NOMATIC, as you may or may not know, is a Kickstarter-launched brand that set out to make the “most functional travel bag ever.” And they have a new contender up for consideration.

The NOMATIC Travel Pack is a 20- to 30-liter expandable backpack that offers a smooth, streamlined look and some clear upgrades over the NOMATIC Travel Bag we reviewed previously (not confusing at all, right?)

NOMATIC Travel Pack In Use

To make matters slightly more confusing, the NOMATIC Travel Pack (that’s pack , not bag ) we’re reviewing also has some improvements over its original version. This new version of the pack was released in August 2019 with some minor tweaks compared to the previous edition—at the time of this review, it’s the latest version available.

So, does the NOMATIC Travel Pack come closer to that “most functional” goal the Utah-based company is going for? Well, we’ve been testing it for three weeks in Detroit, Michigan, so let’s take a look.

Materials & Aesthetic

The newer version of the NOMATIC Travel Pack has a much cleaner and more subdued look, which we dig.

The pack’s exterior features a tarpaulin material, which—in our experience—tends to scuff and mark up more than other materials on the market (like nylon or polyester). That said, this tarpaulin feels a little more high-quality than the original Travel Pack. It’s rubbery but less slippery. It’s also less shiny, which gives this bag a more subdued aesthetic. Overall, it just feels better—so this is a welcomed upgrade.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Material

At the time of this review, the only colorway available on the NOMATIC Travel Pack is black—and if you know us, you know we’re totally okay with that.

When it comes to branding, there’s a simple NOMATIC logo on the front of the pack, another on the shoulder strap, back panel, and a couple of other places. Do you remember the triangle pattern on the front of the original Travel Pack? Well, it’s gone in this update. The team was split here at Pack Hacker HQ about the looks of the triangles, but there’s no denying this all-black version with minimal branding is a much cleaner look.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Logo

Beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder, so we polled our Instagram audience about this pack’s aesthetic. Over half gave it the thumbs up—and if you want to give your opinion in future polls, follow @packhacker on Instagram.

Wrapping up the materials on the NOMATIC Travel Pack, we have durable Wujin hardware on the strap adjusters and buckles. And you’ll notice a mix of weatherproof Zoom zippers and YKK zippers (more on these zipper choices later).

External Components

The harness system on the NOMATIC Travel Pack is a classic “good news, bad news” situation.

The shoulder straps are mediocre, with limited padding that isn’t very dense. Now, the straps are decently thick, but it’s not necessarily the thickness that makes straps comfortable. It’s more about the foam density which is lacking in these straps—meaning the pack can get uncomfortable while carrying a heavy load.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Shoulder Straps

This isn’t a huge deal if you’re using the Travel Pack in the 20-liter mode as an everyday carry, but you’ll want to keep this in mind if you’re planning to expand the bag to 30-liters, load it with heavy gear, and use it as a full-blown one-bag travel backpack. If that’s the case, you’re going to feel that weight on your shoulders more than we’d like.

The sternum strap on this backpack is adjustable and detachable. It’s smooth to slide up and down and does not come off easily—which means it’s less likely to get lost. The sternum strap also has some elastic which flexes while you walk to add comfort—a small but always-appreciated feature.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Sternum Strap

The shoulder strap adjusters on the NOMATIC Travel Pack are pretty standard. The materials are durable and you can tighten and loosen them as needed. The only thing we wish this pack had here would be some elastic keepers to manage the excess strap.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Shoulder Straps Adjustment

At the bottom of the Travel Pack’s harness system, you’ll find two rubbery-like Hypalon attachment points for a hip belt. These little loops don’t get in the way as is, but they can also be tucked under the back panel when not in use.

While the hip belt itself is on the bulky side, we like the functionality. Plus, it makes the NOMATIC Travel Pack more comfortable to carry when loaded out. We dig how it attaches with metal buckles and it has some handy pockets for smaller, flatter items.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Hip Belt

There’s a padded grab handle at the top—much more padded than the shoulder straps. It would have been nice if the folks at NOMATIC swapped some of this padding into the shoulder straps to make them more comfortable. But instead, we get a comfortable handle.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Top Handle

Since this handle is anchored between the two shoulder straps, it can be a little bit unwieldy to pick up and carry (compared to a bag-mounted handle). Because of all the zippers, there’s really no place to attach the handle to the bag—so this will have to do.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Top Handle In Use

Speaking of structure, this bag stands up by itself thanks to its foam padding and boxy shape. We know this is a key consideration for a lot of people—including all of you who specifically ask us to find bags that stand up (hi there!)—so it’s definitely worth mentioning.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Standing Up

The back panel, which also has a small channel for airflow, unbuttons to give you a place to hide the straps. It does take a little longer than we’d like to unbutton, tuck away the straps, and rebutton this panel. It sounds nitpicky, we know, but when you use a pack that does this well you notice. That said, if you take your time with the NOMATIC Travel Pack, the straps hide away nicely.

Almost done with External Components, we promise.

The NOMATIC Travel Pack has a luggage pass-through at the back, which is great if you’re wheeling roller luggage around the airport too.

Each side of this pack has both a water bottle holder and a side handle. The water bottle pockets are expandable thanks to a stretchy mesh that opens up to fit a larger water bottle . And magnets (which are always fun) keep the pocket nice and sleek when it’s not in use.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Water Bottle Pocket

The side handles are low-profile but work pretty well to grab the bag when you’re on the go. Plus, they’re attached to internal stays which help the pack keep its structure. We will note, however, that using the side handles can be more difficult when the water bottle pockets are in-use as there not much room for your hand.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Side Handle

Inside the Pack

The NOMATIC Travel Pack has a lot of interior features, so grab a beverage of choice and get comfortable. Ready? Let’s go.

First things first, there’s a small hidden zipper pocket on the backside of the pack, behind the frame sheet. It’s a little difficult to access, but that’s a good thing—your passport, or valuables like cash and credit cards, will be safe from pickpockets.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Security Pocket

Next up is a quick-grab pocket at the top that’s perfectly-sized for smartphones or sunglasses. It’s easy to access and lined with a soft material that shouldn’t scratch your screen or lenses.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Quick-Grab Pocket In Use

There’s also a cord pass-through here that can be used to charge your phone if you want to have a battery bank inside the main compartment of the bag.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Cord Pass-Through

Just below that quick-grab pocket, you’ll find a large U-shaped pocket that peels open and gives you a ton of organization options. On the previous version of the Travel Pack, we had issues with the gussets—which keep this flap from opening all the way—getting caught in the zipper, but, so far, we haven’t had any issues on this new version.

Those gussets are made from the same material as the lining—which is another noteworthy upgrade from the original version. The new liner material is a heathered gray fabric that looks more polished and feels a bit better in the hand too (compared to the original version).

NOMATIC Travel Pack Liner Material

Inside the front flap of the U-shaped pocket, you’ll find a zippered RFID pocket at the top, which covers about half of the flap. Below that pocket, there’s a smaller zippered pocket, two sleeves for pens, pencils, or styluses (styli?), and two mesh liner pockets.

On the other side of this compartment, there are four mesh pockets—two rows of two—and a flat liner pocket that’s a good size for a laptop charger or medium-sized notebook . All of the mesh pockets are stretchy with elastic at the top to keep your gear organized.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Front Pocket Organization

Although the engineering here does seem a bit overkill, these options could be great if you want to pick and choose how you compartmentalize your gear. And, the good news is, everything lays flat so it’s out of the way if you’re not using it.

Before we jump into the laptop compartment, let’s talk zippers (#zippertalk).

We’re surprised to see that the folks at NOMATIC used Zoom zippers for the laptop compartment. One of the big upgrades on this new Travel Pack is the use of YKK zippers—but they’re not used throughout. The laptop compartment is arguably one of the most important parts of the bag—it attaches the harness system to the rest of the bag—so it seems like YKK would have been a better choice here. While all zipper brands can break, we’ve generally had better luck with YKK than with Zoom.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Zippers

Okay, are you ready to get back to pockets?

The laptop compartment completely opens up clamshell-style. You could theoretically keep your laptop in the bag when going through airport security—though it’s ultimately up to the TSA agent whether or not they’ll allow it.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Laptop Compartment Open Clamshell

The laptop sleeve itself has a false bottom, which means your laptop is more protected from unexpected drops. And that’s exactly what we like to see.

In front of the laptop sleeve, you’ll find a tablet pocket. Both sections have a soft lining and a Velcro closure to keep your gear secure. On the opposite side of this compartment, there’s a divider pocket that’s a good place for travel documents or other flat items.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Laptop Sleeve In Use

On to the main compartment of the NOMATIC Travel Pack—which opens clamshell (are you sensing a theme?). First, you’ll see the cord pass-through we mentioned earlier at the top of the front flap that goes into the quick-grab pocket. Then, below that, you get two zippered mesh pockets which are a pretty good size for chargers, cords, or other tech.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Main Compartment Open Clamshell

Inside this main compartment, there are four mesh pockets on the sides: two on the right and two on the left. The mesh pockets on the left are a little bit larger and can fit the included sunglasses case.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Mesh Pockets In The Main Compartment (Left Side)

The sunglasses case feels a bit cheap, although it does a decent job of keeping your sunglasses safe. If you have the case in that left-side pocket, it does stick out and obstructs you from using the full width of the main compartment. Not a deal-breaker, but something to keep in mind.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Sunglasses Case Interfering With Packing Cube

The mesh pockets on the right are smaller with a slanted opening. Plus, the bottom pocket has a retractable key leash, so you don’t have to unhook your keys every time you need to open a door.

The best part of all this organization? It gets out of the way if you don’t need it. Even the retractable key leash can be removed.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Mesh Pockets In The Main Compartment (Right Side)

Okay, here we are. The part you’ve all been waiting for
expanded mode!

To put the NOMATIC Travel Pack into expanded mode, you unzip the zipper that’s right in the middle of the bag. That’s it—you now have a 30-liter pack.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Expanded

Now that it’s expanded, you’ll see another zipper that opens up the expanded main capacity (you guessed it) clamshell-style. This part of the bag is not really accessible when it’s compressed.

Pro Tip: this is a perfect place to store the hip belt when you’re not using it. That way, you’ll have it stashed away for everyday carry, but ready-to-go when you expand the bag and use it for travel.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Expanded Main Compartment Open Clamshell

This expanded main compartment has a large mesh divider pocket on one side—which opens into the main compartment we just talked about—and a semi-elastic liner pocket on the other. Besides that, it’s pretty much a big empty space, which is great for filling with packing cubes.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Expanded Main Full Of Packing Cubes

If you like, you can keep this mesh part completely unzipped to have access to both sides of the bag at all times (like if you want to use packing cubes, for example). There’s no easy way to hide the mesh if you do keep it open but it hasn’t been an issue for us. If you prefer a bag that does this really well, check out the Peak Design Travel Backpack .

Durability & Testing

A couple of our team members have been testing the Nomatic Travel Pack around Detroit, Michigan for about three weeks.

From a usage perspective, it’s been going pretty well overall. While we’re digging some of the pockets and organization, the design and functionality is a bit of overkill in some areas.

NOMATIC Travel Pack In Use

As for durability, we’ve noticed some marks and scratches on the tarpaulin. This isn’t necessarily the NOMATIC Travel Pack exclusively, but rather a potential issue with any bag that uses this material on the exterior.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Material Scuffs

We like the idea of expandability, but it has to be functional too. This expandable feature on the NOMATIC Travel Pack is an appreciated design feature, but when you go from the 20- to 30-liter mode, it gets chunky and unwieldy. For everyday carry in the 20-liter mode, everything feels pretty slick. When expanded to 30 liters and full of heavy gear, the harness system gets more uncomfortable and the bag gets bulky and harder to manage.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

  • Tons of pockets of all different sizes all over this bag
  • Padded, floating laptop sleeve has its own compartment for quick access
  • Expandable zipper lets you switch between having a 20L and 30L bag
  • Impressed by all of the organization, but it may be overkill
  • Laptop sleeve feels secure thanks to the false bottom
  • Uncomfortable carry when fully loaded

The Nomatic Travel Pack is PERFECT You If

You want a 2-in-1 extendable backpack . This pack can be used both as a 20L day or commuter backpack or it can be extended and turned into a 30L overnight/weekend pack.

You want a laptop compartment. The Nomatic travel pack has a 15” laptop compartment located on the inside of the pack. If this is something you value then bingo!

You value organisational options. All of the Nomatic packs really shine when it comes to organisation. Everything has its own place and there are loads of zip and mesh pockets dotted all over the pack. Therefore if you like to travel neat and tidy then this pack may be for you. Fellow OCD heads unite!

The Nomatic Travel Pack is NOT For You If

You need a big backpack . When extended, the Nomatic Travel Pack offers 30L of storage. That is enough for a weekend break or maybe a week if you are a seriously minimalist light packer.

If this is you then check out either the Nomatic 40L Travel Bag or one of their full-blown suitcase/luggage models like the Nomatic Navigator or the awesome Nomatic Check In .

You are on a tight budget. Coming in at $300 this pack is not cheap. In fact, $300 is actually quite expensive for a 30L backpack. Whilst it may well justify the price tag, it does nevertheless exclude those who are short on funds.

You’re looking for a camera-specific bag. Whilst this bag will fit some photography gear in, the clever folks at Nomatic have designed a bag specifically designed for camera gear in collaboration with Pete Mckinnon that is better suited for keeping your expensive gear safe.

The Nomatic Travel Pack at a Glance

The original and maybe best Nomatic backpack , the Travel Pack is an adaptable backpack that converts from 20 to 30L meaning it can be used either as a day pack or as a small travel pack. It is well made, stylish and has some lovely, innovative features.

Looking for something smaller? Have a look at the Nomatic Messenger Bag , it’s a great stand-alone pack if you want to travel super light or a good addition to this bag if you need extra space for valuables.

Nomatic Travel Pack

  • Capacity: 30l when Expanded (20L when not expanded)
  • Weight:   4.16 lb (1.9 kg)
  • Dimensions: 18.5 in x 12 in x 9.5 in (47 x 30.5 x 24.1 cm) (when extended)

Word Up Funsters – In case you get to the end of this review and don’t quite think that the Nomatic Travel Pack is for you, then note that Nomatic also offers 2 similar packs; the 40L Nomatic Travel Bag and the 20 – 24L Nomatic Backpack.

We have written a full  Nomatic Travel Bag review as well as a Nomatic Backpack review . On the other hand, if you’re looking for something bigger and more like a suitcase, have a look at the Nomatic Carry On Pro instead.

Let’s now take a detailed look at the main features of the Nomatic Travel Pack.

Aesthetics & Material

The Nomatic brand really does have a strong brand identity and all of their packs fit a certain, in-house style. The Travel Pack like other Nomatic offerings has a simple, classy almost minimal look that helps it to blend in equally well in the airport lounge, the office or the gym. Some critics find the design too ‘boxy’ and austere but that’s all subjective.

The main material is some form of tarpaulin material. It feels kind of rubbery but pleasant to the touch and offers a good level of water resistance which is a real plus.

Storage Capacity

nomatic travel pack

Ok, listen up because this is important. As we said earlier, what makes this pack unique and special is that it is extendable. It’s default setting is 20L but it can be extended to accommodate 30L of glorious travel junk.

The expansion works simply by “zipping down” the pack using a zip located right slap bang in the middle of the pack. And when you have finished using it as 30L, you can simply zip it back up.

In case you don’t know, 20L is generally suitable for day use and 30L suitable for overnight and weekend use.

Size, Weight & Fit

As this pack is extendable, the size of it does change accordingly. At full mast (ie, unzipped to 30L mode) the size is 18.5 in x 12 in x 9.5 in (47 x 30.5 x 24.1 cm) which is kind of standard size for 30L packs. In case you are wondering, it is within the acceptable “carry on” requirements for all but the most miserly of airlines. It easily fits into the overhead compartment and even fits under most airline seats when compressed to its 20L mode.

As for weight, it remains constant no matter which size and capacity mode is being invoked. Weighing in at 4.16 lb (1.9 kg)  it is heavy for a 20L pack and even weighty for a 30L pack. As such this ain’t a pack you want to take hiking or carry up hills on hot afternoons too often.

In terms of carrying, the pack is well fitted to suit an average man’s torso. The shoulder straps are adaptable and there is a harness hip belt which you may wish to use if you fully pack it at 30L. Note that pack also has an adaptable handle meaning that it can be carried like a suitcase too.

Main Compartment

nomatic travel bag

Where Nomatic packs really shine is in their organisational potential. Nomatic boasts that this pack has a “space for everything” and it’s not a bad assessment.

The main compartment pack opens up in a clamshell style which means you can lay it out flat and pack/unpack it like a suitcase – as opposed to the standard “top access” you get with backpacks. The main compartment has a generous amount of room for putting clothes, shoes or whatever else you can fit in there.

Below the main compartment are two zip mesh pockets which fit small bits and pieces such as chargers.

Then, there are four mesh pockets on the sides of the main compartment which you can pop other little bits and pieces into – the size perfectly accommodates a sunglasses case and by the way, the Nomatic Travel Pack actually comes with a free sunglasses case in case that swings it for you!

Other Compartments

Nomatic Travel Pack

One of the best features of this pack is the laptop compartment.

It is located on the reverse side of the inside side of the pack (the part that rests on your back ). When you zip open the clamshell to access the main compartment, the laptop case will fold down. The compartment opens and closes securely with a zip and comes with enough padding to keep your precious device safe from a few knocks. It will fit laptops up to 15” which is a bummer if you are one of those rare beasts who still uses a 17”.

So what else do we have? Well on the outer side of the pack the flap zips open to reveal 4 more mesh pockets, a bottom pocket, and then some inside pockets on the inside of the flap. I don’t know about you, but you can never have enough pockets in my opinion!

But that’s not it, there is also a small secret zipper pocket situated on the backside of the pack. The pocket is super hard to access but that is the whole point of it – it’s a secret compartment and therefore useful for hiding passports, credit cards and cash!

Quality and Longevity

Nomatic gear is not cheap so buyers have every right to expect high quality and some longevity.

The main material is tarpaulin which offers a good level of water resistance. It feels quite thick and hard-wearing (which does make the pack on the heavier side of things) but it is definitely not scuff proof and I can foresee the pack taking a few scratches after a few months of use.

The zips and zip lining are zoom zippers which are of a very high quality.

The other Nomatic packs we have owned are in great condition after years of use and we fully expect this one to perform just as well. In fact, Nomatic even offers a pretty strong Lifetime Warranty that guarantees against manufacturer defects.

Price and Value For Money

The Nomatic Travel Pack is $300. That is quite a lot for a 20L or a 30L pack.

Still, we do feel that the chunky price tag is justified. The Nomatic brand pride itself on making innovative, high-quality travel gear that offers heaps of awesome features.

Basically, if you feel you will make use of the pack’s features such as the clamshell opening, the extendability, the laptop compartment and all the little organisation pockets, then you will probably get your money’s worth.

If you will not make the most of these features then there are more cost-effective alternatives out there for you.

Also, keep in mind that this pack comes with a lifetime guarantee – and $300 is not really bad for a travel bag for life now is it?! I mean, you can’t beat a 10p Tesco bag for life in terms of value but they are somewhat lacking in features compared to the Nomatic!

nomatic travel pack

As we have seen, the Nomatic Travel pack is a unique extensible travel pack. It can be used as a 20L daypack or a 30L overnight or weekend bag . It is made from high-quality materials, has lots of storage options and even comes with a laptop compartment.

It is not a cheap travel pack and it is not ideal for everybody. Still, it has a very unique space in the travel gear-o-sphere and has earned itself a lot of fans… including us.

Looking for some accessories to match you’re new shiny bag? Have a look at the Nomatic wallet that fits perfectly in the secret pocket. Also, check out the Nomatic toiletries bag , it’s one of the best on the market and continues the company’s line of excellent travel products.

NOMATIC Travel Pack Review: Most Functional Travel Bag?

NOMATIC Travel Pack Review: Most Functional Travel Bag?

Last Updated on April 8, 2022 by eattalktraveljapan

If you want a real, in-depth review of the NOMATIC Travel Pack or one of NOMATIC’s other bags, this is the article of your dreams. I’ve now spent more than two years with the Travel Pack, use it on most days, and have explored two continents with it.

I’ve used it on the trains of Tokyo and Osaka, ventured into the sweltering heat of Bangkok and Singapore with it, and even used it in the ice cold winters of the US East Coast.

Read on to learn about how the NOMATIC Travel Pack has worked out over the last year. Also, they have released a new travel bag recently , which you may want to compare to the Travel Pack.

( Disclaimer:   We DID NOT receive this for free . We bought the NOMATIC Travel Pack ourselves during the Kickstarter campaign and Joshua has been using it for over a year. However, the links in this post are affiliate links so if you buy through the links we receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. )

Why the NOMATIC Travel Pack?

I was immediately drawn to the Travel Pack when I saw the Kickstarter campaign. Since I travel so much, I was looking for a backpack that was stylish, functional, weather-proof, and built to last. This is surprisingly hard to find…

I liked the minimal design and the attention to detail blew me away. It’s well organized with multiple compartments and pockets to store all your gear. The full-perimeter zippers and the material appeared to be high-quality.

But, I wondered if the actual product would be as good as it looked online…

(Spoiler: it is)

This review will focus on the NOMATIC Travel Pack, but NOMATIC has now successfully funded, manufactured, and delivered on multiple travel products with more in the works, so be sure to stop by their website to see the different travel bags available .

NOMATIC Travel Pack basics:

This bag has the best combination of quality, style, and function that I’ve seen in a travel backpack.

Price:  $299 ( Buy here )

So, what is the NOMATIC Travel Pack?

nomatic travel pack

The Travel Pack is meant for 3-day trips, while the Backpack is meant for daily use (However, I use the Travel Pack as a daily backpack, which I’ll discuss more below).

The two bags look very similar on the outside, but the Travel Pack is a little bigger because it has a separate laptop compartment and expands from 20L to 30L. On the inside, the Backpack has three interchangeable inserts that give you many options on how to use the space, while the Travel Pack has a mesh divider and compartment.

Personally, I chose the Travel Pack because I travel a lot and I like having the ability to carry heavy loads when on trips. Choosing the Travel Pack adds some bulk, but I don’t find it to be enough to be a problem.

Unique features

High-quality waterproof materials:.

The material of this bag really stood out to me. Pretty much every bag claims to use high-quality materials, but the Travel Pack actually delivered. The material is really thick and the recently updated YKK zippers are well sealed. I also really like the matte finish of the material.

NOMATIC Travel Pack

Extremely functional with multiple pockets and compartments:

Functionality is NOMATIC’s main claim and they have really gone above and beyond on this one. It’s almost obsessively functional with multiple zippers, pockets, and compartments to store virtually anything.

NOMATIC Travel Pack

Tuckable straps:

You can tuck the shoulder straps into the back to make the Travel Pack more like a briefcase. I’m not sure if I would use it as a briefcase replacement, but I’ve really come to appreciate this feature. When walking through crowded areas, it’s very helpful to be able to hold the side straps and tucking in the straps makes it easier to store under the front seat on airplanes and in other luggage compartments.

nomatic travel pack

Expansion from 20L to 30L:

One of my favorite features is the huge expansion capabilities. The extra space makes a huge difference when you’re packing to maximum capacity. I was also surprised by how well the expansion is integrated into the design. The Travel Pack is just as functional when zipped as when unzipped and the expansion zipper blends into the bag so well that you probably wouldn’t notice it if you weren’t looking for it.

NOMATIC Travel Pack

Two magnetic water bottle holders:

This is another cool feature. There is a holder on each side and each combines a mesh interior with a magnetic top and bottom. This allows the holder to blend into the side when not in use, but also stretch out when you want to add a bottle. Having one on each side is also helpful if you want to carry both a water bottle and an insulated thermos or something else.

NOMATIC Travel Pack

Easy access laptop storage:

The laptop compartment is completely separated from the rest of the bag with its own full perimeter zipper meant to make airport checkpoints easier. It also keeps your laptop near the back of the bag and provides extra cushioning.

nomatic travel pack

Cord pass-through easy access pocket:

There’s a small top pocket for things like a phone that you want to reach easily. It also features a small hole to pass through a cord if you want to use a portable charger.

NOMATIC Travel Pack

Easy access key holder:

There are multiple mesh pockets inside and the bottom one has a key ring attached to a retractable cord. You can easily reach your keys, unlock the door and put your keys back. I’ve found this to be really useful, especially with larger sets of keys.

Who is the NOMATIC Travel Pack for?

The Travel Pack and the other NOMATIC bags are for people who want a rugged, high-quality backpack and care about function and design.

All the bags have a minimal look to them and are only available in black. They are extremely functional and hold a lot of stuff without wasting space.

Who is the Travel Pack not for?

When researching this bag and comparing my experience with others, the main complaint I found was the style.

The material is thick, waterproof and made to hold it’s shape really well. But, that makes it boxier than some other backpacks, which some people don’t like.

So, if you want a smaller, lighter style of bag, the Travel Pack may not be right for you…

Downsides of using the Travel Pack daily

Rather than try to make the perfect backpack, NOMATIC made two slightly different bags that work in different situations.

The Travel Backpack is meant to be an everyday bag and the Travel Pack is meant for 1-3 day trips. I use the Travel Pack as both a travel bag and a daily backpack and while this works great for me, there are some disadvantages.

There isn’t a huge difference in size, but the expansion system does make the Travel Pack a little bulky for daily life. Since I travel so much this is a worthwhile trade-off for me, but if I didn’t, I’d strongly consider going with the Backpack instead.

Complexity:

The downside to all the pockets and compartments is that they complicate using the bag. If you forget where you put something there will be a lot of zipping, unzipping and searching in order to find it. I can see how the organizational system of the Backpack would be a lot more useful in daily life.

Will it last a year… or more?

nomatic travel pack

Like I mentioned in the intro, I’ve used the Travel Pack for more than a year now and have traveled with it A LOT. I’ve traveled around the US and Southeast Asia with it, plus, I’ve spent a lot of time in Japan with it.

(By the way, if you’re interested in Japan, be sure to check out our introduction ).

It’s great for carrying on airplanes and it can usually fit under the seat, even with both bottles inside. Once, when I had it expanded out and totally full it was too big to fit under the seat so I just put it in the overhead compartment.

Any problems?

For the most part, I’ve been amazed by how well it’s held up. The thick material is great for keeping out the rain and all the organizational features make it easy to carry electronics and daily essentials with me. The material doesn’t have any significant scuffs or scratches yet, despite heavy use.

Really the only issue I’ve had was basic condensation from extreme rain and humidity in Thailand. It was slightly damp in a few places after that and this was really heavy rain for an extended period of time. So,  I’d say it’s about 98% waterproof.

After about 2 years of heavy use I damaged the zipper (common with every backpack I’ve owned). However, the latest version of the Travel Pack has new, improved YKK zippers which are likely to prevent this.

NOMATIC Travel Pack

So, should you get the NOMATIC Travel Pack?

Hopefully, I’ve given you a good idea of what makes this bag unique.

For me, it’s the closest that I’ve found to the perfect travel bag. I love the design and appreciate the quality materials. But, I also travel a lot more than normal and bring a variety of electronics and daily essentials with me.

If you like the style and are willing to pay a little more for quality, then you’ll love the NOMATIC bags. They really deliver on the quality and functionality promised. There’s also a 30-day return policy if for some reason you don’t.

I’d recommend really comparing all their travel bags, though. The slight differences between them make it easy to choose the one perfect for your circumstances.

Where to buy it?

The best place to get the NOMATIC Travel Pack, Backpack or any of their other bags is through their website .

Not quite what you’re looking for?

Here’s our Complete Guide to the Best Digital Nomad Backpacks.

More about the NOMATIC Backpack 20L

20 pockets all designed with purpose.

This feature of the NOMATIC Backpack 20L is one of its best. It has over 20 pockets , all with a specific purpose! That’s a lot of pockets, but it’s all perfectly designed to keep your items safe and secure. Plus, it’s water-resistant and has RFID protection for extra security.

It’s like a modern-day Mary Poppins bag! But instead of a carpet bag, it’s a laptop bag. And instead of being able to pull out a bed or a lamp, you can just pull out whatever you need from one of the 20 pockets . It’s like a little bag-within-a-bag, but it’s all connected.

Pro Tip: Be sure to keep track of all the pockets and their specific purposes , so you can easily find whatever you need! And if you’re ever in a pinch, try looking in the front and side pockets first. They’re usually the most accessible.

NOMATIC 40L Travel Bag- Convertible Duffel/Backpack, Carry-on Size for Airplane

Strong exterior and Waterproof

The NOMATIC 20L bag has a strong exterior that will protect your laptop and other items from outside elements like rain and water splashes. We all know how important it is to keep our tech safe, so this bag is the perfect way to do it!

The science behind this is actually pretty simple. The bag is made with a special material that helps repel water and prevent it from entering the bag and damaging your items. It also has a special RFID shielding fabric that helps keep your valuable items safe from scanning.

Pro tip – If you’re using the bag in rainy weather, make sure you keep all the zippers closed tight so that no water can get inside. That way, your tech and other items will stay safe and dry no matter what!

YKK Zippers

The NOMATIC Backpack is equipped with YKK Zippers , which offer superior durability and security. It’s like having an extra layer of protection to make sure your belongings stay safe.

The YKK zipper works by utilizing a double-tooth design . This unique design creates a locking mechanism, where the top tooth is engaged and the bottom tooth is disengaged. This means that the zipper won’t accidentally open, so your stuff stays safe.

Pro Tip : When zipping up your backpack, always make sure to tuck the zipper pull into the pouch . This prevents any accidental openings and helps your backpack stay secure.

Patent Pending Strap Design – Brief Case to Backpack Transition Smoothly

With the patent-pending strap design feature, the NOMATIC Backpack – Water-Resistant RFID Laptop Bag 20L – Updated 2020 V2 makes it easy to transition from a briefcase to a backpack in a snap!

So, no more awkwardly switching bags while you’re on the go – this bag has you covered.

What’s even better? It also features an adjustable and detachable sternum strap for extra stability and comfort.

But how does this all work? Well, the straps are designed with a special locking mechanism to make sure your bag stays secure and in place. This locking mechanism simply snaps into place when you’re carrying it as a briefcase or a backpack. It’s so easy to use – and you won’t have to worry about it coming loose.

Pro Tip : Make sure to adjust the straps to your perfect fit for the most comfortable and secure experience.

Full Perimeter Zipper for Access from All Sides

The latest feature, the full perimeter zipper for access from all sides , makes it even easier to get things done quickly. With this feature, you can access any item in the bag from any side in a flash.

No more rummaging around in the bottom of the bag to find that one item, as the NOMATIC Backpack is designed with a zipper that wraps around the entire bag, allowing you to access any item quickly and easily

This makes it ideal for those on the go and always in a hurry.

Pro Tip: Make sure to close the zipper completely after accessing items to ensure that your items stay secure!

Review and Score

Our score: 85/100.

I have been on the lookout for a great bag and I’m happy to say that NOMATIC Backpack – Water-Resistant RFID Laptop Bag 20L fits all my needs.

It has enough room for everyday carry items, is extremely lightweight yet very sturdy, and is water-resistant with 20 pockets in total including an expandable laptop pouch which can also house 15-inch laptops easily.

Plus, it features RFID-blocking technology to keep credit cards and other sensitive information safe from prying eyes.

All of this combined makes it one of the best backpacks out there right now.

The customer reviews are overwhelmingly positive too – people appreciate its combination of style, quality and space which make travel or daily commute so much easier without compromising safety as well as organization requirements.

My score would be 85/100 because while its construction might not be perfect (there are people complaining about zippers), but overall it’s an outstanding digital nomad backpack.

NOMAX TANK BAG

Inspired by the hydration packs we use for backcountry skiing and mountain biking, the Nomax comes with a 2L hydration reservoir and tons of storage for all those little things you want to organize and access quickly.

Nomax Tank Bag (V3.0)

Mosko Moto Tank Bag Onyx/Orange - Preorder / NONE Nomax Tank Bag (V3.0)

Our Nomax Tank Bag gets major design updates for V3.0, including an additional expansion zipper, adding 2.5 liters of optional volume, upgraded backpack straps, an InReach pocket, and a lighter weight, recycled 630D material.

Inspired by the hydration packs we use for backcountry skiing and mountain biking, the Nomax comes with a 2L hydration reservoir, a stashable rain cover, and tons of storage for all those little things you  want to organize and access quickly . To top it off, the bag unclips from the bike quickly and transforms into a fully functional backpack for off-bike missions.

Updates to Version 3.0

  • Expansion zipper – adding 2.5 liters of optional volume
  • Lighter weight, recycled 630D material
  • Upgraded backpack straps
  • InReach pocket

After talking to hundreds of riders around the world, and combining their feedback with our personal wants and needs, we decided to design the Nomax's storage space differently than the traditional 'toaster' shape. Instead, we divided the space into six vertical layers, each with a specific purpose. We conducted research on the types of items that riders typically store in their tank bags and discovered that most of them were small. By using a vertical layout, we were able to maximize the use of space without increasing the height of the bag.

The top layer of the Nomax has three columns of MOLLE webbing made from die-cut Hypalon. These columns can be used to mount various items such as our rain-proof MOLLE Map Pocket, Navigator Cell Phone Pocket, or MOLLE-compatible multi-tool. You can customize the top layer of the Nomax to suit your individual travel needs with the help of MOLLE webbing.

Beneath the MOLLE webbing, the next layer is an expandable beavertail. The beavertail can be used to quickly store things like sunglasses, gloves, snacks, or even a small DSLR camera. If you decide to use it for your DSLR, we've placed webbing loops on the beavertail side bellows, allowing you to directly clip the D-rings on your camera case to the bag. Inside the beavertail, we've also included a pocket for an InReach or SPOT, and a gated clip to keep your GPS/camera/beacon lanyards secure, so nothing falls out if your bike takes a tumble.

The third layer zips back into your lap and is specifically designed to help you organize small items like charging cables, pens, change, batteries, earplugs, chapstick, passport, and bike documents. This layer includes six mesh pockets, three elastic cable holders, two pen holders, and a fleece-lined glasses pocket to keep everything in its place. No more tangled mess of miscellaneous items floating around in the bottom of your tank bag - now everything has a designated home.

The fourth layer is a large open compartment featuring plenty of space for bulkier items like spare gloves, wallet, CCW, and food. There are two large mesh pockets (one with sidewalls and one flat), which are available if you need them but compress out of the way if you don't. Also, for contact lens wearers, on the foam-reinforced sidewall, there's a removable lens case holder, which can be rotated to keep the cases vertical depending on the orientation of the bag.

Under the main compartment, is a long, flat pocket designed to hold a 2.5L hydration reservoir, which comes included with the Nomax. If you're traveling in a warmer climate or on a long-distance trip, you can move the weight of your drinking water from your back to the bike to help you stay hydrated without adding extra weight to your backpack. If you'd rather keep the Nomax as tight as possible to the bike or maximize space in the main compartment, you can remove the reservoir and store it elsewhere on the bike.

The sixth and final layer of the Nomax houses a quick-stash spot for two sewn-on, crushable backpack straps. Simply unclip the Nomax from the bike, pull out the backpack straps, and clip them to the D-rings at the bottom of the bag. The Nomax converts into a fully functioning hydration pack. The side straps, which normally connect the Nomax to the bike, now become your waist strap. We use these backpack straps on dual sport trips all the time, from morning hikes to running errands in town. It looks, feels, and functions like a normal backpack.

The Nomax includes a waterproof rain cover, with a welded-seam top panel and sealed seams on the side to keep your belongings dry in a heavy downpour. There's a stash spot for the rain cover on the top of the bag and a leash so it doesn't get lost. Also, hidden away in two of the zipper pulls, you’ll find a SIM card tool, a storage compartment, and a safety whistle for emergencies.

  • 2.0L Hydration reservoir w/ insulated hose
  • Beavertail stash spot
  • Easy on/off with the standard Mosko tank bag harness
  • 6 layers of vertical organization (features hidden inside!)
  • MOLLE expandability
  • External beacon pocket (inReach or Spot)
  • HHMS (hydration hose mgmt. system)
  • Fleece lined sunglasses pocket
  • Cable pass-through port (charging!)
  • D-rings for connecting backpack straps
  • Nomax Tank Bag
  • 2.0L Hydrapak reservoir
  • Easy on/off mounting harness
  • Two lower connection straps for mounting
  • Stashable, rain-proof cover
  • Four heavy-duty cable ties with metal closure for mounting
  • The Nomax expands & contracts as needed. If you prefer a tight-fitting tank bag with a low profile, remove the hydration reservoir and map pocket and cinch it down tight to the bike.
  • For more capacity, take full advantage of the beavertail.
  • View Installation Instructions PDF
  • View Nomax Footprint PDF
  • Due to the Nomax's long torso, it may not fit on smaller dual sport bikes.
  • We recommend rigging the Nomax as far forward as possible – it's not uncommon for the top of the bag to extend over the handlebars on some bikes.
  • Our universal mounting harness makes it easy to swap between other Mosko tank bags and is also interchangeable between bikes.

Customer Reviews

This is a great tank bag, very well thought out and functional with ample storage. This version 3 with the expansion zipper is a great addition for extra capacity, especially with the water bladder removed (or empty). I added a few mini-biners and soft zipper pulls to ease opening with rolling. The only thing I could possibly think of changing would be a specific zip pocket for a garage door opener remote. As much as I love my big GSA and it pains me to say this... I commute with it way more often than it get used to traverse the Himalayans.

User picture

My son (35) and I (70) just completed all Sections of the NoCal BDR using the NOMAX. Excellent product and will be a must-have piece of gear for future rides.

This tank bag is my favorite piece of adventure riding gear. It’s obvious every detail on it has been thought out and has a purpose. Some of my favorite features are the shoulder straps that turn the tank bag into a comfortable day pack! And I love the hydro pack, it’s a game changer. Sometimes you just need to spend the extra dollar on a quality product like this one! Stop thinking and buy it

Best price I could find on my bag. Shipping was way faster than expected. Love to support smaller companies and was very impressed with selection and service.
