About JK Forest Department

The Forest Department of J&K is more than 125 years old.  Initially Forests were managed for sustainable harvest of timber for different construction and industrial purposes.  Later on since 1970’s the objective of Forest Department shifted to Conservation. The Forest Department since its beginning constructed Forest Rest Houses/Inspection Huts generally in remote and interior places of Forests for management purposes.  These places were strategic, most scenic, overlooking vast mountainous stretches and flowing streams.  In order to include people also in its conservation efforts, the Government of J&K has decided to open these Forest Rest Houses / Inspection Huts for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts and people interested in conservation of these natural resources. It comprises of several meadows enveloped by thick forest of Deodar and Kail trees and affords peaceful walks amidst pine groves, beautiful spots for enjoyable picnics and breathtaking views of the Chenab basin and th Pir Panjal range beyond. For solace one can visit th beautifully located Nag Mandir. Other activities include horse rides and short treak into the surrounding hills. One can also drive through thick forest 12 Kms downhill to Batote, an old hill station also known for apple orchards, Amar Cheshma and other springs. From here one can also visit the Dam site of the Bagliar Hydro – Electric Project 10 Kms away, with the permission of the project authorities. In winters (January – February), the snow covered slopes of Patnitop provide opportunities for varius snow games including amateur skiing and sledging. Visitor facilities at Patnitop include good quality accommodation in hotels guesthouses, the JKTDC’s tourist bunglows, and recreational facilities in the Patnitop Club. Accommodation for youth and students is available in the Youth Hostel. The JKTDC’s luxury huts self contained timber cottages tucked away amidst pine trees provide an idyllic ambience for a quiet and memorable stay surrounded by sights and sounds of nature.

The most exciting feature of the beautiful resort of Sanasar (2079 meters), 19 Kms west of Patnitop, is a sprawling cup shaped meadow, 1 surrounded by gigantic conifers, which has been developed into a 9 – hole golf course. Besides enjoying exciting pony rides amongst the groves and other smaller meadow, one can also take treks up the surrounding hills from here. Sanasar is also ideal for paragliding, while Natha Top on way to Sanasar affords scenic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. For those desirous of experiencing a quiet stay surrounded by the tranquility of nature, there are several self contained huts and a Tourist Bungalow managed by JKTDC at Sanasar.

Advisory issued for tourists, pilgrims, truck movement in J&K

According to the advisory issued by the IGP Traffic Police, Jammu and Kashmir, empty tankers and trucks upto 10 tyres shall ply through Mughal Road towards Jammu. The trucks up to 10 tyres including those loaded with fresh perishable items shall preferentially use Mughal Road towards Jammu. The timings of Mughal Road have also been increased from 7 am to 4 pm, for the present, subject to the daily assessment by traffic authorities.

J&K govt notifies guidelines for homestay, paying guest house registration

SRINAGAR, JULY 06: In order to facilitate more and more people to join the tourism trade, the Government has notified procedural guidelines for registration of Homestay and Paying Guest Houses in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.

Orders to this effect were issued by Secretary, Tourism, Sarmad Hafeez here.

The aim of notifying these guidelines is to create a hassle free environment for those wishing to register their properties as Homestays/Paying Guest Houses by simplifying many of the procedural requirements and minimising the formalities.

An added benefit of introducing the concept of Homestays is to promote local culture, cuisine, handicrafts etc. thereby enhancing the employment opportunities for local inhabitants. Homestays/Paying Guest Houses would also be encouraged at the 75 new tourist destinations recently put on the tourist map by the Department. This is expected to increase the tourist footfall by considerable measure.

It may be recalled that the Department of Tourism in recent times has taken several path breaking steps to upgrade tourism services, extend the touring seasons, adding more destinations to the tourist map, making J&K round the year destination, golf promotion, a rigorous promotional campaign, thrust on adventure and heritage tourism, to name a few.

As a sequel of these efforts, J&K has witnessed a huge tourist footfall over the past one and a half years and many experts say the tourist footfall of the past six months has been the highest in the last 15 years.
