What to Charge for Author Visits

As an author, I am sure you are hoping to schedule school visits or other book readings. And one question I receive from authors all the time is, “How much should I charge for an author visit?”

It’s a great question! And it probably won’t surprise you to know that there isn’t just one answer.

ben and claire to pay us a visit

How to Determine What to Charge for an Author Visit

When you are scheduling school author visits or other book readings, it’s important to have an understanding of payment options before the event.

I don’t have a standard fee for author visits. So how do I determine payment for my author visits?

I first ask the school or venue, "What is your budget for an author visit?" Usually, they will have something in mind and that helps me not over or under-price myself.

I’ve done author visits where I have been paid anything from $0-$250. Even if I am not receiving a payment, there are still ways that the school or venue can promote my book and make the visit financially successful.

4 Questions to Ask Before a Book Reading

Payment isn’t the only thing you should ask of a school or venue. Some other ways that I ask them to provide compensation or promote my books include:

Will they buy a set number of books for their school library or other location?

Will they send home backpack fliers or parent letters with my book info?

Will they send out a parent email/newsletter with my book info?

Will they post about my book on social media?

Remember, young people aren’t usually the ones who are going to buy your books. Getting information out to parents and caregivers is incredibly important!

And even if you don’t receive payment, I think it is still incredibly important to ask. It helps set the norm that schools and other venues should plan to pay authors for our time!

How have you handled author payments in the past? What do you charge for school author visits? Share in the comments!

Fresh water for an old boat; Oregon couple bring rebuilt vessel on 465-mile trip to Lewiston-Clarkston Valley

Much of what the 89-year-old Ben Claire did before 1989 is unknown to the vessel's latest owners.

But Franklin and Maxine McDowell suspect the boat never traveled in fresh water until last week when it made the 465-mile, seven-day journey from the mouth of the Columbia River to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley.

The Ben Claire was moored at Hells Canyon Resort last weekend in plain view of diners at Roosters Landing.

The boat is the oldest to dock at the resort in two years, said Jim Felton, project manager at the business.

"It's kind of like us,'' said, Franklin, 69, of Mehama, Ore. "We are antiques.''

For the McDowells the trip through the locks on the Snake and Columbia rivers was a bit of a novelty, something they'll be able to brag about to their boating friends.

Franklin is a retired mechanic and his wife, Maxine, 64, is a retired nurse. The two have owned boats for decades, but the Ben Claire is the biggest, oldest and one of the only boats they use for ocean cruises.

They first spotted the boat in Warrenton, Ore., a town close to Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River.

On subsequent visits they admired the vessel, called a double-ender because its bow and stern are shaped in Vs similar to a canoe.

When they saw a "for sale" sign perched outside it, they purchased the boat for $7,500.

"It needed us,'' Maxine said. "It was just sitting there rotting at the dock.''

That was 10 years ago. "It was in very poor condition,'' Maxine said. "The interior looked like a dark, dark cave.''

The exterior wasn't much better. "I wouldn't have wanted to take it out of the marina,'' Maxine said.

Franklin spent five years doing renovations. He didn't change the structural lines of the boat and kept the steering wheel.

Almost everything else has been updated. He covered the exterior with fiberglass to make the boat watertight.

The main entrance and an outside sitting area are at the stern. Light-colored pine paneling now covers the walls and ceiling of the main cabin where a galley, dining nook and sitting/sleeping area are located.

The pilot sits in an elevated room at the bow, surrounded by windows. A double bunk is tucked in a room underneath.

A four-cylinder Ford diesel motor powers the 47-foot long, 11-foot wide vessel. It cruises at 7 miles per hour.

The McDowells suspect they put $50,000 into the renovation. "We didn't keep track of the hours,'' Maxine said. "We didn't keep track of the money. We were afraid to.''

The Ben Claire has proven it was worth the investment by being tough in rough waters. "It rolls some, but it always rolls right back up again,'' Maxine said.

She remembers the time when they hit the wind and tide wrong in Canada. They took waves over the top of the boat for an entire day.

"I didn't do so well,'' Maxine said. "The boat did fine.''

Once the McDowells served as a support boat for Canadian tribes doing a canoe trip. Paddlers would rest and warm themselves in the boat. Sometimes they would pull canoes if entire crews grew too tired.

Along the way, the McDowells have gathered hints about the boat's history. The vessel has had several names. Ben Claire is what the boat was called when it entered the United States in the 1940s.

They once found a book that pictured vessels used to transport supplies to Canadian logging camps. The Ben Claire is similar, but its dimensions didn't match any of the craft listed.

Said Maxine, "I've never seen another just like it.''

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) -  On this edition of You Ask, We Answer, Randy asks if the City of Eau Claire has been paid back by visiting candidates from previous elections?

When candidates visit, it may mean a heavy public safety presence to ensure the safety of the candidates and the general public. Since 2016, Eau Claire has played host to Donald Trump, Mike Pence, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

Out of these visits, only two have incurred a significant cost to the city. In 2016 when Trump and Clinton visited the city, the cost to the taxpayers was in the thousands and so far neither invoice has been paid back.

Related:   Trump, Clinton still owe Eau Claire money after 2016 campaign

According to City of Eau Claire finance director Kitzie Winters, there is no legal obligation to pay the submitted invoices.

"There is no recourse on collecting on those," Winters said. "We hope they contribute out of their campaign funds to the additional transportation and security services that we provide but that definitely wouldn't have a collectible means."

Moving forward to 2024, the city does have a plan to recoup future taxpayer costs in the form of a security fee for special events. Winters said this fee would be invoiced to venues or event organizers for events requiring a heavy police presence.

what are the examples of morality uncidents in the play

I think that morality and justice are linked throughout the play.

"The Visit" raises the question of the corruptibility of justice and subjective sense of morality by asking whether justice can be bought in return for material wealth. As a young man, Ill himself bought "justice" at Claire's expense by presenting false witnesses during the paternity suit that she brought against him. The end-result, for Claire, was a life that she would never have chosen for herself, and one for which she now seeks revenge.

When Claire visits the town, she offers an extraordinary monetary gift - but only on the condition that the town rectifies its past failure by putting Ill to death. In her mind, Claire equates Ill's punishment with "justice". The drama of the play unfolds as a kind of "proof" of Claire's assertion: that everything, including justice, can be bought.

In the past, Claire has purchased justice many times. Boby the Butler, for instance, was previously a judge in Guellen, but ultimately opted out of the profession in order to enter into Claire's personal service. The salary, he explains to the town, was so high that he couldn't refuse her. This foreshadows the town's experience with Claire's conditional gift: the gift is so generous that the sacrifice of personal and collective dignity is not too high a price to pay in return.

In an ironic inversion of Claire's decree, Claire has rescued the characters Roby and Toby, former American gangsters who had been sentenced to death by electric chair. She purchases each man's life, thus proving that her wealth is capable of altering the very essence of the American justice system.

It is important to note that the political institutions helpful in fashioning and enforcing an idea of "justice" in society are corrupted and rendered passive in "The Visit". In the face of impending wealth and prosperity, even the Mayor, the opposing political faction, and the police become complicit in Claire's scheme.

Quote Five Minutes - So much can happen to the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan in five minutes! Mitch and Cam have five minutes to catch a new flight while fighting the effects of sleeping pills they took prematurely. Then at Rainer's birthday dinner, Haley and Rainer are forced to reevaluate their entire relationship in the five minutes before the birthday cake arrives. Meanwhile, Phil and Claire pay a surprise visit to Alex and are given a five-minute surprise introduction to her new boyfriend. Finally, with only five minutes to catch a movie, Manny has to find the perfect parking space and endure Jay and Gloria's backseat argument.

I was wondering why this show suddenly became Life In Pieces, then I came here and saw the episode description.

Yeah that's what I was thinking that they stole the script from that show on CBS that I couldn't think of  the name of.

I love Sarah, and I don't mean this to be mean, but -- what's going on with her face?

4 minutes ago, voiceover said: I love Sarah, and I don't mean this to be mean, but -- what's going on with her face?

Yeah it looked really puffy, like she did something to it.

8 minutes ago, voiceover said: I love Sarah, and I don't mean this to be mean, but -- what's going on with her face?

She hasn't said anything publicly, but she does suffer from kidney disease and did receive a transplant a few years ago so it's possible the puffiness is a side-effect of steroid medication she may be on for that. She did miss the SAG awards in January for health reasons and I imagine these episodes were filmed around that time.

Ohhhh...that makes sense.  Posters in last ep's thread mentioned something about her health.  Yikes.  Thanks for the update.

What a listless episode.  They must have filmed these segments in the middle of other episodes so they could stitch them together later.  Nothing had anything to do with anything else.

Boring episode. Cam and Mitch's part was stupid. That's not how sleeping pills work.

I feel like all those situations took more then 5 minutes too.

I feel like I missed something in the Haley/Rainer relationship.  How'd they get this close, this fast?  I'd buy into Haley/Andy engaged (or even Haley/Dylan) before this!

Someone tell me that I should've seen this coming?

Haven't they been dating pretty much all season long?  And based on the end-result, it was clear that only one person was moving fast.

2 hours ago, Marley said: That's not how sleeping pills work.

I don't think they took regular "sleeping pills".  The label was in Spanish ("cuidado" translates as Watch Out AKA Caution?) and they were given to them by a friend.  Sure, it was exaggerated (it is a sitcom not a documentary).  Plus, pharmaceuticals can affect different folks in different ways, especially if one is consuming alcohol or is already amp-ed up for other reasons.

It doesnt get as much publicity now, but even Ambien has led to people behaving crazy/normal and not recalling a thing.

Vyk

Guess I'll take the opposite stance and say that I liked the episode.  Didn't love it, but liked it well enough.  Well . . . at least half of it.  I did like Cam and Mitchell's segment even if that isn't what happens with sleeping pills and alcohol.  And I enjoyed Phil, Claire, Alex, and Ben's segment.  Could've gone without Jay, Gloria, and Manny's segment, though, and the only real reason I appreciated Haley and Rainer's segment is because it looks like they're finally at an end, like most of us want them to be.

No Luke, Lily, or Joe, though.  What the hell is with these writers excluding them from episode to episode?

DrSpaceman73

8 hours ago, Artsda said: Yeah it looked really puffy, like she did something to it.

My guess is she has been on prednisone for her kidney disease, but don't know for sure.

I liked most of the episode.  Not so much the Gloria/Jay part though.

I like Alex and Ben together, they seem like a good match.

Cam and Mitch for once were funny together without bickering or fighting or competing with each other.

I hope the is the end of Haley/Ranier.  I still just find it a bit creepy.

readster

Mrs. Readster and me were on the floor laughing with Cam and Mitch, that was the funniest I have seen the two of them. Especially when they woke up and had cowboy hats on and a dog. Enjoyed the Dumphies story line. Jay and Gloria were fine (my mother is the same way). However, seriously, outside the realism of California parking with Manny, his whole worry about the cappuccino machine was too stupid for words. Also, I love Nathan Fillion but I have hated what they have done with him all season with Rauner. Much like Axl and April over at The Middle, this relationship has been too much and very happy to have it come to an end. However, I'm with majority, either get Haley in a relationship with someone who makes sense, has chemistry and doesn't make us roll our eyes at it (especially given Sarah's health). Or just don't.

I have to agree, why has Lily been so cut back on things this season, I get things with Luke but Lilly has been used very little the last few months.

luna1122

I thought this episode was hilarious. Mitch and Cam sleepwalking/shopping/eating/tattooing/buyingpuppies on some kind of Ambien-like trance state was very funny to me, tho of course that puppy will never be mentioned again, cuz this family tends to be very bad luck for animals. Ben better watch out for his cat.

I don't find Haley and Rainer creepy...he's a very cute, youthful-looking forty something, and she's in her mid twenties. Fairly big age diff, sure, but also fairly common. But I never felt any heat from them either.

I thought this episode was really funny, especially Cam and Mitchell's part (and I usually find them, especially Cam, annoying).  I could've watched the whole 30 minutes of them doped to the gills, stumbling through airports.  I'm really curious how they made it through DFW without waking up.  And getting Lily's name wrong every time had me laughing out loud.  Poor Lucy...

I also kind of liked the Rainer and Haley part, mostly because I'm a nerd and know Nathan Fillion actually DID have a birthday this week, so that was kind of fun.  I like both characters, but I'm glad they backed away from the engagement because it's still a little icky to me that they're together, even though Rainer is pretty immature for his age.

I enjoyed all of it except, (and I know it's a comedy TV show) Manny kept hitting cars and just driving away. Nope, you at least get out and look.

Gloria's storytelling is much like Edith Bunker's. The only thing missing was Jay imitating putting a gun to his head. Sorry, All in the Family reference.

I didn't find Mitch and Cam's segment very funny, but I'd watch a GIF of Cam getting slapped in the face for the next five years or so.

BusyOctober

BusyOctober

The only positive things I can say about this episode:

2) Gloria's accent wasn't dialed up to "11" for once

5 minutes ago, Ina123 said: I enjoyed all of it except, (and I know it's a comedy TV show) Manny kept hitting cars and just driving away. Nope, you at least get out and look. I thought he was hitting the curb, not other cars.

I believe Manny was hitting curbs, not cars.  Jay must have been extremely distracted by the story story to not be annoyed at how many spots Manny couldn't fit the car in (park) and how close they were to missing the movie.  He's a terrible parker.  (And like Jay wouldn't want to drive in the first place?!)

So, now Haley's had two proposals.  One (Dylan - although Claire didn't let him get it all out and ruined the moment for Haley, according to Haley) a definite no and one (Rainer) an immediate yes-turned-seconds-later-into-no. So, maybe the next time will be just right.

Not much to say about the Dunphy part except, yay, we finally have proof Alex is definitely back at school.  No more debates about that at least.

What's in the bag, Mitch!

(Who's watching Lily?)

I wanted to laugh, I really did, but they didn't give me much that wasn't sad or ridiculous. They do farce well on this show from time to time, but I did not see it in the Cam&Mitch on drugs stuff.

Haley storyline was sad (made worse by how puffy/not well Sarah Hyland looked) as was the Alex story line

paulvdb

1 hour ago, indeed said: (Who's watching Lily?)

Probably Luke. Or maybe one of Mitch and Cam's friends. Or that football player who lives with them (does he still live with them?)

I liked the Cam/Mitch part.  I was hoping for more from them, because it started so well.  I didn't care for the rest of it.  Haley's boyfriend is sort of an older Dylan (I miss him, hated Andy).  I am so sick of Claire and her neuroses.  Phil is even annoying me.  More Lily, please!!!

You know, I thought about Ambien too.  The first time you take it, it can make you wacky.  I don't remember much about  my  first time.  Only the next morning I found out that I'd made a 35-minute drive to a friend's house at 10:00 at night.  Without getting pulled over.  And I'd also gone through a McDonald's drive-thru & purchased & consumed a small chocolate shake. Don't try this at home, kids.

I wish the sound effect would have been a thud instead of a clang. Well, my hearing is bad. Could have been a thud.

Did not work for me.  Everything felt very gimmicky, though I do like the Claire finally knows about Alex's relationship.  Though, why the heck was Alex not texting or calling them back?  They usually ignore Alex, so she must have gone a long time for them to pop in for a visit or care.

I do think Alex can do better then this nebbish guy who is too attached to his mother and cat.  I know engineering schools are one of the few places where ratios favor women and a girl as smart and attractive as Alex would probably have tons of guys asking her out all the time.

The parking stuff with Manny is the first time I have ever seen him act like a real human being.  I did think he was being rude, but I understand he was frustrated.  I actually kind of laughed when he yelled at the poor lady running from him "Don't flatter yourself, lady", just because usually Manny things of himself as too cultured and refined to engage in that type of behavior.

joanne3482

The parking could have been funnier if they were skewering the crazy LA parking signs. The 4 signs that say no parking from this time to this time but okay with permit number blah blah blah.... They are super confusing and easy to get ticketed at. That being said, I can barely parallel park so I'm totally willing to pay outrageous fees to park. I grew up in a town that didn't require parallel parking and never really learned.

You can't even deplane in 5 minutes.

At least Cam and Mitch weren't really bickering, and the physical comedy was there, but it was totally predictable, basically an episode of 2 Broke Girls.

I enjoyed the Dunphy and Pritchet-Delgado stories though. They were actually heartfelt and felt genuine. Everybody's mutual awkwardness at the situation (except maybe for Ben) in the College story was terrific. I liked that Phil initially defended Claire but upon further information twice had to re-evaluate his stance. Plus Cat Burrito! The whole set-up for the dash cam shots with Manny worked well with the front-seat, back-seat issues.

Was Manny making his mother and step mother sit in the back seat so his precious cappuccino maker would have the best spot or was it because it would not fit?  If is the former, then he is truly obnoxious, because Jay and Gloria are probably paying for that expensive machine (not to mention his college).

Also, is Jay paying for Manny's college.  I know Jay is rich and looks at him as a son, but shouldn't his biological father at least chip in?

Are we supposed to believe that Manny would go into the movie and leave the cappuccino maker visible in the front seat?  (He mentioned not strapping it into the front seat, but would putting it in the trunk be equally bad?)  I also think that the Pritchett-Delgados would have a car that automatically parks for you.  At the very least, that would have been a great spot for an automobile commercial touting that feature!

4 hours ago, indeed said: And like Jay wouldn't want to drive in the first place?!

I assumed that Manny needed the driving practice.  He certainly needs the parking practice.

Maybe they wanted to sit in the back together so they could talk? It was a bit of a strange set-up but if the goal was for Manny to practice driving and Jay and Gloria wanted to talk, it worked. It's not like they were crammed into a tiny backseat.

5 hours ago, Ina123 said: Gloria's storytelling is much like Edith Bunker's. The only thing missing was Jay imitating putting a gun to his head. Sorry, All in the Family reference.

I was reminded of my (87 year old) father's story telling. I always get 10x as much detail as strictly necessary :)  Smile and nod, smile and nod.

My perception of the character is colored by my negative opinion of Joe Mande, the comedian who plays him.  I saw him open for Aziz Ansari in 2010 and enjoyed his stand-up material enough to follow him on Twitter.  But in recent years, he's become increasingly obnoxious.  He's attempting to be edgy (perhaps hoping to duplicate Louis C.K.'s career trajectory), but it seems forced and desperate (and not nearly as witty as he apparently believes).  I especially dislike his political tweets, in part because his politics largely align with mine (and I hate seeing my own views expressed in such a sophomoric manner).

Quote I know engineering schools are one of the few places where ratios favor women and a girl as smart and attractive as Alex would probably have tons of guys asking her out all the time.

It's been clear for some time that the series is set in an alternate universe in which someone like Alex is widely regarded as an unappealing loser, even among her academic peers.  The writers have attempted to justify this by sabotaging her character, which has shifted from grounded, self-confident and playfully sarcastic to erratic, maladjusted and rancorous.

On 3/30/2017 at 1:43 PM, marymon said: You can't even deplane in 5 minutes.

That was the duration in which Mitch and Cam were expected to walk from a ticket counter to a nearby gate.

I enjoyed that segment the most and found the parking segment more predictable.  Me (to my viewing companion):

"At the end, Jay reveals that he was the stutterer.  Then Gloria leaves the car and Jay leans toward Manny and says, 'that's how you tell a story'."

tennisgurl

I actually thought that was pretty funny, especially the Mitch and Cam segment. For some reason, I loved when they decided that if they were going to be having a layover in Texas, they needed hats, for some reason.

I'm just happy they have Alex on campus again. And a Star Trek hologram movie sounds awesome Claire! You don't get to judge people, you ate a spider!

Gloria apparently tells story the way my mom does. Full of pointless details and tangents branching off from the original story!

We frequently count my mom's tagents or shout "you digress" when she starts to go wildly off her story.

I enjoyed the Cam and Mitch storyline. I also liked they ended up with cowboy hats though I doubt they would have enough time in Dallas to leave the airport to get tattooed and pierced.

some of them don't.  BTDT

I don't see Alex getting a lot of guys hitting on her in college :

For one, she is not unattractive, but she is just average looking.

Second, her personality is abrasive and off putting, not just to her family but often to others.

Third, she doesn't socialize much outside probably study groups.  She isn't into that sort of thing.  Nothing wrong with that, but it also limits her ability to find an on campus boyfriend

Fourth, up to now most of the time it seems she has been living at home and not actually at school, or going home every chance she gets.

2 hours ago, DrSpaceman73 said: I don't see Alex getting a lot of guys hitting on her in college : For one, she is not unattractive, but she is just average looking.

A significant segment of the Internet disagrees, at least when it comes to Ariel Winter in real life.  (I don't recommend seeking out the relevant message boards, on which she's been shamelessly objectified since her early teenage years.)

Of course, the rules of fiction dictate that eyeglasses can instantly transform Superman into Clark Kent or make any woman appear plain.

Quote Second, her personality is abrasive and off putting, not just to her family but often to others.

That's how the characterization has been bastardized, presumably to justify her social unpopularity.  No apparent in-universe explanation exists for this shift.  She always had a sarcastic streak, but nothing over-the-top.  She was intellectually advanced, but she wasn't a haughty know-it-all.  For the most part, she seemed like a nice, normal (by sitcom standards) kid.

Quote Third, she doesn't socialize much outside probably study groups.  She isn't into that sort of thing.

Because the writers jettisoned that aspect of her personality.  About four years ago, they had her doing this .  Then they decided that a one-dimensional depiction would be easier to handle, evidently.  And her only recent character development has been the emergence of a self-destructive tendency to rush into unhealthy, borderline-fetishistic sexual relationships at the drop of a hat.

19 minutes ago, Rowsdower said: She always had a sarcastic streak, but nothing over-the-top.  She was intellectually advanced, but she wasn't a haughty know-it-all.

This is definitely a YMMV type thing because I have always seen her a haughty know it all with a mean sarcastic streak and I say this as someone who identifies a lot with her character.

If she existed in real life, sure.  I'm viewing the character through a sitcom lens.  Everything is exaggerated for comedic effect (and some of dialogue falls outside the show's universe).  In that context, Alex's original depiction (a variant of the "precocious kid" staple) wasn't particularly severe.

I am also viewing as a sitcom character and I don't see a marked difference in how she was portrayed when she was younger.

Fair enough.  As you noted, this is a "YMMV" situation.

mojito

I thought this was one of the better episodes of the year.

I liked the coupling of Alex and what's-his-name. For once, I liked the Mitch-Cam story line and chuckled when they couldn't remember Lily's name. And I liked Manny-Jay-Sophia in this episode. Didn't much care for Haley and Rainer, but that has a lot to do with my not taking any relationship that Haley is in as being believable. She's just too shifty.

I hadn't realized that Alex was back at CalTech.

8 hours ago, paulvdb said: Probably Luke. Or maybe one of Mitch and Cam's friends. Or that football player who lives with them (does he still live with them?)

No.  Dwight moved to Hawaii with his parents after football season ended.  He was only staying with Cam and Mitchell for the duration of the season.  So I think he likely left off-screen.

Ben.  Claire's assistant.

Don't try this at home, kids. "...in heavy syrup!"

''Cling peaches!"  :D

5 hours ago, meep.meep said:   Also, is Jay paying for Manny's college.  I know Jay is rich and looks at him as a son, but shouldn't his biological father at least chip in?

There was a previous episode this season that had Haley borrowing the bag Gloria had saved her paychecks money in for Manny's college. So she is paying for it for the most part.

I hated Rainer glad it looks like he is out. Bring back Andy!

Justice, Morality, and Money Theme Icon

Claire ’s quest to win justice for Ill ’s betrayal propels the plot of The Visit , and she ultimately succeeds in taking Ill’s life and reputation as punishment for his wrongs. In many stories that depict a person avenging past wrongs, the ultimate verdict is seen to vindicate justice, truth, and morality. The Visit , however, uses Claire’s quest for justice—and the vapid and shifting definitions of justice to which the townspeople subscribe—to call into question whether “justice” is a concept with any meaning at all.

From the very beginning, justice means something different to each of the central characters in the play. To Claire, justice is the same as vengeance—it is her desire for disproportionate retribution against someone who wronged her forty-five years ago. This “justice” is not rooted in any external set of rules or guidelines, like religion or the law—rather, it is something to which Claire, who is driven by self-interest, feels personally entitled. Furthermore, Claire treats justice as a commodity to be bought or sold. When she offers the town a billion dollars in exchange for Ill’s death, the Mayor protests that “justice can’t be bought,” but Claire responds that “Everything can be bought.” Thus, as Claire herself admits, it’s wealth that allows her to seek the precise “justice” she desires by essentially bribing the entire town to provide it.

For Ill, however, justice requires accountability to one’s own actions. As the town turns against him, Ill retreats inward and, in time, accepts his inevitable death as punishment for his betrayal of Claire. “I turned Clara into what she is,” he says, “and myself into what I am, a grimy, petty shopkeeper.” With no recourse (since all of Güllen’s institutions have decided to kill him), Ill stops trying to justify his actions, and he simply acknowledges the pain he caused years ago. In the end, this sets him apart from his fellow Gülleners, who refuse to ever acknowledge their own moral failings. It also sets him apart from Claire, whose development as a character is static and stunted; she remains vengeful from beginning to end. Ill, meanwhile, undergoes a transformation from “a grimy, petty shopkeeper” into someone willing to hold himself and others to abstract ideals; when the Mayor suggests that Ill commit suicide and save the town the trouble of having to kill him, he refuses. The town, too, he argues, must assume responsibility for accepting Claire’s dubious bargain.

For the townspeople, “justice” is an empty word—one that carries connotations of “doing the right thing,” but is actually unconnected to any real principles and is therefore easily twisted to accommodate greed and self-interest. Upon hearing Claire’s offer, the people of Güllen proudly and defiantly refuse. “[W]e are still in Europe,” the Mayor reminds Claire. “We’re not savages yet. In the name of the town of Güllen, I reject your offer. In the name of humanity. We would rather be poor than have blood on our hands.” Despite the mayor’s stated commitment to principle, this speech is quickly revealed to be empty: it is not long before the people of Güllen begin living above their means, implicitly acknowledging their intent to comply with Claire’s bargain. At first, even with their most flagrant extravagances on full view, the townsfolk deny that their values have changed or that they intend to satisfy Claire’s demands. However, once they can no longer deny their intentions, they change their concept of justice in order to fit their actions, rather than holding their actions accountable to their concept of justice.

This is clearest in the contrast between the Mayor’s first speech refusing Claire’s offer and the Teacher ’s speech at the trial in the third act. The Teacher’s speech mirrors the Mayor’s in its emphasis of principles (“The issue here is not money. […] It is not prosperity, a comfortable way of life, luxury; the issue is whether we want to make justice a reality, and not only justice but all the ideals…that constitute the true value of our Western world.”). However, while the Mayor had invoked these same principles to refuse Claire’s offer, the Teacher is invoking them to justify accepting it. In this context, “justice” becomes essentially meaningless—an empty commodity disguised as morality. Justice, Dürrenmatt suggests, can be bought and principles and ideals are only relevant insofar as they are convenient.

Justice, Morality, and Money Quotes in The Visit

Two gangsters from Manhattan, sentenced to die in the electric chair at Sing Sing. Released at my request to carry my sedan chair. One million dollars per petition is what it cost me. The sedan chair comes from the Louvre, a gift from the French president. A nice gentleman. Looks just like he does in the papers. Carry me into town, Roby and Toby.

You have remained unforgettable. Truly. Your academic achievements are still held up as an example by our educators, especially the interest you showed in the most important subject, botany and zoology, thus expressing your sympathy with every living being, indeed with all creatures in need of protection. Even then, your love of justice and your charitable nature were widely admired.

Irony and Artifice Theme Icon

CLAIRE ZACHANASSIAN: I will tell you the condition. I will give you a billion, and with that billion I will buy myself justice. MAYOR: What exactly do you mean by that, Madam? CLAIRE ZACHANASSIAN: I mean what I said. MAYOR: But justice can’t be bought! CLAIRE ZACHANASSIAN: Everything can be bought.

Correct. Chief Justice Hofer. Forty-five years ago I was Chief Justice of Güllen and then moved on to the Court of Appeal in Kaffigen, until twenty-five years ago Mrs. Zachanassian offered me the opportunity to enter her service as her butler. I accepted. A peculiar career for a man of learning, perhaps, but the salary was so fantastic—

BUTLER: What happened to you? CLAIRE ZACHANASSIAN: I became a prostitute. BUTLER: Why? CLAIRE ZACHANASSIAN: The court’s verdict turned me into one.

Life has gone on, but I have forgotten nothing, Ill. Neither the woods of Konradsweil nor Petersen’s barn, neither Widow Boll’s bedroom nor your treachery. Now we have grown old, the two of us, you down at the heels and me cut to pieces by surgeons’ knives, and now I want us both to settle accounts: you chose your life and forced me into mine. You wanted time to be suspended, just a moment ago, in the woods of our youth, so full of impermanence. Now I have suspended it, and now I want justice, justice for a billion.

Mrs. Zachanassian, we are still in Europe; we’re not savages yet. In the name of the town of Güllen I reject your offer. In the name of humanity. We would rather be poor than have blood on our hands.

ILL: You’ve got new shoes. New yellow shoes. SECOND MAN: So? ILL: You, too, Hofbauer. You, too, are wearing new shoes. (He looks at the women, walks over to them slowly, horrified.) You too. New yellow shoes. New yellow shoes.

ILL: The customers I’ve had this morning. Usually there’s no one for the longest time, and now, for the past few days, they’re coming in droves. FIRST MAN: It’s because we stand by you. We stick by our Ill. Firm as a rock.

MAYOR: You forget that you’re in Güllen. A town with a humanist tradition. Goethe slept here. Brahms composed a quartet. These values impose an obligation. A man enters, left, with a typewriter. MAN: The new typewriter, Your Honor. A Remington.

Human kindness, gentlemen, is made for the purses of millionaires. With financial power like mine, you can afford yourself a new world order. The world made a whore of me, now I’ll make a whorehouse of the world. Pay up or get off the dance floor. You want to join the dance? Only paying customers merit respect. And believe me, I’ll pay. Güllen for a murder, boom times for a corpse.

If he tries to expose Clara by claiming she put a price on his head or something like that, when actually it was just an expression of unspeakable suffering, we’ll just have to take action.

The temptation is too great and our poverty is too wretched. But I know something else. I too will take part in it. I can feel myself slowly turning into a murderer. My faith in humanity is powerless. And because I know this, I have turned into a drunk. I am scared, Ill, just as you have been scared. I still know that some day an old lady will visit us too, and that then what is happening to you now will happen to us, but soon, maybe in a few hours, I will no longer know it.

Your Honor! I’ve been through hell. I saw you all going into debt, and with every sign of prosperity I felt death creeping closer. If you had spared me that anguish, that horrible fear, it would have all been different, we could speak on different terms, I would take the rifle. For all of your sake. But then I shut myself in, conquered my fear. Alone. It was hard; now it’s done. There is no turning back. Now you must be my judges. I will submit to your decision, whatever it turns out to be. For me it will be justice; I don’t know what it will be for you. May God help you live with your judgment. You can kill me, I won’t complain, I won’t protest, I won’t defend myself, but your action is yours, and I can’t relieve you of it.

ILL: The town’s holding a meeting this evening. They’ll sentence me to death and one of them will kill me. I don’t know who he will be or where it will happen, I only know that I’m ending a meaningless life. CLAIRE ZACHANASSIAN: I loved you. You betrayed me. But the dream of life, of love, of trust—this dream that was a reality once—I haven’t forgotten that. I want to rebuild it with my billions, I will change the past, by destroying you.

MAYOR: The Claire Zachanassian Endowment has been accepted. Unanimously. Not for the sake of the money— THE COMMUNITY: Not for the sake of the money— MAYOR: But for the sake of justice— THE COMMUNITY: But for the sake of justice— MAYOR: And to allay our conscience. THE COMMUNITY: And to allay our conscience. MAYOR: For we cannot live if we sanction a crime in our midst— THE COMMUNITY: For we cannot live if we sanction a crime in our midst—

Days of Our Lives Round Table: Ben and Claire Kiss!

By: Author Christine Orlando

  • X (Twitter)

Gwen came clean (sort of) and still got blackmailed by Dr. Snyder, Abigail left town, Ben and Claire kissed, while Kristen used Chloe as her bargaining chip with the Salem PD.

Our TV Fanatics, Jack and Christine, are joined by LumiForeverAndAlways and Silvananoir from MyHourglass, a Days of Our Lives fan forum to debate Gwen’s options, Ben and Claire’s future, the possibility of an EJ return, and what Brady will do if Kristen gets what she wants.

ben and claire to pay us a visit

  • Gwen admitted that Abigail didn’t push her down the stairs (only a partial comeuppance). Were you surprised that Jack was so willing to forgive her? Will he forgive her if he knows the whole truth?

LumiForeverAndAlways: To be honest, I was not surprised at all because ever since Jack found who she was he has put everyone else on the back burner and showed favoritism towards Gwen.

Silvananoir: I'm not surprised. I think he's disappointed in her but he has a lot of guilt, for something that isn't his fault, and because of that he's willing to give her way more leniency than if he had raised her.

I think he'd be really angry if he knew the whole truth but still not enough to cut her out of his life.

Gwen's childhood is going to be a card that is going to work for a while on Jack especially with Jennifer not there to help balance him out.

Jack: I wasn't surprised Jack was willing to forgive her based on what she said. She presented it as an understandable mistake. I wish Jennifer was there to tell him how Nicole wreaked havoc with her life with a similar lie, though.

I think that learning that she lied about when she lost the baby might be a bridge too far for him, though, only because these stories always end explosively. Abigail didn't kill the baby nor have any consequences imposed for Gwen's claiming she did, so what difference does the timing make, really?

Christine: No. Not only does Jack feel guilty about not being there for Gwen growing up, I think he feels a connection to her. Jack was always the black sheep, and he's done some horrible things in his past.

He's been given a lot of second chances and shown a lot of love, so I think he's paying that forward with Gwen.

  • What should Gwen do about Dr. Snyder blackmailing her into being a drug mule?

LumiForeverAndAlways: She should mention this to Jack or Chad as they both have connections to the hospital through Kayla and the board and then they can help her with reporting this to either one of these connections.

Silvananoir: Tell Jack. She knows that he has her back and he'll support her. Jack is her best option here.

Jack: She should take that envelope straight to Kayla and report everything Snyder says and threaten to go public if Kayla doesn't do something about it. Gwen's father owns the Spectator, for God's sake.

Snyder and Kayla do NOT want the kind of publicity Salem's best investigative reporter could put on the hospital if something isn't done.

Christine: At this point, I think Gwen is scared of losing Jack's love if the whole truth comes out. If she turns to Jack, Chad, or Kayla, she'll have to tell them why Snyder is blackmailing her in the first place and there will be consequences she doesn't want to face.

But I think telling Jack is her best option. It will hurt any trust she's built with him, but he's likely to still have her back and help her take Dr. Snyder down.

Ben and Claire kissed after Ciara sent him divorce papers, but Ben pulled back. Were you surprised that Claire didn’t? Do you think these two will end up together? Do you want them to?

LumiForeverAndAlways: If I'm telling the truth, I kind of do as I am not a big fan of the whole Cin pairing. To be truthful, I think feelings are developing between them but they are keeping them quiet hence Claire not pulling back.

Silvananoir: I'm not surprised Ben pulled away. He still loves Ciara and the comfort that Claire offers feels good but not enough to get him to stray.

I'm not surprised that Claire didn't. Ben has been there for her, they've grown close since the Charlie saga and trying to find Ciara. I think she loved how much he leaned on her and how much he listens to her.

I don't think it's an obsession but I think that when Ciara pushed Ben away, Claire allowed herself to start thinking of the possibilities. I like the idea of them and I like that they didn't fall in bed together. A slow build would be nice before the inevitable Ciara return to blow it all up.

Jack: Oh, I wish they would end up together. Ben and Claire have a relationship in which they actually communicate, support each other, and have common interests. It's not just sex, bad guys in their way, and being unable to spend 5 seconds apart.

But DAYS has decided that true love looks like the clingy, unhealthy nonsense that is Ben and Ciara, so I'm sure that Claire is a temporary diversion at best.

Christine: Ben still loves Ciara, so it makes sense that he was the one to pull back. But I just don't feel much chemistry between he and Claire and I prefer them as friends.

Personally, I'm hoping that Claire eventually gets paired with Chanel because that could be a lot more fun.

  • If EJ manages to make his way back to Salem, would you like to see him paired with Sami, Nicole, Abigail, or someone else?

LumiForeverAndAlways: I am not excited to see EJ as I am a massive Lumi fan as you can detect from my username so that rules out a pairing with Sami. I liked Abigail and Austin so that rules her out too and as much as I do like Eric and Nicole he's not coming home anytime soon.

I always did think Nicole and EJ suited each other so I think he should be paired with Nicole.

Silvananoir: I'm not sure. I hated the Ej/Abby saga and would not like a revisit.

I loved Ejole but a lot of that had to do with the chemistry of the original actor. I would really need to see the recast, which has been announced and I'm not feeling it but could be convinced to get back on the EJole train.

Jack: I'd like to see him be the town pariah that nobody wants anything to do with. He raped Sami and abused Nicole, and Abigail is unstable and whiny enough without EJ to obsess over.

EJ and Xander getting up to mischief together would be a lot more fun than pairing him with some woman he's going to mistreat.

Christine: It's hard to say if the original actor isn't returning. EJ had chemistry with all three. I liked EJ and Sami because he never judged her and their bad boy/bad girl sides meshed. Plus, he seemed to really love Allie and Will as much as his own kids.

I loved Nicole and EJ together before she lost their baby and the show decided to break them up. Once Nicole and Eric implode, an EJ/Nicole pairing could fun.

Abigail has enough drama in her life and I just don't see Marci Miller's version of Abby having the same edge as Kate Mansi's Abby and that's the version that paired well with EJ.

  • It appears Chanel may be sticking around Salem for a while? What do you think of her so far? Any ideas of what type of job she should get to support herself?

LumiForeverAndAlways: I don’t normally like to say bad things about characters unless warranted but in Chanel's case, I don't like her at all. As for a job, who would know? She's pretty happy to freeload off her family.

Silvananoir: I don't care about Chanel. I'm pretty neutral but it's always nice to see another woman of color on the show. I just wish I liked her more.

I'd like to see her work at the pub maybe? Get her interacting with the people her age and working a regular job like her mother would want.

Jack: I actually have started to warm to Chanel. Her scenes with Allie and Lani lately have been a lot more human.

I think Chanel should pursue acting or some other type of creative career where her penchant for drama would be an asset.

In the. meantime, maybe working at the Horton Center would help her see that she is pretty privileged and there's a lot worse out there than a mom wanting her to have a job.

Christine: Chanel is growing on me. This show needs a more diverse cast and I like that Chanel is a young woman of color and bisexual. Not to mention, she walks that line of bad girl with the possibility of doing good.

I'd love to see Chanel and Allie team up on some sort of a passion project. They're both a little lost right now. I'm hoping they find something they can work on together that could turn into a career.

I just hope they don't make up a position for Chanel, like working at Basic Black or Titan or even Gabi Chic or having her work at the hospital. And I think she'd be a horrible waitress. There have to be more interesting options in Salem.

  • Kristen turned herself in but is holding Chloe hostage as a bargaining chip to get herself out of prison. Do you think Kristin will walk free, and if so, will she and Brady reconcile?

LumiForeverAndAlways: There is no way she will walk free, but then again, it is Salem and I really don't want her and Brady to reconcile at all. I feel like she brings him down and he is way better suited to Chloe (Team Broe all the way).

Silvananoir: She and Brady are over. But Kristen won't walk. I also don't see her staying in prison. Dimeras never pay for their actions. She's going to go on the run and leave Brady and Rachel behind for a while. I wish she'd take Brady with her.

Jack: This is so ridiculous. The cops should put Kristen in solitary confinement until Chloe is found, either with or without her help. There is no reason she should walk free on multiple attempted murders and kidnappings because she knows where her latest victim is.

But this is Salem, so she probably will walk free. Hopefully, attempting to mess with all the people Brady cares about will get him to finally realize that he cannot have a future with Kristen.

Christine: Oh, this is Salem so she'll probably walk free, but I don't think Brady will ever see her the same way again. If Brady does cut her off, Kristen might grab Rachel and head off to one of the Dimera islands.

As for Brady, I'm not a fan of his. I actually liked him best with Teresa. I just hope they don't pair him with Chloe. I've always found that pairing snooze-worthy.

  • What did you find most disappointing this week in Salem?

LumiForeverAndAlways: A few things the fact Nicole and Xander slept together, Xander working for Kristen, and Jack forgiving Gwen.

Silvananoir: The Chad and Abigail scenes are draining. I just don't care about their drama. I honestly wish the two would have a real conversation about the state of their marriage. They feel like a stay together for the children marriage. Friday's episode was a major fast-forward point.

Jack: That the writers think we're going to buy Lani's claim that she and Kristen are "just friends" when five seconds after she makes it, they're holding hands, pledging eternal fidelity to one another, and talking about how they wish they could raise their children together.

Also, Gwen should not have given into Snyder's lame blackmail threat, and Sami should not have called EJ. She should have called Rafe and pretended she was calling EJ so that she and Lucas could get help and Xander could get caught. Where is the smart Sami of yesteryear?

And why on Earth did Shawn and Belle go for this stupid plan instead of having Claire pretend to forgive Jan so that Jan would confide in her about killing Charlie?

Also, it would have been nice if there'd been some mention of Belle knowing that Brady was in the hospital before she happened to call John to visit him there, and a scene of Belle with Brady would have been appropriate too.

Finally, I'm sick of everyone acting like Abigail is 100% pure and innocent when she's not. She STILL hasn't made the connection between her bad behavior and Jack and Chad thinking Gwen's lie about Abby pushing her was plausible.

Chad even listed all the horrible things Abby did to Gwen but quickly backpedaled into "Gwen deserved them" as if two wrongs make a right and Abby's unhinged behavior somehow doesn't count.

Christine: Shawn and Belle's plan to trick Gwen was horrible. He's a detective and she's an attorney and that's the best they could come up with?

I also didn't love that Xander was willing to kill Sami and Lucas. He's done a lot of bad things but I don't remember him killing anyone before. I was glad he took the payoff and let them go, but I'm wondering how he'll explain his newfound wealth.

Lucas making fun of Sami's weight was annoying and distasteful. If it was meant to be funny, it backfired.

Also, why did Lani think Chanel wouldn't be attracted to Eli. Although Chanel didn't want to use the bisexual label, she just finished explaining to Lani that she's attracted to both sexes. How did Lani misunderstand that?

  • What was your favorite quote, scene, or storyline from this week’s Days of Our Lives?

LumiForeverAndAlways: My favorite storyline is, without a doubt, the Lumi story and them kissing again which brings me to my favorite scenes for the week: the Lumi kiss and them talking about the history they have shared together.

Silvananoir: I honestly enjoyed Lumi this week. It's always surprising how charming they are together. Their banter is fun and the scene with Xander was pretty great.

Jack: I had to laugh at Gwen asking Snyder how he missed Jan coming out of her coma.

Gwen: She [Jan] woke up weeks earlier and you didn’t notice? Didn’t they teach you that in med school? 🔗 permalink: She [Jan] woke up weeks earlier and you didn’t notice? Didn’t they teach you that in med…

I've been saying that for weeks — how does Jan wake up, sneak out of the hospital, and return to fake a coma without her doctors knowing?

I also have to admit that as much as I found Abigail's goodbye scenes tedious and lacking, I liked Chad's response to Jack telling him that Gwen lied. www.tvfanatic.com/quotes/you-thought-id-be-shocked-that-gwen-lied-about-abigail-for-the-3/

Christine: Lani and Kristen's conversation was oddly satisfying. But I had to laugh when Kristen told Lani she never meant to hurt anyone just moments after paying Xander to go kill Sami and Lucas!

And I love that Jack consistently tries to do the right thing by Gwen. It makes me love him all the more.

I also appreciated Gabi being understanding about Jake worrying about Kate in the hospital. Kate and Gabi have been through a lot and I'm glad that their relationship wasn't completely destroyed by this silly triangle.

Visitor Visa

Visa Waiver Program

Travel Without a Visa

Citizens of Canada and Bermuda

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to travel to the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons who want to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1 visa), for tourism (B-2 visa), or for a combination of both purposes (B-1/B-2 visa).

Here are some examples of activities permitted with a visitor visa:

Business (B-1)

  • Consult with business associates
  • Attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
  • Settle an estate
  • Negotiate a contract

Tourism (B-2)

  • Vacation (holiday)
  • Visit with friends or relatives
  • Medical treatment
  • Participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
  • Participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
  • Enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Travel Purposes Not Permitted On Visitor Visas

These are some examples of activities that require different categories of visas and cannot be done while on a visitor visa:

  • Paid performances, or any professional performance before a paying audience
  • Arrival as a crewmember on a ship or aircraft
  • Work as foreign press, in radio, film, print journalism, or other information media
  • Permanent residence in the United States

Birth tourism (travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States to obtain U.S. citizenship for their child) is not permissible on a visitor visa.

How to Apply

There are several steps to apply for a visa. The order of these steps and how you complete them may vary by U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Please consult the instructions on the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate website .

Complete the Online Visa Application

  • Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 – Learn more about completing the DS-160 . You must: 1) complete the online visa application and 2) print the application form confirmation page to bring to your interview.
  • Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. Your photo must meet the Photograph Requirements .

Schedule an Interview

Interviews are generally required for visa applicants with certain limited exceptions below. Consular officers may require an interview of any visa applicant.

You should generally schedule an appointment for your visa interview at the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate  in the country where you live. You may schedule your interview at another U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will be present but aware that in some cases it may be more difficult to demostrate your qualifications for a visa outside of the country where you live.

Wait times for interview appointments vary by location, season, and visa category, so you should apply for your visa early. Review the interview wait time for the location where you will apply:

Appointment Wait Time

Check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Note:  Please check the individual Embassy or Consulate website to determine if your case is eligible for a waiver of the in-person interview.

Applicants scheduling visa appointments in a location different from their place of residence should check post websites for nonresident wait times.

Select a U.S. Embassy or Consulate:

Prepare for your interview.

  • Fees - Pay the non-refundable visa application fee , if you are required to pay it before your interview. If your visa is approved, you may also need to pay a visa issuance fee, if applicable to your nationality. Fee information is provided below:

Select your nationality to see Issuance Fee

  • Review the instructions available on the website of the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate  where you will apply to learn more about fee payment.

Gather Required Documentation

Gather and prepare the following required documents before your visa interview:

  • Passport valid for travel to the United States – Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States (unless exempt by country-specific agreements ). Each individual who needs a visa must submit a separate application, including any family members listed in your passport.
  • Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 confirmation page.
  • Application fee payment receipt, if you are required to pay before your interview.
  • Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. If the photo upload fails, you must bring one printed photo in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements .

Additional Documentation May Be Required

Review the instructions for how to apply for a visa on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply. Additional documents may be requested to establish if you are qualified. For example, additional requested documents may include evidence of:

  • The purpose of your trip,
  • Your intent to depart the United States after your trip, and/or
  • Your ability to pay all costs of the trip.

Evidence of your employment and/or your family ties may be sufficient to show the purpose of your trip and your intent to return to your home country. If you cannot cover all the costs for your trip, you may show evidence that another person will cover some or all costs for your trip.

Note:  Visa applicants must qualify based on their ties abroad/to their home country, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends. A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a visitor visa. If you choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support to your interview, please remember it is not one of the factors used in determining whether to issue or deny the visa.

Attend Your Visa Interview

A consular officer will interview you to determine whether you are qualified to receive a visitor visa. You must establish that you meet the requirements under U.S. law to receive a visa.  Ink-free, digital fingerprint scans are taken as part of the application process. They are usually taken during your interview, but this varies based on location.

After your visa interview, the consular officer may determine that your application requires further  administrative processing .  The consular officer will inform you if this required.

After the visa is approved, you may need to pay a visa issuance fee (if applicable to your nationality), and make arrangements for the return of the passport and visa to you.  Review the  visa processing times  to learn more.

Entering the United States

A visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States. A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. If you are allowed to enter the United States, the CBP official will provide an admission stamp or a paper Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record. Learn more about admissions and entry requirements, restrictions about bringing food, agricultural products, and other restricted/prohibited goods, and more by reviewing the CBP website .

Extending Your Stay

See  Extend Your Stay  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website to learn about requesting to extend your stay beyond the date indicated on your admission stamp or paper Form I-94.

Failure to depart the United States on time will result in being  out of status . Under U.S. law, visas of individuals who are out of status are automatically voided ( Section 222(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act ).  Any multiple entry visa that was voided due to being out of status will not be valid for future entries into the United States.

Failure to depart the United States on time may also result in you being ineligible for visas in the future. Review  Visa Denials  and  Ineligibilities and Waivers: Laws  to learn more.

Change of Status

If your plans change while in the United States (for example, you marry a U.S. citizen or receive an offer of employment), you may be able to request a change in your nonimmigrant status to another category through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). See  Change My Nonimmigrant Status  on the USCIS website to learn more.

While you are in the United States, receiving a change of status from USCIS does not require you to apply for a new visa.  However, once you depart the United States you must apply for a new visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the appropriate category for your travel.

Additional Information

  • An individual on a visitor visa (B1/B2) is not permitted to accept employment or work in the United States.
  • There is no guarantee you will be issued a visa. Do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa.
  • A valid U.S. visa in an expired passport is still valid. Unless canceled or revoked, a visa is valid until its expiration date. If you have a valid visa in your expired passport, do not remove it from your expired passport. You may use your valid visa in your expired passport along with a new valid passport for travel and admission to the United States.

Travel for Medical Treatment

If you are seeking medical treatment in the United States, the consular officer may ask for further documents at your visa interview, which may include:

  • Medical diagnosis from a local physician, explaining the nature of the ailment and the reason you need treatment in the United States.
  • Letter from a physician or medical facility in the United States, stating they are willing to treat your specific ailment and detailing the projected length and cost of treatment (including doctors’ fees, hospitalization fees, and all medical-related expenses).
  • Proof that your transportation, medical, and living expenses in the United States will be paid. This may be in the form of bank or other statements of income/savings or certified copies of income tax returns (either yours or the person or organization paying for your treatment).

Visa Renewal

Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing your visa, you will use the same application process (please review How to Apply , above). Some applicants seeking to renew their visas in certain visa classes may be eligible for the Interview Waiver (IW) which allows qualified individuals to apply for visa renewals without being interviewed in person by a U.S. consular officer. Review the instructions on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply to determine if IW is available and if you qualify.

Do I need a visa if I have an ABTC?

Yes, you will still need a visa to travel to the United States, unless you qualify for the  Visa Waiver Program . Having an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC) does not change visa requirements, your visa status, or the visa process for travel to the United States.

How can I use my ABTC when I apply for my visa?

If you have an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC), you might be able to schedule an expedited visa interview appointment. Review the instructions for scheduling expedited appointments on the website of the  embassy or consulate  where you will apply.

Visa Annotations for Certain Maritime Industry Workers

Certain foreign maritime workers are eligible to apply for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) once in the U.S. If you, as a maritime industry worker, will perform services in secure port areas, your visa must be annotated “TWIC Letter Received.” Workers whose visas are not annotated will not be permitted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to apply for a TWIC.

In order for your visa to be annotated, you must obtain a letter from your employer explaining the need for a TWIC and that you are a potential TWIC applicant. See a template example of this letter. You must present this letter when you apply for the B-1 visa. You must meet all other eligibility requirements for a B-1 visa.

Complete information about the TWIC program is available on TSA’s website at  https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic .
