Thalayanai Waterfalls At Kalakad In Tirunelveli Thalayanai Waterfalls At Kalakad In Tirunelveli: The Thalayanai Falls are located on the way to Manjolai in Kalakad, Tirunelveli. The Thalayanai waterfalls are located at Kalakad in Tirunelveli, and they are one of the most beautiful sights to visit. The falls are unique because the water is hot. It's like bathing in a natural hot tub!

Kalakad is a small village in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. This place is known for its lush green forests, rocky cliffs and hills, and the famous Thalayanai Waterfalls. The water of this waterfall looks like milk coming down from the hills. Kalakad stands at a distance of about 80 km from Tirunelveli and 26 km from Radhapuram. The beautiful Thalayanai Waterfalls are located near Pattamadai, a small village in Kalakad. The water of the Thalayanai Waterfalls looks white because it flows through thick forest with lots of trees and shrubs that contain calcium carbonate. When the water flows over them, it appears white like milk flowing down from a bowl. These falls are most famous for its scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere. It is a perfect picnic spot for nature lovers, trekkers and adventure enthusiasts who want to spend their time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The Thalayanai waterfalls is situated at the foothills of Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in Tirunelveli district. This waterfall is unique with its shallow depth and calm waters. The falls are surrounded by lush green vegetation, making it an ideal picnic spot for families and friends. The Thalayanai waterfall is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Tirunelveli. The road leading to the falls is in good condition and can be approached from any part of Tamil Nadu. At about 18 km away from Tirunelveli, this waterfall is a nice place to visit during the summer months. The falls are surrounded by lush green vegetation, making it an ideal picnic spot for families and friends. It's a great place to sit around and enjoy nature as well as have some fun with your family!

Palakkad also called as Palghat is the gateway to Kerala at the foot of the western ghats. Palakkad is a land of green paddy fields and graceful tall coconut trees. Along with these Palakkad also holds misty mountains, evergreen forests, huge dams, wildlife sanctuaries and historical monuments. Palakkad is called the granary of Kerala.

Palakkad is blessed with a wide variety of attractions. You can engage yourself in a variety of entertainment options in these beautiful land. There are exotic hills like Nelliyampathy, Attappady which are a delight to watch.

The unique Silent Valley National Park, Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary and dams like Malampuzha, Mangalam, Pothundi, Kanjirapuzha, Siruvani and Parambikulam are some other destinations in Palakkad.

Not only natural attractions there are many made attractions in Palakkad. Palakkad Fort is one such place. Situated at the middle of the city the fort welcomes you to this wonderful place. 1. malampuzha.

Malampuzha, ‘The Vrindavan of Kerala’ is located close to Bharathapuzha at a distance of 13 km from Palakkad town. Malampuzha is a place blessed with both natural beauty and man made architecture. Since the completion of dam the place is converted to a wonderful tourist spot. The huge dam located in the hilly region itself is amazing.

Other attractions in Malampuzha are Malampuzha Gardens , a fish shaped freshwater aquarium, snake park, children's park, a Reservoir, Garden House, Japanese Garden, Hanging Bridge, Sculpture of Yakshi, Ropeway, Road Train, Telescopic Tower, Rock Garden and Fantasy Park.

The reservoir offers you the opportunity to enjoy fishing and boating. The Garden House has a unit of water sports. The passenger ropeway is a thrilling experience. This is the first of this kind in South India.

The thread garden is another place which worth a visit. There are plenty of fabulous life like models in the thread garden. The Rock garden and Telescopic tower is also attractions of this place.

2. Palakkad Fort

This fort situated at the heart of the city welcomes all the visitors to this marvellous place. This fort is a historically important one which tells us about the tales of many heroes of the past.

With its architectural beauty and historical importance it draws the attraction of all visitors. Kotta Maithanam, west of the fort is very famous being the place Tippu’s cavalry camped. Nearby the fort there is a children’s park and open air stadium.

3. Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary

Parambikulam situated in Western Ghats about 125 kms from Palakkad has a variety of attractions. The dam and the wildlife sanctuary here are most popular and one of he most visited places in Palakkad.

This is a famous haunt of bird watchers. One can see all sorts of animals and birds here. Parambikulam also has a reservoir which offers you entertainment options like fishing and boating.

The place is famous for teak plantations. The oldest teak tree, ‘Kannimaree’, stands here. There is a national park here, which is named after Salim Ali, the famous bird observer.

4. Silent Valley National Park

Silent Valley, the evergreen national Park in Palakkad is a unique attraction of this place. The Silent Valley National park spreads an area of 90sq. km is situated in the north eastern corner of the district. The rarest species of animals and birds are seen in the valley.

Apart from these the National Park houses more than thousand kinds of trees. The valley has a fair representation of all peninsular mammals. Visiting this National Park in Palakkad will be an exciting experience.

5. Chulannur Peacock Protection Centre

Chulannur is a village situated 22 km away from Palakkad town and is a famous Peacock protection Centre in Palakkad. Kunjan Nambiar Smrudhi forest is also located here.

6. Seetharkundu

Seetharkundu at Nelliampathy is a stunning landscape offering the view of the valley below. One of the major attraction in here is the 1000 meters high water falls.

It is believed that during the ‘vanavasa, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana had lived here. Seetharkundu got its name from the legend that Sita devi during the vanavasa period with Rama, took a bath here.

7. Meenkara Dam

Meenkara a beautiful place in Palakkad district is famous due to the presence of the dam, garden, fish ponds and the stunning natural beauty. The exact location of Meenkara is 32 km south east of Palakkad town.

8. Siruvani Dam

Siruvani dam situated 80 km away from Palakkad town is the common reservoir of Kerala and Tamilnadu. The dam and the surrounding is blessed with amazing natural beauty. The dam is constructed across Siruvani Puzha which is the tributary of Bhavani Puzha. It supplies drinking water to Coimbatore municipality.

There is a waterfall from 2000 feet height on the eastern side of the dam. The beauty and the cool climate of the place attracts so many visitors to this place.

9. Mangalam Dam

This huge beautiful dam is located 48 km south of Palakkad town. The dam is constructed across Cherukunnu Puzha, a tributary of Mangalam river. The dam situated among the natural beauty of Palakkad has so many wild animals here. There are deer, wild elephants and rare species of birds on the fringes of the reservoir.

10. Thunchan Madom

Thunjan Madom also called as Guru Madom on the banks of ‘Sokanashini’ (destroyer of sorrow) Chittoorpuzha is a place blessed with the presence of literary men. In Sokanashini, an old building at Chittur Thekkegramam village, Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, the father of Malayalam language spent his last years. The pen he used for writing is still kept here as a precious memento.

11. Pothundi Dam

Pothundy 38 km south of Palakkad town, in Nelliyampathy route holds the popular Pothundi Dam. The dam is across Padipuzha and Meenchadipuzha, the two sub tributaries of Ayilurpuzha, which is the tributary of Bharathapuzha.

12. JP Smrithivanam & Deer Park

JP Smirthivanam and Deer Park located at Walayar reserve forest 22 km away from Palakkad town in Palakkad-coimbatore road is a must visit place. This spreads an area of 100 acres. One can watch deer and other animals roaming here in their natural habitat. The park offers you elephant riding.

Kalakkad mundanthurai tiger reserve / wildlife sanctuary.

Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, the second-largest protected area in the state of Tamil Nadu, is located in the southern Western Ghats in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari District.

The reserve covering a core area of nearly 895 square kilometres and a total extent of 1602 square kilometres (including the buffer/forest zone area) was created in the year 1988 by combining Kalakkad Sanctuary and Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary.

Rivers, Dams & Waterfalls – The reservoirs, waterfalls, dams and other water bodies attract tourists in huge numbers. The reserve has 14 rivers originating from it and so it is also referred to as the ‘River Sanctuary’. The rivers flow into three main watersheds namely Thamirabharani, Manimuthar and Upper Kodayar. The reserve also hosts 11 dams that include Karaiyar Dam, Kodumudiyar Dam, Servalar Dam, Papanasam – Upper and lower dam, Manimuthar Dam, Kadananathi Dam and Ramanathi Dam. The major waterfalls in the reserve are Banathirtham Falls near Karaiyar Dam, Agasthiyar Falls, Manimuthar Falls and Kalakkad Thalayanai.

Agriculture & Hydel Projects – Agriculture is the main occupation in the buffer area of the reserve, the irrigation of which is facilitated by the rivers originating from the reserve. The water from the rivers is also used for three hydroelectric power stations in the Tiger reserve.

Biological Values – The wide variation in climatic and topographical features of the reserve supports a variety of wildlife and floristic compositions. The place is rich in biodiversity and unique vegetation suitable for endemic flora, fauna and avian species. Bird watching, trekking and boat rides are other highlights of the Tiger Reserve. Trekking trails are to be experienced at the designated places with permission from the forest authorities.

Flora & Fauna – The reserve has a rich flora that includes endemic plants, reptiles, fishes, amphibians, birds and mammal species. The wildlife in the reserve includes tiger, leopard, elephant, guar, chital, Nilgiri tahr, giant squirrel and many other endemic and rare species of animals.

Human Settlement – The oldest race of inhabitants in the forest area are the Kanis or Malaiarasans. They are engaged in land cultivation and also employed as Forest Guards and Watchers and Anti-poaching watchers by the Forest Department. Their expert knowledge of the forest and the wild habitats is inimitable.

Religious Significance & Aesthetic Value

Apart from the biological values of the reserve, the place is also visited by a number of pilgrims. The places of religious importance include the Gorakhnathar Temple and a Durgah beside the temple, Sorimuthuayyanar Koil and Nambi Kovil.

About 35 square kilometres of area at the side of the eastern foothills of the reserve is attributed for tourism. The moist evergreen forest surroundings of the reserve are a thrilling experience for photographers, nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

The best season to visit Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve is between October and March, before summer sets in when the climate becomes humid. The reserve is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on all days.

• Guided trekking for about 2 hours is available at a rate of Rs. 200 per person (maximum of 10 persons) and Rs. 1250 per trek (minimum of 5 persons).
• Guided view for 1 hour of Agasthiyar Peak, Nagapothigai, Iyanthalai Pothigai and Pandiyan Kottai is available at a rate of Rs. 25 per person (maximum of 15 persons) and Rs. 200 per trek (minimum of 5 persons) in a slot.

When he asked Hyder Ali to help him against an invasion, the latter took the opportunity to take possession of the Palakkad fort and the fort stayed under the rule of Mysore Sultans after that until 1790. That was when it was captured by Colonel Stuart, long after several backs and forth battles over the fort between the British and the Sultans. Under the British rule, the fort was renovated and used as an operation base till the mid 19th century. Later, it was converted into a Tehsil.The fort was forgotten until 2004 when the Archaeological Survey of India took it under its wing. The war memorial was a falling, dilapidated, damaged building when the ASI took over. Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve

KMTR is the only one tiger reserve in Tamilnadu and 17th tiger reserve in India. This was established in the year 1988.

This reserve is a mixture of three main sanctuaries Kalakad Sanctuary and Mundanthurai Sanctuary and a part of Kanyakumari Sanctuary. It sprawls across an area of 895 Sq.KM. This Reserve has been identified as one among the Type-1 Tiger Conservation Units (TCU) and also classified as tropical moist evergreen forests.

This sanctuary is located in the midst of latitudes 80 25’ North to 80 53’ North, between longitude 770 10’ East and 770 35’ East, this sanctuary also forms a part of Agasthiyarmalai Biosphere Reserve. This sanctuary receives rainfall on both the monsoons and so it can be found greenish all time.

Important species include significant Sarcandra, a vessel less Angiosperm, Paphiopedulum, druryi, a rare orchid and Nageia wallichiana a broad leafed and only conifer tree of south India. Other important tree species include Hopea parviflora, Hopea utilis, Calophylum elatum, Cullenia exarillata, Artocarpus hirsute, Syzygium sp., Cinnamomum zeylanicum, macaranga roxburghii, Mesua ferrea, Gluta travancorica, Canarium strictum, Veteria malabarica, Myristica species and ect.

This sanctuary is blessed with lots of waterbodies and so many varieties of water creatures can be found including Glossogobius giuris, Mastacembelus armatus, Channa striatus, Channa orientalis, Etroplus maculatus, Etroplus suratensis, Oreichormis mossambica (Tilapia mossambica), Macrones vittatus (Macrone vittatus), Ompak bimaculatus (callichrous bimaculates), Heteropneutes fossilis (saccobranchus fossilis), Xenentodon cancila (Belone cancila), Aplocheilus lineatus (Haplochilus rubrostigma), H.lineatus synonym of Aplocheilus lineatus, Bhavania australis (Homaloptera brucei), bengalensis and ect.

Adding to this about 89 varieties of Amphibians, reptiles, endemic species and non-endemic species are found. 30% of the reptiles are considered to be poisonous.

This sanctuary is a home to lakhs of birds’ species. As this sanctuary has dense tree and lush forest, it is a safe haven for many lovely birds. Few of the notable ones are Grey Francolin, Rain Quail, Jungle Bush Quail, Small Buttonquail, Yellow-legged Button quail, Barred Button quail, Red Spurfowl, Painted Spurfowl, Grey Junglefowl, Indian Peafowl, Bar-headed Goose, Lesser Whistling-duck, Cotton Pygmy-goose, Spot-billed Duck, Northern Pintail, Eurasian Wryneck, Speckled Piculet, Rufous Woodpecker, White-bellied Woodpecker, Brown-capped Pygmy, Woodpecker, Lesser Yellownape, Streak-throated Woodpecker, Common Flameback, Black-rumped Flameback, Greater Flameback, Brown-headed Barbet, Forest Wagtail, White Wagtail, White-browed Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Nilgiri Pipit, Paddyfield Pipit, Baya Weaver, Indian Silverbill, White-rumped Munia, Black-throated Munia, Scaly-breasted Munia, Black-headed Munia, and Common Rosefinch. The visitors can see birds feeding their small ones at a hand’s distance

Mundanthurai is also a safe haven for more than 79 species including Tiger, Asian Elephant and Lion tailed Macaque. The co-predators of Tiger include wild-dog or Indian Dhole and Leopard.

Mundanthurai forest department takes immense steps in planting medicinal plants all around the area. So far they have planted medicinal trees including Hibiscus, Emblica, Pomagranade, Tulsi, Vilvam etc in 150 ha. They have also distributed 36000 plants to the public at free of cost. . Moreover about 4000 seedlings have been planted in Agasthiar Kani Settlement, Servalar Settlement, Mundanthurai Forest staff quarters, Kani school buildings and Servalar Government Hospital building.

Biodiversity

KMTR is one among the 5 centers of plant diversity and endemism of India. It is considered as a richest conservative and so got the name “Super-hotspot”. The floral diversity in KMTR includes 448 endemic species, 58 Red- listed species, 601 Medicinal species, and 90 species of wild relatives of the cultivated plants. There are 3 Gymnosperms and 156 Pteridophytes. The faunal diversity includes 47 species of fish, 47 species of amphibians, 89 species of reptiles, 337 species of Birds and 79 species of Mammals

There are bus service from Tirunelveli, Thirukarangudi, and Kalakad. The nearest railway station is at Tirunelveli 50 kms. Airport service is available at Madurai 200 kms from Mundanthurai.

The Britishers and Tipu sultan fought a great battle which ended with the treaty of 1872. The lands and possessions of Tipu sultan were ceded to the British East India company and it formed a part of Malabar District of the presidency.

Malampuzha Dam

One of the largest reservoirs of Kerala, Malampuzha Dam is located near Palakkad in South India. It is surrounded by the Western Ghats on all side. Malampuzha Dam is a combination of a masonry dam with a length of 1,849 meters and an earthen dam with a height of 220 meters. The dam is 355 feet high and crosses the Malampuzha River, which is a tributary of Bharathappuzha, which is Kerala's second largest river.  Its construction was initiated in 1949, and it took about six years to finish the project. The dam was inaugurated on 9 October 1955 by the then Chief Minister of Madras, Sri. K. Kamaraj. Malampuzha Dam has a total catchment area of 145 square kilometers, and the reservoir has a capacity of 8000 square meters of water. 

Palakkad Fort

Palakkad Fort: (Open 0800-1800 hrs) The old fort situated in the very heart of Palakkad town is one of the best preserved in Kerala. It was built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766 and later taken over and modified by the British in 1790. It is now preserved by Archeological Survey of India. A temple of Lord Hanuman is adjacent to the main entrance of the Fort. A museum of Archeology is also functioning inside the Fort.Fort is surrounded by a moat. A jogging track parallel to the moat is provided for jogging in the morning and evening hours. The entire area is beautifully landscaped.

Rock Garden

Malampuzha Rock Garden, maintained by the District Tourism Promotion Council, Palakkad, is the first-of-its-kind in South India. The Rock Garden was inaugurated on 7th January, 1996 in a building constructed by the District Nirmithi Kendra, Palakkad. This impressive collection of artwork is conceived and designed by renowned sculptor Padmasree Neck Chand Saini, the creator of India's first rock garden located in Chandigarh.

Parambikulam Wildlife

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is situated in Chittur taluk of Palakkad district and is about 100 km away from Palakkad. The challenging hill ranges here are placed at an altitude of 300 to 1438 m above sea level and the place offers a good climate with temperatures ranging from 15 degree Celsius to 32 degree Celsius. Sprawling over an area of 285 sq km, Parambikulam can boast of the first scientifically managed teak plantations of the world and also houses the world's tallest and oldest teak tree. The popular Thekkedy River also flows in this area. There are some aboriginal tribes like the Kadar, Muduvar, Mala Malasar, and all are settled in 6 colonies.

Mangalam Dam

Among the gems of Palakkad district is the Mangalam Dam, built across the Cherukunnath River. The reservoir attracts people in large numbers due to the surrounding forest area. The dense canopy, along with a large number of diverse floral and faunal species, makes it a must-visit site in these parts. Take a boat ride or find a comfortable spot to sit and relax, as this secluded spot has something new to offer on every viewing.

Siruvani Dam

The Siruvani Dam is a straight masonry gravity dam, built across the Siruvani river, a tributary of Bhavani river at Mannarkkad Taluk in Palakkad District. Siruvani Dam, constructed in 1984 is used for supplying drinking water to the city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. The catchment is in the reserve forests of both Kerala and Tamilnadu. Muthikulam hill is situated on the eastern side of the dam and the waterfall from this hill is the main source of the dam.

Nelliyampathy Hills

Nelliyampathy Hill Station: This fascinating hill station is at a height of 467 to 1,572 m above sea level. This hilly village is the delight of trekkers. Location: 65 Km from Palakkad (Palakkad-Nemmara of Trichur – Vadakkenchery – Nemmara route) 25 Km deviation from Nemmara. Attractions/Sight Seeing Points: Sitharkundu view point, Manpara view point, Kesavanpara view point, Victoria Church Hills, Karappara Dam site. 

Kanjirapuzha

a tributary of the Thuthapuzha River, the Kanjirapuzha Dam in Palakkad is a reservoir which has mountain ranges at all its sides. Kanjirapuzha is a scenic town located at a distance of about 40 km from Palakkad town. The major attraction of the town is its dam which has the majestic Western Ghats as its background. The dam and the reservoir are built across River Siruvani, and the picturesque beauty of the region attracts travelers. The reservoir lies close to an evergreen forest which is known by the name Vettilachola.

Chulliyar Dam

Chulliyar Dam is one of the major irrigation project in palakkad which gives water to the kollengode panchayath. Situated at a distance of 36 Kms from Palakkad, it is a scenic place situated near Kollengode and Meenkara Dam. View of Chulliar Dam with the western ghats as background is spectacular. This is the southern part of the Palakkad Gap.

Meenvallam Waterfalls

Meenvallam Waterfalls, a hidden gem in Palakkad district, cascades from as high as 45 metres into Thuppanadu River which originates from the Kalladikodan Hills. Thuppanadu River later joins with the Thoothapuzha, which in turn empties into Bharathapuzha River. Located 8 km deep inside the forests from Thuppanad Junction on the Palakkad-Manarkkad Route in NH 213, the waterfalls are catching the attention of a lot of our visitors.

Velliyamkallu

Kollengode Palace

At a distance of 26 Kms from Palakkad Railway Station, Kollengode Palace was once the seat of the Kollengode Rajas. The name was derived after 'Kollen' (black smith community), who resides here. The Kollengode Palace has now been converted into a luxury hotel with an Ayurvedic spa. Many international tourists come here for Ayurvedic treatment in natural surroundings.

Malampuzha Ropeway 

Malampuzha Garden in Palakkad district is the only rock-cut garden in South India made by Nek Chand, the renowned artist and winner of the prestigious Padmashree Award. The entire garden is made from broken pieces of bangles, tiles, used plastic cans, tins and other waste materials. Also situated in the gardens is the massive Malampuzha Yakshi (female vampire) built in 1969 by Kanayi Kunhiraman, a greatly respected sculptor from the state. It is a spectacular relic of art that we are lucky to still have with us. The flowering beds, fountains and rose gardens along with an aerial ropeway make it a place that instantly soothes your soul.

Seethargundu Viewpoint

Seethargundu viewpoint is located in the western ghats of Nelliyampathy.It is located around 8 km from Nelliyampathy. Seethargundu has associated with Ramayana.There is a saying that Lord Ram,Lakshmanan and Mother Sita rested in this place during their vanavasam period of fourteen years Seethargundu waterfall runs about 100ft, which gives a glorious experience.This location gives a wide view of stone queries and paddy fields spread close to resembling a green blanket. 

Silent Valley

Parambikulam Dam

Parambikulam Dam is the best in India and one of the top ten embankment dams in the world. The dam is located with in Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary and it is surrounded by rich natural beauty. It is also an excellent place for bird watching. Boating is available in the reservoir.The dam is operated and maintained by Tamil Nadu but the ownership rests with Kerala, Per the agreement with Tamil Nadu, Kerala was supposed to receive 7.25 TMC feet of water per year from the Parambikulam Aliyar Project of which the Parambikulam Dam is a part.

Pothundi Dam

Dating back to the 19th century, Pothundi dam is one of the oldest dams in India. This irrigation dam holds a total capacity of 50,914,000-meter cube and provides irrigation to an area of 13,500 acres. The core wall of the dam is built by using a mixture of jaggery and quicklime which makes it unique in a way. This dam exemplifies a perfect blend of engineering and architecture.

Meenkara Dam

​ Meenkara Dam Lake, a scenic lake surrounded by rain forests and mountains in the catchment area of the Meenkara irrigation dam project. Peoples around does fishing in this lake for living needs. The water from this dam is mainly used for Irrigation purpose through a large network of canal system spreading out through the whole palakkad district. Bharathapuzha

The Bharathapuzha river is the second longest West Flowing River that drains into the Arabian Sea in Kerala State. This basin is bounded in the East by the Cauvery basin, in the West by the Arabian Sea. The basin lies approximately between 100 26' and 110 13' North latitudes and 750 53' to 770 13' East longitudes. Its drainage area is 6,186 sq.km spread over the two states namely Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The basin is elongated in shape and finds its outlet into the Arabian Sea. There are five Hydrological Observation Stations on this river maintained by CWC i.e at Kumbidi, Pulamanthole, Mankara, Pudur & Amabarampalayam.
