After Rihanna played Wembley Stadium, the gig went semi-viral online. Not because someone proposed during “Umbrella” or because the singer was in emotional tears onstage, but because the “sold out” stadium was half empty.

A huge number of seats at the 90,000-capacity stadium were left empty throughout the gig thanks to touts buying up tickets and failing to sell them on for extortionate prices, according to The Mirror .

It is thought some tickets for the Anti world tour were sold for huge markups on second-hand websites, while those not fetching the huge prices went unused, leading to the empty seats.

This isn’t the first case of empty seats thanks to touts: tickets to the Harry Potter West End show, The Cursed Child , went unsold after appearing online for £2,000 plus .

Many artists, including Adele , have been attempting to tackle touts head-on, but tickets almost always end up finding their way online. Mumford & Sons tour manager Adam Tudhope told the tabloid, “We work hard to make the face value of the ticket as accessible to as many of the fans as possible

“So there’s nothing worse for the band playing a ‘sold-out’ show than looking out at empty seats because touts bought the tickets and tried to sell them on secondary sites at massively inflated prices.”

Recently, Ticketmaster’s ex-CEO revealed why it is so hard to get tickets to the biggest gigs , blaming touts and how they’re constantly finding ways to be the first to buy tickets.

Yikes! The Weeknd Waves Goodbye To Rihanna’s ‘ANTI Tour’

Already marred by accusations of empty seats and emptier performances, Rihanna ‘s ‘ANTI Tour’ was another devastating blow moments ago.

Chart-topper The Weeknd has dropped out from the international leg of the trek – before the first show.

Details below…

A freshly issued statement from promoter Live Nation read:

Due to some unforeseen changes with upcoming projects, The Weeknd will no longer be joining Rihanna on her upcoming international Anti World Tour. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('primis_TGJ_1x1_Desk'); if (pubwise.enabled === true) { pwpbjs.que.push(function () { pwRegisterLazyLoad(gptadslots['primis_TGJ_1x1_Desk'], 2, [250,0,250,0], 0, 768, 2); }); }else{ googletag.pubads().refresh([gptadslots['primis_TGJ_1x1_Desk']]); } });

What exactly that’s supposed to mean is anyone’s guess. But what is certain is that it’s not a good look – for all involved.

For The Weeknd, he’s disposed of what little exposure he’d receive from the those actually in attendance – and disappoints his own fans who paid to see him.

As for Rih, it’s yet another spanner in the works for a tour that was  struggling to sell-out  with her name on the bill, as well as that of Big Sean and The Weeknd.

What empty seats? LOOOOOL Chile this blog stays on Rihanna’s vag 24/7.

' src=

Rih dont need his gaay asss anyway ?????

' src=

Can TGJ post a link of reports that the tour is struggling? and i’m not talking about second market tickets, cuz if i buy a ticket for a sold out tour and then sell it, that doesn’t not mean the tour isn’t sold out.

And didn’t TGJ say the same thing about the LOUD and Diamonds world tour? And then LOUD pulled in 90 million and Diamonds 140 million?

' src=

lol– you should just ignore the reports. they make these claims EVERY year that Rihanna goes on tour. Remember when Sam said: “Now playing stadiums, Rih is not only throwing down the gauntlet to many of her female chart rivals, she’s also throwing it down to herself. She has six months and some change to pack-out such-sized venues – which requires that she convince more than her loyal Navy to show up and show out. The latter being what she’ll have to do during the period preceding the show if she doesn’t want to be left with egg on her model-esque face. Interestingly, her “eras” usually last six months, hence it’ll be super-interesting to see how she manages this feat.”

But as we all know, Diamonds went on to become the 5th largest (2nd by a female. Pink was #1) tour of 2013. The tour grossed $137,982,530 (USD) from 87 shows (85 of which were sold out) according to Billboard magazine.

' src=

Navy until we stop coming to this blog and show Sam no one have time for his bias foolishness bullying mentality this dragging and disrespect will stop check all the other post he gets way less hits I’m done after today it’s getting ridiculous then you have the pathetic hives running over rih fan page

' src=

Maybe he’s going on his own tour.

' src=

Exactly!! Why would the weekend be a back up performer.. He can headline his own tour. The weeknd had a successful album & singles. Why would he two step for someone else!?

Agreed. He’s had a successful year, won big at the Grammy’s so this was probably planned immediately after.

Rihanna’s fans and The Weeknd’s fans aren’t aligned anyway so no one will be bothered by this.

' src=

But in the end the general public only knows Earned It and Can’t Feel My Face, going on a world tour in that position is risky, I mean look at Gotye a few years ago or Iggy. Maybe a world tour in smaller venues would be great for him, but not an arena tour

' src=

That makes so much sense

' src=

But why does he let me pay for it if he wouldn’t tour with Rihanna anyway? I can’t get a refund. Everybody and his mom try to sell their tickets Now. Money is lost. Scammer

' src=

i bet sam could draw me a very detailed picture of what rihanna’s v***** looks like

' src=

Lmfao I am screaming!’ Get him navy!

' src=

We all could @swish

' src=

Anyone can draw a good picture of a battlefield without seeing it first hand. I’m sure Sam is no different.

' src=

Kii expect rihfunds happening lmfaooo

' src=

Damn. Kiss It Better ft The Weekend is out the picture now.

' src=

No it isn’t dunce! It can still be released! He doesn’t have to attend the tour for that. Plus I rather Miguel feature then him.

' src=

If I was the weeknd I would have dropped out the tour to. At this time he’s just as relevant as she is and running up behind her ain’t gaining him nothing !

' src=

The fvck? The Weeknd and Rihanna are in no comparison whatsoever, and I’ve been a fan of the Weekend for 5 years now since HOB. Rihanna has a fan base that has been cultivated for over 10 years. Plus, she is the only artist who’s more popular in Europe than in the US.

The disparity of this blog to put Rihanna down. While the entire reason of why the Weeknd pulled out is unsure, he is pressured in making new music that needs to be ready for a full launch this summer.

This is a massive scam! We paid to see Grammy winner The Weeknd. There is no way to get a refund. Not even a replacement act has been announced. I paid more than 170€ for two tickets to see The Weeknd! What a scam!

No show has had empty seats! It’s a reach! And nobody is coming to see him. I went to the dc show yesterday! Nobody cared for Travis! I mean he had the crowd moving and prepped up but! Nothing compared to when Rihanba came out. I don’t see how the weekend would be a good fit anyways! I don’t see him moving a crowd and getting them hype for Rihanna. I don’t see why you guys insist on lying and then acting like the weekend pulled ticket sales ???. His fame is dying out that’s why his as bailed. He would have been on stage and the audience would have been all crickets. She don’t need both big Sean and the weekend

When I went to the show in Miami, Travis’s set was empty. Having to sit through his opening set killed my high.

Yep! I mean the arena was filled when her performed, but the only song they were really hype to was antidote, and some other song I ain’t know. but the moment Rihanna stepped out, I was right behind first stage, the crowd was roaring!!!!!!! I do t see the weekend not big Sean pulling the crowd in like she does! With just her appearance. I mean Travis Scott needed a hype man before he got on???. Rih could have did this alone. I don’t think no one cares for the weekend and or big Sean.

' src=

She needs to get Drake he better anyway Weekend who?

I heard he was not going to be opening for her months before the tour started why is this Johnny come late ass news pathetic Sam rih is paying your bills without her no,one comes to this blog but 10 people and why is rih helping Kanye West artist’s to open her show she do not need these bammers

' src=

Drake is too big of a star to be falling behind Rihanna, he can headline his OWN tour & his album comes out next month which is going to sell like crazy he don’t need her & nor does she need him

She needs Drake to replace Grammy winner The Weeknd in Europe. Otherwise this is going to be a massive scam!

At this point I think it’s his loss. The exposure would have been good. He probably started smelling himself and figured he wouldn’t open for her. She doesn’t have issues in the uk at all. I’m sure very few to a little will be upset about it. He ready cancelled from two tours before it started, so this doesn’t come as a surprise.

I’m going to need rih and her lawyers send Sam a letter about lies they keep printing enough is enough that’s why b***** keeps winning this blog is bias I’m happy people

' src=

Good! I was never here for him and his music. Hopefully Rihanna can add Jungle and/or George Ezra to her European leg of the tour.

' src=

You listen to Jungle? ?

Oh then there’s Ella Henderson and Shift K3Y. There’s so many great artist in the UK. There’s so many to choose from.

' src=

Oh well he needed that audience tho.

' src=

kiii . Tinashe teas on that iggy tour . lmfao it would be a whole lot of kii’s if he would go open for Formation World Tour . just like Tinashe left Iggy for Nicki

' src=

The shade was redundant and transparent. Anyway no one will miss him as most wasn’t really too much here for him anyway.

' src=

you said TTT sold 4m WW on the last fRih post . care to provide receipts? . that album fell off the charts at 3.7-3.8 mili WW and has never been on any chart since

Why open for someone else when you can have your own tour? At this rate He is bigger than Rihanna. Don’t be like Ciara who could have had her own tour but opted to open for a girl who was still fresh and new

Bigger than Rihanna???. The delusion honey!

Weeknd lets me pay to see him. Then he realized he could have his own tour? Why should he open for Rihanna if he can play his own tour? Don’t know, maybe because his fans paid for it? At least we should be allowed to return our tickets!

' src=

Thats horrible he should’ve been on the American tour anyway.

THE TITANIC HAS OFFICIALLY SUNK! !!!!!!!!!

at this point The Weekend > Rihanna. Grammys, Top Tens and Album which outsold ANTiSuccess . why would he tour with a flopping bxtch?

' src=

You are so bitter honey it’s sick

Because he got his fans pay for it?

The Weekend’s last era >>>>>>> ANTiSuccess . and yet marijuana doesn’t need him??? . Howwwwwww?????? . after she flopped the whole year (2015) and covered free magazines to generate buzz?????? . BYEEEEEEEE FEEEEEEEELLLLIIICIIIIIIAAAAAA!!!!!!!

there’s some people who are cursed . they join your fanbase and suddenly your fave becomes flop . *looks at the Salvation Army Nazi’s and smiles*

4 Separate posts oh where do you find the time

' src=

OK..and ? He’s a supporting act

The people are there to see Rih

No. He never has been on tour over here. His face is shown on the ticket. A lot of people bought a ticket just to see him. Those who bought a ticket to see him are screwed.

Comparing The Weeknd and Rihannas success is absolutely hilarious… Rihanna has payed her dues in this industry. Shes shown she has longevity. The Weeknd has only been mainstream for about a year so stop.

' src=

The same way you compare Beyonce to Ciara lmao.

' src=

No lie, Sam stay ragging Rihanna but it’s low key promo. I’ve always enjoyed her music but the last album and Sam constant gripe fest motioned me to finally see her live. To my surprise, it was really good. Some of my surprised pleasure may be due to hearing so much bad stuff about her live shows. Her vocals were good. She sound like her songs. She’s no major vocalist but as I always thought … If Rih wanted to be one she could. Her tone and vocal texture is so unique and cool! The woman has the favor of God all over her; however, her persona/brand isn’t like the Whitneys/Bey/Mariahs… She’s a hip/ rock star. The whole nonchalant…urban /black new age hippy is her thing and it WORKS. Clearly she can dance and could’ve chose to hit her choreo hard but she sat in it and had this artistic/ (I hate to say it) druggy dance vibe and it WORKED!/lol.

It was a really cool and creative show. The energy was awesome. Again, she sound good. Not the best singer alive but deserving of a record deal and her current fam. She danced. She rocked the stage. She’s drew us in. She connected with us. The gear was forward fashion. I can safely say I am officially a supporter. I feel comfortable with spending money on her. Wow! This is a moment.lol. There’s Bey and then there’s Rih. The two top performers of our age. Congrats Rih. Just please become more intentional with vocal practice. The day this girl smash some runs and riffs on a song with no music… It’s over for a few. Mark my words.

' src=

I didn’t know that The Weeknd would still be serving Ciara opening act tease when he is such a big star. Good on him!

' src=

She probably realized he can’t perform live and is over rated… There’s no loss for Rih because her album is still number 1 and her single is number 1….DUH

' src=

As if she can perform live…

' src=

Lol, shiid, cuz I was about to say she probably like: “It can’t be two of us up here now, so you gots to go!

King Abel>>>>> freeanna

Some boiling hot tea for yall , Nashville, Tennessee|Nashville Bridgestone Arena 1415,254287 / 15,287 $990,047

Lmao wait 14,254 / 15,287

' src=

I’m confused thought it was sold out??

If those numbers are really true then almost 1 million from one show is a good sign yes Rih!

They said UNFORESEEN changes lol. smh. Well, that really hints at some struggling going on and I doubt it’s on his end because even though I’m not into him really, he’s really what’s popping right now. And I could imagine a lot of people solely wanting to see him. I bet she’s at the point of dreading this era tour wise. ..

He is not popping. Only two songs of his were hits. That wave crashed months ago! Nobody is all rave over him not is he trending on any scale or accord. It’s all on his end. He probably is working on a follow up album or his own tour. Has nothing to do with Rih or her side. I’m sure his segment will be replaced by someone better or it will give her the opportunity to showcase the talents of her dancers or band.

' src=

That’s fine! She still has Big Sean, anyway. She was only trying to help Abel perform in stadiums to get that experience, but that probably wouldn’t have been the best idea since their only filling the stadiums for HER. Sean is more than enough for Europe, so let the show go on!

So The Weeknd has one successful era, or should I say successful singles, and suddenly he’s on Rihanna’s level? LOL. Ya’ll need to try harder. The boy doesn’t have 1/4 of Rihanna’s success, impact, influence or celebrity status, necessary enough to make him a successful touring act. | Beyonce and Rihanna, back in the 2000s when they were getting #1s singles and multi-platinum albums, were failing to sell-out arenas. If indeed he is embarking on his own tour as big as Rihanna’s and doing arenas and staduims, then good luck to him.

Come on, please! Is Abel all that AND the bag of chips? Please! Drake and Meek are more successful and attractive than him. Let Abel have a seat and go find his vocals, cause they clearly run away whenever he performs.

Rihanna only has 1 multi platinum album in her whole career but nice try with the plural though. Beyonce has 4 multi platinum albums out of 5.

LMAO. Typical RoachHive and their fūcked up logic. I was speaking in context of both ladies. Both Rihanna and Beyonce had a multi-platinum album and #1s singles in 2000s. Beyonce has absolutely none this decade. Try taking some Omega 3 pills. It might help with brain development.

Beyonce does have a multi platinum album this decade.

' src=

Why is Sam lying? What empty seats. ALL of her shows have been sold out so far…. And ain’t nobody bought a ticket to see The Weekend the UK.. LOL!! Big Sean is more enjoyable, so it makes sense from the beginning for him to be the only opener

“You know I got that sauce. You know um saucy, and it’s always wet. A b**** never ever had to use lupgloss on it. I’m a need you deeper than six, bot a coffin.” ______________________________

Are you deeper than six, Abel? I think not! ? Sorry, boo! You ain’t ready for Rih’s Stadium status yet! Fill out some arenas first with those weak ass, struggling vocals of yours. You can’t be scared to do the high notes and avoid them during the Grammy’s, yet you wanna perform for stadiums. Goodbye! ?

People always hate on her tours and she proves them wrong every times she’s in the top 10 touring acts of all time gross for female artists and only the second black female at that!

Fans have been posting videos of the tour showing the arenas have been filled

Diamonds was especially beautiful with lights being illuminated from the entire arena

She just added a stadium date in Romania for 50k seats

All Germany and Italy stadiums have been sold out and shes generating at least a mill for all her shows so far in the U.S

While y’all are hating on her she’s banking get over this tired tour shade

And please navy enough with the tired Formation shade aswell!

They think I’m playing. I’m expecting at least $3,000,000 for each Stadium show and a final tour gross over $200,000,000, so they can finally stop trying to drag her for not getting over that hump. She already got Taylor pissed with the amount of stadiums she’s playing this tour, so what do you expect? You know?

Lord have mercy @ this level of delusion.

' src=

False. The first reported show was sub million.

…and she just added an extra show in Europe, yet she’s failing to sell tickets. Chile, cheese!!!!!!! ? You don’t go from selling out stadiums year after year to barely filling out arenas. It literally makes no sense. ??

' src=

Cuz he has talent

' src=

What is The Weeknd’s talent? LOOOOOL Go stream your flop faves flop single performed to a 100 million people. Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100: #7(-1) Formation, @Beyonce [5 weeks]. *peak #4* Maybe Samsung can stream it for her so it can chart ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

First official receipt from Billboard Boxscore:

#11-Rihanna- Nashville TN (14254/15287)

Navy needs to take one of the 1000 plus empty seats. On this same chart Adele sold out 4 shows and had 7x the receipts. Drowned navy. Bye!

LMAO she can’t even sell out a 15k arena now.

' src=

Her concert in DC last night was amazing. I was actually shocked at how good it was. She really Slayed my life. Oh, SOLD OUT also

Yes it was !!!

Well when your expectation are somewhere inside Earth’s core, her having a pulse and being capable of standing there will impress you.

This was embarrassingly and awfully bad coming from a Mariah stan who has absolutely no stage presence and stands in one area for almost the entirety of a concert. ?

And miss piggy still can’t hold a note. In the studio or on stage anymore. Sit back baby!

' src=

I was wondering which act she would drop to make room for who I think is coming.

This site is beyond pathetic, when she adds the other performer make sure you report it with the same gusto.

PS is the weekend part of that OVO crew/or affiliated with Drake in anyway

Drake would be the only worthy replacement act, yes. However – ain’t gonna happen.

' src=

I’m back, h***! Did y’all petty ass b****** miss me? Where the f*** are those raggedy ass b****** Banks and Annalise at? I see Molly the maid is still kissing ass for the life of her stupid ass! Trolling and switching faves every month, as usual.

Don’t blame him. The whole era is an epic flop no matter what spin the Navy try to put on it.

' src=

That guy is a bore anyway. He can P1ss right off and I dont even stan for Rihanna like that.

Love WORK though yaasss

' src=

Sam needs to find himself some p**** cause all this Rihanna hating is getting boring now.

' src=

Death at the Navi still lying up and down this post about “$old Owt” when another poster literally copied and pasted the receipt from Billboard which said 1/0 and got downvoted to oblivion. Lets not get into that sub-million gross. His own grosses on the same report were better.

Ok girl! Weekend was #9 with less tix sold (but sold out) meaning that they downgraded the price of FRIHS tickets and STILL couldn’t sell out. Not a good look.

Of course Rihanna’s tour is flopping. If people want to see a waving tube man sit on a stage and pretend to sing, they can just go stand outside a T-Mobile store.

Who has two multi-platinum albums and will soon have three under her belt as the reigning queen of digital music?

Beyonce and Rihanna tours: Empty seats at Wembley Stadium blamed on ticket tout scams

Rihanna brought anti world tour to wembley on 24 june while beyonce played two dates at venue in july..

Alicia Adejobi Senior Entertainment Reporter

Beyonce and Rihanna can breathe a sigh of relief as the real reason for empty seats at their recent Wembley Stadium shows has been uncovered. Fans at the pop stars' respective Formation and Anti tour shows were surprised to see vacant areas at the sold-out concerts but it appears the tours have fallen victim to a scam.

Rihanna, 28, brought her 75-date world tour to the iconic London venue on 24 June 2016 while Beyonce, 34, headlined two nights on 2 and 3 July . Although both shows were advertised as being completely sold-out, concert-goers took photos of the empty seats and posted them on social media with captions including: "The Rihanna concert looked so empty. Embarrassingly empty," while another suggested the singer should have performed at the smaller Wembley Arena nearby.

However, The Mirror claims that ticket touts had purchased large bulks of the tickets to sell on the secondary marketplace meaning legit ticket buyers were led to believe the shows were sold-out at the 90,000 capacity stadium.

Adam Tudhope, manager of group Mumford & Sons, addressed the issue telling the publication: "We work hard to make the face value of the ticket as accessible to as many of the fans as possible. So there's nothing worse for the band playing a 'sold-out' show than looking out at empty seats because touts bought the tickets and tried to sell them on secondary sites at massively inflated prices."

Ticket touts and the secondary marketplace are becoming increasingly problematic for the touring industry. Fans are left feeling disheartened when tickets sell-out quickly on vendors such as Ticketmaster only to then find them selling up more than double the price on secondary sites like Viagogo and Seatwave.

Defending these alternative websites, chief commercial officer at live event ticket marketplace ScoreBig David Marcus, previously told IBTimes UK : "[The secondary market] is generally safe. It is in the interests of the resale sites to deliver valid tickets to their buyers and do their best to ensure that buyers have a great experience from purchase until they walk through the gate of the venue.

And yet no actual pictures or videos of an empty seat while Beyoncé was on stage! @rihweready pic.twitter.com/zXUo1agmAX — Will (@BADDlEWILL) July 4, 2016

"Occasionally [single digit percentage], unscrupulous sellers list tickets they have already sold, or technology/communication delays result in 'double sales' of the same ticket. But this is increasingly rare, especially as the secondary ticket market becomes more and more mainstream."

Although some may have fallen victim to ticket tout scams, many concert-goers who had attended Beyonce's Wembley shows argued the empty seats were filled once the singer arrived on-stage. One tweeted in regards to the media: "Taking pictures half an hour before she comes on for a show she came on half an hour early for to make your story?" while another said: "And yet no actual pictures or videos of an empty seat while Beyoncé was on stage!"

Beyonce's Formation world tour continues with a show in Glasgow, Scotland on 7 July, the same night Rihanna performs her next Anti world tour show in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Rihanna’s Anti Tour: Subdued, but Still Ready to Party

anti tour empty

“My band is ugly as shit,” Rihanna mused during a break between songs at Sunday night’s Anti World Tour stop at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. “They know that, though. Luckily they can play some good-ass instruments.”

Rihanna is one of very few people on this planet who could call you ugly and it would somehow come off like a great compliment. Consider how cool you’d have to be for Rihanna to feel comfortable casually teasing you in front of thousands of people: that she is acknowledging you at all is paramount to anything else.

Rihanna’s “don’t give a fuck” persona has been written about extensively in recent years, ever since her somewhat darker 2012 album, Unapologetic , which was followed by a few years during which she was most visible to the public on her Instagram account, where her life seemed an impossibly chill collection of parties and galavanting with friends and vacations. She took quite some time (by her own standards) to release her follow-up, Anti , which represented a pretty significant departure from her previous collections. As we wrote when it came out in January, Anti is a “Sunday-afternoon album,” as opposed to an out-on-a-Friday-night or treadmill album. It’s soulful and hazy and, while there are definitely standouts, there are not the obvious “bangers” that her previous seven albums featured (save for straight-up smash first single “Work,” which has spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard singles chart). It was as though Rihanna was saying, with Anti , “I’ve already conquered the singles game; I want to put out a piece of cohesive art now,” and then went ahead and put out the Rihanna version of that, which has its slightly middling patches, but ultimately sounds—in its rawness and grit—like an Exactly the Album This Artist Wanted to Make album.

Image may contain Human Person Stage Dance Pose Leisure Activities and Crowd

So it’s fitting that the corresponding tour for this “new era”—as she referred to it during the show—is one that feels minimalist and stripped down: less Pop Star, and more Mature Artist (Mature Artist Who Still Has a Penchant for Partying, that is). There was little in the way of set design or visual elements. The 28-year-old emerged from a white structure in the center of the arena at the beginning of the night (opening with the ballad “Stay,” off of Unapologetic , setting the tone for the staid-by-Rihanna-standards evening). She wore an oversize white coat—hood on—one of several cloaked, draped outfits she cycled through over the course of the night, all of which looked egregiously comfortable, and which gave her the appearance of being (the most fashionable version of) A Woman on Her Way to a Party in the Middle of a Blizzard.

She eventually made her way across a walkway—while performing “Pose,” an Anti bonus track, and one of the more rollicking songs on the record—vamping and preening. Once she reached the end of the walkway, and decamped for the stage, she remained there for the rest of the night. The aesthetic—the monochromatic leisure-wear clothing, and the sparse stage (two tarps were visible for the entire night, deflated on either side)—definitely evoked Kanye West’s Yeezy Season collections. For the most part, she sprinted through her prior hits, not giving the (spirited) audience much time to live with any of them. During a section in the middle, she performed a sequence of buoyant older jams (“Live Your Life,” “Run This Town,” “All of the Lights,” “Umbrella”) and she joyously danced, skipped, and spun around the stage, singing some, but seeming more like the Platonic Ideal of how one should move their body and bliss out to a Rihanna song—which, of course, makes sense, since she is Rihanna. Watching her be Rihanna is a delight like watching a supermodel strut or an athlete dunk—it’s regarding a triumph.

If Rihanna seemed to rush through some of her songs (the entire set was just under 90 minutes), she definitely, unsurprisingly, luxuriated most in the new Anti songs. Many of them—“Needed Me,” “Consideration”—came alive more in the live setting than they do on the album, perhaps due to Rihanna’s evident passion in selling them. “Work” was a bit of a missed opportunity, sandwiched into the middle of one of the sections and absent the Drake verse, but I would be lying if I said the woman in front of me did not turn around bemused as I wailed and flailed along to it, so it’s hard to say the rendition wasn’t wholly transformative. Her decision to close the show with Anti standout— but mid-tempo—“Kiss It Better” seemed indicative of her intentions for the night.

Armageddon, but with Singing: Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon Face The End

As much as we all would love to spend a weekend partying with Rihanna in a remote beach house somewhere, she is, more than pretty much any other current celebrity, completely inaccessible, as if the colors she sees are completely different ones from the ones we see. In a strange way, even though music obviously made her famous and she is thriving as much as ever, her album output can sometimes seem beneath her, in the way that Keeping Up with the Kardashians has started to seem beneath Kim Kardashian as she has become more globally prominent. The music, or the reality show, seems increasingly an afterthought in light of the ever-growing personality . The main accomplishment Sunday night, all elements considered, would seem to be delivering Rihanna, the persona and the personality, to an audience of ecstatic fans.

During one of the breaks to talk to the audience, Rihanna criticized her front row for their lack of enthusiasm (“Y’all’s shit is mad expensive. Y’all don’t feel like you’re getting your money’s worth?”) which, again, just made me jealous Rihanna wasn’t lambasting me . Later, saying her good-byes, she reflected, in response to the crowd’s disappointment at the concert’s ending, “I want to stay out here with you guys, too. I ran out of DVDs to watch on the bus. It ain’t shit out there. This right here, this is my shit.” She launched into her next song, and, after gazing at her transfixedly for about a minute as she belted “Love on the Brain” in a loose, mustard-colored ensemble, I turned to my friend. “I want that coat,” I said. He nodded in agreement.

Rihanna Kicked Off Her ANTI Tour Last Night and It Was Epic

Last night, Rihanna kicked off her ANTI Tour in Jacksonville, Florida and it was even more incredible than we could've anticipated.

According to a review by the Florida Times Union , there was a giant shower curtain dripping with 10-foot-tall foam soap bubbles, a flying bridge and an acrobatic dance corps. "Rihanna's show is slick and heavily produced and choreographed down to the last move. It's also entertaining as all get-out." See:

After canceling the first seven cities of the tour due to production delays, RiRi really brought it all to the stage—and her wardrobe was no exception. Changing through at least half a dozen different outfits during the 90-minute show, the singer's signature daring, edgy style was in full force.

One look featured thigh-high boots that belted around her waist.

Another, a sheer black jumpsuit covered in beaded fringe.

Sometimes with a massive black cloak worn over it:

Then there was the lace-up bodysuit that extended into Giuseppe Zanotti custom-made chap boots.…

The slouchy olive suit worn over a leather bustier...

…and the oversized sporty jacket—a Rihanna staple.

This fan's reaction is the only appropriate reaction to have right now:

Here's a peek at a few of RiRi's performances—just to hold you over until she hits a city near you :

RIHANNA's performance at Wembley Stadium last night shocked fans as the singer failed to fill seats.

The Work singer shocked her fans with the lack of people at the gig, and many people took to Twitter to share pictures of the empty stadium.

The stadium had even released extra tickets of a section of seats behind the stage, however the seats remained shockingly empty.

Even the standing area – which Rihanna usually easily sells out – showed clearly empty spaces.

Tickets for the West London gig were on general sale for between £75 and £130 each.

One Twitter user who attended the gig said: "Rihanna was lots of fun. It was… rather empty. But lots of fun."

Another said: "Rihanna should have played Wembley Arena (20k) instead. Wembley stadium is gigantic. 2nd largest stadium in Europe. They were too ambitious."

While another commented: "Rihanna concert looking mad dead, how did her management let all them empty seats go to waste?"

As well as this, fans were left disappointed with Rihanna's performance, with a source telling The Mirror: "She rushed through the songs and everything was double the tempo.

"There were 10 minute dance breaks where she went off stage and nobody knew what is going on."

The shocking lack of attendees comes just days after Rihanna broke down in tears during an emotional rendition of Love The Way You Lie.

Performing in Dublin, the 28-year-old turned away from cameras as tears streamed down her face, however was encouraged by fans to continue singing.

The world's revolt against 'bad tourists'

anti tour empty

As Ibiza and Mallorca say no to tourists coming to party, it's becoming increasingly clear that expectations on travellers in the world's most popular destinations are changing.

The message on banners during the Canary Islands' anti-tourist protests in April could not been any have been clearer: " Tourist: respect my land !" As peak travel season for the northern hemisphere approaches, so too does a rising tide of anti-tourist sentiment among locals in popular summer destinations. Similar protests have been seen in Barcelona , Athens , Málaga and other tourist-heavy cities in Europe.

As the recent rallies in the Canary Islands have highlighted, many residents in over-touristed places increasingly want a better type of tourist : one who respects local culture and nature, not one who drinks cheap beer on the beach and leaves their empty bottle behind with a cigarette butt stubbed in the sand.

Now, many destinations across the globe are becoming increasingly vocal about the kind of tourists they want on their streets – and the kind they don't. On the yes list: tourists who spend money in local shops, boost the local economy and behave respectfully. On the no list: boozy tourists – often Brits – who behave badly, disrespect local traditions and negatively affect local lives and lifestyles.

According to tourism researcher and Aalborg University professor Carina Ren, there have always been badly behaved tourists ; it's just that there are more of them now than ever.

"People on the move have always been seen as outsiders," she said. "Whenever we travel, there has been a cultural encounter where we exchange ideas and clash. It was true in the days of the Grand Tour and it's true of mass tourism too. But now something different is going on: volume. Tourists aren't behaving worse – there are just more of them."

Getty Images Venice has become the first city in the world to charge daytripper visitor fees (Credit: Getty Images)

This year already in Barcelona, local authorities have taken the unusual step of removing a bus route from Google Maps to stop tourists jumping on board, elbowing out elderly locals in the process. In Spain's Balearic Islands, renowned for nightlife destinations such as Ibiza and Magaluf, alcohol restrictions have come into force in a bid to regain control over its disorderly streets. In hotly visited Venice, tourist fees have begun for daytrippers to try to stem the flow of unending visitors. And Bali recently announced a new tourism levy after a series of incidents involving visitors desecrating holy sites and behaving disrespectfully.

As the post-pandemic recovery continues in the travel industry, increasing numbers of destinations are seeing tourism records being shattered . The World Travel and Tourism Council is predicting a record-breaking year for tourism in 2024; in Spain alone, which last year welcomed a record 85.1 million international visitors (up 19% on the previous year), even more visitors are expected through 2024. Tourism authorities are revelling in the travel boom that redresses the balance after the desperately lean pandemic years, but – as the clamour of local voices show – a tourism boom does not benefit everyone.

"The discussion isn't really about the right kind of tourist, it is about making sure that local people benefit from tourism," says Sebastian Zenker, an expert in overtourism and academic director of the Master in Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality Management at Copenhagen Business School. "If you look at the Canary Islands, I've read that a third of the population live on the edge of poverty. Tourism offers a big income to these islands – but for whom? It's not enough to say that we want to welcome well-behaved tourists who are quiet and spend more money, it's about where the money goes. At the moment, a large proportion of the population does not benefit."

He adds: "If locals can make a good living from it, if they can see infrastructure is being built from it that they can use, perhaps for a better price than tourists, then there can be a healthy coexistence for both."

The idea of the "right kind of tourist" is still alive and well in marketing. The world's tourism boards choose which types of people and which nationalities to market to, developing market segments that they see as the right kind of tourist for them. So you'll see Pure New Zealand campaigns focused on high-quality visitors who contribute to the country's natural environment ; Visit Iceland campaigns targeting fun-loving globetrotters and independent explorers , while Amsterdam has a renewed interest in cultural tourists and responsible tourism . It's a mark of how charged the situation has become that these discussions are now being held outside tourist organisation boardrooms and in streets and protests as well.

For Antje Martins, a trainer for the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and a PhD candidate in the tourism discipline at University of Queensland Business School, it's a question of better management, not a better type of tourist.

"When locals are blaming tourists for bad behaviour, it's not about the tourists," she said. "It's a sign that the tourism management has failed."

She raises a concern: if pressure is put on destinations to reduce the number of tourists they admit, it feels likely they could market just to richer travellers in a bid to retain high revenues, shutting the lower end out of the market. This approach was taken in New Zealand in 2020, but it fell flat: tourism researchers noted that there's no evidence to show that big spenders contribute more to the economy and, in fact, may well be worse for the environment, while local commentators found it elitist, snobby and out of touch.

More like this:

• Is this the summer of bad tourists?

• Palau's world-first 'good traveller' incentive

• How to be a better tourist

"I see travel as a force for good," Martins said. "We don't want to make it only possible for rich people to have these mind-opening experiences, but they need to be able to do it in a responsible way so we don't ruin the planet at the same time."

Lines are being stealthily drawn across the industry to shape a better kind of behaviour in all kinds of ways. Softer ideas, such as introducing a tourism pledge highlighting the kind of behaviour that's deemed acceptable in a location, have been around for a while.

Iceland, for example, has a pledge asking tourists to avoid driving off-road or going to the toilet in nature, among other things; in their pledge, the Pacific islands of Palau have a version written by the nation's children asking visitors to tread lightly and to preserve and protect their homeland.

Tougher interventions include tourism taxes, as seen in Venice. While a €5 daily fee is hard to see as much of a disincentive, other countries use this technique more boldly. Bhutan has had a daily tourist tax since 2019 which, at $100 per day, effectively acts as a break on the volume of tourists visiting and the length of their visit, but also shuts out those on a low budget. Limits on tourism numbers and capacities are also on their way: this year Amsterdam announced it wants to control the number of tourist beds available in the city by no longer building any more hotels , and it seems likely others will follow.

Zenker thinks there's another intervention we will see more of in the coming years: destinations actively telling certain types of people they are not welcome.

"I think we're going to see a lot more de-marketing in the years to come," he said, citing Amsterdam's 2023 "Stay Away" advertising campaign aimed at discouraging young British men, and stag parties in particular, from treating the city like a liberal party zone. "If you're Googling bachelor parties, then for the next two weeks you see these videos, saying: if you come here and you show nudity, you'll get arrested."

It's another way to shape desired behaviour and try to make sure the wrong kind of tourist stays away.

This spring's flashpoint issues – which are sure to continue through the peak summer period – feel like the start of something a lot bigger: change in the tourism industry. For Martins, it is absolutely necessary.

"If we're not managing the impact of tourism correctly, then we're actually killing the destination," she said. "We need to become sustainable as an industry because if we're not, then we won't have any product in the end left to sell."

"We have to travel with care, and make sure that these destinations can survive," she added. "Because in the end, for the people who live in the destinations, it is their home."

Waterparks – the anti-tour performance.

Written by:

The music industry as we know it has changed drastically, and artists are now desperate to find new ways to connect with their fans. With shows not feasible in most countries currently, live streams have become the new norm. Texas-bred band Waterparks are one of the latest to jump on the bandwagon, offering ticket and merch packages for a live stream on Saturday, March 27.

The hour-long show was a taste of normalcy, not only for the band themselves but also for their dedicated fanbase, who is so used to seeing the three-piece on the road. Following a short greeting by lead singer Awsten Knight (“what’s up, internet!”), Waterparks kicked off with what has been their opener since the release of 2019’s  Fandom , ‘Cherry Red’. It then led into ‘Watch What Happens Next’ — this should have come as no surprise to those who are familiar with Waterparks’ live sets, but it was a new experience all the same since the band were effectively performing to an empty room.

Despite Waterparks’ undeniable evolution over the years, watchers got a taste of the band’s more historic material, namely ‘Mad All The Time’, ‘Stupid For You’, and ‘Not Warriors’. These older offerings gave fans a chance to see just how much the band has grown but proved that equally, they haven’t forgotten where they’ve come from.

Midway through the set, guitarist Geoff Wigington and drummer Otto Wood left the “stage” and Knight performed the acoustic tracks ‘Lucky People’ and ’21 Questions’ on his own. This was an excellent way to break up the chaos, as these gentler songs are favorites among fans. The set design particularly complimented this section; soft, multicolored lighting and trees surrounding the area almost had us convinced this was an outdoor show!

While the set was predominantly made up of tracks from Fandom (including a live debut of ‘Telephone’ with the full band), but also included newer singles ‘Lowkey As Hell’ and ‘Snow Globe’, plus ‘Numb’ which has only been released this week. Waterparks have not yet been able to play any of these in front of an actual audience, so their fans went crazy on the web chat when they got to watch the band take them on live. Knight gave back just as much energy, pausing at all the right moments — i.e. where fans would scream back the lyrics — and keeping watchers motivated even though he couldn’t see or hear any of them.

The 16-song set was not followed by wild cheers from a packed-out audience, but the webchat showed that the online audience was more than satisfied with the experience and it will no doubt tide them over until they’re able to watch their favorite band in the flesh once more. They were also pleased to find out that ticket holders can rewatch the stream as many times as they like until Friday, April 16.

Waterparks’ new album Greatest Hits is available on May 21 via 300 Entertainment.

Rihanna Kicks Off Her ‘ANTI’ HEAT (Half Empty Arena Tour) in Jacksonville

Sandra Rose

After numerous delays and cancelations (due to slow ticket sales), washed up singer Rihanna kicked off her HEAT (Half Empty Arena Tour) in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday.

Thatgrapejuice.net reports that Rihanna sounded like “struggle and stress” on Saturday night. He added that Rihanna’s HEAT Tour is better suited for concert goers with hearing loss.

Rihanna’s HEAT tour is probably the first half empty arena tour by an artist in support of a flop album.

Thatgrapejuice.net — The Bajan sensation has much to make up to fans following the rockiest of roll-out’s for the trek and its housing album ‘ANTI.’ Hoping to right the well-documented wrongs, the 28-year-old journeyed through smashes such as ‘Diamonds’ and ‘Umbrella,’ as well as tackling newer numbers ala ‘Work’ and ‘Kiss It Better.’ Per the array of costumes, the production is unsurprisingly pleasing to the eye. What about the ear, though? Sadly, Rih once again sounded like struggle and stress, case in point the footage below.

Pro-Palestine protesters crash CNN anchor Dana Bash's book event: 'Harassment'

by JACKSON WALKER | The National Desk

WASHINGTON (TND) — Multiple pro-Palestine protesters on Thursday crashed a book tour event thrown by Jewish CNN anchor Dana Bash in Washington, D.C.

Bash was at Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington, D.C., to promote her new book “America’s Deadliest Election: The Cautionary Tale of the Most Violent Election in American History.” Video shared by her co-anchor, Jake Tapper, shows a masked protester berating Bash over her coverage of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

“You belong behind bars,” the demonstrator called. “We know who you are, we know what you’re saying. It’s not a war, it’s never been a war, it is ethnic cleansing.”

The protester continued shouting despite event organizers asking them to calm down.

Take your mask off,” Bash fired back as officers escorted the demonstrator out.

After the first protester left the building, another one took their place, again screaming at Bash over her coverage of the war.

You call yourself a good journalist?” the second protester called. “Report the truth. But instead you want millions from Zionists, you want millions from AIPAC.”

Members of the audience called out the protester, also encouraging them to remove their mask.

READ MORE | Trump warns Israel will 'no longer exist' if Harris wins

Tapper, who is also Jewish, took to X to condemn the demonstrators' actions.

“These protesters target Dana at her home and this event because she’s Jewish,” he wrote. “There is nothing about her coverage of the Israel-Hamas war that is different from most other news coverage, covering both Jewish/Israeli and Palestinian pain. This harassment is antisemitism.”

CNN did not respond to a request for comment from The National Desk (TND) regarding the incident prior to publication.

Democrats have been highly critical of the news outlet in the lead-up to the November presidential election. A slew of Democratic lawmakers and commentators expressed frustration in June over CNN moderators failing to "fact check" former President Donald Trump during the first presidential debate.

About The Weakerthans' Reunion Tour

Reunion Tour is another superb tome from indie rock's most singular narrators, The Weakerthans. The new album was recorded after-hours above a closed factory in the cold Canadian spring, weaving the frontier loneliness of the environment into rich lyrical yarns four years in the making. Songs such as "Sun in an Empty Room" and "Civil Twilight" tell of individual journeys with a melancholic empathy that Paste magazine has described as "songs of brutal beauty, little rock n roll vignettes that perfectly capture the malaise of the peculiar, disorienting times in which we live."
