Dubai Creek separates the city into two towns, with Deira to the north and Bur Dubai to the south.

The creek has been an influential element in the city's growth, first attracting settlers here to fish and pearl dive. Small villages grew up alongside the creek as far back as 4,000 years ago, while the modern era began in the 1830s when the Bani Yas tribe settled in the area.

The creek is where you come to capture city views from the water, either by taking a trip on one of the many dhows that have been restored as tourist cruise boats or by hopping on an abra (small wooden ferry) between the ferry points on the creek's Bur Dubai and Deira banks.

On the Bur Dubai side of the creek, rubbing up against the Bastakia neighborhood, the waterfront has been regenerated as the Al Seef district, with a waterfront promenade backed by traditional coral-block and limestone buildings, a floating market, and shops selling crafts. It's a great place for a stroll with excellent water views.

Farther southeast down the creek, on the Deira bank just north of Al-Maktoum Bridge, is the Dhow Wharfage. It's still used by small traders from across the Gulf who sail their dhows onward to Kuwait, Iran, Oman, India, and down to Africa's horn.

This tiny remnant of Dubai's traditional economy is a fascinating place to wander around and watch cargo being loaded and unloaded on and off the dhows.

At the southeastern end of Dubai Creek, just before the creek joins with Dubai Canal, is the newly developed Dubai Creek Harbor with a waterfront marina walkway, which offers excellent vistas of the city skyline.

The Al Fahidi Quarter (previously known, and sometimes still referred to as the Bastakia neighborhood) was built in the late 19th century to be the home of wealthy Persian merchants who dealt mainly in pearls and textiles and were lured to Dubai because of the tax-free trading and access to Dubai Creek.

Al Fahidi occupies the eastern portion of Bur Dubai along the creek, and the coral and limestone buildings here, many with walls topped with wind-towers, have been excellently preserved.

Wind-towers provided the homes here with an early form of air conditioning—the wind trapped in the towers was funneled down into the houses. Persian merchants likely transplanted this architectural element (common in Iranian coastal houses) from their home country to the Gulf.

Lined with distinct Arabian architecture, the narrow lanes are highly evocative of a bygone, and much slower, age in Dubai's history.

Inside the district, you'll find the Majlis Gallery , with its collection of traditional Arab ceramics and furniture (housed in a wind-tower), and the Al Serkal Cultural Foundation with a shop, café, and rotating art exhibitions (located in one of the historic buildings).

Highlight: Evening entertainment hub with a global cultural focus

From October through April, this entertainment park provides family-friendly entertainment themed around taking visitors on a journey around the world.

Global Village's 26 country pavilions, ranging from Iraq to Japan and Russia to South Korea, each offer an individual experience of that country's culture, entertainment, and heritage. It's a unique option in the city for evening entertainment for families with little ones in tow.

Some of Dubai's most popular beach resorts are strung out all along its length, making this one of the most popular places to stay for visitors who want to make hitting the beach a major part of their Dubai stay.

Dubai's excellent museum is housed in the Al-Fahidi Fort, built in 1787 to defend Dubai Creek. The fort's walls are built out of traditional coral blocks and held together with lime. The upper floor is supported by wooden poles, and the ceiling is constructed from palm fronds, mud, and plaster.

In its history, the fort has served as a residence for the ruling family, a seat of government, garrison, and prison. Restored in 1971 (and again extensively in 1995), it is now the city's premier museum.

The entrance has a fascinating exhibition of old maps of the Emirates and Dubai, showing the mammoth expansion that hit the region after the oil boom. The courtyard is home to several traditional boats and a palm-leaf house with an Emirati wind-tower. The right-hand hall features weaponry, and the left-hand hall showcases Emirati musical instruments.

Below the ground floor are display halls with exhibits and dioramas covering various aspects of traditional Emirati life (including pearl fishing and Bedouin desert life), as well as artifacts from the 3,000- to 4,000-year-old graves at Al Qusais archaeological site.

Sitting slap-bang between Dubai's older neighborhoods clustered around the creek and the city's modern sprawl, this ginormous 150-meter-high picture frame is one of Dubai's latest sights.

Inside Dubai Frame , a series of galleries whisk you through the city's history and explore Emirati heritage before you travel up to the Sky Deck, where there are fantastic panoramas of both old and new Dubai to be snapped on the viewing platforms.

This mammoth project incorporates a swag of world-class theme parks providing something for everyone, whatever your age.

Motiongate takes its theme from Hollywood productions, with rides based around movie blockbusters; Bollywood Parks brings the world of India's famous movie industry alive on its rides; and Legoland Dubai and Legoland Waterpark provide younger visitors with a fun-packed day out on its interactive rides, water slides, and wave pool.

The district's attached Riverland Dubai dining hub means that there's no need to leave after you've exhausted yourself with theme park pursuits, as there's plenty of evening entertainment here as well.

Jumeirah Mosque is considered by many to be the most beautiful of Dubai's mosques. An exact copy of Cairo's Al-Azhar Mosque, which is eight times its size, the Jumeirah Mosque is a fine example of Islamic architecture.

This stone structure is built in the medieval Fatimid tradition, with two minarets that display the subtle details in the stonework. It is particularly attractive in the evening when lit with floodlights.

The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Cultural Understanding (which also runs a program of tours, lectures, Arabic classes, and cultural meals) organizes guided tours of the mosque designed to try to foster a better understanding of the Muslim faith.

Thanks to its surf and prevailing wind, the northern section of Umm Suqeim Beach is Dubai's top spot for kitesurfing.

While in the Jumeirah area, it's well worth brushing off the sand for an hour to visit the Majlis Ghorfat Um Al-Sheef just a three-kilometer hop from the beach. Built in 1955, this was the summer residence of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed al-Maktoum.

The residence, made out of gypsum and coral block, has been restored and maintains much of the original beautiful decor, giving you a better understanding of the opulent lifestyle of Dubai's rulers.

The Majlis Gardens feature a reproduction of an impressive Arab irrigation system, and many shady date palms.

Sheikh Zayed Road is the main thoroughfare running through Dubai's modern downtown business district.

This wide, eight-lane highway is rimmed with towering glass, chrome, and steel high-rises along its entire length. It's one of the best on-the-ground vantage points for Dubai's famed skyscraper views.

Main attractions are along, or just off, the strip between the roundabout and the first intersection, and most of Dubai's famous malls are located along the road's route.

Deira lies on the northern bank of Dubai Creek and the winding streets here unveil the melting pot of different nationalities that have come to call Dubai home. On the shore, ancient dhows load and unload with modern banks, hotels, and office buildings as a backdrop.

For travelers, Deira is most famous for its traditional souks (markets), which bustle with shoppers at all times of the day.

Escape the city's skyscrapers for an afternoon at the Dubai Butterfly Garden . For a slice of nature, this vast butterfly garden, with around 15,000 butterflies flitting under the domed enclosures, can't be beaten.

It's a great chance for kids to get close-up views of butterflies as they often land on visitors' shoulders and hands.

There's a museum here, too, with plenty of information on butterfly varieties, their habitats, and life cycle.

Highlight: Explore Dubai's sea-going heritage and life along this coastline before the contemporary city

Dubai's architectural, cultural, and maritime heritage is showcased at the Heritage and Diving Village, with displays related to pearl diving and dhow building—two of old Dubai's historic economic mainstays.

There are also recreations of traditional Bedouin and coastal village life, with Persian homes, a traditional coffeehouse, and a small souk where potters and weavers practice their handicrafts at the stalls.

Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum was the Ruler of Dubai from 1921 to 1958 and grandfather to the current ruler. His former residence has been rebuilt and restored as a museum that is a fine example of Arabian architecture.

The original house was built in 1896 by Sheikh Saeed's father, so he could observe shipping activity from the balconies.

It was demolished, but the current house was rebuilt next to the original site, staying true to the original model by incorporating carved teak doors, wooden lattice screens across the windows, and gypsum ventilation screens with floral and geometric designs.

Thirty rooms are built around a central courtyard with wind-tower details on top.

Inside are the exhibits of the Dubai Museum of Historical Photographs and Documents with many wonderful old photographs of Dubai from the period between 1948 and 1953.

The marine wing of the museum has photos of fishing, pearling, and boat building. Throughout the building there are many letters, maps, coins, and stamps on display showing the development of the Emirate.

Nearby is the Crossroads of Civilizations Museum , which explores the United Arab Emirates' historic role as a trading center between Asia, Africa, and Europe long before oil became this region's most prominent industry.

Located inside the old residence of Sheikh Hashr bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, who was a member of Dubai's ruling family, the exhibits trace this coastal area's history as part of the global trade routes, with displays of artifacts and manuscripts.

By far, the best times to visit Dubai are the months of November, December, January, February, March, and April when the weather is, in general, at its most pleasant. This is peak tourism season, though, so prepare for hotel prices to be at their highest.

Keen shoppers after discounts galore should head here during January when the entire month is devoted to the Dubai Shopping Festival. Be aware that January is Dubai's coldest month, though, with an average high of 23 degrees Celsius and temperatures dropping as low as 14 degrees.

For the best weather, particularly if you're going to hit the beach or head out into the desert during your trip, plan to travel here during the months of November or April when the average daytime temperatures sit between 25 and 26 degrees Celsius, and only peak as high as 31 degrees.

These two months usher in plenty of blue skies and sunshine for outdoor activities, but without the scorching heat of summer. Whichever month you choose, pack a warmer layer. You will need it to counter the ferocious air conditioning of Dubai's many indoor venues.

Other Considerations When Timing Your Visit to Dubai

Before deciding on which month to visit, check out when Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting is happening. During this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sundown every day. The Islamic calendar is lunar, so the dates for Ramadan shift every year.

Ramadan in the UAE is strictly followed, and eating, drinking, chewing gum, and smoking in all public spaces is forbidden from daybreak to sunset for everyone, including non-Muslims.

Although some restaurants, mostly those based in international brand hotels and usually one designated café in a mall, will still serve food during the day (with blinds pulled down across the restaurant windows, so that those fasting don't need to see people eating) nearly all restaurants and cafés shut during daylight hours and only open up at sunset.

From sunset onwards, it's feasting time, with many hotels and restaurants putting on special Iftar (the Ramadan after sunset meal) menus, which need to be pre-booked due to high demand.

Businesses, including tourist sights and shops, are open, but keep shorter hours for the entire month.

A benefit of visiting during Ramadan is that the city is less busy than usual, as many Dubai locals decide to head on holiday during this month, and the city also receives fewer tourists.

Overlooking the Persian Gulf from its perch between Jumeirah's shore and the Palm Jumeirah , this stunning building has wowed architecture buffs since it opened in 1999. Its curved glass façade – modeled after the sails that have graced Dubai's waterways all these years – shelters a world-class, über-luxurious hotel located on its own human-made island. The hotel not only houses one of the tallest atriums in the world at nearly 600 feet high, but it is one of the tallest hotels in the world. Architecture aside, amenities include revolving beds in some suites, as well as a helipad, in case you thought arriving via a Rolls-Royce was too pedestrian.

You don't have to stay at the Burj Al Arab to enjoy it (and let's face it, most can't given that rooms start at $1,000 per night). Gain entry by booking an Inside Burj Al Arab Tour (249 dirhams or roughly $68) or by grabbing a bite at one of the on-site restaurants. Among them are Ristorante L'Olivo at Al Mahara, which features floor-to-ceiling windows guarding a massive fish tank, and the sky-high Al Muntaha, located on the scenic 27th floor of the building.

Skirting the Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai is every shopper's paradise. The massive Dubai Mall is one of the largest shopping centers in the world and houses more than 1,200 stores. Even if you aren't interested in buying anything, a visit to this immense retail center is a must: Dubai Mall contains numerous entertainment facilities, such as an ice rink, a movie theater and several kid-friendly attractions, including an aquarium that houses thousands of creatures. If you happen to be around at night, stop by the Dubai Fountain outside of the mall, at the foot of Burj Khalifa . Created by the team who designed the Bellagio 's famous dancing fountains, the fountain features nightly shows set to a mix of western and eastern music.

Visitors were taken by how much was at the mall – everything you could possibly need can be found inside its sprawling square footage. However, a few visitors were keen to point out that you'll encounter large crowds and high prices for goods. Still, many said that shouldn't stop you from popping in for a visit. Of course, if you're on the hunt for a taste of Middle Eastern culture, this isn't the place to experience it. It is, however, a great escape from the heat, according to travelers.

Jumeirah Mosque Jumeirah Mosque

Jumeirah Mosque is nestled near the shore in one of Dubai's older and most picturesque neighborhoods, Jumeirah 1. Its detailed sand-hued façade – which graces older 500-dirham notes – mimics the architectural style of the medieval Fatimid period. Unlike most of Dubai's other mosques, non-Muslims are invited inside to marvel at Jumeirah's ornate decor, featuring detailed painted panels with splashes of bright blue and yellow. Even if you're not religious, travelers strongly recommend a visit to this mosque for its educational value and cultural significance. Visitors also recommend arriving at the morning session to enjoy the Emirati breakfast that is served.

Along the Dubai Creek lies the Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood, the original heart and hub of Dubai before the modern skyscrapers began rising to the south. The charming little neighborhood houses the popular outdoor café, the Arabian Tea House, and several art galleries that feature the work of local and international artists, among others. Some of the restored buildings also include wind towers, which was an early form of air conditioning. The Dubai Museum is also located here.

Recent visitors found Al Fahidi to be a nice respite from the glitz and glam of modern Dubai, and enjoyed seeing what the city looked like before all of its developments came to fruition. Some recommend this as a good location to buy reasonably priced souvenirs. A few visitors warned against driving here due to traffic in the narrow streets and difficulty finding parking.

Burj Khalifa Burj Khalifa

Although we don't recommend experiencing it the way Tom Cruise did in "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," Burj Khalifa is a crucial item on any Dubai agenda. Rising 2,716.5 feet above the city (that's a whopping 160 stories), Burj Khalifa proudly holds the title of "world's tallest building." But that's not the only title this tower's got under its belt. Burj Khalifa is also the tallest free-standing structure in the world and home to the highest outdoor observation deck in the world. You know what that means: gorgeous views. Visitors are invited to ride the elevator to At the Top, one set of observation decks, on the 124th and 125th floors for breathtaking city vistas extending all the way out to the Persian Gulf. Once on your lofty perch, you can use high-powered telescopes and try other immersive and virtual reality experiences. You can also travel higher to the 148th floor, the world's highest observation deck, but it will cost you extra.

Traveler reviews were mixed for the world's tallest building. On the one hand, visitors say it's a must-see simply for its world-famous distinction. On the other hand, some found the attraction to be overpriced with lackluster views as well as suffering from long lines and disorganization. A few tips: If you decide to take a trip to the top, book in advance because tickets sell out quickly. If you can, schedule your visit around sunset: According to travelers, the spectacular views more than make up for the long wait to the top.

Expo City Dubai Expo City Dubai

Even if you were unable to visit Dubai's World Expo from 2021 to 2022, you can still visit the custom-built "city" that played host to it. Expo City Dubai remains an excellent family-friendly destination with plenty to see and do. In addition to restaurants serving global cuisine, there are a number of pavilions that cover various important topics such as sustainability, contributions from women and an organic farm. Don't miss Al Wasl Plaza, the city's captivating hub that features the world's largest 360-degree projection surface with light projections starting at sunset each evening.

Visitors recommended visiting Expo City Dubai in the cooler months as well as during holidays such as Christmastime and Ramadan, when there is holiday-inspired decor and entertainment taking place. Families agreed this was a good place to take children and that renting scooters help traverse the destination more easily. Visitors said they appreciated the mix of culture, technology and environmental aspects that were on display as well as its spectacular architectural features.

A trip here is a fascinating look into Dubai's past, with plenty of opportunities to haggle for supple pashminas, embellished slippers and reams and reams of exotic fabrics. It's a great opportunity to pick up something special for your home, such as cushions, foot rests, rugs and painted serving dishes.

When the glitz and glam of urban Dubai grows tiresome, visitors strongly recommend escaping to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. The UAE's first national park sits on the outer edges of the city, and occupies about 87 square miles of the Arabian Desert. The reserve acts as a research unit, but travelers are allowed to explore the area – with one caveat: visitors aren't allowed to tour the reserve by themselves. The interesting flora and fauna, as well as all of the fun activities, made the experience unforgettable for most travelers. Reviewers were keen to praise the staff, who they said made them feel comfortable and welcome as well as being knowledgeable. Many recommended the dune bashing and desert safari, described at times as "exhilarating."

Luckily, the park offers many different types of activities. Thrill-seekers can go sand boarding, dabble in archery or go dune driving on a luxury four-wheeler. Those looking for a more relaxed experience can soak up the spirit of the desert on low cushions in Bedu tents for a delectable dinner, or arrange for a private meal. There's also traditional camel treks, horseback rides and even a class on falconry. Visitors can also camp on-site, or retreat to Al Maha, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort and Spa at the end of the day.

Since its opening in 2008, Aquaventure Waterpark has been the UAE's premier destination for watery thrills. Following its 13.5-acre expansion in 2021, Aquaventure holds the title of world's largest waterpark at 55 acres, as well as the record for most water slides (50 total). There are more than 105 waterlogged activities in total. With that many attractions, there truly is something for everyone: a high-speed, near-vertical drop into seemingly shark-filled waters with the Leap of Faith; lazy rivers and lagoons; and numerous kid-friendly areas with slides and pools. There's even snorkeling, dolphin and sea lion encounters and an aquarium with more than 65,000 animals.

The wide variety of activities and rides were praised by recent parkgoers. Many recommended arriving early with the expectation to spend a full day at the park to make the most of it. They also suggest making a plan before you go to ensure you get to ride the slides you most desire, as lines can be long – although some advised purchasing an Aqua XPress ticket to bypass queues.

Dubai Museum Dubai Museum

Sitting near the  Bastakiya Quarter , the Dubai Museum offers visitors a glimpse of where this monumental city has been and where it's going. The museum occupies the Al Fahidi Fort, which is the oldest building in Dubai, previously used by the monarch and as a defense station. Today, the museum features a variety of wings dedicated to Dubai's cultural, historical and geographical landscape. Wander around and you'll find everything from goods sold in the 1950s, located in the markets wing, to information about the marine life that lies under the Arabian Gulf, appropriately located in the sea wing. There's also a folklore wing that will likely keep younger ones entertained, and a courtyard equipped with models of local boats and bamboo houses decorated with furniture used during that time period. 

Travelers recommend a visit if you're into history, or looking to beat the heat for an hour or two. Many said it was a "must-see" if it's your first visit to Dubai. 

Dubai Frame Dubai Frame

Rising 492 feet from Zabeel Park – and right between the gleaming skyscrapers of "new" Dubai and bustle of "old" Dubai – Dubai Frame stands as a symbol of the city's visionary spirit, bridging the gap between past and future. More than a towering landmark, this is also an exhibition that takes visitors on a journey through Dubai's past, present and future, showcasing "Old" Dubai through 3D projections and reveals "Future" Dubai through a tunnel vortex of special effects. "Present" Dubai, located high on the sky deck level, takes advantage of its location to showcase sprawling views of old Dubai – Bur Dubai, Dubai Creek, Deira – on one side and new Dubai – Sheikh Zayed Road and Downtown Dubai – on the other.

Recent visitors remarked that the "spectacular" views of the two sides of Dubai from the "Present" Dubai observatory were well worth the visit. They suggest buying tickets in advance to avoid a long wait to get inside, particularly in hotter months. Although some guests appreciated the informative aspect of this attraction, others noted that the main reason to visit was for the views as the educational and exhibits portion was a bit light.

Located along the shore opposite the Burj Al Arab , Wild Wadi Waterpark is a collection of 30 water rides and play areas designed for all ages. Juha, a character often referenced in Arabian folklore, is featured predominantly among the park. Thrill-seekers can slide down Tantrum Alley or the Burj Surj, while those looking for a little more relaxation can glide along the lazy river, Juha's Journey. There are also multiple moderate slide options, as well as Juha's Dhow and Lagoon water park just for the kiddos and the Wipeout and Riptide Flowrider, which is a thrilling simulated surfing ride.

Travelers overall say Wild Wadi is a guaranteed hit with kids of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers. However, despite all the fun-filled things to do, some found the park a bit too pricey and that it is in need of updates, especially when compared to Aquaventure. Reviews were mixed when it came to customer service.

"Surreal" is one way to describe Ski Dubai. Even when the city is enveloped in sizzling triple-digit temperatures, this massive indoor winter wonderland is never without fresh powder.

The Middle East's first indoor ski center, Ski Dubai boasts five ski runs (the longest of which spans more than 1,300 feet with a 197-foot vertical drop), a freestyle snowboard zone, a chairlift, as well as room for toboggan runs and snowball fights. Inside there's also the world's first indoor black run, ski lessons for all ages, as well as a penguin colony.

And if you're a real fan of marine life, a variety of animal encounters will get you up close with critters such as a crocodile, penguins or rays.

Recent visitors appreciated the helpful guides and note that children particularly enjoyed visiting to see the wide variety of marine life, calling the underwater tunnel "mesmerizing." Some travelers recommended including add-ons such as the Feeding Presentation or Otter Encounter to the visit to get an ever closer look at the animals. A few said the attraction was overpriced and felt that the free view from the mall was good enough.

Contrary to what you might have heard, Dubai is not all malls and flashy hotels. This sprawling desert city is always adding notable cultural institutions , galleries, and design-focused shopping , all focused on luring in a new generation of visitors . If you prefer an adrenaline rush, though, there's always the thrill of sliding between the high floors of a glass skyscraper, or jumping into the world’s largest dive pool. Almost anything is possible in this city, and we have a list to prove it: Here are our picks for some of the best things to do in Dubai, both longstanding and new.

Aura Skypool Arrow

This is the planet's highest 360-degree infinity pool, perched 200 meters atop The Palm Tower. Aura Skypool offers not only uninterrupted views of the emirate, but also a unique pool day experience. From 50 floors up, the sweeping views of The Palm, the Burj Al Arab, and the gulf beyond are an incredible way to see Dubai from above and alter your perspective. Tickets cost from about $46 per person for one of three sessions, and are best pre-purchased online .

Jumeirah Mosque Arrow

As the only mosque in Dubai that's open to non-Muslim visitors, the Jumeirah Mosque is popular with a range of travelers—it's also the most photographed. Easily one of the most beautiful in the emirate, it's crafted entirely from white stone in the medieval Fatimid style and particularly breathtaking at dusk. Visitors are allowed in six days a week (Fridays are for prayer), and tours are led by knowledgable guides who make the experience.

Deep Dive Dubai Arrow

This is the world's deepest pool with a depth of 60 meters. It boasts a sunken city for diving enthusiasts to explore and holds 14 million liters of water. Tailored entirely to water lovers, deep diving is for those with certifications only, while snorkeling on the surface and scuba-diving up to 12 meters can be undertaken by anyone over the age of 10. Given Deep Dive Dubai also acts as the region’s largest underwater film studio, packed with 56 cameras and the ability to create different moods, it is definitely a must-try experience. Tickets are required and can be pre-purchased or bought online.

Hatta Dome Park Arrow

Ideally positioned a walkable distance from the Hatta Wadi Hub, this is a desert glamping experience that immerses guests in nature, offering them dome-tented accommodation, incredible mountain views, and an abundance of outdoor activities at their doorsteps. Hatta is buzzing with nature lovers and active travelers seeking refuge from the city, and geared up to explore the mountain range. These luxe tents offer comfort and adventure in equal doses. Each has its own terrace, and there are fire pits, barbecues, and food vans just a short distance away. Stylishly furnished in desert-inspired tones, the dome suites have a minimalistic chic design and serve up not only starry evenings, but also panoramic views of the picturesque Hatta mountain range that surrounds them. Despite the reasonably remote location, each room has Wi-Fi and can comfortably sleep two adults and three children (under the age of 14).

Al Marmoom Camel Race Track Arrow

A popular heritage destination, Al Marmoom draws camel racing enthusiasts of all stripes, local and otherwise. A day at the camel races is an experience that is nicely representative of Middle Eastern culture, one that dates back to the 7th century. The grandstands are often filled with camel owners, trainers, and handlers, and most seats offer good views of the action. Remember that races start early—between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.—and that commentary and announcements are made in Arabic.

Ain Dubai Arrow

Officially the world's largest observation wheel, Ain Dubai is 75 meters taller than the London Eye. Towering over Bluewaters Island, the wheel affords sweeping views from 250 meters in the air. Not only is it visible from so many of Dubai's vantage points, this attraction appeals to just about everyone—schools, businesses, families, tourists, and locals alike. Rides on the structure are ticketed, with passes sold at the venue or online .

Dubai Spice Souk Arrow

Dubai's sprawling spice market is arguably the most entertaining of all the city's souks. It's bustling, with intoxicating sights and smells. Many of the vendors sell the same ingredients—Persian dried limes, saffron, barberries, rose hips, and traditional Middle Eastern spice mixes. Saffron, while still pricey, is more affordable here than elsewhere in Dubai. Part of a complex that features three Jumeirah hotels and an adjoining waterway, the souk has stalls selling everything from the spices, to handmade lanterns, clothes, souvenirs, and everything in between. There are also two-dozen restaurants, indoor and out, not to mention some of the most spectacular views of the world-famous Burj Al Arab hotel. It’s free to enter, but parking and abra-style water taxis cost extra.

The Dubai Fountain Arrow

The world's tallest fountain puts the ones in Vegas to shame. Multiple fountain shows are scheduled every day, shooting 22,000 gallons of water up 500 feet in the air within the 30-acre Burj Lake. Plus, a new floating viewing platform means you can get much closer to the action than before. Even better, it's free. If you visit the Dubai Mall , you'll likely see the fountains while you're there, so pause for a moment and enjoy the show.

Flying with Falcons by Balloon Adventures Dubai Arrow

In this private adventure experience, the only other person in your balloon is the pilot, who is an expert balloonist and falcon handler. Guests are picked up from their hotels and driven out into the desert. The aerial views of the desert are some of the most spectacular you'll see. Not only is the rolling landscape incredible but it is possible to see Oryx and camels strolling the desert below. This tour is ideal for a special occasion with a loved one or for those looking to experience the culture in a totally different way. Bookings are required.

Global Village Arrow

Dubai's massive Global Village is essentially a theme park for all ages, though it's popular with families as the rides and attractions are kid-friendly. Open Late-October to mid-April, it features concerts, rides, dining, and attractions from around the world. It's on the outskirts of Dubai, so don't think you can pack it into a city-centric day, but if you have time and are interested in some global shopping and entertainment, it's worth a visit.

Sky Views Dubai Arrow

High above Downtown Dubai, 219 meters up, Sky Views serves up a series of adrenaline-inducing one-of-a-kind experiences. Like so many of the experiences offered in Dubai, this incredible attraction is not for the faint of heart. Tread the 25-meter glass-bottom podium that connects the Address Sky View's twin 50-story dual towers; ride the outdoor glass slide; or tackle the Edge Walk, which is exactly as it sounds. Tickets are required but you can buy them online or at the venue.

Al Shindagha Museum: Perfume House Arrow

Positioned on the Dubai Creek within the recently renovated Al Shindagha neighborhood (once the traditional center of the emirate), the Perfume House offers the opportunity to travel back in time and discover the ages-old methods of Arabic perfume-making. You'll learn about the region’s perfume-trading route and explore the traditional oils and ingredients used to make local scents (including oud, saffron, and specific roses).

Kite Beach Arrow

Like a Miami beach with its wide stretch of sand, aquamarine water, beach chaises, and enough activities to make you feel like sunbathing isn't quite enough, Kite Beach is for beach lovers. Join a game of volleyball, give kite-surfing a try, or take a run around the soft running track—when it's not 106 degrees out.

Aquaventure Waterpark Arrow

Now considered the world’s largest waterpark thanks to its recent extension, the venue has expanded by a third. Trident Tower, its newest arm, features the largest kids-only waterparks in the Middle East—Splashers Lagoon and Splashers Cove. Aquaventure contains more than 30 slides and attractions, including the emirates' longest lazy river, some thrilling rides (including the Leap of Faith and Poseidon's Retreat), and a private beach. There are also record-breaking waterslides to get the adrenaline pumping; Splashers Park and the Lazy River for families; and opportunities that encourage up-close-and-personal interactions with stingrays, dolphins, and sea lions.

Legoland Dubai Arrow

Legos come to life at Legoland Dubai (sister to others across the world, including in Florida), where 60 interactive rides and 15,000 Lego models entrance the young and young-at-heart. Aimed at families with children between the ages of 2 and 12, the theme park was created from 60 million Legos and encompasses six lands, indoor and out. And now there is a Legoland Hotel that allows families to really immerse themselves in Lego for a weekend or overnight stay. In the heat of summer, the outdoor attractions can be a little too much to bear, but the indoor ones are just as good—and they're air-conditioned.

Skydive Dubai Arrow

If free-falling over Dubai at 120 miles per hour sounds like your idea of a good time, Skydive Dubai has you covered. Beginners are welcome to jump in tandem with the company's experienced guides, but licensed divers can take the plunge solo. A tandem flight from Skydive Dubai's location on The Palm costs nearly $600—but it's worth it if you're a thrill-seeker who's not afraid of heights.

The Dubai Mall Arrow

As the largest mall in the world, the Dubai Mall draws in almost 100 million visitors a year. It's easy to get lost—there are more than 1,200 shops, after all—but a great place to beat the Dubai heat and ogle at the luxury stores. The place draws in more tourists from around the world than both New York City and Los Angeles so it's safe to say, everyone comes here.

XLine Dubai Marina Arrow

Fly belly-down across highways, skyscrapers, and swimming pools through the city of Dubai with XLine Dubai, one of the longest, steepest, and fastest urban zip lines in the world. From a height of 560 feet with speeds up to 50 miles per hour, riders soar from the Jumeirah Beach Residence to Dubai Marina, passing once-in-a-lifetime views along the way. There's even an option to ride tandem with friends.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood Arrow

This quaint neighborhood offers a glimpse into what Dubai was like before the Emirates were formed in 1971. Traditional buildings crafted from stone, palm wood, gypsum, and teak line the twisted alleys and pathways—history and architecture buffs will love getting lost here. The neighborhood is a quiet retreat from the traffic and skyscrapers of the city, and the labyrinth of lanes make this place feel like you're in a secluded village.

Abra Ride Across Dubai Creek Arrow

Riding an abra, or traditional wooden boat, is one of the most low-key ways to get a feel for life in Dubai. The boats gather on either side of Dubai Creek—in Deira or Bur Dubai—and can carry about 20 people. Many locals use the boats to get across the creek quickly and to avoid traffic, but you'll also see lots of tourists, especially at dusk. Given that it's quick and cheap, an abra ride is a must if you plan on spending any time at all in Old Dubai or visiting the QE2 .

Al Seef Arrow

From its location within the emirate's cultural epicenter, Al Seef marries the city’s heritage with contemporary offerings. The 1.1-mile precinct that hugs the Dubai Creek is split into two areas: one dedicated to the past and another to the future. Meander through the charming laneways, stop and have a coffee or a meal at one of the many restaurants and cafes, or simply sit and watch the activity on the creek from one of the tranquil public spaces.

Ski Dubai Arrow

In the middle of a mall in the desert, the world's third-largest indoor ski slope is a sight to behold. A daily lift ticket will run you about $138 (excluding equipment rentals), while a Snow Daycation pass, which primarily provides access to the non-skiing parts of the mountain like tubing, costs $75 per person, and you should plan to get there early. The place is filled with families with kids, most of whom are taking part in various rides, penguin visits and the Snow Cinema instead of skiing. If you're here to shred, there are two runs and a dedicated freestyle area (but Vail this is not).

At the Top, Burj Khalifa Arrow

The world's tallest building is, unsurprisingly, visible from almost everywhere in Dubai. Taking in the site is thrilling enough from the street, but you can also visit the top of the 160-story behemoth—brace yourself for the thrill of the high-speed elevators, followed by complete awe the moment you step onto the observation deck. Buy tickets online in advance for a specific time slot. Most first-time visitors to Dubai go to the top.

Etihad Museum Arrow

This ultra-modern museum offers a comprehensive look at the formation of the seven Emirates that make up the UAE. It draws a diverse crowd of UAE nationals and history-buff tourists. The museum lies on the site where the country's unification was signed in 1971. The Etihad Museum isn't overwhelming in size or content. Even non-museum lovers will find the exhibitions interesting and crucial to a well-rounded UAE visit.

Dinner in the Sky Arrow

Dinner in the Sky Dubai is no ordinary restaurant—even pulling up a seat at the table requires that you clip a seatbelt. The experience takes place nearly 165 feet in the air, at a table that rotates ever so slowly over the course of an hour. If you can stomach the altitude, you're in for impressive views of the Gulf—and maybe one of the most unusual dining experiences on the planet. Artful Dining by Le Meridien Mina Seyahi and The Westin Dubai are responsible for the menu, which ranges from burrata salads to Middle Eastern mezzes. It's ideal for a romantic evening or surprise celebration with a first date, long-time partner, or best friend.

What to do in UAE

One thing that really bugs me is when people say “I don’t see the point of visiting the UAE, there’s nothing to do there…”

Well, on my first day there I wandered around the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (arguably my favourite mosque in the world), took in Picasso, Pollock and other world-class artists at the Louvre, acted like a big kid and went on all the rides at Warner Bros World before coming back to my hotel for a relaxing massage and an amazing dinner.

Nothing to do there? That was just one day in Abu Dhabi, let along the rest of the UAE!

Let me say this now, the UAE is an incredible place for your holiday. It really does have a little bit of everything (including an indoor ski centre in Dubai!)

So, if you’re thinking of exploring this part of the Middle East, here’s where I recommend what to do in UAE.

Abu Dhabi is the largest Emirate in UAE and it is the official capital too.

It is a city full of superlatives – it is home to the world’s largest hand-woven carpet, the world’s heaviest chandelier, the world’s fastest rollercoaster, the tower with the greatest lean. This is a place that certainly doesn’t mind breaking world records!

I’ve been to Abu Dhabi a couple of times now and I really like it there. The mixture of amazing architecture and high-adrenaline adventure activities in the UAE make it the perfect place to start your trip.

Marvel at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

I think the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is my favourite mosque in the world.

Even though this place is relatively new (it first opened in 2007), it has become a shining light for Abu Dhabi.

The mosque is completely free to enter (men must wear trousers, women must be covered) and is open from 9am till 10pm.

This is where you’ll find the world’s largest handwoven carpet (with a mammoth 2.6 billion knots) and the world’s heaviest chandelier weighing in at 12 tons. For me, this is one of the top places to visit in Abu Dhabi.

Take in the amazing architecture at The Louvre

The Louvre opened its doors in 2017 and it is the sister museum to the one in Paris.

Much like the one in Paris, the Louvre houses some incredible pieces of art from antiquity all the way to the modern day.

However, the building itself is like one giant display showcasing the amazing architecture in Abu Dhabi.

Outside it looks like a futuristic spaceship, but once you get to the main hall it really opens up into this stunning space that blends sharp edges with reflective water features. Just stunning.

Be a big kid again at WB World

This is another place that’s just opened up in Abu Dhabi and is one of the best tourist attractions in UAE.

Opposite Ferrari World (which is home to the world’s fastest rollercoaster), WB World Abu Dhabi is a bit more sedate. Saying that, there are some fantastic rides here and its fun for all ages.

Being a comic book fan, I really enjoyed ‘Gotham City’ which was home to the Batman and Riddler rides, but I also enjoyed ‘Bedrock’ with the Flintstones ride.

Also, WB World is all indoors so this is a great place to head when it gets too hot outside. WB World is one of the new places to visit in UAE and it’s perfect for families too.

Spot dolphins at the Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas

Yes, you really can see dolphins in the UAE!

While I was staying at the Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas, I went for an early morning walk along the beach and I was lucky enough to see dolphins backflipping right in front of my face.

They were literally 10 metres away from me just off the beach and they were putting on quite the show.

This really was one of the highlights of my trip to the UAE – hopefully you’ll see dolphins too. If not, you can always go for a swim!

Where to stay in Abu Dhabi – Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas

Even though Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates, it packs a big punch.

The beaches are beautiful here with hardly anyone on them, especially compared to those of Dubai. Also, the Corniche is a really popular place where locals like to bbq and have a picnic. Ajman is one of the most historic places in the UAE and it still has a number of customs and traditions there.

Learn about the pearl diving industry

Before the oil boom, pearl diving used to be one of the biggest industries in the UAE.

As the name suggests, this is where people used to dive for oysters to see if they had a valuable pearl inside them. Expeditions used to take weeks, and if a boat came back with a few pearls it was considered a success.

These days the pearl diving industry has changed and the best way of learning about it all is aboard the Ajman Pearl .

This is a tour that takes you around the mangroves of Ajman where you learn all about the history of pearls and how they’re grown.

Not only that, you also have the chance of opening up an oyster to see if there’s a pearl inside. If there is, you get to keep it!

When we cracked one open, nestled under the flesh of the oyster was the biggest pearl I’ve ever seen. I know it sounds set up but the pearl genuinely came from the oyster! No tricks or anything.

If you’re on your honeymoon or are on a romantic holiday then I’d really recommend this activity.

Enjoy lunch by the beach

This is one of the top things to do in Ajman. As I said, the beaches here are absolutely beautiful without any of the people.

While I was travelling in the UAE, we stopped off at the beach in Ajman for lunch and it was bliss. There was only one other family around, otherwise we had the beach to ourselves.

There are several beach huts you can sit in to avoid the sun (it was a tepid 38 degrees when I was there) and it’s very relaxed compared to the hustle and bustle of city life.

Dubai . It is a city that has it all.

From towering skyscrapers to crazy malls with ice rinks in them to beautiful beaches (often with a camel or two walking by!), there really is something for everyone in Dubai.

I’ve been to Dubai a couple of times now and it’s hard not to like the energy of the city. There’s always something going on at a million miles an hour and I love the fast-paced life there – it reminds me a little bit of London in that sense, just very hot!

With that in mind, here are some of the best things to do in Dubai.

Museum of Illusion

The Museum of Illusion in Dubai has just opened up in the summer of 2018 making it one of the newest places to visit in the UAE.

From mind-bending illusions to looking like a giant, this is good ol’ fashioned family fun. I can imagine it’s the perfect place to bring the kids.

They really encourage taking photos here and the staff even took a few so make sure you bring your camera along. Oh, and your sense of humour too!

Eat at Teatro in Towers Rotana

One of the places everyone said we had to eat at was Teatro in Towers Rotana . This is constantly ranked as one of the best restaurants in Dubai and it certainly did not disappoint!

The food is a fusion of east meets west so expect to find things on the menu like wasabi tempura prawns and miso-glazed seabass.

We had the sushi platter and it was delicious. Very authentic with their own sushi master and it was incredibly pretty too. It was food that looked good and tasted even better.

If you’re looking for an amazing place for dinner in Dubai then I’d really recommend Teatro.

Explore Dubai Creek on an abra boat

Here’s a little money saving tip for you. Abra boats are cheapest way of getting around Dubai with a one-way ticket costing just 20p.

Not only are they a cheap way of getting around, they are also great for seeing the city from the water. Also, this is such a traditional mode of transport that it feels very nostalgic too.

The best place to get an abra is near the Old Quarter and on Dubai Creek . The boats are very regular every 10 minutes and some leave before if they’re full. This really is such a good way of sightseeing Dubai!

Take in the skyline from Al Bandar Rotana

I’ll put my hand up right now and say I’m a sucker for a good skyline. Well, in Dubai they have one the world’s best.

I could spend all day roaming around Dubai in search of the best photo spots, but one of my favs is at the top of the Al Bandar Rotana.

Up on the 18 th floor you can grab a cocktail from Gusto Restaurant , sit on the terrace and watch the sunset. Or, if you’re like me, you can take photos of the sunset! Still, this really is one of the best views of Dubai.

Where to stay in Dubai – Al Bandar Rotana or the Towers Rotana Dubai

If you’re wondering where to go in UAE, let me introduce you to Fujairah. At times this place feels like it’s a million miles away from the other Emirates.

Not only do you get gorgeous beaches here, but you also get the Hajar Mountains in the background giving this an otherworldly feel. It wasn’t the Luna landscape of the Atacama Desert in Chile but it wasn’t far off!

If you’re looking for a place to really kick back and relax then there are a number of 5* resorts here.

Also, if diving and snorkeling are your thing then this is where you’ll find it in the UAE.

Here are some of the best tourist places in Fujairah.

Go snorkeling at Snoopy Island

The main place to go snorkeling in Fujairah is Snoopy Island.

This was a short 10-minute boat ride along the coast from where I was staying at the Fujairah Rotana Resort & Spa and it’s a really good snorkeling spot.

Snoopy Island is a large rock protruding from the sea and there’s a small reef surrounding this teeming with life.

Unfortunately we didn’t see any turtles but they are really common in the area. But we did see lots of other little fishes and it was a great way to spend an afternoon.

Take in the landscape while parasailing

I always love parasailing wherever I am around the world – it always reminds me of family holidays when I was younger.

So, when I saw you could go parasailing at Fujairah I signed up immediately. It was definitely one of my favourite things to do in the UAE .

One of the best things about going parasailing in Fujairah is the landscapes. You really get to see the Hajar Mountains from high up with the bright blue water glistening below. So much fun!

Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is quickly establishing itself as the adventure capital of the UAE. For me, this is up there with the best places in UAE so make sure you add it to your list.

Not only are there activities like jet skiing along the coast and hiking up in the Jebel Jais Mountains, but it is also home to the world’s longest zipline! This is an adventure activity like no other and it is such a rush.

Ras Al Khaimah is also home to a few all-inclusive resorts (bet you didn’t think you’d find them in the UAE!) That means if you’re looking for a proper holiday by the beach and the by the pool then you can’t go wrong with RAK. And yes, you can drink alcohol here. I told you it was surprising!

Ras Al Khaimah is one of the best places to visit from Dubai for people looking for a more relaxed state and a lazier beach holiday.

Take on the world’s longest zipline

Obviously I love my adventure activities and they don’t come much better than this.

So, how long is the world’s longest zipline? It’s 2.8kms where you reach speeds of up to 160kph and it is an adrenaline-pumping 2 minutes flying through the mountains of Jebel Jais.

You fly in the superman position facing forward, and once you reach terminal velocity it’s actually quite relaxing (I really mean that!) Also, it’s a great way to take in the beautiful scenery of the mountains too.

You can book tickets with ToroVerde Ras al Khaimah . We arrived on the day so you don’t need to book in advanced if you don’t want to. This is definitely one of the best new places to visit in UAE that’s for sure!

Enjoy beautiful sunsets at The Cove Rotana Resort

One of the best places you can stay in Ras Al Khaimah is The Cove Rotana Resort .

This is an all-inclusive resort that looks a little like the Santorini of the UAE.

The Cove Rotana Resort is based right on the beach and it has uninterrupted views of the sunset. This really is the best place to watch sunset in the United Arab Emirates.

Also, there’s a little beach bar right on the beach meaning this is the perfect place to be for those sundowner cocktails before a delicious dinner! What I would give to be back on the beach right now…

Exploring the coastline on a jet ski

Jet skiing is another one of those classic beach holiday activities that I love.

While I was staying at The Cove Rotana Resort I picked up a jet ski for the morning and zoomed along the coast.

Every time I go jet skiing these days it’s with my girlfriend on the back and she hates it when I go fast. From the sound of her screams I always push it too far but what can I say, it’s so much fun!

Where to stay in Ras Al Khaimah – The Cove Rotana Resort

Sharjah is seen as the most traditional and cultural of the emirates. This is the only one where drinking alcohol is strictly prohibited, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun here.

UNESCO declared Sharjah as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998, recognition reaffirmed in 2014 when it became Capital of Islamic Culture, so there’s plenty to see here.

Also, the skyline down by Khalid Lake is among the best you’ll find in the UAE.

When it comes to what to do in the UAE, I really recommend adding Sharjah to the list. It really is very different from the other emirates!

Drink traditional Arabic coffee

If you’ve never had Arabic coffee before then you’ve got to give this a go.

Arabic coffee is very aromatic and is often spiced with cardamom. Unlike other coffee, it is actually a greeny golden colour and is very bitter to drink.

Most of the time coffee is offered to guests when they arrive somewhere new and traditionally it is drunk for a small cup.

A word of warning – if you don’t shake your cup after you’ve finished it then your host will keep on filling it up until you do! Shaking your cup is a sign you don’t want any more coffee and we learned this during a traditional coffee ceremony when we arrived at Centro Sharjah .

Go for a sunset cruise on an abra boat

One of the best places to visit in the UAE is Khalid Lake.

Not only do you get the gorgeous skyline glittering in the water, but you also get to see the old and the new blended together with Al Noor Mosque nestled between the skyscrapers.

By Al Majaz Park there is a boat jetty where you can hire an abra boat to go on a little cruise of the lake.

We came down here at sunset and it was just beautiful – definitely the perfect time of day to see Sharjah and it was a little cooler too.

Where to stay in Sharjah – Centro Sharjah

Umm Al Quwain

If you’re wondering where to go in the UAE then take a look at Umm Al Quwain!

Umm Al Quwain is a tiny emirate wrapped around an island dotted lagoon and it’s really beautiful here.

This place has a bit of a retro feel to it as there aren’t any big international resorts or megamalls like you’ll find in Dubai, but because of that it has a distinct charm.

Across the creek, uninhabited Al Sinniyah Island is a protected marine environment noted for its mangrove swamp and large colony of Socotra cormorants. We also saw flamingos here too which was a nice added bonus!

Go kayaking through the mangroves

One of the best ways of seeing the mangroves up close is in a kayak.

Even though I didn’t see any turtles while kayaking in Um Al Quwain, it is very common to see them in the area. However, I did see flamingos though which was a huge surprise. I never thought there were flamingos in the UAE but I was completely wrong about that.

I went kayaking from UAQ Marine Club which is like an adventure club with loads of activities to choose from. Best thing about this is they’ve got a pool so you can go for a relaxing dip after kayaking.

Hiring a kayak is fairly cheap (100AED, £20) and I’d really recommend this to anyone passing through Um Al Quwain.

The Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah is the biggest artificial island in the world. Every tourist to Dubai definitely needs to see The Palm and visit one of its high-end restaurants and bars. Even better than just visiting the island it to stay there in one of its 5-star hotels, like Fairmont The Palm , Atlantis or Anantara . Visit it on this tour!

Gold and Spice Souk

The Gold Souk and the Spice Souk are five minutes apart, and both give an insight into what Dubai was like before the city boomed with skyscrapers and tourism. These souks (meaning market in Arabic) are located next to the Dubai Creek, and visitors can cross the water in an Abra , a traditional water taxi. At the Spice Souk, visitors can find the best spices in the region and at the Gold Souk, jaw dropping jewels.

Dubai Parks and Resorts

This thrilling amusement park is one of the newer attractions in Dubai, and is the perfect place for families. Dubai Parks and Resorts brings together three different parks — Motiongate, Bollywood Parks and Legoland. Adults and children alike can enjoy the rides, restaurants, concerts and events.

Who knew you could go skiing in the desert? Ski Dubai is one of the city’s most popular attractions. Not only does it offer the full skiing and snowboarding experience, but there are also penguins here! The skiing slope also has an ice park, in which to play and enjoy icy slides and snow fights. The mosque is mostly made of marble, and the walls and floors are embedded with colorful stones depicting flowers. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is also home to the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world, and massive crystal chandeliers.

Yas Viceroy

The Yas Viceroy Hotel is located in the Yas Marina Circuit, and visitors can see the Abu Dhabi’s incredible Formula 1 racetrack from the hotel. More often than not there are cars racing and practicing in the circuit, making the experience even more thrilling. Emirates Palace

Make a reservation at Le Café (it’s only possible to enter Emirates Palace with reservations) to try their famous gold cappuccino. Yes, the cappuccino at this unique cafe actually has real gold in it!

Ferrari World

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, Ferrari World is a must-visit attraction. The Ferrari-themed park is home to the fastest roller coaster in the world, Formula Rossa, which accelerates to 240km/hr in as short as five seconds. Other than this epic ride, the park is also full of exciting things to do, like a racing simulator, Ferrari car expositions, and even a ride that fully explains how to assemble a Ferrari.

Abu Dhabi Skyline

Made famous by the Fast & Furious 7 movie, the Abu Dhabi skyline is a sight to behold. When visiting Sharjah, this souk is an essential stop, as its beautiful bazaar-inspired architecture is quite a sight.

Sharjah Natural History Museum

When visiting the UAE, it’s very easy to fall in love with its artificial attractions and forget about the complex desert ecosystem that existed before all the tall buildings and expensive hotels started being built. The Sharjah Natural History Museum allows visitors to learn about the fauna and flora of the Arabian Desert. Visiting is a fun way to better understand the plants and animals that populated the UAE before the metropolises were built.

Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club

Via Ferrata

The Via Ferrata concept started in the Alps and it has been taken to Ras Al Khaimah. It involves a steel cable that takes people through a route alongside a mountain. For outdoor lovers and adventure seekers, Via Ferrata is a dream attraction in the UAE. Professional instructors guide visitors through a trail along the UAE’s tallest mountain. An adrenaline rush is guaranteed, with a 1km long route and three different zip lines for a real thrill.

Al Badiyah Mosque

When most people think of the UAE, they might think about the new and modern. However, the country is full of history, and visiting the Al Badiyah Mosque is the perfect way to see that. The small, simple mosque in Fujairah is the oldest in the UAE, built in 1446.

As Fujairah is the only Emirate on the East Coast of the UAE, its beautiful beaches are a must-visit destination in themselves. But even better than chilling by the beach all day is snorkeling. In the city center , right next to the Burj Khalifa, there is the Dubai Mall .

This huge mall is the most visited shopping center in the world!

The Dubai Mall is open every day from 10am until midnight . Restaurants and food court until 1am.

The Burj Khalifa is only accessible via the Dubai Mall on the LG level . You will need to follow the signs “At The Top Burj Khalifa”.

To get to the Dubai Mall , simply get off at the metro station of the same name . But don’t be surprised, you will have to walk about 10 minutes (inside) to reach the mall.

You need to cover your shoulders and legs in public places in Dubai. Signs of affection like kissing or holding hands aren’t allowed.

Dubai Museum is located in Bur Dubai, in Al Fahidi Fortress .

It traces the entire history of Dubai , from the first tribes who lived there through the economic boom in the 1960s, to the future plans for the coming years.

• Dinosaur Park, a park with several animated dinosaurs that move and growl. Kids will love it! It’s best to visit this park 1 hour before dusk and then go to the Garden Glow.

You can go to the top of this huge 150 meters high photo frame and enjoy a panoramic view over the 2 parts of the city: Dubai Old Town on one side and Downtown Dubai (the Burj Khalifa) on the other.

To make things even more exciting, part of the floor is made of glass . You can see everything that’s happening under your feet!

The aquarium is located in Dubai Mall .

You can admire one side of the shark aquarium for free in the shopping mall and need to pay for the rest of the visit.

Although the place is still under construction, it already offers a wonderful panorama over skyscrapers and the Burj Khalifa tower .

The financial district and its skyscrapers are one of the iconic places of Dubai.

For the 2 first days, you can follow the program I mentioned above . And for your third day in the city, you will have 2 options :

1) Spend 1 day in Palm Jumeirah to discover the Atlantis Hotel, the Lost Chambers aquarium and the Aquaventure Park (book here) . Don’t forget to go to The Pointe in the afternoon to admire the view!

In the evening, you should see La Perle , the most famous show in Dubai.

2) Explore Dubai Marina district

• Start the day with a walk along The Walk . You can also go for a swim or relax by the sea.
• Go to the Marina and head to Dubai Marina Mall
• In search of thrills? Then you should really try the amazing Dubai Zip Line , starting from the roof of a skyscraper!
• And if you prefer a more relaxing activity, you should instead opt for a cruise through the marina .

• Visit the Global Village and its pavilions from all over the world

• Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek : 5* hotel located in Deira bay. Double room with balcony overlooking the bay from 150€, breakfast at 29€. Strong points: The proximity of the metro and the shops, the beautiful swimming pool, the comfortable bed and the amazing view. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay in Old Dubai!

In every shopping mall or touristic place in Dubai, you will find dozens of restaurants offering cuisines from all over the world .

The hardest thing will be to choose one!

If you feel like dining on a terrace with a beautiful view , you should go to Madinat Al Jumeirah souk and eat in one of the restaurants along the canals.

La Mer or The Walk and The Beach are also great locations to enjoy a meal close to the sea.

As restaurants are quite expensive in Dubai, if you want to spend less money, you can also eat in the food courts of the shopping malls.

You will find the classic Mc Donald’s, KFC, Burger King etc.. as well as small fast foods offering Chinese or Indian cuisine for example.

The old districts of Dubai (Deira/ Bur Dubai) are also an excellent choice to enjoy “real” traditional cuisine at low prices!

7 – Sharjah Grand Mosque

Stepping away from the ultra-luxe and diving into the traditional and cultural side of this Arabian metropolis, the Sharjah Grand Mosque is one of Dubai’s most important (not to mention architecturally stunning) historical locales.

This beautiful house of worship was built in 2014 and can accommodate up to 25,000 worshippers at any one time.

With beautiful domes, chandeliers, and windows, as well as towering 60-meter-high minarets, this cherished landmark is brilliant inside and out.

Just be mindful that you dress modestly (think long pants/dresses and tops that cover your shoulders) out of respect for the customs.

8 – Dubai Creek

Hop aboard a traditional dhow cruise and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Aptly named after its palm tree-shaped outline, this massive manmade island juts out into the Persian Gulf and is home to an array of luxury hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, and top-tier Dubai tourist attractions.

One of the most popular things to do on the Palm is to take a ride on the Palm Jumeirah Monorail, which offers stunning views of not only the island itself but also nearby Burj Al Arab and Atlantis The Palm . Al Marmoom is the biggest camel race track in Dubai, sits right next to the Al Marmoom Heritage Village in the heart of the desert, and, best of all, is totally free to visit.

22 – Deira Clocktower

30 – The Dubai Mall

Enormous being an understatement, The Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping mall by total area, with over 12 million square feet of space (and fittingly located next to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa).

As well as being home to more than 1200 stores, 200 restaurants and cafes, an Olympic-sized ice rink with regular learn-to-skate programs, an indoor aquarium and underwater zoo, a kid’s edutainment center (KidZania), and much more, the mall also offers some incredible views of the Burj Khalifa from its outdoor terraces.

In other words? You could easily spend an entire day (or two) here and still not see everything!

Oh, and did we mention there’s a 25-meter-long, 155 million-year-old dinosaur skeleton too? Clearly, these guys don’t do things by halves.

31 – Love Lake – Dubai

Large enough that it can be seen from space (take that, Great Wall of China), Love Lake is quite simply one of the most unique attractions in the greater Dubai region.

A man-made lake located in the otherworldly Al Qudra Oasis, tucked away amidst the Al Salam desert dunes, the lake is shaped – you guessed it – like a heart; two large, interconnected hearts, in fact.

A little cheesy but romantic nonetheless, the area has been built up so that love is all around, with plants and flowers shaped in hearts dotting the leisurely walkway.

The lakes are open 24 hours for both visiting or camping, all up, offering both a pleasant and lovely escape from the hustle and bustle of typical Dubai life, and with more than 175 species of birds (not to mention the ducks and land-based wildlife), it’s a hidden gem well-worthy of a visit.

32 – Meydan Racecourse

Home to some of the lushest greenery you’ll find in the region, the futuristic-looking Meydan Racecourse , with room for more than 60,000 eager spectators, is one of Dubai’s most popular local sporting meccas.

As well as being a world-class horse racing venue (most famous for hosting the $30-million Dubai World Cup every March), the racecourse also offers several other activities and amenities, including a golf course, tennis courts, restaurants and cafes (the Winner’s Circle restaurant is all class), and – perhaps most impressively – a luxury hotel.

Races run from November through to April most years (avoiding the blaring summer heat), however, the facilities in the area are open year-round, including the opulent and 5-star Meydan Hotel (widely considered one of the best hotels in Dubai, with rooms that offer spectacular views of either the cityscape or racetrack).

33 – Dubai Safari Park

Of all the animal-focused Dubai attractions, Dubai Safari Park is constantly held alongside the best of the best, certainly being one of the most immersive.

A world away from your typical caged zoo environment, Dubai SafariPark is more like an African game reserve, with a huge number of animals (more than 3,000 all up, encompassing more than 250 species) residing in open, natural habitats that are as close to their natural homes as possible.

There are five main animal zones at Dubai Safari Park – the African Village, the Asian Village, the Arabian Desert Safari, Explorer Village, and Adventure Valley – each home to a different array of animals; think lions and tigers and bears (oh my!), giraffes and rhinos, komodo dragons, moon bears, baboons, Nile crocodiles, elephants, orangutans, and flamboyant flamingos (the list really does go on).

34 – Jebel Jais

A cruisey two-hour drive from Dubai, straddling the border of the UAE and Oman, Jebel Jais is the tallest mountain in the UAE, measuring in at a whopping 1,934 meters.

A popular spot for both locals and tourists alike, Jebel Jais has become somewhat of an adrenaline junkie’s playground over recent years, playing host to a number of exciting activities and attractions.

For starters, there’s the world’s longest zipline at almost 2800 meters (according to Guinness), which offers breathtaking views of the Hajar Mountains as you speed along at up to 150 kilometers an hour (93 mph); or the Jebel Jais Sky Tour, where the thrills are far more long-lived as you fly over the jagged mountain range on a dramatic five-kilometer-long, six-zip-line course.

35 – Etihad Museum

Full of insights into the local culture – both modern and traditional – the Etihad Museum is one of the newest Dubai attractions, having only opened in 2017. Located in Jumeirah, on the site next to the former Union House where the UAE was founded in 1971 (free tours of which, by the way, are available), this excellent museum dives into the history of the UAE through well designed and interactive exhibits that focus on a number of different sections of UAE history and culture.

As you walk in, you can’t miss the giant painting by Emirati artist Abdul Qader Al Rais that depicts the geography of the UAE; while other sections explore the Union’s founding fathers, showcase 3D documentaries about the founding years, and display artifacts like the signed union agreement itself and Sheikh Rashid’s passport.

Not too far away sits the Jumeirah Mosque and the Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai, two very different yet very popular tourist destinations each within walking distance.

36 – Dubai Autodrome

Craving that need for speed? You’ll find it in spades (and then some) at the Dubai Autodrome – one of the most popular things to do in Dubai for petrol heads and car enthusiasts.

With a capacity for 15,000 spectators, the 5-kilometer Dubai Autodrome circuit has hosted some of the world’s most prestigious racing events over its 15+ year history; think Le Mans Series, MotoGP, the UAE Procar Championship, and a whole lot more.

Besides being a spectacular venue for watching live races (check their website to see what’s on during your stay), the Autodrome is also home to Kartdrome – one of the best go-karting tracks in town where both kids and adults can race around like maniacs in electric go-karts. It’s been called the eighth wonder of the world, so it’s fitting that Palm Jumeirah makes our list of the UAE’s best islands. Each of its 30-plus luxury resorts is a destination in itself, but remain in their cocooning embrace and you risk ending up with a major case of fomo. This luxury playground is home to a dazzling array of high-end restaurants (Stay by Yannick Alléno and Trèsind Studio should both be on your list) and hard-to-get-into nightclubs. Or you can push your limits on the Odyssey of Terror, the world’s tallest waterslide – one of 50 at Atlantis Aquaventure waterpark, part of Atlantis, The Palm. But perhaps the best way to take in the Palm’s architectural beauty is from the air. 2. The World Islands, Dubai

Recreating the Earth’s landmasses on the waves was always going to be an audacious proposition, but The World Islands were constructed all the same – and some are open to visitors. Anantara World Islands Resort offers a unique experience in a country awash with superlatives; a short hop away is the adults-only Voco Monaco Dubai, part of The Heart of Europe collection of projects, inspired by the French Riviera. The first to open was Island Dubai on Lebanon island, with restaurants, water sports and beach activities. Estimated to date back to the 1700s, Deira is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Dubai. It’s also home to one of the emirate’s newest developments – the manmade Dubai Islands. Although still a work in progress, the area already hosts a mall and three hotels; the newest, Park Regis by Prince, has an AI concierge for tech fanboys. The area is also home to Dubai's only beach where dogs are allowed in the water. Overall, the development is one of the best places to enjoy a quiet beach day (whether or not you have four-legged friends in tow), minutes away from Dubai’s historic creek and bustling souks.

4. Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

An extraordinary experience awaits on Sir Bani Yas, the UAE’s largest natural island . One of eight desert islands in the Al Dhafra region, it was established as a wildlife reserve in 1977 by Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan, the first president of the UAE, and is now home to more than 17,000 free-roaming animals, including giraffes, hyenas, cheetahs, gazelles and Arabian Oryx. But animal safaris aren't the only outdoor experiences offered by the Anantara properties situated here. Already open to visitors are Louvre Abu Dhabi, which houses the region’s finest art collection, Berklee Abu Dhabi music school and Manarat Al Saadiyat, a centre for galleries and artistic exchange. Four more cultural experiences are on the way, all designed by world-class architects: Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, billed as an immersive journey at the intersection of art and technology. Abu Dhabi's Al Maryah Island is where you head for world-class shopping without the crowds. The island’s Galleria Mall contains a panoply of aspirational brands, from Jimmy Choo, Hermès and Dior, to Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier. Afterwards, take time to unwind at one of the many waterfront restaurants: Zuma, Nusr-Et, Almayass and the Michelin-stared 99 Sushi Bar are among the best.

8. Dalma Island, Abu Dhabi

Longtime UAE residents will tell you there’s not much to do on Dalma Island, 42 kilometres off Abu Dhabi’s westernmost coast. That depends on what you want to do, of course. Settlements here date back to neolithic times, and Dalma has been a significant pearling centre for centuries. There are at least 20 archaeological sites on the balloon-shaped island, and its principal museum sits in a century-old coral-and-stone building that was once the home of pearl merchant Mohammed Bin Jassim Al Meraikhi. There are also at least three ancient mosques, a desert water network that's hundreds of years old and several geological attractions. You’ll need to take the ferry or book a charter flight, and ring ahead to any attractions.

Four manmade coral-shaped islets make up Al Marjan Island complex in the northernmost emirate of Ras Al Khaimah . Their luxury hotels are set on a 7.8km stretch between the Arabian Gulf and the Yanis and Jais Mountains, but these UAE islands are also extra special for fans of outdoor activities and adventure sports, with Pullman, Double Tree and Hampton by Hilton hotels all offering activities such as parasailing, jet skiing, waterskiing and wakeboarding, flyboard and fly fishing, as well as deep-sea fishing adventures and scuba diving trips. Fittingly for Sharjah , the UAE's most arts-orientated emirate, Al Noor Island is a cultural retreat within the city. The manageable, child-friendly attraction sited within the Khalid Lagoon offers a relaxing day out. There’s a butterfly vivarium with 500-odd species, a literature pavilion, artistic installations everywhere and a programme of regular art events.

Cross over to the UAE’s underrated east coast for a change of scenery. Shark Island sits off Khorfakkan , an enclave of Sharjah. Home to sea anemones and turtles, it’s perfect for snorkellers, but there’s plenty for scuba divers too: moray eels, rays, Arabian angelfish and the blacktip reef sharks that give the rocky isle its name.

Off the coast of the least-visited emirate is unspoilt Sinniyah Island, a haven for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts. Its lush mangroves and shallow mudflats teem with birdlife, including migratory species such as flamingos and herons, as well as the endangered local Socotra cormorant. UAE residents likely to spend over Dh140 billion on outbound travel and tourism this year

Outbound spending by the UAE residents on travel and tourism will see a massive increase in 2024, according to a new report released on Wednesday.

The latest figures released by the World Travel and Tourism Council, outbound spending by UAE travellers is projected to grow 21.6 per cent to $38.31 billion (Dh140.6 billion) this year compared to $31.51 billion (Dh115.64 billion) in 2023. In 2019, UAE travellers' outbound travel and tourism spending was $28.7 billion.

The UAE's inbound and outbound travel and tourism have grown exceptionally in the post-pandemic period as countries reopened their borders for travel and tourism.

Ranked 15th, UAE residents will be the largest spenders among Arab and Middle Eastern countries this year. UAE travellers will spend more than those from Taiwan (China), Switzerland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Brazil.

Seeing a massive opportunity in this segment, the UAE launched a domestic tourism strategy in 2023 to capitalise on residents' growing outbound spending and focus more on staycations, especially during the summer. This would help expand the local economy and create a large number of jobs in the travel and tourism industry.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council's 2024 Economic Impact Trends Report released on Wednesday, international visitors' spending in UAE is projected to grow 9.4 per cent to $52.2 billion (Dh191.57 billion) in 2024 compared to $47.7 billion (Dh175 billion) last year. The UAE will be the 10th largest recipient globally and second in the region after Saudi Arabia (ranked 6th) in 2024.

Driven by Dubai, inbound tourism bounced back strongly in the UAE after the pandemic. In fact, the UAE was one of the first countries where the travel and tourism sector recovered to the pre-pandemic level.

We will continue to prioritise sustainability and inclusivity, ensuring that this growth benefits everyone and protects our planet for future generations. The sector's resilience and potential for innovation continue to drive us forward," said Julia Simpson, president and CEO of WTTC.

Regional & global

The Middle East's travel and tourism sector expanded by 25.3 per cent in 2023, bringing the sector's economic contribution back to its 2019 level. This amounted to $460 billion, or 6.7 per cent of the region's economy. Similarly, employment supported by the sector increased by 11.8 per cent to reach 7.7 million jobs. This represents a growth of 3.3 per cent over the 2019 level.

Saudi Arabia, representing around a quarter of the region's sector, has quickly recovered. Its sector's contribution to national GDP in 2023 was 29.1 per cent above the 2019 level. Similarly, the UAE's travel sector – the third largest in the region – experienced robust growth, with its contribution to GDP increasing by 14.3 per cent over the 2019 level.

Globally, the 2024 Economic Impact Trends Report revealed the US as the world's most influential travel and tourism market, contributing a record-breaking $2.36 trillion to the nation's economy last year.

The latest report from the global tourism body revealed China as the world's second most powerful market, with a GDP contribution of $1.3 trillion in 2023, underscoring its impressive rebound despite the late reopening of its borders.

Germany secured the third spot with a $487.6 billion economic contribution, while Japan, which was in fifth place in 2022, jumped to fourth position, contributing $297 billion.

The United Kingdom is among the top five countries, contributing $295.2 billion.
