Switzerland FAQ's

Switzerland has a lot to be proud of. The country boasts some of the world's most famous inventions - they created Velcro, cellophane, the Swiss Army Knife, absinthe, the potato peeler, Helvetica font, LSD, muesli, edible chocolate gold, and milk chocolate to name a few. Switzerland is also famous for its beautiful nature and landscape, watchmaking, chocolate, cheese, banks, lakes, and more. One of the best things about Switzerland is all the beautiful nature. Many tourists flock to Switzerland each year just to enjoy the Alps. It's hard to miss them as they make up about 65% of Switzerland. They are one of the world's most beautiful mountain ranges. Watches - The watchmaking industry in this country produces watches that are not only technologically advanced but aesthetically appealing as well. Some of the more recognized brands from Switzerland include Rolex, Omega, Tag Heuer and Rado. Almost everyone loves Swiss chocolate and cheese, it`s delicious and two of the most obvious products when you think of Switzerland. They offer so many different varieties of each. If you love chocolate and cheese, you`re in luck here! From a business point of view, Switzerland has a great reputation for its banks. It`s not uncommon for foreign individuals to put a lot of their money into Swiss banks simply because the economy is so stable and Switzerland is considered to be one of the world`s best countries to do your banking with. They are also popular for their neutrality. If you have ever hear the phrase, `I`m Switzerland` when getting into a debate, it`s because of Switzerland`s reputation for their no-interference policy. Basically they commonly take neutral stance when other countries have issues with one another. Switzerland also has become known for is their trains, they have several of them that allow tourists and locals alike to easily get from one destination to another. The country makes traveling by train seamless and quick, but even better, is the incredible scenery you see when traveling by this means of transportation. Another famous attribute in Switzerland is the amazing lakes. There are so many different lakes from large to small and they are all absolutely striking with the mountains scattered behind them as a backdrop. Just the scenery in general, no matter where you travel in this country is incredible. This brings us to the small towns and villages tucked away in all corners of Switzerland. Traditional Swiss Houses, beautiful wooden chalets with pointy tops and flowers in their windowsills are scattered all throughout the winding side streets and back roads. And they look just like you see them in the pictures.

Switzerland just may be the most beautiful country in Europe. There's something about the way the jagged mountains glistens making a picture-perfect backdrop almost everywhere you go. The natural scenery is incredible and the efficient transportation makes it so easy to get around discovering it all. Every town and city in Switzerland offers it`s own unique character. Central Switzerland is jammed packed with history and culture and the pristine landscapes, gleaming lakes and towering mountaintops are just begging to be explore. This is where you'll find Lucerne , a town straight out of a fairy tale with a magical ambiance that radiates through this town. Brunnen , also located in central Switzerland, is a popular vacation resort situated on the shores of Lake Lucerne boasting breathtaking views. This is an ideal starting point for excursions in the central region of Switzerland. Also worth mentioning in this area of the country is the dramatically positioned Burgenstock, considered to be the most luxurious resort town of the region, along with Vitznau and Weggis . The Lake Geneva Region is situated in the Southwest corner of Switzerland encompassing the cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais. Formed by the Rhone, Lac Leman is the largest lake in central Europe. It consists of the Grand Lac to the east and the Petit Lac to the west and covers 225 sq miles; more than half belongs to Switzerland, the rest to France. Here you will discover the beautiful towns of Geneva , Lausanne , Montreux , and Vevey . Northern Switzerland is a region that stretches along the Rhine River and mainly consists of the greater Zurich Area and the great Basel area. If culture and history are your interest, this is a fabulous region for you. You`ll want to be sure to explore the hippest destination, Zurich that is regularly recognized as one of the world`s most livable cities. Also located in this region is the medieval city of Basel the ancient town of St. Gallen , and the well-preserved town of Schaffhausen . The Bernese Oberland Region is an admired and beautiful region south of the Swiss capital of Bern. This Swiss winter wonderland is also a summer playground. In a small area, you'll find a very diversified landscape where the beautiful towns of Interlaken , Grindelwald , and Wengen are located. With its natural beauty and diverse landscape, the Valais , located in a remote corner of southern Switzerland, is a land of contrasts. Here, you'll find beautiful glaciers in the valley along the Rhone, majestic four-thousand-meter-high peaks in the mountains, sprawling vineyards, and unspoiled side valleys. Both Zermatt , and Saas Fee are located in this region of the country. The canton of Ticino is the southernmost canton in Switzerland, bordering Italy. It is Italian-speaking (the only canton with Italian as the sole official language!) with a Mediterranean vibe. This region offers palm trees, beautiful beaches and blue waters. Similar to Italy, You'll also find charming alleyways, piazzas, churches and a mixture of city and country with something for everyone! The alpine canton of Graubundun is the largest and most easterly canton of Switzerland offering a lot of excitement for every taste. High mountain peaks, remote valleys, small mountain villages - this region is full of adventures and excitement. Chur , the capital of Graubunden, is the gateway to the alpine and loaded with history. Davos and St. Moritz are two other towns you won`t want to miss while visiting this part of the country. The Swiss Mittelland or the Swiss Plateau is one of the three major landscapes in Switzerland alongside the Jura Mountains and the Swiss Alps. At the heart of this central region lies Bern, the laid-back city that few realize is Switzerland's capital. You'll find this entire region offers beautiful countryside with charming villages and plenty of history and cultural attractions to be explored.

The best time to visit Switzerland is during the shoulder seasons, as in April to June and September to October. You can enjoy fewer crowds, mild weather, and lower prices. In fact, the mountain resort towns are almost completely dead. In the spring and fall, you might also get the chance to witness cattle processions that wind through alpine villages. Tourists descend into Switzerland in the summer months to soak up the sunshine and wildflowers that are blooming in the countryside. The snow also typically thaws so you`ll have the chance to hike trails that are often covered. Most mountain resorts open up again but at much higher prices. Winter brings tourist with the love of snow sports. Prices at the slopes don`t typically drop this time of year, but if you are visiting anywhere else in the country you will typically save on hotels and get to enjoy a winter wonderland. For more information on when to go, check out Best Time to Visit Switzerland .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

By Car: Public transport in Switzerland is fantastic, but a car has its advantages: You can save time reaching smaller villages and experience the thrill of winding up and down an Alpine pass, stopping for photos or picnics whenever you like. Switzerland`s roads are generally excellent and marked by clear. Drivers are well trained. You may only need a rubber bone when driving sharply curving, narrow, steep mountain roads, with impatient locals at your rear; or in cities, where trams and bicycles seem to whoosh into streets out of nowhere. One more note of caution: You`ll never want to drive into the mountains if there`s any chance of snow unless you have proper winter tires or chains. In some areas, chains are required, which will be indicated by a blue road sign with a picture of a tire in chains; the same sign with a red slash tells you when you exit that zone. Attempting to drive down an icy mountain with summer tires can be incredibly dangerous (and you may not be covered by insurance). Most North American rental agencies have offices in the major communities of Switzerland. You`ll save a fair amount of money if you make these arrangements before departing for Europe. You`ll also save a lot of money if you can drive a stick shift rather than an automatic. To rent a car in Switzerland, you generally must be at least 20 years old; if you are not yet 25 years old, plan to pay a higher rate. Your North American driver`s license is all that is needed, but you’ll need an international driver`s license if you drive into neighboring countries. Those are fairly inexpensive and can be obtained at your AAA office before departing. For more information, check out Driving in Switzerland . By Train: Train travel is by far the best way to travel in Switzerland; it’s economical and popular with both locals and tourists. The stations are clean and equipped with a variety of services, while the trains themselves are punctual, equally clean and comfortable. Although smoking is allowed in many public places in Switzerland, the trains are smoke-free. Unless you have extremely unusual circumstances that require private vehicles, get on the train and experience life as the locals do. You`ll be exposed to spectacular scenery and a way of life for most Europeans. Two of the world`s most scenic train routes are the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express , which cross through the rugged mountain landscapes, offering up a vision of Switzerland that just can`t be found elsewhere. This is where you might want to splurge and buy seats in the observation cars for unobstructed view of the Alps. First-class cars are slightly more spacious and provide a better view on the upper level, but second-class tickets will save you quite a bit of money. If you’re traveling with family, children under 16 travel for free in the company of an adult, but be sure to purchase the family tickets. The best investment any independent traveler to Switzerland can make is the Swiss Pass. In addition to train travel all over the country, this valuable pass includes intercity bus routes, ferry boats on many lakes, tour boats on many rivers and admission to multiple museums around the country. Discounts are offered on select cog railways and funiculars, as well as some special events and festivals.

The currency of Switzerland is the Swiss franc, usually indicated as CHF or SFr. While Switzerland is not part of the European Union and thus is not obliged to convert to the Euro, many prices are nonetheless indicated in euros so that visitors may compare prices. Euros are accepted in many places, but you will most likely receive francs in return. US dollars are not accepted.

Switzerland is the world’s only country where there are four national languages. These include French, Rumantsch, German and Italian. English may be spoken at your hotel and in the tourist areas, but not everywhere. We suggest you get a good English-German guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

Matterhorn:

World famous and the symbol for Switzerland, this mountain is the most photographed in the world. It faces the four cardinal directions and is the tenth highest mountain in Switzerland, but because it has a pyramid shape it is very challenging to climb. The first ascent was in 1865 and cost the lives of 4 out of 7 alpinists. It gets its German name from the words matte meaning meadow and horn meaning peak.

This village is like no other. It lies at the foot of what is probably the world’s most famous mountain. It also is located in an enormous hiking and ski region, making it a great vacation spot, even in the summer. This is a car-free zone vacation spot, making it possible to preserve its historical features as well.

Switzerland ms3

As the capital of Switzerland it has managed to retain its historic features. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It features 4 miles/6 km of arcades, or as the locals like to call it ‘Lauben,’ making it the longest weather-sheltered shopping in Europe. They also hold the seat of Switzerland’s government, many festivals, a bear park, and beautiful historic buildings that line the streets.

Switzerland ms4

This gateway to central Switzerland sits on Lake Lucerne and has a view of the mountain from wherever you are. Aside from the view it has the Chapel Bridge which is one of Europe’s oldest wooden bridges. A tourist favourite is to visit its souvenir and watch shops, which Switzerland is known for.

Destination Must-Do's

Switzerland md1

Swiss Chocolate:

It is only expected that the country that created chocolate is the country that consumes the most chocolate as well. It was created by adding milk to chocolate to try to reduce the cost and make it more palatable, which lead to milk chocolate. Switzerland now has over seven major chocolate companies. The best part is if you are a chocolate lover you can tour these companies and try their many different chocolates.

Switzerland md2

Swiss fondue:

Swiss fondue was created by local villagers with limited access to fresh foods in the winter. They discovered that if you heated the aged cheese with wines, garlic, and herbs then dipped your stale bread it would soften in the flavourful cheese mixture. Families would cook together in one pot and eat by the warm fire, becoming a Swiss winter tradition over time known as fondue.

Switzerland md3

GoldenPass:

This train ride is like a day vacation. You experience two languages, three regions, and eight lakes. The company focuses on journey and comfort not just transportation. It has seven different lines you can choose from, with the most famous being the panoramic that has panoramic windows that allow you to be one with the landscape. The other is the chocolate train which is a first class trip that lets you experience the production of famous Swiss cheese, the creation of Swiss chocolate, and a chance to see its magnificent castle.

Switzerland md4

Glacier Express:

This may be the slowest express train in the world, but for a reason. There is so much to experience on this journey that they slow it down for you. It takes you from Zermatt to St. Moritz. The train ride is an eight-hour panoramic journey. You travel into the Alps, go through 91 tunnels, and 291 bridges.

The currency is the Euro in almost all of Europe. In Switzerland, the Swiss Franc is used (CHF). Your personal bank card may work at local ATM machines in the destination you are travelling to and would dispense local currency. Please contact your bank to determine if this option is available.

You're in for a treat as you truly savour the local flavours of the Alpine region. In Austria, look for the beef soup -- Rindsuppe -- a clear soup with gold colour that is as tasty as it looks! The Tafelspitz is beef boiled in broth, often served with an apple and horseradish sauce. It's one of Austria's most savoury dishes.

Come to Switzerland to ski and find your soul

Perhaps it comes from the country’s history of remaining neutral, and its famous Red Cross banner, created by inverting the colours of its national flag – but civic responsibility plays a significant part in daily life in Switzerland. Community involvement is highly valued. The Swiss appreciate nature and spend a lot of time outdoors. There are few things that feel healthier for the soul than spending a day in nature, and then spending time together over a meal and good conversation – this is one of the best experiences the Swiss take part in, and offer to travelers.

Old town of Bern, capital of Switzerland, with Swiss alps peaks in the background glowing reddish during an autumn sunset

The Culture

A traditional pastoral culture exists across the country, and folk art, decorative traditional costumes, and traditional music still rings high in the mountains. The alphorn, a trumpet-like instrument, as well as yodeling, and the accordion are still popular. The culture of Switzerland revolves heavily around its mountains.

What is the visiting etiquette in Switzerland?

Being punctual is a value ingrained in Swiss culture, just think of all the Swiss watches! From arriving on time for social visits, to the proficient train system, the Swiss take pride in being punctual, precise, and efficient. Keep this in mind if you have made dinner reservations, or booked a tour, be sure to arrive on time, if not early. When dining in a restaurant, it is not okay to flag down staff with a wave of your hand. Be sure to politely address them using your voice when they pass by.

In Switzerland, greeting one another with a handshake and exchange of names is common, less prevalent are embraces or physical touch, such as a pat on the back. When socializing, crossing arms or putting hands in your pockets can come across as impolite. While conversing with the Swiss, keep in mind they may lean more reserved, so consider avoiding personal questions, asking about family, or politics.

What is Switzerland best known for?

Early mountaineering and publicized ascents of the Matterhorn mountain led to visitors flocking to explore the alpine meadows, and lakes of Switzerland. Mountain culture has since been at the forefront of life for the Swiss. Locals and travellers alike continue to savour the unspoilt mountain scenery and fresh air.

When exploring the mountains and woodlands, travellers will notice the Swiss affinity for respecting their natural heritage. There is a passion for protecting the beauty in national parks and promoting biodiversity, with the belief that nature contributes to human well-being. Be sure not to litter, always take your trash with you and dispose of it later.

What are some Swiss traditions?

Tied into the landscapes of the Alps, folk music has deep roots in the alpine culture of the Swiss mountains. A traditional wooden wind instrument, the alphorn, was once used by Swiss shepherds to call the cows from the pasture. Today it is a symbol of Switzerland and has won the hearts of its audience. Grand appearances of alphorn blowers and yodel choirs happen every three years at the Swiss Yodeling Festival.

Eating cheese fondue with friends is a ubiquitous Swiss tradition, especially in the winter months. Just no double dipping, dipping while someone else is dipping, or dropping your bread in the pot! And don’t forget, drinking white wine while indulging might be the most important rule. They say water will cause the cheese to solidify, while drinking wine will supposedly aid with digestion. At the end of the pot, be sure to let the remaining cheese bubble away to harden and scrape it off the bottom to enjoy.

What are Swiss people like socially?

Swiss people may initially come across as more reserved, but in time if a friendship emerges, they will tend to express themselves more. While walking through Swiss villages, rural areas or hiking, it is common to make eye contact and exchange a polite greeting such as a friendly nod or hello. However, in Switzerland, an extended chat with strangers is not common, so don’t expect locals to willingly engage with visitors. The topic of weather forecasts is common during brief chats, given the dramatic temperature changes known in Switzerland.  If a conversation does start, the Swiss prefer discretion and privacy, so don’t linger too long. Do actively listen and politely wait your turn to speak, as the Swiss feel it is rude to interrupt.

What language do the Swiss speak?

A linguistically diverse country, the official languages of Switzerland are German, French, Italian and Romansh. While most people speak German or Swiss German, about two-thirds of the population is able to speak some English. Travelling, you will frequently find English is most commonly spoken in the major cities, including Zurich, Geneva, and Basel. Outside of the big cities, do not assume everyone can speak each other’s language, as it is not uncommon to find people speaking different languages on two sides of a  canton  region in Switzerland.

The Best Time to Visit

Switzerland is a prime destination for both summer and winter trips. Imagine waking up to the sound of cowbells and looking out in the morning at views of majestic mountain ranges and shimmering blue lakes. Switzerland has an extensive network of public transport, which will take you to all remote areas. Any time of year you’ll find alpine adventures abound. Summer is the perfect time to be anywhere in the country, when hiking is popular, the weather is temperate, and not too hot.

If you prefer a white look outside the window with snowy landscapes, winter is a joyful wonderland and there are lots of snowfalls from mid December until mid-April. Come in January and February for guaranteed perfect snow conditions. It’s a haven for skiers with numerous ski resorts to choose from. Davos/Klosters together is one of the largest and highest ski resorts in Europe. Davos is home to some sophisticated and upscale hotels and restaurants like the AlpenGold Hotel and Hotel Fluela. Davos, like most ski resorts across the country, comes complete with wellness centres and opportunities for post-exercise activities like relaxing in your best cozy clothes, or to head out for a fancy dinner.

When is Switzerland’s peak tourist season?

The summer months of June to September are busiest with travellers seeking ideal weather for hiking, biking and exploring. You’ll find there are many festivals and holiday celebrations worth checking out during the summer.

You will find fewer crowds during the shoulder season of April to June and late September to mid November. These months are not ideal hiking months, but great for city visits. As crowds subside in the fall, along with cooler temperatures, this is a great time to explore Switzerland as most village businesses are still open and fall foliage begins to appear.

Which is the most affordable time to visit Switzerland?

The lowest rates for flights and accommodation can be found February to May. The exception to this is the Alps during ski season, which are sought-after and fetch high rates. While weather during these months can be colder, packing accordingly will still ensure an excellent trip. Hiking is not widely available during the winter or early spring, due to trail maintenance. Accommodation rates will also generally be lower during the shoulder seasons of April to June and late September to mid October.

How long should I plan to visit Switzerland?

If you are interested in visiting the highlights of Switzerland, and most interested in city exploring, look to spend 7-10 days. This gives time for train travel between cities, and exploring each location for a couple days. If you are wanting to add in some hiking too, consider a trip length of 10-14 days to allow transport time for visiting more remote locations.

When is the ideal time to visit Switzerland?

Summer’s temperate weather is an ideal time for hiking anywhere in Switzerland, from the iconic Matterhorn to the hidden gems in Swiss National Park. Nearly half the population of Switzerland goes for a hike on a regular basis, making hiking Switzerland’s favourite sporting activity. There are over 40,000 miles (65,000 kilometers) of waymarked trails stretching to each corner of the country waiting for you to explore them. Switzerland is known for its variable weather, especially in the Swiss Alps where it can be harsh, switching from warm sun to cold wind quickly. When packing to hike, selecting layers including a waterproof shell and a packable down jacket is important. Bringing sturdy hiking shoes with a treaded sole and up to date maps is also essential.

If looking to do a ski vacation, from mid December to mid April, plan to visit one of the numerous Swiss resorts. There are over 185 miles (300 kilometers) of ski runs to be found at Davos Klosters. For those interested in visiting the historical home of the Winter Olympics, St. Moritz is a must visit, nestled in the Engadin valley. The ski jump and slopes are frequently the sites of world ski events, and those of all skiing levels and abilities will feel comfortable here. Also check out the skating rinks, tobogganing, Nordic skiing, and bobsledding available. The best snow can be found in January and February.

What do you need to hike in Switzerland?

Switzerland is known for its variable weather, especially in the Swiss Alps where it can be harsh, switching from warm sun to cold wind quickly. In addition to packing for a typical trip, packing layers including a waterproof shell and a packable down jacket is important. Bringing sturdy hiking shoes with a treaded sole and up-to-date maps is also essential.

Is travelling by rail easy in Switzerland?

The rail network in Switzerland is extensive and reliable, known as the most dense public transportation network on the planet. Take the Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt, where you’ll travel along one of the most famous railways in the world navigating 291 bridges and 91 tunnels. Also consider the  Grand Train Tour of Switzerland , which provides corner-to-corner highlights of Switzerland over a roughly 780-mile (1,280 kilometres) train ride.

Do they speak English in Switzerland?

The official languages of Switzerland are German, French, Italian and Romansh. While most people speak German or Swiss German, about two-thirds of the population is able to speak in English. English is more commonly spoken in major cities, including Zurich,  Geneva , Basel, and Zug, so travelling and speaking English is very manageable.

What currency does Switzerland use?

The official currency in Switzerland is the Swiss Franc (CHF). Typically $1 USD is worth $1.15 CHF, but exchange rates are always fluctuating, so check the latest rates before travelling. You’ll find it easy to take out cash at ATMs, though credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Do I need to tip in Switzerland?

While guests are not obliged to tip for services in Switzerland, it is customary to modestly tip around 10% for good or excellent service. Many restaurants will include a service charge on the bill, which will cover the cost of a tip.

Is Switzerland LGBTQ+ friendly?

There is a commitment to equality and acceptance in Switzerland, and travellers will find diverse and inclusive experiences everywhere across the country. Major urban centres including Zurich, Geneva, and Basel are all known for catering to the LGBTQ+ community, as well as several ski resorts including Zermatt and Lenzerheide. While rural areas of Switzerland may still be more conservative, the vast majority of Swiss are welcoming and respectful of all travellers.

Food & Drink

The cuisine of Switzerland incorporates lots of cheese, potatoes, and various meats that reflect the country’s pastoral nature. Cheese is a big part of Swiss culture. Though there are more than 450 varieties, cheese is still not mass-produced. It’s made by hundreds of dairies with strict rules and regulations. Nearly half of the milk produced in Switzerland gets turned into cheese. Fondue is a dish that originated in the Swiss Alps. It uses Emmentaler—the classic Swiss cheese with holes created when bacteria produces carbon dioxide in the cheesemaking process—or Gruyere cheese. This is mixed with other local cheeses, melted over a portable stove with a splash of white wine, and bread cubes are served with it for dipping. A popular Zurich meal is Zurcher Geschnetzeltes , sliced veal in a cream and mushroom sauce. Rippli are pork ribs popular in Bern, and served with bacon and potatoes.

Swiss chocolate has been made since the 17th century and Switzerland itself remains one of the world’s top consumers of chocolate per capita.

What is Switzerland's traditional cuisine?

Swiss cuisine has been historically influenced by Germany, French and Northern Italy. Popular dishes include r östi , a flat, hot cake made of grated, cooked potatoes and fried in hot fat. Älplermagronen , is a gratin style dish stacked with potatoes, macaroni, cheese, cream, bacon and onions. This dish is also known as Alpine macaroni—hearty and comforting. Meals that are consumed while socializing and connecting with others are an important part of Swiss life. This includes raclette, melted cheese served with jacket potatoes, gherkins and onions as well as pickled fruit.

Eating cheese fondue with friends is a ubiquitous Swiss tradition, especially in the winter months. There’s a nice communal feel to sharing a pot of cheese, a tradition that goes back a long time. Just no double dipping, dipping while someone else is dipping, or dropping your bread in the pot! And don’t forget, drinking white wine while indulging might be the most important rule. They say water will cause the cheese to solidify, while drinking wine will supposedly aid in digestion. At the end of the pot, be sure to let the remaining cheese bubble away to harden and scrape it off the bottom to enjoy.

Since the 18th century Swiss chocolate has gained an excellent reputation abroad, particularly when Daniel Peter combined chocolate with Henri Nestle’s condensed milk in 1875, to produce milk chocolate. The unique smooth and creamy texture of Swiss chocolate is the result of an innovative technique known as conching, which evenly distributes the cocoa butter, milk and sugar for a delectable melt in your mouth chocolate experience. Switzerland continues to be a leader in both production (and consumption!) of quality chocolate.

What is the dining etiquette in Switzerland?

Making a reservation for evening meals in major cities is important, as it's not uncommon for popular spots to book weeks in advance. Make an effort to arrive on time, as Swiss people are punctual and your reservation will not be kept if you arrive late. You may experience dining at a slower pace, with leisurely service to match. If you happen to be in a hurry, consider telling the staff at the beginning of a meal. It is frowned upon to flag down staff with a wave of your hand. Be sure to politely address them using your voice when they pass by. You can indicate you are finished eating by resting your cutlery together at the lower right corner of the plate.

If dining at someone’s home, bring a small gift for the host. Remove your shoes upon entering, as the Swiss see shoes indoors as unsanitary. Start the evening by shaking hands with everyone in attendance, and formally introducing yourself. When sitting down to dinner, if the host makes a toast, you can join in while making eye contact, saying prost (German) or santé (French). Wait to start eating until everyone is seated. They say there is an unspoken Swiss rule that any dinner guest should vacate before midnight, so consider minding your time!

What is drinking etiquette in Switzerland?

When dining out, it is common to encounter a surcharge for a glass of water. Complimentary refills on soda type drinks are rare. If searching for a beverage uniquely Swiss and non-alcoholic, try Rivella, it is one of the most popular drinks in Switzerland. It is a carbonated soft drink made from milk whey and herbs. Otherwise, hot chocolate continues to be a mainstay in Switzerland, historically served for breakfast.

Alcoholic drink culture in Switzerland is relaxed, and revolves around eating with friends and family. Over consumption is viewed unfavourably. There is a focus on consumption of wine and beer more so than heavy liquors. Swiss wine is not commonly exported, but they say it's because the Swiss consume most of the wine they create! Consider trying a glass of full-bodied Pinot Noir from Graubünden or a light Fendant from the Valais region. Absinthe, a potent green spirit traditionally served with a sugar cube and water, is also a local favourite. Once you are ready to take your first sip, wait until everyone else has received their drink and be ready to clink glasses, while looking everyone in the eye.

Does Switzerland cater to dietary restrictions?

While dining out in cities, it is common to see menus with dietary restriction labeling. Many restaurants offer at least one vegetarian dish. For those with allergies, dairy and cheeses are prevalent in Swiss cuisine. Swiss people are hospitable and will often look to help accommodate dietary restrictions. Though, do consider that travelling away from city centres, there is often fewer dining options. Be sure to check in advance and determine if they are able to make accommodations. While shopping in a store, you will find that as a part of the EU, Swiss products are to be labelled for the top allergens.

What do meals typically cost in Switzerland?

Heading out for a dinner in a Switzerland city, plan to spend about $70 per person. Many restaurants offer lunch menus at reduced prices, expect it to cost around $50 per person. In general, Switzerland has fewer quick service type food options, so keep that in mind for both the length of meals and cost. The most popular street food you’ll see are kebab stands, found commonly near train stations, which will cost on average $10-15. Some grocery stores have self-serve cafes for a quick and cost efficient meal.

Villages and smaller towns often have limited restaurant options, so if spending time out in the country, consider packing a picnic to enjoy the beauty of Switzerland outdoors. Many popular hiking trails have picnic tables available too.

10 Days Switzerland Itinerary

10 Days in Switzerland Itinerary by Swiss Travel Experts [2024]

Blog section, introduction.

Switzerland, a place to experience everything or nothing. 10 days in Switzerland is perfect for the lazy traveler seeking nothing except the view outside his window or the enthusiastic traveler wanting everything he can possibly do with land, air and water.

With 10 days in hand you can not only to cover the main Swiss attractions but also have some leisure time to go off the beaten path or just walk around soaking in all the beauty.

If you are coming in with an international flight, you will most likely land in Zurich so let’s start an itinerary based on this.

For your travel across the country, it would be best to arrive with a pre purchased Swiss Pass so that you can directly hop on to a train from the Zurich airport train station without having to wait in line and buy tickets or passes when all you want to do is head for your destination after a long flight.

Keep in mind that local travel in Switzerland is quite pricey. The pass will cover all public transport, give discounts on mountain trips, free entrance to museums and is totally free for kids under 16!

Day 1: Lucerne

lion monument lucerne

Arrive in Zurich and hop on to a train for Lucerne, which takes roughly 1.15 hours.Your day will depend on your arrival time into Lucerne. Here are some of the options for things to do in Lucerne today

Option 1: Swiss Transport Museum

Apart from showcasing the history of air, land and even space transport, this open air museum has a huge open arena where kids can try their hand at various activities. The complex also houses a planetarium, the country’s largest cinema screen and the popular Swiss Chocolate Adventure. This is justifiably Switzerland’s most visited museum.

Keep in mind - since it is partly open air, it would be wise to check the check weather before heading there. You can easily spend over half a day at the museum

Note: A Swiss Travel Pass discount is applicable on Swiss Museum on Transport entrance fees.

Option 2: Local City Tour

If you are too tired to do much after your flight, head out to explore the city at your own pace.

Start with old town by crossing over the famous Chapel Bridge and walk on the cobbled stone streets.

As you wind your way through these narrow roads, it will lead you to the famous Lion Monument. From here head back walking along the lake. If you have already started pining for chocolate, you will find many local chocolatiers along this walk so make sure to pop into them.

Option 3: Mount Pilatus

If you have almost the full day in hand, start off with a visit to one of the nearby mountains. Mount Pilatus would be a good choice here. The golden round trip offered on this mountain makes the travel as exciting as the peak.

Head to the Lucerne jetty (conveniently located opposite the main train station) and hop on to the boat heading to Alpnachstad. (This journey is free as it is a public transport and part of the Swiss Travel Pass).

At Alpnachstad, get off the boat and head to the cog wheel train (the steepest in the world) and proceed to Mount Pilatus. On the way back use the cable car down to Kriens and take the bus back to Lucerne. If you still have time upon your return, carry on with your exploration of the this lakeside town

Day 2: lucerne – mount titlis.

mount titlis

Take a train from Lucerne train station to Engelberg (45 minutes) a beautiful Swiss village located at the base of the famous Mount Titlis.

From here either walk for 15 minutes or take a bus to the cable car valley station for Titlis. Start your journey by 2 cable cars (including the revolving cable car – Titlis Rotair) to reach the top with mesmerizing views of the Swiss Alps.

On the top, enjoy various activities like the Ice Flyer Chairlift, the Ice cave and the amazing Titlis Cliff Walk.

Try making it back to Engelberg with some time to spare so that you can walk around the village before going back to Lucerne.

Day 3: Lucerne – Interlaken – Jungfraujoch

interlaken switzerland itinerary

We visit one of the most famous sights in Switzerland – Jungfraujoch -Top of Europe and the highest train station in Europe. For this journey, it is highly advisable to depart early from Lucerne – ideally by 7 am or latest by 8 am.

It takes 2 hours by train on the famous scenic train, Lucerne – Interlaken Express to reach Interlaken. Check in to your hotel and proceed to the mountain.

One can opt for the old and traditional route with 2 train changes to the top or the Eiger route.

The traditional route takes you from Interlaken Ost station to the peak via 2 changes in Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg. This route takes around 2 hours.

The route is very scenic and on the last journey the train stops at couple of times at viewing points that give breath taking views of the glacier.

The new route (started in 2020) takes you from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald by train. At Grindelwald, you switch to the cable car to reach the Eiger Glacier Station. Then again switch to train to reach the peak. This route takes roughly 1.15 hours

The Jungfrau excursion is one of the more expensive ones so make sure you have your Swiss Travel pass so that you get the almost 35% discount for pass holders

At the top enjoy amazing views of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the alps.

Enjoy the ice palace with its sculptures, experience snow fun in the snow park in the summer and give in to temptation at the Lindt Chocolate Heaven.

On the way back down, you can stop at Grindelwald and visit this Alpine village or else stop at Lauterbrunnen and visit the glacial Trummelbach Falls.

The falls can be reached by a 10 minute bus ride from Lauterbrunnen station.

The Trummelbach falls are actually 10 waterfalls inside the mountain and can be reached via a lift.

Note: Kids under 4 years of age are not allowed to visit the falls.

Jungfraujoch included in budget trip to Switzerland

Day 4: Interlaken – Montreux and Gstaad

chillon castle boat montreux

The most idyllic pictures of Switzerland are likely shot in Gstaad. Leave early morning and head to this beautiful village (roughly 1.50 hours) via the famous Golden Pass Line.

The beauty of Gstaad has lured the rich and famous to holiday there and also made many leave their homes to settle there permanently. The perfect little wooden chalets in a perfectly manicured setting remind you of a scene from a fairy tale.

From Gstaad proceed by train to Montreux (1.35 hours) a beautiful village on the shores of Lake Geneva surrounded by beautiful Swiss Alps.

Walk along the lakeside promenade and visit the Chillon Castle, the most visited historical building in Switzerland.

In the evening, proceed back to Interlaken (2.15 hours).

Day 5: Interlaken – Zermatt

Travel to Zermatt (2.10 hours), the most popular car free village and famous ski resort. There are many things to do in Zermatt but the main attraction is the Matterhorn.

Settle into your hotel and proceed for a visit to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise to get the best views of the Matterhorn. Walk through the village to reach the cable car base station.

If you have already purchased your excursion, exchange the voucher and take the first gondola up. The ride up is as beautiful as the view from below. You get a feeling of being enveloped in snow and ice. Spend some time getting the perfect photos, visit the Ice palace, have a hearty Swiss meal with a view before you head back down.

Note: Zermatt is a car free village. In case you have a hotel that is far from the station, make sure you call ahead and check if they offer complimentary or paid pick-ups

If you have not had enough of the Matterhorn, visit another vantage point - Sunnegga a famous scenic viewing spot for Matterhorn and the surrounding mountains.

With a funicular from the base station, you are at the top of the Sunnegga in under 5 minutes. Just relax with the best views or opt for some activities. There is a Marmot trail, the Wolli Adventure park and even kick biking available.

Day 7: Zermatt – St. Moritz

glacier express switzerland itinerary

All aboard! Embark on what is said to be the most beautiful train journey in the world – The Glacier Express. It connects the west of Switzerland (Zermatt) to the east (St. Moritz).

The train journey is roughly 7 hours 45 minutes. The views are mesmerizing with a mix of snow, ice, glaciers, valleys, deep gorges and hair-raising Viaducts.

Seat reservation is mandatory and one of the benefits of Swiss Travel Pass is that one can get these at special rates.

It is advisable to book these seats well in advance as they always sell out soon.

St. Moritz is known to have some of the best ski pistes (slopes) in the world. This little village, which sits on a picturesque lake, is also home to some of the most exclusive spas and hotels.

Note: Depending on the season, there are up to 3 Glacier Express departures in a day.The Glacier Express has a fully equipped restaurant and meals can also be pre booked.

Day 8: St. Moritz – Lugano

lugano switzerland

One more scenic journey today. Only this time you head from snowy climes to Mediterranean warmth. The journey on the Bernina Express takes you from St. Moritz to Lugano passing through the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The Bernina express is a combination of train and bus journey. A compulsory reservation is required for both and is advisable to be done well in advance. Swiss Travel Pass holders get special rates.

The first leg of the journey is by train from St. Moritz to Tirano and takes 2 hours 15 minutes. The next part of the journey is via bus. The bus journey from Tirano to Lugano is 3 hours and gets you into Lugano at around 5:30 In the evening.

Note: While booking, pay attention to match the timings between train and bus connections.

  • Depart St. Moritz at 9:17am and arrive Tirano at 11:32am
  • Depart Tirano at 2:20pm and arrive Lugano at 5:30pm

Timings are subject to change and should be checked as per your travel date.

Day 9: Lugano – Lake Como

shores of lake como

Venture into Italy today. Visit Lake Como, a picturesque and popular resort in Italy that can be reached via a direct train in just 45 minutes. Spend time walking around the lake or shopping for silk which this area is famous for. Return to Lugano in the evening

Note: You will need to purchase a train ticket to visit Como since the Swiss Travel Pass is not valid for this journey

Day 10: Lugano – Zurich or Lugano - Milan

rhine falls

Option 1: - Zurich

Reach Zurich main station via a direct train (roughly 2 hours). You can deposit your bags at the main station and head towards the Rhine Falls. Spend some time at Europe’s largest waterfall, take a boat ride to the centre of the falls or view it from one of the viewing points close enough to feel the spray and hear the thunder.

Later, proceed back to Zurich main train station. Get out of the main entrance and continue walking down Bahnhofstrasse (main street) filled with retail outlets of all the top fashion, watch and jewelry brands.

Spend some time at the lake front at the end of Bahnofstrasse before heading back to the station to collect your bags and leave for the airport.

Of course, if you have more time, there are many other sights to see and things to do in Zurich

Note: The Rhine Falls charge an entrance fees of roughly CHF 5 per person as it is a protected National Park. The boat ride will cost additional CHF 8 to CHF 10 francs per person.

Option 2: - Milan

If you are departing from Milan airport, you will take a train to Malpensa airport (roughly 1.35 hours). You will have to purchase a train ticket since the Swiss Pass will not cover this journey.

Time permitting, you can get off at the main station and take a Hop-on -Hop-off bus tour to get a feel of the city.

Don’t forget your last-minute shopping. After all you are in the fashion capital of the world!

This 10 days in Switzerland itinerary covers some of the best mountains, lakes and train journeys that will leave you with memories lasting a lifetime.

Things to know:

The Swiss Travel Pass comes in versions of 3, 4, 8 and 15 days. There is also a continuous pass and a flex option which allows you to travel the chosen number of days within a month (very handy for those staying in one place much longer than in others)

Switzerland is certainly expensive when compared to the rest of Europe. To help with the budget, you can opt for apartments in Switzerland instead of hotels. Apartments can accommodate more people per unit and also have a kitchenette, which makes it comfortable to cook a few meals or have some grocery-bought-meals instead of going to restaurants

Restaurant meals can cost upwards of Swiss Francs 35 per person whereas a quick pizza, McDonalds or doner kebab meal can cost Swiss Francs 18-20

The best souvenirs to purchase would be the Swiss army knife, cow bells, chocolates and cheese…and if budget permits...Swiss watches!!

Never travel without a warm jacket, comfortable shoes and sunglasses. Many mountains are snow bound throughout the year.

Even though the Swiss Franc is the official currency, the Euro is accepted everywhere. Just keep in mind, that even if you pay Euro, change is always returned in Swiss Francs.

Euro coins are not accepted at most places. However, there are a few shops at the airport that do accept them.
