Q&A WITH SAM BLUNSDON, HEAD OF COMMERCIAL AND TOURISM PRODUCTION, CONNECTIONS LUXURY

Firstly, can you talk us through the origins of Connections Luxury and your founding mission?

Sam Blunsdon, Head of Commercial and Tourism Promotion (SB): Connections Luxury was founded in 2014 with a belief in the power of human-to-human interaction. As a result, we developed the pioneering Connections Way format, which focuses on creating positive, shared emotions that fast track meaningful, long-lasting business relationships. 

10 years on, Connections Luxury is now a world-leading community for decision makers in the travel industry and has run over 50 events globally across more than 30 destinations, connecting thousands of individuals together. 

The luxury travel industry is centred around people, so it’s important to us that they are at the heart of everything we do. 

Please briefly introduce us to Connections Luxury and tell us more about the Connections Way.

How have you seen the luxury travel sector evolve since the inception of the company?

SB: This year marks our 10th anniversary and, as such, we have seen the luxury travel landscape shift massively. Whereas luxury was once seen as materialistic, with a focus on opulent accommodations and high-end amenities, there has been a shift towards experiential luxury over the more recent years.  

Today’s discerning travellers seek unique and authentic experiences which allow them to become immersed in the local culture and environment, with a focus on personalisation, sustainability, and those truly one-of-a-kind experiences. At Connections Luxury, our whole essence is about creating meaningful business relationships, and over the years, we have seen how the power of human-to-human connection has really driven the success of luxury travel and support for the industry. 

As a key partner for many notable tourism boards across the world, how does Connections Luxury ensure their success?

SB: It is important for any destination or partner to truly understand the needs of the client, alongside their strengths, challenges, and how Connections Luxury can support them on their journey and share their story with our international community. 

In essence, each tourist board wants to drive more luxury travellers into their destinations and showcase their unique products, services, and culture to international markets. Success comes from gaining a deep understanding of this, along with understanding the minds of our community and luxury buyers and bridging the gap so more effective business can be achieved. A lot of the time, all our destinations have so many incredible products and services. It’s about working with them to unlock these secrets about what makes them special and promoting it to the world. 

How does Connections Luxury incorporate the culture of each country when working with different tourism boards?

SB: At Connections Luxury, we believe that the essence of luxury travel lies in authentic cultural immersion. To achieve this for all our events, we work with local companies and experts to advise us on what makes each destination unique.  

A key component of our events is working with a local digital media controller. They have a breadth of knowledge about their destination and support us in finding hidden gems we may not know about.  

We also make sure to incorporate a mixture of unique venues, as well as local and international luxury hotels, as our event partners to spotlight the variety of products each destination has. 

The final step is making sure authentic, local experiences are injected into the event throughout  one-to-one meetings, group activities, cultural performances, and event entertainment, working collaboratively with local artisans, chefs, experience providers, musicians, and cultural experts to create experiences that reflect the true spirit of the destination.

As the organisation runs its second edition of Connections Luxury Philippines in collaboration with TPB Philippines, what can people expect from this year’s partnership?  

SB: This year’s Connections Luxury Philippines event was hosted from 19th – 22nd May in the beautiful Island of Boracay. We welcomed 37 handpicked luxury agencies from across the globe, including areas such as the US, UK, Europe, Asia Pacific, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), India, and Northern Asia to meet and conduct business with 35 of the finest luxury travel products across the Philippines, putting a spotlight on this incredible country and how it’s a top destination for luxury travel. 

With the event hosted in Shangri-La Boracay, Crimson Resort and Spa Boracay delegates were able to enjoy meetings injected with authentic, cultural experiences, showcasing the wonders the Philippines has to offer the luxury market.  

Experiences included the Ati-Atihan Festival, fish house making, halo-halo, and hydroponics, as well as working with local companies such as Distileria Barako to highlight local products. The aim of the event and partnership was to drive more luxury travellers into the destination and promote luxury Filipino products to an international stage. 

The Philippines has so many incredible luxury products, and what is apparent from working with the local private sector is that hospitality and people are what make the destination shine, so working with TPB on this year’s products was about showing said hospitality and authentic experiences to our international community. 

How is the collaboration set to champion the Filipino tourism sector?

SB: Our collaboration with TPB is set to champion the Filipino tourism sector by bringing international attention to the country’s luxurious offerings and hidden gems. By highlighting the Philippines’ diverse products, from its pristine beaches and world-class diving spots to its rich cultural heritage and culinary delights, we aim to attract high-net-worth individuals who value unique and meaningful travel experiences. This influx of luxury travellers will boost the local economy, create jobs, and enhance the global perception of the Philippines as a top-tier travel destination. 

The collaboration is important for many reasons: 

• This was an opportune time for the Philippines and TPB to solidify its stance as a preferred luxury destination in Asia, offering authentic experiences that leave a lasting impression of luxury with the world-renowned Filipino brand of hospitality. 
• In 2023, the Philippines saw a significant boost in luxury travel, welcoming 5.45 million international visitors and generating USD$8 billion in tourism transactions. 
• The Filipino government, through its National Tourism Development Plan 2023–2028, aims to further enhance the luxury tourism sector by improving infrastructure, promoting sustainable tourism practices, and increasing marketing efforts globally. 

Looking ahead, how will the partnership between Connections Luxury and TPB Philippines evolve the country’s tourism industry over the next five years?

SB: As the Philippines’ positioning as a luxury destination strengthens, bringing more investment into the country, such as more high-end accommodations, efficient transportation links, and bespoke experiences, the partnership is set to grow, and the Philippines will be seen more frequently as a key player for luxury industry events and a top destination for luxury buyers and clients within Asia.  

Our aim is to continue bringing Connections Luxury Philippines to the forefront, thereby supporting the local luxury private sector to connect with international buyers and driving more luxury spend. 

The last two years have been an excellent educational piece for the international community, with Filipino luxury products bridging the gap between buyers’ and clients’ needs and the luxury services they provide. We aim to close this gap further over the next five years and support the destination in sharing its story with the international market and elevating what makes the Philippines so special for any traveller.

Time is luxury, and having it all means squat without the calendar space to enjoy it. For ultra-high-end travel operators, the search for lost time has led to demand for a product that may sound slightly down market: package itineraries.

“More and more, travelers are looking for immersive, personalized, and worry-free travel experiences,” says Marc Speichert, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at the Four Seasons .

There is, however, one massive difference between these package itineraries and the geriatric-themed bus tours of yore: They’re by private jet, yacht, and Bentley.

For years, the Four Seasons has offered a Private Jet Experience , which Speichert says is about creating “a seamless end-to-end journey with our legendary comfort, service, and amenities.”

In a similar vein, White Desert speeds up Antarctic exploration by replacing the multi-day southward cruise with a private jet, a luxury whip.

“Many of our clients are company owners or entrepreneurs with highly pressurized jobs,” says Mindy Roberts, the company’s CMO. “When it comes to leisure travel, they’ve said they enjoy that the decision-making has been taken away from them and they can completely relax and be on holiday.”

Another factor driving growth in ultra-luxury, pre-planned, package bookings is their ability to facilitate slow travel. Both the Four Seasons and White Desert offer tours lasting upwards of three weeks, leaving plenty of time to explore each stop thoroughly.

Kalindi Juneja, CEO of U.K. firm PoB Hotels , says its guests are increasingly opting for longer stays in fewer destinations—its longest curated itinerary is 12 days. The brand is “prioritizing depth over breadth in their exploration,” says Juneja. “‘Authenticity’ drives guests to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, engage with local artisans, savor traditional cuisine, and participate in cultural activities unique to each location on their itinerary.”

Below is a look at some of the most extravagant planned holidays on the market today and all the wild perks they offer.

Around the World in 24 Days

Four Seasons offer a wide range of itineraries using the private-jet service it launched in 2015, with eight tours taking place each year and varying between 13 and 24 nights in duration.

The World of Adventures tour begins in Seattle, spending a couple of days exploring the city and getting to know your jet-mates for the next three weeks, before heading to Kyoto for the first of eight stops. Along the way you will experience an immersion in Japanese tea culture, unwind in the incredible tropical nature of Bali and the Seychelles , and re-energise amidst the buzz of Bogotá. 

The stand-out experiences, however, are the time spent among wild mountain gorillas in Rwanda, observing these extraordinary animals at breathtakingly close quarters, and sailing on a specially chartered yacht around the Galápagos Islands. This trip has it all, from vibrant cities to truly remote wilderness—and by the time you reach your final leg in Fort Lauderdale, consider extending for a couple of days more to catch your breath and reflect on all you’ve seen.

Seven Continent Completist

Having seen huge success with its South Pole trips—including its Echo Camp being named as one of Robb Report’s Top 50 Luxury Hotels in 2023—White Desert has created an expanded tour dubbed White Desert World that takes guests to all seven continents. 

Meet your group in Mexico City for a day before shoving off for 21 days of flying gradually eastwards. You’ll take in the majesty of Easter Island, the orangutans of Borneo and tigers of Jaipur, and the eclectic buzz of Istanbul before heading south through Namibia and South Africa and eventually arriving at Wolf Fang runway for a day spent on the planet’s most southerly continent. Those with more of an appetite for cold can opt to spend a further five days in Antarctica (there won’t be any nighttime there at that point in the year), exploring the whole of the landscape, meeting the local penguins, and witnessing some of the most astounding beauty our world has to offer.

Britain by Bentley 

You may not immediately associate a luxury car brand with travel bookings, but that’s exactly why Bentley wanted to create this Extraordinary Journeys experience.

Bentley has led trips in destinations across the world, but the flagship route is in its home country, the United Kingdom. The week begins with a tour of the factory in Crewe followed by a dinner on the very line where each Bentley is handmade, with the models currently in production suspended above your head. An early start the next day lets a fleet of Bentleys—all provided by the brand, with the option for you to swap models each morning—begin the journey to the Highlands of Scotland and the home of partner brand the Macallan . Lunch and refreshment stops call in at some of the finest properties in the U.K., and routes are specifically plotted to provide maximum driving enjoyment. The crescendo is an incredible whisky tasting and dinner inside Macallan’s distillery—don’t worry, the chauffeurs will drive you afterwards.

A Gracious Grand Tour

A few hundred years ago it was customary for the wealthy young men of Europe to complete a Grand Tour after their education. They traveled to the most cultured cities on the continent with the goal of expanding their horizons and becoming more well-rounded, “worldly” individuals. 

Rocco Forte Hotels , taking inspiration from that period, have leveraged its network of luxury hotels across Europe to create an itinerary that reflects the most popular spots of the 17th century, from Scotland to Sicily. The trip begins in Edinburgh at the legendary Balmoral hotel. The PoB Hotels group has more than 50 properties all across the British mainland in its portfolio. Members include country retreats, like the Fife Arms and Glenapp Castle in Scotland, as well as city spots such as west London’s the Hari. The group’s PoB Breaks tour allows you to join up stays at multiple hotels, creating a road map for exploring the hidden pockets of Scotland, England, and Wales. 

Options range from a short four-day tour of northern England based on the recommendations of a local celebrity chef to an extended 12-night exploration of the west coast of Scotland. And if the line-ups PoB have chosen don’t completely meet your requirements, simply use the interactive map on its booking site to create your own bespoke itinerary from scratch.

Fjord Like a Nord

The utter seclusion of the Norwegian fjords make them an ideal destination for those looking to escape the stresses of modern life. Local experts 62 Nord have curated a series of Drive the Fjords trips around the most opulent hotels in the region.

You’ll drive between each hotel along some exceptionally exciting roads in a Porsche Taycan . Dramatic scenery, world-class accommodation, and the chance to drive the legendary Trollstigen are among the attractions of this itinerary, but there is plenty more to discover along the way.

The pull of its fascinating history is what draws visitors to Russia, lured by the grand architecture, modern cities, luxury hotels, bucolic countryside and the stoic pride of its people. Moscow is the economic, cultural and political powerhouse, and the capital city since the 15th century. Beginning with the famous Red Square, you run the gamut of incredible architecture masterpieces and iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Kremlin and its cathedrals have come to be the visual cue of the nation’s image, as has Saint Basil’s Cathedral. The Tretyakov Gallery – the most visited in Moscow – is the supreme spot for absorbing classical Russian art. Many visitors to Moscow also manage the Golden Ring, a route through nine ancient towns in the northeast that have managed to hold onto their 14th-century flavour. Sites here are mainly religious – UNESCO-listed cathedrals and monuments. The cities include Ivanovo, Kostroma, Pereslavl-Zalesskiy, Rostov, Sergiev Posad, Suzdal, Uglich, Yaroslavl and Vladimir. St. Petersburg – founded by Peter the Great and commemorated by countless artists and writers – is a seaside paradise. It was only founded in the early 1700s – fairly young compared to some of Eurasia’s other significant cities. Thrillingly, it is Russia’s cultural heart, filled with art museums, opera houses and ballet stages. The State Hermitage Museum is the largest in the world at more than 700,000 square feet, its 120 rooms visited by one million people every year. A visit to Russia isn’t complete without a taste of the fresh air. The Russian countryside is primarily made up of rolling, treeless plains called Steppes. Four climates zones make for an interesting melange of plant and animal species, not to mention the various sporting activities: skiing in Rosa Khutor, mountain climbing in Caucasus, white-water rafting Altai Republic and hiking around Lake Baikal.
