Casiopea: Mid-Manhattan (Live)
One of my favorite bands since my teen years is the jazz-fusion band Casiopea. When I first heard the track “Mid-Manhattan,” I was instantly hooked.
Tetsuo Sakurai is the bassist for the group and an absolute legend and an absolute monster on 4, 5, or 6-string bass.
Check out this clip from a 2022 live show at Blues Alley in Japan!
Joshua Sailor is a session bassist, producer and engineer on the West Coast. Currently working with Cloud Microphones on the "Get Lifted" Web Series, showcasing how to use Cloudlifters in studio, live and podcasting situations. You can contact him at [email protected] .

Hello, my name is Johnny Mitchell, I’ve been playing bass for several years. I sincerely loved this instrument. I’ve been playing since I was 16 years old. At age 20 I joined the Air Force. At the time, I brought my bass with me. I had the best bass I ever had. I bought an Ibanez Rickenbacker replica at 16. While in the Air Force and as several years progressed I received orders to Kadena Air Base on Okinawa, Japan. It was a wonderful assignment. From Basic training, to technical school, I was trained to be an aircraft electrician. To make a long story short, in my off duty time I frequently visited the Air Forces’ base exchange (BX). The stereo portion of the BX constantly displayed the unbelievable sound systems on that side of the Pacific. The sound system that was displayed played one of the baddest fusion groups I’ve ever encountered. Now, I’ve been a jazz enthusiasts for years, but, I’ve never heard or seen a band like CASIOPEA. The group consists of four of baddest dudes that brought happiness to my ears. I saw them in the early 80’s. And have many of their tunes. Please check them out ? America is not savvy to them. The greatest Japanese musicians out there. I am 63, and from Brooklyn, New York. I know music. Thanks ??
Absolutely mind blowing arrangements ????
Hell yeah! Casiopea and T-Square slay
Casiopea (also known as Casiopea III or Kashiopea Kashiopea), is a Japanese jazz-fusion band that was founded in 1976 by Issei Noo, Tetsuo Sakurai and Hidehiko Kuike. Minoru Mukaiya, keyboardist, and Takashi Sasaki, drummer, joined the band, leaving Hidehiko. Their debut album Casiopea (1979), was recorded with guest appearances from American jazz musicians Randy Brecker and Michael Brecker. Akira Jimbo replaced Sasaki in 1980. Casiopea released more than 30 albums in Japan and all over the globe. Alfa Records was the first to sign them, and released their album Casiopea. Cross Point (1981), which featured ten versions of “Galactic Funk”, was released by Alfa Records. Eyes of the Mind was first released in the United States in 1981. The band then released Mint Jams (1982), which was followed by 4×4, which featured Nathan East, Harvey Mason, Lee Ritenour and Don Grusin. In 1983, the band performed their first overseas concert in the United Kingdom. The band has toured Europe and South America, Australia, as well as Southeast Asia. Casiopea was signed to Polydor in 1987. After years of musical disagreements, Jimbo and Sakurai parted ways with the band two years later. They formed the duo Jimsaku. Yoshihiro Naruse (bass), and Masaaki Hiyama, (drums) replaced them. Casiopea was then signed to Pioneer. Noriaki Kumagai, who replaced Masaaki in 1993, was the band’s new manager. The band then returned to the Alfa label and Pony Canyon a year later. Jimbo was a part of the band again in 1997, and he recorded more albums and wrote compositions. Pioneer signed the band back in 2000. Pioneer changed its name four years later to Geneon Entertainment. The group’s leader, Issei Noo, decided on August 1, 2006 to suspend all activities until further notice. In 2007, Jimbo and Noro formed Inspirit, a fusion band. In January 2009, Casiopea recorded the album Tetsudou Seminar Ongakuhen. It is based on Minoru Mokaiya’s Train Simulator videogames. Legend of Casiopea was released in a limited edition box set on May 27, 2009. This release commemorated the band’s thirty-year anniversary. It was announced on April 20th 2012 that Casiopea would be returning with Kiyomi Okaka as keyboards. This replaces Minoru Mukaiya who managed the Mukaiya Club’s music production team. From Wikipedia

The iconic multi-platinum-selling group America will celebrate their 54 th anniversary with a series of tour dates in 2024. Known for their timeless magic and powerful performances, the Grammy Award-winning perennial classic-rock favorite will draw on their deep catalog of hits including signature song “A Horse With No Name,” a Number One hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1972.
On their way to becoming a global household name, America’s journey found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best-known tunes, which also include “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “Sister Golden Hair” were cornerstones of 1970’s Top 40 and FM rock radio. Yet beyond their impressive catalog of hits, listeners would discover there was always much more to America than surface perceptions. The combination of melodic pop rock and folk-jazz elements, slinky Latin-leaning rhythms and impressionistic lyric imagery contrasted well with other more traditional country-rock leanings and highly personal lyrics.
America’s albums–six certified gold and/or platinum, with their first greatest hits collection, History, hitting four plus million in sales–displayed a fuller range of the trio’s talents than did their singles. Their material encompassed an ambitious artistic swath; from effects-laden rockers to oddball medleys to soul-bearing ballads, America displayed a flawless blend of disparate genres and styles as wide-open as the great American plains.
From their formative years, America has been a band capable of transcending borders with its uplifting music and positive message. Embracing a rainbow of divergent cultures, America’s audiences continue to grow, comprising a loyal legion of first, second and third generation fans, all bearing testament to the group’s enduring appeal.

If I'm correct, the last tour they did outside of country was in Korea, in the early 2000's. Their actual last time in Korea was in 2006, shown by this video. And they have been to Jakarta, Indonesia a few times as Casiopea 3rd. However, they probably won't be touring out of country for the foreseeable future.
