSC Divina. The series also includes ships operated by Viking, Star Clippers, Azamara and Ponant.

"Mighty Ships"

Available on: FandangoNow , Hulu , YouTube , Amazon Prime , iTunes, fuboTV , Smithsonian Channel

"Mighty Cruise Ships" was a spinoff of this series, which began airing in 2008 on Canada's Discovery Channel and has completed 10 seasons. While it generally focuses on commercial and military vessels, from the container ship Emma Maersk to the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, it also offers several wonderful episodes on cruise ships. Among the vessels profiled: Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas , Norwegian Breakaway, Wind Surf and MSC Meraviglia.

"Ocean Treks with Jeff Corwin"

Available on: ABC, Hulu , Ocean.com

Every episode of this 4-year-old travel series starring television personality Jeff Corwin will get you at least a peek at one the vessels under the Carnival Corp. umbrella of brands. The giant cruise company, which owns Carnival Cruise Line , Princess Cruises , Holland America and six other major lines, sponsors the series, which has been airing on Saturday mornings on ABC. It follows Corwin as he heads off ships in various port towns for a perfect day of adventure.

"The Voyager with Josh Garcia"

Available on: Hulu , Sling TV , fuboTV , Ocean.com

Image courtesy of The Voyager with Josh Garcia.

Like "Ocean Treks," this is a series sponsored by Carnival Corp. that's generously filled with cameos of the line's vessels and is all about things to do during port calls, but with less of a focus on adventure. The host, video journalist Josh Garcia, sets off from vessels for a day of off-the-beaten-path exploring. His goal: Meeting locals who can share their history, life stories and exotic foods. It originally aired on NBC from 2016 to 2019.

"Building the World's Most Luxurious Cruise Ship"

Available on: YouTube

This is can't-miss television for Regent Seven Seas Cruises fans. The two-part documentary chronicles the creation of the luxury line's Seven Seas Explorer, which was the most expensive luxury ship ever built at the time it debuted in 2016. Even today, only one ship -- Seven Seas Explorer's just-unveiled sister, Seven Seas Splendor -- rivals it in opulence. What we love about this documentary is the amazing behind-the-scenes access that Regent gave the filmmakers during the ship's construction. You see every little twist and turn in the making of a new icon of the seas.

"Jack and Jill"

Available on: FandangoNow , YouTube , Amazon Prime , Hulu , Google Play, iTunes, Vudu

Yes, we know: This is widely considered one of the all-time worst movies ever made. It only scored 3% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer! But, if you're a Royal Caribbean fan jonesing for a glimpse of one of the line's giant Oasis Class-vessels, there's simply no better movie. We won't even bother going into the inane plot of this 2011 comedy, which stars Adam Sandler (playing both a male and female role). Just fast-forward to the shipboard scenes, which were shot on board Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas.

"Speed 2: Cruise Control"

Available on: FandangoNow , YouTube , Amazon Prime , Google Play, iTunes, Vudu

This 1997 action flick starring Sandra Bullock got almost as bad reviews as Jack and Jill (which is a pity, as the original "Speed" is a classic). Still, we mention it because it was filmed on one of the great luxury ships of the past 30 years: The vessel now known as Star Legend. Star Legend sails for Windstar Cruises these days, but it originally debuted as the last new ship for legendary (and long-defunct) luxury operator Royal Viking Line. Back then, it was called Royal Viking Queen. By the time the film was made, it had moved to the Seabourn fleet, sailing as Seabourn Legend.

"Like Father"

Available on: Netflix

Another giant Royal Caribbean ship, Harmony of the Seas, is the star of this somewhat predictable "dramedy" from 2018, which stars Kelsey Grammer, Kristen Bell and Seth Rogen. The plot twist here is that Bell's character, left at the altar, ends up on her honeymoon cruise with her estranged father (Grammer), with resulting drama and hijinks. Royal Caribbean lovers can make it a game of spotting all the cool Harmony of the Seas features, from the ship's nine-deck-high zip line to the Rising Tide Bar. Scenes also were shot at Royal Caribbean's private beach retreat in Haiti.

"Cruising With Jane McDonald"

Former cruise ship entertainer Jane McDonald highlights a different river or ocean cruise every episode on this British television series, which ran from 2017 to this year (a new host will soon be taking over the show). Recent episodes have featured a wide range of vessels, including Oceania Cruises' Marina, Silversea's Silver Shadow and Princess' Sun Princess.

"Monster Ships"

Available on: FandangoNow , Hulu , YouTube, Amazon Prime , iTunes

Just in case "Mighty Ships" doesn't provide you with enough of a giant ship fix, the television world also offers the similarly named "Monster Ships" and, as its name suggests, the eight-part series from 2019 brings an up-close look at massive vessels of all kinds -- one per 42-minute episode. In addition to a gargantuan car carrier and a crazy-looking heavy lift vessel, the series (which aired on the Science Channel) includes two ships designed for cruising: Crown Princess and Royal Clipper.

"Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked"

Available on: FandangoNow , YouTube , Amazon Prime , iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, HBO Now

If you're even the least bit an "Alvin and the Chipmunks" fan, this is your cruise movie. The third installment of the live-action chipmunks series, which dates to 2011, is set on cruise giant Carnival's 3,646-passenger Carnival Dream. Or, at least, it is — until the chipmunks get blown away while flying a kite and end up on a deserted island. External shots and some interiors were filmed on the vessel. Some ship scenes, alas, were shot in a soundstage.

"Out to Sea"

Available on: FandangoNow , YouTube , Google Play, Vudu, Amazon Prime , HBO Now, Hulu

You can't go wrong with this Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau matchup, which involves the legendary comedic duo delivering their schtick as dance hosts on a cruise ship. Dating to 1997, it takes place on what's now the Marella Dream, a 1,132-passenger vessel in the fleet of British line Marella Cruises. Holland America fans will know this ship better as the old Westerdam (which was its name from 1988 to 2002). Just don't confuse it with the new Westerdam (Holland America likes to recycle names). It also sailed eight years for Costa Cruises.

"The Love Boat: Next Wave"

To make our list, a movie or television show had to feature a vessel still in service.

But we really can't do a story on cruise-related entertainment without at least mentioning "The Love Boat," which featured a Princess Cruises ship that's no longer in operation. While it doesn't offer a glimpse into a vessel you can book, this is, quite simply, the most iconic cruise ship show of all time. Indeed, many in the cruise industry credit the series, which ran from 1977 to 1987, for kicking off the great growth in cruising we've seen over the past four decades.

"The Love Boat" was set on the original Pacific Princess, which sailed for Princess from 1977 to 2002. But it was filmed not just on that ship, but also several others. If you want to see what all the fuss is about, you can find the show on MeTV stations on Sundays and on YouTube -- or buy the DVD box set of the first four seasons at Amazon.

Also, in 1988, the series was revived with a short-lived remake, "The Love Boat: Next Wave" — and it was filmed on the Sun Princess, which still sails. Unfortunately, it's not available on any major streaming platform. But, if you can find it, please sound off in the comments below and let us know where we can watch it, too.

Tom Cruise’s ‘Jack Reacher’ Movies Are Now Streaming On Netflix To Help Pass The Time Until ‘Reacher’ Season 3

Josh Kurp

Tom Cruise is one of the most well-cast actors in Hollywood history. It’s hard to imagine the Mission: Impossible franchise continuing once he’s decided he’s hung from his last airplane; he’s incredible as a misogynist motivational speaker in Magnolia ; and his villainous turn in Collateral deserved an Oscar. But one of the few exceptions to Cruise picking the right role is Jack Reacher . He was the wrong person — and the wrong height — to play the character in 2012’s Jack Reacher and in 2016’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back .

Even Lee Child, the author of the Jack Reacher book series, has said as much.

“Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality,” he shared in 2018 (Cruise is 5′ 7″; Reacher is 6′ 5″). “I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He’s a really, really nice guy… But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is. The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you’re all a little nervous just for that first minute. And Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality.”

That being said! The Reacher movies are pretty fun. If you’ve only seen Prime Video’s kick-ass Reacher series, starring height-appropriate Alan Ritchson, they’re worth a watch, especially since they’re now both streaming on Netflix.

You can watch Jack Reacher here and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back here . As for Reacher , season 3 (featuring the world’s tallest actor and bodybuilder ) will premiere on Prime Video in 2025.

Nearly a decade before Trump coined the term “Fake News,” Tom Cruise plays a morally corrupt senator making a presidential bid by planting a story through a journalist played by Meryl Streep. In the end, this pretentious and convoluted plot says very little about its moving parts.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Though the tagline warns to never go back, Cruise unfortunately did go back to play the titular Jack Reacher, in a sequel that plays out like dumb, less tech-savvy Mission: Impossible.

Tom Cruise and Mia Sara try to protect the last of the unicorns from Tim Curry, who is some sort of awesome devil muppet. It’s also the only straight-up fantasy movie Cruise has ever done—and it’s pretty obvious why.

Paramount+ Netflix

The worst of Cruise’s six Mission: Impossible movies, this one sees Ethan Hunt trying to stop a deadly weaponized virus that’s going to be released by terrorists. Unfortunately, director John Woo’s style didn’t quite fit with the international espionage of this franchise.

Jack Reacher

Movie,

In his first of two movies playing the titular former military police-officer-turned-vigilante-drifter, Cruise’s character tries to stop a military sniper on a killing spree. Of course, Cruise also did all his own driving stunts.

In his second-ever onscreen role, Cruise plays David Shawn, one of the military cadets who attempt to protect their academy from being torn down for local condo developers. Pretty low stakes as far as military dramas go.

War of the Worlds

Human, Jacket, Outerwear, Beard, Facial hair, Leather, Fictional character,

In this Steven Spielberg re-imagining of the H.G. Wells novel, Cruise plays a father attempting to keep his children safe throughout an alien invasion. Though it has all the highlights of a Spielbergian sci-fi, it wasn’t quite enough to cause riots like Orson Welles’s infamous radio broadcast.

The Last Samurai

A white savior complex brings down what is otherwise a well-acted period period piece about an American Civil War veteran sent to train a 19th century Japanese army.

Before he was put in charge of both Star Wars and Star Trek , J.J. Abrams’s big Hollywood blockbuster movie directorial debut was at the helm of Mission: Impossible III , which saw a retired Ethan Hunt brought back in the game to stop an excellent Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Cruise stars in this philosophical thriller as a man haunted by the specter of a former flame after becoming disfigured in a car crash. (Fun fact: Penelope Cruz plays the same character in this remake of her Spanish film, Abre los Ojos .)

NASCAR moved into the mainstream thanks to this movie in which Cruise plays a promising driver hoping to making it in the big leagues.

This 2017 Tom Cruise thriller is the most popular movie on Netflix. Here’s why you should watch it

As an aging movie star who is driven to entertain his audience, Tom Cruise has committed himself to more and more daring stunts with each movie he puts out. In each of these movies, Cruise seems to be playing a version of himself, a harried man who is also confident that he’s the only one who can keep it all going.

  • It’s a grounded crime thriller
  • It’s a morally murky movie

It lets Cruise do plenty of his own flying

There was a time, though, when Cruise was willing to deliver much more full-bodied performances in everything from Born on the Fourth of July  to  Magnolia . Even more recently, though, Cruise has found vehicles that allow him to give a more complete performance, and one of those movies is now trending on Netflix . American Made  was released in 2017, and its success on Netflix is suggestive of what the movie does well. Here are three reasons you should check it out:

It’s a grounded crime thriller

While most of Cruise’s recent movies paint him as a do-gooder,  American Made  casts him in the opposite light. Cruise stars as Barry White, a real-life TWA pilot who is recruited by the CIA to do reconnaissance for the agency in South America. Barry ultimately winds up leading a massive operation that gives birth to a new cartel and gets him on the wrong side of the law.

Cruise is not playing a good guy here. Instead, Barry is out to make as much money as possible, and then avoid the consequences of his actions. It’s a thoroughly compelling performance, in part because it’s so different from what he’d done to date.

It’s a morally murky movie

Although plenty of movies about the CIA offer a fairly rosy picture of what the agency did over the course of its history,  American Made  is unafraid to dive into the less savory aspects of the agency’s legacy.  American Made  takes place primarily during the Reagan administration and is honest about the questionable actions of the CIA.

The movie may be called  American Made , but that doesn’t mean its patriotic. In fact, it’s a movie about some of the worst things that have been done in the country’s name in recent years.

Cruise is famously someone who does his own stunts, but if you’re not an action person, it may come as a relief to learn that  American Made  isn’t really an action movie.

It does have plenty of real aerial photography, though, and that’s thanks in large part to the fact that Cruise is actually flying the planes through most of the movie.  American Made  is really just a sturdy drama, and it’s the kind of movie that rarely gets made anymore. That’s part of the reason it feels so special, and it’s what has turned the movie into such a success story on Netflix.

American Made is now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services in the world, with nearly 270 million subscribers. And just what do those people tend to watch? In particular, what is the most popular movie on Netflix? Each week, the streaming service releases a list of its 10 most-watched movies over a recent seven-day period to keep subscribers in the loop regarding its most popular titles.

Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry remain two of Hollywood's biggest personalities. The two veterans are the current stars of The Union, an action comedy that debuted at No. 1 this week. The Emoji Movie jumped to No. 2 in its second week, and Kevin Hart's Night School came in at No. 3. Below, we've listed the top 10 movies in the U.S. from August 12 to August 18, along with general information about each film, such as genre, rating, cast, and synopsis.

If there's one movie that Max subscribers are going to watch this month, it's probably going to be Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. After bombing in theaters, George Miller's prequel to Max Max: Fury Road is now streaming. But if action isn't what you need, perhaps the romance of Amelie and the comedy of Beetlejuice are what you're looking for this month. But for us, the one (HBO) Max movie that you need to watch in August 2024 is Where the Wild Things Are.

Maurice Sendak's children's book Where the Wild Things Are is such a perennial hit that chances are very good that you read it while growing up. And if you remember it at all, you should recall that it's very short. Director Spike Jonze, the man behind Being John Malkovich, co-wrote and helmed this adaptation, while also expanding and modernizing the story. There were definitely some detractors when Jonze signed on to this project, but he proved he was up to the task. Where the Wild Things Are is a wonderful movie for kids of all ages, and we're sharing the reasons why you should stream it this month. Max is presented as a real child

Tom Cruise's best sci-fi with 91% on Rotten Tomatoes leaves Netflix next week

T here's nothing quite like a good sci-fi action movie to cleanse the palette after a hard week's work. But you don't have long to catch one of Tom Cruise's best-ever offerings in the genre.

Cruise is the definition of a box-office banker, but even he occasionally has movies that don't get the success they deserve, and Edge of Tomorrow is a perfect example – beloved by critics and audiences now, it still didn't exactly nail it in theaters.

You can watch it on Netflix right now, though, but you don't have long to do so – it leaves Netflix in the US on 5 June, so the clock is ticking.

That probably wasn't helped by marketing that couldn't figure out what to call the movie even after it had already come to DVD – you might have seen it as Live, Die, Repeat elsewhere.

Still, it's a veritable banger that very much deserves its stunning 91% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes , with audiences in lockstep giving it a 90% score, too.

The movie casts Cruise against type, for once, as the initially unlikeable Major William Cage, a marketing expert for the US Army in a near-future war against horrifying alien invaders.

When he's called to active duty for the first time, he unwittingly gets stuck in a time loop, living through a disastrous human defeat over and over. Realising that Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt in fine form) seems to understand what's happening to him, he tries to enlist her to help him.

The movie tells a really fun, brisk and twisty time-bending story of finding the fine margins and making the best of yourself, and it has a whole heap of amazing action scenes that take advantage of the hulking exosuits that these future soldiers all wear.

It also looks great, and there's fun frantic direction from Doug Liman, who also helmed The Bourne Identity – so he knows a thing or two about shakycam.

Netflix would doubtless back itself as the best streaming service for action movie fans regardless, but this is a movie that we think it'll sorely miss once it's gone, so be sure to check it out while you can.

Jack Reacher

jack-reacher-tom-cruise

Before Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie made four “Mission: Impossible” movies together, their first collaboration as star and director was on the 2012 Lee Child adaptation “Jack Reacher.” This is a thrilling take on the Child book with Cruise nailing the intensity and moral compass of the title character as he navigates a mystery involving a mass shooting. A subpar sequel was made without McQuarrie as the director and the franchise was eventually rebooted on television with the very good Alan Ritchson, but this film remains a great one and a peek into an alternate reality in which Cruise and McQuarrie made four “Jack Reacher” movies instead.

Hit Man

This movie is an absolute blast. Inspired by a true story, “Hit Man” stars Glen Powell as a mild-mannered man who does contract work for the local police disguising himself as a hit man to catch people plotting murders on tape. But when he falls for one of his would-be criminals (a woman played by Adria Arjona), he finds himself caught between two identities — the “hit man” personality she fell in love with and the guy he really is. Richard Linklater, the award-winning filmmaker behind “School of Rock,” “Boyhood” and the “Before” series, directs with a keen eye for humanity in every character but packages the whole thing as a screwball comedy. Powell co-wrote the script and is dynamite in the lead role, showing off tremendous chemistry with Arjona.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn Wang in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (Photo credit: A24)

One of the wildest Best Picture Oscar-winners in recent memory, A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is a multiverse family drama starring Michelle Yeoh as a woman who runs a laundromat with her husband. When she’s being audited by the IRS, she gets a peek into her life in various different realities, which range from the exciting to the action-heavy to the incredibly weird. Through it all, writers/directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert maintain a deep, beating heart to ultimately tell a story about family, mothers and daughters and the little things in life that can mean everything. It won seven Oscars including Best Actress for Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan and Best Director.

looper-bruce-willis-joseph-gordon-levitt

Before Rian Johnson made “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” or the “Knives Out” movies, he wrote and directed this unique sci-fi thriller with a brilliant twist. “Looper” takes place in a world in which time travel has not been invented yet but will be, and in the future criminals send targets back in time to be murdered in the past, thus disposing of the body. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of these assassins, but he’s thrown one day when the target that appears before him is his older self (played by Bruce Willis). He hesitates and his future self gets free, and the two set about on a journey fraught with tension. Emily Blunt co-stars and this wonderfully original film builds to a shocking climax.

Back to the Future Trilogy

cruise movies on netflix

“Back to the Future” is not only one of the best film trilogies of all time, it’s also one of the most bingeable. The original 1985 film is a bona fide classic with Michael J. Fox playing Marty McFly, a high schooler who accidentally travels back in time and interacts with his parents as high schoolers (played by Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover). 1989’s “Back to the Future Part II” and 1990’s “Back to the Future Part III” were shot back-to-back but are wildly different films – “Part II” travels to the future and offers a decidedly ‘80s twist on dystopia while “Part III” is a full-blown Western. Taken together, director Robert Zemeckis’ trilogy is a wildly entertaining sci-fi jaunt.

Call Me by Your Name

call-me-by-your-name-timothee-chalamet

The film that really put Timothee Chalamet on the map, “Call Me by Your Name” is one of the most deeply felt love stories ever put to screen. Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino transports the viewer to a time and place, yes, but also exudes the feeling of lust, love and possibility throughout. Chalamet plays a 17-year-old vacationing with his family in Italy in 1983 who strikes up a romantic relationship with a 24-year-old grad student (played by Armie Hammer). The soundtrack features two original songs by Sufjan Stevens, and the supporting performance by Michael Stuhlbarg is outstanding. If you dug “Challengers,” also by Guadagnino, check out the director’s more quietly romantic spin on a love story.

easy-a

A delightful romantic comedy with a teen twist, “Easy A” is also a terrific showcase for the charms and talent of Emma Stone. The eventual Oscar winner stars in this 2010 film as a high school student named Olive who, in a bid to help her friend who’s being bullied for being gay, offers to pretend to have sex with him. Olive soon gets a bit of a reputation, all the while boys from her school start paying her in gifts in return for telling people they hooked up. “The Scarlet Letter” serves as a backdrop for this bitingly funny and sharp teen tale, and the swell ensemble cast includes Penn Badgley, Thomas Hayden Church, Lisa Kudrow, Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson.

1917

Sam Mendes’ one-shot World War I film earned a boatload of Oscars, and deservedly so. The film is presented as one long, unbroken take (for which cinematographer Roger Deakins won an Academy Award) as it follows a soldier played by George MacKay through one day on the battlefield in April, 1917. It’s an astounding accomplishment and best watched with your full attention. Andrew Scott, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden and Mark Strong all have memorable but small roles as MacKay’s character makes his way through the muck.

The Breakfast Club

"The Breakfast Club" (Universal Pictures)

With “Brats” hitting Hulu this month, now’s the perfect time to revisit John Hughes’ perfect “The Breakfast Club.” The 1985 film chronicles a single day of Saturday detention for five high school students, all from different backgrounds/cliques, and finds them bonding in surprising ways. The level at which this film gets the teenage struggle remains a stunning feat, and there’s something magical about the chemistry of Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall altogether.

tangerine-movie

Before “The Florida Project” or “Red Rocket,” filmmaker Sean Baker burst onto the scene with his 2015 comedy “Tangerine” – shot entirely on an iPhone. Kitana Kiki Rodriguez stars as a trans sex worker living in Los Angeles who finds out that her boyfriend and pimp has been cheating on her. While it looks like an indie and tackles some heavy material at times, the film has the tone and pacing of a raucous comedy, and is all the better for it. Even better to brush up on Baker’s breakout film ahead of the release of his new film  “Anora,”  which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year.

Baby Driver

baby-driver-ansel-elgort

“Shaun of the Dead” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” filmmaker Edgar Wright combined his love of music and action filmmaking in 2017’s “Baby Driver,” which is packed wall-to-wall with music. Ansel Elgort is a getaway driver with tinnitus who constantly listens to music to drown out the ringing in his ears, but Wright times the action beats of the story to the songs that are playing, resulting in something of an action musical. Lily James is the object of Baby’s affection, and the ensemble cast also includes Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Eiza Gonzalez and, uh, Kevin Spacey.

Anyone but You

anyone-but-you

This romcom took the world by storm after it hit Netflix, but it was first released in theaters by Sony in December. Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney play a pair of strangers who meet, hook up and then immediately part ways after a misunderstanding. They’re forced to play nice when a mutual friend invites them to a wedding in Australia, but wouldn’t you know it, they kinda start to like each other. Powell proves his leading man muster and this one’s a fun throwback.

inside-man-denzel-washington-chiwetel-ejiofor

Spike Lee’s 2006 thriller “Inside Man” is one of the director’s best and most entertaining films. The story opens in the aftermath of a bank heist, with those taken hostage giving their interviews to police about what happened. The film then flashes back to portray the events as they unfold, with Denzel Washington playing the detective trying to talk down the robber and kidnapper (played by Clive Owen) who seems to be harboring some kind of secret. Mind games ensue, and this one keeps you guessing all the way up through the end.

moneyball-brad-pitt

Brad Pitt gives one of his best performances in the 2011 drama “Moneyball,” an artful crowdpleaser in the best way. Directed by Bennett Miller and written by Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian, “Moneyball” charts former MLB flameout Billy Beane (Pitt) who’s now general manager of the Oakland Athletics and recruits a statistician with zero baseball experience (played by Jonah Hill in an Oscar-nominated performance) to help him shake up the team. The film is based on a true and controversial story, and while the sports angle is interesting, Pitt’s turn as a man filled with regret and shame hits you right in the gut.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Impossibly, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” might be even better than “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which itself is nearly a masterpiece. The sequel — once again produced and written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller — finds Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) contending with the multiverse of Spider-People by going to various other universes, and squaring off against a unique antagonist known as The Spot (Jason Schwartzman) who keeps slipping through various universes. It builds to a climax worthy of comparisons to “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back,” no small feat.

The Killer

David Fincher’s “The Killer” is a delightfully unique twist on the hitman movie. Written by “Seven” writer Andrew Kevin Walker, the film is broken up into chapters and follows an assassin played by Michael Fassbender in the wake of a hit gone wrong. But whereas most films would go right, “The Killer” goes left. There is precious little dialogue spoken out loud by Fassbender’s character as our insight into this machine-like presence comes from lengthy voiceovers. Fincher delights in immersing us into this man’s psyche as he world kinda sorta unravels.

Glass Onion

glass-onion-daniel-craig-janelle-monae

You simply must, must,  must  watch  “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” if you enjoy things like “fun” and “comedy.” This “Knives Out” sequel (once again written and directed by Rian Johnson) is a brand new mystery, with Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc as the only returning character from the original film. This time, he’s invited to a secluded island by a tech billionaire (played by Edward Norton), who has gathered a group of his closest friends – played by Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr. and Janelle Monae – in Greece to play an elaborate murder mystery game. To say more would spoil the surprises, but suffice it to say this is just as thrilling, hilarious and surprising as the first “Knives Out” and you’ll want to watch it again immediately once it’s over.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

cruise movies on netflix

Guillermo del Toro’s first stop-motion feature film is as emotional as you’d expect, and this is “Pinocchio” like you’ve never seen the story before. Co-written and directed by del Toro, this adaptation features the voices of Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Burn Gorman, Cate Blanchett, Finn Wolfhard, Ron Perlman and Tilda Swinton and offers up a fantastical twist on the Carlo Collodi Italian classic. Emotional and awe-inspiring in equal measure, and set against the backdrop of fascist Italy, this is a gorgeous work of art.

The first film to ever earn a woman an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography, 2017’s “Mudbound” is a moving and compelling historical drama. Directed by Dee Rees and shot by Rachel Morrison, the film follows two World War II veterans as they return home to Mississippi, one white and one Black. Carey Mulligan, Jason Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund and Mary J. Blige anchor the terrific ensemble cast as the film tackles race relations in the past with a direct line to our present, packed with rich and complex characters.

Phantom Thread

phantom-thread-daniel-day-lewis

While “The Master” may be filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson at his most serious, “ Phantom Thread ” is him at his most playful. The acerbic romance stars Daniel Day-Lewis in his final onscreen role before his retirement and is set in 1954 London. Day-Lewis stars as a famous fashion designer who takes his meticulous process seriously. But when he strikes up a relationship with a waitress, his routine starts to get shaken up, and he must consider the impact said relationship will have on his work. This is Paul Thomas Anderson’s version of a twisted romantic drama, and the film is surprisingly funny.

The Power of the Dog

power of the dog

Writer/director Jane Campion’s 2021 drama “The Power of the Dog” is a powerful and surprising film about, among other things, family. Set in 1925 Montana, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons play a pair of brothers whose strained relationship is pushed to the limit when Plemons marries a widowed single mother (played by Kirsten Dunst) on a whim, and brings her son (played by Kodi Smit-McPhee) to live with them on their ranch. The performances are top-notch all around, as Campion crafts a complex and tension-filled character-centric drama that’s certainly one of 2021’s best films.

tick, tick… BOOM!

tick-tick-boom-andrew-garfield

“Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda makes his feature directorial debut with the Netflix musical “tick, tick… BOOM!,” based on the autobiographical stage musical by “Rent” creator Jonathan Larson. Andrew Garfield plays Larson, who is on the cusp of turning 30 and has yet to have a masterpiece staged on Broadway. As he puts the finishing touches on his sci-fi rock epic, he grapples with his own anxieties, his crumbling relationship with his girlfriend, and the impending AIDS epidemic that’s taking his friends far too quickly. The songs are incredible and the direction is inspired, but Garfield’s electric and soulful performance makes this a must-watch.

tick tick BOOM

This one might come with a “For Cinephiles Only” warning, but if that describes you there’s much to love in David Fincher’s 2020 film “Mank.” Gary Oldman stars as Hollywood writer Herman J. Mankiewicz as the film chronicles his experience writing the screenplay for “Citizen Kane,” all while flashing back to events from his life that inspired certain characters and themes in what many consider to be the greatest film ever made. Fincher presents the film entirely in black-and-white (it won the Oscar for Best Cinematography), and Amanda Seyfried gives a terrific performance as Marion Davies while Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross compose a surprising original score.

Private Life

private-life-kathryn-hahn-paul-giamatti-image

Kathryn Hahn has made a career out of scene-stealing supporting performances, but she takes center stage in writer/director Tamara Jenkins’ 2018 dramedy “Private Life.” Inspired by Jenkins’ own experience, Hahn and Paul Giamatti sta r as a middle-aged New York City couple struggling through infertility who decide to try and have a child through IVF. The film follows the ups and downs of infertility in heartbreaking detail, while also finding moments of humor throughout that ring true to life. Hahn and Giamatti are spectacular together, as they also chronicle how their journey strains their marriage.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

cruise movies on netflix

This Western anthology from the Coen Brothers is a delightful romp that builds to a shockingly emotional conclusion. “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is made up of six different stories set in the Old West, each featuring different characters. Themes of mortality, morality and justice are prevalent throughout “Buster Scruggs” just as they are through the Coens’ other films, but this time all against a wonderful, slightly exaggerated Western backdrop. The stellar cast includes Tim Blake Nelson, Stephen Root, Zoe Kazan, Bill Heck, Liam Neeson and Brendan Gleeson.

Marriage Story

cruise movies on netflix

Writer/director Noah Baumbach 2019’s drama “ Marriage Story ” is, ultimately, a divorce story, but it’s so richly drawn and beautifully acted that you’ll find your own heart breaking as you watch the conscious uncoupling of a pair played by Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. This is far from a mean-spirited or even depressing film. Instead, while it does indeed chronicle the dissolution of a relationship (inspired by Baumbach’s own life) and how the divorce impacts their young son, “Marriage Story” smartly always keeps an eye on one very important fact: while these two individuals may be splitting up, that doesn’t mean the love they once had for each other wasn’t real. Driver and Johansson are terrific, and Laura Dern is a scene-stealer in her Oscar-winning supporting turn.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines

cruise movies on netflix

If you’re looking for a movie the whole family can enjoy, the 2021 Netflix original “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” is an emotional crowd-pleaser that’s as funny as it is inventive. Directed by Mike Rianda and produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the film follows a family going on a cross-country road trip to send their eldest daughter Katie (Abbi Jacobson) to college, where she hopes to learn how to become a filmmaker. The family isn’t on the best terms when the road trip begins, which makes things even trickier when a robot uprising occurs, leaving the dysfunctional Mitchells as humanity’s last hope. This is a hilarious, colorful and heartfelt story about the importance of communication.

Netflix has a wide variety of documentaries to choose from, but Ava DuVernay’s 2016 film “13th” is a must-watch. The doc delves into mass incarceration in the United States, and how race and injustice intersect with the issue, through the prism of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which abolishes slavery except as punishment for a crime. Through a number of interviews, DuVernay examines why a disproportionate number of Black people are incarcerated in the U.S., and how the current justice system perpetuates this injustice.

Enola Holmes

cruise movies on netflix

One of the great things about Netflix is how it has a little bit of something for everyone, and in that vein, the YA-skewing “Enola Holmes” is a delight for the teenaged crowd (and beyond). Based on the young adult series of the same name by author Nancy Springer, the film stars Millie Bobby Brown as the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill). When her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) goes missing, Enola leaves the safety of her home compound and ventures into London to try and solve this mystery. Along the way, however, Enola learns that her mother kept many secrets of her own. This is a rollicking mystery-adventure that’s also a sweet and substantial coming-of-age story, all wrapped up in a gorgeous 19th century Victorian package.

Millie Bobby Brown in "Enola Holmes"

If you’re into romantic comedies, you simply must check out “Set It Up.” This Netflix original is a throwback in the best way, as Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell have that Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks chemistry in a story about friends turning into lovers. They play overworked assistants to demanding bosses (played by Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs) and hatch a plan to set their bosses up in an effort to earn more free time themselves. But their scheming puts them in frequent close contact, during which sparks fly.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

cruise movies on netflix

Before Taika Waititi took audiences by storm with “Thor: Ragnarok” and won an Oscar with “Jojo Rabbit,” he crafted a wonderfully whimsical comedy called “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” The film stars Julian Dennison as a troubled youth who goes on the run with a cantankerous man (played by Sam Neill) when both are being hunted through a remote part of Australia. The film is packed with Waititi’s signature sense of humor and unique style, and Dennison and Neill make for one heck of a dynamic duo.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

cruise movies on netflix

The Netflix original comedy “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” is not just an incredibly funny film, it’s a surprisingly emotional one too. Based on an original idea by Will Ferrell, the “Elf” actor stars as one half of an Icelandic duo alongside Rachel McAdams, both of whom are thrust into the spotlight when they’re unexpectedly selected to compete in the international singing competition Eurovision. The film is packed with some genuinely great songs, and a sweet story about staying true to your roots in the face of immense growth.

The Fear Street Trilogy

cruise movies on netflix

Everyone loves a good scare, but the “Fear Street” trilogy gives you three times the thrills for the price of one overarching story. These three interconnected films trace the origins of a witch’s curse on a small town, covering events in 1994 in the “Scream”-inspired first film, then heading back to 1978 for the summer camp slasher sequel, before concluding in the year 1666 for the third and final feature that reveals the origin story of the Shadyside witch. Colorful, fun and genuinely scary, the “Fear Street” trilogy tells a truly epic horror story.

Maya Hawke FEAR STREET PART ONE: 1994

Miss Americana

cruise movies on netflix

The Taylor Swift documentary “Miss Americana” is full of surprises. While the film begins by chronicling Swift’s career, complete with the ups and downs it encompassed, it soon morphs into the origin story of a feminist as Swift begins to speak out on socio-political issues important to her. It’s a fascinating window into the management of fame, as some around her caution against making any kinds of political statements for fear of alienating her fanbase. Swift is honest throughout – or as honest as a documentary like this can be – and the film doesn’t shy away from tough moments like Kanye West infamously interrupting her at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

The Irishman

cruise movies on netflix

Martin Scorsese’s 3-hour-and-40-minute gangster epic “The Irishman” is best viewed in one sitting – trust me. The brilliance of the film is in its construction, as Scorsese charts the career of a hitman for the mob from the 1950s up to the present day. But unlike the bombast of “Goodfellas,” this is a film where regret and grief hang over nearly every frame, subtly building until the mournful third act hits you like a ton of bricks. Robert De Niro’s Frank Sheeran spends his entire life killing people, and what does it all add up to? Scorsese gets downright philosophical with questions of morality and mortality, crafting a self-reflexive film about what it means to come to the end of your life and look back on what you’ve done, why you did it and whether it was all worth it in the end.

Da 5 Bloods

cruise movies on netflix

Spike Lee is not known for making bland films, and indeed his 2020 Vietnam veterans drama “Da 5 Bloods” is confrontational in the best way. The story revolves around four aging Vietnam War veterans who return to the Southeast Asian country to search for the remains of their fallen leader — and also a trove of buried treasure. Along the way they confront their own fears and differences, as Lee’s film delves into how America left an entire generation of soldiers behind.

cruise movies on netflix

Netflix is host to a ton of great documentaries, including “Crip Camp.” This Oscar-nominated 2020 film begins by showcasing archival footage from a camp in the 1970s that was created for teens with disabilities, before then following various individuals as they fought for disability rights. It’s a moving portrait of activism that shows just how far we’ve come as a country, and how far we have left to go.

As always, we’ll split our best new movie posts into two halves. We’ll first cover all the new Netflix Original movies we’re looking forward to throughout the month of September, which will drop globally. Then, we’ll hone in on some of the movies specifically coming to those in the United States on a licensed basis. Other regions’ availability will vary on these titles.

Most Anticipated New Netflix Original Movies for September

His three daughters (2024).

Coming to Netflix : September 20th

The start of Fall means one big thing: the start of Netflix’s awards movie lineup. Undoubtedly, kicking that lineup off very strong this year is His Three Daughters, which premiered at film festivals last year and finally hit Netflix and features a trio of heavyweight actresses: Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen.

Already sitting at 100% on RottenTomatoes , the movie tells a somber story of three sisters reuniting after years apart to clean up their affairs and spend some valuable time with their elderly father, who is close to passing away.

If you fancy seeing this movie on the big screen, you will have a few chances to see it in the two weeks leading up to its release on Netflix. It will appear in select theaters beginning September 6th. Don’t expect a wide rollout, though, so it’ll mainly be available in big cities.

Uglies (2024)

Coming to Netflix : September 13th

Uglies Netflix Teaser Image

Picture: Netflix

Some returning Netflix stars are coming together for this new sci-fi adaptation of the Scott Westerfeld book, including Joey King (seen in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth and A Family Affair ), Chase Stokes (of Outer Banks fame), and Laverne Cox ( Orange is the New Black ). It’s set in a futuristic dystopia where, before hitting adulthood, teens are given cosmetic surgery to enforce strict, draconian beauty standards. This story focuses on one teen who opts out of the surgery to go looking for her missing friend instead.

McG is helming the movie’s direction and has also worked with Netflix on previous movies, including last year’s Family Switch and The Babysitter . Honestly, this one could be a coin toss as to how it turns out. It’s got all the pieces to be pretty good potentially (including a poster ripped straight from Divergent), but we’ll see how it does on execution.

Apollo 13: Survival (2024)

Coming to Netflix : September 5th

Apollo 13 Survival Netflix Doc

Apollo 13 Survival Netflix Doc

Moving over to a documentary feature, we were tempted to recommend Will & Harper, the new doc about Will Ferrell spending time on a road trip with friend Harper Steele, who recently transitioned, but as I’m venturing off to Space Center Houston later in September, I’m most amped for this retelling of NASA’s rescue mission when three astronauts were trapped in space.

Per Fee Fie Foe , the doc directed by Peter Middleton has access to the complete audio recordings of the Apollo 13 mission alongside extraordinary new footage that’ll make this the definitive retelling.

Boxer (2024)

Coming to Netflix: September 11th

Boxer Netflix Movie

Finally, we always like to highlight one of the international movies coming up on Netflix, and this month, we’re most excited to see how Boxer comes to fruition because of the fascinating time period the movie is set in. Produced in Poland, the movie’s plot follows a young boxer who has fleed the country (which was under communist rule) to chase his dreams of becoming a well-known and successful boxer.

Best Licensed Movies Coming to Netflix in September 2024

I used to be funny (2024).

There aren’t currently many licensed movies scheduled for release on Netflix US next month that’ll be making their SVOD debuts, but one we can highlight at least for now is Ally Pankiw’s much-loved comedy drama I Used to Be Funny , starring Rachel Sennott, Olga Petsa, and Jason Jones.

Sennott plays the role of Sam Cowell, a young woman who is vying to become a stand-up comedian but faces trials and tribulations while struggling with PTSD and the difficult choice of having to search for a child that she used to nanny.

V.S. Wells for Georgia Straight summarizes the film’s great reviews received across the board : “I Used to Be Funny is smart, timely, and deeply felt. There’s plenty to chew on—though it’s bittersweet.”

3:10 to Yuma (2007)

Coming to Netflix : September 1st

310 To Yuma Netflix

Picture: Lionsgate Films

Releasing on the first of the month (which we have to say is probably one of the weakest batches of movies we’ve seen in quite some time) is 3:10 to Yuma , a Western action crime drama featuring heavyweights Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.

It comes from director James Mangold and tells the story of a small-time rancher tasked with keeping a well-known outlaw in his detainment despite a looming battle on the horizon. It’s well-directed, acted, and still looks stunning. Given the genre’s revival in recent years, it’s a great time to rewatch or experience it for the first time.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Coming to Netflix : September 7th

How has it now been a decade since Edge of Tomorrow hit theaters? It’s crazy how time flies, but what’s more crazy is that this is the first time this fantastic sci-fi action movie has ever streamed on Netflix in the US.

Starring Tom Cruise as Bill Cage and Emily Blunt as Rita Vrataski, this is the genre’s equivalent of Groundhog Day, with a soldier reliving humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization again and again. Easily one of Cruise’s and Blunt’s best films in their vast libraries, this movie has it all. It has a great script, stunning CGI, and some stunning performances.

Grave of the Fireflies (1989)

Coming to Netflix : September 16th

Grave Of The Fireflies Is Coming To Netflix In September 2024

Picture: Studio Ghibli

Do you have a box of tissues ready? They won’t be enough. Studio Ghibli’s tear-jerking 1989 animated movie , with a runtime of an hour and a half, is coming to Netflix from director Isao Takahata midway through the month.

Set during the final few months of World War II, we follow two children orphaned by the conflict and struggling to survive in the face of extreme hardship. Perhaps one of the best anti-war films ever created, this is not one to be missed.

Note that this movie is releasing widely on Netflix, meaning everywhere internationally, where the entire Studio Ghibli library is streaming (including their new movie later this year ) is getting it too.

Keep this post bookmarked. We’ll update it midway through September with some additional picks that weren’t announced to be coming to Netflix ahead of time.

What are you looking forward to watching in September? Let us know in the comments.

7 best disaster movies on Netflix to stream right now

It's the end of the world as we know it

Amber Midthunder and Liam Neeson in Ice Road

With all that's going on in the world, there's something wonderfully predictable and entertaining about a good disaster flick. As exaggerated as the disaster seems, it removes us from the existing trials of life and puts us into an extreme that's beyond the possibility of ever happening. That's what makes them so appealing. Add vivid special effects and a brave hero to save a few survivors, and you have a recipe for an excellent movie-watching experience.

Netflix has some of the best disaster movies available. Whether you prefer to watch a flood, total world destruction, or watch a fire in the tallest building in the world, there is something for just about everyone. These movies will keep you on the edge of your seat and have you relieved that at least whatever is on your screen isn't happening outside your window.

In this disaster movie, a team of scientists discovers that a massive solar flare has caused the Earth's core to heat up. Eventually, this will cause the entire crust to become severely unstable and trigger massive tsunamis that threaten the entire planet. In preparation for this apocalyptic event, leaders around the world join together to build arks that will save a select few.

John Cusack stars as Jackson Curtis, an author who escapes from the terrifying events along with his ex-wife, their two kids, and her new husband. Chiwetel Ejiofor does an excellent job as Adrian Helmsley, the scientist who sounds the alarm. Oliver Platt's Carl Anheuser contrasts as the cynical government official set on mainly saving whose most important. You'll appreciate the numerous familiar faces in this film as well as the over-the-top special effects.

Watch on Netflix

'Don't Look Up'

The movie "Don't Look Up" has all of Earth under threat by a comet that could obliterate the planet. Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) discover the impending doom and go on a media tour to share the news with the planet. Unfortunately, thanks to other priorities, no one seems to care, including the U.S. President (Meryl Streep) and her Chief of Staff son (Jonah Hill).

This disaster movie is less about the effects as much as it is about the message that our society does not pay attention to urgent problems happening right before our eyes. However, that underlying theme is played out skillfully thanks to the blend of comedy and action in the film as well as a healthy dose of urgency (from those who care) typically found in disaster flicks.

'Skyscraper'

This list of disaster movies wouldn't be complete without including at least one starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. In "Skyscraper," Johnson's Will Sawyer is hired to review the security of the tallest buildings in the world in Hong Kong. However, when a fire erupts in the building, he's blamed for it. His mission is to not only clear his name but also save his family who are stuck inside the blazing building.

For disaster movie lovers, this film offers plenty to enjoy, from the exciting action to the cool downtown scenery to the realistic effects of the building going up in flames. It has a vibe similar to "Die Hard," so it's got big entertainment value.

'The Ice Road'

When a diamond mine in the remote regions of Canada collapses, Liam Neeson's Mike McCann is hired to drive much-needed wellheads to the mine. Joining him is his brother Gurty McCann (Marcus Thomas) and an indigenous woman named Tantoo (Amber Midthunder). However, all of this trucking has to happen over frozen ocean waters, enhancing the intensity of their journey.

While "The Ice Road" leans more toward an action flick, watching Liam Neeson navigate the treacherous icy roads, and on a mission to save the miners gives it all the vibes of a classic disaster movie. Jonathan Hensleigh wrote and directed this film, known for his work on a lot of action movies like" Armageddon" and "Die Hard with a Vengeance."

If you can't get enough of tsunamis, you should check out "The Wave." The film is based on the idea that the Norwegian mountain, Åkneset, will collapse into the Geiranger fjord — a deep and narrow body of water — and trigger a massive flood.

The primary focus is on Kristian Eikjord (Kristoffer Joner), a geologist who gets swept up in the action while he and his family are trying to move out of the area. He is separated from his wife, Idun (Ane Dahl Torp), and his children who are spending time at the hotel where she has to work for a few remaining days. This adds to the chaos as the wall of water crashes into the small town.

'Melancholia'

"Melancholia" uses the impending collision of a mysterious planet with Earth to offer a deeper meaning that will resonate long after it's over. Kirsten Dunst stars as Justine, who is newly married to Alexander Skarsgård's Michael. However, things are complicated in light of the tragic events about to happen. The movie switches focus to follow the storyline of Justine's sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), who struggles to face the potential end of life on Earth as we know it.

This film isn't your typical disaster film and focuses more on the characters' emotional states. It also has excellent cinematography that captures everyone's emotional state. Director Lars von Trier is known for his thought-provoking and fairly dark films, so that will give you some insight into what to expect in this remarkable but somber disaster movie.

'The Impossible'

Watching a disaster movie based on true events is always captivating. "The Impossible" takes you on the journey experienced by the Belon-Alvarez family, who survived the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Marie (Naomi Watts) and Henry (Ewan McGregor) are on Christmas vacation in Thailand with their two children. However, they barely have time to relax when the wave hits, separating the family and leaving them wondering if their loved ones survived.

The film does an excellent job of portraying the real experiences of the survivors. Watts earned an Oscar nomination, which was well-deserved considering how expertly she displayed the roller coaster of emotions her character experienced. You'll likely be crying throughout this film, so grab some tissues.

Top 10 New Movies On Netflix In August 2024: From The Union To Fury

From Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg's Netflix original The Union to Brad Pitt's World War II movie Fury, here are ten best movies on Netflix that debuted the streamer this August.

Share Article

A wave of new movies and series have landed on Netflix this August including several originals. While it is a mammoth task to find the right movie to watch from the vast library of the streamer, we have handpicked the ten best movies for you to watch this month. These movies are selected across genres to ensure a diverse list. So, buckle up, here are the ten best movies on Netflix landing the streamer in August so far that you should watch right now.

Rebel Moon: Director’s Cut

Both of the Rebel Moon: Director’s Cut are an attempt by director Zack Snyder to redeem the disastrous critical bombing of the two-part original movies. Although the Director’s Cut was far from clearing the bad rep the movies have received, it certainly provides a wider perspective on the narratives explaining several great details the movie had to shrink due to the time constraint.

The Director’s Cut movies are the brave and bold versions of the original movies with an R rating to complement even a darker tone of the space opera in contrast to the P-13 versions. Sofia Boutella’s Kora gathers a team to fight the tyrannical Imperium but the latest extended versions have given room to the evolution of several characters in the movie franchise. So, the extended cuts are definitely worth watching.

Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg-starrer brand new Netflix original is a refreshing action thriller with subtle comical elements embedded with it. The movie follows Mike played by Wahlberg, a no-nonsense construction worker, who finds himself unexpectedly pulled into the world of espionage when Berry’s character Roxanne, his high school sweetheart, enlists him for a critical U.S. intelligence mission. Directed by Julian Farino who previously directed the critically acclaimed Marvellous, made sure to keep the audience entertained throughout.

Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie

Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie is another Netflix original entry to the list that comes from the popular SpongeBob franchise. The adventure comedy is hilarious and perfect to watch with your entire family.

The movie follows SpongeBob and Sandy Cheeks performed by Tom Kenny and Carolyn Lawrence respectively. When Bikini Bottom is mysteriously lifted from the ocean, SpongeBob and Sandy Cheeks travel to Sandy's home state of Texas. There, they meet her family and team up to rescue Bikini Bottom from the clutches of a ruthless CEO. Liza Johnson directed the movie from a screenplay by Tom Stern and Kaz.

Lolo and the Kid

Written, directed, and produced by Benedict Mique, the Netflix original Lolo and the Kid is loved by both critics and audiences with an 83% Tomatometer score and a stunning 91% Popcornmeter positive rating. The movie starring Euwenn Mikaell, and Joel Torre follows a hustler and the child he’s raised to make a living by conning the rich, but a life-altering chance could threaten the bond that’s kept them together.

The Spectacular Now

The Spectacular Now follows a careless high school senior (Miles Teller) who has been living life wildly until he starts seeing it differently after his encounter with a nonconformist "nice girl" played by Shailene Woodley. Heaps of raw emotion of the characters in The Spectacular Now feel quite realistic to the viewer.

James Ponsoldt who has Smashed, Off the Black, and several acclaimed titles to his credit helmed The Spectacular Now which is based on Tim Tharp’s novel of the same name. The 2013 movie is embedded with a beautiful narrative that will occasionally propel you to chuckle.

Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color

The Netflix exclusive to Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color echoes the 2023 original movie Godzilla Minus One which won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. However, the monochrome version of the movie somehow managed to create the classical essence of the same movie.

The Netflix version of the movie perfectly fits the narrative which is set against the backdrop of World War II Japan. Post-war Japan is at its devastating point but they must face a new crisis that emerges in the form of a giant Godzilla monster, soaked in the horrific power of the atomic bomb and powered by it.

The plot of Room is pretty simple, but Lenny Abrahamson’s direction of the movie will hook you from start to finish. A young boy named Jacob Newsome (Jacob Tremblay) has been confined in a room with his mother since birth. He is unaware of the world beyond its walls. The curiosity of the boy drives the narrative forward as his mother played by Captain Marvel star Larson, has to answer his questions. Larson won an Oscar for for her portrayal of the character in Room.

Star Trek Beyond

Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond has a stunning 86% Tomatometer score with 80% positive audience reception. Despite J. J. Abrams’ departure from the franchise, the threequel does not disappoint as Lin has maintained the legacy of the franchise.

Like the previous movie in the popular franchise, Star Trek Beyond is also packed with immaculate action adventure. Idris Elba joined the cast as the big bad Krall alongside the franchise stars Chris Pine appearing as Kirk, with Zachary Quinto reprising the role of Spock. Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, and other recurring stars also returned in the movie.

Jack Reacher

Though Tom Cruise originally played the character, Alan Ritchson's portrayal as Jack Reacher in Prime Video series was well received by the fans. In 2012, Christopher McQuarrie presented the character with his action thriller Jack Reacher. This actor-director duo has done a few projects together, some slates of which include the Mission Impossible series.

This gripping drama follows a homicide investigation into a crime committed by a skilled military sniper responsible for a mass shooting. Cruise plays the central character, based on the 2005 novel One Shot by Lee Child. Richard Jenkins, Rosamund Pike, amongst others.

Fury is one of the very few Second World War backdrops which found its realistic portrayal as acute observation by director David Ayer has made it a worthwhile war film. The 2014 movie is written, directed, and co-produced by Ayer; stars Brad Pitt as Sergeant Don "Wardaddy" Collier. Shia LaBeouf, alongside Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, Jon Bernthal, and Scott Eastwood also supported the movie with brilliant performances.

Fury tells the story of a tank crew led by Collier who is going through many emotional turmoils on the battlefield during the final months of World War II. It’s brutal but essentially raw which is complemented by Roman Vasyanov’s masterful cinematography.

Fans of S.W.A.T. are about to face some disappointing news, as the 2003 action-packed film will be leaving Netflix at the end of September. The film, which stars Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, Michelle Rodriguez , and LL Cool J, has been a staple for action movie enthusiasts who enjoy a blend of intense action sequences and gripping drama. With its departure, viewers will no longer be able to stream the movie that brought a modern twist to the 1970s television classic .

Directed by Clark Johnson , S.W.A.T. follows a team of highly skilled LAPD officers tasked with escorting an international criminal out of the country. When a massive bounty is placed on the criminal’s head, the team must fend off a series of dangerous and determined criminals who are eager to claim the reward. The film's high-octane action, combined with its star-studded cast, has made it a fan favorite since its release.

For those who have enjoyed revisiting this 2003 blockbuster on Netflix, time is running out to watch it on the platform. Whether you’re a longtime fan or someone looking to experience the thrills for the first time, make sure to catch S.W.A.T. before it leaves Netflix at the end of September.

The Legacy of S.W.A.T. : From TV Series to Film and Back

The S.W.A.T. film is deeply rooted in the legacy of the original 1975 television series of the same name. The show, which aired for two seasons, followed the adventures of a Special Weapons and Tactics team in Los Angeles. The series became iconic for its action sequences and the unforgettable theme song, which remains one of the most recognisable TV themes of all time.

The 2003 film adaptation sought to bring the gritty, action-packed world of the original series to a new generation. While it updated the story for modern audiences, it retained the core elements that made the original series a hit: a focus on teamwork, strategy, and high-stakes scenarios. The movie was well-received by audiences, and its success contributed to a renewed interest in the S.W.A.T. franchise.

That interest eventually led to the development of the modern S.W.A.T. TV series, which premiered in 2017. Starring Shemar Moore as the leader of the elite team, the current series takes a more character-driven approach while maintaining the intense action and tactical operations that fans expect. The show has been praised for its diverse cast and its willingness to tackle contemporary social issues within the framework of an action-packed police drama.

As the 2003 film prepares to exit Netflix, fans of the S.W.A.T. franchise can still enjoy the current television series for one more season , which continues to expand on the themes and action that have defined the brand for decades. While the film’s departure is certainly a loss, the ongoing TV series ensures that the spirit of S.W.A.T. remains alive and well.

Don’t miss your last chance to watch the 2003 S.W.A.T. film on Netflix before it leaves at the end of September.
