Even better, in November and December, temperatures hover in the 70s and mid-80s, and you can secure discounted resort rates. "For sun-seekers, I'd recommend Jamaica in November, which was (thankfully) spared from recent hurricanes," Olander adds.

Quebec City

If you can't make it to France this fall, you can still enjoy a European-inspired setting and plenty of charm in Quebec City , Perrin says. Francophiles and foodies alike can delight in French-inspired gastronomy at top dining institutions. Plus, the centuries-old structures and quaint cobblestone streets and bistros add to the city's enchanting atmosphere. History buffs can check out Battlefields Park, the Citadel and the Notre-Dame Basilica, while nature lovers can stroll along the serene Terrasse Dufferin. And although temperatures dip into the 30s and 50s at this time of year, you can still admire brilliant maple trees and seize upon shoulder-season discounts.

Asheville, North Carolina

While Asheville may conjure images of microbreweries and the awe-inspiring Blue Ridge Parkway, there's much more to experience over Thanksgiving. Along with temperatures hovering in the mid-50s and 70s, "you've got the fall foliage," Perrin says, with peak leaf-peeping opportunities in early November. Plus, there's the 8,000-acre, decked-out Biltmore Estate, which has a unique history and elaborate holiday displays. Perrin suggests checking out the dazzling wreaths, lights and decorated evergreens at the annual Christmas at Biltmore Daytime Celebration. For a winning mix of culture, history and modern allures, set your sights on Amsterdam for the holiday weekend. You can brush up on the past at the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum Foundation in Leiden, Holland, located near the Dutch capital. After getting a history lesson, visit world-class museums throughout Amsterdam, from the Van Gogh Museum to the Anne Frank House. If you don't mind chilly temperatures in the 40s, November also marks an enticing time to visit, given reduced crowds and plenty of flight and accommodation deals. Make the most of your trip by enjoying a canal-lined stroll and carving out some time to unwind in Vondelpark.

The Big Island, Hawaii

"Hawaii is usually a really great deal in the fall," Perrin says. You can spend your days trekking through tropical rainforests, lounging on black sands at Punaluu Beach, exploring state parks and hiking captivating volcanoes. Catching sight of the fiery lava at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a must, as is checking out a quintessential luau, snorkeling and admiring the views from Mauna Kea. With daytime temperatures in the high 60s to low 80s and low-priced accommodations (including resorts with kid-friendly amenities), November marks an ideal time to visit. Even better, you can feast on traditional Thanksgiving culinary offerings at resorts throughout the island.

Whistler, Canada

Whether you want to enjoy the early ski season – along with enticing gear and accommodation deals as well as faster lift lines – or you're looking to embrace Whistler 's still-pleasant temperatures in the 40s and 50s, you won't mind forgoing turkey for days on the slopes. You can indulge at a decadent spa (think: prickly pear and honey-infused body treatments), kick back in a poolside cabana or commune with nature and enjoy mountain biking and hiking at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Best of all, there are plenty of holiday happenings, including the annual Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park and the Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble 5K.

New Orleans

The Big Easy delivers more than jazz, blues, beignets, Sazeracs and stellar po'boys. You can join the fray in the French Quarter before feasting on a Cajun-inspired turkey day staple: turducken (a turkey stuffed with chicken and duck), typically paired with cornbread and gravy. For more holiday festivities, attend the Bayou Classic Thanksgiving Day Parade on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. And when you need a respite, meander through the Garden District. Already dreaming of a white Christmas? Admire the dazzling displays during the annual Celebration in the Oaks in City Park, when bright lights adorn hundreds of oaks throughout the park, beginning Nov. 24.

Gorgeous weather year-round makes San Diego an alluring beach break at any time, Perrin says, but in autumn, tourist crowds and accommodation rates drop. And while the Southern Californian retreat may be more renowned as a microbrewery mecca and low-key surf town, it's easy to pull off a family-friendly holiday getaway – complete with beachside lounging, hiking at Torrey Pines and exploring Balboa Park – without busting your budget. For those looking to get into the Thanksgiving spirit, there are a variety of turkey trot 5K races and feasts throughout the city. At the famous Hotel del Coronado, for example, you can enjoy a pre-fixe Thanksgiving meal with live music.

Florence, Italy

With low-season crowds (and prices), Europe's cultural meccas beckon to those looking for a world-class weekend getaway over the holiday, Perrin says. In Florence, you can check out world-renowned art institutions like the Uffizi Gallery without battling swarms of tourists. Plus, you can score tickets to top theater and opera performances. Even better, when you're not admiring iconic art, you can escape to the enchanting hills of Tuscany, leisurely sip distinguished bottles of Chianti and soak in the city's sophisticated restaurant and shopping scenes. And though you can expect chillier temperatures in the 40s and 50s, if you don't mind the crisp weather, you'll be rewarded with off-season hotel rates and shorter attraction lines.

Savannah, Georgia

With antebellum architecture, horse-drawn carriages, Spanish moss-lined streets and historical treasures, Savannah delivers on Southern charm. And in mid-November, you can take advantage of shoulder-season discounts, pleasant temperatures in the 50s to 70s and even a twinkling tree-lighting ceremony followed by the Boat Parade of Lights on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Take in more of the city's genteel charms on Black Friday as you explore the City Market, check out River Street or people-watch in photogenic Forsyth Park in the Historic District. What's more, over the long weekend, you can count on mouthwatering low country cuisine, from shrimp and grits at Cotton & Rye to biscuit buns and scones at Back in the Day Bakery.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

If you're itching to embrace the great outdoors over the holiday break, Joshua Tree National Park packs plenty of dry air, desert scenery and spectacular hikes, Perrin says. For postcard-worthy views, make your way to Keys View lookout. Fuss-free, frugal-minded vacationers seeking cost-effective accommodations may consider an Airstream (via Airbnb) at Kate's Lazy Desert near the park entrance, while campers can stake out a spot at one of the 44 sites at Hidden Valley Campground, which offers easy access to top trails. Best of all, the park's striking desert landscapes and two distinct ecosystems – the Colorado and the Mojave – are 140 miles west of Los Angeles. Skip shopping on Black Friday to join a ranger-led program or take a hike.

Santa Barbara, California

Santa Barbara's consistently pleasant temperatures in the mid-50s and upper 60s, reduced nightly room rates and mix of fashionable boutiques and acclaimed restaurants appeal to those craving an escape-it-all getaway far from the holiday stress back home. Grape-seekers can enjoy leisurely wine tastings and gallery-hopping at the Funk Zone, while shoppers stroll along State Street to stock up on holiday presents. When you're not attending a yoga class, you can enjoy strolls along the harbor in the dubbed "American Riviera" before delighting in a farm-to-table meal at an acclaimed dining institution such as Brophy Bros, The Lark or Opal Restaurant & Bar.

Whether you want to explore ornate palaces, catch an opera or peruse an elaborate Christmas market, Austria's cosmopolitan capital is a great choice for the holiday weekend, Perrin says. After all, you won't miss stuffing or Black Friday shopping as you savor roasted chestnuts, seasonal delights and handcrafted goods beneath twinkling lights at the Viennese Christmas Market outside City Hall. A number of Christmas markets and cultural happenings take place throughout Thanksgiving weekend, Perrin adds. The Viennnese Christmas market begins on Nov. 18, and the Christmas Village Belvedere Palace begins on Nov. 24. And while temperatures dip, if you can brave the 30- and 40-degree temperatures, you can score reasonably priced accommodations in November.

Lisbon, Portugal

While Lisbon lures travelers with its bargain-friendly rates and affordable attractions year-round, in fall you can embrace thinning crowds and comfortable temperatures lingering in the 50s and 70s through the end of November. Visit Alfalma to admire in the city's elaborate tile-laden sidewalks. Next, make the pilgrimage to postcard-worthy Sintra to admire picturesque villas and palaces along the hilly cobblestone streets. When you're ready to refuel, savor an authentic Portuguese meal followed by a pasteis de nata – a sweet custard pastry and an enticing alternative to pumpkin pie. At the end of the day, retire to one of Lisbon's affordable boutique hotels or take in iconic fado music in the Alfalma district.

Newport, Rhode Island

For an idyllic New England getaway with coastal scenery and fall colors, plan your escape to Newport. While temperatures can dip into the 30s, you can take advantage of thinning tourist crowds and plenty of pampering. At the enchanting Castle Hill Inn, there's an elaborate Thanksgiving spread – complete with littleneck clams, turkey and pie. Plus, with the Thanksgiving Package promotion, you can enjoy a two-night stay, a Thanksgiving feast, breakfast and afternoon tea – along with a half bottle of Cabernet – at a fixed rate. For more activity, check out the shops along Thames Street and take a brisk stroll along the Cliff Walk trail before warming up by a crackling fire at The Chanler.

Miami Beach

Celebrate the long weekend with some quality time catching up on R & R by the pool, the beach or at top shopping meccas on a sunny escape to Miami Beach. Thanks to swift recovery efforts following Hurricane Irma, major hotels, resorts, museums, nightlife venues and shops are open for business. Whether you want to check out striking art deco buildings on Ocean Drive, rent a beach chair on South Beach or simply stay put in a cabana at your hotel, there are plenty of ways to unwind and dodge the holiday routine (and countless hours of meal prep). What's more, you can embrace an American feast and celebrate the holiday at acclaimed restaurants without lifting a finger. At StripSteak by Michael Mina at Fontainebleau Miami Beach, for example, you can enjoy holiday staples such as glazed carrots and roasted turkey.

Richmond, Virginia

With its storied sites, Southern charm and burgeoning culinary scene, Richmond is an enticing Thanksgiving escape for foodies, culture vultures, history lovers and outdoorsy types alike. Along with trendy art- and design-centric hotels like the Quirk Hotel, there are plenty of opportunities to embrace the great outdoors. Cross the James River to Belle Isle for a memorable bike ride or picnic, or enjoy blazing fall colors in Shenandoah National Park (about 90 miles west of Richmond off Interstate 64). And if you opt for a history-filled vacation, get a sense of Richmond's genteel attractions like the Jefferson Hotel and the Valentine Museum. When you're ready to refuel, enjoy traditional Southern cuisine – including fried chicken and biscuits with sausage gravy – at The Roosevelt.

Portland, Maine

For a mix of requisite New England charm and history, it's hard to match Portland. You can admire the area's craggy coastlines, Victorian homes and picturesque Portland Head Light before retracing pilgrims' footsteps and heading to Popham Colony, an early American settlement that some believe was formed in 1607, before Plymouth Rock in 1620. Set along the Kennebunk River, approximately 25 miles northeast of Portland, the colony features a boulder with the sign "Popham Rock." For modern allures, base yourself in Portland and retreat to the Press Hotel before enjoying a leisurely meal. The Holy Donut and the Highroller Lobster Co. are a couple of must-visit eateries. Cap off your feast with a pub crawl in the East Bayside neighborhood.

Pink-hued sands, world-renowned golf courses and captivating oceanfront scenery offer the perfect antidote to the holiday grind. And while the weather in this mid-Atlantic island will be chillier at this time of year, with daytime temperatures hovering in the 60s and 70s, you'll be rewarded with reduced accommodation rates. Whether you want to explore unspoiled coral reefs, hit the links at Port Royal Golf Course or enjoy leisurely strolls in historic St. George – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – you'll be grateful for some time in the sun rather than making the pilgrimage to your in-laws' house. What's more, you can enjoy duty-free shopping or pampering at the spa before savoring a traditional rum-infused cocktail and delicious Bermudian culinary specialties (sampling traditional fish chowder is a must).

In November, London draws visitors with its festive Christmas markets, mild daytime temperatures, colorful autumn foliage and enticing flight and hotel deals ahead of the peak winter tourist season. If you're a history buff, you can catch the acclaimed hit musical "Hamilton" at Victoria Palace Theatre throughout November. What's more, culture seekers can explore can't-miss institutions such as the National Gallery, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. For more time outdoors, explore lively Borough Market or meander to Notting Hill's Portobello Road Market to pick up vintage gifts and classic English antiques. For more world-class shopping, head to Oxford Street. And if you're feeling nostalgic for a traditional Thanksgiving feast, you'll find quintessential American trimmings like pumpkin pie and roasted turkey at top restaurants throughout the city.

Annapolis, Maryland

With striking coastal scenery along the Chesapeake Bay, delicious blue crabs and crisp autumn air, Annapolis offers a refreshing change of scenery. Admire the colonial architecture and cobblestone streets in Historic Annapolis before grabbing a bite at one of the area's fine dining establishments (Cantler's Riverside Inn, O'Learys Seafood Restaurant and Chick & Ruth's Delly are longstanding crowd-pleasers). And on Black Friday, after you stroll along the city's charming brick streets, peruse the boutique shops and galleries along Main Street in Historic Annapolis to pick up a few holiday gifts. Afterward, visit Dock Street in Ego Alley to people-watch on a bench, grab a bite to eat and admire the sailboats bobbing in the water.

Some people just aren't into the big Thanksgiving Day extravaganza.

This is America, where Thanksgiving is portrayed in popular culture as a time for gatherings of loving families and friends, holding hands while saying grace over a roast turkey, passing casseroles and footballs, reminiscing about the past and dreaming of the future.

But. This being America, we also know that traditions — just like every other aspect of contemporary life — become more complex the more we examine them.

So when we posted a question recently on NPR's Facebook page asking those who are planning to spend Thanksgiving alone to tell us why and how, we got hundreds and hundreds of very different responses .

Mixed Reactions

Some people were upset that we even brought up the subject of going solo on Thanksgiving.

"Geez, NPR, rub it in," was one Facebook response.

Another: "This is the saddest thing NPR has ever posted."

Others were thankful, thankful for the opportunity to point out why they will be alone — by choice or by necessity.

"Initially, this may seem depressing," one person said. "But as someone who has spent a Thanksgiving alone and enjoyed it, I have to say that sometimes spending time with the family is overrated."

Another wrote, "Why is that day any different from any other day? And what's so awful about enjoying one's own company?"

Still others offered opinions: "You must hate people if you're choosing to be alone on Thanksgiving."

And another person responded: "I am a little surprised and disheartened by the comments to this post. I clicked on it because I have spent this holiday alone in the past, not because I hate people and I didn't necessarily find it depressing. For the holiday season, perhaps you should keep your judgmental biases on how holidays should be spent to yourself and restrain from declaring other people's lives or decisions depressing."

Complicated reactions from a complicated nation at a complicated moment in our timeline. In any case, one thing is certain: Many Americans will be spending Thanksgiving Day alone.

Single Servings

"At a time when too many people are feeling hyper-connected, overstimulated, too busy and too hassled, what could be more dreamy than spending an entire day completely on your own, doing whatever you want, whenever you want?" says Bella DePaulo , who teaches psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara and is the author of Singled Out: How Singles Are Stereotyped, Stigmatized and Ignored, and Still Live Happily Ever After . "Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that are highly scripted. You are supposed to spend it with other people — especially with family. All jokes and sitcoms aside, you are supposed to want to spend it that way."

But a lot of Americans are celebrating by themselves because of demanding jobs, challenging schoolwork, family tensions or the expense of travel. Some don't care for all the dinner-table questions people ask, or the political talk , or the meat-and-sweet potatoes menu, or the lame jokes; some people prefer going on nature hikes or biking or snowboarding or strolling around empty cityscapes on Thanksgiving Day. A few are even crossing over to Canada, where it's just another Thursday.

Some people simply find it easier to be alone. "I'm a very busy divorced mom and business owner," says Delaine Due of Ashland, Ore. "A few years ago, I started giving myself an artist's meditation retreat on Thanksgiving weekends when my child is with his dad's family. It's as if I'm single and in art college again." Due says she enjoys, for the brief time, being in control of her environment. "I get to choose the wine, the materials, the music, the food, without ever having to ask anyone else's permission."

Mackenzi Johnson works in merchandising in Nashville, Tenn. Her family will be convening many hours away in Northeast Ohio. "The distance, the insane traffic and the logistics of loading the four dogs into a station wagon makes staying home for Thanksgiving a much more attractive option," Johnson says. "I haven't come up with anything for dinner yet, but I've got the version of Company with Neil Patrick Harris and Stephen Colbert." She says she realizes the irony of watching Company .

"There's a dive bar around the corner that usually opens Thanksgiving night, and they have karaoke," Johnson says. "I might brush up on the lyrics to All by Myself ."

Living in San Francisco, Joel Goldfarb doesn't have any relatives nearby. "I'm a single gay man, 49. My parents are deceased," he says. "Friends typically have other plans. I don't want anyone taking pity on me, so I don't tell anyone I'm going to be alone. I hate the feeling but somehow survive it."

Laura Thornton, a student at the University of Chicago Law School, says some of her friends have invited her to spend the holiday with them. "But I never liked Thanksgiving much anyway, so I'd prefer to spend it alone."

Her plan, she says, is to "just chill out with my dog and drink whiskey in my apartment, like I did last Thanksgiving. Sometimes I find it hard to take time out for myself, so it's actually kind of nice to have this time imposed on me. Plus, hopefully I'll get a lot of work done."

'Something Else Entirely'

And there are those for whom life's cruel turns have made the thought of celebrating Thanksgiving anathema or have forced them to find different ways to mark the day.

"I will be spending Thanksgiving by myself this year because I am not in a holiday spirit," says Lesli DeGross of Baltimore. Her only child, Zakary, passed away from cancer in 2010.

"Since then, holidays don't feel the same and are difficult to get through," she says. "I miss him so much that I'll end up crying the whole day because he isn't here with me."

Diane McGee Hardin lives near Austin, Texas, and has multiple sclerosis. "I will be alone this Thanksgiving. My story may seem sad, but I've come up with a plan to enjoy this year." Hardin has offered to be an online resource for her Facebook friends who are looking for Thanksgiving cooking advice.

"So far," she says, "I've written several recipes for friends and have dished up a fair number of suggestions and inspiration. I may not get to eat with them — most of them don't realize I'll be alone — but I'll be involved, and that makes me feel a lot better."

The turkey is roasting in the oven, the mashed potatoes are simmering on the stove and, well,  you’re exhausted. Whether you’ve taken a flight, train ride or car trip to your Thanksgiving destination, you’ll likely have had to battle crowds days  before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after, which adds to some of the busiest travel days in the US.

With my family spread out across the country, I’ve been used to paying extortionately high airfares to travel on those busy days (even when I thought I was outsmarting the airlines by booking way back in the spring), and sitting on the floor of overcrowded airports due to flight delays.

But a few years ago, I decided enough was enough. It was time to take a different strategy — flee the country on my own. As it turns out, there are numerous advantages to traveling abroad during Thanksgiving week and I’ve since turned it into my annual solo adventure.

I use the nine consecutive days for a solo adventure

For most companies in the US, Thanksgiving Thursday and the Friday are designated holidays. So, the best way to optimize your leave is to take the three days before off, meaning you get nine consecutive days to play with. No other holiday on the US calendar allows for this.

Plus, as it’s near the end of the year, a lot of Americans find they’ve stacked up their holiday days without taking them. Planning days off around Christmas and New Year’s can be tricky, often having to juggle schedules with coworkers to ensure enough people are in the office.

And, since most people only take the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, I prefer to take advantage and use my days sooner rather than later. After all, unused holiday can’t be recycled.

I make two bookings: my flight and group tour and I’m ready

Despite having studied travel forecasts and plotted the best strategies and routes, I’ve always resigned myself to some sort of unforeseen holiday travel drama, whether that’s landing home in San Jose, California after the airport has technically closed, or seeing my flight progressively more delayed, only for it to eventually be cancelled.

But my travels out of the country have been like any other operating day. All I ever have to do is make two bookings: my flight and my group tour  and I’m ready. I board the plane and, from the moment I land, I’m in the care of someone else – no further research needed. As a result, I’ve been able to experience all the highlights of a country and spend less than an hour planning.

As soon as I started redirecting my holiday travels out of the US, I found myself at gates that weren’t overflowing – and I could actually could get a seat. Being able to relax before the start of a trip sets the right tone. So far I’ve been to Ecuador, Morocco , and Argentina on my own during the Thanksgiving holiday season.

As it’s not a holiday elsewhere, there’s often less crowds

At each airport, that stressful hustle was noticeably gone. In fact, it was life as normal. And, as it’s not a holiday elsewhere, there’s often less crowds at the touristy hotspots, too.

Don’t get me wrong, being away from family and friends on a major American holiday can be rough, but once you’re out of the country, there aren’t any of those reminders (unlike Valentine’s Day, where you’d still be inundated with heart-shaped candy boxes wherever you were).

Before my first solo Thanksgiving trip, a friend suggested I bring a bag of dried cranberries with me – a little taste of Thanksgiving dinner far from home. On another trip, while I was in Morocco, we happened to have a tagine cooking class that night and the chef surprised us with turkey as the main ingredient.

And one of my favourite ways to truly celebrate American traditions is by sharing them with non-Americans I’ve met on group tours, like I found myself doing with my fellow solo travelers on my Flash Pack trip to Finland .

There’s also the chance that, if you’re single in your 30s or 40s and you’re home for Thanksgiving, surrounded by nieces and nephews, the inevitable question of why you’re not married with children will come up. In fact, some of us even find ourselves assigned to the kids table.

Instead, I’ve taken control of the situation and celebrate the fact I’m single (after all, science says there are benefits) by embracing it and traveling solo. On my Flash Pack trip to Finland, my group immediately bonded by that common thread and we were all  proud of it .

I express gratitude by channelling my adventurous spirit

While "me time" can be a welcome respite from the world's hectic pace, it can get a little lonely if you aren't making a choice to spend time alone. Especially if you're alone during the holidays, like Thanksgiving, when you're accustomed to being with friends and family.

"Fortunately, there is much to be grateful for even if you're marking it [Thanksgiving] at home with yourself," explains Tracy Thomas, Ph.D., psychologist and founder of Dr. Tracy Inc., an emotional training company in California. "As an emotional scientist who helps people build the emotional strength they need to succeed, one of the most important shifts a person can make is to deepen self-connection. This opens up the ability to experience everything more deeply, peacefully and enjoyably—regardless of external circumstances."

7 Tips for Those Celebrating Thanksgiving Alone

So instead of thinking of it as a lonely Thanksgiving, here's how to enjoy a solo Thanksgiving.

1. Start the Day by Jotting Down a Gratitude List

"As Thanksgiving approaches, it's important to develop a sense of gratitude," Thomas says, especially for those who might be celebrating alone for the first time.

So to find the bright spots amidst the chaos. Open your Notes app or pull out a journal and write five things you're grateful for. Numerous studies have proven that those who make a concerted effort to count their blessings (the rationale behind Thanks giving, after all) are less likely to be depressed and more likely to lead happier lives.

2. Use Social Media Intentionally

Do you tend to experience FOMO or feel bummed out by seeing others celebrating when you're solo? If so, keep your phone in a drawer and stop scrolling through updates from friends and family.

If you do find joy in connecting and communicating online, feel free to log on. Just keep this advice from Thomas in mind:

"Whatever you do with social media, it's important to recognize what your intentions are and make sure you're acting with intention, so you actually achieve what you're wanting, rather than just cycling into lower emotional states that can make you feel worse. Use these tools to fulfill intentions," she says. For example, texting friends and family or sharing photos of what you're grateful for on Instagram stories is positive, instead of focusing on what you're potentially missing out on.

3. Partake in a Virtual Holiday

If you can't be with the people you love in person, set a time and pick a platform to get together virtually. Cook together remotely, and dig into a Thanksgiving recipe you've shared together in the past.

4. Do Something to Treat Yourself

Those who engage in more self-care experience lower levels of stress and higher quality of life, according to a study in the journal BMC Medical Education .

Self-care doesn't have a one-size-fits-all definition. Instead, it's personal and should be aligned with what makes you less anxious and depressed. This can be as simple as slipping on your softest socks, lighting a favorite candle, or playing a nostalgic playlist, or as big as planning a vacation or opening up a special bottle of wine.

5. Order Takeout, If You Like

Supporting small businesses is always a good idea. If you have a local restaurant you love, go ahead and skip the homemade Thanksgiving menu and outsource the cooking this year. Whether it's a traditional Thanksgiving , pizza delivery, or Indian cuisine via curbside carryout, you make the rules, so choose whatever feeds your soul.

6. Try This Single-Serving Thanksgiving Menu

If you're in the mood for something more like mom or grandma made, Colleen Weeden of the Better Homes & Gardens Test Kitchen suggests roasting a cornish game hen. "They're perfect for a single. Season as you like, then roast at 375° F for 1 ½ hours," she says.

For the sides, try "baking" a single sweet potato in the microwave until tender, then garnish with…

• Sweet: Mascarpone cheese and a drizzle of maple syrup
• Savory: Butter, salt, and pepper

Buy a canister or box of stuffing mix and follow instructions to make a serving for one. "Make a full or half batch of cranberry sauce ," Weeden advises. "Don't worry if it's too much. Then you can use it to spread on sandwiches, toast, pancakes, French toast, or use as a sundae topping."

My family loves corn casserole, so you could cook an ear of corn and riff on street corn," Weeden says. Slice off the kernels and garnish them with Elote Corn Topper.

"For dessert, purchase mini graham shells (like Keebler Ready Graham Pie Crusts) and fill with lemon curd or your favorite pudding. Then top with a squirt of whipped topping and add a fun sprinkle of mini chips or multi-colored sprinkles," Weeden says.

7. Don't Forget to Be In the Moment

"Check in with yourself as often as you check your phone so you keep building connection to yourself instead of continually disconnecting from painful and stressful emotions and thoughts," Thomas says.

Feel what you need to feel, even if that's not positive. It's OK to be bummed too. So cry, vent, exercise, let it out—then open up that self-care toolbox again.

Just remember: "You're a powerful creator of all of your experiences no matter what you choose to focus on—choose your focus in every moment so you can create the best Thanksgiving possible this year," Thomas says.

And there’s nothing wrong with feeling down or missing being with your friends and family. Rather you turned down an invitation or your family lives out of town, having a solo of Thanksgiving doesn’t mean you have to feel sad and lonely. There are ways to be solo and still enjoy Thanksgiving.

The first step to enjoying a solo Thanksgiving is accepting that you’re alone. Being alone isn’t a bad thing, and you can still make the most out of the day. If you can’t be with your family or friends on Thanksgiving. There are still things you can do that’ll put you in the company of others. Like volunteering to helps those less fortunate. You’ll feel good helping others and less lonely. The holidays are what you make of them, so you don’t have to spend them feeling lonely and sad. Being alone on Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be a bad thing, so here’s how you can enjoy solo Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated on the same day around the world or in other countries. There are lots of people who travel to escape a solo Thanksgiving. You can meet up with other travelers and make new friends.

Make your solo Thanksgiving your own

There’s no wrong or right way to celebrate Thanksgiving. I live miles away from my friends and family so it’s not uncommon for me to spend Thanksgiving alone. At first, I’d get sad and lonely. But now it doesn’t bother me as much. I’ve made the holiday my own. I don’t celebrate it the typical way, but the way I’d like to celebrate. So if you’re spending Thanksgiving alone make it your own and spend the day doing something you’ll enjoy.

Try something new

Have you been waiting to learn something new or pick up a new hobby? Then why not spend your Thanksgiving trying something. Chances are you probably have something stuffed in your closet that you’ve been meaning to try, or a project you’ve been meaning to finish. So if you’re solo on Thanksgiving try taking your mind off being alone of Thanksgiving by putting your focus into learning something. You could learn how to crochet, paint, or sew.

Get productive

Ever wished you had a day dedicated to decluttering or organizing? Well, why not make Thanksgiving a productive day. It easy to forget about being solo when you’re cleaning out your closet, sorting out paperwork, or generally getting details of your life in order. And by the end of the day, you’ll feel accomplished and happier that things are in order.

Being solo isn’t as bad as one may think. After you accept being alone, you can start planning a fun solo Thanksgiving. That’s all your own. So don’t let being alone on Thanksgiving bring you down, accept and think of all the possibilities.

Get Pumped at a Parade In New York City

Sure, you can kick back in your recliner to watch the 2024 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade televised from New York City on November 28, but that doesn't match the excitement of being there to see the marching bands, live performances, musical artists, floats and giant balloons. Santa and Mrs. Claus will make their annual appearance and the Radio City Rockettes will do some kicking of their own before the parade. (Check their website for the schedule.) The parade lasts just one day, so what to do afterwards? Doing Thanksgiving Solo? 7 Ways To Spend Your Day

Thanksgiving has been branded as a holiday that’s all about spending special time with family. While that is true for some, there are people who spend the holiday alone. For some it’s a choice, but others may not have family around to share the day with . Either way, a solo Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be bleak or boring. It’s a chance to kickstart a new adventure or spend quality time with yourself. 

Some people don’t like the idea of doing things alone, while some cherish solo time. Either way, you can make the day memorable by being intentional about enjoying it. Here are a few ideas for alternative fun. 

Pamper days aren’t overrated because you can never love on yourself too much. If you’re feeling blue about doing the holidays solo, consider creating a special pamper day; the Thanksgiving edition. Pampering is a personal matter so think about what makes you feel relaxed. A bubble bath and massage isn’t everyone’s idea of relaxation and you are free to do it your way. Is sitting in pajamas all day your idea of ease? Do you prefer painting your nails and listening to some of your favorite R&B jams ? Essential oils and the sounds of nature? Curate a day that will make you feel at peace.

You may also decide to turn your pamper day into a fun experimentation. Go on TikTok and try out a few different facials, hair regimens, and skincare ideas that you’ve seen are trending.

Thanksgiving can be triggering for some people, especially if they have toxic family members or unpleasant childhood memories surrounding the holiday. Show love to your younger self and cater to your inner child by creating new and more pleasant memories. Where to start? Write down a list of all the things you loved doing as a kid. Was your favorite movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids ? Did you love drinking hot cocoa in the morning? Did painting make you come alive? Take the time to list out some of your favorite childhood activities and rituals. You can then plan a solo day that’s all about you and tapping into the things that brought you joy growing up.

If you’re in the spirit of giving back and want to take the focus off yourself, consider volunteering. Check if there are any events going on in your local community, which you may be able to find on Eventbrite. Local churches may also have events they’re organizing to support those in need.

Alternatively, create your own initiative that aligns with how you want to give back. For example, you could create care packages for people in shelters or cook, package and distribute hot meals for homeless people in your area. Doing this can be a selfless way to remember how much you have to be grateful for.

Road trips can be a way to be alone with your thoughts, see beautiful views, and discover new cities. Think about taking a road trip to destinations you’ve been curious about during the upcoming holidays. If your goal is to see stunning aesthetics, try making your way to Trail Ridge Road, which happens to be the highest road in the state of Colorado. You’re likely to spot some wildlife during the drive and get some views of Rocky Mountain National Park.
