Bali Travel Guide for First-Timers [Updated July 2023!]

We’ve created this updated Bali Travel Guide for First-Timers, building upon our previous blog post on “ What to Know Before Traveling to Bali for First Timers. Bali has so much to offer. It has something for everyone: breathtaking landscapes, stunning beaches, and rich cultural heritage.

As first-time visitors to Bali, having questions and uncertainties about local customs and etiquette is natural. With the latest information as of July 2023, this guide aims to provide you with all the essential information you need to ensure a smooth journey through this remarkable island.

Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Approximately IDR 15,000 to USD 1 (as of July 2023).

Language: Bahasa Indonesia. English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Visas Etc   (Updated with new July 2023 visa and entry requirements!) : Travelers from 92 countries can still obtain a Visa on Arrival (VOA) for a stay of up to 30 days, with an option for a one-time extension at the local immigration office in Kuta (for a fee). It’s important to note that eligibility for the VOA is based on your nationality (passport), not your country of origin. Here are some key details regarding the VOA and VEA:

• Visa on Arrival (VOA) costs IDR500,000 per person (applies to adults and children). There are two options: pay on arrival or apply and pay online from 14 days up to 48 hours before arrival.
• A passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of your visit is required.
• Vaccination certificates are not required for entry into Bali.
• Visa Exemption Arrangement (VEA) is free and only applicable to 10 specific countries, allowing a stay of up to 30 days.

Additionally, travelers need to fill in the e-declaration Customs form . After submitting the form, a QR code will be generated. Please remember to take a screenshot of the QR code because you will need to present it to customs officers. They will scan the QR code before allowing you to proceed.

From our recent experience, there’s no longer a physical entry card to fill out. It’s all about going through immigration and biometrics now. However, here’s the catch: we noticed a bit of chaos upon arrival. The Visa on Arrival (VOA) counters weren’t marked, and there were no signs to guide us. So, we advise asking about the VOA and getting it sorted before joining the immigration queue.

In this Bali travel guide for first timers, our pro tip is to fill in the e-declaration customs form on your phone instead of queuing up. Trust us; there’s usually a massive jam that can consume much time. We learned this the hard way during our immigration and customs journey, which took around 1.5 hours due to the long lines and confusion.

Vaccinations: No specific vaccinations are required to enter Bali, but it’s recommended to be up to date on routine vaccines. Consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

Religion: Bali is predominantly Hindu, while the rest of Indonesia is primarily Muslim. Balinese Hinduism has unique customs and traditions, heavily influencing the island’s culture.

Cultural Festivals: Nyepi, also known as the “Day of Silence,” is observed on the Saka new year according to the Balinese calendar. This sacred day is dedicated to self-reflection and spiritual introspection. The Balinese people adhere to specific restrictions from 6 am to 6 am the following day to honor the occasion.

These restrictions encompass refraining from lighting fires and keeping lights low, abstaining from work and entertainment, avoiding travel, and, for some individuals, practicing complete silence and fasting.

Best time to go: April to October

Bali has a tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season (April to October) and the wet season (November to March). The dry season is generally considered the best time to visit, with less rainfall and lower humidity. Temperatures range between 25°C to 35°C year-round.

HEALTH, SAFETY, AND LAWS

Bali is generally a safe destination for travelers. However, petty theft and pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded tourist areas. Keep an eye on your belongings, avoid displaying expensive items, and use hotel safes for valuable possessions.

Take basic safety precautions such as avoiding isolated or poorly lit areas at night, using reliable transportation, and being cautious with your belongings. If renting a scooter, wear a helmet, follow traffic rules, and be mindful of your surroundings.

Tap water in Bali is not safe for drinking. Stick to bottled water and avoid ice in drinks from street vendors. Be cautious with food from street stalls and choose reputable restaurants for hygienic meals.

Bali offers various culinary delights, from traditional Balinese cuisine to international dishes. The food hygiene standards are generally good in established restaurants and resorts. However, please be careful when eating street food and make sure it is freshly cooked and served hot. Grabfood is generally accessible throughout Bali.

Indonesia has strict drug laws, and possession of drugs can lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment or even the death penalty. Avoid involvement with drugs in any form.

Cash, Card, ATMs

The local currency in Bali is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Cash is widely accepted, especially in smaller establishments and regional markets. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, upscale restaurants, and larger establishments. ATMs are widely available in tourist areas, allowing you to withdraw cash in local currency.

Tipping is not expected in Bali, but it is appreciated for exceptional service. Some upscale restaurants and hotels may include a service charge, but it’s optional in smaller establishments.

Bargaining is expected in Bali, especially in markets and smaller shops. Feel free to negotiate the price, but remember to do so respectfully and with a friendly attitude.

Getting from the Airport to your Hotel

Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport, is the main gateway to Bali. Taxis are readily available at the airport, and it’s recommended to use official airport taxis or reputable transportation services. Negotiate the fare before getting in the cab, or consider booking a transfer in advance.

GrabCar / Taxi

This is one of the most important Bali travel guide for first timers! When it comes to using Grab in Bali, it’s to note that not all areas permit ride-sharing services. This includes airport pickups, Ubud, Canggu, and certain spots in Seminyak. So, if you’re planning a day trip via Grab, please check if the specific area allows for Grab pickups. If it doesn’t, booking a car for your day trip is better to ensure a reliable return.

While local taxis are available, bargaining can be challenging, especially during peak travel times or when it’s raining, and there’s a high influx of tourists.

Car / Scooter Rental

Renting a car or scooter is a popular option for exploring Bali independently. Ensure you have a valid driver’s license and familiarize yourself with local traffic rules. Be cautious when driving, especially on busy roads, and wear helmets if riding a scooter.

CULTURAL ETIQUETTE AND CUSTOMS IN MALAYSIA

Respect for Balinese Customs and Traditions

Bali is deeply rooted in its Hindu traditions and customs—respect Balinese culture by dressing modestly when visiting temples or participating in religious ceremonies. Cover your shoulders and wear a sarong around your waist. Avoid pointing with your feet or touching people’s heads; it is disrespectful.

Temple Etiquette

When entering temples, remove your shoes before stepping onto the temple grounds. Follow the instructions of the temple staff and maintain a respectful demeanor. Do not climb on sacred structures or disturb offerings.

Balinese Offerings

For Indian passport holders who want to travel to Bali, Indonesia provides a Visa-on-Arrival option. You may stay for up to 30 days with this visa, which is only for tourist-related activities. The Bali Visit Visa B211A is required if you intend to stay for a period of time longer than 30 days or for any other purpose except tourism.

Indian nationals are eligible to apply for a variety of visas to Bali, such as Visa-on-Arrival, longer-stay tourist visas, multiple entry visas, or visas for employment. The conditions and duration of each visa for a visit to Indonesia vary.

For Indian citizens traveling to Bali as tourists, there is a Visa-on-Arrival (B213) option. After entering Indonesia, you can obtain this visa at the airport immigration counters. Alternatively, you can submit an application for it at the Indonesian embassy in India 14 days before to your departure for Bali. On a tourist visa in Indonesia, you cannot work or earn money. The tourist visa, however, is acceptable for conferences, meetings, shopping, and visiting family and friends.

The Best Bali Guide (2023)

Bali is an oasis in Indonesia’s heart, a paradise for tourists with its beautiful scenery, vibrant culture and warm hospitality. The island is a mosaic of green vegetation, ancient temples and fine beaches that seduce the soul. This is where I offer advice to all of my friends and family who are planning a trip to Bali. These are my top tips for planning your Bali trip.

When traveling to Bali, try and exchange cash into Rupiah beforehand. I suggest exchanging 500,000 Rupiah per person for the Visa on Arrival (VOA) and 1,000,000 Rupiah for the first day. This should cover transportation and meals until you find a currency exchange or an ATM.

Visa on Arrival (VOA)

For visitors from Australia, Bali provides a Visa on Arrival (VOA) that enables them to stay for up to 30 days. The VOA is a non-extendable, single-entry visa. You may need to think about alternative visa possibilities, though, if you intend to remain longer or participate in activities other than tourism. The VOA desk will be the first desk you line up for when you get to Denpasar airport.

Online Declaration

Indonesia has put in a lot of effort to improve the tourist experience with new technologies since the COVID-19 pandemic. Which is shown by the development of the Online Declaration . To make your Indonesian adventure smoother, complete the online declaration before you leave and take a screenshot of the QR code with your phone. You will need this when passing the third and final checkpoint at Denpasar airport.

Bali Driver Recommendations

Bali is a destination that is best explored at your own pace, and hiring a local driver can enhance your experience. A knowledgeable driver can take you to both popular attractions and hidden gems. An experienced driver can provide insights into Bali’s culture, traditions, and history. When hiring a driver in Bali, it’s important to choose someone with extensive local knowledge.

I highly recommend Kadek Artana as a driver and tour guide in Bali. He has extensive knowledge of Balinese culture and is a local. Unlike many other drivers who are from other parts of Indonesia. He taught me a lot about Bali during my trip. You can contact Kadek via his  website  or  Facebook page  via Messenger.

Taxi’s

The best way to get around Bali is in a legitimate Blue Bird Taxi, which are regulated by the government. You can tell the difference between real and fake taxis by looking for their registration on the rear quarter panel. However, some fake driver have these registration stickers on the outside of their car. Look for an ID inside the cab, a meter, and a fare details sticker on the door. I recommend using the Blue Bird Taxi app, as it makes ordering a taxi hassle free. Use the app first until you get familiar with Blue Bird Taxi’s before hailing a taxi off the street.

Currency Exchange in Bali

When visiting Bali, there are several options for currency exchange, including airports, hotels, banks, and authorised money changers. While convenient, airports and hotels may not offer the best exchange rates. It’s crucial to choose reputable authorised money changers to avoid scams, rather than opting for street money changers that may offer seemingly attractive rates. Authorised money changers will usually be located in an air conditioned office and ask for ID. Always count your money carefully and use a currency converter app if in doubt. ATMs are widely available in Bali and accept international credit and debit cards, but be aware of potential withdrawal fees. Inform your bank of your travel dates to avoid any issues.

Kondisi Tour:  Minimal pemesanan tour adalah 2 orang dan seperti yang telah kami sampaikan sebelumnya, semua layanan tour kami bersifat private dimana perjalanan anda tidak akan kami gabung dengan kelompok tour lainnya.

Harga Termasuk:  Semua harga tour sudah termasuk hotel (terkecuali paket tanpa hotel), tiket masuk tempat wisata, makan siang dan malam sesuai program, ac transport dan driver.

Tidak Termasuk:  Sedangkan yang tidak termasuk dalam harga paket antara lain tiket pesawat, travel insurance, pengeluaran pribadi serta aktivitas opsional seperti Watersport di Bali atau menonton tarian Bali.

Transportasi:  Standar transportasi yang kami gunakan adalah Toyota Avanza untuk maksimal 5 orang penumpang, sedangkan lebih dari itu akan disesuaikan.

Hotel:  Pilihan hotel yang digunakan dalam pilihan Tour Termasuk Hotel adalah Hotel Kamar Standar Bintang 3 di area Kuta.

Durasi Tour:  Durasi tour adalah hingga selesai program atau maksimal sesuai yang tertera pada jadwal tour.

Itinerary Tour: Itinerary atau jadwal tour bersifat mengikat.

Pemesanan:  Pemesanan paket tour wajib membayar deposit sebesar 50% dari total tagihan.

Pembatalan:  Pembatalan layanan dengan alasan apapun akan menyebabkan pembayaran yang telah dilakukan dianggap hangus.

Welcome to Bali!!

Land between 9am & 4pm local time – there will be 3 transfers set up from the airport to our first hotel in Ubud. Tonight we’ll get together and go out for a fun dinner with the whole group. We’re starting in a foodie’s paradise so dinner is going to be amazing tonight!

Welcome to Bali – after a delicious breakfast at the hotel were starting off running with an action packed day in Bali!

We’re off on a tour of Bali today that includes famous places like the Sacred Monkey Forest. a Luwak Coffee Plantation, the stunning Ulun Dan Bertan Temple & More! Lunch is included on our tour today too!

Today we’re getting up early to take photos at the many instagramable swings overlooking Rice Terraces. Afterwards we’ll venture over to the Tegalang Rice Terrace then after a busy morning we’ll relax & have lunch** at a Day Club with a spectacular view of Tegunungan waterfall. Bring your swim suit, so you can enjoy the pool and go down to swim in the waterfall!

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Tour around Bali

*Note #1: Rachel highly recommends packing YOUR OWN dress for today so your photos turn out how you imagine them. The dresses are beautiful and they have a variety of sizes and colors but they may not have exactly what you want. Several of the swing places do offer both dress rentals & photographers, both are at your own expense. There are changing rooms at the swings.

**Lunch plus a drink is included, all extra drinks are on you!

Today were off to Nusa Pendia! Be sure to pack your bathing suit, sunscreen & camera because the views are endless & the sun is strong!

We’re taking a private boat out in the morning and heading to one of the most famous spots in Bali – to go snorkeling with Manta Rays!

After a delicious lunch we’ll hop off the boat and go explore the island. This island has SO much to offer.  We’ll visit the iconic Kelingking Beach view point as well as many other stops – we’ll enjoy the full day until sunset.

Overnight in Ubud

Pack your bags – Its waterfall day and afterwards we’re headed to Canggu!

After breakfast we’re going on a waterfall tour of the most famous ones in Bali we’ll start with Tukad Cepung Waterfall then head to the Tibumana Waterfall, Kanto Lampo Waterfall & the Elephant Cave.

In the afternoon we’ll check into our accommodations in Canggu. If you’re feeling sore after a fun day of adventure – there are several amazing Thai massage places right near our hotel!

Overnight in Canggu

Today is a free day! Its a great day to relax by the pool, go swimming at the beach, or book a Thai massage at one of the many locations in Canggu. If you are looking for more adventure, join Rachel on the optional ATV & Whitewater Tour below!

Optional: Looking for some more adventure? Come on a white water rafting & ATV riding adventure with Rachel! Adrenaline junkies will thrill to this adventure combo: white-water rafting the Ayung River and roaring through Bali’s lush countryside on an ATV. Discover hidden waterfalls, cool off in the refreshing waters, and whizz over bumps with the help of your rafting guide. After a buffet lunch, don helmet and boots to ride around the rice paddies with a guide.

Lets hit up the local beach club! We’ll reserve a table at one of the beach clubs and enjoy a day of relaxation with the pool on one side and the beach on the other. The clubs open at 10am but you can stay as late as you want!

Today is up to you – free time to do anything in Southern Bali that interests you. Interested in taking a surf lesson? A yoga class? See the famous Tanah Lot temple? Go for it! Book a balinese massage, enjoy the hotel pool, on a foodie tour, white water rafting or head to one of the amazing beach clubs.  You could also do things like visit the Uluwatu temple today if thats on your list! Theres a ton to explore and do for everyone.

Tonight we’ll get back together as a group and enjoy one last meal together & toast to an amazing week in Bali!

If you’re headed to the airport today you’ll be on one of three shared transfers back to the airport today. Hug all your new travel friends..its not good bye, its cya later! Be sure to check that your flight leaves between 9am & 5pm on October 2nd for the shared airport transfer!

Note: Don’t worry if you need to leave earlier or later then the shared transfers, we can set up a transfer for you at your own expense.

Yes, for this trip you will need travel insurance for this trip. This protects you & your purchase incase something happens before or during the trip that prohibits you from coming or staying through the whole trip.

This trip does not include travel insurance & should be purchased separately.

The minimum age is 21. The majority of the girls on the group trips are in their 20s & 30s. The biggest thing is mentality, being willing to be around girls of all ages, and willing to participate in all the activities.

The majority of my community is in their 20s and 30s, there isn’t a “too old” age but 25-35 is typical. That doesn’t mean that being 39 or 43 should stop you from joining us. As long as you’re open minded to enjoying a trip with all ages, down to have A LOT of fun, and understand these are very active trips then you’re good!

A good level of fitness is very essential to this trip.

There are many physical activities each day that require the entire group to stay together & complete as a group. If you have knee issues that prevent you from walking for long periods or tough times going up inclines or going hiking then this trip may not be right for you. We’re going to have A LOT of fun but we’re also going to be very active for the whole trip.

Its highly encouraged to know how to swim for this Bali trip. As you can see on the itinerary we will be on the water quite a bit. Life Jackets will be offered on the snorkeling trip but not at the beaches.

I would recommend it! I will be certified so we can dive in Bali. You don’t have to be, snorkeling is fantastic in Bali. If you’ve ever wanted to dive, this is a great excuse to get certified as the diving in Bali is top notch.

Once the trip is confirmed with 8 spots booked, the 25% deposit is non-refundable. Additional payments over the 25% are refundable until we are 60 days out from the trip.

At the 60 day mark all payments are due and the trip is 100% non-refundable.

If you need to cancel your spot prior to 60 days before the trip starts, there is a $100 cancelation fee and the remainder can be used on a future Adventuring for Life trip.

If you cancel 1-59 days prior to the trip, it is 100% non-refundable.

Travel Insurance is highly recommended, especially for ALL International Trips, to protect you in case you do have to cancel at any point.

Definitely! Prior to the trip commencing, a questionnaire will be sent out – if you have a roommate preference please write this in the box provided.

No flights are not included. People come from everywhere for this trip so we are unable to include international flights. Please read the itinerary carefully and book yourself onto flights that arrive and depart on appropriate dates from the right airport!

No! Anyone from anywhere can come on a trip, we’ve had girls from England, Germany, Canada and more! You could be the first girl from your country to come with us, we would love that.

So this is a loaded question with lots of things to think about.

How much money is going to depend on how fancy of meals you go out to (outside whats on the itinerary) and how much you spend on souvenir shopping. Another component of this is Tipping. While tipping may not be customary in your country – it is apart of the culture in Bali.

We recommend at least $200 USD for the week for meals.

We would also recommend approximately 300,000 IDR ($20 USD) for tipping throughout the trip.

For those that dont want to bother with tipping or dont know exactly who to type & how much – Rachel may offer an optional tipping kitty at the start of the trip that you can join to take the stress of over tipping / under tipping out of the trip. Participation in this kitty is at your own discretion, and you are welcome to manage your own tipping separately if you prefer.

Outside those factors – keep in mind things like shopping, any partying/drinking, any extra activities you might go book & other extras like massages, flower baths, etc are all things to add into your extra money to bring as well. All of this is relatively inexpensive in Bali but still something to keep in mind!

• Group Size: Minimum is 8 people, max 18.
• Fitness level: Most days are very busy, this is an action packed trip so you should be relatively fit and be able to walk 10k+ steps a day.
• Meals: 8 Breakfasts, 4 Lunches, & 2 Dinners are included.
• Accomodation: 3 or 4 Star Hotel - Double Occupancy with 2 beds in each room. You can book a solo room if you prefer more space!
