This wikiHow shows you how to enable Flash Player on in Safari and Chrome for macOS. If you're using Safari, you'll need to download and install Adobe Flash Player from Adobe's website. If you're using Chrome, there's no need to install additional apps.

Support for Adobe Flash ends in December 2020. After that time, it will no longer be possible to use Flash.

Enabling Flash on Safari

• If you don't want Flash to run automatically, select Ask instead. You'll be prompted to approve Flash any time a website tries to display it.

Safari 14 completely removed support for Adobe Flash, so you are done viewing Flash content in that browser. Firefox still supports Flash until Jan 2021's Firefox 85, but it is not enabled by default in Firefox settings. At the end of this year, Adobe is flushing the toilet, and no one will have access to Flash, and the websites that have failed to migrate to streaming HTML5 web content will be unvisited islands.

How to enable Adobe Flash Player on a Mac computer using Safari

Adobe Flash Player is a plugin that allows you to interact with sites that offer multimedia experiences, like games and animation. 

Enabling Adobe Flash Player on your Mac is easily done, provided you have it installed and you know which version of the Safari browser you're using.

Note, however, that support for Adobe Flash Player will be ending in 2020 — these instructions work for now, but they may soon become outdated once Adobe ends the service.

For these directions, you'll need to know the version of Safari you're using. To find out, open Safari, click "Safari" in the top toolbar and then choose "About Safari."

Here's what you need to do to enable Adobe Flash Player if you have Safari version 11.0 or newer:

1. First of all, make sure that you have Adobe Flash Player downloaded. Go here if you need it.

2. Open Safari.

3. Click "Safari" in the top toolbar, then choose "Preferences."

4. Toggle over to "Websites."

5. If necessary, scroll down to the plugins section in the left toolbar.

6. Check the box to enable Adobe Flash Player.

From that screen, you'll also be able to set Adobe Flash Player to automatically stay on, ask you to turn on, or be disabled when you visit other websites.

If you have an earlier version of Safari, you'll still have to go through Safari's "Preferences" to enable Flash Player. But instead of using the "Websites" tab, toggle over to the "Security" tab. 

Then, make sure that the boxes next to "Enable Javascript" and "Allow Plug-ins" are checked. After that, you'll either click "Plugin Settings" or "Manage Website Settings" (you'll see different prompts depending on your version of Safari).

Those with version 10 or newer (but still older than Safari 11) should continue on to step four, as listed above. Those with versions earlier than 10 will need to select the "When visiting other websites" menu, then choose "On" for Adobe Flash Player.

By now, you’ve probably heard that the future of Adobe Flash isn’t bright. Plagued by security issues, Adobe Flash has always been a thorn in the flesh of software developers such as Apple and Microsoft, who finally said that enough is enough and decided to get rid of it. In this article, we explain why Adobe Flash matters and why you, as a Mac user, should care about its inevitable demise.

The Origin of Adobe Flash

Adobe Flash started its arduous life in the 90s, when its precursor, named SmartSketch, was published by FutureWave Software. The rising popularity of the internet at the time made FutureWave Software realize that their vector drawing application had had the potential to challenge Macromedia Shockwave, a multimedia platform for building interactive multimedia applications and video games.

In 1995, FutureWave Software approached Adobe Systems and offered SmartSketch for sale. Adobe Systems, however, declined the offer, which led to FutureWave Software getting acquired by Macromedia and its subsequent rebranding to Macromedia Flash 1.0. Under Macromedia’s patronage, Flash quickly gained both market share and new features, including scripting and data access capabilities.

In 2005, Macromedia was acquired by Adobe Systems for approximately $3.4 billion. Adobe Systems added support for the ActionScript 3.0 programming language, improved the animation capabilities of Flash, included a 3D engine that allowed basic object transformations in 3D space, and allowed GPU-accelerated 3D rendering for Flash applications and games on desktop platforms, just to name a few noteworthy improvements.

The End of Adobe Flash

By the beginning of this decade, Adobe Flash, including Flash for Mac, has already established itself as a popular multimedia platform for building interactive multimedia applications and video games. In 2011, Flash was included in 99 percent of desktop browsers. Unfortunately for Flash, the platform had already entered the last stage of its life by that time.

In an open letter titled Thoughts on Flash, Steve Jobs explained why he decided not to include support for Flash in iOS, “Adobe’s Flash products are 100% proprietary. They are only available from Adobe, and Adobe has sole authority as to their future enhancement, pricing, etc. While Adobe’s Flash products are widely available, this does not mean they are open, since they are controlled entirely by Adobe and available only from Adobe. By almost any definition, Flash is a closed system.”

Most Apple shareholders would most likely consider this to be a good-enough reason to adopt HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and other open standards instead, but Jobs had more reasons to stay away from Flash. “Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know firsthand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now. We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash,” he said.

Apple wasn’t the only company that was sick and tired of the security plaguing Flash. As such, nobody was surprised when Adobe released a press release, officially stating that the company was planning to stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020.

“Adobe will continue to support Flash on a number of major OSs and browsers that currently support Flash content through the planned EOL. This will include issuing regular security patches, maintaining OS and browser compatibility and adding features and capabilities as needed.”

While most major websites have already moved away from Flash and, just like Apple, embraced HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript, some still depend on the deprecated technology, forcing many Mac users to keep Adobe Flash for Mac installed on their computers. If you count yourself among them, the first thing you should do is ensure that you’re using the latest version of Flash.

How to Update Adobe Flash Player for Mac?

To update Flash Player Mac, complete the following steps:

• Open Apple’s Spotlight app by pressing the command key on your keyboard and hitting the space bar.
• Type Flash Player.
• You should see an option titled “Flash Player.prefPane” under System Preferences. Click on it.
• Go to the Updates tab.
• Click on the Check Now button.
• If Adobe Flash Player finds any available updates, it will prompt you.

Since Adobe no longer supports Flash Player after December 31, 2020 and blocked Flash content from running in Flash Player beginning January 12, 2021, Adobe strongly recommends all users immediately uninstall Flash Player to help protect their systems.

Adobe Flash has been retired for years, and from a security standpoint, you should stop using it. But what if you have to use it? How can you run .SWF files or play online games from the good old days? Here's what you need to know about running old Flash content.

Just in case you hadn't heard, Flash has officially been retired . Flash has security problems and doesn't run on mobile platforms like iPhone, iPad, and Android. Modern websites have replaced Flash with modern web standards. In fact, Flash is the last browser plug-in to vanish, following in the footsteps of Oracle Java, Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Shockwave, Apple QuickTime, and others.

Official support for Flash ended on December 31, 2020. Adobe removed download links for Flash from its website and ceased security updates.

Adobe has even included a kill switch for Flash content. On January 12, 2021, the most recent versions of the Adobe Flash plug-in stopped running Flash content.

While Adobe has done everything it can to block Flash content from ever running again on the web, there are still some workarounds.

If you can avoid running Flash, we strongly recommend letting go of it. You may be hesitant to do so if you have software or a website that depends on it, but there's no time like the present to make the transition. Adobe has planned the end of Flash since 2017, and Flash just isn't coming back.

If you are in a position where you rely on Flash in some form, however, you're not entirely out of luck. We'll explain your options. But again, if there is anyway to avoid using Flash you should take advantage of it.

Adobe has removed all download links for Flash from its website, which means you can't even download the final version (released in December 2020) from an official source.

The company also built a kill switch into Flash from version 32.0.0.387 onward. If you're using that version or later, Flash content simply won't run anymore. You'll see an "Adobe Flash Player is blocked" or "Adobe Flash Player is No Longer Supported" message on websites in Google Chrome, for example.

According to Andkon Arcade , the last version of the plug-in that doesn't include the killswitch is 32.0.0.371. For Flash content hosted on the web to run in your browser, you'll need to be using an outdated version of the plug-in. We cannot recommend that you do this in good faith, particularly considering the security issues that hounded Flash until the day it was shut down.

Flash used the .SWF file extension for exported content designed to be embedded in a web page. These files could also be opened on the desktop using Adobe Flash Player, but that's no longer the case.

So what do you do if you have an .SWF file that you rely on, or you want to look at an old project or website that you made in Flash? One option is to take the outdated Flash Player route outlined below. Create a virtual machine, install Flash 32.0.0.371 and a compatible browser, then import your .SWF files into the virtual machine.

A better option is to use the open-source Flash Player emulator Ruffle . This free download is compatible with modern operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. Once it's installed, you can simply double-click an .SWF file, choose to open in Ruffle, and enjoy. You can also use it from the command line by typing:

Lightspark is another open-source Flash player for Windows and Linux that aims to support all Flash formats. The project was updated as recently as mid-2020, but currently supports only around 76% of Flash APIs, which means that some things simply aren't going to work, as evidenced on the support status page .

The aforementioned Ruffle is another alternative, and we'd recommend using it over Lightspark.

Streaming video websites like YouTube once relied on video players that were created in Flash. These players could play video in the Flash Video (.FLV) format since retired in favor of MP4. Fortunately, Flash Video support is widespread and doesn't require Flash Player or an emulator.

You can use a free media player like VLC or MPV to open FLV files just as you would any other video file.

If you have a Flash animation or movie on your website, consider recording it as a video and uploading that instead. The easiest way of doing this would be to download Flash emulator Ruffle, launch the .SWF file on your local computer, and record it using screen recording software . If the video is in .FLV format, you can convert it with something like Handbrake and upload an .MP4 instead.

If your website is constructed entirely in Flash, it might be time to think about creating a new website. If you have elements of your existing website that you would like to preserve, Ruffle can help you out. The emulator uses a single line of JavaScript to automatically convert Flash content on the fly, with no download required by visitors.

If you encounter problems, make sure that your web server is configured to serve .WASM (Web Assembly) files correctly. Keep in mind that visitors will need to click on a "play" button for Ruffle to work.

If you want to take a trip down memory lane and relive some of the Flash games and animations of the late 1990s and early 2000s, you'll be pleased to learn that many classics have been preserved.

BlueMaxima's Flashpoint is a Flash game and animation project that runs locally on your Windows computer, with Mac and Linux versions under development. You can download the entire archive for offline use, or pick and choose by downloading games on the fly.

The Internet Archive has also put together an archive of Flash classics , with over 2,500 items in the collection so far. These work in any browser that supports Web Assembly thanks to Ruffle, with no downloads required.

And, of course, the entire Newgrounds library is still available. In order to use Newgrounds natively, you can either use the Windows-only (and somewhat outdated) Newgrounds Player , or you can download the Ruffle browser extension and try that instead.

We really do advise against running an outdated version of Flash. It has security vulnerabilities, and there are no more legitimate, official download sources. We include this information here for informational purposes only. You're on your own.

If you were to run an older version of Flash that still technically works, you should probably do so in a secure environment like a virtual machine . Free apps like VirtualBox (and premium ones like VMWare ) can create a virtualized environment that poses no immediate threat to your system. In essence, you're running an operating system on top of your existing operating system.

To do this, set up a virtual machine and install the operating system of your choice (Windows is a good choice.). From here, download a browser that's still compatible with Flash 32.0.0.371 (which came out in May 2020) and find a mirror for the same version of Flash. No official downloads are available, and we can't recommend any third-party sources for this.

With your virtual machine set up, launch the browser, install Flash (make sure that you disable automatic updates), and navigate to your Flash content. Depending on how powerful your computer is, you may run into performance issues, since virtualization is demanding. Ideally, you'll be using your outdated setup to only access web pages on a closed intranet. If you venture onto the world wide web, avoid disclosing any login credentials, payment details, or any similar information.

It's critical that you don't natively run an outdated version of Flash on your main computer that's connected to the internet, as this presents a huge security risk.

Many animations and cartoons have been recorded separately and uploaded to YouTube, including Homestar Runner . Also, some games that originally used Flash have gone on to become standalone hits, including Super Meat Boy .

But an enormous number of websites still use Flash, and these solutions (particularly Ruffle) should help you continue to enjoy this content without constantly worrying about the security issues that plagued the platform.

About Flash Player

Adobe Flash Player is a computer software, distributed as freeware, that has allowed users to play Adobe Flash content. The content has often included multimedia content, internet applications and streaming audio and video. It was once a common format for web games and animations. For quite some time – about ten years – Apple hasn’t pre-loaded Adobe Flash Player on Mac. Users had to install it from Adobe, and then, once it was installed, give permission for each website to run the Flash Plugin.

More recently, most browsers have already been phasing out their support for Flash Player. None of the major browsers are expected to support Flash Player after December 31st. With the release of version 14, Safari no longer supports Flash; Flash Player no longer loads and Flash content will not play in Safari 14.

Why is it Ending?

Should I Uninstall Flash Player?

Once Flash Player’s support ends, there will be no more security updates. This means that keeping Flash Player installed poses a significant security threat and, for that reason, all users are encouraged to remove it from their systems before the EOL date.

Most browsers will no longer support Flash Player and so the software will not run on updated versions of browsers such as Safari, Chrome and Firefox after December.

You may be concerned that some of the websites or resources you use, still require Flash Player, however, very few websites still use Flash, and it has never been supported on iOS devices.

Flash Player will no longer be available for download after December 31st and although copies of it may be found on third-party sites, it is highly recommended that you do not download unauthorized copies of Flash Player from third-party sites. Not only will these copies carry the risks that come from not having available security updates, but the third-party copies of Flash Player may very well come with malware attached.

How to Uninstall

It is easy to uninstall a program from your Mac . Although the latest version of Safari, Safari 14, no longer supports Flash Player, you may still have it installed on your system. You may also have been using Flash Player with another browser like Chrome or Firefox or an older version of Safari. Even if you won’t be using a browser that supports Flash Player, you may still want to uninstall it to remove the unused files from your computer. To uninstall Flash Player:

• Open Finder. From the menu bar at the top of your screen select Go, then select Utilities from the dropdown menu.
• Double click on Adobe Flash Player Install Manager.

• Click on Uninstall.

• Enter your user name and password.

• If prompted, close applications like Safari and click Retry.
• You will see a window verifying that Flash Player was removed from your system.

What is ruffle

Ruffle is a Flash Player emulator written in Rust. Ruffle runs natively on all modern operating systems as a standalone application, and on all modern browsers through the use of WebAssembly. Leveraging the safety of the modern browser sandbox and the memory safety guarantees of Rust, we can confidently avoid all the security pitfalls that Flash had a reputation for. Ruffle puts Flash back on the web, where it belongs - including browsers on iOS and Android!

Designed to be easy to use and install, users or website owners may install the web version of Ruffle and existing flash content will "just work", with no extra configuration required. Ruffle will detect all existing Flash content on a website and automatically "polyfill" it into a Ruffle player, allowing seamless and transparent upgrading of websites that still rely on Flash content.

Ruffle is an entirely open source project maintained by volunteers. We're all passionate about the preservation of internet history, and we were drawn to working on this project to help preserve the many websites and plethora of content that will no longer be accessible when users can no longer run the official Flash Player. Installing the browser extension

If you visit websites that have Flash content but aren't using Ruffle, or you want to ensure you're using the latest and greatest version of Ruffle on every website, then our browser extension is the perfect thing for you!

The easiest way to install Ruffle on Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Opera, and Brave is through the Chrome Web Store . The easiest way to install Ruffle on Firefox is through addons.mozilla.org .

These update whenever new builds release. We also offer unsigned nightly extensions, but most people won't need them. If you do, download the appropriate one for your browser from our downloads , and then install it manually. Instructions for installation of nightly Chrome/Firefox extensions available on our wiki . • Click the "Safari" link.
• Extract the downloaded tar.gz file somewhere.
• Open the extracted file and confirm the popup dialog box.

Currently most options are accessed via the command line, but we intend to develop a GUI soon for ease of use. First, download the appropriate executable for your operating system from our downloads .

To use Ruffle, simply double-click the executable and select the SWF file you wish to play. Alternatively, type a command such as ruffle filename.swf or ruffle https://example.com/filename.swf . ActionScript is the language which Flash uses to make interactive content. It is primarily split into two groups: "AVM 1" (ActionScript 1 & 2) and "AVM 2" (ActionScript 3).

AVM 1 is ActionScript 1 and ActionScript 2. All movies made before Flash Player 9 (June 2006) will be made with AVM 1, and it remained supported & available to authors until the release of Flash Professional CC (2013).

We believe that most AVM 1 content will work, but we are aware of some graphical inaccuracies and smaller bugs here and there. Please feel free to report any issues you find that are not present in the original Flash Player!

ActionScript 1 & 2 Language 95%

AVM2 is ActionScript 3, which was introduced with Flash Player 9 (June 2006). After the release of Flash Professional CC (2013), authors are required to use ActionScript 3 - making any movie made after that date very likely to fall under this category.

Ruffle now has support for AVM 2, but enough of the API is still missing that we aren't yet confident enough to claim that most games will work. A warning will be presented to you when you attempt to play AVM 2 content, for this reason. We hope that this will be temporary, as AVM2 support is currently increasing at a very fast pace.

Safari 14 removes Flash, gets support for breach alerts, HTTP/3, and WebP

After the flashy presentations of WWDC 2020, Apple has now published more details about some of the new features that are coming to some of its products.

While Safari didn't get too much of the spotlight at WWDC, Safari 14, scheduled to be released later this fall with iOS 14 and macOS 11, is a release that is packed choke-full with features.

WebExtensions API

The biggest and most important of the new additions is support for WebExtensions, a technology for creating browser extensions.

The WebExtension API was initially developed for Chrome but has since been also adopted to Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, and Edge, and has become the universal standard for creating cross-browser add-ons using common technologies like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

What this means for Safari users is that starting this fall, they'll see a huge influx of new Safari extensions as add-on developers are expected to port their existing Chrome and Firefox extensions to work on Apple's browser as well.

Apple said that, for now, WebExtensions will only be available for Safari on macOS.

No more Flash Player

Safari 14 is also an end of an era, as this will be the first version of Safari that won't support Adobe Flash Player content.

Flash Player is scheduled to reach end-of-life on December 31, 2020 , and will be removed from other major browsers as well.

But while old stuff is being removed, new stuff is also being added. One of the new technologies added to Safari is support for HTTP/3 , a new web standard that will make loading websites faster and safer.

Currently, according to W3Techs, most of today's websites are loaded either via HTTP/1.2 or HTTP/2.0, but HTTP/3 is slowly gaining ground, with HTTP/3 support being already present on 6% of all internet sites .

With adoption rates growing and after HTTP/3 made it into Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and others, Safari was expected to add HTTP/3 support in order to keep in sync with its rivals.

Another important addition in Safari is support for WebP , a lightweight image format that has been gaining widespread adoption across the internet.

The format, created by Google, serves as an alternative to the older JPEG format, and Safari has been the last browser to add support for it .

Breach alerts

But Safari hasn't been lagging behind other browsers just in terms of HTTP/3 and WebP support. Apple has also added support for another cool feature, namely breach alerts, already present in both Chrome and Firefox.

Starting this fall, Apple says that Safari 14 will scan a user's locally-stored passwords and show a prompt if one or more of the user's credentials are present in publicly available lists of breached accounts.

Users will be asked to change their passwords, and the Safari prompt will take users directly to each website's change password page -- if publicly known.

Face ID or Touch ID web authentication

In addition, Apple is also adding support for Face ID and Touch ID authentication inside Safari.

Starting with Safari 14, if a website supports WebAuthn-based authentication, Safari will let users use their fingerprint or face to log into online accounts via their browsers.

Until today, Face ID and Touch ID have been used as a user authentication method for native apps only.

SMS OTP autofill

Another feature added to Safari on iOS is support for the new SMS one-time passcode (OTP) format.

As ZDNet reported earlier this year, the feature originated in the Safari team and has recently gained Google's support .

Once it ships with Safari, OTP codes sent to users' devices via SMS will be automatically filled inside the Safari browser as a security measure against certain phishing attacks that can bypass two-factor authentication.

New Privacy Report button

And last but not least, Apple is also adding a Privacy Report button to Safari's toolbar.

The new button doesn't do much except show statistics about the number of trackers Apple's proprietary Intelligent Tracking Prevention system has blocked on each website the user is visiting.

The Privacy Report button is more of a marketing stunt to make users remember that Safari also blocks tracking scripts. The button was most likely added after both Mozilla and Chrome added content blocking features to their respective browsers; however, to be fair, Apple rolled out Intelligent Tracking Prevention long before its two rivals.

How to get Flash on iPhone & iPad

If you want to play Flash videos and games on your iPhone or iPad, or access Flash-based websites, you’ll come across a bit of a problem: iOS and iPadOS don’t support it. However, there are various apps available on the App Store that will help, and in this article, we explain how to get Flash on iPad and iPhone.

WARNING: Adobe will end support for Adobe Flash on 31 December 2020 do not download it after that date.

Best Flash apps for iPad and iPhone

Popular browser apps that will enable you to play Flash videos and games on your iPad and iPhone include Photon Browser and Puffin.

The most popular third-party browsers such as Chrome, Firefox and Opera no longer support Flash on iOS and iPadOS devices, due to the decreasing popularity of the format.

Photon Browser

Photon Browser seems to be the most popular choice for iPad and iPhone users that require Flash support. It costs £4.99/$4.99 app for iPad and £3.99/$3.99 for iPhone , and acts as a good alternative browser to Safari, with a Flash mode that you turn on by tapping the lightning bolt icon in the top-right corner.

Admittedly, turning on Flash does make the browser a little slow, and it’s not the most attractive interface, but it certainly does the trick. We were able to create a Moshi Monster with no trouble at all on our iPad and iPhone using Photon Browser.

Here’s what happens when using Photon Flash Player vs Safari (swipe across to see more or less of the Photon version):

If you’re finding Photon unbearably slow, try tapping the settings icon in the top-right corner and adjusting the settings to suit your purpose.

Puffin is another popular browser for Flash content which costs £4.99/$4.99 on both iPhone and iPad.

Puffin displayed the Moshi Monsters website brilliantly (below), but struggled a little when displaying the Flash version of the Disney Fantasyland site.

However, Puffin does have a flaw for non-US users. Its servers are located in the US, which means there is a geo-restriction on content being viewed. For example, despite being in the UK, we couldn’t view BBC iPlayer.

Other ways to get Flash on iPad and iPhone

Services such as Parallels Access also offer a way to access Flash on iPad and iPhone, by streaming directly from your Mac or PC. Parallels Access lets you access your Mac or PC desktop on your iPad from anywhere in the world, enabling you to use apps including Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Flash Player and Flash-supported browsers.

If getting Flash on iPad and iPhone is the only thing you’d be downloading Parallels for, it’s probably not the ideal solution, as a year’s subscription will cost you £13.99/$19.99. However, if you’re also looking for a way to access your PC or Mac remotely, or run Mac or PC applications on an iPad or iPhone, it’s certainly worth investigating.

Why don’t the iPad and iPhone support Flash?

Apple’s late co-founder Steve Jobs famously bashed Flash for mobile, and refused to allow the technology on the iOS platform. Instead, Jobs fought for the alternative HTML5 standard, which has since all but replaced Flash around the web.

In August 2012, Adobe disabled new installs of Flash via the Google Play Store, marking the end of Adobe Flash on Android devices too.

Will Adobe Flash Player be used in the future?

With the removal and limited ability to view Flash content on iOS and iPadOS devices, the industry has shifted its interest from Flash and moved to other web codecs, and the end of Flash is near.

As confirmed by Adobe , the company will end support for the Flash format at the end of 2020, and is urging content creators to migrate any existing Flash content to newer formats. While many browsers already block Flash by default (Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Safari), there are still a number of browser-based games that use the technology and will need to convert.
