Steve flesch sets course record, wins 2023 ascension charity classic on pga tour champions, share this article.

champions tour ascension

Steve Flesch is back in victory lane, having routed the field at the 2023 Ascension Charity Classic with a tournament-best 62 on Sunday.

Despite shooting a pair of 66s in the first two rounds, he started the final day two shots back of the lead at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis but he quickly made a move, opening birdie-eagle-birdie-par-birdie-birdie.

After three more birdies on the back nine, the lefty signed for 9-under round and earned his fourth PGA Tour Champions at 19 under. The 62 also ties Flesch’s career low round. He played the last 35 holes of the 54-hole tournament bogey free. His son Griffin was on the bag this week.

Flesch had three straight top-10s in late May/June this season then had a pair of WDs. He was T-58, T-33 and T-36 in his last three outings but definitely found the magic this week.

Kevin Sutherland and Y.E.Yang tied the then-course record with 64s in the first round while Colin Montgomerie and Bretty Quigley each had 64s in the second round. Montgomerie’s round was punctuated by his first Champions tour hole-in-one.

Champions Golf Event Promises to Provide a Boost for North County

By Stu Durando, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The initial pitch for St. Louis to host a tournament on the PGA Tour Champions was made with a stipulation, and it was important enough that organizers weren’t willing to bend.

The event was to be held at Norwood Hills Country Club or it wouldn’t be held.

Although busy through the years, the facility has not hosted a major professional tournament since 1973. But the selection of Norwood Hills, which is in Jennings, was about more than golf.

It was about bringing a charity event to north St. Louis County and pumping money into organizations and the community.

“Creating this was really contingent upon holding it in North County,” said Nick Ragone, executive vice president for Ascension. “That was the one condition we had as we started discussions. The tour came out and took a look and understood the vision.”

CONVERSATION WITH GOLF’S GREATS SHINES BRIGHT LIGHT ON DAY OF GIVING FOR THE ASCENSION CHARITY CLASSIC PRESENTED BY EMERSON

Tournament donates $225,000 in support of north st. louis county communities and ascension charity classic charities.

ST. LOUIS – The Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson yesterday officially kicked off its countdown to the inaugural tournament, that will now be contested September 6¾12, 2021, by hosting a round of golf at the tournament’s host venue, Norwood Hills Golf and Country Club, and a special virtual conversation with golf legends, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Hale Irwin, moderated by PGA TOUR Champions professional and Ascension Ambassador Billy Andrade. The exclusive chat was also available for select guests via a virtual livestream option. “It is such a privilege to be a part of an event that is positively impacting St. Louis and north county in my home state of Missouri,” said Tom Watson. “I’m excited to see professional golf return to a region that is filled with passionate, dedicated fans with a history of charity giving and community engagement.” During the day of celebration, the Ascension Charity Classic announced a $225,000 donation in support of North St. Louis County communities, with $75,000 given to each of the tournament’s three primary beneficiaries, Marygrove, a residential treatment and support facility for children and teens struggling with debilitating emotional and behavioral issues resulting from abuse, neglect and other trauma; the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis; and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis. “While we’re disappointed that we had to postpone the inaugural Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson, we’re delighted that we were still able to deliver charitable donations to our three primary beneficiaries,” said Nick Ragone, Ascension Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer.  “The St. Louis community has rallied around this event and understands the impact it will have on north county for years to come. We’re already planning for a spectacular inaugural event in September of 2021!”

The inaugural Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson rescheduled for 2021 due to health concerns related to COVID-19

Revitalization of north st. louis county communities and support of tournament charities remain focus this year.

ST. LOUIS – The PGA TOUR Champions and Ascension announced today that the 2020 Ascension Charity Classic presented by Emerson and associated events scheduled for September 28 – October 4 will be canceled this year due to the on-going health crisis related to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of continued concerns and the serious impact of the COVID-19 virus throughout the country and specifically within St. Louis and St. Louis County, tournament organizers have made the decision to move the inaugural event to 2021. Tournament officials have worked closely with the St. Louis County health department and local officials throughout this pandemic to continuously monitor and assess the situation. “It’s not what any of us wanted, but the PGA TOUR and Ascension made the right decision for our region,” said Winston Calvert, Chief of Staff to St. Louis County Executive Sam Page.
