Scene from The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal by Mike Downie (Photo courtesy of TIFF)

The Toronto International Film Festival 2024 edition lets music fans indulge two passions at once. With an interesting selection of documentaries, musicals, and others, there are multiple ways to delve into music via film.

LvT will be taking a closer look at several films and filmmakers at this year’s Festival, including a documentary about Andrea Bocelli, and a fictional story that delves into a forgotten figure in Canadian classical music history.

Here’s a brief look at some of the variety that’s on offer at TIFF, taking place between September 5 and 15, 2024.

TIFF Documentaries

The tragically hip: no dress rehearsal (mike downie) world premiere.

Producer-director Mike Downie is brother to the late Gordon Downie, leader of the band from Kingston, Ontario that came to reach iconic status in this country. His four-part documentary follows Good, Rob Baker, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair as they begin their journey in bars and small venues, taking viewers along for the ride as they struggle to reach the top in Canada, and then try for success in the US. The film includes archival footage that’s never been publicly viewed before, along with interviews with people like Dan Akroyd, Geddy Lee, and Jay Baruchel.

Elton John: Never Too Late (R.J. Cutler, David Furnish) World Premiere

This documentary by Sir Elton’s husband (and Toronto native) David Furnish and co-director R.J. Cutler, uses newly discovered archival footage, along with candid interviews, for an intimate and insider’s view of the pop music icon. The film was made in the wake of Elton’s farewell show at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium, and looks back over his storied career, beginning at the same stadium back in 1975, when his fame was first starting to rise in earnest. While there have been other bio pics of the artist, none has incorporated this level of candour and closeness to the star.

Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band (Thom Zimny) World Premiere

The Boss himself narrates this look back at his band over the years, after 20 Grammy Awards, the concert records set, and an album that charted in the Top 5 in each of the last six decades. And, along with a look back at a storied band and career, he looks forward to the future, and a renewed passion as the venerable ensemble looks to tour again for the first time in six years.

Better Man (Michael Gracey) Canadian Premiere

Australian director Michael Gracey has created an unusually creative profile of British pop singer Robbie Williams using his background in visual effects to good use. The film follows Williams from his early days in boy band Take That to full-fledged solo pop superstar and back again. Along the way, his story has hit some notorious highs and lows, the latter often due to battles with drugs that began during his teens in Take That. Williams appears in the biopic, but is played as a teen and in other phases of his life by actors, adding to the theatrical flair of the piece.

Scene from The Gesuidouz, by Kenichi Ugana (Photo courtesy of TIFF)

TIFF Musicals

The deb (rebel wilson) world premiere.

Australian star Rebel Wilson takes her first turn behind the camera in this bold musical. The story revolves around two teenage cousins who could hardly be more different from each other, their rivalry and initial clash before getting together for the annual debutante ball. The humour is sly, and the blend of sweet, romantic, and raw outrageousness will be familiar to fans of the Pitch Perfect series. The songs were written by Meg Washington, with lyrics by Washington and Hannah Reilly.

Awāra (Raj Kapoor) World Premiere of 4K Restoration

This Bollywood classic, originally released in 1951, has been lovingly restored to screen on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Raj Kapoor’s birthday. Along with the expected musical numbers, you’ll find homages to Charlie Chaplin, and an underlying message about socialist reform. Often called “The Greatest Showman of Indian Cinema,” Kapoor both starred in and directed this crime drama.

TIFF Oddities

The gesuidouzザ・ゲスイドウズ (kenichi ugana) world premiere.

Cult filmmaker Kenichi Ugana crafted this story about a horror-themed punk band. Leader Hanako dreams of performing at the Glastonbury Festival, and then dying a romantic rock star death at age 27 like her heroes Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain. She and her band get the chance to take over a farm in the Japanese countryside to come up with a hit that will be their ticket to the top. Deadpan humour lights up this story about the often torturous creative process.

Fans pile into final Wembley Stadium show hoping Taylor Swift will announce 'Reputation'

Portrait of Bryan West

LONDON — Fans are clowning hard that Taylor Swift is going to announce "Reputation (Taylor's Version)" at the Eras Tour .

In Swiftie lingo, the term clowning refers to fans believing something may happen and when it doesn't looking like clowns. The rerelease of Swift's sixth album has been highly anticipated by fans chomping at the bit for the possible announcement. Every show along the European leg had some conspiracy theory tied to possible Easter egg clues dropped by Swift, but the one gaining the most traction is the final night at Wembley and last stop in Europe.

Before entering the stadium on Tuesday, Bridget Saric of Queensland, Australia, was one of those fans hoping she gets a surprise.

"I just feel like there's so much more tension in the air. I feel like it's all eyes on Wembley. It's all about Taylor and what she's going to do. It's crazy," she said.

Saric started a trend on TikTok where she is dancing every day until Swift's team notices her. Her goal is to meet the superstar. And even if that doesn't happen, she just enjoys spreading cheer. On Tuesday night, she plans to claim her spot on the floor and "Shake It Off" like she has at 13 other Eras Tour shows.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Her favorite song to dance to is "Fearless."

"It just takes me away every time," she said. "Also, I would probably say 'Betty.' I don't know what it is, but it just hits every time. The ["Reputation"] songs as well, every single one of them."

As Saric made her way to join 92,000 other Swifties inside, sketch artist Chris Lloyd readied his bag holding paint colors, pens, a miniature water bottle and sketch pad. The artist has gone viral a few times for creating whimsical scenes at concerts.

"The Eras Tour is properly a cultural moment," he said. "It's beyond the concert in my opinion. Like, this is so special because of the community and not just because of what happens in those three hours."

Lloyd has received attention from Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Sam Smith, Florence Pugh, Sabrina Carpenter and athletes of the Great Britain Olympics team. But it's not always sketches of celebrities that gain attention. The artist's most recent piece of a security guard handing out water bottles at Saturday night's show has been viewed more than 320,000 times on Instagram.

"I've drawn so many pop stars now that I'm actually really enjoying kind of picking a stranger out in the crowd that deserves something brilliant to happen," he said. "It's very much in line with the Swiftie energy as well. Like the community here is fab, and like, it's just nice to give back to that."

Swift set a new record for a solo artist at the British arena. She mentioned the feat while thanking fans at the start of her show.

"Not only our last night in London, but this is our last night on the European leg of the Eras Tour," she boomed. "You just made me the first solo artist to ever play Wembley eight times in a single tour. You doing that for us is forever."

Whether or not she announces a new album, fans are expecting some surprise before the confetti falls and the stage lights turn off.

Swift has a two-month break before kicking off her final North American leg in Miami in October.

Sir Elton John, is a singer, composer, pianist and all round British national treasure who has been blessing the world with his talents for decades.

Born in 1947 as Reginald Kenneth Dwight, Elton experienced a fairly restrictive childhood growing up in Middlesex. His musical talents were clear from an early age, taking up the piano aged 3 and getting a scholarship to the Royal Academy of music at 11.

After a turbulent relationship with Elton’s father, who expressed very little interest in the young musician, Elton’s mother divorced and remarried. The new couple helped Elton secure a job as a pub pianist where he worked until he formed a now legendary partnership with Bernie Taupin in 1967, following an advert in the NME,.

With Bernie writing the lyrics and Elton the music (a tried and tested method that still works today), the duo began writing popular works for other artists such as ‘LuLu’ before beginning on Elton’s solo material. The release of Elton’s self-titled second album saw him take the first leap towards stardom. It spawned the hit single ‘Your Song’ and landed the album at number 4 and 5 on the US charts respectively.

1972’s ‘Honky Chateau’ became Elton’s first number one album and would be followed by 6 more consecutively, most famously ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ which stayed at the top spot for two months.

Outside of music, Elton has been a important figure for LGBT rights around the world. He publicly came out in 1988 and has since been a vocal figure for important social causes such as the AIDS crisis and gay marriage in the UK.

Live reviews

Elton John is an amazing singer but lastnight at Cardiff City Stadium was such a disappointment. The sound quality was absolutely dreadful. The sound Tech staff should hang their heads in shame. Our night was ruined from the minute the music started.

The speakers in the centre of the stadium were about 1-2 seconds delayed so there was a constant echo. If you didn’t know the words to the songs then you wouldn’t know what the hell he was singing because of the poor quality. I don’t expect to pay the money we did to see a mega star on his Farewell tour to listen to it like we had to. Everyone we spoke to was disappointed.

Then there was the security....or should I say lack of...? We entered via gate 9, I had a tag put on my bag saying it had been checked. The guy never even looked inside. No personal searches were done & no one was scanned either. DISGUSTING. In this day and age where terrorism & knife crime is at its worst in the Uk, I would expect more....ALOT more. May I remind the event organisers/security team of The Manchester Arena bombing....seriously. People were entering with rucksacks, large shopping bags, golf umbrellas that could be used as weapons had there been fights etc. Then we witnessed the stewards on the pitch chatting to each other, texting, filming Elton John & basically doing everything BUT supervise the crowds. An Absolute shambles from start to end.

I will certainly remember this concert but NOT for the right reasons.

Everyone who stepped into that stadium lastnight was FAILED & LET DOWN.

There aren’t many artists who have sold more then 300 million records worldwide, but Elton John is one of these superstar legends. His single ‘Candle in the Wind’ selling 33 million copies alone, there are few who could even dream of topping that. The scope of his work is remarkable, from singer-songwriter music through to songs for feature films. And a knighthood from the Queen? Goodness me Elton!

Part of the magic of his performances is seeing him sit alone at his piano, accompanying himself and improvising to his own score. Over the years of course, his voice has grown weaker, but the magic remains and his performances do not lose their power, as he is backed up by a stellar band. One man holding the attention of an arena audience seems like an incredible feat, but Elton John at home on the stage, has this down to a tee. Aiming to please the audience, he always provides a selection of his great hits as well as some of the lesser known tracks from his older albums for some variation, something that usually pleases the hungry crowd.

50 years of performances, and Elton John’s stamina remains incredibly impressive, and if you are lucky enough to get your hands on a ticket, you can expect to watch a performance of anything up to 2 hours, and I promise, it will fly by!

I have been an Elton John fan since the 70s and this concert in Roanoke was the first chance I have had to see him and The Elton John Band perform live. It exceeded any possible expectations!! The sound live is so all encompassing, the piano so mesmerizing and so many of my favorite EJ songs! To hear 'Your Song' done in concert is just the most beautiful experience! Other numbers especially noteworthy in this concert were 'Philadelphia Freedom', 'I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues', 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' and one of his newest songs 'Good Heart'. The encore finale number of 'Crocodile Rock' just blows away any recording of it I have ever heard, phenomenal concert!! No other performer I have ever seen went the whole concert the way Elton John did, just amazing, I am so thankful I went and I would see him again if he tours anywhere I can reasonably get to. AMAZING, you will regret it if you miss the opportunity to hear this iconic performer and his band! Nigel Olsson on Drums with EJ since 1969, Scottish guitarist Davey Johnstone since 1972 (crazy talented, must see live to fully appreciate!) Thanks for coming to Roanoke, VA, Elton!! <3 A fan forever here <3

The concert was AWESOME! It was the first time I saw Elton in Concert. I have every album he has made and grew up with his music. The concert was one I will never forget. Even though I enjoy all the instruments and artists in his band I could listen to just him alone playing his piano. He puts his heart and soul in his music and I find myself remembering my life and feeling all the feelings I have over the last 45 years. He thanked his fans and was so gracious but I felt like I needed to thank him. He is blessed with his music and I felt I was Thankful to have him share his gift with me. He did something I have never seen in a concert before which warmed my heart. He not only went from side to side thanking his fans and shaking their hands. He also bent down and signed autographs. He was amazing. He took his time with his fans. So few times have I seen other artists take a second of their time to do the same. But Elton with his magnitude of success did far more than I have ever seen. I felt lucky and blessed to finally see the one concert I wanted to see for the last 45 years. Thank you Sir Elton John for sharing your heavenly talent! I am in Awe!

The SHOW was great, as a whole--I think. Video productions, etc. were awesome. Musicians looked to be performing well. The sound SUCKED! The sound in the Dallas American Airlines Center was so loud--especially the lower frequencies--that the mix was unintelligible. It was literally too loud to understand. We could distinguish not one word that was sung by Elton John--NOT ONE! Of course, we knew most of the words to the songs, but the only place we could distinguish those words was in our memories. If we EVER go to another rock/pop concert at AAC, it will be with earplugs, although even those probably wouldn't have helped at this concert. Covering my ears with my hands failed to significantly reduce the bass. I feel as though I paid $500 for two tickets to a video with an undecipherable soundtrack. While the SHOW was great, in general it was a disappointment. I have seen/heard Eric Clapton three previous times at AAC, and, while the sound was loud at those concerts, it was nothing like the Elton John concert. I suspect the fault lies with Elton John's engineers, so maybe this will be a problem elsewhere too.

This show was completely misrepresented by ALL promoters! The vast majority of concert goers thought we were going to witness a live concert with Elton backed by the Orchestra. What we received was a grossly overpriced movie showing of “Rocketman” with the Orchestra playing in the background during certain scenes.

A piano was brought out on stage during the movie intermission. At the tail end the film director introduced Elton, Bernie & the Actors. One song was performed with Elton on piano & Taron singing. That was a 5 minute nicety after a 3 hour let down.

I met two nice ladies who flew in from Canada dressed up and super excited only to be completely disappointed.

They gave out free concert posters at the end of show as we were exiting, that didn’t even represent what was real. I contemplate if I even want to hang on my wall as I do not wish to remember this experience because it was not a true representation of the night or what the poster implies.

We should ALL be refunded!!!!

Elton, were you aware of this advertising scam?

The production was first class by Baby Boomer standards; however, I would grade the performance as a B. Elton doesn't have the voice anymore, so he doesn't try for the real high notes and resorts to screaming some of the lyrics. The music was pretty tight, though he took liberties with the melody sometimes. Overall, it was a great show but it wasn't the best. I understand he will be performing over 300 concerts throughout this farewell tour, lasting into the Fall of 2021. That's a lot. He's not getting any younger and, in fact, he's seems to have some difficulty with mobility.

You can Google his play list but it doesn't include some of his bigger hits (Honky Cat or Harmony). He did go for nearly 2 hours straight and came back for a 2-song encore. I had comp tickets, but probably wouldn't pay the $300+ if I had to buy them. Glad I went, though. He is a legend!

Great concert. I was six rolls up from the Floor. There was two screens one on each side of the stage over the seats. Started at 8/7c. I live in Al. so I like the hour time difference. It was a sold out concert. Everybody was standing up dancing by their seats. Elton left the stage after just guessing 20 songs. After he left the stage. Everybody was hooping and hollowing, clapping like crazy. He came back and sang one more song before the show ending at around 10:40/9:40c. This was the 3rd E.J. concert. 1st was in 1999 in Chattanooga Tn. He was there alone. Then Sept. 12, 2012 in Huntsville, Al. with the band. And this time with the band. I didn't go to the 2013 Chattanooga concert because it hasn't been that long since I saw him in Huntsville. Now I'm waiting for Rod Stewart to come to Chattanooga. I saw him in Tampa Fl. when I lived near by for a short time.

The concert was fantastic. This was my 6th Elton John concert that I have been to and he never fails to please the crowd. Sadly the wind effected the sound though. Elton's tribute to Jonah Lomu was really heartfelt and beautiful. It was so lovely to see the whole audience swaying and holding up their cel phones and singing along with Elton to Don't let the sun go down on me. The same thing was done to one of my favourite songs, Candle in the wind which was written about Marilyn Monroe and later changed for Princess Diana it to was really emotional I will never forget that. The thing about Elton John is that you could tell that he really wanted to be there and that he truly loves what he does. He is a proffesional polished act. The other thing that was so good was that there were people of all ages at the concert. Elton John's music is timeless and ageless.

Wendyallen’s profile image

Well Elton has the sense to understand that his won't hit all the high notes he used to do. So he has adapted the songs to sung writhing his band, and he sings them comfortably. But they are not exactly as you may remember hearing them. After all you are listening to the original artist, but a different variant of the song. Some of them worked really well, like Bennie and the Jets, Saturday nights alright for fighting, others not so, like Tiny Dancer. Overall a credit to a master performer, plays for over 2 and a half hours. The thank you towards the fans of Australia was quite emotional, for him and us. All unscripted, he went deep into all the years of support and encouragement he received from Aus.

Possibly one of the best entertainers of his era, certainly the most flamboyant. We thank you and Bernie for your contribution of classic songs. Leon

Having toured relentlessly since 1970, playing almost 4,600 shows in 80 countries in the ensuing half a century, elton made the decision in 2017 that it was time to come off the road so he could fully embrace the next important chapter of his life and dedicate more time to his family. the farewell yellow brick road tour subsequently broke records, pushed boundaries and shattered expectations in a five year period of celebratory activity that solidified elton’s status in the very highest echelons of popular culture across the generations..

Elton John will play five special ‘encore’ concerts in Australia and New Zealand next year, extending his ongoing multi-year ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour’, which will mark his final run of shows.

John will kick off the new round of dates in Newcastle, New South Wales on January 10, 2023 before heading to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. He will then head to New Zealand to perform in Christchurch on January 24. He will then fly to Auckland to perform two rescheduled shows on January 27 and 28.

“In 2020 I promised that when I came back to finish my interrupted farewell, I’d perform some encore shows,” the singer-songwriter said when announcing the new dates. “I love your part of the world dearly and cannot wait to share these concerts with you!”

FACE TO FACE 25TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

It’s hard to believe that it’s been twenty-five years since Billy Joel and Elton John toured to Australia for the first time in tandem on their Face to Face tour.

It’s only fitting that twenty-five years on, Australia’s premier Elton John performer – Greg Andrew – and Australia’s premier Billy Joel performer – Anthony Mara – come face to face to deliver ELTON & BILLY: FACE TO FACE to celebrate and re-create the iconic tour. Elton John and Billy Joel have collectively amassed global sales edging on over half a billion albums and both are titled with being in the top ten selling music artists of all time.

Since the advent of their careers, they have both had successful and enduring touring resume’s, but in 1994 begun one of the world’s most successful and longest running tour partnerships in pop music history. Elton John toured extensively with Billy Joel on a series of Face to Face tours which toured globally in constant succession over the space of two decades, including for the first and only time in Australia in March 1998 where they performed to sold-out stadiums in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Elton John’s final Australian tour just got a whole lot bigger, with the legendary singer-songwriter today announcing half a dozen stadium dates for his farewell performances down under.

Riding high on the success of his big screen biopic Rocketman, it seems Elton mania is as big as ever.

The six new outdoor shows, which go on sale Tuesday 25 June, take Australia’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road concert tally to 32 (38 including New Zealand’s six performances) — and now carry the mammoth tour through five months, beginning in Perth on 30 November 2019 and wrapping up in March 2020.

“We’re thrilled to be adding even more dates to Elton’s final tour”, said promoter Michael Chugg in a press release. “Demand has been absolutely incredible, we know the Rocketman is going to create magic memories for Australia and New Zealand when he arrives later this year!”

The Rocket Man will arrive in early 2023 and tour dates include Newcastle (January 10), Melbourne (January 13), Sydney (January 18) and Brisbane (January 21).

The 75-year-old first started his 30-date farewell tour of Australia in late 2019 and wrapped up in March 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic halted international touring.

His upcoming shows mark the first time the 25-time platinum artist has performed in Newcastle.

Frontier Touring promoter Michael Chugg said while the Rocket Man had performed in the Hunter Valley several times, he believed the show at McDonald Jones Stadium would draw new interest.

We know a lot of people in Newcastle don't go to the valley," he said. "And the stadiums had a big face lift. So we thought that would be pretty cool.

"I expect we'll get a great crowd. I know people will travel from Tamworth, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie. The one thing about Elton is once you see him you want to go and see him again, because he's so brilliant.

"It will be an unbelievable show, he plays nearly three hours and it's full on Elton. Every song's a hit."

The veteran promoter hoped the concert would inspire more artists to add Newcastle to their touring schedules. "We'll be looking at it with any other major acts we bring in," Mr Chugg said.

Venues NSW CEO Kerrie Mather also believed the event would be a sign of things to come, saying it was an "incredibly exciting result for the region".

"We can't wait to welcome Elton John to Newcastle as part of his Australian tour in what will be an unforgettable night for the region," she said.

"This is an incredibly exciting result for Newcastle, and just a taste of the major events to come for the region."

Elton John teases Australian shows for Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour in 2023

Headshot of Simon Collins

Elton John wants to come back to see his “friends Down Under”.

The music legend has unveiled the final dates on his epic Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour, which kicked off nearly three years ago and will now stretch into 2023 with shows in New Zealand and Australia.

The 74-year-old Rocket Man played his most recent concert in Sydney on March 7 last year before his global swan song was derailed by COVID-19.

Elton John Concert at HBF Park in Perth in 2019.

Elton will return to the long and winding road on September 1 in Berlin, a week shy of exactly three years since the tour began in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The rescheduled jaunt, which was originally meant to wrap up in London at the end of last year, then bounces between North America, Europe and the UK for most of 2022, before dates at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland on January 27 and 28.

Australian concerts are yet to be unveiled but are expected to follow the superstar’s final performances in New Zealand.

The artist born Reginald Dwight said he’d been working towards the announcement of his final shows for “all my life”.

“I’m going to go out in the biggest possible way, performing in places that have meant so much to me throughout my career,” he said.

“I can’t wait to see you all on the road one last time.

“This has been an incredible tour so far, full of the most amazing highs, and I look forward to making more wonderful memories with you at these final shows.

“To all my friends Down Under,” Elton added, “we’ll be seeing you too.”

The flamboyant superstar kicked off the Australasian leg of Farewell Yellow Brick Road with two gigs at Perth’s HBF Park in late 2019 to a total of 44,000 fans.

Elton John with husband David Furnish in Los Angeles earlier this year.

The superb shows featured 25 songs ranging from hits such as Crocodile Rock, Tiny Dancer, Daniel and Candle in the Wind alongside deeper cuts, including All the Girls Love Alice and Burn Down the Mission.

If Elton’s still standing and plays Perth again as planned in 2023, it will be 52 years after he made his Australian concert debut at Subiaco Oval on October 17, 1971.

“Well, here we are in the outback,” the 24-year-old pop singer quipped before starting with then recent hit, Your Song.

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting Elton John tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as they’re progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Elton John will bring his  Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour back to stages around Australia and New Zealand in January 2023. Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com.au.
