  • Xcaret Park Review

The areas surrounding Cancun and the Riviera Maya feature plenty of things to see and do. There’s no shortage of parks and excursions for those who are looking to step out of the resort and do something fun and new. Despite all this variety, Xcaret Park has been the region’s most popular attraction for decades. In this guide and review, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about Xcaret Park and why people love it so much. By the end, you’ll be able to tell if this park is for you, and you’ll get tips to help you make the most of your visit to Xcaret.

What is Xcaret Park?

Xcaret Park (pronounced ish-kah-ret) is the biggest and most popular destination in the Riviera Maya of Mexico. It’s a huge eco park that features a wide variety of activities, shows, and exhibits which showcase the history, culture, and natural beauty of Mexico. It features animals, physical activities in a natural setting, and lots of exhibits and live performances. The full outline of activities & features will be mentioned in detail later on.

Who is it good for?

Xcaret is great for people of all types and ages. Families with children, couples, and groups of friends will all love Xcaret Park because it has something to offer everyone. As you read on, you’ll be able to tell if this experience is for you, but there are two points worth considering straight away.

First, the main draw of Xcaret Park is the various shows and exhibits. If you’re the type of person who prefers action and adventure, you may also want to consider other parks like Xel-Ha , Xplor , or Xenotes .

Second, Xcaret Park is huge, so plan to be there all day. If you get tired easily or you’re not interested in staying the entire day, you’ll miss a lot of the park’s offerings. In this case, you can check out the other parks I just mentioned above, as well as Xenses which is a half-day experience.

How much are tickets?

There are 3 different types of tickets. The charts below show the base prices before any discounts. A list of available discounts are below. You can check the Xcaret website for the latest prices.

Gives you access to the entire park and all its attractions. It also allows you to attend the night show.

Includes everything from the Basic admission plus a lunch buffet, snorkel equipment rental, and access to exclusive dressing rooms, washrooms and lockers. This is my recommendation because it’s cheaper than getting the Basic ticket and then buying food or paying for snorkel equipment rental separately. It also gives you access to the Plus section, which has exclusive dressing rooms, washrooms, and lockers that are centrally located. It makes your visit to the park easier and more enjoyable, so it’s the best value.

Includes everything from the Plus admission, as well as one optional activity: Adrenalina for a high speed ride in the sea; Snuba Family, a combination of snorkeling and diving; or Sea Trek, a walk on the seabed.

If you were planning to do one of the optional activities, then the Total admission is the best value. I’ll talk more about these optional activities later in this guide.

Xcaret Basic

  • Access to entire park
  • All exhibits, activities, and shows
  • Night Show - Xcaret Mexico Espectacular

Xcaret Plus

  • Night Show - Xcaret Mexico Espectacular
  • Lunch Buffet
  • Snorkel Equipment Rental
  • Access to exclusive lockers, dressing rooms, and washrooms

Xcaret Total

  • Everything from the Xcaret Plus admission
  • One optional activity
  • Choose from Adrenalina, Snuba, or Sea Trek

Xcaret Park tickets may not be cheap, but there are several discounts available that you can take advantage of (see below), and the park is amazing value for money when you realize how much there is to see and do.

Save on Xcaret Tickets

Xcaret Park offers several discounts:

  • Save 15% by buying your tickets online at least 21 days before your visit.
  • Or, save 10% if you buy your tickets 7-20 days before your visit.
  • Kids aged 5-11 save 50%.
  • Kids 4 & under get in for free.
  • Save 20% on your purchase of tickets for 2 parks or tours.
  • Save 25% on your purchase of tickets for 3 parks or tours.

Where to buy Xcaret tickets

I suggest buying your tickets online directly from the official Xcaret website. It’s secure and the prices are always cheaper than what travel agents or local vendors will charge. When you buy online, the early booking discount and childrens’ discount will automatically apply if you meet the above mentioned criteria.

You can buy your Xcaret tickets from the official website here:

Attractions: Activities, Exhibits, and Shows

Xcaret Park is huge, there’s so much to see and do (over 50 attractions), that chances are you won’t get to experience everything in one day. I’ll share the highlights so you understand what the park is all about, but there are lots of “secrets” and surprises scattered throughout the park which are best left to be discovered during your own visit. You can also watch the video review from my visit in 2019.

Throughout the park, you’ll come across various animals like jaguars, deer, flamingos, macaws, stingrays, manatees, crocodiles, sharks and sea turtles. Some animals roam the park a little more freely that you’d expect. They also have exhibits like the bird aviary which features toucans & eagles, a butterfly pavilion, and a coral reef aquarium.

I want to address the topic of animals in captivity. When I published my review on YouTube, I received a number of comments expressing concern & distaste for the animals that are held in captivity at Xcaret Park. I consider myself a proponent of animal rights, and I didn’t have an issue with captive animals at Xcaret. They all seemed happy and healthy, and their enclosures were large, often mimicking their natural habitats. Plus, I know that Xcaret does a lot of conservation and rehabilitation work with species like sea turtles and macaws, so I have confidence that the animals at Xcaret are well cared for.

Ancient Archaeological Sites

The ancient archaeological site of Xcaret is located within the park. Many of the ancient structures lie within the park and are available for visitors to explore. Most of the structures date back to 1200-1550 AD, but some date back as far as 200-600 AD. Needless to say, these are REAL mayan ruins, not replicas, so it’s a great chance to get up close and experience some history.

Beach & Natural Pools

The Xcaret beach is pretty nice, and is a great place to relax after a busy morning exploring the park. It’s located in a bay so the waters are calm & clear, making it a safe place for children. There are plenty of nice beaches throughout the Cancun-Tulum corridor, so the Xcaret beach probably shouldn’t be a major reason for your visit, but it’s one more thing to check out when you visit the park. They also have natural pools. These are set up right next to the ocean, so the waves of the ocean bring in salt water, allowing you to swim or soak in salty sea water.

There’s another bay where you can go snorkeling. I didn’t try this out myself because I’ve done snorkeling at Xel-Ha , but it seemed like a nice little activity that helps you cool off. Snorkel equipment rental is included if you have the Xcaret Plus or Total admission . If you bought the Xcaret Basic admission , you’ll need to rent the equipment for a small fee.

If snorkeling really interests you, then you may want to visit Xel-Ha because that’s the main draw of the park. Otherwise, if you just want a quick snorkeling experience, this is a good opportunity to try it.

Underground River Swim

There are beautiful rivers that run from one end of the park to the other. The landscape differs from underground to open air parts. They’re all beautiful, which makes this one of the must-do activities at Xcaret. It’s a long swim and can be a bit tiring, but there are several exits throughout the way. There’s a rope alongside the river that you can hold on to, or pull yourself along. They also have lifeguards patrolling, so you should be able to explore the river, even if you can’t swim. Tip: At the entrance of the river, they have bags to secure your belongings. The bags are locked in front of you, and you’re given the key. The bags are delivered to the end of the river, once you’re done swimming, you give them your key and they unlock the bag in front of you. It’s super safe and convenient. The bags may get moved around or piled on one another, so if you have fragile items, you’ll be better off placing them in a locker.

Paradise River

They also have a raft tour that takes you along another river. It’s a slow, quiet, and relaxing boat ride that allows you to see the flora and fauna of Xcaret.

I didn’t get to do this during my visit, but the videos I’ve seen look beautiful. I’ll definitely do this on my next visit to Xcaret.

Scenic Tower

The rotating scenic tower is 262 feet (80 meters) tall, and will give you a great view of Xcaret Park, the nearby resorts, and the Riviera Maya. This was another activity that I didn’t have time to do, but some friends who have done it say it’s pretty cool and checking out on a clear day.

Children's World

This is a special section of the park for children under 12 years of age. It features water slides, cenotes, tunnels, climbing nets and other obstacles. For younger children, they have a wading pool, sandbox, and more. There’s a rest area for parents which allows them to keep an eye on their kids. There’s also a snack shop, change rooms, and washrooms. For safety & security, life jackets are mandatory, there are lifeguards at each body of water, and there are security cameras.

Mexican Culture & History

The culture & history of Mexico is proudly showcased at Xcaret. There are sections of the park dedicated to this, like the mayan village which features REAL handmade arts & crafts, a chocolate workshop, a Mexican Cemetery, and more.

Xcaret Park Cemetery

Shows & Performances

Mexican culture & history is also presented through various shows & performances. Xcaret features everything from a horse exhibition to an ancient Mayan style dance show.

There are many different shows scheduled during the day, you can check the showtimes on information boards throughout the park. Depending on where you are or what you plan on doing in the park, you may not be able to catch every show that interests you, but don’t worry. Most of these performances are also featured during the night show, so you don’t need to go out of your way to catch every show.

Night Show- Xcaret Mexico Espectacular

Cap off your day Xcaret Park by checking out the night show, which is called “Xcaret Mexico Espectacular”. The show is centered around Mexican history and culture; it takes you through the history of Mexico, from the pre-hispanic to colonial times. In the latter half, it showcases the vibrant and diverse culture of various Mexican states. The show starts at 7PM and lasts about 2 hours. It really is spectacular, the production value is very high; costumes, props, and stages are very well done. They probably have hundreds of people on stage throughout the night, featuring a lot of talented dancers, singers, and performers. Overall, the night show was very impressive.

Food is not included with the night show, but you can buy snacks and drinks at concession stands before the show. You can also buy a 7 course meal to enjoy during the night show (that’s one of the optional activities, which I’ll talk about in the next section). All tickets, even the basic ones, include the night show, and I highly recommend staying to see it.

Tip: The show starts at 7PM, but get there at least 15-30 minutes before if you want a good seat. You can also use that opportunity to grab some snacks from the nearby concession stands.

Optional Activities (Extra Cost)

There’s no shortage of things to see and do at Xcaret Park. However, there are optional activities that you can add on for an additional fee to really customize your experience.

Those are thing like:

  • Andrenalina speed boat
  • 7-course meal during the night show
  • Dolphin experiences
  • Paraxute (parasail)
  • Shark encounter
  • Stingray encounter
  • Snorkeling tour

It should be obvious by now that Xcaret Park is huge; there is plenty to see and do in one day, so you don’t need to pay for additional activities to have an action packed day. However, some of the activities are really cool bucket list items, so you may still want to check them out. If you plan on doing one of the optional activities, get the Xcaret Total admission because it’ll be cheaper than paying for the activities separately.

That’s a summary of the major activities & attractions of Xcaret Park. Each exhibit/section of the park is packed with interesting details that go beyond my short summary, so it really should be seen for yourself.

Food & Drinks

Unlike other parks like Xplor or Xel-Ha , Xcaret is not all-inclusive. This means you’ll have to pay for food and drinks. If you get the Xcaret Plus or Xcaret Total admission, you get a buffet meal included. They have several restaurants to choose from, they’re all-you-can-eat buffets with different themes (e.g. seafood, Mexican etc.), but they all feature a wide variety of food, so they’ll appeal to every taste.

I ate at El Manglar, which was close to the ocean with a nice view. The speciality at this buffet is their seafod & ceviche, which is great. They also have a nice selection of drinks, snacks, and desserts.

There’s a-la-carte restaurants and snack bars if you don’t have food included with your ticket, or if you get hungry and want to grab snacks or drinks.

You can’t bring food into the park, but you’ll probably get away with a small snack bar and water bottle. You can re-enter the park, so if you drove, you can keep food in your car and have a quick lunch in the parking lot.

Photo Package

If you add the Photopass, you can scan your bracelet at designated photo points throughout the park which will allow you to take unlimited high-quality photos. When you’re done with your visit, you simply download your photos online. It’s a great option if you don’t want to carry around a camera all day, and the park’s cameras have some unique vantage points that you can’t access yourself.

TIP: Up to 10 people within your group can share one photopass, as long as you’re all under the same purchase transaction. So add the photopass when buying tickets for your entire group.

Transportation

You can add the transportation option for easy pick-up and drop-off. The cost varies based on the distance from your hotel to Xcaret, but it’s a reasonable rate and super convenient. It’s a big, comfortable bus with Xcaret branding all over, so it’s easy to spot. The transportation option is a safe and easy way to get to the park and back.

If you’re looking to make the most of your day at Xcaret, you may want to get there early to beat the crowds. In that case, you can easily get to Xcaret by car or taxi.

Tips for your visit

Since Xcaret Park is so large and offers so much, it’s best to take note of a few things that’ll help you make the most of your day.

You’re going to be doing a lot of walking, so if you’re bringing a bag with you, try to keep it light and carry just the essentials. If you’re thinking of leaving extra things in a locker, you should know that it might be a bit of a walk from where you are in the park, so packing light will make things a lot more convenient for you.

For example; I placed my towel in my locker so that I wouldn’t have to carry it around all day. Once I got out of the river, I realized that I would have to walk halfway across the park to get my towel from the locker, so I decided to lay on the beach chairs and dry off under the sun. For that same reason, I also didn’t bother bringing shorts, I just wore my swimming trunks all day.

Lockers are available to those who bought the Xcaret Plus or Total admission. Xcaret Basic ticket holders need to pay US$5.99 to rent a locker.

The water activities have places where you can lock up your stuff. At the entrance of the river, they have bags that you can drop your stuff into. The bags are locked in front of you and delivered to the end of the river. Once you’re done with the river swim, you give them your key and they unlock the bag right in front of you. It’s safe and convenient, I left my phone & wallet in there and had no issues. Just avoid placing fragile items in the bag, because they’re usually stacked on top of eachother.

Navigating the park

Despite the size of the park, it’s really easy to get around. There are 6 colored routes on the map to guide you through the different sections of the park. That same colored line is on the pavement that you walk on, so you’ll easily be able to tell if you’re on the right path without having to constantly check the map. (map)

Plan your day, or don’t

If you want to make the most of your day, study the map, decide what shows or attractions you want to see most and plan your day around them. You probably won’t catch every show, so prioritize whatever you consider a must-see. OR Just go explore and see where the day takes you. Even if you don’t see and do everything, Xcaret is still an amazing experience. Plus, some of the shows during the day are also featured at the night show, so if you miss them during the day, you can still catch them later on.

  • For the water activities, you do not need to know how to swim. They offer life jackets and they have lifeguards patrolling. For the river swim, they also have a rope alongside the river that you can hold on to.
  • Change rooms are available for everyone.
  • If needed, you can rent lockers, towels, wheelchairs, strollers, and snorkel gear.
  • The park is fully wheelchair and stroller accessible. Some sections of the park may pose difficulties such as narrow paths, slippery surfaces or steep slopes, which means you’ll need to take a different route. Refer to the wheelchair map (PDF link) for details.
  • If you’re visiting with young kids and plan to stay for the entire day, it might be a good idea to plan a nap time for them. There are lots of areas around the park where you can lay down on some hammocks or beach chairs and catch a quick nap. The beach and the sandy area near El Manglar restaurant are two of the easiest spots to find. You’ll also stumble upon a few quiet areas scattered throughout the park where you can catch a break.
  • Get to the night show about 15-30 minutes early if you want to get a good seat. You can also use that opportunity to grab some snacks from the nearby concession stands.
  • If you’re staying in Cancun, you can get a free admission to the Cancun Scenic Tower with your Xcaret bracelet.

What to pack

  • Aqua shoes/water shoes- Helpful but not necessary. You can wear sandals or shoes and take them off for the water activities, and store them in the provided lockers or bags. Just wear something comfortable to walk in, because you’ll be doing a lot of that.
  • Eco-Friendly Sunblock & bug spray- In order to avoid damage to the local ecosystem and marine life, these products must be eco-friendly and/or biodegradable. If they’re not, they’ll take away your sunscreen and return it at the end of the day. They give you a small sample of biodegradable sunscreen at the door, and you can purchase the appropriate sunscreen from the park.
  • Towel- There’s some water activities, so bring a towel if you want to dry off quickly, otherwise if you want to travel light, you can always dry under the sun. You can also rent or buy a towel if needed.
  • A change of clothes
  • Cash or credit card, and ID

How to save on tickets

There are so many amazing things to see and do at Xcaret, so it’s an amazing value for money and totally worth it. That being said, tickets are not cheap, so I suggest buying your tickets from the official Xcaret website and taking advantage of the discounts they offer.

There are three different types of tickets you can buy:

Buy your Xcaret tickets here:

How to get to xcaret park.

Xcaret park is located south of Playa del Carmen, on Chetumal – Puerto Juarez Federal Highway km 282, in the state of Quintana Roo.

It’s located 15 minutes (4 miles/6KM) south of Playa Del Carmen. It’s about an hour south of Cancun (45 miles/74KM), and 45 minutes (35 miles/57KM) north of Tulum.

Xcaret Park is open Monday to Saturday from 8:30AM to 10:30PM. If you booked the transportation option, you’ll be picked up at a set time, so check your ticket for the pickup times.

Nearby hotels & accommodations

If you’re looking to stay at a hotel or resort that’s close to Xcaret Park, you have two options.

Occidental at Xcaret Destination

Occidental at Xcaret Destination is located right beside Xcaret Park, so you can walk over. It’s a highly rated resort offering great service and amenities, but the most unique thing is their Unlimited Xcaret Xperience package. Hotel guests can opt to add this package, with which you can enjoy unlimited access to Xcaret Park during your stay. You’ll need to check the latest rates with the hotel, but at the time of writing this, it’s approximately $200 for adults and $150 for kids. This is a good deal if you plan to visit the park multiple times during your stay at the hotel, but if you only plan to visit once or twice, it’ll be cheaper to buy your ticket directly from Xcaret.

Hotel Xcaret

The word Xcaret is sometimes used interchangeably to refer to either Xcaret Park or Hotel Xcaret. While they are separate properties, they are owned by the same parent company, Grupo Xcaret.

Hotel Xcaret is located near Xcaret Park. It’s a top-rated resort with amazing amenities and top-notch service. It’s also what they like to call “All-Fun Inclusive”, which means that during tour stay at Hotel Xcaret, you get unlimited access to all the group’s parks like Xcaret Park, Xel-Ha , Xplor , and more.

You’re not limited to these hotels though, remember that there are a plethora of hotel & resorts throughout Cancun and the Riviera Maya, so you can stay pretty much anywhere and still visit the park.

Xcaret Park Mexico

I absolutely loved Xcaret. There’s so much to see and do, it’s easy to see why it’s the most popular excursion, activity, or park in the Riviera Maya (or even all of Mexico for that matter).

It showcases Mexican culture, history, animals, activities, and attractions into one perfectly packaged park. And it’s not just the size that impresses, it’s how the experience is delivered. Every single detail is well thought out and carefully executed to ensure you have the perfect experience. It allows you to see all the wonderful things about not only the Riviera Maya, but Mexico as a whole. There’s something for everyone here: old, yo ung, single, couples, or families- there’s enough variety here that everyone will finish the day with their own unique & amazing experience.

My day at Xcaret Park was filled with awe. Even though I was getting tired from walking under the sun all day, I wanted to keep going so I could explore every inch of this paradise. I highly recommend Xcaret Park for families and groups who want to spend a day in a beautiful natural setting, experiencing something wonderful.

Xcaret is overrated. The pathways are too narrow for even small crowds. Theme parks, water parks, and zoos in the USA have much wider pathways (at least twice as wide). Kid’s world is too dirty, looks like a swamp instead of a cenote. The Grand Tlaxco theater is TOO hot and humid, prepare to sweat your xxx off. Please add some fans.

Xel-Ha vs Xcaret: Which Park Should You Pick?

So, you’ve booked your Mexican vacation and you’re looking for things to do in Cancun and the Mayan Riviera? Maybe you’ve already decided to spend a day at one of the many Riviera Maya theme parks. You may have even narrowed it down to X el Ha vs Xcaret . But how do you decide which one?

Having spent many months in this beautiful part of the country we can tell you from personal experience that spending a day at one of the Experiencias Xcaret Parks is a must. But, which adventure eco-park should you pick?

There are now seven amazing Xcaret Cancun theme parks: Xplor, Xel-Ha, Xcaret, Xavage, Xoximilco, Xenses, and Xenotes but the original theme park of Xcaret and the adventure water park of Xel-Ha remain the most popular.

Both parks are great fun but they do have different perks that may make one better suited to your needs. As we have been to both adventure parks more than once we’re in good shape to help you decide between Xcaret or Xel Ha.

Xel Ha vs Xcaret Overview

Sarah standing behind a rock Xel Ha sign at the water park in Riviera Maya Mexico

Both theme parks are beautifully set in the middle of Yucatan nature and are definitely some of the best things to do in the Mayan Riviera. They both offer a full day of relaxation, food, and fun and they’re each located an easy day trip from Cancun or Playa del Carmen.

But, they are definitely different experiences, each with its own theme and special qualities. So, Xel Ha or Xcaret, which one will appeal most to you? Here’s an overview of both parks.

What is Xcaret Eco-Park?

Xcaret (Esh-ka-ret) Park, Mexico was the first-born of the Experiencias Xcaret family and is probably the most diverse. If the aim is to give a taste of everything the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico has to offer then they have absolutely succeeded.

Every bit of this 200-acre theme park is full of wonderful things to do and it manages to be fun and educational all at once. It’s like a massive, educational playground!

  • Tulum to Xel Ha: 18 km
  • Tulum to Xcaret: 58 km

Luxury bus transportation can be added to your ticket purchase for $30 USD ($27 if you book in advance) and you will be picked up and returned to your hotel or central meeting point. It is usually the most convenient option and will be much cheaper than a taxi (unless you are staying in Tulum)

The regular ADO bus line goes to both parks from Cancun and Playa del Carmen and so do Collectivos (vans which run up and down the main 307 Highway). These will be the cheaper option but will generally take longer than the luxury bus or taxi)

Taxi is really only an affordable option from Tulum to Xel Ha or Playa del Carmen to Xcaret. Any other routes would be $80-$100 USD one way.

If you have a car it’s an easy drive and parking is free.

Overall Comparison of Xcaret vs Xel Ha

Both parks are awesome but there is definitely a difference between Xel Ha and Xcaret as we have shown.

Xcaret is slightly more expensive, especially once you add in the food and drink costs. However, the park is open longer and there is a much bigger variety of things to do. The Xcaret Mexico Espectacular show is really worth the price of admission itself. If you want to learn more about the history and culture of Mexico and like to have lots of options for activities then Xcaret may be your preference.

Xel Ha is all-inclusive which makes it more affordable overall and it’s always nice to be able to eat and drink what and when you want without worrying about cost. If you love nature, marine life, snorkeling and other water activities and want to have more relaxation time in paradise then Xel Ha may be the park for you.

Still Can’t decide between Xel Ha and Xcaret?

If you have the time and money then do both parks! They really are different enough experiences that you would not find them repetitive at all. If you decide to go to both parks you can get a discounted combo price through the link below.

At the risk of making the decision even more difficult, there are more Xperiencias Xcaret parks in the Riviera Maya of Mexico. If you love adventure and adrenaline-pumping activities take a look at Xplor . Take a journey of the senses with Xenses or visit mystical cenotes with Xenotes .

Xcaret is a fascinating eco-cultural park that offers an abundance of activities providing a lot of fun for everyone. Here, visitors are surrounded by ceremonies, sounds, cultural events, tastes, rituals and ecological pursuits of Mexico.

Water activities are everywhere and include a beach, snorkeling, tubing or swimming underground rivers, beautiful beach coves and a scenic inlet. Swims with nurse sharks, stingrays, manatees and dolphins are optional at an extra charge.

Those with ecological interests enjoy exploring the mushroom, and stinger-less bee farms and the Natural Museum of orchids and bromeliads. Xcaret’s Aquarium, fed by ocean water, offers a myriad of fascinating sea life displays including sea turtles. Xcaret also boasts a Regional Wildlife Breeding farm with incredible local species and breeding programs of such species as the beautiful green and red macaws. Free ecological and cultural tours are available for those yearning to have more detailed information about their local surroundings.

If you are a history buff, several ancient, protected Maya archaeological vestiges exist on site, complete with their own tour and guide. Both of Xcaret’s Chapels, one on ground level next to a beautiful Hacienda and the Museum of Mexican Folk Art, are “must see“; well worthy of appreciation, worship, weddings, and special celebrations. Five restaurants offer a variety of international cuisine; and quaint shops, scattered about, satisfy the cravings of the dedicated shopper.

There is much to see and much to do at Xcaret, but nothing surpasses its ability to entertain. Xcaret’s exquisite Night Show is chock-full of excitement, history, song and dance, color and culture, as are the day shows all over the park.

Xcaret is exciting, fun, inspiring and impressive! To enjoy a taste of what Mexico has to offer, Xcaret has it all.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico Review: Quick Overview

First, let me start by saying that this Hotel Xcaret Mexico review was not sponsored and all opinions are my own.

Here’s a quick overview of the pros and cons that I’ll discuss further in this post:

Emerald Lagoons at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

  • Expensive: Hotel Xcaret Mexico is definitely on the pricier side compared to other all-inclusive resorts in Riviera Maya.
  • Rocky Beach: The resort’s private beach is quite rocky and not ideal for swimming, but the lagoons make up for it.
  • Large Property: The resort has over 900 rooms spread out over an expansive property making it easy to get lost.
  • Basic Room Service Menu: The room service menu is fairly limited and not as impressive as the dining options at the restaurants.
  • Limited Nightlife: While the resort does offer nightly entertainment, it’s definitely not a party destination.

Is Hotel Xcaret Mexico Worth It?

In my opinion, Hotel Xcaret Mexico is definitely worth it if you’re interested in visiting any of the Xcaret parks. This is by far the biggest perk of staying at the hotel and is a HUGE value for families!

As part of the hotel’s “all fun-inclusive” concept, you get unlimited access to all Xcaret parks and tours .

This includes Xcaret , Xplor , Xplor Fuego , Xel-Ha , Xenses , Xoximilco , Xavage , Xenotes , Xichen , Tulum , and Cobá , which are some of the best eco-parks in Mexico.

Yes, Hotel Xcaret Mexico is a pricier option compared to other hotels in Riviera Maya, but it’s a 5-star hotel and you definitely get what you pay for.

And when you consider the luxury accommodations, exceptional service, access to parks, airport transportation, and gourmet dining included in your stay, you’ll quickly see why it’s worth it.

They make everything so convenient and easy for you that you can truly relax and enjoy your vacation without worrying about additional costs or planning.

Plus, they run frequent promotions where you can often score a discounted rate. Be sure to check the Special Offers page before booking!

Overall, Hotel Xcaret Mexico is a fantastic choice for families looking to enjoy a luxury all-inclusive vacation in Riviera Maya and experience the best of what Mexico has to offer.

However, if you’re not really interested in visiting the Xcaret parks, you may want to consider other less expensive options in the area.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico: Pros

Hotel Xcaret Mexico definitely has more pros than cons! These are some of the best things about the hotel:

✅ Free Access to the Xcaret Parks

The best thing about staying at Hotel Xcaret Mexico is that guests receive an “all-fun inclusive” experience, meaning you get free access to the incredible Xcaret parks and tours!

There are 11 Xcaret parks and tours each offering unique adventure experiences, from underground rivers to ziplining to ATVs. They are incredibly fun and perfect for families!

The “all-fun inclusive” concept gives you unlimited access to the Xcaret parks: Xcaret , Xel-Há , Xplor , Xplor Fuego , Xenses , Xoximilco , and Xavage .

You also have access to the Xcaret tours: Xenotes , Xichen , Tulum , and Cobá . Plus, transportation is included so you can utilize the free shuttles to get there.

🦜 Check out my Xcaret Resource Hub for comprehensive park reviews and comparison guides!

Park tickets can be $100-$200 USD per person if purchased on their own, so this is a huge value add if you have any interest in visiting the Xcaret parks.

The Xcaret parks are some of the top attractions in Riviera Maya and ones that I would highly recommend!

You also get free tickets on Xcaret Xailing –Grupo Xcaret’s new luxury ferry service to Isla Mujeres .

I personally went to Xplor Fuego while I was staying there and it was so easy–all you have to do is hop on the shuttle and it will take you right to the park!

You can even hit up multiple parks in one day if you want! Definitely take advantage of this perk because it’s the best part of staying at the hotel.

✅ Free Airport Transportation

Another amazing perk of staying at Hotel Xcaret Mexico is that you get complimentary transfers to and from the Cancún Airport.

The transportation is provided by a large charter bus and takes about 1 hour from the airport to the resort.

This is an incredible value as Cancun airport transfers usually cost around $150 USD if booked on your own. And this is one less thing you have to worry about!

The Hotel Xcaret airport transportation bus

✅ Great Location

Hotel Xcaret Mexico is located in the heart of Riviera Maya, just 15 minutes south of Playa del Carmen , and just over an hour south of Cancun Airport.

The hotel is situated directly on the Caribbean Sea next to Hotel Xcaret Arte and La Casa de la Playa . As part of the Xcaret destination, it’s also on the same property as Xcaret Park, Xplor, and Xenses.

Free round-trip transportation is provided from the airport as well as the Xcaret theme parks, which makes getting around quick and convenient. And if you want to go to any other nearby destinations, taxis can be easily arranged.

Overall, the location of Hotel Xcaret Mexico is convenient and perfect for exploring Riviera Maya.

It’s close enough to Playa del Carmen if you want to go shopping on 5th Avenue , but still gives you the peace and tranquility of a private beachfront property if you don’t care to leave the resort.

✅ Luxury Accommodations

One of the best things about Hotel Xcaret Mexico is the luxurious accommodations, which provide everything you need for a comfortable stay.

The hotel was built in 2017, so the decor is still very modern and chic yet still maintains an authentic Mexican feel.

Plus, all rooms comes equipped with balconies or terraces, traditional Mexican hammocks, comfortable beds with premium bedding and Egyptian cotton sheets, Nespresso coffee machines, jacuzzi tubs, and more.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico Room Categories

Hotel Xcaret Mexico offers a variety of room types, classified into these suite categories:

  • Garden Suites: Suites with garden and jungle views
  • River Suites: Suites with a view of the emerald river that frames the hotel
  • Ocean View Suites: Suites with a partial view of the Caribbean Sea
  • Ocean Front Suites: Suites with a full view of the Caribbean Sea
  • Junior Suites: 1-Bedroom suites with a separate living and dining room area
  • Master Suites: Larger 3-bedroom suites with a separate living and dining area
  • Presidential Suites: Ultra-luxury 2-bedroom suites with living and dining areas and multiple terraces with pools and jacuzzis

Within each suite category, you can choose between Standard Suites or upgraded Spa Suites, Adults Suites, Family Suites, and Swim Up Suites with direct access to the pool.

Most of the standard suites have a king sized beds or two queen sized beds with a pull out sofa.

For families, I would recommend the Garden Swim Up Suites or the Junior Suites, Master Suites, or Presidential Suites to give you more space.

Travelista Tip: You can view interactive 360° views of each of the room types on the Hotel Xcaret Mexico website .

Hotel Xcaret Mexico Ocean Front Suite Review

I personally stayed in an Ocean Front Suite Adults Suite at Casa Fuego and it was absolutely stunning!

The room was spacious with modern Mexican decor, with a plush king bed, living area with a sofa and dining table, and a large balcony with a hammock and ocean views.

A guestroom at Hotel Xcaret Mexico with a king sized bed

The bathroom was also very spacious and modern, featuring a double vanity sink, large jacuzzi tub, and a separate rainfall shower.

The bathroom also comes with bath robes and slippers and the toilet room even has a disappearing window!

A guestroom bathroom with a sink and tub at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

The suites also have flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and a complimentary mini bar stocked with drinks and snacks that is refilled daily.

The only thing I didn’t like about the suite is that there is no mirror over the sink in the bathroom. There’s a sliding mirror behind the sink, which is fine but it just makes getting ready a bit more challenging.

Plus, for families, having the bathroom right on top of the bed may not provide much privacy. But overall, the Ocean Front Suite was perfect for my stay and I would highly recommend it!

Me wearing a robe in my guestroom at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

Travelista Tip: If you’re not traveling with kids then I would highly recommend staying in the adults-only Casa Fuego. You’ll get access to an exclusive rooftop pool, another pool on the ground floor, as well as the Fuego restaurant. Plus, you get a butler assigned to your room!

✅ All-Inclusive Gourmet Dining

Hotel Xcaret Mexico offers 11 different dining experiences, where guests can enjoy all-inclusive dining and elevated gastronomy.

I was blown away by the food quality during my stay! The restaurants offer a variety of cuisines, from traditional Mexican to Asian fusion to Italian.

The food at Hotel Xcaret Mexico is way better than your average all-inclusive resort. And the great thing is that they really cater to both kids and adults so there’s lots of food options for everyone.

Plus, you can choose from buffet dining, sit down a la carte restaurants, or poolside snacks depending on your preference.

They’re also very accommodating to allergies and dietary restrictions. I have a nut allergy and every restaurant knew about my allergies and were able to make accommodations for me.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico Restaurants

Here’s an overview of the Hotel Xcaret all inclusive restaurants:

  • Bio : This restaurant is set in a cave-like setting and serves 100% vegan cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

  • Cantina Los Faroles : A lively cantina serving tequila and cocktails alongside traditional Mexican food from the Oaxaca region

  • Fuego : Exclusively for Casa Fuego guests, this oceanfront restaurants serves Italian cuisine with a touch of Mexico. Don’t miss the French Toast for breakfast–it’s basically a work of art and one of their most popular dishes!

  • Xin Gao:  An Asian restaurants featuring four different Japanase flavors and culinary techniques such as Teppanyaki, Robatayaki, Fusion, and Omakase

Hotel Xcaret Mexico Bars

I was also really impressed with the drink options at Hotel Xcaret Mexico. It’s definitely not hard to get a drink as there are bars at all of the restaurants and scattered throughout the resort.

You can order top shelf liquor (which is included) or stick to the basics. They also offer fun cocktails like margaritas and mojitos, as well as non-alcoholic options.

If you feel like having a mimosa at breakfast or a glass of wine with dinner, they have a great selection to choose from.

And the drinks weren’t watered down like at some all-inclusives I’ve been to, so that was a big plus!

Me holding a pina colada in front of the pool at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

✅ Incredible Pools + Swim Up Bars

One of the best things about Hotel Xcaret México is that no matter where you are on the property, you’re never far from a pool or swim up bar.

There are 20 pools throughout the resort, including adults-only and family-friendly options. And most of them have swim-up bars so you can enjoy a drink while taking a dip!

The main infinity pool next to the Trajinera restaurant is probably the most popular, with its beautiful ocean views and swim up bar.

The main infinity pool and swim up bar at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

There’s also the Pulpo (Octopus) Kids Pool, which is perfect for families with its shallow depth and water slides.

But my personal favorite pool was at Casa Fuego, which is adults only and exclusive to Casa Fuego guests. It’s a rooftop infinity pool with stunning views of the ocean.

Plus, this is where you’ll find the glass tunnel pool that you’ve probably seen on Instagram!

Me swimming through the glass tunnel pool at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

✅ Exceptional Service

In addition to the luxurious accommodations and all-inclusive dining, Hotel Xcaret Mexico also offers exceptional service.

The staff is always friendly, attentive, and willing to go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable.

It really did feel like 5-star service, and I found the front desk, restaurant, and pool staff to be extremely attentive. They always remembered my name and food allergies no matter where I was dining.

And it was never hard to get food and drinks by the pool with ample servers and pool concierge available to setup your lounge chairs, take orders, and hand out cold towels.

And if you’re staying at Casa Fuego, you’ll also be assigned a butler (“mayordomo” in Spanish) who is available to assist with anything you may need during your stay.

You can chat with them on WhatsApp and they can help with things like dinner reservations, park reservations, or packing assistance.

The butlers assigned to my room were super friendly and responsive and continuously checked in on me throughout my stay.

I asked about a towel for Xplor Fuego and within minutes my butler had returned to my room with a pool towel on a tray just for me!

✅ Lagoons and Beaches

One of the unique features of Hotel Xcaret Mexico is that it has beautiful emerald lagoons, rivers, and waterways flowing throughout the property.

These areas are perfect for kayaking and standup paddleboarding, which are both available for guests to enjoy.

And if relaxation is more your style, then you can take advantage of the man-made beaches and relaxation areas all throughout the lagoons.

They also have life jackets available for guests to use, which is great for kids or for those who may not be strong swimmers.

The emerald lagoons and waterways at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

✅ Family-Friendly Activities

Hotel Xcaret Mexico offers a variety of activities and entertainment options for families.

Not only is it one of the best Playa del Carmen family resorts with a water park but there fun family-friendly activities like:

  • The Pulpo (Octopus) Kid’s Pool with waterslides and splash areas
  • Kayaking and paddleboarding in the lagoons
  • A kid’s club with supervised activities for young children
  • A teen’s club for older kids with ping pong tables, pool tables, air hockey, fuse ball, and other games
  • Tennis Courts and Paddle Courts
  • Trajinera boats to Xcaret Park

Plus, as a family-friendly resort, they really cater to kids and you can find little touches like kid-sized dining tables at the restaurants and kid-sized lounge chairs around the pool.

And of course, the main activities for families to enjoy are the Xcaret parks that are included in your stay.

The Pulpo Octopus-shaped kid's pool at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

✅ Oceanfront Spa Cabins

If you’re looking to relax and unwind, the Muluk Spa at Hotel Xcaret Mexico is the perfect place to do so. They offer a variety of treatments from traditional Mayan rituals to modern spa services.

But what really sets their spa apart is their oceanfront cabins. These cabins are set above the lagoons and look out over the ocean so you can enjoy your treatment while listening to the sound of crashing waves.

There’s also a hydrotherapy circuit with hot and cold pools, steam rooms, saunas, and relaxation areas that you can use for an additional cost.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico: Cons

These are the main cons about Hotel Xcaret Mexico that you should keep in mind:

❌ Expensive

Hotel Xcaret Mexico is on the higher end of the price scale for Riviera Maya resorts and may not be suitable for all budgets.

However, it is definitely a luxury 5-star resort and with Hotel Xcaret Mexico packages , you will get what you pay for in terms of service, amenities, and experience.

Plus, with so many value adds like free Xcaret park tickets and round-trip airport transportation, I really do think it is worth the cost if you take advantage of everything that’s included.

A row of guestrooms next to trees at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

❌ Rocky Beach

One of the downsides of staying at Hotel Xcaret Mexico is that the beach area is rocky and is not always suitable for swimming.

It depends on the weather conditions, but when I was there it was a red flag day and the waves were pretty big with lots of rocks in the water.

You can still relax on lounge chairs in front of the beach, but it is definitely not the most ideal swimming area.

So if you’re a beach person and dreaming of widespread white-sand beaches, this might not be the best option for you.

However, to make up for this, they have created a widespread network of man-made lagoons and sandy beach areas where you can swim and relax.

These beach areas are actually better for small children because they are shallow and protected from the sea currents.

Plus, there are plenty of pools onsite, including the main pool with a swim-up bar and several other pools around the resort.

The beach at Hotel Xcaret Mexico with large rocks

❌ Large Property

Hotel Xcaret Mexico is situated on a massive property with over 900 guestrooms, which can make it a bit overwhelming to navigate. I’m not gonna lie–I got lost a few times!

There are also lots of winding pathways, steps, and some suspension bridges throughout the resort, so you will definitely do some walking to get from one area to another.

If you have mobility issues, this may not be an ideal place for you. There are still elevators and handicap ramps available, but you might want to consider staying in one of the Casas that is closer to the pools and restaurants.

Additionally, even though it’s a large resort it never felt overly crowded because there are so many different pool areas, hidden coves, and activities to explore.

Guestrooms next to a pool at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

❌ Basic Room Service Menu

As great as the food is at Hotel Xcaret Mexico , I was a little disappointed in the room service menu options.

It’s pretty basic and limited compared to the variety of restaurants they have onsite.

I tried to order late night dessert and had trouble finding something that was nut free. I settled on vanilla ice cream and what I got was a tiny little container of melted ice cream.

So I would recommend sticking to the restaurants for meals, but room service is still available 24 hours a day if you don’t feel like leaving your room.

❌ Limited Nightlife

Hotel Xcaret Mexico is definitely more of a family-friendly resort, so if you’re looking for a lively party atmosphere and lots of nightlife options, this may not be the best choice.

They do have some nightly entertainment like live music, mariachi performances, and shows at the Teatro del Rio, but it’s not as extensive as some other hotels in Playa del Carmen .

I got back to the resort pretty late after going to Xplor Fuego and it was pretty quiet with not much going on. I think Cantina Los Faroles is pretty much the only bar that’s open late.

But if you’re looking for nighttime entertainment, you can also consider going to the nighttime parks like Xplor Fuego or the Xcaret Mexico Espectacular at Xcaret Park.

Final Thoughts: Hotel Xcaret Mexico Review

I hope these Hotel Xcaret Mexico reviews have given you a good idea of what to expect during your stay at this unique eco-resort!

I honestly had a fantastic experience and would highly recommend it for families looking for a fun and adventurous vacation in the Riviera Maya.

Yes, it is expensive but I think the resort is a tremendous value for families because of the included Xcaret parks and tours, free airport transportation, as well as the exceptional service, gourmet dining, and on-site amenities.

If you think about how much money you’d spend at the parks and tours, plus the cost of transportation to get there, it really adds up and makes Hotel Xcaret Mexico an even better deal.

The only real con for me was the rocky beach, but they do have beautiful lagoons and sandy beach areas to make up for it, which are safer for small kids anyway.

Now for adults, I would suggest staying at the adults-only Hotel Xcaret Arte next door, or you can book a room at Casa Fuego, which is the adults-only Casa at Hotel Xcaret Mexico.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Hotel Xcaret Mexico and highly recommend it for families!

I was blown away by the impeccable service, delicious food, and fun activities and honestly didn’t want to leave!

So, what do you think, are you ready to book your stay at Hotel Xcaret Mexico?!
