Walking Safaris

Walking safaris are where all your senses are heightened and you can see, hear, smell and feel the bush.

Game Drives

Night drives typically begin as an extension of the afternoon game drive or walking safari. As dusk falls, you'll stop to watch the sunset before setting off to discover the nocturnal wildlife. This is the prime time to encounter genets, civets, elephant shrews, porcupines, and fierce honey badgers.

Large predators, except wild dogs, are also more active after dark, enhancing your chances of thrilling sightings. Birdwatching at night is equally rewarding, with an abundance of nightjars, owls, dikkops, bat hawks, and coursers.

Star Gazing

The African night sky, free from light pollution, offers a breathtaking backdrop. The brilliance of the Milky Way and constellations like the Southern Cross, Orion, and Scorpio add to the unforgettable experience. The distant calls of lions, cicadas, and tree frogs under the crescent moon create lasting memories of the African wilderness.

Very good experience with getting quotes
I didn’t end up booking with safari.com but I did have a great experience with their consultant, Leigh-Ann Croeser. I originally wanted to book a safari at a specific lodge but it was not available for the dates we wanted. She offered suggestions and helped us secure holds on other dates. She worked hard and sent several follow up emails as she was able to hold some dates for available rooms at the original lodge! We did end up booking with another safari tour company as I sent out a few quotes at the same time and that worked out better for us but next time I would definitely consider booking with her again!

Today (December 4, 2019): Review of Time + Tide Chinzombo, South Luangwa National Park (Zambia).

  • Location:  Google maps
  • Hotel website: Time + Tide Chinzombo

Situated on a sweeping curve of the Luangwa River and designed by award-winning architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, Time + Tide Chinzombo is Zambia’s most exclusive safari lodge. Six beautiful and wildly luxurious villas combine a modern architectural feel with natural materials such as leather, reeds and canvas. Each villa boasts its own private plunge pool and is situated on an elevated deck that boasts views of the tranquil river and the abundant wildlife that frequents its banks. A winding path connects the villas with a shared lounge and dining area set in the shade of msikizi trees. A boat ride across the river gives guests direct access into the game rich Luangwa National Park.

Time + Tide Chinzombo features in my top 10 list of the best safari lodges & camps in Zambia .

PROS & THINGS I LIKE

  • Set in a private wildlife concession, Time + Tide Chinzombo offers direct access to Zambia’s flagship game reserve, the world-famous South Luangwa National Park . Locally known as ‘The Valley’, South Luangwa is incredibly scenic, especially when the late-afternoon light reflects off the Luangwa River. It’s a mix of mopane and miombo woodland, acacia shrub, grassland savannah and riverine forest. Four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo and elephant, only rhino is missing) are easily spotted in South Luangwa. Buffalo herds of over a thousand and large herds of elephant are frequent sightings, especially in the dry season.
  • Time + Tide Chinzombo enjoys a tranquil and scenic location along an expansive curve of the Luangwa River. The lodge is just across the river from South Luangwa National Park, so all game drives and other excursions within the National Park always start with a 5 min river crossing by the lodge’s private boat. Due to its slightly elevated position, the lodge’s main pavilion as well as the villas have sweeping views over the Luangwa River, the surrounding vast wilderness areas, and the wildlife that frequents the river banks. Expect to spot an abundance of elephants, hippos and crocs from the comfort and safety of the lodge!
  • Facing the river, the lodge’s contemporary open-plan main pavilion sits on white-washed decking and has been cleverly built around the existing trees, which not only provide shade but also create a striking design feature. One side of the pavilion features a covered dining area with a few tables, although meals can also be served al fresco under the shade of a tree or under the stars. The pavilion’s other side features a lovely lounge area, comprising a crescent-shaped couch, an enormous squashy beanbag, a well-stocked bar, a small library of reference books, and a circularly shaped outdoor sofa with a fire pit at its center.
  • Time + Tide Chinzombo’s minimal yet luxurious decor is designed by the top architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens – who count top Botswana camps like Jao and Mombo amongst their credits, as well as the iconic North Island resort in the Seychelles. The airy decor subtly blends modern furnishings with traditional elements such as locally produced leather, reedwork and handmade crockery, creating a classic safari ambiance. With only sustainably sourced or recycled construction materials used to create it, it’s quite clear that Time + Tide Chinzombo has a deep love for the natural beauty of its surrounding wilderness.
  • The lodge has just six enormous riverside villas (including one family unit with two bedrooms), all featuring a contemporary decor with colonial accents, creating an authentic feel that harkens back to the early days of exploration. Floor-to-ceiling gauze panels run the length of the front of each villa and give a feeling of light and space. Inside, each villa features a large master bedroom with kingsize bed (fitted with its own air-con unit) and an open-plan bathroom (equipped with a shower, his and hers washbasins and a free-standing bathtub). Each villa also has a large deck with a good-size plunge pool and a sunken lounge area.
  • Before heading out on the morning safari, the staff sets up a small buffet featuring toast, cereal, fresh fruit, freshly baked pastries, porridge, cheese and cold cuts. Eggs are cooked to order over a local campfire.
  • Lunch is usually a buffet – served around midday – that is of very high quality.
  • For dinner there is a choice of three dishes per course (which you have to select during lunch). The mouthwatering food guarantees a fine dining experience in the African bush.
  • The excellent and highly experienced staff at Time + Tide Chinzombo not only provides impeccable service but also make a strong effort to tailor each guest’s activities to suit them, rather than fitting around a specific camp schedule. Activities at the lodge are focused on the wildlife in South Luangwa National Park and include guided early morning, late afternoon and night 4WD game drives, as well as walking safaris in the park accompanied by one of the expert guides and an armed scout. You can expect world-class predator action, with especially strong sightings of the elusive leopard.
  • For the ultimate safari experience, you can book the camp’s signature ‘ sleepout under the stars ‘ experience. This extraordinary experience is an adventurous addition to any South Luangwa safari, allowing you to reconnect with nature and each other in a simple, meaningful way. Just like the early explorers, you fall asleep under a canopy of a million twinkling stars, listening to the sounds of the nighttime bush, nestled on a dry river bank flanked by grassy banks on either side. A cozy bedroll, bush loo, and culinary team ensure that this experience is as comfortable as it is memorable.
  • Dotted around the lodge are numerous photos of the legendary Norman Carr , one of the founders of Time + Tide. Way back in 1950, Carr encouraged Senior Chief Nsefu – Paramount Chief of the Kunda people in the Luangwa Valley – to set aside a portion of tribal land as a game reserve and built the first game viewing camp open to the public in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). His dream was to secure the future of this unique wilderness by ensuring that the local population would benefit through conservation of the wildlife and habitat of the Luangwa Valley. This led to the birth of Zambia’s first safari company, now known as Time + Tide.
  • Besides ultraluxe Chinzombo (which is located near the National Park entrance), Time + Tide also manages four remote lodges, located deep inside South Luangwa National Park: Luwi, Nsolo, Mchenja and Kakuli. With an emphasis on superb guiding, wildlife viewing, and an authentic bushcamp experience , these are some of my very favorite camps in Zambia. While some guests choose to stay in just one camp and base their explorations from there, I highly recommend to hop around for a few days from bushcamp to bushcamp, before moving to Chinzombo to end your safari in style.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

Time + Tide Chinzombo is Zambia’s most luxurious safari lodge, located on the edge of South Luangwa National Park. There’s little to say against the lodge, although you need to know the following before considering a stay here:

  • Time + Tide Chinzombo doesn’t have its own spa facility nor a gym . That said, the lodge does offer spa treatments in the privacy of your own villa. Ladies from the local community are trained in a range of options, from manicures and massages to body treatments and facials.
  • Game drives take place in the game-rich Mfuwe area of South Luangwa National Park, known for its numerous sightings of lions, leopards, and wild dogs. Although this central area of the park is excellent for game viewing, it is also near the main entrance of the park where there is a high concentration of lodges. So although you can get some great sightings, you will probably have to share such sightings with a number of other vehicles .

TIPS FOR FUTURE GUESTS & SAVE MONEY

  • Save money : read  here my tips for getting the best deal at a hotel like Time + Tide Chinzombo (and/or receive many free perks).
  • Read my  tips  for preparing your trip in time.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

South Luangwa has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons:

  • From November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season
  • April to July is Zambia’s winter, when the weather is cool and dry
  • August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry

In terms of game viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are the best time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb birdwatching at the end of the rains.

HOW TO GET THERE

Mfuwe is the main getaway to South Luangwa. Mfuwe Airport is reached by a 60-minute flight with Proflight from Lusaka, and flights can be directly booked on the  Proflight website (or via Time + Tide). From here a road transfer/game drive lasting approximately one hour takes guests to Chinzombo.

Chinzombo

About Chinzombo

Opened in early June 2013, Chinzombo is located on an expansive curve of the Luangwa River, overlooking the ...

... South Luangwa National Park. Run by Norman Carr Safaris, probably Zambia's oldest photographic safari company, with a track record of running first-class safari camps, and designed by two of the safari industry's leading designer/architects, this camp is a 'first' for Zambia in terms of its sheer opulence and very clean, contemporary style. However you look at it, Chinzombo is not a typical Zambian camp. It's a step more luxurious and more contemporary than any of the other camps in South Luangwa, and at least a little more costly, too. However, its food and guides are very good indeed – at the top end of Zambia's normally high standards – so if luxury is your priority, then it's perhaps worth the extra cost.

When to go to South Luangwa National Park

Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Chinzombo in South Luangwa National Park

Zambia in January

At the peak of Zambia’s rainy season, you can expect heavy rainfall for a few hours most days, with sunny spells in between. Temperatures remain high, reaching over 30ºC, with high humidity. The rainfall is yet to make a significant difference to the Victoria Falls, and the flow of water here remains low. The landscapes are green and lush and the air crystal clear, but with the abundance of water the wildlife disperses, and the thick bush can restrict sightings. It severely limits walking safaris too. Migrant birds boost the species count at this time. With seasonal rivers in flood and dirt roads and airstrips unusable, many camps in Zambia become inaccessible, and close. Only a few lodges in the central Kafue and the South Luangwa remain open. Few people visit in January, so the parks are incredibly quiet and the camps charge their lowest rates.

  • Peak of rainy season: hot & humid, with rain for a few hours most days
  • Majority of camps closed throughout the month
  • Bush incredibly green & lush, with clear air – great for photography
  • Big game dispersed & thick bush makes sightings difficult
  • Very few visitors: the cheapest time to visit

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in January

Zambia in February

February remains in the heart of the rainy season, with dramatic thunderstorms delivering a few hours of rain most days, interspersed with clear sunny skies. There is still an abundance of water in the environment, dispersing game and closing camps. With the thick bush, game viewing is limited and walking safaris restricted, but the swollen rivers allow some activities that would be unavailable in the dry season, such as boat trips on the Luangwa River. After a couple of months of rain, water will once more be making its way to the Zambezi River, and the flow of water over the Victoria Falls will start to pick up. Visitor numbers and costs at the few open camps remain low.

  • Peak of rainy season: hot & humid with rain for a few hours most days
  • Most camps closed throughout the month
  • Bush lush & green: good for photography but poor for game viewing
  • Very few visitors, & the cheapest time to visit
  • Water levels at Victoria Falls still low, but starting to pick up

March is the last month of the rainy season in Zambia, and there are still heavy downpours most days. Water levels are at their highest making it difficult to get around the country. Temperatures still reach over 30ºC most days, too, with the rain causing high levels of humidity. Many camps remain closed, and the thick bush limits game viewing and walking safaris. However, many animals are raising young at this time of year, with predators taking advantage of the easy prey, so sightings can be incredible, if sporadic. Wild dogs in the South Luangwa are particularly active at this time of year. With clear air and increasingly frequent blue skies as a backdrop, photography can be spectacular. The birding remains excellent as thousands of birds prepare for their winter migration.

  • Peak of rainy season, hot & humid, with rain for a few hours most days
  • Bush remains green & lush: good for photography but poor game viewing
  • High abundance of animals with young

Weather in March

Zambia in April

As the rains change from intense downpours to lighter and sporadic showers, April is very much a transitionary period in Zambia. The landscape remains exceptionally green and lush, with sparse viewing of larger wildlife. Although camps start to reopen in April, most remain closed, and others that were open at the start of the year may shut to prepare for the coming dry season. This is the first month of the year when it’s possible to visit the Lower Zambezi. The Zambezi River will be at its highest level with the Victoria Falls in full flow, but with huge amounts of spray kicked up views of the waterfall are often obscured.

  • Tail end of the rainy season; hot & humid with light rain most days
  • Some camps reopen; possible to visit the Lower Zambezi
  • Bush still green & lush: good for photography; poor for game viewing
  • Victoria Falls in full flow but with poor views

Weather in April

Zambia in May

May is typically the first month of the dry season. While there is the chance of an odd shower, the majority of days are clear and sunny. As winter approaches, temperatures start to drop, with most days reaching highs of around 26ºC. As the landscape dries out, access to the parks improves, and all but the most remote bushcamps reopen. After five months of rain there is still a lot of standing water, but despite the thick bush May marks a distinct improvement in game viewing, and clear air is a continuing bonus for photographers. The end of the month can be a popular time for visitors, taking advantage of typically good weather, improved game viewing, and the last of the low-season rates offered by the camps.

  • Start of the dry season in a typical year, with mostly clear & sunny
  • Majority of camps open
  • Bush still green & lush, with clear air for photographers
  • Game viewing starts to improve
  • Last month of low rates at the camps

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in May

Zambia in June

Zambia sees virtually no rainfall in June, with a strong chance of sunny days throughout. The humidity drops dramatically and, as winter approaches, temperatures reduce, falling to around 10ºC at night but still warming to 25ºC during the day. The landscape remains lush but the bush starts to die back significantly, improving visibility for game viewing and walking safaris. All the camps in the South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi are open by the start of June. While some have a ‘shoulder season’, others start charging their highest rates. The water coming over the Victoria Falls starts to recede, reducing the mist and spray kicked up, providing better views of the waterfall itself.

  • Reliably sunny days, but dropping temperatures, especially at night.
  • All camps in the South Luangwa, southern Kafue & Lower Zambezi open
  • Wildlife viewing continuing to improve
  • Increased visibility & cool weather perfect for walking safaris.
  • Viewing of the Victoria Falls at its best

A very good time to visit

Weather in June

Zambia in July

As the dry season continues, vegetation and long grasses have mostly died back and water starts to become scarce. Wildlife starts to cluster around the major sources of water and the game viewing approaches its best. July is the first month of winter, and while daytime temperatures are in the 20s Celsius, temperatures at night can drop to single digits. Early morning and late evening drives in open vehicles are particularly cold, and blankets and hot water bottles are often provided. Visitor numbers increase significantly and space at popular/small camps can get tight. Nearly all properties are now charging their highest rates. Even floodwaters on northern Kafue’s Busanga Plains have now receded, and all camps in Zambia are open.

  • Warm, dry days; cold, crisp nights
  • Significantly improved game viewing
  • Walking safaris are unrestricted by vegetation, with good temperatures
  • Approaching peak season, so significant increase in costs
  • Northern Kafue now accessible

Weather in July

Zambia in August

By August, the vegetation has died back and wildlife is now congregating around the remaining water sources, providing excellent game viewing. With virtually no chance of rain you are almost guaranteed sunny days, although dust and smoke in the air means a visible haze starts to appear on the horizon. Temperatures can drop below 5ºC at night but climb to the 20s Celsius during the day. Jackets and gloves are recommended for morning and evening drives. This is one of the most popular – and most expensive – months to travel. European school holidays have little impact on travel within Zambia, but they do increase international flight costs, and all camps are charging their highest rates.

  • Very dry with warm days but cold nights
  • Excellent wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around water holes.
  • Haze developing on the horizon, potentially affecting photographs
  • Cool temperatures & clear sightlines: ideal for walking safaris
  • Peak season: camps & flights at their most expensive

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in August

Zambia in September

September is the most popular, and arguably the best, time of year to travel. Rain is almost unheard of so humidity is low, and temperatures are starting to climb. Morning drives are more comfortable, with daytime temperatures normally in the low 30s Celsius. Water is scarce, so wildlife clusters around the few remaining sources. Game viewing is very nearly at its best, with a good chance of seeing interactions between species. Camps are charging their highest rates and are at their busiest, with popular camps often fully booked more than a year in advance. A significant haze sometimes appears on the horizon, impacting on landscape views and affecting photography. Depending on the rainfall in the wet season, the Victoria Falls can start looking dry, with more cliff face than waterfall on show.

  • Dry hot days with clear skies, & warm nights
  • One of the best months for wildlife viewing
  • Dust & smoke creates a haze over the landscape
  • Peak season: camps are expensive & often full
  • Victoria Falls starting to look dry

Weather in September

Zambia in October

As the dry season peaks, the landscape in October is brown and barren, with little ground-level vegetation, though the promise of rain may bring the occasional shower. Temperatures can be uncomfortably hot, reaching over 40ºC in the daytime and rarely dropping below 20ºC at night. This is particularly challenging on walking safaris and in camps without air conditioning. A thick haze on the horizon sometimes turns photographic backgrounds grey-brown rather than sky-blue. The lack of water sees hippos and crocodiles cram themselves into the few remaining shallow rivers, with other wildlife carefully skirting around them in order to drink. Game viewing is at its absolute best, and you’re most likely to see hunts in October. On the Zambian side, stretches of the Victoria Falls become a dry cliff face.

  • The best month for wildlife viewing
  • Very hot both night & day, with little chance of rain
  • Air can be very hazy with dust & smoke, so not great for photography
  • Victoria Falls largely dry on Zambian side
  • Camps less busy & some start to drop their rates

Weather in October

Zambia in November

November typically marks the end of the dry season. Although the timing of the rains is always uncertain, temperatures remain reliably high and the humidity builds as the rains approach. While you may avoid the rains in the first week of November, it’s not unusual to see some spectacularly heavy thunderstorms, followed by an explosion of green growth. Wildlife disperses rapidly after the rains, no longer restricted to limited waterholes closely monitored by predators. However, Kasanka’s bat migration is at its peak, and wildebeest gather on Liuwa Plains. Many remote camps close, and those that remain open significantly drop their rates. The initial rains have little impact on the Victoria Falls, but do significantly reduce the atmospheric haze.

  • Typically the start of the wet season; very hot and humid
  • Increased chance of heavy rain as the month progresses
  • Greatly diminished game viewing once the rains arrive
  • Bat migration in Kasanka, and wildebeest migration in Liuwa
  • Camp rates lower, & visitor numbers reduced

Weather in November

Zambia in December

December is typically the first month in Zambia’s rainy season, with heavy thunderstorms most days interspersed by sunny spells. Temperatures start to fall, but still reach over 30ºC in the daytime, with high levels of humidity. As the rainfall increases it brings plentiful water into the landscape, encouraging the growth of thick green vegetation. Wildlife remains in the national parks and sightings are possible, but overall game viewing is poor. Access to the parks becomes problematic and all but a handful of camps around the entrance to the South Luangwa and the centre of Kafue national parks close. Those that do remain open charge their lowest rates and are very quiet. The rain removes any smoke and dust from the air, returning the sky to a dazzling blue that is great for photographers.

  • Start of rainy season, with hot, humid & wet days
  • Poor game viewing as wildlife disperses & bush thickens
  • Majority of camps close; others charge their lowest rates
  • Landscape green with blue skies; photographic opportunities improve
  • Victoria Falls still dry

Zambia

Zambia is Africa's best kept secret, with its vast landscapes, thriving wildlife and welcoming culture. Trace the steps of early explorers while experiencing immersive safaris in the South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi. Two of Zambia's most spectacular National Parks with diverse activities and renowned guiding with deep roots in early conservation for generations.

Madagascar, an island nation off the southeast coast of Africa, is celebrated for its unique biodiversity and vibrant culture. Home to species and ecosystems found nowhere else on Earth, it offers a vivid exploration of nature's rarities. Discover the unexplored on land and sea.

Our regions

  • South Luangwa
  • Lower Zambezi

Just a one hour flight from Lusaka, the South Luangwa is known for its big cat sightings and often referred to as the Valley of the Leopard. It is in the South Luangwa that the legendary Norman Carr pioneered the walking safari and conservation-based tourism in Africa. Zambia's outstanding reputation of guiding is ever prevalent in our team with some of our guides having trained with Norman himself.  Our guides offer guests a raw, authentic safari experience and don't let the finer details in these vast spaces pass you by.

Nestled between the imposing mountain escarpment to the north and the mighty Zambezi River to the south, the Lower Zambezi Valley has a variety of activities that few, if any, other destinations can offer. It has been described by guests as their "happy place" because of its beautiful scenery, peaceful riverside woodlands and abundant wildlife. The Lower Zambezi is just a short 30 minute flight from Lusaka and offers guests the thrill of tiger-fishing to peaceful wildlife sightings on the banks of the river while canoeing or boating. Our guides strive to make each guest feel like they are part of the landscape and not a mere spectator.

Just off the northwest coast of Madagascar, a short boat ride from Nosy Be, Nosy Komba is an island celebrated for its lush volcanic landscapes and vibrant culture. Often referred to as the 'forest gem of the Indian Ocean', it provides a spectacular backdrop for Time + Tide Tsara Komba. The lodge blends luxury with nature, offering guests direct access to both the pristine forests and the azure waters of the surrounding archipelago. Known for sustainable luxury and immersive experiences, our guides are expertly trained to reveal the secrets of Nosy Komba’s rich biodiversity and local traditions.

Time + Tide Chinzombo

Stop. Listen. Look closer.

Time + Tide has pioneered to make the most remote destinations accessible across Africa. Our camps at Time + Tide Safaris are interconnected through the rivers, starting in South Luangwa’s tributaries and flowing into the Luangwa River as it bends and heads down to the Chongwe River. The journey continues as the rivers join the mighty Zambezi and plunge into the Indian Ocean, carrying our story across to Madagascar, with Nosy Komba off the northwest coast across to our exclusive private island off the northeast coast – Miavana by Time + Tide. We are guides and guardians to some of the most beautiful places on Earth, with a family of luxury properties in Zambia and Madagascar.

Our natural responsibility

Be part of our story and help us continue to preserve the wild places we treasure for generations to come.

At the core of Time + Tide are our values, focusing on four pillars – replenishing the wild, treading mindfully, supporting local communities and our Time + Tide Foundation . Our Foundation consists of a dedicated team that works tirelessly with local leaders to publicly promote health, advance female education, conserve wildlife, and support inclusive diverse education and women empowerment. With every year that passes, greater inroads are made to ensure that communities in which we operate benefit from Time + Tide’s presence.

chinzombo safari lodge

Time+Tide Chinzombo

If you want luxury in the bush look no further than Time + Tide Chinzombo ! By far the most glamorous boutique lodge in the valley, it is like staying in a 5-star hotel in the wilderness. From the excellent staff who are attentive to your every need to the incredible food the chefs serve to your incredibly spacious open room and let’s not forget the first-rate guiding.

“I loved the stylish, sophisticated and clean-cut décor throughout the Lodge and rooms, the friendly and warm welcome from the hosts and delicious cocktail on arrival. Fell in love with the comfortable lounge set in the main area looking over the river bank, the delicious cuisine; most of it locally sourced from around the area which really impressed me. The Room itself was extremely comfortable, a bed situated to look out onto the panoramic views, a stocked mini bar, fan and aircon. With top class, knowledgeable and entertaining guides, comfy vehicles and incredible game-viewing around the area Time + Tide Chinzombo ticked all the boxes, it was safari paradise.”

Last visited by Jen Hagger – Sales & Marketing – December 2018

Exceptional member of staff: Gloria, Host: The host at Chinzombo, Gloria is such a warm and welcoming host, we felt that if we needed anything at all she would go out of her way to make it happen – but in true Chinzombo style, we didn’t want for anything!

Often when we talk about safaris we think of a tent, a small tent. That is not the case at Time + Tide Chinzombo, here you will stay in the utmost opulence. There are six villas, each with air-con over the huge beds, a sweeping en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower, free-standing bathtub (big enough for two) and free WiFi! The villas are all open with views across the valley which can be kept up or down depending on the level of privacy or ‘openness’ you wish to have. This is one of the few places you will be tempted to skip a drive and spend all day in your room. Which of course you can as the wildlife roams freely round camp too!

If you are hoping to treat that special person in your life then you couldn’t do much better than taking them to Time + Tide Chinzombo. Luxury at every turn, from the beautiful rooms to the spa to discovering the wildlife together. Imagine waking up to the chirping of the birds before a quick breakfast, and then exploring the valley on a safari and getting to watch a herd of elephants cross the river, before returning to ‘camp’ for your private lunch and indulging in a couple’s massage.

After an indulgent, afternoon nap in your giant bed, you head out on safari stopping for a sundowner, sipping a gin and tonic as the sun sets over the Luangwa River, listening to the hippos gently calling as they start to head out for the night. Then you will head back to your luxurious lodge and share a romantic bubble bath together before a starlit dinner under the stars. Surely that will impress your loved one!

We often talk of an “African massage”, you know, the gentle smack your body receives as you drive around the bumpy terrain of the park! Well, at Time + Tide Chinzombo, you can get a proper massage, one your body will thank you for. A safari is a holiday; however, you can often feel a little tired by the end. Why not indulge (yes more – you are on holiday!) in a little pampering before you head on your onward journey or home. Better still, the ladies come to your room where they have a variety of options to treat you with. Each stay also comes with a luscious free foot massage-even if you haven’t been on a walking safari this is pure bliss.

A Perfect Safari Camp

have been to many safaris and Chinzombo is one of the best I have ever stayed!

The main area and the luxury tent is stylish and cozy, the food and safari guiding is top standard, the camp is right by the river and guests can hear the hippos 24 hours a day.

We did a short walking safari and we love it! South Luangwa is a huge park with many accommodations but Chinzombo is definitely one of the bests.

Modern Design paired with superb guiding

While the design of the lodge is very modern – which might put some people off – the location is stunning and the rooms and common area are well laid out. The guiding is top notch, which Comes from the fact, that nearly all the guides used to be Walking safari guides. Landscape is diverse and wildlife is abundant.

Simply perfect

We stayed here for 5 nights and it had been just a perfect time. Beautiful villas along the river bank with privacy from other guests but st the same time wonderfully surrounded by wildlife. Sometimes you can see hippos or even elephants walking in front of your room while you are lying in your bed and there will be just a mosquito net between you and them! Very gentle staff, good food and just unforgettable experiences in the park! Just wonderful.

Chinzombo offers a fantastic luxury experience. The arrival is beautiful – a short boat ride across the Luangwa to the most luxurious safari lodge I’ve been to, and that includes some of the best in Kenya. The staff do a great welcome, the food was great and the service was perfect. Our guide Abraham was the most knowledgeable person I’ve ever been on safari with, especially on bird life.

The most luxurious camp in all of the South Luangwa!

Chinzombo

Facilities tabs

As the flagship Norman Carr property in South Luangwa, Chinzombo goes above and beyond in terms of its luxury accommodation. Sat on the curve of the Luangwa River, Chinzombo and its six spacious villas offer panoramic views overlooking the frequent wildlife that visit the river. Award-winning architecture, award-winning interior design and award-winning guiding… what more could you want?

Chinzombo is located on private land overlooking the national park. A small boat ride (which takes all of one minute) will transfer guests over to the national park on the other side, where the game drives will begin. The game drives are done in the Mfuwe area which is the most productive and prolific game areas, but the downside to this is that it does tend to get busy.

The property was designed by Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, two both award-winning architects who have brought Chinzombo to life. The camp is made of six luxury villas, each with their own private plunge pools overlooking the river. The main area is all open-plan, with the bar, lounge and dining area all designed to combine the indoor and outdoor living together. The main area is full off incredible photographs of Norman Carr which tells the story of his exploration and adventure in the South Luangwa Valley.

The six villas in Chinzombo are simply breathtaking. They feature everything you would expect from a luxury safari experience – air-con units, minibar, Wi-Fi, private verandas, free-standing baths, plunge pools, sunbeds and a very inviting king size bed. The design is contemporary and elegant, with subtle reminders of the history behind the camp – photographs of legendary Norman Carr hanging from the canvas.

Chinzombo is on an all-inclusive basis so accommodation, drinks and game viewing activities are all included. Game drives, bush walks and boat cruises (seasonal) are offered and each guided by professional guides – one of whom many of them will have probably worked with Norman themselves. Shaddy is a guide and head of logistics and as he used to work with Norman himself, he is quite the story teller!

Chinzombo Camp Facilities:

  • ROOMS - 6 spacious villas
  • SAFARI ACTIVITIES - Game drives, bush walks, boat cruises (seasonal)
  • POOL - private plunge pools
  • PRIVATE DINING - yes
  • AIRCON - yes

Definitely a ‘wow-factor’ property in all senses

Chinzombo Safari Lodge – South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Named after a type of tree which grows near camp, Time + Tide Chinzombo’s natural building materials and vintage accents blend modern style with the best of a traditional bush safari camp. Its six spacious luxury safari tents (including a two-bedroom, two-bathroom family tent) rest beneath ancient msikizi trees. Each has a private pool and soaking tub with panoramic views over the river and its abundant wildlife.

The luxury safari tents’ award-winning design features canvas, timber and reed, accented with leather and raw linen. Each stretches out onto a shaded verandah where you can while away the afternoon or unwind with an in-room spa treatment. Down a winding path, the main lodge beckons. Lounge on the riverfront sun deck with a book from the open-air library. Enjoy dinner under the stars, made with produce we grow ourselves. Sip a drink at the bar while browsing through old books and photos or around the fire pit suspended high atop the river bank.

This is one of the most game-rich areas of South Luangwa National Park. A little bit about South Luangwa

Very few places in Africa can offer the unique combination of South Luangwa National Park's open, grassy plains and mature, mesmerizing woodlands, crowned with the pristine, impressive Luangwa River. This area's reputation for abundant wildlife and unspoiled vegetation is well earned, so whether driving around or walking through, the intense beauty calls to you from every corner.

South Luangwa National Park is the highlight of eastern Zambia. Known to locals as simply 'the South Park,' it was initially founded as the Luangwa Game Park in 1904, and converted to one of three game reserves in 1938. The impressive park covers an area of about 9050 square kilometers of the Luangwa Valley floor, and lies anywhere from 500 meter to 800 meter above sea level. With its western and northwestern edge bounded by the Muchinga Escarpment, and the southern border lined with the meandering Luangwa River, there's no shortage of dramatic and fascinating topography in this stunning game-rich park.

The Norman Carr Chinzombo camp were absolutely fantastic, the guiding especially. The boat trips across the river to get to the game vehicles is also a plus. The rooms are massive with absolutely stunning views over the river. * * * * * - R. Lloyd-Jones
We loved this camp. Best guide and scout of the trip. They were top professionals and both had an unbelievable depth of knowledge. Walking safaris were great. The managers and all the staff did not miss a thing. Food was excellent. I would be happy to return to this camp again. As a matter of fact, I would love to try a full NC safari in Zambia. * * * * * - C Nimmo
Zambia -- exceeded all expectations. I'm told that Norman Carr is known for its guides and I would concur. All of our guides were terrific - We had Friday at Luwi and Nsolo, Brian at Mchenja and Shaddy at Chinzombo. Brian and Shaddy are old hands and are as good as any guides we have had on our trips. Friday is the newest guide but he was also great and a truly nice young man. We liked all the camps and it is hard to pick a favorite. The 4 of us would probably each select differently. Luwi and Nsolo are small and secluded and really designed for walking. Time to look for the little things and my wife enjoys that. We did not see many cats are these 2 camps but we did see one magnificent lion who was with one female and cub on a kudu kill. Of course, the female made the kill which was evident from the blood on her face. It was a large kill so the male even tolerated some play from the cub. We did walk some at Luwi and we did the camp out at Nsolo and the guys made the trek to the camp site in the dry river bed. They were able to accommodate our late request for the camp out which was greatly appreciated. We all enjoyed it and celebrated Ann Newton's birthday under the stars. Mchenja was my favorite because the wildlife was great. We saw both lion prides (13 and 9 respectively) and witnessed a successful night time hunt by the Hollywood pride. That was really something. They took down 2 puku and we watched 7 of the lions devour one -- it was not a pretty sight as the puku survived for a quite a while. We also saw 2-3 leopard here, giraffes and lots of elephants. We also saw a Pels fishing owl at night and I'm told that is quite a sighting. Chinzombo was a great place to end our stay in the bush. Even more luxury than Chitabi and Savuti and with internet to boot. Shaddy is an amazing guide and likes to avoid the crowds. We saw 5-6 leopard with him, a genet on a kill (mongoose?) and another genet hunting. * * * * * - D Trice
