Important information

1 Companion Pass® qualifying points are earned from revenue flights booked through Southwest®, points earned on Rapid Rewards® Credit Cards, and base points earned from Rapid Rewards partners. The following do not count as Companion Pass qualifying points: purchased points; points transferred between Members; points converted from hotel and car loyalty programs, e-Rewards®, Valued Opinions, and Diners Club®; points earned from Rapid Rewards program enrollment, tier bonus points; flight bonus points; and partner bonus points (with the exception of the Rapid Rewards Credit Cards from Chase). No points nor tier or Companion Pass qualifying points will be awarded for flights taken by the Companion when flying on a Companion Pass reservation. Cash + Points bookings will not earn Rapid Rewards  points, tier qualifying points for A-List or A-List Preferred status or  Companion Pass qualifying points. Points earned during a billing cycle on a Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Card from Chase are not available for redemption or qualification for Companion Pass status until they are posted on your billing statement and posted to your Rapid Rewards account. Only points posted on your billing statements and posted to your Rapid Rewards account during the same calendar year are available for qualification for Companion Pass status. For example, if you make a purchase after your December billing statement cycle date, the points on those purchases will not count toward Companion Pass status in the year the purchase was made; they will appear on your January billing statement and post to your Rapid Rewards account in January.

Companion Pass Qualifying Points Boost: As a Southwest Rapid Rewards Cardmember, you will earn one boost of 10,000 Companion Pass qualifying points each calendar year. The boost will be deposited into your eligible Rapid Rewards account by January 31st each calendar year or up to 30 days after account opening. To receive Companion Pass qualifying points boost your credit card account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. Only one credit card account per Southwest Rapid Rewards Member (Rapid Rewards Member must be the primary Cardmember on that account), is eligible for one boost of 10,000 Companion Pass qualifying points per calendar year. JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. is not responsible for the provision of, or failure to provide, the stated benefits and services.

2 Upon check in, you and your Companion will receive sequential boarding positions except if you purchased a Business Select® fare or added the Companion after you had been assigned a boarding position. For Business Select fares, only the purchaser will receive an A1-A15 boarding position and the Companion will receive a boarding position based on whichever is applicable—time of check-in, A-List or A-List Preferred status, or EarlyBird Check-In®. If you purchased a Wanna Get Away®, Wanna Get Away Plus or an Anytime fare and either you or your Companion is an A-List or A-List Preferred Member, you will both receive reserved boarding positions.

3 Qualifying flights include flights booked and flown through Southwest and flights paid entirely with dollars, Southwest LUV Vouchers, gift cards or travel funds, and with no portion of the purchase price paid for with Rapid Rewards points. Travel is best when it’s shared with those you love. While points and miles are a great way to subsidize your costs when traveling as a pair, another excellent option is taking advantage of a companion certificate offered with many popular co-branded airline credit cards.

In this guide, we outline what credit cards offer companion certificates, how they work, and how you can get great value by using them on your future trips!

If you’re unfamiliar, airline companion certificates are effectively buy one, get one free coupons for an airline. They typically allow you to purchase a ticket and then bring a companion along with you on the same flight for a reduced cost (you’ll usually still need to pay the taxes and fees for the second ticket).

Generally, these companion certificates are either offered as a benefit automatically for holding a certain credit card, earned after you spend a certain amount on a credit card, or earned after you fly a set amount with that airline.

While they might seem fairly straightforward, there are rules and restrictions you’ll want to be aware of when it comes to each companion certificate. With that, let’s jump into what credit cards offer these certificates and how they work.

How To Earn the Southwest Companion Pass

The Southwest Companion Pass is easily the most valuable companion perk we will discuss in this post. However, it is a bit different than the entries thus far, or those that will follow it. This is because the Southwest Companion Pass is not offered an automatic benefit of a Southwest credit card, and while you technically can spend your way to it, that would require significantly more spending than the $20,000 to $30,000 thresholds offered on other cards.

Fortunately, there is a better way.

You see, in order to earn the Southwest Companion Pass, you must earn 135,000 qualifying points in 1 calendar year. But the kicker is that the welcome bonuses from each of the co-branded Southwest credit cards count towards your 135,000 point total.

Given that the welcome bonus on these cards regularly ranges between 40,000 to 100,000 points, you can quickly get close to the goal of 135,000. Here are the cards that we are referring to:

  • 2x points per $1 on local transit and commuting purchases, including ride-share, passenger trains, buses, taxis, tolls, and parking lots and garages
  • Earn 60,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening and an additional 60,000 points when you spend $15,000 in 9 months.

  • Earn 3X points on Southwest Airlines ® purchases.
  • Earn 2X points on Rapid Rewards ® hotel and car rental partners.

As you can see, you have 5 credit card options here. There is just 1 problem — Chase will not allow you to hold multiple personal Southwest cards or multiple business Southwest credit cards. However, you can easily hold 1 personal card and 1 business card.

By receiving the welcome bonus on both a personal Southwest credit card and a business Southwest credit card, most travelers are easily able to earn the 135,000 points needed after meeting the minimum spend requirement and can immediately start putting their new Companion Pass to good use!

Even better, when you have a Southwest credit card, you’ll get a 10,000 point boost to your Companion Pass qualification! Note that these points only count toward Companion Pass and aren’t redeemable Rapid Rewards points.

Southwest Companion Pass Certificate Rules

Why exactly is the Southwest Companion Pass so powerful? Well, unlike other companion certificate perks, instead of being good for one-time use, it is valid for every Southwest flight you take until its expiration date.

You might be wondering, “When does the Companion Pass expire, then?” Your Southwest Companion Pass is valid for the rest of the year in which you qualify for it, and all of the following year.

This means that if you were to qualify for the Companion Pass via Southwest card welcome bonuses at the beginning of the year, you’d then receive your Companion Pass benefits for nearly 2 full years!

Beyond that, it’s not only valid for cash tickets, but also award tickets. That’s right, if you purchase your own ticket with points, you can bring your companion along with no added charge other than the taxes and fees.

Here are the other rules to be aware of with the Southwest Companion Pass:

  • Your Companion Pass is valid for anywhere that Southwest flies, including international destinations.
  • You can only have 1 designated companion, and you can only change your designated companion 3 times in a single year.
  • The main pass holder must be flying on the flight in order for the companion to travel.
  • There is no limit to the number of flights you can take with your companion, and there are no limits regarding multi-city routing, stopovers, or layovers.
  • You do not need to pay for your flight, or any taxes and fees, with a Southwest credit card in order to use your Companion Pass.
  • Your companion will not earn Southwest Rapid Rewards points for their ticket.

While you might be less inclined to pay attention to international airline credit cards and the companion certificates they can offer, you should really think otherwise! Many cards offer some compelling companion benefits that can be especially useful on long-haul routes where the cash prices tend to be quite expensive.

Aer Lingus couple dining economy

Aer Lingus Visa Signature ® Card

Each year that you spend $30,000 on your Aer Lingus card in a calendar year, you’ll receive 1 economy Companion Ticket .

Fortunately, unlike other companion certificates, there is no added fare to the ticket, nor are there any taxes and fees applied to the ticket.

Here are the pertinent rules you’ll want to be aware of:

  • The Companion Ticket will be in the form of a voucher that can be redeemed by a cardmember for an economy companion ticket with a paid economy flight.
  • You’re eligible for only 1 voucher each calendar year.
  • After meeting the $30,000 spend threshold, you’ll receive a voucher email 4 to 6 weeks later and must email Aer Lingus directly at [email protected] to book using the companion voucher.
  • The Companion Ticket is valid for 12 months of the date of issue.
  • You must book the companion voucher on or before 30 days before flying.
  • The primary cardmember must fly with the companion.
  • The voucher may only be used for flights that are operated by Aer Lingus.
  • All travel must originate in and return to the U.S. and is only valid on flights between the U.S. and Ireland.

  • Every calendar year you make purchases of $30,000 on your Aer Lingus Visa Signature Card, you'll receive a Commercial Companion Ticket good for 12 months

British Airways

British Airways First Class 787-9

British Airways Visa Signature ® Card

The British Airways Travel Together Ticket is a fan favorite and requires you to spend $30,000 on the card in a calendar year in order to earn it.

Once you’ve done so, the Travel Together Ticket allows you to bring your companion on your flight when you make an Avios award booking — you just need to pay the carrier taxes and fees.

When it comes to the BA Travel Together Ticket, here are the rules you need to know:

  • The ticket will be in the form of a voucher that can be redeemed by a cardmember for a ticket in the same cabin that the primary cardholder has purchased with their Avios — including first class .
  • You’re eligible for only 1 Companion Ticket each calendar year.
  • After meeting the $30,000 spend threshold, an e-voucher of the Companion Ticket will automatically be to your British Airways Executive Club account 4 to 6 weeks later.
  • The Companion Ticket is valid for 2 years of the date of issue.
  • While the primary ticket must be booked using your Avios, you will still be responsible for the taxes and fees on both tickets.
  • All travel must originate in and return to the U.S.
  • The Companion Ticket can only be used on flights that are operated by British Airways.

British Airways Visa Signature® Card

This card is great for British Airways frequent flyers, and traveling couples will find great value in the Travel Together Ticket.

The British Airways Visa Signature ® Card is a stellar option for travelers who regularly travel with the airline. From all of the Avios the card helps you earn, to a 10% discount off cash tickets, and the award flight statement credits, you can get tons of value out of the card each year.

  • 3x Avios per $1 on British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, and LEVEL purchases
  • 2x Avios per $1 on hotel accommodations purchased directly through hotels
  • 1x Avios per $1 on all other purchases
  • $95 annual fee
  • Earn 3 Avios per $1 spent on purchases with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, and LEVEL.
  • 10% off British Airways flights starting in the US when you book through the website provided in your welcome materials.
  • Every calendar year you make $30,000 in purchases on your British Airways Visa card, you’ll earn a Travel Together Ticket good for two years.
  • Simply tap to pay with your contactless British Airways Visa Signature Card. Just look for the contactless symbol at checkout. It's fast, easy and secure!

British Airways Executive Club

Aside from the Travel Together Ticket and the above-mentioned benefits, the British Airways Visa card offers some solid card perks:

  • Get a $100 credit for economy and premium economy tickets and a $200 credit for business and first class tickets up to 3 times per year (maximum of $600) when you book an award flight to London with British Airways and pay the taxes and fees with your card
  • Travel coverage (baggage delay insurance and lost luggage insurance)

Iberia business class

Iberia Visa Signature ® Card

While it doesn’t offer a proper companion certificate, the Iberia Visa Signature card does offer a discount voucher of $1,000 to use toward 2 tickets on the same flight when you spend $30,000 on your card in a calendar year.

Of course, depending on how you might use another companion certificate, you might just find that you’d get more value out of the $1,000 voucher.

Since you receive what is effectively a cash voucher, and not a certificate, fortunately, there are fewer rules that you have to abide by when it comes to its use.

  • The discount voucher will be in the form of a code that can be applied by the cardmember for a discount of $1,000 when purchasing 2 tickets, for the same flights in the same class of travel, which can be redeemed online at iberia.com/Chase10 .
  • The voucher is valid for 12 months from the date of issue.
  • The voucher may only be used for flights that are operated by Iberia.
  • Each voucher can only be used once, and no residual value will roll over if you don’t use all $1,000 when booking your flights.
  • The voucher can only be used on flights that are operated by Iberia.

Iberia Visa Signature® Card

The Iberia Visa Signature card is a great option for those who travel often with Iberia and its Avios partner airlines.

The Iberia Visa Signature ® Card can be a great option for those who are frequent flyers of the Spanish flag carrier thanks to its combination of benefits and discounts on flight tickets. Plus, your rewards can be redeemed with any of the family of Avios partners including Aer Lingus, British Airways, and Qatar Airways.

  • 3x Avios per $1 on Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, and LEVEL flight purchases
  • 2x Avios per $1 on hotel accommodations booked directly with the hotel
  • Earn 3 Avios per $1 spent on purchases with Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, and LEVEL.
  • Save 10% on Iberia flights purchased on iberia.com/Chase10
  • Earn a discount voucher of $1,000 to use toward two tickets on the same flight for each calendar year you make purchases of $30,000 on your card

The Iberia Visa Signature card also includes travel coverage (baggage delay insurance and lost luggage insurance).

  • Your certificate is valid for 12 months from its issue date.

Virgin Atlantic

The Booth A350

Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard ®

In order to earn the companion certificate with the Virgin Atlantic World Elite card, you’ll need to spend $25,000 on the card in your cardmember year.

The companion certificate on the Virgin Atlantic World Elite card is unique in that the level of value you can get from it is tied to your Flying Club elite status within the program at the time of booking.

Red Tier members may book a primary ticket in Economy Classic or Premium and receive 1 matching Economy Classic or Premium Companion Fare ticket. Red Tier members can also book a Companion Fare into Upper Class at a 50% points discount. However, those who are Silver Tier or Gold Tier can book a matching Companion Fare into any cabin class .

The other terms you’ll want to know prior to booking are:

  • You’ll still be responsible for any applicable taxes, fees, charges, and carrier-imposed surcharges for the Companion Fare.
  • Both travelers must be on the same flights and travel itinerary.
  • Flights and routes are subject to availability.
  • Your ticket must be purchased directly through Virgin Atlantic.
  • Your companion certificate must be used within 2 years of its issue date.

Cardholders of the Virgin Atlantic World Elite card also enjoy these benefits:

  • 3x points per $1 on Virgin Atlantic purchases, and 1.5x points per $1 on all other purchases
  • 25 tier points towards Virgin Atlantic status per $2,500 in purchases (maximum 50 per month)
  • 7,5000 bonus points each year that you spend $15,000 on your card, and a further 7,500 bonus points after you spend $25,000

Overall, deciding which companion certificate might be best for you will largely come down to your travel goals, the level of spending you can put on a given card, and what other card benefits you’re looking for.

As you can see, while they can vary quite a bit from card to card, companion certificates can be very valuable. Not only do they enhance the overall value of your airline credit card , but they also make for a very compelling option for traveling couples.

travel companion pass

The Air Canada Annual Worldwide Companion Pass is granted upon meeting a certain spending threshold on the premium Aeroplan credit cards .

In this article, let’s take a look at how the Annual Worldwide Companion Pass works and how to redeem it for maximum value along your travels.

Annual Worldwide Companion Pass: The Rules

In this article, we’ll refer to the Annual Worldwide Companion Pass as simply the “Companion Pass” for short.

The Companion Pass allows a second passenger to travel on a discounted base fare when the first passenger pays full price for an Air Canada economy class ticket to anywhere in the world.

The following rules govern its use:

  • Canada or the United States (excluding Hawaii): $99 (all figures in CAD)  base fare
  • Hawaii, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean: $299  base fare
  • South America, Europe, Middle East, and Africa: $499  base fare
  • Asia, Australia, and New Zealand: $599  base fare
  • It can be redeemed on one-way or round-trip flights (although there is no residual value if used on a one-way flight).
  • It can be redeemed on an Economy Standard, Flex, Comfort, or Latitude fare.
  • It must be redeemed on flights marketed and operated by Air Canada only, and cannot be used on codeshare flights or itineraries involving partner airlines.
  • It must be redeemed on revenue fares only, and cannot be used in conjunction with an Aeroplan award.
  • There are no blackout dates or other usage restrictions; the Companion Pass can be redeemed on any Air Canada flights on any date of the year.
  • It will be deposited into your Aeroplan account up to 10 weeks after your cardholder renewal date (more on this below), and it will have a one-year validity period from that date.
  • During the validity period, the Companion Pass can be used to book flights over the upcoming one-year period, meaning that a Companion Pass can effectively be used to book travel within a two-year period from the day it’s earned.

The Annual Worldwide Companion Pass must be redeemed in its original form for a set of Air Canada flights with at least two passengers on the booking within the validity period, or you’ll lose it.

Which Credit Cards Offer the Annual Worldwide Companion Pass?

The Companion Pass is offered as a threshold benefit upon spending $25,000 in a membership year on one of the four Aeroplan premium credit cards:†

  • TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card
  • CIBC Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card
  • American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card
  • American Express Aeroplan Business Reserve Card

As noted above, the Companion Pass gets deposited into your Aeroplan account “up to 10 weeks following the card account year”,† which means that you may need to pay a second year’s annual fee before receiving the Companion Pass in the “Benefits” section of your Aeroplan account.

However, there have been reports from some Aeroplan premium cardholders who have had the Companion Pass deposited into their accounts soon after they reach the $25,000 spending threshold.

Among the three issuers, American Express is the only one that provides a progress tracker in the monthly statements for your $25,000 spending threshold. With the cards issued by TD and CIBC , you’ll have to keep track on your own.

Maximizing the Annual Worldwide Companion Pass

The logic behind maximizing the Annual Worldwide Companion Pass is the same as any other companion voucher-style product: the more the first passenger pays, the more savings the second passenger gets.

The value proposition increases proportionally to your willingness to spend. From a user’s perspective, these types of offerings can be very useful if you’re willing or required to spend a fair bit of cash on flights in the first place.

On the other hand, the upside is more limited if you’re looking to minimize your out-of-pocket spending and get as much as you can for “free”.

That’s especially because you’re still on the hook for taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges that may comprise a significant chunk of an economy ticket.

Still, if you’ve earned a Companion Pass, you may as well give some thought as to how to extract maximum value from it rather than letting it expire unused. Let’s take a look at some of your options.

Travel in Peak Season or Last-Minute

When travelling during off-season, fares will often be cheap enough that redeeming the Companion Pass makes very little sense.

For example, consider this off-season, round-trip fare from Toronto to Dublin, whose base fare is $315 on Economy (Standard). In this case, you’d be wasting your Companion Pass because the base fare of $315 is lower than the $499 flat-rate base fare you’re supposed to pay.

travel companion pass

In other words, you’d actually wind up paying more by using a Companion Pass in this example.

On the other hand, fares tend to skyrocket if you’re travelling during peak season or on a last-minute basis. Again, the more the first passenger pays, the more the second passenger saves.

While you’d never choose to pay more than you need to, if you simply must travel (as tends to be the case for those who do travel during peak season or who embark on last-minute trips), the Companion Pass could save you a good chunk on the second passenger’s fare.

Take, for example, a teacher who plans vacations around the school year. If they want to maximize their time away, they’d often end up paying very high cash fares.

In the example below, a round-trip base fare from Toronto to Mexico City during the winter holidays is $1,405, but the second passenger would pay only $299 plus taxes and surcharges with a Companion Pass, thus saving the household $1,106 .

travel companion pass

Or consider a Toronto-based couple who needs to travel to Amsterdam this coming weekend for a family emergency. Since only Economy (Flex) fares are available, the round-trip base fare is $ 1,485.

travel companion pass

Applying the Companion Pass, the second passenger would only pay $499 plus taxes and surcharges, saving $986  on this unexpected expense.

Indeed, if you don’t have any better uses for your Companion Pass, then keeping it around for some big savings in case of unexpected last-minute trips can be a solid backup strategy.

Which Region Is the Best Value?

You’ll notice that different parts of the world come with different base fares under the Companion Pass.

We can ask the question of which region might be most valuable for redeeming the Companion Pass by taking a rough estimate of Air Canada fares around the world and comparing them to the discounted base fares.

First off, for Canada and the US, you can easily find something that would exceed the $99 round-trip base fare of the Companion Pass, especially for longer, transcontinental flights.

For example, a round-trip base fare for a transcontinental Toronto–Los Angeles flight is typically around $200–300.

But often, especially for competitive routes served by ultra-low-cost carriers, the round-trip base fare ends up being too low for a Companion Pass to result to substantial savings.

travel companion pass

For Central America and the Caribbean, Air Canada’s round-trip base fares from its major hubs tend to fall in the vicinity of $400–700 during non-peak times.

Compared to a discounted base fare of $299, your savings might land in the region of $100–400. That’s not insignificant, but the savings might be more meaningful with long-haul flights.

travel companion pass

Looking at South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, base fares to these regions tend to price out at around $900–1,100  during non-peak times.

Compared to a discounted base fare of $499 (CAD), you’d save about $400–600  depending on the exact flight.

travel companion pass

Finally, with the sheer size of Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, there tends to be much greater variance in terms of the average fares to different destinations.

Vancouver–Seoul can be booked for as little as $1,000 all-in, meaning that your $599 discounted base fare wouldn’t be discounted by all that much.

Meanwhile, Toronto–Delhi regularly sells for $1,500–1,900 round-trip, making it an excellent use of the Companion Pass that can unlock $1,000+  in value without even applying any of the more advanced strategies.

travel companion pass

On paper, the Asia, Australia, and New Zealand region unlocks the greatest value for the Annual Worldwide Companion Pass, even though its base fare is the highest – and that’s very much in keeping with the nature of the product itself.

Book Higher Fare Categories

With the above exercise, we’ve taken into account the cheapest fare categories in economy class to each destination.

However, since the Companion Pass can be redeemed for any economy class flight, it would fetch higher value if you’re in the habit of booking Economy (Flex) or Economy (Comfort) fares – perhaps for Aeroplan Elite Status considerations.

After all, Economy (Flex), Economy (Comfort), and Economy (Latitude) fares earn significantly more Status Qualifying Miles (SQM) and Status Qualifying Segments (SQS) compared to Economy (Basic) and Economy (Standard) fares (100%+ of the distance flown vs. 25% or 50%).

travel companion pass

If, say, both you and your spouse are looking to climb the status ranks, a Companion Pass can help you save a good chunk on the Economy (Flex) or higher fares, reducing the out-of-pocket spend required to earn status.

Even if you’re a solo flyer who books Economy (Flex) fares or higher for status purposes, you could team up with a fellow Aeroplan Elite Status member on an end-of-year mileage run to Europe or Asia, while splitting the savings that you get from the Companion Pass.

However, keep in mind that these strategies would be most useful if you’re pursuing SQM/SQS more than Status Qualifying Dollars (SQD), since the Companion Pass will naturally reduce the SQD earned by the second passenger.

Use eUpgrades for Premium Economy or Business Class

That brings us to the final way to boost your value from the Companion Pass: use the voucher to book two Economy (Latitude) fares at a heavily discounted rate for the second passenger, and then apply Air Canada eUpgrades to fly in premium economy or business class instead.

Consider a couple who wants to fly business class from Montreal to London. The cheapest business class fare clocks in at $6,384 round-trip, so it would be $12,768 (CAD) for two passengers.

Let’s imagine both travellers have earned Aeroplan 25K status, and therefore hold 25 eUpgrade credits in each of their accounts.

That gives them enough eUpgrades to confirm an instant upgrade from Economy (Latitude) to business class on both legs of their journey (assuming there’s eUpgrade availability on both flights), which would cost 11 eUpgrade credits per person per direction based on the eUpgrades chart.

The Economy (Latitude) fare is $3,730. When applying the Companion Pass, the first passenger would pay this fare in full, whereas the second passenger would pay a $499 discounted base fare plus $909 in taxes and fees.

The total all-in pricing for both passengers is $3,730 + $499 + $909 = $5,138, allowing them to save a whopping $7,630  on their round-trip business class flights.

Again, we’re back to the central principle: the Companion Pass will be a lot more useful for those who are willing to spend some cash in pursuit of elevated travel, rather than those who are looking to keep their expenses to a bare minimum.

What’s the Value of the Annual Worldwide Companion Pass?

With the above in mind, can we pin down a valuation for the Annual Worldwide Companion Pass? On average, across all use cases, how much is this benefit worth?

While it’s always a fun thought exercise to nail down a specific valuation, it’s a much more meaningful to consider two valuations depending on the type of traveller: those who wouldn’t be averse to paying a few thousand dollars for the comfort and convenience of Air Canada business class flights, and those who’d scoff at the idea and gladly fly in economy instead.

In the former case, the possibility of applying eUpgrades to an Economy (Latitude) booking can unlock significant value as outlined above.

Given the dollar savings against purchasing a business class fare directly, as well as the flexibility to save Aeroplan points for future trips by using a Companion Pass to outperform a “Latitude Attitude” points booking, it’s fair to peg the fair value of the Companion Pass at a minimum of $1,000 (CAD).

travel companion pass

For the latter type of traveller, the thought of parting ways with a few grand in cash for business class flights just doesn’t sit right. They’d rather follow a defined strategy of using points for business class and paying cash for economy.

In this case, a fair value for the Companion Pass might fall somewhere in the region of $500 (CAD). As we saw, any long-haul flight outside of North America can realistically unlock this valuation, while flights to Air Canada’s most distant destinations can easily achieve higher value.

With these two valuations in mind, we’re looking at a rough Return on Spend of either 4% or 2% on the $25,000 spending needed to earn the Companion Pass in the first place.

If you’re the type of traveller who isn’t averse to paying for a business class flight here and there, and who engages with Aeroplan enough to earn eUpgrades through elite status, you’ll get much more out of the Companion Pass than someone who’s purely treating it as an incremental benefit.

And since this is a threshold reward on the premium Aeroplan credit cards after all, that’s probably the way the Companion Pass was intended to be.

The Air Canada Annual Worldwide Companion Pass provides another avenue towards expanding your travel possibilities, allowing you to book a second passenger for a fixed based fare when you pay full price for the first passenger.

In general, the more you spend on Air Canada cash fares, the more benefit you’ll get out of the Annual Worldwide Companion Pass. If you have eUpgrades at your disposal, you can also use it to unlock a pathway towards discounted business class tickets as a duo.

The benefit is cleverly designed to reward high-end travellers and Aeroplan Elite Status members with the greatest value, and in that respect, it’s very much a fitting spend-based perk on the premium Aeroplan credit cards.

Key takeaways

  • Several airline credit cards offer discounts on tickets for your traveling companions.
  • Available discounts range from flat-rate fares to fully comped tickets (minus taxes and fees).
  • Take note of your card’s eligibility requirements so you can maximize your companion discount benefits.

If you often travel with friends or family , scoring a discount for your flight companion can make booking much more affordable. Fortunately, some airline credit cards offer companion passes and discounts as benefits.

They go by a variety of names: companion pass, companion certificate, companion fare, companion ticket and more. And although most airlines offer a discount only for you and your travel buddy, there are ways to earn fully comped tickets.

Curious as to which airlines and cards offer the most help when it comes to cutting down on companion travel costs? Here’s a rundown of some of the best companion pass offers today.

Southwest Airlines Companion Pass

Southwest’s Companion Pass is quite possibly the most popular on the market — and can save you a ton of cash. For just taxes and fees (roughly $6 per one-way ticket), you can bring a companion with you on any trip for the duration of your pass, which extends through the end of the year you earn it, plus a full calendar year after.

By timing your Companion Pass status wisely, you can have up to two full years of nearly-free companion travel. But you will want to plan ahead to make sure you take full advantage of the benefit.

The best part? There’s no limit on the number of times you can use the pass. After you’ve earned it, you can use it each time you book a flight with Southwest. You should see an option to add a companion to your flight for no additional ticket charge after you purchase your ticket.

How to earn the Companion Pass

There are two ways to qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass:

  • Completing 100 qualifying one-way Southwest flights within a year
  • Earning 135,000 qualifying points through Southwest Rapid Rewards

Points earned through Rapid Rewards will count toward the pass, but any points that are purchased, transferred or converted from another loyalty program will not apply. Using a Southwest co-branded credit card is a great way to maximize your spending toward a companion pass, if that’s your goal. Here are a few to consider:

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card *
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card

American Airlines Companion Certificate

For frequent American Airlines flyers, American Airlines AAdvantage credit cards give you a few companion certificate options.

American’s companion certificate allows you to bring along a guest on one round-trip main cabin domestic ticket for $99 (plus taxes and fees).

The certificate expires after a year and is only valid for flights within the continental United States. And make sure you read the offer carefully; some details can vary depending on the card you use.

How to earn the companion certificate

There are a few different credit cards you can use to earn a companion certificate with American Airlines.

With the following cards, you can earn the certificate for one companion after you spend $30,000 or more in a year and keep your account open for 45 days beyond your card anniversary:

  • CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® *
  • AAdvantage® Aviator® World Elite Business Mastercard®*

You can also earn a certificate with the cards below when you spend at least $20,000 annually and your account remains open for 45 days following your anniversary date.

  • AAdvantage® Aviator® Silver Mastercard®* (with this card, you’ll earn a companion certificate for two guests at $99 each, plus taxes and fees)
  • AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard® *

When you meet the qualifications, American Airlines will send you a companion certificate with specific booking details.

British Airways Travel Together

British Airways offers its own version of companion passes, called Travel Together Tickets.

This British Airways offer is available when you book reward flights with the Avios you earn. With the ticket, you’ll receive a second seat (of equal value) to bring a friend along on a future trip — paying only taxes, fees and carrier charges. Alternatively, you can use the ticket to pay just 50% of your British Airways Avios value when you book a reward flight without a companion.

The offer is for British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus reward flights that originate from anywhere; you’re not limited to flights originating from the U.S. You should also be aware that taxes, fees and carrier charges on international flights can often exceed $1,000, so the Travel Together offer certainly varies in value.

How to earn the Travel Together Ticket

Using a British Airways Visa Signature® Card *, you can qualify for the companion ticket by spending $30,000 in a single calendar year (Jan. 1 through Dec. 31).

After qualifying for the ticket, it is good for two full years.

Delta Air Lines companion certificate

Delta’s co-branded Delta SkyMiles credit cards offer a few different options for earning its companion certificate.

The certificate allows you to bring along a travel buddy on a single eligible round trip domestic flight. You are still responsible for paying taxes and fees, but these charges are capped at $80 ($250 for international flights).

If you’re an eligible Delta cardholder, you’ll receive a companion certificate each year of membership upon the renewal of your card. There are currently four eligible cards:

  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card (main cabin only)
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card (main cabin only)
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card (first-class eligible)
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card (first-class eligible)

You won’t receive a certificate until you renew your card membership, so it’ll take waiting until your second year to reap the benefit. Once you’ve been awarded the certificate, you have until your next renewal date to take advantage.

Hawaiian Airlines companion discount

As a Hawaiian Airlines cardholder, you can earn one-time or annual companion discounts on flights with the airline.

Each of the eligible cards offers a one-time 50% discount on a single roundtrip coach fare ticket for a companion flying with you. But two of the cards also offer an annual $100 discount off a companion’s roundtrip coach fare ticket. These discounts apply to travel between Hawaii and North America booked directly with the airline.

The one-time 50 percent discount is eligible for 13 months after opening your account and annual $100 discounts are good for 12 months after each anniversary. Unfortunately, the 50% off doesn’t apply to taxes, fees or surcharges.

How to earn the companion discount

Here are the exact discount offers from each eligible Hawaiian Airlines credit card:

  • The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® * (one-time 50% off and $100 yearly companion discount)
  • Hawaiian Airlines® Bank of Hawaii World Elite Mastercard®* (one-time 50% off and $100 yearly companion discount)
  • Hawaiian Airlines® Business Mastercard®* (one-time 50% off companion discount)

Alaska Airlines Famous Companion Fare

Eligible Alaska Airlines cardholders can earn the airline’s companion fare after meeting certain requirements.

The companion fare offer is good toward one round-trip coach companion fare. You’ll still pay a $99 base fare, plus taxes and fees (starting at $23), and the companion fare must be on the same itinerary and same booking as your purchased ticket.

How to earn the companion fare

When you apply for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card , you could be eligible for the following offer: Get a $0 Companion Fare (plus taxes and fees from $23) and 50,000 bonus miles after qualifying purchases made with the Alaska Airlines Visa® card. To qualify, make $3,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account. The card has a $95 annual fee.

You can also qualify with the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business card *, which has a welcome offer of 50,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 in your first 90 days, plus Companion Fare from $122 ($99 fare plus taxes and fees from $23).

After you earn the welcome bonuses on these cards, you can keep earning the companion fare discount code by spending at least $6,000 on your card each year.

Lufthansa companion ticket

With Lufthansa’s co-branded rewards card, you can get one companion ticket each year.

These tickets are eligible for economy class bookings departing from the U.S. to eligible international destinations. You’ll still have to pay taxes and fees, but you’ll be gifted a fully covered ticket each year you hold your card membership.

To reserve a seat with your companion ticket, you’ll have to call the Miles & More Companion Ticket Service at 866-461-5399.

How to earn the companion ticket

You’ll need to be a Miles & More® World Elite Mastercard® * cardholder to score Lufthansa’s companion ticket.

When you sign up for the card, you’ll be gifted your initial companion ticket after you complete your first purchase. Afterward, you’ll receive an additional companion ticket on each account anniversary if you hold your membership.

Lufthansa’s companion offers are good from the date they’re issued until your next account anniversary.

The bottom line

Whether you’re a frequent flyer or a once-in-a-while traveler, your pocket will feel a little heavier when you’re able to bring company along at a fraction of the cost.

While each airline offers ways to save when traveling with friends or family, you can really maximize your savings by planning ahead and taking full advantage of your preferred airline’s deals.

Free flights in 2025? Southwest Airlines' flash promo offers Companion Pass

Portrait of Kathleen Wong

Southwest Airlines ' sought-after Companion Pass is back, but only for a short period of time.

The U.S. carrier is running a flash promotion offering members of its frequent flyer Rapid Rewards program a two-month Companion Pass when they purchase or redeem points for one round-trip or two one-way flights from now until 11:59 p.m. CST on Thursday, Sept. 5. The flight must be completed before Nov. 20.

With the Companion Pass, the member can designate one person to travel with them for free on unlimited flights between Jan. 6 and March 6, 2025. Travelers do have to pay taxes and fees, which start at $5.60 one way.

It's an end of an era: Southwest Airlines is getting rid of its open seating policy

"We love offering this Companion Pass promotion because it allows our Members to experience one of the many benefits of our award-winning Rapid Rewards program," said  Jennifer Bridie , vice president of marketing at Southwest Airlines, in a statement.

While Companion Passes are typically reserved for elite Rapid Rewards status, they will be available to any member through this promotion. The last time Southwest offered the pass to members was in May for qualifying flights to Hawaii.

Southwest Airlines Rewards Travelers With The Return Of Companion Pass

Southwest’s Companion Pass is an irresistible promotion for Rapid Rewards members. Here is what travelers should know about the deal.

Sarah Rand • Sep 10, 2024

Southwest Airlines airplane in the sky.

Southwest Airlines recently made several  exciting announcements  that will benefit travelers. Among the  airline’s latest enhancements  is the return of one of its most sought-after promotions: the Companion Pass. Travelers are celebrating as  the promotion  is renewed, allowing them to bring a companion on their next trip. Here’s what we know about the promotion:

Southwest’s Companion Pass

travel companion pass

In a press release on September 3, 2024, Southwest announced the return of its limited-time Companion Pass promotion. This highly coveted pass offers Rapid Rewards members an extra perk. The Rapid Rewards program already allows members to earn reward flights with no blackout dates and no expiration for points, giving travelers flexibility in redeeming them. The reintroduction of the Companion Pass takes this perk a step further.

The Companion Pass has become one of the most desirable travel benefits. It allows travelers to bring a companion on Southwest flights at minimal cost. This perk applies to all flights for an entire year without requiring the purchase of a second full-price ticket. However, due to the value of the pass, it is not easy to obtain.

Things To Know

One of the key requirements for Southwest’s Companion Pass is membership in the airline’s loyalty program. Members must either fly 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year or earn 135,000 points in the same period. For the first time, members can use Rapid Rewards points, a combination of points and cash, or other forms of payment to book flights that count toward the promotion.

How To Access The Companion Pass

Rapid Rewards members must first register for the promotion on Southwest’s website. After registering, they must book a qualifying flight between September 3 and September 5, 2024 (the promotion period). The travel for this booking must occur between September 3 and November 20, 2024 (the travel period) to meet the promotion’s terms.

Once eligible, travelers will earn a promotional Companion Pass. They will be notified via email within 10 days of flying. Once the pass is awarded to their account on January 6, 2025, they can designate a companion. Companions can fly for free, excluding taxes and fees starting at $5.60, between January 6 and March 6, 2025. Travelers can change their designated companion up to three times per calendar year. A major benefit of the pass is that if travelers earn the Companion Pass in 2024, it will remain valid through December 2025.

Traveler Tip:  If travelers miss this promotion, they can look out for the next opportunity. For more information, visit Southwest’s promotion website.

Southwest Is Making It Easier to Score a Companion Pass for 2024 — Here’s How

Travelers can now earn double qualifying points towards the pass and more.

travel companion pass

Southwest Airlines is making it easier to earn one of the carrier’s sought-after Companion Passes for next year by making rewards worth more.

Travelers who fly through Nov. 30 will now earn double Companion Pass qualifying points on their flights, according to the airline . Business travelers who book through the airline’s business channels will earn triple qualifying points during the same period.

To earn the bonus points, passengers must be enrolled in Southwest’s Rapid Rewards program (which is free to join) and register online .

In addition, Southwest will allow registered travelers to count flights purchased with Rapid Rewards points toward a Companion Pass. As part of the promotion, the airline will count each flight booked with points as a qualifying flight toward the total needed when travelers fly through Nov. 30.

And travelers who have a Rapid Rewards credit card from Chase will earn double Companion Pass qualifying points for each $1 spent through Nov. 30. Card holders must also register for the promotion online.

"We want our Customers to feel valued and appreciated for flying with Southwest," Jonathan Clarkson, the vice president of marketing at Southwest Airlines, said in a statement. "Whether it's flying with us on a purchased ticket, or on a reward booking, or simply by using one of our industry-leading Rapid Rewards Credit Cards from Chase, Members now have new opportunities to accelerate their way to the highly coveted Companion Pass before the end of the year so they can start planning their 2024 travel."

The Companion Pass allows holders to designate one companion to fly with them practically for free . Companions must simply pay taxes and fees, which start at $5.60 each way.

To earn a pass, customers must either fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 135,000 qualifying points in a calendar year. Travelers can earn points through everything from using a qualifying credit card to staying at partner hotels, and more.

The decision to make it easier to earn a pass comes on the heels of Southwest’s move to allow all passengers to fly same-day standby for free , bringing the carrier in line with other major airlines in the United States.

Act fast: Earn the Southwest Companion Pass by booking just 1 round-trip flight

Rachel Craft

Southwest's Companion Pass , which allows you to bring a friend for nearly free (you have to pay the taxes and fees) on unlimited flights, is one of the most valuable assets in the world of points and miles. It typically takes a lot of Southwest flights and/or credit card spending to nab one of these coveted passes — but sometimes the airline runs flash promotions that let you earn a Companion Pass much faster .

From now until Thursday, you can earn a two-month promotional Companion Pass by booking a single round-trip flight. Here's how:

  • Register here , then purchase one round-trip or two one-way flights by Sept. 5.
  • You must travel by Nov. 20.
  • You'll earn a promotional Companion Pass valid from Jan. 6 to March 6, 2025.

travel companion pass

Normally, earning a Companion Pass takes quite a bit more flying and/or credit card spending. You must earn 135,000 qualifying points or fly 100 qualifying flights within a calendar year, which will give you a Companion Pass for the remainder of the qualification year and the next calendar year.

However, sometimes Southwest runs promotions to let members earn a Companion Pass for a shorter time period by completing much easier tasks — like flying to Hawaii or earning a credit card welcome bonus .

The current promotion is similar to others we've seen in the past, with one key difference. Typically, eligible flights must be paid at least partially with cash to earn a promotional Companion Pass. But in this promotion, flights booked solely with Rapid Rewards points are also eligible. According to the promotion terms and conditions: "Reward travel and Cash + Points bookings qualify for this promotional offer."

So you can earn a valuable Companion Pass whether you pay with cash, points or a combination of the two (although Cash + Points isn't usually the best route for booking Southwest flights).

Southwest's Companion Pass is almost legendary in the world of points and miles. It allows you to bring an additional guest for free (plus taxes and fees), effectively cutting your flight costs in half. Whether you book your ticket with cash, points or both, all your companion has to pay are the taxes and fees (starting at $5.60 one-way).

travel companion pass

The one catch of the Companion Pass is that you can't bring just anyone along each time you fly; you must designate a companion in your Rapid Rewards account. However, Southwest is still pretty flexible on this. You're allowed to change your designated companion up to three times per year, and this rule applies to promotional passes as well: "Members may change their designated Companion up to three times while they have the promotional Companion Pass."

If you haven't finalized your fall travel yet, consider booking it with Southwest. You could snag a valuable Companion Pass to use next January and February — perhaps for an epic ski trip or romantic Valentine's Day getaway .

Update: Southwest Airlines announced in July several upcoming changes to its boarding system, seat assignments and cabin configuration. Red-eye flights are also now bookable on certain routes. Read more of the news here .

The Southwest Companion Pass is a much-coveted perk among Southwest loyalists and air travel aficionados.

That's because owning the pass is akin to getting a buy-one-get-one deal on your Southwest flight: Every time you buy a flight or redeem points for a free flight, you can choose a companion to fly with you for free — or at least for only the cost of taxes and fees (more on that later).

Enjoying a Companion Pass is easy, but earning it can be a challenge. Here's everything you need to know, including how to use Southwest's credit cards to help fast-track you to such a pass.

What is a Southwest Airlines Companion Pass?

The Companion Pass is a sought-after highlight of the Southwest Rapid Rewards program because it's among the most valuable benefits of its kind. It allows you to pick one person to fly with you without paying any airline charges for your travel companion, aside from mandatory taxes and fees, which start at $5.60 one-way.

To qualify for a traditional Companion Pass, you'll need to do one of the following:

Fly 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year, or;

Earn 135,000 Rapid Rewards points in a calendar year. Qualifying points include those that you earn through revenue flights booked via Southwest; those that you earn on Southwest credit cards; and base points you earn from Rapid Rewards partners.

If you meet either of those criteria, you'll earn the Companion Pass for the rest of the year in which you qualified and the following calendar year. So if you earn the Companion Pass in, say, July 2023, it will be valid through the end of December 2024. You'll need to re-qualify every year to hold on to your status.

If you can time it so you qualify for the pass in January, you'll essentially be getting two-for-one tickets for nearly two years. That could add up to some serious savings.

How to get a Companion Pass faster

Unless you travel every week on a Southwest flight, it's probably more feasible to earn 135,000 Rapid Rewards points to get you to that coveted pass status.

The quickest way to amass a pile of points has been by earning the sign-up bonus on at least one of the three Southwest consumer credit cards:

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card

Although these three cards' annual fees, rewards and perks may vary, they all have the same sign-up bonus, which occasionally includes access to a Companion Pass. The current offer: Earn 50,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card

on Chase's website

Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card

There are also two business credit cards:

The Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card , which has the following sign-up bonus: Earn 60,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening and an additional 60,000 points when you spend $15,000 in 9 months.

The Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card , which has the following sign-up bonus: Earn 80,000 points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening and an additional 40,000 points when you spend $15,000 in 9 months.

Ongoing rewards and sign-up bonuses all count toward a traditional Companion Pass, as do the annual anniversary points you get with each card.

» Learn more: Can you have 2 Southwest credit cards?

As of Jan. 1, 2023, you’ll need to earn 135,000 qualifying points in a calendar year in order to get your hands on a Companion Pass (previously 125,000). But all Rapid Rewards credit card members will receive a boost of 10,000 Companion Pass-qualifying points every year

Here are the best strategies for earning Rapid Rewards points:

Get a Southwest Airlines credit card and earn the sign-up bonus: This can get you well on your way to that 135,000-point goal.

Fly Southwest and use your Southwest card to pay for the tickets: The Southwest cards all earn 2 points per $1 spent on Southwest flights, so a $100 flight will earn you 200 points.

Book a hotel stay or rental car with a Rapid Rewards partner and pay with your card. This includes recognizable names like Hyatt, Marriott, Hertz and Budget.

Shop online through Southwest's bonus mall: Spending money through Rapid Rewards Shopping partners can net you extra points for your regular spending.

Become a Rapid Rewards Dining member: When you dine at participating restaurants and pay with your enrolled card, you can earn more qualifying points.

What not to do

It's understandable to want to earn a Companion Pass as quickly as possible. Just note that these "shortcuts" won't work:

Don't transfer points from another card: Some rewards cards, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , will let you transfer the points you earn on them into your Rapid Rewards account. But transferred points are not Companion Pass-eligible.

Don't try to buy your way to a Companion Pass: Points that you purchase directly won't count, nor will points transferred between members, or converted from hotel and car loyalty programs.

Don't run afoul of Chase's "One Southwest Card" rule : If you already have a Southwest consumer card, you likely will not be eligible for another. Similarly, if you've already earned a sign-up bonus from a Southwest consumer card within the past 24 months, you likely cannot qualify for a different consumer card.

Don't forget about Chase's 5/24 rule , which has to do with how many sign-up bonuses a cardholder can snag in a two-year period. The "One Southwest Card" rule doesn't apply to Southwest business cards, so you could potentially apply for, say, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card and the Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card . But depending on your situation, if you’ve recently applied for several other cards in addition to those two, you still may be denied.
