There are a few things you need to know before booking your Mt. Fuji tour.

1. Don’t book too far in advance

You need nice clear weather to get the best views of Mt. Fuji — if it’s even a little cloudy, you might not see anything! Trust us, we know from experience. So, the best thing to do is to check the weather forecast and book your tour no more than a week in advance . This is where the huge variety of tours really helps, because there’ll always be something available.

2. Avoid peak times

On a similar note, try to avoid booking a tour on weekends or during holiday periods . Not only will prices likely be higher, but it will also be more crowded. Traffic jams often happen, and if you’re on a bus tour this can add several hours to your journey time, both ways.

3. Decide whether you want a view OF or a view FROM Mt. Fuji

Finally, decide whether you want to go up Mt. Fuji or just look at it. Tours that go up Mt. Fuji usually stop at the 5th Station (about halfway up), unless they’re specifically a climbing Fuji tour. Next, you’ll have a lunch break near Lake Kawaguchi , before heading to Oishi Park . The park is known for its seasonal flowers, and the fantastic view of Mt. Fuji across the lake.

The final stop is Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba (also known as Healing Village). This open-air museum is on the site of an old farming village that was destroyed by a landslide in 1966. It was reconstructed, and the old thatched-roof houses were converted into museums, galleries, and shops. It’s a great spot to pick up handcrafted souvenirs, and of course there’s another chance to take a good photo of Mt. Fuji.

The tour includes round-trip bus transport from Tokyo. There are two pick-up locations: one in Shinagawa and one in Shinjuku. However, at the end of tour there is only one drop-off point, which is in Shinjuku.

Next, you’ll head to Shinobi No Sato Ninja Village, a ninja theme park. You’ll have lunch there, and then finish off the day with a visit to the Hakone area . Hakone is known for its natural beauty and — if the weather is good — a great view of Mt. Fuji.

On this tour, you depart Tokyo by bus from pick-up locations in either Shinjuku or Ginza. Included in the price is a return Shinkansen ticket to get you back at the end of the day.

A pleasant 3-minute walk from the bus stop will lead you to Yagizaki Park . Nestled along the southern coast of Lake Kawaguchi, Yagizaki Park presents a picturesque vista of the Misaka Mountains and the captivating shoreline of the lake stretching before you. The park features an array of shrubs and plants, including lavender, enhancing the scenic allure with the majestic presence of Mt. Fuji in the distance. It's a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll after a satisfying meal. Every year, from June to July, Yagizaki Park hosts the Herb Festival , transforming the surroundings into a splendid purple carpet as the lavender blooms. Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba: Experience the Charm of a Traditional Japanese Farming Village

Mount Fuji (�x�m�R, Fujisan) is with 3776 meters Japan's highest mountain. It is not surprising that the nearly perfectly shaped volcano has been worshiped as a sacred mountain and experienced big popularity among artists and common people throughout the centuries.

Mount Fuji is an active volcano, which most recently erupted in 1707. It stands on the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures and can be seen from Tokyo and Yokohama on clear days.

Another easy way to view Mount Fuji is from the train on a trip between Tokyo and Osaka. If you take the shinkansen from Tokyo in the direction of Nagoya , Kyoto and Osaka , the best view of the mountain can be enjoyed from around Shin-Fuji Station on the right hand side of the train, about 40-45 minutes into the journey.

Note however, that clouds and poor visibility often block the view of Mount Fuji, and you have to consider yourself lucky if you get a clear view of the mountain. Visibility tends to be better during the colder seasons of the year than in summer, and in the early morning and late evening hours than during the middle of the day.

If you want to enjoy Mount Fuji at a more leisurely pace and from a nice natural surrounding, you should head to the Fuji Five Lake (Fujigoko) region at the northern foot of the mountain, or to Hakone , a nearby hot spring resort. Mount Fuji is officially open for climbing during July and August via several routes.

What to know when booking a bus tour to Mt. Fuji

Road traffic to and from Mount Fuji, especially during public holidays, can be very busy. 

A day trip to Mt. Fuji can be a long and tiring day. 2 tours therefore provide the option to return with the Shinkansen at the end of the excursion. This may get you back to your hotel 2 hours faster.

2. Mount Fuji and Hakone 1 Day Tour with optional return by bullet train

Points of interest around the Mt. Fuji area

To help you make your choice, we have a little more information about the different points of interest that are included in these tours.

Mt. Fuji 5th station

A Mt. Fuji 5th station is as close to Mt. Fuji as you can get without climbing the mountain.  There are four different so-called 5th stations.  These stations contain shops where those who will climb to the top can buy their supplies.

The stations are excellent places for beautiful views of Mount Fuji, the Japanese Alps, and the greater Fifth Lake area. 

The Mount Fuji Subaru Line 5th station is the most accessible of the 4 stations and therefore most tours will make a stop here.

Keep in mind that visiting a Mount Fuji 5th station is not always possible. The roads are closed in winter and outside that period the road may also be closed at short notice because of heavy snowfall or rain. In those cases, the itineraries of these tours will be changed.

Kawaguchiko Lake 

Lake Kawaguchiko is the largest of the 5 Mt. Fuji lakes. 

Weather permitting, it’s a great place to catch amazing views of Mt. Fuji.

Besides splendid views of Mount Fuji, it offers plenty of other great activities such as onsen, museums, cable cars, hiking trails, an amusement park, and much more. 

Below we share the places that are most often visited with a tour.

Arakura Sengen Shrine and Chureito Pagoda

The Chureito Pagoda is part of the Arakura Sengen Shrine.

This is an iconic Mount Fuji viewing spot. We took this picture in February, if you visit the shrine a few weeks later, during the Sakura season, the view is even more beautiful.

A stop at this famous shrine is included in tour 3 and tour 8 .

Oshino Hakkai Village

Oshino Hakkai is recognized as a world cultural heritage site since 2013.

It is famous for its eight sacred ponds with crystal water.

Here you can also find Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan, an open-air museum  that showcases old traditional farmhouses along with traditional farming tools, samurai armors, and various weapons from that time.  

The traditional houses, with the perfectly shaped volcano in the background, make for a perfect picture that could have been made in the old days of Japan.

It is visited with tour 3 , tour 4 , and tour 5 .

Oshino Shinobi no Sato

Oshino Shinobi no Sato also called the Ninja Village, is a place where you can rent Ninja costumes, watch a Ninja show and solve the mystery of the Karakuri house which is full of traps and secret doors. 

From the garden, you can enjoy great views of Mt. Fuji. 

It’s a great place to visit if you are traveling with children.

Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba

This is an open-air museum on the Western shores of Lake Saiko.

Take a stroll through the village and marvel at the houses with thatched roofs which will give you a glimpse into life in Japan in the olden days.

Here you can also participate in craft workshops and rent Japanese costumes to take a picture. 

It is visited with tour 8 .

Hakone is a lush green and picturesque region not too far from Mt. Fuji. It is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes and hot springs, and even more so for the views of iconic Mount Fuji. 

Below are the activities that these tours do in the Hakone region.

Lake Ashi is a peaceful lake surrounded by mountains. It’s a busy destination in Hakone as it is part of the Hakone Loop , a popular loop that takes you past many of Hakone’s highlights.

Lake Ashi is a great place for hiking. Trails follow the shoreline or lead to viewpoints up into the mountains.

Another popular activity is a cruise. If weather permits the cruise will offer good views of Mt. Fuji.

The following tours include a cruise on the lake: tour 1 , tour 2 , tour 6 , and tour 7 .

Hakone ropeway

On a clear day, you’ll be able to spot a scenic view of Mount Fuji as you ride the ropeway. In addition, the cable car also offers a beautiful view of the volcanic Owakudani valley.

This ropeway is included in tour 1 , tour 2 , tour 6 , and tour 7 .

Owakudani Valley, also known as “Hell Valley”, is an amazing place. It is one of the few places in the region where you can see the volcanic activity so clearly.

You smell the sulfur smell and see the boiling mud pools.

You can also eat black eggs here, eggs that were boiled in the mud puddles. Eating 1 egg would give you 7 extra years of life. At least that’s how the myth goes…

A visit to the valley is included in tour 1 , tour 2, tour 6 and tour 7 .

Gotemba Premium Outlets

The Gotemba Premium Outlets is one of the largest outlets in Japan where you can find most of the US and European premium brands such as Hugo Boss, Gap, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Godiva chocolates, etc.

Most of the stores are tax-free for tourists. So don’t forget to take your passport and show it to the cashier when you pay.

It’s a great place to combine bargain hunting with taking pictures of Mount Fuji.

Shopping time at the Gotemba Premium Outlets is included in   tour 4,   tour 5, and tour 7

Komagatake Ropeway

The Komagatake Ropeway starts at the shore of Lake Ashi and leads to the peak of Mt. Komagatake, at 1.356 meters one of the tallest peaks in the area.

On a clear day, you can enjoy beautiful views of Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji from the observation platform at the top station.

You can also visit the Mototsumiya Shrine. The “shrine in the sky” is at the very top of the mountain, only a short walk from the top station of the gondola.

The Komagatake ropeway is included in  tour 6 .

Mishima Skywalk

The Mishima Skywalk is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan. It is 400 meters long and thanks to its spectacular location it offers breathtaking views on both Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay.

Next to the suspension bridge there is also an adventure park with a zip line and a treetop parcours.

The first stop of this Mt Fuji day tour from Tokyo will be at the 5th station of Mount Fuji. This is 2,300 metres above sea level and offers the best place to view the land surrounding Mt. Fuji. If you’re lucky, you can even glimpse Tokyo from the deck.

Climb the mountain at a pace that even beginners can aim to reach the summit

Our tour is designed in way that even beginners can reach the summit. The tour will proceed at a slow pace and take moderate breaks. The goal is to get to the top without overdoing it therefore even people who are not confident about their stamina can climb safely.

Mountain hut stay

A one-night stay at a mountain hut is included. Hiking from 7th and 8th station is the most difficult and hardest point. Since you will stay at Tomoekan located at original 8th station, you can hike there during daytime and take a rest before summit attack.

Day-1 dinner and Day-2 breakfast are included. *Vegetarian menu is also avaialble. *There are some food menu at the mountain huts. If you wish, please make an additional payment by your sefl.

This is a compilation of frequently asked questions about the Mt. Fuji Climbing Tour. Please check if your question has been addressed.

Climbing gear is quite expensive. Would it be OK to substitute it for cheaper rainwear and/or shoes?

During the Mount Fuji climbing tour, the temperatures ranges from the hotness of midsummer to the coldness of midwinter; and you will experience unstable weather conditions such as sudden rain and strong winds, even if the weather appears clear at the beginning. To prepare items that have been especially made for mountain climbing, made of materials such as Gore-Tex is recommendable due to their functionality and durability. There are suitable items at general stores, however, if it is difficult to decide what to buy, a specialized shop may offer ones. Also, a professional gear rental plan is available at Willer Travel’s Mount Fuji Climbing Tour (An advanced booking has to be made.)

Can one person only sign up for the trip, or does it have to be a group?

You are more than welcome to join the tour by yourself, there are many participants doing so. However, the private room guaranteed plan is limited to groups of 2 people. Single participants cannot apply.

Can I join the tour from the 5th station of Mt. Fuji?

No, you can not join the tour from anywhere other than Shinjuku. Please be sure to board the bus from the assembly point. If you don't take the bus from Shinjuku, you will be considered not to participate in the tour.

Where can I choose the gear size? And can I change the size after reservation?

After selecting the number of participants on the reservation screen, you will see the schedule confirmation. There, please select the size of climbing boots and rainwear for each participant. *You can change the size at the rental store on the day of the tour.

What should I be careful of when climbing Mount Fuji?

Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, is 3,776m high. Therefore, it would be difficult to get to the summit if you do not plan for climbing or keeping an appropriate pace. Also, you may get altitude sickness at worst. In addition, there are many climbers during Mount Fuji climbing season. Follow the climbing guidelines for all other climbers. Please refer to "About climbing Mount Fuji" to learn climbing information and guidelines.

Will the same bus be used for both ways? Can we leave our luggage in the bus or are there any coin lockers?

The vehicle or bus company may not be the same for both trips. Any luggage cannot be left inside the bus. Please use the coin lockers (large: 600 yen / small: 300 yen) at Fujikyu Unjokaku at the 5th station for any unnecessary luggage. There may be cases where all the lockers are in use in the peak season.

Is it possible to watch the sunrise from the summit?

On this tour, you will watch the sunrise from the 9th station instead of the summit. Please note that you cannot leave the group to reach the summit. Every year, many climbers aim for the summit during sunrise, and the summit is extremely crowded. In consideration of safety first, this tour plans to watch the sunrise from the 9th station. Please be assured that you can watch a sufficiently wonderful sunrise from the 9th station. *Please note that you may not be able to watch the sunrise depending on the weather.

How much money should I bring?

About 5,000 yen is enough on the mountain. Prepare a lot of coins instead of bills. Toilets at Mount Fuji requires money payment. Since you need a 100 yen coin to use one, plenty of these coins should be brought. In addition, Food and drink at the stations are rather expensive due to shipping charges. Extra cash should be prepared. (Sample expenses) Pay toilets: 1,200-1,500 yen（200-300 yen/1 time） Bottled water: 500-1,000 yen（400-500 yen/1 bottle） *other expenses such as souvenirs, offerings and brands for walking sticks are not included.

Do I need to take anti-sunburn precautions?

UV rays are so strong on the mountain that taking measures to avoid sunburns is necessary. Sunscreen and sunglasses are must items. Sunscreen will run off from sweat even after being put on once. Put it on again frequently. Sunglasses are not just for blocking out blinding light, but also absorb the UV rays to prevent the darkening of corneas since melanin pigments make skin get a tan after corneas absorb the UV rays. Sunglasses that fully cover the eyes are recommended.

How much water should I bring?

Bring a liter when start the climb. Refills are purchasable from the mountain huts. Two or three liters are required for one climb (two days with an overnight stay). Carrying all in a rucksack is a heavy burden therefore prepare the first liter and purchase one at the mountain huts on the way to the summit. Be careful for dehydration leads to altitude sickness.

Can I join the tour with a child?

Children 6 years old and over who can communicate in English can join the tour. Please select an adult when making a reservation since the tour fee is the same for adults and children.

As a record number of Australians head to Japan, some restaurants and tourist attractions have started implementing two-tiered pricing systems for visitors and locals.

Japan's weak currency is attracting tourists in droves, but it's pushing up costs for local businesses.

All-you-can-eat seafood restaurant Tamatebako, located in one of Tokyo's busiest districts Shibuya, is one of the restaurants charging different prices for residents of Japan and tourists.

A note in Japanese at the bottom of the eatery's menu says Japanese residents receive a 1,000-yen ($9.50) discount.

"Regular" pricing for the all-you-can-eat and drink seafood buffet is 8,778 yen ($83), while those with proof of residency in Japan can have the same meal for 7,678 yen ($73).

Restaurant owner Shogo Yonemitsu told the ABC the influx of tourists had forced him to employ English-speaking staff who were paid a slightly higher wage.

He said the price difference also took into account the "extra labour of teaching foreigners the right manners at Japanese restaurants".

Imposing the extra costs created by tourists onto locals would be unfair, he said.

"We have also experienced many tourists cancelling at the last minute, which very few Japanese people do," he said.

Dragged down by Japan's low inflation and interest rates, the yen has lost about a third of its value compared to the US dollar since 2021.

The currency's weakness has made Japan an attractive destination for travellers.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation, the number visiting Japan has surpassed pre-pandemic levels of visitors every month since January of this year.

A record 252,900 Australians travelled to Japan between January and March compared to 172,896 during the same period in 2019.

That included 82,000 in March, which was almost double the number in March 2019.

However, the weak yen has also made the price of imports such as food higher, forcing restaurants to either increase prices or cop the costs.

Yonemitsu said the Japanese government had failed to provide any support for restaurants to keep up with demand and increasing costs due to the weakening of the yen.

When asked about the reaction from customers Yonemitsu said, "our customers come knowing our pricing system, so it hasn't caused any issues".

Tourist hotspots' two-tiered pricing

It's not just restaurants that are implementing tiered pricing.

UNESCO World Heritage site Himeji Castle in western Japan is considering quadrupling the entry prices for foreign tourists.

The mayor of Himeji city, Hideyasu Kiyomoto, said in a press conference he supported differential pricing.

"Foreign tourists come here once in their lifetime, but locals enjoy this place regularly," he said.

Japan's iconic Mount Fuji introduced a mandatory 2,000 yen ($19) climbing fee in May, but some have called for the fee to be increased for tourists.

Mountaineer Ken Noguchi said the fee was not high enough to combat over tourism.

"Tourists should pay 30,000 yen ($284), while locals pay 10,000 yen ($95)," Noguchi said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Japanese politicians such as Kenta Izumi also voiced their support for two-tiered pricing.

Stagnant wages

While the weakening of the yen has allowed inbound tourists to be able to spend more in Japan, the country's stagnant wages has meant locals' purchasing power has remained relatively low.

Wages in Japan have barely increased in the past 20 years, with the average minimum wage still only 1,004 yen ($9.52) per hour in 2023, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan.

"The two-tiered pricing system could be a way to keep restaurants accessible for locals instead of being priced out," said Garth Lean, a senior lecturer in tourism and heritage studies at Western Sydney University.

"But it might mean that for tourists it becomes a more expensive experience, and they might feel taken advantage of," said Dr Lean.

The Japanese cabinet has released a white paper on tourism to address the growing concerns about over tourism.

It said the government would support increased efforts to create sustainable solutions to the problem.

The Japan National Tourism Organisation told the ABC that "generally speaking, tourists should pay whatever is deemed an appropriate price during their travels in Japan".
