Xeric Pays Homage To NASA Voyager With This 100 ATM Dive Watch

For space enthusiasts who can’t get enough of NASA timepieces , here’s another one from Xeric Watches: the NASA Voyager Automatic Watch. As the product name suggests, it is an automatic timepiece that pays homage to the robotic interstellar probes of the Voyager program . Voyager 1 and 2 were launched in 1977. 45 years on, Voyager is over 13 billion miles away still exploring and transmitting information back to Earth.

Most watches are rated at 50 or 100 meters (5 or 10 ATM) water resistance but like the Voyager, Xeric wants its first-ever dive watch to be able to explore deeper, be it in the ocean or space, and thus it beefed up the watch to withstand up to 1,000 meters (!), or 100 ATM (or about 3,390 feet).

To achieve this pretty out-of-this-world water resistance, Xeris has integrated a helium escape valve to safely release the helium build-up during decompression and it has a super thick, ultra scratch-resistant sapphire glass measuring 4 mm – that is 3x the thicker than most watches – and the crystal’s dial side is further treated with anti-reflective coating to improve legibility.

Speaking legibility, a thick coat of Super-LumiNova is applied to the hands and dial, further extending legibility in low light conditions. The Lume hands are inspired by the Voyager’s instrument booms, btw. The truss-style design reduces weight without sacrificing rigidity and serves to reduce unneeded strain on the mechanical components and also increase the power reserves.

Other features expected include a Seiko NH35 Automatic self-winding movement with up to 42 hours of power reserve, a stainless steel case, a 120-click unidirectional bezel with raised minutes for enhanced usability when wearing dive gloves, a case back with an inlaid replica of “the Golden Record” cover found on the outside of the Voyager spacecraft, and a bespoke two-tone silicone strap with a shape that reminiscent of ribbed astronaut gloves.

As a homage to the rich history & the farthest human-made object in space, the Xeric NASA Voyager Automatic 100ATM Diver, is a limited edition timepiece that reminds us of the value of exploration.

Ever since I could remember I’ve been fascinated by space and space travel. All I wanted to be was a NASA astronaut, but alas, that never eventuated.

My love of the cosmos hasn’t diminished over the years, if anything, it has gotten stronger, with streaming services making a myriad of astronomy based documentaries available on demand – which I consume with wild abandonment.

That unrestrained impulsiveness and enthusiasm for all things space related has now permeated other stuff I like, wristwatches! When I first gazed at the Xeric NASA Voyager Automatic watch on Kickstarter, I didn’t need much convincing to put in my pledge and snag one of only 1977 watches that pay homage to the rich history and the farthest human-made object in space, NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2, launched almost 46 years ago (in 1977). As Xeric offered (and still offers) nine variations of the NASA Voyager, all named after celestial bodies, my only problem was which one to choose?!

I must admit, I would have loved every singe variation of the watch, but alas, my lotto numbers never came up! I chose the ‘Ganymede’ NASA Voyager watch purely based on the fact that it represented the biggest moon in our solar system and that the metallic look reminded me of the Voyager vessel, complete with the awesome orange accents on the second, hour and minute hand – if you look closely, it does strike a resemblance to NASA’s interstellar traveler. Oh yeah, the NASA ‘worm’ logo on the dial and amazing lume (Super LumiNova) just top off a very robust diver’s watch. But wait, there is more! The caseback features an inlaid replica of “the Golden Record” cover which is found on the outside of the Voyager spacecraft, intended to communicate a story of our world to any intelligent life it could encounter in its journey – the detail is next level cool.

The watch is powered by the self-winding Seiko NH38 automatic movement. As you wear it, the rotor winds the mainspring, creating stored mechanical energy that powers the watch. The movement is housed in a robust stainless steel case complete with a tactile 120-click rotating bezel fit for divers. The watch may look hefty, but it honestly sit quite nice and comfortable on my 7″ wrist. Since this is a divers watch, it has a 1,000 metre depth rating, with an integrated helium escape valve built into the side casing, preventing a pressure differential that can occur during deep dives.

Wearing this watch is such a pleasure, thanks to the custom two-tone ribbed silicone strap – it just feels really good on the wrist without a sweat in sight. If you are clumsy, then rest assured that the 4mm thick sapphire glass (with anti-reflective coating) can withstand every day knocks.

The Xeric NASA Voyager Automatic is a special watch, not only due to its limited release (1977 pcs) but the fact that its unique design fuses and celebrates two things many of us love, space and watches. Watch Review: Xeric NASA Apollo 15 American Automatic

U.S.-based Xeric watches has been rather prolific over the last few years with a variety of designs. This particular model — the NASA Apollo 15 American Automatic — is interesting and fun to wear and comes in a variety of colors, including this “Interstellar” version in natural steel with a black “space” dial. This is the first Xeric watch I have reviewed despite the fact that I’ve known the owner since the brand’s inception. Xeric is operated by the Greenblatt family that operates the watch retail website watches.com. Mitch Greenblatt was an early watch blogger who wrote about discussion-worthy timepieces from his Watchismo Blogspot website back around 2005, or so, and his site helped inspired aBlogtoWatch.com.

NASA has a policy that its logo can be used (with permission, of course), sans any licensing cost, as part of a larger program to help re-popularize the American space program (because we need more people educated in the skills necessary to run it). This has led to a really massive proliferation of products (mostly in fashion) with the NASA logo on it. Watches are no exception, but what is interesting is how the NASA theme is incorporated into the product.

For several years now, Xeric has been experimenting with a “space view” theme dial within its Trappist case collection (see this aBlogtoWatch post for example) . Finally, the collection dropped the no-longer-relevant beer theme and adopted the NASA vibe for an appropriate context for the overall design. The visual concept behind the watch is as though you are in a space capsule looking out into space. The matrix over the dial is meant to represent a window array and space on the other side. The hour and minute hands have large circular sections filled with lume. These are meant to look like stars or planetary bodies moving against a galactic backdrop.

Xeric uses a multi-spring seconds hand with dots of lume on it meant to represent stars. Always seeing movement on the dial is a key part of the intended theme and the “constellation” seconds hand is a fun touch that nicely advances that theme. This is also among the cleaner dials of this style that Xeric has created. Mitch experimented with other versions of this watch, including those with tritium case tube hands. In addition to this automatic version is also a quartz-based version that has the added complication of a moon phase indicator.

There is a common sentiment among American watch brands that, to their chagrin, getting all the necessary parts made in America is very challenging, in many instances impossible if you want to manufacture a movement in the United States. This is especially true when it comes to any type of volume production. An artisan working alone or with a small team can make a few watches by hand per year anywhere in the world. Producing several hundred, thousand, or more watches per year industrially requires an infrastructure that is only slowly re-emerging in the United States. How far it will go is yet to be seen. The existence of a facility outside of Phoenix is an interesting development and is responsible for “American Assembled” movements know here as “AmeriChron.”

Matched to the case is an American Horween leather strap with horizontal quilting that seems appropriate with the retro spacey theme. For anyone who loves astronomy, the space program, science fiction, or just funky watches, these are highly evolved designs that satisfactorily deliver on a promised theme in a unique way that you really haven’t seen from any other watches before. To his credit, Mitch Greenblatt has followed his own high standards for design and not become a regurgitative creator who simply slaps a new coat of paint onto existing things. Greenblatt is a creative at heart who wants to add his own two cents into the pantheon of watch design. This is a decidedly non-commercial approach to watch design (it also probably describes my own habits as a wristwatch product creative director); for him to succeed, he needs to nurture a large enough community of fans who will support him. This is, in essence, what all watch brands need to first survive, then also thrive.

What you see in the NASA Apollo 15 American Automatic watches — and many other timepieces produced by American-based enthusiasts — is a sincere desire to create a home-grown product. I have no immediate comment on the long-term viability of wristwatch component manufacturing industry in America, but I know that the natural tendency of watchmakers here is to “buy local first.” I imagine it is probably the same way in Germany, Switzerland, France, England, and Japan.

On the wrist, the NASA Apollo 15 American Automatic is decently comfortable and I like that Greenblatt really restrained himself for a more elegant concept that is starting to feel a bit more universal in appeal. This is very much still a niche product, but it is an excellent conversation piece and has a story that most any audience can understand.
