New York City Bar Association

Unlike some of its neighbors, shortly after a group of lawyers and law students founded the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, they moved into this address... and stayed. That was in 1896. Today, the organization's name has been slightly altered, but its mission remains somewhat the same. Members "actively engage in social issues, " and have continuously fought for human rights both here and abroad, offering pro bono legal services when necessary. Designed in 1894 by architect Cyrus L. W. Eidlitz, this home of the New York City Bar Association is a true architectural gem. The design is neoclassical, the material is limestone. As per usual for this block, the building is a NYC Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. Really, words and photographs do not do the building justice.

Church of Sweden 1 Churches Community Centers undefined

Church of Sweden

Initially serving as a resting stop for Scandinavian sailors when they disembarked in lower Manhattan, the Swedish Seaman's Church opened its doors on Water Street in 1873. The neo-Gothic building in which the Church currently resides was constructed in 1921 for "The Bible House" before being sold to the Church of Sweden in 1978. The Church's nautical past is evidenced in the model boats placed among the large collection of Swedish books. With a chapel, a library, and a coffee shop, the Church's doors are always open to Swedes. While tasting their delicious Swedish buns, I chatted with the staff who spoke enthusiastically about the function that the center plays in people's lives. For families, it provides a "wind" of Sweden whenever they miss their homeland. There are also multiple weddings conducted in the chapel each week, and people come from all over to celebrate holidays and shop at their Christmas Bazaar.

Clinton Community Garden 1 Gardens undefined

Clinton Community Garden

Clinton Garden is a striking testament to the power of residential communities in New York. One of the earliest examples of urban agricultural reclamation, the garden was created in 1979 in a lot that had been abandoned for twenty-eight years. Seeing potential in the space and hoping to improve the area around the neighborhood, residents (with the help of Operation Green Thumb, which leased the lot from the city) transformed the VACANT property into a garden using reclaimed and salvaged bricks, concrete, and slate. Finding the gates open on a beautiful spring Saturday, I wandered in and strolled down the paths filled with magnificent flowers and shrubs. I also met committed people tending to their small plots of land, of which there are now over one hundred. I have since been back many times, as I think this is a magnificent retreat on those days that I am in a need of a place to rest while walking the side streets of Manhattan.

Tucked between a Swiss and an Italian restaurant, Scent Elate brings Eastern spirituality to the neighborhood. With the doors swung open, the aromas were an enticing trail that led me into this tiny boutique packed with an array of incense, candles, soaps, oils and lotions. Scent Elate also has books on meditation and yoga scattered among crystals, jewelry, chimes and hanging ornaments. In fact, it might just be "the" place to go when searching for sticks of incense - not only is there a vast selection, but Mo, the owner, makes a special effort to find the perfect scent to enhance each individual customer's environment.

Wolf & Lamb Steakhouse 1 Steakhouses Kosher American undefined

Wolf & Lamb Steakhouse

Named after Bible verses in Isaiah (the wolf and the lamb shall feed together), this restaurant opened in Manhattan in 1998, and expanded to Brooklyn the following year. Initially a traditional kosher deli, it later reinvented itself as a steakhouse. The extensive menu ranges from matzo ball soup to salmon burgers, veal Bolognese gnocchi and, of course, includes a variety of steaks and chops. Drawing on influences as diverse as Vietnamese, Tex-Mex, and French-country, Wolf and Lamb adapts its more customary function to a cosmopolitan venue. "Just because you're keeping kosher doesn't mean you have to sacrifice on quality, " shared a waitress. And while we were told that the majority of customers keep kosher regularly, the crowded space was testament to Wolf and Lamb's broad culinary appeal.

As Disney acquires Fox and prepares to lease the studio lot for seven years, here’s a look back at the history of the storied lot. Fox moved to its present location, formerly Tom Mix’s ranch, in 1926 and began to construct the massive soundstages that are still in constant use. Stage 6 was built in 1930; among the films that have shot there are “Gentleman’s Agreement” (1947), “The King and I,” (1956) “The Poseidon Adventure,” (1972) and Nine to Five (1980).

What studios do fox’s cable channel shows use.

fox studio tours nyc

Fox’s conservative commentary channel has primary operations inside the News Corp. building at 1211 Avenue of the Americas in New York City.

Fox labels its studios in New York with a single letter. Originally the letters followed a quasi-predictable pattern based on location in the building, but over the years some have been renamed, removed or moved. Fox also has taken over portions of the building, including former retail space, that was not originally part of its space in the early days of the network or when the building was mostly office space for News Corp.

  • Studio M : Originally known as Studio F , the studio was renamed in October 2021 to honor the Murdoch family, the founder of the parent company of Fox. Studio F is widely considered the flagship studio for the network and occupies space that was formerly home to a Charles Schwab branch and a FedEx Kinkos store, and still sports large, double-height windows between structural columns. Studio M has two levels — a “main” one and a mezzanine. The space outside of Studio M, is dubbed “Fox Square” and used for outdoor segments and specials. Studio M is home to “Fox & Friends,” “Jesse Watters Primetime,” “The Five,” “The Faulkner Focus” and “The Story,” among other programs. Shots from Studio M appear frequently on other shows originating from other studios or even locations with video on video and walk and wander floating camera shots.
  • Studio J : This space was added as part of a renovation to the building’s second floor that included removing many of the executive suites used by the late Roger Ailes. The same project added a new newsroom for the network, bringing it up from the basement. Studio J, which as been jokingly referred to as standing for “jazzy,” features a multivenue set with an overhead balcony. It is home to “Hannity,” “America’s Newsroom,” and “America Reports.”
  • Studio W : Formerly known as Studio H , this space was home the “Fox News Deck,” a studio primarily used by “Shepard Smith Reports.” After Smith left the network, the space was updated as the home to Fox Weather, with the studio name changing so that “W” could stand for “weather.”
  • Studio N : Studio N has been in two locations in the building — in the basement level when that was where the network’s primary newsroom was, but now is adjacent to the new newsroom on the second floor. It is a small, glassed-in studio with a view of the actual newsroom. Video loops based on the appearance of the newsroom appear behind other Fox broadcasts, notably “America’s Newsroom,” despite the studio not being directly adjacent to the newsroom. “N” is said to stand for “newsroom.”
  • Studio G : Located directly above Studio M, this space was originally designed for Fox Business and even included a faux bank vault. I was completely overhauled in 2019 and still appears on Fox Business and the commentary channel, including shows such as “Coast to Coast,” “Your World,” “Mornings with Maria” and “
  • Studio E: Located on the opposite side of the building than Studio M, but on the ground level, this space has been used for Fox Sports programming and his currently home to late-night show “ Gutfeld .”

Fox Studios: Chronology

Fox Film Corporation formed by the theater chain pioneer William G Fox, as a merger of his two companies Greater New York Film Rental and Fox Office Attractions Company . The first studios were in Fort Lee, New Jersey. De Luxe formed the film and camera department for the studio.

The novelist Rev. Thomas Dixon moved to Los Angeles to setup Dixon Studios, Laboratory and Press on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Western Avenue, after being inspired by D.W.Griffith’s Birth of a Nation .

Fox leases the 0.75-acre, former Selig/Polyscope studio in the Edendale area, but quickly outgrows it and moves to a new purpose-built studio a year later..

Fox sent a representative to from New York to Hollywood to oversee the expansion of production facilities at the former Dixon Studios site, which was situated in East Hollywood at Sunset & Western. This was the base for Fox between 1917 and 1924. The Deluxe lab (which was based on the site from 1917 until it closed in May 2014) takes up a large proportion of the still-existing studio buildings. Also on the site is a Food4Less supermarket. More information about the Sunset & Western studio. News Article about closure of Deluxe lab

Fox bought the rights to the Movietone sound system, which became Fox Movietone.

Fox bought the private ranch of it’s silent Western star Tom Mix, including 176 acres of rolling countryside, a bungalow and a stable, between two roads which became Santa Monica and Pico. Here he started construction of a new studio he called ‘Movietone City’. (The bungalow is still preserved on the Fox lot, near the satellite facility). Many of the stages still have Fox Movietone logos above their entrance doors.

The Jazz Singer (1927) revolutionised the industry, and William Fox sped up construction of state-of-the-art soundstages.

Fox’s offer to buy Loew’s Inc. was accepted, but after the stock market crash in the fall of 1929, the merger was stopped, and Fox was left close to bankruptcy and ended up in jail. Fox Film, with more than 500 theatres, was placed in receivership.

Twentieth Century Pictures created by Joseph Schenck (former president of United Artists), Darryl F. Zanuck from Warner Brothers, William Goetz from Fox Films and Raymond Griffith.

1935 (May 31)

After a bank-mandated reorganisation, under new president Sidney Kent, the new owners merged Fox Film with Twentieth Century Pictures to form The Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation. Joe Schenck and Darryl F. Zanuck retained their roles as chief executive and head of production, respectively.

A court ruling meant the theaters Fox ran had to be split off into a new company Fox National Theaters. Fox bought the rights to a new projection system called CinemaScope in February 1953 and Zanuck announced that all Fox pictures would be made in this process. Fox agreed to pay conversion costs for each theater (of around $25,000 per screen). A new CinemaScope anamorphic lens was added to the front of the projector and wider format screens had to be installed. Fox gave access to the format to other studios to help convince theater owners. CinemaScope showed a brief increase in audience numbers, but the numbers began to slide after a few years.

Darryl F.Zanuck announced his resignation as head of production.

Plans are drawn up for the development of the Fox backlot into Century City.

Fox sold 263 acres of backlot (now the site of Century City) to Alcoa to raise funds during the production of troubled epic Cleopatra. The backlot is systematically destroyed to clear the ground.

Darryl F.Zanuck is appointed chairman, and his son Richard Zanuck takes on the role of president. The new management group rushed Cleopatra to completion, and shut down the studio, laying off the staff, to save money. The Movietone Newsreel also ceased production. A series of cheap, popular movies were made which re-established Fox as a major player.

The Century Plaza Hotel was the first major construction at Century City. Avenue of the Stars was the first street constructed.

Twentieth Century-Fox was rescued by The Sound of Music (1965) which boosted the studios fortunes and became one of the all-time greatest box office hits.

Zanuck leaves as chairman. Fox had a few bad years between 1969 and 1971 resulting in some losses.

New president Dennis Stanfill and production head Alan Ladd Jr. get Fox back on track. Profits are invested in resorts, soft-drink bottlers and Australian theaters.

Fox produces Star Wars and has an unprecendented success on it’s hands.

Control of the company passed to investors Marc Rich and Marvin Davis.

In early 1985 half of the company was sold to News Corp. after Marc Rich left the country. Six months later, the remaining half was sold, giving Rupert Murdoch’s company complete control. Barry Diller was hired from Paramount to run the studio. Murdoch became an American citizen, and Twentieth Century Fox dropped the hyphen from its name.

Fox Broadcasting Company began broadcasting.

1987 February

Fox Plaza is completed, following the site’s use as the setting for Die Hard (1988). As well as housing the offices of 20th Century Fox executives, Ronald Reagan’s post-presidential offices took over the lavish top floor (1987-1999).

The British Rank company buys Deluxe labs in Hollywood. The Rank lab in London is renamed Deluxe.

Fox became the international distributor for MGM/UA releases.

Fox became the worldwide video distributor for the MGM/UA library.

Fox News Channel dedicated its premier New York City studio to network founder Rupert Murdoch on Wednesday with an intimate, surprise celebration as the network continues to commemorate its 25th anniversary.

Murdoch, a global media mogul who is Fox Corporation chairman and News Corp executive chairman, launched Fox News in 1996.

"As part of our 25th anniversary celebration this month, it is my great pleasure to announce the dedication of FOX News Channel’s premier studio to our founder Keith Rupert Murdoch. Our grand state-of-the-art Studio F in New York will be known from this day forward as Studio M in his honor," FOX News Media CEO Suzanne Scott said in a company-wide memo.

"A plaque designating the new name was unveiled in a small surprise ceremony this afternoon with Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch to celebrate Rupert’s extraordinary vision," Scott added. "We are all eternally grateful for his tremendous leadership, unyielding support and indelible impact."

Murdoch's ascent began in Australia in the early 1950s when he took control of the family's Australian company, News Limited, in the early 1950s. The Murdoch media empire soon expanded worldwide. He acquired Perth's Sunday Times and Sydney's Daily Mirror and by the 1960s purchased United Kingdom-based News of the World and the Sun newspapers.

He expanded to the United States in the early 1970s, adding a plethora of newspapers – including the New York Post – to his portfolio.

Murdoch eventually founded the media holding company, News Corporation, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1985. But, he wasn’t finished building his empire and purchased the Twentieth Century Fox movie studio, launched the Fox Network and later created Fox News Channel and the Fox Business Network.

Fox News, which debuted on October 7, 1996, began as a vision by Murdoch that was quickly dismissed by critics. At the time, FOX had seen phenomenal growth in entertainment programming, children’s content and in sports offerings, but the company lacked a relevant news organization.

Launching Fox News from scratch was costly and risky, but Murdoch expected success.

"I think you will find as more news channels, and particularly our news channel, appear the audience will increase greatly," Murdoch told reporters months before Fox News officially launched.

A quarter of a century later, anyone who doubted Murdoch’s confidence has been proven wrong.

Fox News recently finished the third quarter of 2021 as the  most-watched network  in all of basic cable among both total day and primetime viewers. It has now topped cable news for 79 straight quarters and finished No. 1 in basic cable for seven straight quarters as Americans turn to Murdoch’s network for news and analysis.

"His legacy in revolutionizing the entire media landscape and creating the FOX News Channel will continue to have enduring significance for all who work, visit and broadcast from Studio M," Scott said to conclude the memo.

Fox News Channel produced a series of short-form vignettes from network favorites, celebrities and regular guests to commemorate its 25th anniversary. The short video messages have aired on Fox News Media platforms for the month of October as more than 50 Fox News personalities and founding employees reflect on their time with the network.

"I remember reading about the launch of this channel in the trades and thinking to myself, ‘I got to find a way to get in here,'" Kilmeade, who joined the network in 1997, said in his vignette.

A quarter-century later, Kilmeade will now co-anchor "FOX & Friends" from the studio dedicated to Murdoch.

On a Hollywood studio lot, a new New York comes to life

A security guard patrols the new New York Street set at Fox Studios

Last summer, when the Hollywood writers’ strike had shut down film and television production, a crew of scenic painters at the legendary Fox Studio Lot took advantage of the lull to mess up New York City.

Work had recently been completed on a new set of façades meant to mimic Manhattan streets, but the result was too pretty and clean. Even the smooth gray concrete curbs looked suspiciously fresh.

“After the curbs were perfectly poured, we had a gentleman with a jackhammer come in here and chip away at them,” said Gary Ehrlich, president of studio operations. “It was slightly heartbreaking to see.”

Today, the curbs are suitably beaten up, with dings and black smears as if tires had been rubbing against them for decades. Fire escapes look corroded and other metal fixtures such as banisters have been coated to look old or rusty, while walls appear water-stained. A patina of age has settled over this faux city.

A film crew unloads a truck as they get ready for a shoot at the new New York set at Fox Studios in Los Angeles.

The painstaking besmirchment of New York Street was one more twist in the long saga of one of filmdom’s most famous outdoor sets. Looming near the front gate like an adult-sized playhouse, an earlier version of the set and now the new one have long served notice to visitors that they have arrived at a movie studio that is itself a leading character in Hollywood lore.

Its lineage is suitably rich in Hollywood flavor: In 1967 Fox was preparing to shoot the film version of “Hello, Dolly!,” a Tony-award winning musical set in 1890s New York City that ran for years on Broadway. The script included a spectacular outdoor parade with thousands of extras, and studio executives determined that it would be impossible to shoot on location in New York because the city had changed too much.

Fox production designer John DeCuir, who had already won Academy Awards for his design of “The King and I” and “Cleopatra,” came up with a streetscape that required more than 500 workers to labor for four months to build. The $2.25-million price tag made it the most costly movie set built to date, the UPI news service reported at the time.

Fox oral history: Inside the legendary studio at the end of its run

It required more than 300,000 feet of board lumber and 22 miles of telephone wire strung between poles, the way it was in old New York. A painted 11-story office building façade obscured the view of the Century Plaza Hotel looming next to the lot, according to Barbra Archives, which chronicles the career of “Hello, Dolly!” star Barbra Streisand.

In a black-and-white film still, Barbra Streisand marches with a band in the movie "Hello, Dolly!"

Dominating the street was a replica of an elevated train station and a steam locomotive acquired from a sugar plantation in Hawaii, where it had been used to transport workers.

On July 16, 1968, the Valley Times reported, “The parade stretching one-fifth of a mile and comprised of 675 persons in 16 units passed through a crowd of 3,108 film extras” in period costumes. Among the performers were the UCLA marching band and the Budweiser Clydesdales. The director was actor-dancer Gene Kelly.

As impressive as the set was, it was intended to be temporary, said Michael Whetstone, a production designer who worked on building the new version of New York Street.

“It was supposed to be torn down but wasn’t because it was too expensive” to remove, he said. At the time the studio was reeling from financial setbacks including a $30-million loss on “Hello, Dolly!,” according to the New York Times.

Two men on a scissor lift work on the façade of a brownstone building on Fox's New York set.

The set enjoyed a second, money-making act in the years that followed as Fox rented it out for use on pictures that included Warner Bros.’ comedy “Up the Sandbox,” starring Streisand, and MGM’s musical “New York, New York,” starring Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro. Among the television shows that used it were “Charlie’s Angels” and “Moonlighting,” while Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga and other musicians used it for music videos.

But a few years ago, with the set showing its age, the studio started considering its replacement, Ehrlich said. “It had been exposed to the elements for five decades and was past its useful life.”

Fox tapped Culver City architect Nathan Moore of House & Robertson Architects to design something sturdier.

Construction required 49 tons of rebar and more than 1,000 cubic feet of concrete. The set is held up by 260 tons of structural steel and backed inside with 4,400 square feet of catwalks. Lighting and other electrical functions are supported with 21,000 square feet of conduit and wire, allowing productions to hook up to house power instead of rolling in generators. The set also had to comply with building codes and be tracked by city building inspectors.

The new New York Street was made to look like the city in the mid 20th century, a decision that required detailed craftsmanship such as window heads and sills that would have been carved out of wood in years past but were instead fabricated out of plastic foam and finished with plaster. Windows were installed to be easily replaced so productions can break them when scenes call for it.

Whetstone oversaw the project and, as part of his research, made several trips to New York, spending long hours on foot trying to get a sense of how light plays on buildings at night.

“I was literally walking Lower Manhattan from 10 p.m. to 4 in the morning taking pictures,” he said.

Almost everyone in Hollywood wants to get back to work. What’s taking so long?

Studios and workers alike were eager to restart film and TV production after the Hollywood strikes concluded. What’s taking so long in California?

March 21, 2024

Where the original “Hello, Dolly!” set was based on a commercial section of 1890s New York suitable for a parade, Fox elected to make the new set feel like a neighborhood from a later era.

“It’s more Lower Manhattan, more Bowery,” Whetstone said. “Definitely the Lower East Side.”

A person leans against the wall of a building made to look like part of a New York City street.

While the set is “a default vision of New York City,” said Whetstone, it also is intended to stand in for any major city. Through the years, Fox’s New York Street has subbed for Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Pasadena.

Even though improving camera technology through the years has made it easier to shoot on location, there are reasons filmmakers keep shooting on studio lots, said Jason E. Squire, entertainment podcaster and professor emeritus at USC School of Cinematic Arts.

As filming equipment and cameras got lighter and more portable, the more free-flowing New Wave cinema that emerged in the late 1950s and ’60s employed provocative camerawork.

“This liberation led to people shooting off the studio lot,” Squire said. “Filmmakers wanted to get away from the studio.”

But it has remained expensive to shoot a large-scale production in the real world with all the vehicles, equipment and personnel required to be transported and managed on-site.

“One of the key decisions early in any production is whether to build sets on a lot or shoot in a real location,” Squire said. “That depends on how intricate the sequences are going to be, how intimate. It’s a judgment call and a money call, and the money usually wins.”

Shooting behind studio gates also prevents uncomfortable collisions between fantasy and reality.

“On the lot you don’t have interference from civilians,” Squire said. “You can control traffic, you can control lighting. All of the equipment is at your beck and call.”

Whetstone recalled having to flee location shooting in downtown L.A.’s Arts District when working on Season 1 of “New Girl,” a Fox television comedy starring Zooey Deschanel that premiered in 2011.

“We started out shooting in downtown Los Angeles, and by the end of our fifth night shoot we had angered so many of the neighbors around in the community that we ended up building downtown L.A. on the Fox lot,” Whetstone said.

The makeover of New York Street is in addition to a planned $1.5-billion upgrade of the Fox Studio Lot announced last year by Fox Corp. that is to include more soundstages and offices. Fox Corp. retained ownership of the lot when Walt Disney Co. bought most of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets in 2019.

The upgrades come as the real New York mounts an aggressive effort to lure TV and movie producers from L.A. by building new studios and soundstages.

On New York Street in Los Angeles, Fox also was able to transform the set behind the façades, adding 4,000 square feet of interior space that makes it easier to meld outdoor and indoor action. The studio declined to reveal exactly how much the new multimillion-dollar set cost, but Fox wants it to stand for another half-century at least.

“This project was approached not just as temp architecture but as something more permanent,” Whetstone said. “We want this to last a long time.”
