Osaka serves as the primary international travel hub into southern Japan, and is one of the nation’s most culturally dynamic cities. Osaka city is the largest city in the Kansai region, and a great center of Japanese arts and culture. As the second largest city in Japan, it is southern Japan’s economic powerhouse. Formerly known as Naniwa, it was Japan’s first capital in the 7th and 8th centuries. And at the forefront of Osaka’s historical treasures stands magnificent Osaka Castle. The original fortress was built by the famed samurai warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, though it has had to be rebuilt a few times over the years. The castle tower includes a museum to commemorate the life of Hideyoshi and to honor Osaka Castle’s history. For a slice of contemporary Osaka, there is Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi. Here is where locals go for a night on the town – where they enjoy the local okonomiyaki (a pancake with various toppings) and takoyaki (grilled octopus rolled in dough). The people of Osaka are known to be funny and down-to-earth, although, at times, cruder and pushier than other Japanese people. And Dotonbori is full of classic examples of their blunt and sarcastic sense of humor in the large displays and bright signage lighting up the entertainment district. What our customers say
4.9 stars based on 555 REVIEWS
Billy, our guide was wonderful and very informative. Our driver was super and the van was just the right size. The 2 other guests were the best.
The tours was very interesting as it allows me to have a very good idea about Japan. I was able to visit many places such as temple, shrines, castle, Japanese gardens as well as historical places. Additionally, the tour allowed me to have nice experience from Japan such as the good food, Tea ceremony, the rapid train and typical Japanese Hotel. Furthermore, I have discovered through the tour the lovely nature of Japan and learned a lot of information about its history and its tradition.
Absolute;ly loved the tour! Billy was a fantastic guide and very informative about the culture and entertaining.
This was a fantastic way to see Japan. We saw so many sites and we had the opportunity to experience so many things. Learning how to make sushi was not only fun, but it was also a tasty lunch. Billy was a knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. Kamata San is definitely a highly skilled bus driver. Learning about the varying cuisines in the different regions of Japan was a delicious lesson to learn.
Great variety of places, unique experiences and entertaining, informative Guide. AJT staff very helpful - good to have personal service.

English-speaking Travel Agencies in Japan
Exploring new cultures and nations can easily pique one's interest, but without a guide who understands what you're looking for, planning what to do can be a nightmare, which is why we strongly advise working with one of Japan's many English-friendly travel agencies.
While travel companies have mostly fallen out of favor in the West, many Japanese people still rely on them to plan their trips. Because so many people are vying for a piece of the pie, you, the traveler, have a better chance of saving money and having the kind of holiday that only a cultural insider can provide.

Popular Locations to Visit in Japan
Before you hire an agent, however, it’s good to have a basic idea of where you would like to go. Below are some of the most popular destinations to help you narrow down your travel plans.
You could easily spend your entire trip exploring Tokyo and still find yourself wanting to see more. It offers something for everyone from sports and entertainment, to art, culture, history, cuisine, and shopping.
Kyoto was once the medieval capital of Japan. Much of the old city is still preserved, making it a top destination for Japanophiles hoping for a peek into the country’s feudal past. You can still fully immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture by visiting a variety of shrines, temples, and shop-lined alleys.
Distance from Tokyo: 135 minutes by bullet train
Nikko , located to the north of Tokyo, is home to the famous Toshogu shrine. This shrine was dedicated to the Tokugawa shogunate and is considered one of the most beautiful and ornate shrines in all of Japan. The surrounding forest includes an impressive set of waterfalls, as well as some wonderful onsen , or natural hot springs.
Distance from Tokyo: 140 minutes by limited express train
Kamakura is a leisurely day trip from Tokyo and full of shrines and castles. This area was the capital of Japan during the Kamakura period. It offers a great combination of historical sites and hiking opportunities. Go just a little farther out to the nearby island of Enoshima for a fun day at the beach — a spot so relaxing you won’t believe Shinjuku is less than two hours away.
Distance from Tokyo: 60 minutes by local train
Mt. Fuji, Japan’s iconic volcano, is unmistakable. The official climbing season is from May to October. It’s recommended that you only attempt the ascent during this period. There are many official groups with which you can make the ascent, so only seasoned climbers should try to go up solo.
Distance from Tokyo: 170 minutes by express and local trains
Popular Seasonal Activities in Japan
There’s something for nearly every outdoor interest when it comes to touring Japan, but there are certain areas and activities that are particularly worth exploring depending on the season.
The most important event of spring is hanami, a fleeting week where all of the cherry blossoms bloom simultaneously in a blaze of soft pink. While it’s possible to guess which week will be blessed with the event each year, there are often changes in weather that result in the window changing, so we recommend casting your net wide for a longer stay to ensure that you get the chance to experience a picnic beneath a radiant canopy of flowers.
Summer is the typical season for international tourists, but be warned: major metropolises like Tokyo and Osaka get uncomfortably hot and humid. That being said, Japan has keeping cool down to an art form, and the most popular outdoor activities include summer festivals boasting music, singing, and drums that you will hear deep into the night.
There are also many opportunities to enjoy massive firework festivals throughout the season in Tokyo, Osaka, and other major cities. If your trip happens to line up with one of these events, be sure not to miss it.
The fall foliage is truly something to behold throughout Japan. The displays across the mountains rival any in the world. Especially against the backdrop of so many ancient temples and shrines, you can begin to understand why the Japanese hold nature sacred. With temperatures cooling, this is an ideal time to come to Japan.
Winter is perhaps the least popular of the seasons, unless you head north of Tokyo. Nagano and Niseko’s alpine slopes covered in powder snow are worth a visit at least once in your life if you’re an avid skier. After a full day’s activities, it’s common to find yourself sitting in front of a steaming communal hotpot or a bowl of intensely flavorful ramen. This is also a popular season to indulge in a hot spring vacation.
Arriving in Japan
The final question is where you will be flying into Japan: Haneda or Narita. Almost all international travel into Japan goes through these two major hubs, both located near Tokyo. While Narita is larger, it’s also further out of the way in Tokyo’s neighboring prefecture of Chiba. Haneda, on the other hand, is right in Tokyo.
Both airports have had significant facelifts in the last few years, and right now it’s not that difficult to travel into Tokyo from either one. If you would like more information, check out our full guides to traveling from Narita and Haneda into Tokyo

Private Tour Osaka’s services as absolutely top-notch. I am so happy that we made the choice to engage their services. Prior to our trip, Marine was very helpful and prompt in answering to all my queries. Both Marine and Shinji were also very mindful of our needs during the tour and in recommending places to eat making sure we get quality food at reasonable pricing, Both the car and the van were very clean and comfortable (especially the new Alphard). Thank you Marine and Shinji for making our trip to Osaka, Nara, Kyoto and Kobe so memorable. My family had a wonderful holiday. Hope to see you both again one day.
Love these VIP tour! Especially with Marine, who is so approachable and sweet. Can speak English too. Shinji, our private rich driver/tour guide is so friendly. Can speak a little bit in English which you can understand. He recommends what restaurant to go to and where to shop. The food he recommends are Oishi! These team are open for your suggestions and ready to answer your questions. What i like most is they are efficient and flexible. If you want to go to Osaka , i recommend this tour . Thank you Shinji and Marine for making our Osaka visit memorable and we gain new friends and that’s both of you.

Osaka - Private Travel
A liberal attitude, superb food, incredible shopping, and a blaze of neon ignite Osaka, Japan’s center of conviviality.
Luxury travel to Japan’s third-largest city offers the perfect chance to let your hair down in what is otherwise a rather conservative nation. Osaka is not without its storied history – start at Osaka-jo, a 1931 concrete reconstruction of a late 1500s castle, with many structures from the early 1600s still standing. Take time for the surrounding parkland, especially pretty dressed in spring’s cherry blossoms or autumn’s reds. To get a perspective on your
surroundings, take a trip to the observation deck of the Hara Hiroshi-designed Umeda Sky Building, which delivers 360-degree views from its twin towers. The five-story escalator within a glass tube is a merry ride. Find penguins, jellyfish, seals, otters, sharks, manta rays, and more at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan at the water’s edge, one of the
best in Japan. For nightlife, head to Dotombori, where neon lights your way along the promenades and down pedestrian streets jammed with restaurants. The Shin-Sekai entertainment district, once an amusement park, is slightly rough around the edges, but that is half the fun. A dozen diverse shopping districts satisfy retail fever here, from underground malls to Haute boutiques to massive commercial blocks like the Umeda Shopping Arcade. America Mura is where you’ll find all the hip brands, and Shinsaibashi-Suji Street is the region for upscale retailers – not bad for a mall that is more than 400 years old.

Osaka (, Ōsaka) is Japan's second largest metropolitan area after Tokyo . It has been the economic powerhouse of the Kansai Region for many centuries. Osaka was formerly known as Naniwa. Before the Nara Period , when the capital used to be moved with the reign of each new emperor , Naniwa was once Japan's capital city, the first one ever known.
In the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi chose Osaka as the location for his castle , and the city may have become Japan's political capital if Tokugawa Ieyasu had not terminated the Toyotomi lineage after Hideyoshi's death and established his government in distant Edo (Tokyo) .

How to Buy the ICOCA, an IC Card Popular in Osaka and Kyoto
ICOCA, a rechargeable smart card issued by JR West, is convenient when traveling in Osaka, Kyoto, and other areas in Kansai. This article explains how to buy and recharge the ICOCA card, along with information about the mobile app version.
About the ICOCA Card
ICOCA is an IC card issued by JR West, mainly used in Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and other cities in the Kansai, Chugoku, and Shikoku regions. As of 2013, the card can be used all over Japan.
It is convenient for those who plan to ride trains or subways in Osaka, Kyoto, or Kobe.
Where to Buy an ICOCA Card?
ICOCA can be purchased at vending machines in JR West stations.
The price is 2,000 yen. The refundable deposit is 500 yen, and 1,500 yen can be used to ride trains. It can also be purchased at stations of major private railroad companies in Kansai (Hankyu/Hanshin/Keihan/Nankai/Kintetsu) and subway stations in Osaka, Kyoto, or Kobe.
You can also buy your ICOCA online , and pick it up at an airport in the Kansai region or at a JR West station when you arrive in Japan.
How to Buy an ICOCA Card at the Station
It is easy to purchase an ICOCA card. First, look for a vending machine at a JR station in western Japan.
This is the default menu. The design may change, but it is basically the same procedure.
Touch the "buy ICOCA" button.
Touch the white "2000" button.
There will be an explanation of the deposit on the bottom half of the screen. Please note that ICOCA for children can be purchased only at the JR Ticket Office. After touching the button, the payment process will appear on the screen.
Insert the money in the slot below. The next step will appear on the screen.
Confirm the amount of money.
If the amount is correct, choose either "payment (print receipt)" or "payment (no receipt)," which will appear on the lower right-hand side of the screen. To stop the payment, touch the cancel button on the left.
Touch the "issue card" button, and the change will be dispensed with the card.
With a mobile version of ICOCA/Suica, users can ride trains with their smartphones. The details for iPhone and Android phones are introduced below. A Suica version, shown in the photograph above, is similar to an ICOCA version.
To use a mobile ICOCA, the phone model must be newer than iPhone 8 and updated to iOS 16.
In the iPhone wallet, touch the "+" button on the upper right-hand side and choose ICOCA. Follow the instructions on the screen, and input the amount of money, from 1,000 yen to 20,000 yen. The process will end by confirming the terms of service.
This virtual card can be linked to the Apple Pay credit card.
Android Phone
Mobile ICOCA for an Android phone is more complicated than an iPhone version.
The Osaifu-Keitai app must be used, along with a Wester account provided by JR West. A Wester app can only be downloaded from a Japanese Google Play store, and the application process page is written in Japanese.
It would be easier for Android phone users from abroad to purchase an ICOCA in Japan or book a card online.
How to Recharge an ICOCA
There are two ways to recharge IC cards, Suica or ICOCA, either at a train station or a convenience store.
At Train Stations
Touch the "to top" button on the right-hand side of the main menu, and various amounts will appear on the screen.
Choose an amount, and insert the money in the slot. Please note that the process may vary depending on the railway company.
At Convenience Stores
While ICOCA can be topped at stations, it may be easier to use the ATMs at convenience stores such as 7-Eleven.
Touch the "charge" button on the upper half of the screen and put the card under the reader. Several amounts will appear, so choose one and put the money in the slot. There is no extra fee, and it is easy to use.
If the process turns out to be difficult, ask the staff to recharge the card. Hand the card and money to the staff and ask them to "charge the card."
Convenience Stores with ATMs : 7-Eleven, Family Mart, Lawson, Poplar, Ministop, Daily Yamazaki, etc.
Where Can the ICOCA Be Used?
ICOCA can be used all over Japan on JR, major private railroad companies, and buses. F
or details, please check the JR West official website (Japanese). The site also has information on other IC cards, such as PASMO and Suica.
While there may be slight differences for each railroad company, touch the card on the blue panel to go through the ticket gate, like the photo above. It is the same when exiting the gate.
How to Use the ICOCA as E-Money
ICOCA can also be used at various stores, including convenience stores; drugstores such as Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Daikoku, and Tsuruha; along with fast-food restaurants such as McDonald's, Matsuya (beef bowl chain), CoCo Ichibann-ya (curry), and Mos Burger.
For further information, please check the official ICOCA website (Japanese).
Q1. Can I ride a bus with ICOCA? A: ICOCA can be used if the bus has an IC card reader.
Q2. Can I ride an express train with ICOCA? A: The normal fare can be paid with ICOCA, but certain limited express trains require an additional express fare and/or a reserved seat ticket. Make sure to purchase a limited express ticket at the station.
Q3. Can ICOCA be used in the entire Kansai region? A: ICOCA cannot be used at stations that don't have IC card readers, so be sure to check in advance. If you find that ICOCA cannot be used after arriving at the destination, ask the station staff to erase the boarding record and pay the fare in cash.
Q4. What should I do if the balance isn't enough at the exit? A: Look for an automated cashier near the ticket gate and recharge the card.
Q5. Can I return the card? A: ICOCA can be returned at the JR West Ticket Office. The 500 yen deposit and the remaining balance, minus the handling fee, will be refunded.
Q6. Can ICOCA be used outside of the Kansai or Kanto regions? A: Yes. Any transport system supported by an IC card reader will accept ICOCA.
Use the ICOCA for Transportation and Shopping in Kansai
ICOCA cards purchased in the Kansai region can also be used in Tokyo. The same applies to using PASMO or Suica cards in the Kansai region. Choose an IC card of your preference, and go on a tour across Japan.

Holidaymakers 'traumatised' after using travel agent
Holidaymakers have said they were left "stressed" and "traumatised" following chaotic holidays booked through the same travel agent.
More than 30 people in the Winchester area have formed a Facebook group making allegations about their experiences with a representative of InteleTravel.
The company said it had terminated the contract of one of its representatives, and Hampshire police confirmed a woman had been arrested on suspicion of fraud by abuse of position.
The BBC has been in contact with the woman, but she is yet to comment.
Customers have said they were left with unbooked flights, unpaid hotels, and ended up out of pocket.
Marisa Noyce booked a holiday to Morocco with her husband and daughter, but said shortly beforehand she realised the hotel had not been booked.
She said they agreed to take a break in Crete instead, but when they arrived the hotel there was not booked either.
Over the next few days they chased the representative for the money, but it was not paid in full until a day before they checked out.
"We had to agree on a totally different destination, different country, different everything," Ms Noyce said.
She said they had not had any explanation and the experience "ruined our holiday and my 40th".
Claire Marshall previously went on a holiday booked through the same person that went to plan, though it did involve chasing up paperwork.
However, the next holiday, which she went on with her daughter to Tenerife, began with the boarding passes only arriving the night before, and with incorrect names on them which cost money to change, she said.
When they landed she said they were told to go to a different hotel without explanation.
Ms Marshall said: "I had the embarrassment of having to pay extra money... sitting in the reception of a five-star hotel looking like an absolute idiot waiting for money to come through like I couldn’t afford to pay for it, when actually I’d already paid months earlier."
She had already booked a second holiday the following weekend with the same representative, and said it ended up having the wrong flights booked, and incorrect boarding pass details again.
"It's a relief to know I’m not on my own but it doesn’t take away from the fact that we have had a horrific experience and it has traumatised me," she said.
"I don’t want to ever book with anyone ever again and I want to do it all myself."
'Dodgy-looking passes'
The BBC heard from another woman who said her family's trip to Lapland had no flights or accommodation booked for it.
Another said for her trip to Lanzarote the boarding passes came through last minute and had mistakes on them, while the wrong hotel rooms were booked.
"We were sent very dodgy-looking boarding passes, again with spelling mistakes that would not match the passports, also only two of the three needed," she said.
In a statement InteleTravel said it was "aware of issues" regarding the representative and was "taking the matter very seriously".
It said it had "alerted all the relevant authorities, including industry organisations" and was working closely with them, but was "unable to provide any further information at this time due to the nature of the ongoing investigations".
The company said it had "robust anti-fraud measures and a commitment to working with industry peers to eradicate fraud".
ABTA, the association of travel agents and tour operators, said it had been contacted by Inteletravel about the case.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was investigating a number of reports in relation to allegations of fraud.
"It has been alleged that money was taken for holidays by a woman operating as a travel agent, which were then not booked.
"A 39-year-old woman from Winchester has been arrested on suspicion of fraud by abuse of position. She has been released on police bail until 8 December."
