10 Best Rhine River Cruises

Sail past stunning castles, quaint towns, and vineyards on these Rhine River cruises.

rhine cruises for families

River cruising has grown in popularity in recent years, with new lines offering unique ways to experience Europe’s most iconic rivers, including the Danube, Douro, Seine, and, of course, the Rhine. “The Rhine River is famous for castles, cathedrals, historic sites, and medieval towns, offering majestic scenery as you travel through several European countries. You feel as if you’ve traveled back to a different time in our world,” Travel + Leisure A-list advisor Olga Placeres says.

On most Rhine River cruises, guests can explore on their terms, making this a great trip idea for multi-generational travel. From family-friendly trips to beer-focused itineraries to festive holiday cruises, here are 10 of the best Rhine River cruises for every type of traveler.

AmaWaterways

7-night Enchanting Rhine Cruise

Cruise expert Placeres named AmaWaterways one of her favorite river cruise lines. This family-owned and operated line offers all-inclusive river cruises with a range of shore excursions for both active and relaxed travelers. Several Rhine River cruises are available, and a few include the Moselle and Main Rivers. Christmas market cruises and wine-focused itineraries are also offered.

The Enchanting Rhine cruise begins in Basel, Switzerland, where passengers board their vessel (while the specific ship varies depending on the dates, all carry fewer than 170 guests). In Breisach, Germany, guests can choose a wine country bike tour, walking tour, or hike in the Black Forest. The cruise continues to Strasbourg, Heidelberg, and Rüdesheim, with options each day for active or relaxed excursions. The scenic Rhine River Gorge area is a highlight, and there are visits to Cologne and Düsseldorf before arriving in Amsterdam.

Viking River Cruises

11-day Rhine and Main Explorer Cruise

Placeres also recommends Viking Cruises, which was established by Torstein Hagen in 1997 and operates river, ocean, and expedition cruises across all seven continents. Viking’s Rhine River cruises range from eight to 15 days, and itineraries go beyond the Rhine to include the Main, Moselle, and a voyage that goes across the North Sea to Norway’s fjords.

The Rhine and Main Explorer begins in Nuremberg and continues to Bamberg for a walking tour through the winding streets of the medieval city. Cruise highlights include palace tours in Würzburg, local Bavarian culture and food in Marktheidenfeld, scenic sailing on the Main River, touring the charming French city of Strasbourg, and admiring Germany's famous Black Forest. The tour ends with two nights in Basel, where you can take a tour of the city and enjoy cheese fondue.

Adventures by Disney

8-day rhine river cruise.

Adventures by Disney river cruises are designed for families, but they also offer adults-only (18+) experiences on Europe’s rivers. Instead of setting sail on a Disney Cruise Line mega ship, these itineraries use AmaWaterways river ships for a more intimate experience with a maximum of 156 guests. Travel writer Terry Ward took her six and seven year olds and her 18-year-old niece on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise in July. “I can confirm it’s a trip with total multigenerational appeal,” Ward says. “There were always multiple options for shore excursions — something to interest passengers across the board.”

“During a port of call in Germany’s Black Forest region, for example, we could choose a toboggan run through the forest with time spent carving wooden toys and learning to make butter, visiting Europa Park, or enjoying the medieval old town of Riquewihr.” Ward tells T+L, “On several nights, Disney’s Adventure Guides whisked the kids off to the lounge for their own fun — maybe a Disney movie and dinner or games — so the adults could try the chef’s tasting table or enjoy a quieter dinner. Teens had their own tables for dinner if they wished.” Ward added, “The Adventure Guides hailed from some of the countries we sailed through, so traveling with them in Europe felt a bit like being along for the ride with an in-the-know friend.”

Avalon Waterways

8-day Tulip Time for Beer Enthusiasts Cruise

After nearly a century in European tourism, the Globus family of brands launched Avalon Waterways in 2004, and it was ranked among the top river cruise lines in the world by T+L readers in 2024. Avalon’s Rhine River cruises range from five days to 11 days; several include the Moselle, and they offer seasonal Christmas market cruises.

The Tulip Time for Beer Enthusiasts cruise is a round-trip cruise from Amsterdam offered in the spring, with a beer expert on board to host lectures, beer tastings, and food and beer pairings. The ship heads to Rotterdam for a walking tour, bike ride, or a guided excursion to Keukenhof, known as the “Garden of Europe” with over seven million tulips. In Antwerp and Ghent, guests can choose between bike or walking tours, while guided tours in Willemstad take guests among centuries-old buildings. In Amsterdam, guests can take a guided canal cruise followed by a Dutch beer experience.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

8-day Rhine River Valley Cruise

Founded in 1976, Uniworld is a luxurious, all-inclusive cruise line that offers itineraries on Europe's famous rivers. Uniworld's Rhine River cruises start at eight days, but travelers with more time can combine the Danube, Main, and Rhine Rivers on a 25-day, eight-country cruise.

The eight-day Rhine River Valley cruise boards in Nuremberg and cruises to Bamberg where guests can choose a walking tour, nature park hike, or brewery tour. In Würzburg, an 18th-century palace tour or wine tasting are options; additional stops include Miltenberg, Mainz, Baden-Baden, Strasbourg, and Breisach, before disembarking in Basel.

8-day Castles on the Rhine: Family Riverboat Adventure Cruise

This century-old, family-owned company offers travel experiences in more than 100 destinations, ranging from small-group tours to river cruises. Tauck’s Rhine River cruise itineraries range from eight days to the 15-day Grand European Cruise that covers nine countries along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers.

The eight-day Castles on the Rhine: Family Riverboat Adventure is a Tauck Bridges family cruise designed for guests of all ages. The cruise departs from Basel, and the next day, guests travel by rail to Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne to ride the world’s steepest cog-wheel train. In Strasbourg, there’s a French sing along and chocolate tasting. The family-focused fun continues at stops in Heidelberg, Rüdesheim, and Cologne before the ship reaches its final stop. In Amsterdam, guests can take a canal cruise, visit a windmill, or taste local cheeses.

8-day Rhine Christmas Markets Cruise

This Australian-founded company established in 1986 offers river cruises, ocean voyages, and expeditions to the polar regions. Billed as an ultra-luxury, five-star cruise line, Scenic offers special Rhine River itineraries that feature Christmas markets or focus on topics like wine and food.

The Rhine Christmas Markets cruise begins in Amsterdam with options of a walking, biking, or canal tour before setting off for Cologne, where guests can see the magnificent 13th-century Gothic cathedral, visit a brewery, and browse the Christmas markets. In Baden-Baden, a famed German spa town, browse the markets or soak in thermal waters. Koblenz, Mannheim, and Strasbourg are additional stops on this holiday-themed itinerary.

Emerald Cruises

8-day Jewels of the Rhine Cruise

Emerald, founded in 2013, specializes in luxury river and yacht cruises. Emerald's Rhine River cruises include an eight-day voyage and an 11-day cruise that includes the Moselle.

The Jewels of the Rhine cruise starts with two nights in Amsterdam, where guests can take a bicycle tour or canal cruise before the captain’s dinner. Then, it's off to Cologne and the charming cities of Koblenz, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Freiburg, where castles, historic churches, and half-timbered buildings await. The ship arrives in Basel for the end of the cruise the next day.

CroisiEurope

5-day Rhine in Flames Cruise

Founded in 1976 in France, CroisiEurope is the largest European-based river cruise line. The company also offers sea voyages and canal barge cruises. Their budget-friendly river cruises include some shore excursions, and Rhine River cruises vary in length from three days to two weeks or longer.

The five-day Rhine in Flames cruise boards in Strasbourg for a night of cruising. The next day in Rüdesheim, excursion options include a train ride to a wine cellar followed by a visit to the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments or a gondola lift to the Niederwalddenkmal and vineyard hike. The next day is the main event as the ship sails towards Trechtingshausen for the famous Rhine in Flames fireworks show. The ship arrives in Mannheim for an optional visit to Heidelberg and later a gala evening before sailing back towards Strasbourg.

A-Rosa Cruises

6-day Rhine Legends Cruise

This German company has been cruising the Rhine River and its tributaries since 2009. The family-friendly line has a kids club and family suites with plenty of room to spread out. Their river cruises range from four to seven days, and there is a fee for most excursions.

The five-day Rhine Legends cruises the Middle Rhine round-trip from Cologne. In Rüdesheim, guests can tour the countryside on a bike or train tour. Stops in Speyer, Strasbourg, Mainz, and Koblenz provide more ways to explore the beautiful region, before the ship returns to Cologne for disembarkation.

I Shared a Cabin With My 6-Year-Old Granddaughter on a European River Cruise—Here’s How It Went

Will everyone get along and have fun on a multigenerational river cruise along the rhine one writer boarded an adventures by disney ship with her daughter’s family to find out..

  • Copy Link copied

A few yellow and red canoes, each with two people inside, along a river, with low bridge and Gothic cathedral in background

All three generations thoroughly enjoyed a canoeing excursion offered by Adventures by Disney on its Rhine sailings.

As a parent, you try to raise kids who are both happy and curious. As a grandparent, I hope for the same thing for my grandchildren, thus arriving at the recent decision to start showing my six-year-old granddaughter, Millie, more of the world. A European river cruise through the fairy-tale landscapes of the Rhine River this past summer, offered by Adventures by Disney , proved the perfect opportunity. Her 40-year-old parents (my daughter and son-in-law) joined us as well.

On the seven-night cruise from Basel to Amsterdam , we traveled through four countries—Switzerland, France, Germany, and the Netherlands—as we bonded during encounters that took us out of our routine and expanded our imaginations.

While Adventures by Disney river cruises do not feature Disney character appearances and themed attractions, as on Disney Cruise Line ocean ships, it helps to have some affinity for Disney if you opt for these more intimate river cruise sailings. There were ample Disney references during our Rhine cruise, along with a soundtrack of Disney movie songs playing on the ship’s sound system, among other tie-ins. Fellow passengers were fans who were excited, for instance, to collect daily Disney trading pins (in our case including pins featuring such princess characters as Snow White and Rapunzel) and to play Disney trivia in the ship’s lounge.

A multigenerational family of four takes a selfie in a pink canoe on the water; all hold paddles and wear hats and sunglasses

An Adventures by Disney canoeing outing in Strasbourg with the entire family was a hit with this crew, including writer Fran Golden, and her granddaughter Millie in the center, with daughter and son-in-law at the front and aft.

The Disney difference I found most intriguing was the calm that came from knowing the trip would be both well organized and extremely family friendly. As we boarded the 156-passenger AmaLucia , chartered by Disney from the upscale river cruise line AmaWaterways , Millie was excited to see Captain Minnie in stuffie form sitting on the reception desk. Millie’s other big elation: A handful of girls her age aboard, who were among the 13 younger kids, 17 teenagers, and plenty of adults traveling with and without kids. The youngsters quickly gravitated to the ship’s outdoor pool as their favorite hangout spot.

Overseeing our whole cruise experience were five well-trained Disney Adventure Guides attuned to storytelling, three hailing from Europe and two from the USA, and all having worked at Disney parks in the past. In an effort to keep kids engaged along the way, they would make references to concepts such as “pixie dust” and a “fairy godmother.”

As we viewed real castles (not of the fairy-tale variety) along the Rhine, we were advised to create our own family story during the cruise. When asked how our story might begin, Millie shouted out “Once upon a time, of course,” eliciting giggles from the crowd.

With our guides as cheerleaders in the memory-making department, our friendly AmaLucia crew, more accustomed to dealing with adult river cruisers, also embraced the fact that kids were aboard. One waiter showed off skill in making paper hats in the dining room while the ship’s hotel manager, a grandfather himself, kept a help-yourself jar of pink marshmallows at his desk.

Two twins beds with brightly flowered duvets and a twin-balcony concept (one walk-out balcony and one French balcony) in a stateroom

The writer embraced some of the unpredictability that comes with sharing a stateroom with a six-year-old.

Courtesy of AmaWaterways

Millie was my shipboard roommate, her parents staying in a stateroom across the hall. We had twin beds and AmaWaterways’ signature twin balconies—one step-out balcony with chairs, the other a French balcony.

Rooming with a six-year-old requires a sense of humor and the ability to improvise. One morning, Millie gave me a 6:30 a.m. wake-up call, peeling open the curtains and declaring “Look at the sunrise! I like to watch sunrises.” One night, when Millie’s excuse for not sleeping was that she was hungry, I had an orange to peel but no serving dish, so Millie ate orange slices out of my wine glass.

The AmaLucia made some minor adjustments for Disney such as the addition of a kids’ menu featuring burgers and pasta. Millie preferred the always-available grilled salmon from the grown-up menu of international dishes. Each evening there were complimentary mocktails alongside cocktails in the lounge, and I taught Millie how to clink glasses.

Our route included passing through a dozen locks, during which our ship entered the lock (a sort of oversize bathtub), and the water was lowered, bringing the ship down to the next level of the river so it could then sail onward. The first lock was during daylight (most occurred at night). Unbeknownst to me, Millie had, with her new friends, made her way onto the bridge and was watching with the ship’s affable captain. It was reassuring to see that my granddaughter had made herself at home on the ship.

Along the way, we had an impressive choice of excursions that were included in the cruise fare. I let my daughter, Erin, and her husband, Spencer, choose prior to the cruise what we would do. They also added some alone time to the agenda while I entertained Millie, which I was thrilled to do.

At each port, passengers went in different directions based on their interests, including heading off on their own if they didn’t want to take one of the optional tours with local guides. More than just chaperoning tours, the Adventure Guides also offered advice on how to spend free time in the ports, even down to what local snacks in each town kids and adults might best enjoy (adult libations included).

Writer Fran Golden's six-year-old granddaughter stands by a castle window overlooking the Rhine River wearing a bucket hat and dress and holding green sign

Adventures by Disney’s Adventures Guides can be a major asset when traveling with young kids. For instance, the writer’s granddaughter’s mood improved after one of the guides gave her a sign and had her lead the tour group.

Courtesy of Fran Golden

Our chosen outings included everything from screaming on rides at Europa-Park , Germany’s huge, Disney-esque amusement park, to admiring Van Gogh art and historic windmills in Amsterdam. Our biggest thrill, roller coasters aside, was canoeing past half-timbered 17th-century houses, including into a lock to be lowered, in Strasbourg, France.

The guides made sure we didn’t miss any references to things along the route that had a Disney connection, such as noting that the astronomical clock at Strasbourg Cathedral is said to have inspired founder Walt Disney to create the iconic “It’s a Small World” ride.

Millie had a hard time with the more intensive history lesson delivered by a local guide at the Heidelberg Castle, the Renaissance landmark in Mannheim, Germany, especially after she answered a question wrong and burst out in tears. But an Adventure Guide stepped in and gave her a tour sign to hold, and Millie embraced her role as leader of our group.

In Cologne, Millie oversaw Captain Minnie, a task assigned to one family each day, which included reporting findings to the entire ship that evening. A moment of grandmotherly pride came as she told passengers she was less excited about the Gothic Cologne Cathedral but loved the Lindt Chocolate Museum, with plenty of free samples. Her dad, she noted, missed the chocolate as he was on a pub tour.

An AmaWaterways river cruise ship sailing the Rhine River Gorge past a castle on green hillside

Adventures by Disney charters river cruise ships, such as this one, from upscale line AmaWaterways. Added bonus: Kids can watch the castles of the Rhine River Gorge from the pool deck.

In the medieval old town in Rüdesheim, Germany, Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet Museum , filled with antique music machines and curiosities, was a memorable hit. One tiny music box with a moving bird may have inspired Walt Disney’s creation of animatronics. Afterwards, we used our provided gondola tickets for higher-up views of the river and hillside vineyards. While her parents stayed in town for a winetasting, Millie and I held hands the whole way back to the ship. At times, too, I reached for my daughter Erin’s hand, which stirred up memories of her as a youngster. We both marveled at how well we all got along during the trip.

Grandmother, mother, and daughter were all smiles when Millie showed off a silky two-piece, lime-green sleeveless top and skirt bought at a designer shop in Strasbourg, which an adult on the ship said made Millie look like Tinker Bell. All three generations had a blast dancing to Taylor Swift at an evening dance party one night. And Millie’s parents loved that a few nights the Junior Adventurers were treated to their own dinner and activities, including movie showings, while parents had the opportunity for more grown-up pursuits, such as taking a nighttime stroll, or dining at the ship’s complimentary Chef’s Table, a set-menu multicourse culinary experience that kids might find boring.

An afternoon sailing through the Rhine Gorge, a 40-mile UNESCO World Heritage site dotted with 30 historic castles, may be reason enough to book this itinerary. But as we floated past the centuries-old citadels, it was hard to keep Millie’s interest, even though we tried to cite fairy tales. She was entirely more interested when I took her to afternoon tea in the ship’s observation lounge.

Fascinated by my granddaughter, I did skip some adult things, such as the ship’s small massage room and gym. These were minor sacrifices. With special attention for youngsters, Adventures by Disney is the perfect outfitter for creating core family memories.

To book: Adventures by Disney’s Rhine river cruises start at $5,799 per person.

Cruise Into European Legend With This Family-Owned River Cruise Line

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Scenery Boat Transportation Vehicle Water Boating Leisure Activities and Sport

Amid the meanders of Europe's storied rivers, where mist-kissed mornings yield to vineyard-clad hillsides and turreted castles pierce the sky, you'll find AmaWaterways riding the current. For over two decades, this family-owned company has been crafting extraordinary journeys along Europe's liquid highways, elevating river cruising with each passing season. The AmaWaterways saga, born in 2002 from the shared dream of three families, is as rich and layered with personal touches as the cultures they traverse. Even cofounder and President Rudi Schreiner, who grew up in Vienna along the Danube River, infuses each itinerary with the intimate memories of his homeland, proof of the insider knowledge that has always propelled AmaWaterways to the vanguard of river cruising.

As the company's renown has blossomed like springtime along the Rhine, so too has its fleet. Today, AmaWaterways' 26 vessels glide along the waterways of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Each ship is a floating sanctuary of sophistication, meticulously curated to amplify every facet of your sojourn. Step aboard, and you'll immediately sense the AmaWaterways difference. The attentive crew pampers guests with an industry-leading ratio and transforms your journey into an intimate, boutique experience. From remembering your preferred wine at dinner to orchestrating surprise celebrations, their dedication to crafting unforgettable moments is unmatched. This commitment to excellence extends to every facet of life on board, particularly in the realm of gastronomy. Indeed, AmaWaterways has elevated river cruise dining to an art form. Multiple included restaurants serve locally sourced gourmet cuisine, each dish a canvas painted with regional flavors. At The Chef's Table, the kitchen—usually hidden to diners—becomes part of the entertainment. Watch in awe as the chefs conjure a multi-course feast before your eyes, each plate paired with hand-selected wines that flow as freely as the rivers outside – and everything offered with AmaWaterways’ compliments.

But be it culinary, wine, or wellness, the passion for immersion doesn't end at the ship's rail. Gone are the days when river cruising catered only to passive sightseers. AmaWaterways offers up to eight included excursions daily, ensuring that every traveler—from history buffs to fitness enthusiasts—can craft their perfect adventure. Knowledgeable local guides unveil the secrets of grand capitals and charming villages alike, while a fleet of complimentary bicycles opens up a world of two-wheeled exploration, whether you'd like to cruise through sun-dappled vineyards or among distant spires of medieval towns piercing the horizon. The company's commitment to wellness, overseen by former Ironman participant Selina Wank, extends from onboard complimentary fitness classes to shore excursions. For those who prefer a gentler pace, leisurely walking tours balance cultural insights with comfort, while “late riser” excursions cater to guests who value a relaxed morning as much as they do exploration.

As diverse as the experiences you'll have are the special-interest tours catering to a wealth of passions. Culinary enthusiasts can find themselves knotting pretzels in Wertheim, Germany, or uncovering hidden gastronomic gems in Vienna's lesser-known neighborhoods. Wine aficionados can revel in AmaWaterways' Celebration of Wine River Cruises , where expert hosts guide you through exclusive tastings and renowned vineyards; liquid journeys through terroir, where Old World classics mingle with New World innovations. AmaWaterways also offers specialty cruises that dive deep into specific heritage and traditions. The Soulful Experiences itineraries, for example, highlight Black history and culture along Europe's waterways like exploring the history of the Black and African diaspora in Lisbon and along the Douro River, while Latin Touch cruises cater to Spanish-speaking travelers.

Just as the rivers change with the seasons, so too do AmaWaterways' carefully curated itineraries unfold their unique charms year-round. Winter transforms Europe into a magical wonderland, where Budapest's outdoor ice rinks glisten against a backdrop of steaming thermal baths. As frost gives way to bloom, spring heralds a revival of both nature and culture, with legendary gardens bursting to life and seasonal delicacies like Germany's prized white asparagus gracing menus. Summer voyages harness the energy of long, sun-drenched days, leading guests to off-the-beaten-path towns inaccessible to larger vessels. Extended daylight hours and overnight stays in select cities invite leisurely exploration, while thoughtful amenities like chilled towels and artisanal ice cream offer respite from the summer heat. Revolutionary vessel AmaMagna —twice the width of traditional river ships—redefines the essence of cruising with unprecedented spaciousness in its expansive Zen Wellness Studio, where the boundaries between ship and sky blur on the Sun Deck, and spirited bouts of pickleball are played with newfound companions.

For those captivated by France following 2024's sporting spectacular, AmaWaterways offers a trio of enchanting itineraries throughout the rest of the year and next. Paris & Normandy weaves together the City of Light's romance with Normandy's poignant history. Taste of Bordeaux guides oenophiles through vineyards and centuries-old châteaux, contrasting the grandeur of Roquetaillade Castle with Saint-Émilion's pastoral charm. Flavors of Burgundy elevates culinary travel to an art form, offering wine tastings in picturesque locales along the scenic Saône River. As 2025 dawns, AmaWaterways charts new waters with three grand 14-night river cruises, designed for travelers thirsting for deeper immersion. Grand Seine & Rhône marries French history, art, and gastronomy across three iconic rivers, a flowing feast for the senses. Grand Seine & Bordeaux expands this sensory journey to include the Garonne and Dordogne, while Grand Rhine & Dutch Canals invites guests on a five-country odyssey from the Netherlands to Switzerland.

Yet among this cornucopia of classic and debut voyages, it's the inaugural Best of the Danube itinerary that has captured the heart of cofounder Rudi Schreiner, crowning it his top pick for 2025. This 7-night round-trip cruise from Budapest promises the quintessential Danube experience, gliding through the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley and exploring grand capitals like Vienna and Bratislava. AmaWaterways' pioneering spirit, however, knows no bounds as 2026 heralds the arrival of AmaSofia on the Rhine and Danube. If there's one thing to note about AmaWaterways, it's that each journey is designed to show you a destination with all five senses—beyond sightseeing to sightfeeling .

As you contemplate your next European adventure, consider the unparalleled experience of an AmaWaterways river cruise. With limited availability on new itineraries and seasonal cruises, now is the time to secure your place on these extraordinary journeys. Rhine River Family Cruises: Uniworld’s River Empress with Teens

Rhine River Family Cruises: Uniworld’s River Empress with Teens

Rhine River Family Cruises

By Heidi Sarna.

By the end of our weeklong Rhine River cruise last July, we had forgotten that months earlier my 13-year-old twin boys had grumbled and pleaded for us to do a big ship cruise where they could play Ping-Pong, shoot hoops and zip down a water slide with other teens.

Their transformation to the other side started within minutes of arriving at the 130-passenger River Empress .

Turns out my experienced more-erudite-than-I-realized offspring were very impressed that a smiling crew member (who we later realized was the master himself, Captain Henk Plaatje !) trotted up to our taxi the moment we reached the pier to whisk our suitcases onto the vessel.

Straight away we were shown to comfy sofas in the fancy main lounge, a sea of damask, brocade and gilded picture frames.

We were offered drinks and snacks in silver bowls to while away an hour or two until our cabin was ready. We were happy campers.

My boys loved their cabin across the hall from our identical room, with its large windows peering out just a few feet above the river and nest-like beds covered in thick European-style duvets and huge pillows.

Over the week, they enjoyed many on-demand movies on the TV, from Ant Man to Monument Men, Meet the Parents and Gandhi,  welcome consolation given the weak Wifi on board ruled out playing on their phones or laptops. Though they were definitely not happy about this initially, they got over it pretty fast and it wound up being a blessing that pushed them to socialize the old fashioned way.

Until fairly recently, river cruises in Europe were strictly a seniors-only affair — all about older couples planted on deck watching the scenery float by with a cup of tea or a glass of rosé. Not anymore. Rhine River family cruises are definitely “a thing” during school holidays.

On our sailing there were 39 kids under age 18. Uniworld, like some other companies, including Disney Cruise Line, are offering more special family cruises than ever before, mostly during the summer.

Europe river cruises work well for families for a few reasons: their intimate size makes it easy to meet to new friends; they stop at one or two ports a day, assuring no one gets stir crazy being on board for too long; many carry bicycles for use in port; and rivers are serene places to sail with little chance for choppy water.

Our Castles along the Rhine itinerary from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam was a week of back-to-back visits to medieval towns and cities along both the French and German sides of the Rhine. Each of the seven ports offered some combination of charming timbered buildings painted in bright colors, towering Gothic cathedrals and wending old canals lined with flowers.

Walking tours and other excursions in every port are included in the fares, with several designed for kids on our sailing such as an adventure climbing park.

Picturesque Ports Along the Rhine

Our favorite stops included  Strasbourg , the capital city of the Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine region of France and a lovely town of cobbled traffic-free lanes and the Grand Île Unesco World Heritage site, an island within the city bordered by canals and home to the 15th-century gothic Strasbourg cathedral and other old churches.

We also loved  Speyer , on the German side of the river. Here, we split up, our boys going with a group of other kids and some parents on a guided excursion to a transportation museum to walk on the wing of a retired Boeing 747.

My husband and I, along with another couple from the boat, choose a guided tour of the massive and beautiful Speyer Cathedral , dating back to the 11th century and considered artistically and architecturally to be one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe. It’s been a Unesco World Heritage site since 1981. After the tour, we headed to the nearby Domhof Hausbrauerei for some liquid refreshments.

In Rudesheim , Germany, we took a cable car ride above the emerald-green hillside vineyards to Niederwald Heights for a nature walk and views of a particularly scenic section of the Rhine Valley. One son joined us for the outing, and the other stayed on board to sleep in.

Later that day, the kids especially liked tours of two castles in this region, Rheinstein and Marksburg, where they could climb up inside narrow towers, try on armor and learn about life in medieval times.

The big draw in  Cologne  was its massive Gothic cathedral   with UNESCO World Heritage Site status; I loved its towering spires and gorgeous stained glass, particularly a modern abstract window by German artist Gerhard Richter caught my eye.

The highlight of the week was clearly the two days spent on the gorgeous Middle Rhine, from Rudesheim to Koblenz , the classic region where medieval castles one after another seem to grow out of the steep rocky slopes, in between quilt-like patches of vineyards, deservedly earning the area UNESCO World Heritage status.

Bicycling Every Day on Our Uniworld Rhine River Cruise

A big plus for our family was the option to use the boat’s complimentary bicycles in port. Nearly every day we hopped on one of the sturdy Swiss-made bikes for rides along the paths flanking the river.

As the boat only departed Basel in the evening, after lunch on our first day we headed out along the Rhine, towards the center of Basel, pedaling past an arty industrial area, a bustling sunbathing spot and an elegant neighborhood of river-facing mansions.

We got up-close views of the popular summertime pastime of “Rheinschwimmen,” when adventurous folks hop into the water for a float down a section of the cold fast-moving Rhine River clutching brightly colored backpack-like waterproof bags sold all over town to keep phones and wallets dry.

Another day we signed up for one of the week’s handful of guided tours, the four of us and about 15 others disembarking at Boppard and riding for about 20 kilometers behind the ship’s fitness instructor, to Koblenz.

It was a lovely pedal that meandered along the river, through villages and past hillside vineyards. Another day docked in Germersheim, after our excursion in Speyer, I biked solo for an hour along a quiet undeveloped stretch of the river.

Bikes are available on every sailing, and extras are brought on board for family cruises (about 40 on our voyage, including child sizes).

Rhine River Family Cruises

Unfortunately, not all of the 1,320-kilometer Rhine is so scenic, including the southern part between Basel and Strasbourg that was canalized in the 1930s and 40s to improve navigability. Industrial complexes with belching smokestacks, especially around Ludwigshafen, Cologne and Dusseldorf, dot other sections of the Rhine.

RELATED: Heidi tells us more about the history and science of the Rhine River.

Luckily during those bits, most people were happy to hit the small gym or spa, attend the once- or twice-weekly lectures (on our cruise, a children’s book author did a reading), or chill in their comfortable cabin.

Four suites measure 214 square feet and the rest of the rooms 151 square feet, all with smart fabric wall treatments, marble-clad bathrooms, plush Savoir beds handcrafted in England, and large windows or sliding doors (French balconies) just a few feet above the river. As there are no connecting cabins or triples (as is the case on most river boats), families must book multiple cabins.

While some kids stuck to their parents and others were older teens, on our cruise about 20 formed a vibrant kid community that thrived whenever they were on board, which was usually mid afternoons onwards after the shore excursions wrapped up.

From a precocious and popular 5-year-old from England to my guys at the upper end of the age bracket, the band spent many hours in the playroom (the converted library for the week) taking turns playing FIFA soccer video games and generally having a ball, racing back and forth to the big jars of marshmallows and Gummy Bears offered for the week on a marble-topped credenza in the Main Lounge.

Two extra crew members were on board for our family cruise to help supervise the kiddos and special activities like a story-reading session, knot tying, strudel-making class and long kids’ tables at dinner.

During the big day zigzagging along the Middle Rhine past all those legendary medieval castles, the kids piled toppings onto still-warm waffles at a mini buffet set up at one end of the sun-drenched top deck, while the adults snapped photos, listened to short narratives on the personal tour-guide devices everyone had been issued, chatted with new friends, soaked up the scenery, and sipped glasses of chardonnay and German lager.

Dinner & Afterwards on Our Rhine River Cruise

As a family, we all looked forward to mealtime in the stylish restaurant, with its red leather upholstery, green water glasses, and floor-to-ceiling windows that allowed the river scene to be the backdrop as we ate.

At the lunch buffet, my boys gravitated to the pasta with alfredo sauce, fish and chips, carving station, and sandwiches, while mom and dad hit the salad bar and sampled the German options, from Weinershnitzel and potato salad, to sauerkraut and sausages.

For dinner, jackets weren’t required but many wore them anyway. Menus featured several options for every course including a regional dish, the likes of a delicious roasted chicken with mushroom gravy, escargot Alsace style with a splash of Reisling, and traditional Blackforest cake.

Kids could also choose from their own menu, with classics like macaroni and cheese, and burgers.

small ship cruises on the Rhine RIver

Great views of the river scene while dining. * Photo: Heidi Sarna

For the adults, complimentary red and white wine were generously poured at dinner, usually one or both were German or French from the Alsace region. Before and after dinner each day, we always hit the elegant Main Lounge to relax with a glass or two of the dry and tasty Sekt German sparkling wine, and listen to the talented Cezar sing and play piano.

Pre-dinner there was a talk from the cruise director about the following day’s highlights. Post dining, musical acts were brought on board a few nights for the grown-ups, while the kids went back to their virtual soccer tournaments or to the small Patio Lounge down on Deck 1 to play board games and drink hot chocolate from a coffee and drinks machines on call 24/7.

Each day was perfect, as the  River Empress   with its lovely interiors and excellent service glided down the Rhine to some of Europe’s most charming towns and cities. What a wonderful family holiday.

Tips for Family Rhine River Family Cruises

  • Fares include meals, shore excursions, tips, and wine, spirits and soft drinks. Family sailings tend to be higher priced than non-family sailings because there are special activities and excursions offered.
  • Basel and Amsterdam are two beautiful and historic cities that are definitely worth a few day’s stay before and after the cruise.
  • Bring layers, as summers temps on this itinerary can vary between the 60s in Amsterdam and the 80s and 90s in Basel.

Ten Reasons Why Guys Love a Viking River Cruises Rhine Getaway

I tend to be a major advocate for a cruise lifestyle. Simply put, I LOVE the experience of being on a boat, but I know a lot of guys who aren't convinced that a cruise is for them and not every line or itinerary is. However, last fall I had the chance to explore the Rhine thanks to Viking Cruises and I still can't believe how many opportunities there are for guys to have an amazing time on this route!

As you know I tend to live a pretty privileged life and have been exploring a lot of amazing destinations but this cruise with Viking was one I still think about constantly. For many of you, this might be a once in a lifetime adventure ... but it's an experience you will cherish forever.

Our Viking River cruise took us from Basel Switzerland up the Rhine River to Amsterdam on their " Rhine Getaway " tour. These are just a few of the reasons why I can't wait to go back again!

Tour Medieval Castles

Virtually every city has ancient fortifications and guard towers that could be considered castles by American standards. However, during this journey you'll be able to see some fantastic examples of medieval castles. These include the ruins of  Heidelburg Castle  where among other things, you'll be able to see a 220,000 liter wine barrel that dates back to 1751 when it was built to collect taxes paid to the the castle in the form of wine. Further up the river, you'll be able to tour the 800 year old  Marksburg Castle , one of the only castles that escaped destruction during the numerous wars between French and German armies.

As you cruise up the river from Heidelburg to Marksburg castles, you'll also be able to see dozens more medieval castles along the route. It's hard to describe but for an entire morning guests will be able to sit up on the top deck and watch as you pass medeival towns with castles perched above them. Prior to this adventure, I just assumed you'd see one or two. Instead, there's one at every turn of the river - though most pale in comparison to the two above.

Go Coo Coo in The Black Forest

While I'd love to come back and explore this region of Germany, the excursion to explore the Black Forest is a must do. You'll be able to learn about this unique cultural area of the country including seeing an example of a traditional Vogtsbauernhof building, sample Black Forest cake, drink schnaps, and buy hand-made coo coo clocks produced by local artisans. While most of the clocks are traditional in nature, I did see one themed for the ultimate Porche fan! It's a great deal at only €2,399 too.

German Beer

Any guy that enjoys beer deserves to one day visit Germany. For me, I'm a big fan of Kolsh and so the opportunity to visit Cologne and drink true Kolsh ... and not just Kolsh-style beer was one of the highlights. Truthfully though, the American brewers have surpassed the beers we had on this trip and I can't honestly say that any of the beers were "the best I've ever had" that doesn't matter. It's about the experience and the memories of sitting in a pub with a half dozen empty glasses on the table and sharing memories of the day with a good friend. Well, that and the guy who yelled at me about his "cloak", making me for a moment think that I had been transported to a Tolkien novel.

French (and German!) Wine

Beer isn't the only game in town and this route takes you through one of the world's best wine regions - Alsace France. Alsace wineries are French - but with Germanic influence and you'll find a variety of primarily white wines including Riesling and Gewurztraminer but also many other varietals. Each at lunch and dinner, wine is included with the meal and so even if you don't venture into a wine shop during the day, you'll be able to explore the bounty of wines from the region.

However, I absolutely do encourage you to take the opportunity to explore wine shops in town and seek out small, local gems that you can't get back home. Unlike a typical "ocean cruise", Viking doesn't have a naughty room. This means that there is no reason to smuggle wine back on board. They just ask that you don't drink the wine in public spaces.

Top Shelf Drinks in the Viking Bar

Viking's bar is extremely well stocked with premium whiskey, cognac, and eau-de-vie as well as beer and wine of course. I was very impressed with their ability to whip up cocktails as well as the fact that even those with the "alcohol package" were served very promptly without skimping. On one evening, the gentleman next to me seemingly had a bottomless dram of Scotch and that's always a great thing! It is also surprisingly affordable compared to what you might find elsewhere. On Viking River Cruises the cost is $150 per seven-day cruise and Viking Ocean also offers their version for $139 per seven-day cruise. (Like all similar offers though, both parties sharing the cabin must purchase the package.)

Amazing Historic Cities to Explore

There's something magical about walking through medieval towns surrounded by buildings that are hundreds - or in the case of cathedrals and castles, thousands of years old. That's to say nothing of shopping, exploring sidewalk cafes, or simply standing on the corner listening to some street music. Each one of the cities you stop at has it's own personality, from Colmar - said to have inspired Beauty and the Beast to Cologne - where you can clearly see the changes due to the ravages of World War II, and Strasbourg - the home of the EU Parliament and a hub of modern Europe. Of course, even smaller towns such as Rudesheim am Rhein which have their own totally unique personality too!

Seasonal Festivals - (Yes Guys - Christmas Markets are Awesome!)

Each of these cities has fantastic seasonal festivals including Carnival in Cologne and the Amsterdam Dance Event - a five-day electronic music festival held each October. However, for Christmas - everyone has a Christmas market ... or multiple different ones spread across the city. Honestly, at first I didn't think I would dig this since back home, I HATE the experience of being dragged to a Christmas market. Instead of just cheap trinkets and a handful of food vendors there are hundreds of artisans and an equal number of vendors serving amazing food and drink.

From eating fondu out of a hollowed out baguette in Basel to sausages and Kolsh in Cologne, and hot spiced gluehwein at pretty much every stop you aren't going to go hungry here. For the more adventurous though, make sure to try escargot in Strasbourg and pickled herring in Amsterdam!

One thing to watch out for though is that unlike in the United States, bathrooms aren't exactly publicly available. Some of the larger festivals had pay-toilets but otherwise you need to visit a pub and buy a drink to use the bathroom so plan accordingly.

Awesome Excursion Options

In case you haven't figured this out yet, a Viking River Cruise is far from your typical "Caribbean Cruise" that you might have taken with the family. Excursions here are clearly designed with adults in mind and while we didn't get a chance to do everything, here are some of the awesome excursion options that guys will love on Rhine Getaway Cruise.

Explore Basel's Watch Industry -  Each year, Basel plays host to one of the top watch conventions in the world. While this is not an official Viking tour, we think it would be awesome to sneak into the conference and see the latest and greatest watches being produced today. Even if you aren't there in March, don't worry. There are plenty of fantastic watch stores for your shopping pleasure.

Colmar World War II Tour -  Viking offers a tour to see the Colmar Pocket, where American and French forces pushed back the Nazi troops during the winter of 1944-1945.

Mercedes-Benz Factory Tour in Strasbourg -  Tour a Mercedes factory and see how some of our favorite cars are built.

Wine Tasting and Dinner at Eberbach Monastery -  Remember what I was saying about the wine? Here's your chance to have a fantastic dinner and tasting in a 900 year old former Cistercian monastery surrounded by lush vineyards.

Climb to the Roof of Cologne's Cathedral -  This 800 year old cathedral is one of the few buildings left standing after the Allied forces leveled most of the rest of the city. The cathedral remains the tallest twin-spired church in the world at 515 feet tall!

Dutch Cheese Making in Kinderdijk -  Throughout your adventure, you're going to be enjoying some of the best cheeses in the world but now you'll be able to learn more about how the Dutch make theirs. Just don't cut the cheese - or if you do, apologize to your neighbor.

I can't say enough about how great of a destination Amsterdam is for guys to visit. Depending on which direction your cruise takes you, this city will be your start or finish and it's worth adding a couple extra days. It's among the most progressive cities in the world and literally anything goes. There are fantastic museums here ranging from the  Van Gogh Museum  to the hemp museum and everything in between.

This city also hosts a variety of distilleries and of course is the home of  Heineken Brewery  as well. On top of all that, the city has an incredibly diverse food scene reflecting its history of global trade so make sure to check out various options from an Indonesian Rice Table to classic Dutch cuisine. You'll also want to stop and get some fries at one of the hundreds of street stands scattered across the city and check out the different toppings.

You'll be Waited On Hand and Foot

I can't say enough about how amazing the staff is on  Viking River Cruises . Typically, the entire sector is known for great service but the officers and crew here are top notch. From remembering your breakfast order to welcoming you back to the boat by name with a fresh towel, there was never a moment when I didn't feel special.

Discover why Viking Cruises are perfect for guys, offering luxury, adventure, and unique experiences on every voyage.

Alfonso Ribeiro Says 'I Didn't Think I Would Enjoy' a Disney Cruise, But Admits He Had a Blast (Exclusive)

The Dancing with the stars host took a multigenerational family trip on the intimate, eight-day Adventures by Disney river cruise

Courtesy of Disney

Alfonso Ribeiro was in for a surprise when he set off on a unique cruise this summer!

In the beginning of August, the Dancing With the Stars host, 52, embarked on an intimate, eight-day River Rhine Cruise by Adventures by Disney with nine of his family members for a multigenerational vacation. The group included Alfonso, his wife Angela Unkrich , his youngest three children — sons Alfonso "AJ" Lincoln, 10, and Anders Reyn, 9, and daughter Ava Sue, 5 — his parents and his in-laws.

When it came to agreeing to the excursion, which makes stops in Strasbourg, France; Rüdesheim, Germany; Amsterdam and more, Alfonso tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that he needed a bit of convincing.

"Everybody was on board and I was like, 'All right, I guess if y'all want to do it, I'll go do it.' And then I ended up really enjoying it," he admits.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum shared, "[I] didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did. It was kind of a shock. But I really, really enjoyed it. It was really a fun time. The kids really loved it [ and] my wife loved it." The cruise even got the stamp of approval from his mother, who told him, "This was really one of my nicest vacations I've ever been on."

Unlike Disney's large ocean cruise ships, Alfonso's voyage was on a smaller ship that only holds about 150 guests, allowing the crew to offer more personalized service.

Alfonso described his time on board as "really intimate, really cozy," noting, "It's the same as a normal river cruise, except Disney elevates it big time."

Speaking about the Adventure Guides and experts on the boat, the America's Funniest Home Videos host said that they arranged nearly every part of his vacation. "So there's completely nothing you need to do. They've got all the excursions planned," he explained.

His favorite stop was in Strasburg, which is a small town in northeastern Germany. The itinerary for this part of the River Rhine Cruise includes a tour of the city on a Batorama canal boat.

The actor also enjoyed a sight-seeing excursion during which the guests gathered on the top deck of the boat and watched like "50 castles along the river." He said, "By this point, you've created friends, there other parents or other families that are all hanging out. So everyone's on the top deck, and there was wine and cheese. It was just beautiful."

Other adventures offered on the trip, according to Adventures by Disney include riding a toboggan and learning how to make wooden pipes, visiting a medieval village, exploring a wine cave, and going on a coffee and hot chocolate tasting tour.

Despite his trepidations, Alfonso says he came away from his river cruise a true believe and has been sharing that they are in fact "for everyone."

Inspired by the Destination

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

Guest Favorites in River Cruising

Along the Danube... the Rhine... the Rhône... the Seine... or the Douro... our European river cruises are all about the unique cultural access you'll enjoy wherever we visit... the strong connections you'll make with the people you'll meet... and the traditions and genuine little moments they'll share with you  along the way...
