YOUNG & STRANGE (UK)

Young & Strange started their journey together at 8 years old when their childhood friendship was cemented with a common interest in all things magic. They spent their teenage years attempting, and failing, to make Las Vegas style illusions with cardboard and tape. With little money, they were forced to innovate, creating original illusions and magic tricks – this early experience has led them to become one of the most unique illusion acts in the world.  

Their innovative development of spectacular illusions, along with their own live shows, have created opportunities on prime time television, in London’s West End and on the biggest stages around the world.  

In addition to Live performances Young & Strange have also created online content which showcases original formats for magic. Their video ‘Young & Strange take Las Vegas to Television’ included the illusionists videobombing the background of a Live Sky News broadcast which went viral on the internet and had over 30 million views across various video sharing networks in just a few days. The Sky News video bomb also garnered attention from national and international publications including Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, Huffington Post, MTV and Cosmopolitan Magazine.

HOLLIE ENGLAND (UK/USA)

Hollie has appeared on America’s Got Talent, Showtime At The Apollo, Masters Of Illusion and The Go Big Show. Her career in magic has seen her perform in London’s West End, Hollywood’s Magic Castle, as a headliner in Las Vegas and on tour across the globe.  

A trained dancer and musical theatre performer, Hollie found herself transitioning into the magic world after constantly getting hired as 'the girl in the box'. After working with many illusionists, she went on to associate produce, cast, direct and/ or choreograph multiple record-breaking Broadway shows, international tours and immersive magic attractions for companies such as Cirque Du Soleil. 

For her, magic is about trying to create something uniquely beautiful... and just maybe, convincing you for a few seconds that miracles might exist. In 2022, Hollie was awarded the prestigious 'Mandrake Award' (the Oscars of magic) in Paris, France whilst performing at the Folies Bergere.  

FERNANDO VELASCO (MEXICO/USA)

Fernando was 11 years old when his father’s job in the restaurant of the Magic Castle gave him an inside look into the world of illusion. Taken under the wing of some of America’s leading illusionists, Velasco was taught the "tricks of the trade", quickly developing his own style and winning accolades and awards from his colleagues in the magic community.  

 At only 26 years old, Fernando is pushing the boundaries of what a young escapologist can do, and in 2017 became the youngest performer in the world to present his version of ‘Houdini’s Water Torture Cell’ which saw him handcuffed and padlocked upside-down in a sealed 6ft tank of water.

How long is the show?

The show runs for approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes including one intermission – due to the interactive nature of the show this is subject to some fluctuation. Please note that some casino based performances may be shorter at the request of the facility.

Is the show family friendly?

Yes! However we do not recommend the show for children under 5 years due to moments of darkness and loud noises, and we do not admit children under 2 as the volume of the show (as with most live performances) could be damaging to their hearing.

Can I be a part of the show?

We don’t use any actors or stooges in the show so all volunteers are selected at random, however the performers require the assistance of multiple people throughout the show so you have a good chance of being involved!

On this landmark tour, the band undertook 26 performances at twenty separate locations in the UK and nine European countries over an eight-week period.

Queen’s latest ‘The Greatest’ episode celebrates their now legendary 1986 stadium tour of Europe – ‘The Magic Tour.’ You can watch the new episode in full below.

Rejuvenated by their history making Live Aid performance a year earlier, and the success of their A Kind Of Magic album, June 1986 saw Queen return to touring for what would be the biggest series of concerts of Queen’s career, and although the band had played vast venues before, there was a sense that this tour would take it to another level…

“We’re going to play the biggest stage ever built at Wembley with the greatest light show ever seen,” Roger Taylor told journalists ahead of the tour.

On ‘The Magic Tour’, the band would undertake 26 performances at twenty separate locations in the UK and nine European countries over an eight-week period including their first and only show in Budapest, Hungary.

Such was the vast scale and scope of the under-taking, the bridge-like stage structure required the services of a company normally involved in motorway and bridge construction. The trucks transporting the equipment would cover over 165,000 miles, the equivalent of nearly seven times around the world.

Talking here in the preparation stage for ‘The Magic Tour’, the band speak of the commitment they were taking on, with only Freddie expressing concerns about the weight such a massive tour would levy, but non-the-less expressing his enthusiasm for performing for large audiences.

Roger Taylor: “The thing we are all looking forward to most at the moment is this European tour.”

John Deacon: “And that’s quite a commitment from us in a way, because Freddie’s sometimes a little reluctant to go on the road these days.”

Freddie Mercury: “It’s been a while since we actually did a tour. It’s very, very exhausting for me to do what I have to do. The stages are getting bigger and everything, and you know I just like to feel that I’m perfectly fit to do these shows, and not just say ‘yes I’ll do it.”

John Deacon: “We’re starting on it now really, ideas for the staging, the lighting and that sort of thing.”

[Interviewer] “This particular tour you’re doing, you’re taking a hundred and sixty foot stage, which is the biggest ever constructed for a rock act?”

Roger Taylor: “Yes, it’s an absolutely massive stage. It’s really been designed to cope with the places that we’re playing in. To get the optimum out of those places.”

Brian May: “We usually go in someplace like a film studio which has this big, open…like an aircraft hangar I suppose…and just set everything up and put everything through its paces.”

Brian May: “Because it’s not enough for us to be rehearsed, we make sure every single lamp, every wire, is set up so everything’s going to be given a run through, so all the bugs can be ironed out before we get on tour. It’s like a full dress rehearsal.”

John Deacon: “We’ve been playing for so many years now, we do feel very relaxed playing in quite big gigs as well really.”

Roger Taylor: “Strangely enough, when you’re used to large audiences, 100,000 is almost less terrifying in some ways, than 5000. “It’s a strange thing with our band, the bigger the audience the better it seems to work. The audience contact seems to be better with the larger audiences.”

Brian May: “Once you’re on tour, I like to get on and do it. I don’t like to be hanging around on tour. I like to get in as much as you can because you can build up this great rhythm, and you get into the mood and the feel of playing, you play better each night, I think. If you see us at the end of the tour, we are a lot different from what we are at the beginning of the tour, because we’re in that rhythm. I suppose it’s almost like being an athlete, you just work on yourself and you have nothing else to think about, except doing your bit for that two hours as well as you can.”

Freddie Mercury: “There was a trend a few years ago, with the punk movement and whatever, where they said, ‘Oh, we want to play to the small audiences because we’re being intimate, and all that.’ Load of rubbish. I mean everybody who wants to be a star wants to play to the biggest audiences.”

As will be seen in part 2 of ‘The Magic Tour’, over the final few weeks of the tour, Queen would perform three of their biggest and most iconic gigs – demonstrating why they are regarded as the greatest live act.

Sphen, one half of world-famous gay penguin couple, dies – partner Magic mourns

Sphen, a gentoo penguin who became famous as part of a same-sex “power couple” with his partner Magic, has died at the age of 11 in Australia .

The couple, who were together for six years after they “fell in love” at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium , successfully fostered two chicks – Sphengic (also known as Lara) in 2018 and Clancy in 2020.

The pair – dubbed the “penguin power couple” – gained global attention in 2018 after their relationship became a symbol of equality and inspired cultural references , including a Mardi Gras float and a mention in the Netflix series Atypical .

“The loss of Sphen is heartbreaking to the penguin colony, the team, and everyone who has been inspired or positively impacted by Sphen and Magic’s story,” the aquarium’s general manager Richard Dilly said.

Sphen was nearly 12, old for gentoo penguins, when he passed away earlier this month, according to aquarium staff. Gentoo penguins are the world’s fastest underwater birds.

“Sphen and Magic’s love story captivated the world and it’s been an honour to welcome local and international fans, some of whom travelled long distances to see them in real life,” Mr Dilly said.

Numerous books recount their love story, and documentaries about same-sex animal couples have also featured Sphen and Magic, the aquarium staff said.

In 2021, when the couple celebrated their third anniversary together, the aquarium’s penguin keeper, Kiera Ponting, said she was “thrilled” to see the happy couple still together. She described them as one of the most devoted couples in the colony.

After Sphen’s passing, the aquarium team brought Magic, aged eight, to see his partner’s body to help him understand that Sphen would not be coming back.

Magic, who is now facing his first breeding season without Sphen, was allowed to see his partner’s body and sang in response. “He immediately started singing, which was beautifully reciprocated by the colony,” a spokesperson for the aquarium said.

“The team’s focus is now on Magic, who will soon prepare for his first breeding season without Sphen.” The aquarium staff earlier noted that in the wild, penguins typically only raise one chick at a time.

Sphen and Magic’s love story captivated the world. “Magic still regularly collects the most perfect pebble that he can find for Sphen, displaying what a great hunter and partner he can be,” Ms Ponting said in 2021.

“They set a great example to the rest of the colony. They’re inseparable and proving just how strong penguin bonds can be.

“We’ve noticed many of the newer penguin couples setting up their nests close to Sphen and Magic, which we think is them trying to learn from the best.”

The keepers first started to notice Sphen and Magic’s fondness for each other when they began bringing each other carefully selected pebbles for a nest. Had either not been interested, they would have rejected the pebbles by pushing them away with their beak. Instead, each admired the pebbles they were given.

Earlier, the aquarium staff had described Magic as excitable and playful, one who chased after toys and anything that shone. He would also greet visitors. Sphen, taller and with a bigger beak, was quieter, more serious, and less interested in toys and humans. But when they began to bow to each other – a way of flirting in gentoo penguin world – the aquarium staff took notice.

“You would see Magic standing in his spot looking for Sphen, and he would call and Sphen would come running over and give Magic a little bow and sing as well,” Tish Hannan, head of penguin supervision at the aquarium, said at the time. “They’ve chosen each other. That’s it. They’re bonded now.”

Through Sphen and Magic’s fame, the aquarium has also been able to “share important messages on conservation, plastic pollution, global warming, and the importance of protecting wild penguins through fundraising initiatives”, the aquarium said.

Sphen apparently passed away from natural causes earlier this month, just before his 12th birthday.

Heartbroken fans of the gay couple left messages for Sphen and Magic on the aquarium board. One said: “Rest well, Sphen. My heart is breaking for Magic, Lara, Clancy, and the whole penguin/sea-life team.”

Another wrote: “Thank you Sphen and Magic for showing the world that love naturally comes in many forms. Our hearts ache for Magic.”

And a third added: “My heart stopped when I read this news. I have always loved these penguins and the story of their unbreakable bond. Sphen, you will be missed by thousands. Sending all of my love and well wishes to the staff of SEA LIFE – and of course, to Magic.”
