What is the Soul’s Journey: Understanding the stages

August 29, 2024

Lauren Williams

Souls & Spirits

A solitary traveller walking on a winding path through diverse landscapes.

How does our soul’s journey influence who we become?

Every experience, every choice, shapes our journey.

I find it empowering to think of myself as the creator of my soul’s path. Not just destiny, but making choices that define me.

I want to better understand my past and how it influences who I am now.

This journey is a deep dive into who we are, uncovering layers of our purpose and true self.

It’s a journey of discovery, growth, and potential transformation.

What’s the next chapter in your soul’s journey?

What is Your Soul’s Journey?

A man walks on the sand at the beach.

What’s the bigger picture behind our existence?

Your soul’s journey is like a grand adventure, stretching beyond just one life.

It’s about the many experiences your soul has, both here and in the spirit world .

Think of it as a long road trip.

Each stop is a lifetime, but the journey keeps going.

This journey isn’t just about our time on Earth.

It’s about how our soul grows over time.

It’s not just about the experiences we have on Earth, but the continuous growth of our soul over time.

At its core, the soul’s journey is about the accumulation and understanding of experiences.

Every action you take, every word you speak, and every emotion you feel contributes to this journey. It’s a path of learning, experiencing, and evolving.

The real essence of the soul’s journey isn’t just about what defines it; it’s about how you choose to define and shape it with your actions and decisions.

This journey is also an overarching narrative that intertwines our physical incarnations with our existence within the spirit world.

It’s a continuous flow, a path that your soul takes from its inception to its evolution into a fully empowered creator being.

Unlike a predetermined route, each soul’s journey is unique, marked by individual choices, lessons, and experiences.

This journey is your personal story of spiritual evolution and self-discovery.

Understanding the Purpose of the Soul’s Journey

When I think about what the soul’s journey means, it feels like it’s about finding our true purpose and learning from life’s experiences.

It’s like each of us is on a personal mission to understand who we are and why we’re here.

This journey isn’t just about the big milestones in life; it’s also in the small, everyday moments where we learn, grow, and change.

Every decision I make, every challenge I face, feels like a part of this journey.

It’s as if with each step, I’m getting closer to understanding my true self.

Sometimes, it’s hard to see the bigger picture, but I believe each experience, good or bad, teaches me something valuable.

This idea makes me look at life differently.

I start to see each obstacle as a learning opportunity and each success as a step towards a greater understanding of myself.

It’s a journey that’s unique for everyone.

Our paths might be different, but we’re all trying to find our way, learn from our experiences, and grow as individuals.

Thinking about the soul’s journey this way makes it more than a spiritual concept; it becomes a practical approach to life.

It’s about making choices that lead to personal growth and understanding, constantly evolving and adapting as we walk our unique paths.

Spiritual Journey vs. Soul’s Journey

A man walks to a lake that is split with an outline of water.

As we explore and understand our existence, it becomes clear that the spiritual journey and the soul’s journey, though distinct, are deeply interrelated.

Each journey offers unique insights and experiences, yet they converge at a point of deep self-awareness.

This interconnection is where we find the I AM Presence , the unchanging core of our being that links our spiritual exploration with the evolution of our soul.

Recognizing this interplay enhances our understanding of both journeys, allowing us to navigate our path more clearly and purposefully.

The Spiritual Journey

The spiritual journey is a personal and conscious quest for deeper understanding and connection with the spiritual aspects of life.

It’s a path marked by exploration and discovery, where one seeks to understand the nature of the divine, the universe, and their place within it.

This journey is unique for each individual, shaped by their beliefs, experiences, and the spiritual practices they adopt.

  • Exploration and Awakening : On this journey, individuals may explore various religious beliefs, engage in spiritual practices like meditation or yoga, and seek experiences that offer enlightenment and deeper understanding. It’s a process of continual learning and awakening, where each step brings greater insight into one’s spiritual nature.
  • Connection and Growth : The spiritual journey is also about developing a deeper connection with the self, others, and the universe. It involves recognizing and nurturing the spiritual essence within, which some might relate to the I AM Presence . This journey encourages personal growth, compassion, and a sense of interconnectedness with all things.

The Soul’s Journey

The soul’s journey, while intersecting with the spiritual journey, encompasses a broader scope of our existence.

It is the path our soul takes through various lifetimes, gathering experiences, learning lessons, and evolving.

  • Continuity Across Lifetimes : This journey considers the soul’s continuity beyond our current life. It is about the evolution and learning that the soul undergoes across different incarnations, with each lifetime contributing to the soul’s growth and understanding.
  • Learning and Purpose : The soul’s journey is deeply connected to the lessons we learn and the experiences we accumulate. It’s about understanding the deeper purpose of our soul and the journey it takes to achieve its ultimate goals. This path is less about conscious seeking and more about the soul’s innate drive to evolve, learn, and fulfill its purpose.

While both journeys are integral to our growth and self-realization, the spiritual journey is about our conscious search for spiritual meaning in this lifetime, and the soul’s journey encompasses the soul’s continuous evolution across various lifetimes.

Understanding their distinct yet interconnected nature helps us appreciate the depth and breadth of our journey towards self-awareness and fulfillment.

The Soul as a Lifelong Student

The concept of the soul’s journey portrays our soul as a lifelong student, enrolled in the ever-evolving curriculum of life. This perspective views every experience, whether joyous or challenging, as a learning opportunity for the soul.

  • Learning Through Life’s Experiences : Our lives are filled with a variety of experiences, each holding multiple possibilities for growth and understanding. The soul, as a student, absorbs lessons from every interaction, relationship, and situation. These lessons contribute to the soul’s evolution, helping it to grow wiser and more mature with each lifetime.
  • The Soul’s Curriculum : The curriculum for the soul encompasses all aspects of human experience. From the trials we endure to the moments of happiness we cherish, every aspect of life teaches the soul something valuable. This process of learning is continuous and does not end with physical death, as the soul carries its wisdom into future incarnations.

The Process of Inner Exploration

The soul’s journey is deeply introspective, involving a process of inner exploration to understand the depths of our being. This exploration is essential for the soul to become ‘all knowing’ about its nature and purpose.

  • Connecting with the Soul : This journey requires us to connect deeply with our inner selves, listening to the subtle whispers of our soul. It’s about going beyond the surface of our conscious mind to explore the deeper aspects of who we are. This exploration often leads to surprising discoveries about our strengths, desires, and life’s purpose.
  • Inner Answers and Guidance : The process of inner exploration allows us to find answers to our deepest questions and guidance for our life’s path. The insights we gain from this journey are unique to us, as they are based on our soul’s individual experiences and lessons. This inner guidance is invaluable, helping us to navigate life with greater clarity and understanding.

In exploring our soul as a lifelong student and delving into the process of inner exploration, we come to realize the depth and richness of the soul’s journey.

It’s a path that not only encompasses learning from life’s experiences but also involves a deep dive into the essence of our being, uncovering the wisdom and knowledge that lie within.

Stages Of Your Soul’s Journey

3 people on the beach with soul spirits ascending behind them.

1. Awakening

The first stage of the soul’s journey is often marked by an awakening. This is a moment or period where there is a significant shift in awareness, leading to a deeper questioning of life’s purpose and one’s true self. It’s a stage of realization where the soul starts to see beyond the mundane aspects of daily life and seeks a deeper meaning.

2. Exploration

Following the awakening, the soul enters a phase of exploration. This stage is characterized by seeking knowledge, understanding different spiritual paths, and experimenting with various practices. It’s a time of curiosity and openness, where the soul is eager to learn and experience new things.

3. Challenge

The challenge stage involves facing and overcoming obstacles that are essential for the soul’s growth. These challenges can be internal, like confronting personal fears or limiting beliefs, or external, such as navigating difficult life circumstances. This stage strengthens and refines the soul, preparing it for further evolution.

4. Enlightenment

Enlightenment is a pivotal stage where the soul gains significant insight or understanding. This doesn’t necessarily mean reaching a final state of total enlightenment, but rather experiencing moments of clarity and profound realization that fundamentally change the soul’s perspective and approach to life.

5. Integration

After enlightenment, the soul enters the integration stage. Here, the insights and lessons learned are assimilated into everyday life. This stage is about living the wisdom gained, applying new understanding to daily actions, relationships, and decisions. It’s a process of aligning one’s life with the soul’s true purpose.

6. Contribution

In the contribution stage, the focus shifts from personal growth to serving others. The soul, having gained wisdom and understanding, now looks to share this with the world. This can manifest in various forms, such as teaching, healing, or engaging in acts of compassion and service.

7. Completion

The final stage is completion, where the soul reaches a sense of fulfillment in its journey. This doesn’t imply the end of growth but signifies a phase where the soul has achieved its major objectives for a particular lifetime. It’s a time of reflection, gratitude, and understanding the interconnectedness of all life.

Each stage of the soul’s journey offers unique lessons and opportunities for growth. Understanding these stages helps us to navigate our own journey with greater awareness and purpose.

Reflecting On Your Journey

A man looks out to mountains that look infinite.

It’s important to remember one fundamental truth: we are in control of our journey. This realization empowers us to embrace each stage with intention and purpose.

Our journey is ours to shape. Every decision we make, every challenge we face, is an opportunity for growth and learning. It’s a reminder that we are the architects of our soul’s evolution.

Reflecting on this journey, I’m struck by our profound responsibility. It’s not just about moving through life passively; it’s about actively engaging with our soul’s growth.

We own our journey. This ownership isn’t about control in a rigid sense, but about embracing our power to influence our path. It’s about making choices that resonate with our deepest selves.

In this journey, every moment is significant. From the major crossroads to the seemingly small decisions, each step shapes our soul’s narrative.

Looking ahead, the journey continues. It’s an ongoing process of discovery, growth, and transformation. With this understanding, we can approach each new day as an opportunity to further our soul’s evolution.

Remember, your soul’s journey is a reflection of your innermost self. How you navigate it is your greatest expression of personal power and purpose.

The Unexpected Ways Our Lifes Journey Defines Who We Are

  • July 7, 2022

Who we are is often shaped by our lifes journey and experiences, both good and bad.

Our lifes journey can take many different paths, and each one helps to define us a little more. We learn and grow from every experience, and each new adventure helps us to become more of who we truly are.

But what exactly is this thing called identity? And how does it change over time?

These are questions that psychologists and philosophers have been pondering for centuries, and there are still no easy answers. But that doesn’t mean we can’t explore and try to understand the topic better. So let’s take a journey (pun intended) into the complex world of an identity!

lifes journey

What is identity?

The dictionary definition of identity is “The identity of a person or place is the characteristics they have that distinguish them from others.”

But of course, there’s much more to it than that. Our identity comprises all the different aspects of ourselves that we present to the world. It’s how we see ourselves and how others see us.

We can say it is our personal brand , the image we project to the world. But it’s also so much more than that.

about our journey

How does our lifes journey shape our identities?

It is often said that we are a product of our lifes journey and the experiences we have along the way. Indeed, every experience and decision contributes to our identity’s complex tapestry. That is why each person is unique and complex in their own way.

As we journey through life, we constantly encounter new people and experiences that shape our identity.

It’s fascinating to see how many factors shape our identities.

Our upbringing, relationships, the love (or lack thereof) we receive from others, the friends and teachers who influence us, past experiences and events, and even the media we consume can all impact our thoughts and actions.

As a result, our beliefs and values are constantly evolving. That is why our identity is not static; it is ever-changing and dynamic.

Just as no two people are exactly alike, no two journeys are exactly alike either.

Life is an ongoing journey of discovery , and our identity is the map that charts the course.

5 steps to understand better why you are who you are.

Why am I the way I am?

That is a question we all ask ourselves at some point in our lives. And it’s not an easy question to answer. The truth is that we are all products of our upbringing, encounters, experiences, and our environment.

One of the fascinating things about humans is our minds and how complex they are. As a result, we can never fully understand it, but we can start by learning more about ourselves through self-discovery .

As we mentioned, our life experiences shape our thinking, feelings, and behavior. However, if you’re curious about your motivations and behaviors, there are some steps you can take to start understanding yourself better:

#1. Reflect on your lifes journey: Make sense of your past

You can start by looking at your past experiences. Your past, both good and bad, has helped to shape who you are today. So, by reflecting on your lifes journey, you can start to understand why you think and act the way you do.

First, think about your childhood and early social interactions. Often, our early life experiences leave us bent out of shape, influencing our behavior in ways we are unaware of. So, to begin understanding, it is essential to ask yourself some tough questions about your past:

  • What kind of environment did you grow up in?
  • How did your parents/guardians treat you?
  • What were some of the most painful experiences you have had?
  • What did you learn from them?
  • How have they influenced your behavior?

These factors can play a significant role in shaping who you are as an adult.

Once you better understand your past, you can begin to work on making peace with it. That will help you move forward in your life and make positive changes in the present.

One can do this in many ways, and you don’t have to stick with just one method!  Journaling is one way to begin diving into your past.

One study showed a “statistically significant relationship between life story coherence and psychological well-being.” That means you can improve your mental health when you make sense of your past. So, if you have things in your past that you’re struggling to make sense of, take some time to reflect and process them.

It can be difficult and emotional to face your past, so give yourself plenty of time and space to do so.

#2. Challenge your beliefs

Another factor that shapes us into the person we are is our beliefs. Whether it’s political, religious, scientific, or personal, challenging your beliefs can be a gratifying process.

  • Are there things you believe about yourself and the world around you that you’ve never questioned?
  • Why do you believe them?
  • Are they based on facts or feelings?

We all have certain assumptions and beliefs about people, situations, and the world around us. These assumptions and beliefs are often based on our past experiences or what others have told us . But, more often than not, when we question our beliefs, we discover that they are not as accurate as we thought.

It can be difficult and even uncomfortable when you first begin challenging a belief you have held for years.

You might feel like your whole worldview is being shaken or that you’re somehow betraying your beliefs. But by pushing yourself to examine why you believe what you do and how those beliefs came to be, you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself and what’s important to you.

To really challenge your beliefs, it’s essential to approach the process with an open mind . Be willing to consider that you might be wrong, and be prepared to revise your beliefs if new evidence arises.

It can also be helpful to talk to people with different beliefs than you to understand their perspectives better.

Ultimately, the goal of challenging your beliefs is not to necessarily change them but to learn more about the reasons why you hold them. Doing so can give you a deeper understanding of yourself and what’s important to you.#

#3. Challenge your self-limiting beliefs

In addition to challenging your beliefs, it’s also essential to challenge your self-limiting beliefs. We all have self-limiting beliefs.

Often, self-limiting beliefs are based on our past experiences or what others have told us.

  • I’m not good enough.
  • I’ll never be successful.
  • Other people are always out to get me.

These self-limiting beliefs can often be harmful and can hold us back in life.

If you believe you’re not good enough, you might not even try to achieve your goals. Or, if you think that other people are always out to get you, you might not bother trying to build relationships with others.

That is why it’s important to question these self-limiting beliefs and to see them for what they really are: just thoughts in your head.

Just because you’ve always been told that you’re not good enough doesn’t mean it’s true. And just because you’ve had some bad experiences doesn’t mean that all people are out to get you.

By challenging your self-limiting beliefs, you can start to see things more clearly and make better decisions in your life.

If you’ve been all your life stuck because of your self-limiting beliefs, now it’s time to do something about it.

Start seeing what’s possible for your life! By using the power of future self visualization , you can envision your ideal future and your higher self and begin to take steps toward making it a reality.

#4. Look for patterns in your behavior.

Next, consider your current situation.

Are there any patterns in your life that seem to contribute to negative behaviors or emotions?

One place to start looking for clues is in your behavior . After all, we’re all creatures of habit, and our behavior patterns can say a lot about us.

So, take a close look at the things you do daily.

  • Are you always running late?
  • Do you have a hard time saying no?
  • Do you tend to procrastinate?
  • Why do you keep being drawn to unavailable people?

Really understand where these patterns came from and what they mean for you. What are these patterns trying to tell you about yourself?

It could mean that, in the past, you’ve had trouble setting boundaries because you didn’t want to hurt people’s feelings. It could also signify that you tend to put others before yourself.

Maybe you’re attracted to unavailable people because you grew up feeling like you were never good enough. Because your parents or siblings always made you feel like you were never good enough. As a result, you might have developed a pattern of chasing after emotionally unavailable people.

Or maybe your friends in high school always made fun of you, so you created a habit of self-sabotage.

These are just some examples, but the point is that you can learn a lot about yourself by understanding the patterns in your behavior. You can also begin to see how these patterns might negatively impact your life.

Understanding the origins of our patterns can help change them. And it will be easier to change if you know why you’re behaving a certain way.

#5. Understand your triggers.

A critical part of understanding your identity is understanding your triggers.

  • What are the things that set you off?
  • What makes you react in specific ways?

For example, maybe you get angry when someone criticizes you. Why do you feel that way? Perhaps it’s because when you were young, your parents were always critical of you, making you feel bad about yourself.

Or maybe you feel shy and uncomfortable when you’re around new people. Perhaps it’s because you had a bad experience in the past, like being made fun of by other kids at school.

These are your triggers, and it’s essential to be aware of them. Once you know what sets you off, you can start to work on managing your reactions and triggers more constructively.

Take some time to think about who you are and why you are the way you are. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it. The better you understand yourself, the more you can grow and change in the ways you want to.

Accept and embrace your lifes journey.

Life is a journey and we all have a unique story that makes us who we are. Some of us are born into privilege, while others have to fight for everything we have. Some of us are naturally gifted, while others have to work harder than anyone else to get by. But each of us has something special that makes us who we are.

The important thing is to accept our story and use it as a source of strength rather than weakness.

So embrace the journey, whatever it may be. Embrace the ups and downs, the twists and turns. Embrace the good times and the bad because it’s all part of what makes us special and unique.

However, if you feel stuck, seek out help . A therapist can provide guidance and support as you work to develop a greater understanding of yourself. You can also try to work through it on your own with the help and support of your loved ones. Whichever route you choose, ensure that you take care of yourself during this process.

about our journey

Final thoughts – Lifes journey

Our life is a continuous journey. It is a never-ending process of personal growth , learning, and self-discovery .

Looking back at my life, I can now see and truly understand that everything happens for a reason.

If it weren’t for all the hardships I’ve faced, every job I’ve had, and every person I’ve met, I wouldn’t be the strong, independent person I am today. Thus, I’m grateful for all my challenges because they’ve made me who I am. Without them, I would be a completely different person.

The truth is that we all want to be someone better than who we are today. But in order to do that, we need to first understand ourselves . Only then can we begin making the necessary changes to become the person we want to be . It’s not going to be easy, but it’s definitely worth it.

The key is to accept and enjoy your lifes journey, no matter how challenging it may be. Remember, you have the power to change who you are. And that is definitely something worth celebrating.

Every day, we are faced with new challenges and opportunities. It’s up to us what we do with them. So don’t give up on yourself. Take the first step today.

Short Poems & Quotes

11 life journey poems.

  • The Journey Poet Unknown You got to have some trouble in this rough old world of ours, You got to fight the bumblebee, sometimes to pick the flowers; Your going find fin' a heap of roughness in the rocky road, Before you get what you can rest and lay aside the load. But be humble, and don't grumble, Because you sometimes slip and stumble, And seems to drop behind the rest of all the hustlin' throng. Don't stop an' start a-whining And a-whimpering and a pinning, But pick your feet up, honey, and go traveling along. You may have fears of troubles that will hit you hard someday, But they're bound to catch you if you halt along the way. You got to keep a moving. Some are fast and some are slow. But all that's looked for from you is to do the best you know. So don't you wait and worry, If you fall down in your hurry, And never mind the chaffing And the hollering and the laughing, Just pull yourself together as you hum a little song, But pick your feet up, honey, and go travelling along.

attitude poems

  • A Journey Poet: Dr. M. Coleman Harris Life is like a journey Taken on a train With a pair of travellers At each windowpane. I may sit beside you All the journey through, Or I may sit elsewhere Never knowing you. But if fate should make me To sit by your side, Let’s be pleasant travelers; It’s so short a ride.
  • A Purpose Poet: Catherine Pulsifer Looking around the world, big and small, Every one of us is on a journey to help all. A purpose to fulfill, a role to play in society. An opportunity to excel, not for anxiety! We have special gifts, each one of us; Our life is truly a precious trust! On life's journey find love and grace; Life is meant to be lived, it is not a race.

poems about purpose

  • Life's Journey Poet: Ella Wheeler Wilcox As we speed out of youth's sunny station The track seems to shine in the light, But it suddenly shoots over chasms Or sinks into tunnels of night. And the hearts that were brave in the morning Are filled with repining and fears, As they pause at the City of Sorrow Or pass through the Valley of Tears. But the road of this perilous journey The hand of the Master has made; With all its discomforts and dangers, We need not be sad or afraid. Paths leading from light into darkness, Ways plunging from gloom to despair, Wind out through the tunnels of midnight To fields that are blooming and fair. Though the rocks and the shadows surround us, Though we catch not one gleam of the day, Above us fair cities are laughing, And dipping white feet in some bay. And always, eternal, for ever, Down over the hills in the west, The last final end of our journey, There lies the great Station of Rest. 'Tis the Grand Central point of all railways, All roads unite here when they end; 'Tis the final resort of all tourists, All rival lines meet here and blend. All tickets, all seasons, all passes, If stolen or begged for or bought, On whatever road or division, Will bring you at last to this spot. If you pause at the City of Trouble, Or wait in the Valley of Tears, Be patient, the train will move onward, And rush down the track of the years. Whatever the place is you seek for, Whatever your game or your quest, You shall come at the last with rejoicing To the beautiful City of Rest. You shall store all your baggage of worries, You shall feel perfect peace in this realm, You shall sail with old friends on fair waters, With joy and delight at the helm. You shall wander in cool, fragrant gardens With those who have loved you the best, And the hopes that were lost in life's journey You shall find in the City of Rest.

train of life

  • Silver And Gold Poet: Unknown Get of this life I shall never take Things of silver and gold I make. All that I cherish and hoard away, After I leave, on earth must stay. All that I gather and all that I keep, I must leave behind when I fall asleep. And I often wonder what I shall own In the other life when I pass along. What shall they find and what shall they see In the soul that answers the call for me? Shall the Great Judge learn, when my task is through, That my spirit has gathered some riches, too? Or shall at the last it be mine to find That all I'd worked for I'd left behind?
  • Roses and Sunshine Poet: Edgar A. Guest Rough is the road I am journeying now, Heavy the burden I'm bearing to-day; But I'm humming a song, as I wander along, And I smile at the roses that nod by the way. Red roses sweet, Blooming there at my feet, Just dripping with honey and perfume and cheer; What a weakling I'd be If I tried not to see The joy and the comfort you bring to us here. Just tramping along o'er the highway of life, Knowing not what's ahead but still doing my best; And I sing as I go, for my soul seems to know In the end I shall come to the valley of rest. With the sun in my face And the roses to grace The roads that I travel, what have I to fear? What a coward I'd be If I tried not to see The roses of hope and the sunshine of cheer.

poems about hope

  • Our Journey Poet: Catherine Pulsifer, © 2020 Our journey through life has its ups and downs Sometimes feelings of being sad and others of a clown We all have highs and the lows Many happy times and times of sorrow. But there is one factor that makes a difference It is the attitude of your preference. Do you look for the good or do you see the bad Your attitude determines whether you're happy or sad. Our journey can be negative or it can be positive Is just depends on our life perspective. No matter what happens, no matter the time Find the good and upward you will climb. Life is too short to sit and moan Seize the good and it can change your life tone Our journey through life can be a happy one A positive attitude can bring more fun!

positive poems

  • Life And Moods Poet: Patience Strong Moods will lead you such a dance - If you just give them half a chance. They'll lift you up and fling you down. They'll turn a smile into a frown. They'll drive you into black despairs. They'll creep upon you unaware... Your friends will drop you one by one - no wonder, for there's not much fun - in people who are bright and gay - and dull, and bored with life, next day... So don't be swayed by each new mood... Just throw them off, or they'll intrude - and spoil some bright and happy hour... For you, yourself, give them power.

poems about being happy

  • It's The Journey That's Important... Poet: John McLeod Life, sometimes so wearying Is worth its weight in gold The experience of traveling Lends a wisdom that is old Beyond our 'living memory' A softly spoken prayer: "It's the journey that's important, Not the getting there!" Ins and outs and ups and downs Life's road meanders aimlessly? Or so it seems, but somehow Leads us where we need to be, And being simply human We oft question and compare... "Is the journey so important Or the getting there?" And thus it's always been That question pondered down the ages By simple men with simple ways To wise and ancient sages... How sweet then, quietly knowing Reaching destination fair: "It's the journey that's important, Not the getting there!"

it's the journey that's important, not the getting there!

  • These Would I Keep Poet: Lida Marie Erwin These would I keep: My faith in men, Though one may stumble now and then - A faith which helps me still to see What God intends a man to be. A cheery heart, in spite of fate; The strength to work, the patience to wait; A hand that lifts a brother up And shares with him the bitter cup. A spirit calm, despite the storm. Which sees through clouds, the stalwart form Of Him who stilled the maddened wave - Is ever near to help and save. The optimism childhood had; The simple trust that made me glad; The beauty of life in its crimson dawn - These would I keep as I journey on.

optimistic poems

  • The Light Of A Cheerful Heart Poet: Max Ehrmann I tell you that you and I and the commonest person are all journeying the same way, hemmed in by the same narrow path, leading to the eternal years. We pride ourselves over our particular superiority; but really there is little difference between us; And in this journey over the thousand hills and valleys called life, he is wisest who is patient where the way is hard, has faith when he does not understand, and carries into the dark places the light of a cheerful heart.

All of us have heard it — “Life is a journey” — so many times. It’s not a singular journey though. Every person has a different experience, a different destination and itineraries to tick off. However, it's a journey that we must learn to savour, cherish and treasure.

Everyone has a different meaning to their journey as well. Life’s journey is filled with roadblocks and achievements but we must savour every bit. Here are quotes to help you take on the many journeys that life has to offer.

The Path to Personal Growth

Growth is about overcoming our tendency to respond quickly or negatively..

Posted June 13, 2021 | Reviewed by Jessica Schrader

  • Steps to personal growth include learning how to respond better to situations and finding those we can learn from on our journey.
  • Reframing our mindset to be more solution-focused than reactive can ultimately help make our lives happier.
  • It is important to find a teacher whose teachings and philosophy resonate with you, and to apply their principles to your own life.

Many people are focused on achieving fleeting things like wealth, success, or fame. While they may bring about temporary happiness , the feeling is often fleeting. I believe that out of all of the things we can work towards, pursuing personal growth is the best choice to achieve lifelong happiness and contentment. Today, we’ll learn why.

We don’t have much control over things in the external world. For example, we didn’t choose the place we were born, our family, or our natural talents. The one thing we do have control over is how we respond to the world, more specifically to adversity. Personal growth is about overcoming our natural tendency to respond quickly or negatively to situations. When we’re able to control our reactions, or our internal selves, a world of possibilities opens up.

In today’s post, I want to discuss the two ways we can achieve personal growth and how we can better respond to the world around us. This will help us find inner peace no matter what’s happening in our external world. This may sound hard for some of us, and it is. But when we change how we see the world and how we respond to the world, there is an unlimited amount of potential for achieving happiness and peace.

The first aspect of personal growth is learning how to respond better to situations that we have historically struggled with. Let’s use self-confidence as an example. When we’re having a particularly low day, we may look in the mirror and think, “I don’t like the way I look.” To combat these thoughts, we can develop skills to accept our appearance and even begin to like the way we look. This acceptance stems from the realization that there are some things that are out of our control. Once we internalize this fact, we can begin to accept what is, and eventually love what is.

The second key ingredient to personal growth is finding a teacher or teachers that we can learn from on our journey. The reason this is a key ingredient is that it’s helpful to have an expert in the subject who can help us understand these principles more deeply.

Let’s dive deeper into both of these concepts.

The first aspect of personal growth is focused on re-framing our struggles. What I mean by this is, the next time we face a problem, the best way to overcome it is to see it differently. For example, the next time we wake up anxious , are upset at a friend, or have an interaction that causes us to stress , we can choose to see these as opportunities to make our lives better.

Something I have repeated throughout my podcast is that there is a solution to every single problem we face. One of life’s purposes is to find these solutions. We have the power to adjust our typical responses to situations that bring on intense emotions, whether that is shame , anger , depression , etc. We now can begin to say, “I’m struggling with this. There must be something that I’m doing that is causing me to struggle, because there are other people who have also faced this problem and they’re doing well. This means there must be a solution.” Instead of criticizing ourselves, or hating our lives, we can reframe our mindset to be more solution-focused than reactive. This will guide us towards finding a way to solve our problems and ultimately make our lives happier.

Let me use an example to explore this point. Studies have shown that about 80% of people are unhappy at work. For the purpose of this example, let’s say we’re in that 80%. In order to change our circumstances, or find a solution, we must ask ourselves what can we do to make our situation better? We can perhaps leave our job, but that would have consequences since we’re responsible for supporting our family. Maybe we can look into other career paths, but seeking out more education may take a long time. Or we can say, maybe I can reduce my living expenses so I don’t need to keep up with the lifestyle I’ve created for myself. With these reduced expenses, I can now work a little less or find a job that will be more fulfilling. Happiness is about enjoying our day all day long, so we want to make sure that our job makes us feel happy and fulfilled.

There are so many ways to tackle this problem. One solution that many of my clients have reached over the years is to work less. A lot of people have flexibility in their work already that they may not be taking advantage of. For example, one of my clients gets three weeks of vacation a year but is tempted to skip out on the vacation because they get paid out on those days at the end of the year. In response, I asked them, is it worth not taking your vacation to have a little more money? When they examined the option more closely they decided that no, it wasn’t worth giving up the opportunity to recharge and decompress. My goal is to help folks reframe what life is about. I believe that it’s about enjoying the journey and for most people who work regularly, taking a vacation is necessary to maintain our happiness.

about our journey

Remember that this is just an example. Your story and your struggles may look completely different. The overarching point here is that we often have some control over situations that may seem out of our control. And when we take the opportunity to make some changes, we will find that happiness is within our reach. We can look at life’s challenges as an opportunity for personal growth, rather than an inconvenience or hassle. The best part is, when these challenges re-emerge later, we’ll know how to handle them.

The second aspect of personal growth is to find a teacher whose teachings and philosophy resonate with you. When you do find the right teacher, it’s important to apply their principles to your own life. This step may seem less important but it is just as important as step number one. Our parents or caretakers were the people who taught us how to respond to the world and if we want to change that, we need someone who is better aligned to our current belief system than the one we had when we were younger. We also don't necessarily have to access these teachings in person. We can listen to them on audiobooks, watch them on youtube, or read about their beliefs in a book. And if you reach a point where their teachings are no longer serving you, there are always other people out there who can guide you through your path to self-discovery

Working on ourselves is no easy task. It involves unlearning and practicing different responses to problems, over and over again. But we must remember that we are capable of real change, and these changes can help us live beautiful lives. When we look at problems in a different light and follow a teacher with whom we resonate, we’ll grow exponentially.

10 of the Best Poems about Journeys

By Dr Oliver Tearle (Loughborough University)

According to Thomas de Quincey, Wordsworth clocked up an estimated 180,000 miles during his lifetime, walking around his beloved Lake District (to say nothing of the Quantocks, where he lived near Coleridge during the 1790s).

Given that there is a strong link between poets and travelling of various kinds – whether walking, sailing, or travelling in some more abstract, metaphorical or spiritual sense – we felt it was time we put together some of the greatest journey poems.

Andrew Marvell, ‘ Bermudas ’.

Where the remote Bermudas ride In th’ocean’s bosom unespied, From a small boat, that row’d along, The list’ning winds receiv’d this song. ‘What should we do but sing his praise That led us through the wat’ry maze Unto an isle so long unknown, And yet far kinder than our own?

This poem, from the seventeenth-century poet Andrew Marvell, is set in the Atlantic ocean and focuses on a group of people aboard a boat, and clearly in exile from their native land. They spy the island of Bermuda, and sing a song in praise of the island. The next 32 lines of the poem comprise their song.

The people aboard the boat praise God for leading them to this previously undiscovered island, which seems ‘far kinder’ than the island they have left behind, namely Britain.

These people have endured and eluded sea-monsters and storms, and God has led them to safety on the ‘grassy stage’ of this new island. It is mentioned that they are fleeing England because of ‘prelates’ rage’, namely religious persecution – so ‘Bermudas’ is a poem about undertaking a difficult journey to find a new place where a community of people can start afresh.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner .

The Wedding-Guest sat on a stone: He cannot choose but hear; And thus spake on that ancient man, The bright-eyed Mariner.

‘The ship was cheered, the harbour cleared, Merrily did we drop Below the kirk, below the hill, Below the lighthouse top.

‘The Sun came up upon the left, Out of the sea came he! And he shone bright, and on the right Went down into the sea …

Written in 1797-8, this is Coleridge’s most famous poem – it first appeared in Lyrical Ballads . The idea of killing an albatross bringing bad luck upon the crew of a ship appears to have been invented in this poem, as there is no precedent for it – and the albatross idea was probably William Wordsworth’s, not Coleridge’s (Wordsworth got the idea of the albatross-killing from a 1726 book, A Voyage Round The World by Way of the Great South Sea , by Captain George Shelvocke).

The poem is one of the great narrative poems in English, with the old mariner recounting his story, with its hardships and tragedy, to a wedding guest. Variously interpreted as being about guilt over the Transatlantic slave trade, about Coleridge’s own loneliness, and about spiritual salvation, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner remains a challenging poem about a journey whose lessons the ship’s crew, and we as readers, continue to learn from.

Robert Browning, ‘ How They Brought the Good News from Ghent to Aix ’.

I sprang to the stirrup, and Joris, and he; I gallop’d, Dirck gallop’d, we gallop’d all three; ‘Good speed!’ cried the watch, as the gate-bolts undrew; ‘Speed!’ echoed the wall to us galloping through; Behind shut the postern, the lights sank to rest, And into the midnight we gallop’d abreast …

Beginning with the wonderfully rhythmical lines ‘I sprang to the stirrup, and Joris, and he; / I gallop’d, Dirck gallop’d, we gallop’d all three’. But this poem, describing a horse-ride to deliver some important news (although we never learn what the news actually is). Instead, the emphasis is on the journey itself, with the sound of the galloping horses excellently captured through the metre of the verse.

This poem has a notable claim to fame: in 1889, it became the first poem (spoken by the author) to be recorded on a phonograph, when Browning recited (half-remembered) words from the poem into an Edison phonograph at a dinner party.

Henry Cholmondeley Pennell, ‘ The Night Mail North ’.

Now then, take your seats! for Glasgow and the North; Chester! – Carlisle! – Holyhead, – and the wild Firth of Forth,

‘Clap on the steam and sharp’s the word, You men in scarlet cloth: –

‘Are there any more pas .. sengers, For the Night .. Mail .. to the North!’ Are there any more passengers? Yes three – but they can’t get in, – Too late, too late! – How they bellow and knock, They might as well try to soften a rock As the heart of that fellow in green …’

Before W. H. Auden’s more famous ‘Night Mail’ poem from 1936, there was this poem, whose full title is ‘The Night Mail North (Euston Square, 1840)’ – 1840 being the year the penny post was introduced in Britain. Pennell captures the snatches of conversation on the train as it prepares to embark on its long voyage north and the passengers settle down for their journey in this skilful piece of what we might call documentary poetry.

Emily Dickinson, ‘ Our Journey had advanced ’.

Our journey had advanced; Our feet were almost come To that odd fork in Being’s road, Eternity by term …

In many of the best journey poems, the journey is a metaphor for something greater – and this is certainly the case in this Emily Dickinson poem. And what journey is greater than that from life into death, mortality into eternity?

A. E. Housman, ‘ White in the moon the long road lies ’.

White in the moon the long road lies, The moon stands blank above; White in the moon the long road lies That leads me from my love.

Still hangs the hedge without a gust, Still, still the shadows stay: My feet upon the moonlit dust Pursue the ceaseless way …

In this poem, the king of lugubrious English verse writes about leaving his beloved, with the road lying ahead of him that ‘leads me from my love’. And although he trusts that the same road will eventually lead him back to his love, first he must travel far, far away.

W. B. Yeats, ‘ Sailing to Byzantium ’.

That is no country for old men. The young In one another’s arms, birds in the trees, —Those dying generations—at their song, The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas, Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long Whatever is begotten, born, and dies. Caught in that sensual music all neglect Monuments of unageing intellect …

W. B. Yeats wrote ‘Sailing to Byzantium’ in 1927, when he was in his early sixties, and the poem sees Yeats’s speaker announcing that the country he’s left behind is ‘no country for old men’.

Being old, the speaker felt out of place there, and so he is making a journey (a pilgrimage?) to the ancient city of Byzantium, which can be read as a symbol for his yearning for spiritual meaning: the poem, then, is about a spiritual journey, and renouncing the hold of the world upon us in order to attain something higher than the physical or sensual.

D. H. Lawrence, ‘ The Ship of Death ’.

Now it is autumn and the falling fruit and the long journey towards oblivion.

The apples falling like great drops of dew to bruise themselves an exit from themselves.

And it is time to go, to bid farewell to one’s own self, and find an exit from the fallen self …

A poem of angst and death, ‘The Ship of Death’ uses the metaphor of a journey to invoke the idea of self-discovery: the poem involves the poem’s speaker calling for the reader to prepare a ‘ship of death’ – ‘the fragile ship of courage, the ark of faith’ – to transport them to ‘oblivion’, travelling from ‘the old self’ to ‘the new’.

T. S. Eliot, ‘ Journey of the Magi ’.

A nativity poem with a difference, ‘Journey of the Magi’ (1927) is spoken by one of the ‘Three Wise Men’ (as they’re commonly known), as they make their journey to visit the infant Jesus. The speaker reflects on the hardships he and his fellow travellers endure on their journey, and the implications of the advent of Christ for the Magi’s own belief system.

Philip Larkin, ‘ The Whitsun Weddings ’.

This poem, the title poem in Larkin’s 1964 collection, describes a journey from Hull to London on the Whitsun weekend and the wedding parties that Larkin sees climbing aboard the train at each station. Actually inspired by a train journey from Hull down to Loughborough in the Midlands, ‘The Whitsun Weddings’ captures the hope and togetherness these wedding parties symbolise – although the poem can also be read in a less optimistic way .

You might have to take a few pit stops, you might get a flat tire here and there, you might go through a few thunderstorms , but though all your experiences, fruit is being built. You are becoming stronger, and your faith and reliance in Christ is growing.

God will take out bad habits and sin from our life. God has given us various things to help us on our journey such as prayer. We must spend time with the Lord daily . We are to have an intimate relationship with God. We are given the Bible to help us walk uprightly.

Surviving Sepsis: A Journey of Hope and Resilience

September 17, 2024 — At the age of 27, one of our dedicated hospitalists, Justin Hoskins, APRN, faced a life-threatening battle with sepsis. It all began one evening before work when he woke up with a very high fever, chills, and rigor. Recognizing the severity of his symptoms, he immediately went to the Emergency Department (ED). By the next morning, he found himself in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

All the providers were in his room, and Hoskins kept asking, "What's my blood pressure?" As he felt himself starting to lose consciousness, the providers eventually stopped responding to the question. Later, he found out that his blood pressure had dropped to the 50s/30s, and the medical team thought they were going to lose him.

This critical situation led to an emergency transfer to the University of Kentucky (UK), where he spent seven days in the ICU due to severe sepsis with septic shock. Thanks to the early recognition and treatment of sepsis by our skilled providers, along with the power of prayer led by Dr. Cornett, our hospitalist survived this harrowing experience.

Today, Hoskins shares his story in hopes of spreading awareness about sepsis and the dangers it poses to all members of our community. His journey is a testament to the importance of early detection, prompt treatment, and the support of skilled healthcare professionals.

All the Way, the Savior Leads: A Missionary Family’s Journey Through Life’s Questions, Twists, and Turns

The decision to move one’s family around the world and answer God’s call to serve in His global missionary work is never made lightly. Most new missionaries assume there will be problems and difficulties to figure out along the way. But when the curveballs, disappointments, and challenges are severe, some families wonder if it's best to pack it up and move back home.

For MTW missionaries John and Ellen Buerger, this was where they found themselves three years into their work serving in Bulgaria. Before he and his family moved to Bulgaria, John had attended seminary and served as a pastor for several years, so he and Ellen knew through experience that ministry life often includes difficulties and challenges.

But after three years in Bulgaria, it became clear that the lack of further educational opportunities for their special needs daughter would spark a season of seeking God. They decided to make a change. What makes these moments even more arduous for those on the mission field are the hard questions both internally and from others: “Did we somehow misunderstand God’s leading?”

God’s Initial Call to Bulgaria

John and Ellen Buerger first met at a Bible college in Omaha, Nebraska. After they married in 2001, John continued at Dallas Theological Seminary where the Lord gave him an interest in using his education to teach overseas. After finishing seminary, John served as a pastor in churches in Kansas and Texas. During this time John and Ellen adopted their oldest daughter, Aubrie.

Years later, the Buergers learned of an adoption agency in Bulgaria and pursued adopting for a second time. “The Lord had been doing a lot in our hearts,” John said. “By the time Emily [Emi] came across our radar, we knew she had Down Syndrome, and we also knew we wanted her.” While adopting Emi, the Buergers also got to know the MTW team serving in Bulgaria. In fact, when the Buergers traveled to Bulgaria to bring Emi home in June 2017, they also completed their vision trip with the MTW team in Sofia.

After coming back to Texas with Emi, John shared their opportunity in Bulgaria with the session of New St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church, where he’d been serving on the pastoral staff. The Buergers invited the prayer and counsel of the session as they considered the opportunity to join MTW’s work. After receiving encouragement from elders, friends, and family, the Buergers got the green light from MTW January 2018 and began making plans to move to Bulgaria.

Seeking the Lord as a Door Closes

The Buergers had enjoyed fruitful ministry in Bulgaria for over three and a half years when they began to wonder if they would be able to continue. “Emi was aging out of the school she had been attending in Bulgaria and there wasn’t a good next school situation for her there,” Ellen said.

So the Buergers faced a situation that many missionaries do. Should they stay and continue to ask God to provide solutions to these challenges, or were these challenges God’s way of moving them on to something else?

As John and Ellen sought the Lord, they decided to look at opportunities in other European cities and even considered returning to the United States. John said: “I began to think a lot about call and giftedness. While the place you serve is important, I don’t think it’s the most important thing.” John began to see that his call to use his gifts to benefit the body of Christ should also align with his callings as a husband and father. John explained that sometimes our call to a place and our call as parents can seem pitted against each other. “That’s sort of what we felt in Bulgaria. We had to put our options on the scales and weigh them with God’s help.”

John and Ellen's daughter, Emi, during their initial visit to Lisbon.

Spiritual Hunger in Portugal

The Buergers took a vision trip to Lisbon in 2022. The trip confirmed that there was a need for an international church plant. This change would provide better educational opportunities for their children and would allow both John and Ellen to use a fuller range of gifts in ministry. It seemed to John and Ellen that God was answering their prayers and solving their unique challenges as only He could.

Upon arriving in Lisbon in January 2023, the Buergers planned to move slowly and prioritize language study. “We don’t need to know Portuguese to minister to English-speakers in Lisbon,” John explained, “but it is important as we seek to know our neighbors and to have good rapport with the Portuguese people.”

Ellen added: “Most foreigners don’t take the time to learn Portuguese, so when we speak Portuguese, it makes a huge difference in their response to us.”

Home worship with the church plant, Bethany International Church, in Lisbon

When John and Ellen started this ministry, they instinctively watched for confirmation that God had prepared this work for them. “There was a Brazilian pastor who told us their whole church had been praying for an international church plant here for years,” Ellen said. “It was encouraging to know God had already been putting this work on people’s hearts.” The Buergers also saw God’s provision in the Owsleys, their friends from Dallas who already lived in Portugal and were well-networked. Ellen said: “God showed us we couldn’t do this alone, but that we could trust Him to provide what we needed.”

The Buergers and the Owsleys started worshipping together in their apartment in the spring of 2023. They sang and prayed together, studied the Bible, and had lunch. Through conversations with friends, the word about Bethany began to spread. And so without trying to grow, they soon had 15 people coming regularly by the end of their first summer in Lisbon.

Now in the summer of 2024, 20 to 30 people regularly attend Bethany and the church is praying for a new space.

Prayers for the Future

The Buergers are excited to see the work in Portugal grow. “We’d love to have a trained worship leader join the team,” John said.

They also see an opportunity for ministry among the children and young people. “There are many youth in the immigrant community. We have eight high schoolers coming and worshipping with us. They are looking for the church to be like a family to them. A lot of them are living life on their own and need the light of the gospel,” Ellen said. “We are praying specifically for the Lord to move among the youth, because we see they are spiritually hungry.”

John said there are also opportunities in Lisbon for someone with pastoral gifts who would like to share in the preaching and teaching ministry. He said, “We’d love team members with whom we could think through ministry strategy and develop a holistic [plan].”

The Buerger’s story is a wonderful illustration of the Christian life. We all naturally long for God to clearly lay out His plan for our lives, but He often chooses to lead us step by step, not wasting any of the stops along the way. As John said, “We loved our time in Bulgaria. Even though our time there was relatively short, God has not wasted that time and work.”

God calls us to follow His lead step by step and trust Him for the future work He’s “prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph. 2:10). Our life and ministry may not always go as we expect, but as we walk with God, we can trust Him to lead us as we commit to fulfilling His purposes. The coming tide of faith in europe.

Across Europe missionaries are watching the Spirit move with a rapidly accelerating pace as God opens door after door.

Christ Will Build His Church

Europe is the new “dark continent.” Churches are being turned into bars and museums. But does that mean the European Church is without hope?

Goliath Must Fall: Two Gospel Stories

In a hard-to-reach, largely atheistic European city, these stories declare the gospel to be "the power of God unto salvation."

Pray for John and Ellen Buerger, missionaries serving in Portugal, and their children, as they face the ups and downs of missionary life. Pray also for the ministry in Lisbon.

Pray for the people of Mati, Greece, who are responding with spiritual openness following disaster response efforts of the Greek Evangelical Church and MTW.

Give thanks to God for a movement of the Spirit spreading across Europe opening doors that have been long-shut.

Pray for the declining Church in Europe. Many see Europe as post-Christian and without hope. But we know that Christ will build His church.

Pray for the Lord to raise up new missionaries and to provide financial support for recently approved missionaries.

Pray for two women, Monika and Andrea, who have recently come to faith against the odds in a hard-to-reach, largely atheistic European city. Pray for Monika, that God would continue to heal her, give her a new purpose, and protect her life from physical harm, and for Andrea, that she would grow deep roots of faith and be a witness to those like her—unlikely subjects—of the reality of the grace of God.

Pray for internationals from around the world living in Brussels, Belgium, and for the MTW team working there to reach them with the truth of Christ.

Pray for Immanuel Church in Brentwood, West London, and for the surrounding community, that God would strengthen believers and draw people to Himself.

Pray for the new church plant in Belgium, Hope Church International of Brussels. Pray that God would draw many from this post-Christian city to Himself.

Give thanks for the work God is doing in South Asia in the wake of COVID lockdown relief. Ask God to grow the new believers who came to faith in Christ as a result.

Preston perry's journey from gang violence to evangelism: 'can't make disciples if you don't talk about sin'.

Preston Perry

Preston Perry’s journey from the violent streets of Chicago to becoming a passionate voice for Christ is a story marked by transformation, resilience and, perhaps most notably, a calling to spread the Gospel in a way that reaches beyond words.

Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, Perry, a spoken-word poet, performing artist and husband to author Jackie Hill Perry , was no stranger to trauma.

He witnessed gang violence and the murder of loved ones — experiences he told The Christian Post hardened his view of the world and left him questioning the existence of a just God.

"My uncle who raised me was murdered; my friend was murdered; my cousins were murdered," he recalled.

Yet, it was within this environment that Perry found his faith and developed an approach to evangelism that emphasizes winning hearts over arguments.

“I grew up in a melting pot of different worldviews, religions and violence,” the father of four recalled, adding that his skepticism towards Christianity was rooted in the suffering he saw around him.

"It was hard for me to reconcile in my mind that there was a God, a just God, seeing so much violence and struggle," he explained.

It wasn't until he encountered the Gospel at a house church at 16 that he began to understand the gravity of sin and the reality of a God who hates evil.

That initial encounter with the Gospel was a turning point. Perry vividly remembers the pastor speaking about a God who loves yet must hate evil to be truly just. For the first time, Perry said he grasped the seriousness of his own actions and the lifestyle he was leading — but true repentance didn't come easily.

"I didn't want to deal with the lifestyle that I was living," he said. “Selling weed, fornicating, breaking in cars. I mean, I did it all. I didn't want to give up that life.”

The wake-up call came with the tragic death of a friend, a moment that God used to convict Perry of his spiritual deadness.

"I felt God telling me, 'This is you. You're dead in your sin," he said.

Soon after, "God in His sovereignty" prompted Perry to move in with his aunt, who introduced him to a man named Gary. Through Gary's mentorship, Perry experienced transformative discipleship that went beyond sermons and Scripture studies. Rather than preaching to Perry, Gary invited him into his life, showing him what Christianity looked like up close.

"He allowed me to follow him, and I was able to see what Christianity looked like up close and personal," Perry recalled. "I just needed to see that. When I think about the way Gary discipled me, when he would go to New York, he brought me along with him. When he went to the grocery store, he brought me along with him. When he went to go play basketball, he bought me along with him. I saw him loving people. I saw him forgiving his neighbors. I saw him repenting of his sin."

Perry drew a parallel to the Gospel account where Jesus' disciples first followed Him in Luke 7.

"They said, 'Rabbi, where are you staying?' which is basically saying, 'Rabbi, teach us by showing us how you live,'" Perry said, pointing out that the disciples didn't ask when the next sermon would be or when the next miracle might happen. Instead, they sought to learn by observing Jesus in His daily life.

For Perry, this kind of discipleship was far more impactful than any sermon or conference could have been. "What Gary did for me in my life, he showed me that this urban, 22-year-old man not only claims Jesus, but he walks with Jesus as closely a life of Jesus is tangible for me too," he said.

However, the most profound lesson Perry learned from Gary came not from his successes but from his failures. Gary experienced a moral failing when he flirted with another woman, an action he confessed to Perry.

"He looked at me and he repented, and he said, 'Preston, I feel so convicted,'" Perry recounted, adding that Gary's humility gave him a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Christian.

"Christianity isn't about behavior modification. It's about a heart change," he said.

Perry, who leads the "With the Perrys" podcast with his wife, lamented the modern church's approach to evangelism, where often the focus is on filling seats and avoiding difficult conversations about sin. Based on his own journey, Perry said he believes it's crucial for a healthy church to address the sinful nature of the human heart.

"You cannot have a healthy church if you do not talk about the sin nature of someone's heart," Perry said. "You could fill seats by not talking about sin, but you can't truly make disciples if you don't talk about sin."

Perry's belief in the impact of a more intimate, life-on-life approach to discipleship and evangelism is reflected in his new book, How to Tell the Truth: The Story of How God Saved Me to Win Hearts — Not Just Arguments .

In it, he urges believers to see people as image-bearers rather than projects.

"When we become more connected with the information we know and not the God that we know, we start to treat people like projects and not image-bearers," he said.

He advised Christians to be more inquisitive, learning to serve others by asking the right questions.

"Every heart has a cry. We just won't hear it if we don't ask the right questions," he said. "What I try to do is, with my evangelism is, instead of going now and just throwing Jesus on them, how can I ask them questions that will make them feel heard and that will spark a conversation, while I'll be able to give Jesus to them in a natural way?"

For those who feel intimidated by the prospect of evangelism, Perry emphasizes that it can look different for everyone. He encourages believers to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading, highlighting that boldness in evangelism is about obedience to God rather than fearlessness before people.

"God wants to use all of us how he has uniquely made us," he said. "If God made us all different, what makes us think He wants to use us all the same?"

In a culture that often prioritizes instant results, Perry also underscored the importance of being a seed planter. Simple acts of faithfulness, he said, can have lasting impacts that may not be immediately visible.

"Our job is to get the Gospel, and it's the Holy Spirit's job to convert people to himself," he said. "God wants us to be faithful with the Gospel message and trust that He will give increase."

A Journey of Growth and Support: My Experience at MoEngage

  • UPDATED: 18 September 2024

article

Reading Time: 4 minutes

We spoke to Budi Anggakusumah, a Customer Success Manager at MoEngage about his journey and experiences in the organization. Here’s a transcript of the interview.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey before joining MoEngage?

Hi, I am Budi Anggakusumah and I am a Customer Success Manager at MoEngage. I am part of the Customer Success team in Southeast Asia. I enjoy playing video games, walking around with my family, and reading a book when not working. Before MoEngage, I worked for an IT Delivery (Infrastructure) company. While the work was enjoyable, I found myself dealing with stagnant infrastructure.

I’ve always been interested in marketing and customer engagement. Although I did not have relevant work experience, I found this space fascinating. After researching several companies, I pursued a position at MoEngage. This transition was a game-changer. I was able to explore my potential in a dynamic and challenging environment. Looking back, this decision has led to a deep sense of fulfillment and growth.

about our journey

How has your journey been as part of Team MoEngage?

When I first joined MoEngage, I was warmly welcomed by my colleagues and supervisors, who went above and beyond to help me adapt to the company and my role. I have improved my technical and soft skills in communication, problem-solving, and adaptability. These skills have enriched my professional and daily interactions, allowing me to navigate complex client interactions and manage challenging situations easily.

about our journey

During my early days at MoEngage, I worked closely with senior colleagues to serve our clients. Eventually, I got the opportunity to manage SMB clients independently. After three months, I was entrusted with full responsibility to support a client, allowing me to delve deeply into the world of customer engagement and gain first-hand experience working with MoEngage clients.

It’s been 2 years since I joined the team. Within this period, I was entrusted to support enterprise clients in my region, helping them solve customer engagement challenges and drive business results for their organizations.

about our journey

What do you like most about working for MoEngage?

There are many things that MoEngage offers to its employees that many other companies don’t.

1. Inclusive work culture

Working at MoEngage is fun! The work culture at MoEngage is fast-paced, productive, and transparent. For example, we host monthly online coordination meetings with our international partners. It’s an excellent opportunity to openly discuss challenges and share exciting discoveries in our field, collaboratively finding practical solutions. These meetings serve as a bridge for us to tackle and overcome challenges.

about our journey

2. Supporting dreams beyond work

Outside work, I focus on creating a nurturing environment for my family. When I applied for a home loan, MoEngage went above and beyond to guide me through the bank approval process. Despite the initial setbacks of securing a virtual work office, they provided unwavering support, offering to vouch for my employment and income stability. Their assistance with the paperwork, which included preparing the necessary documents and liaising with the bank, was invaluable. The bank finally approved my mortgage. This support has truly filled my heart with immense pride. I am grateful to MoEngage for their support in making my home dream a reality.

3. Recognizing dedication and hard work

MoEngage celebrates employees who are passionate about their work. The company acknowledges individual contributions with diverse quarterly awards, inspiring employees to excel. For Rapper Lil Tecca, There Was Only Ever a 'Plan A.' His New Album Reflects the Journey

NEW YORK (AP) — There's the story everyone knows about Lil Tecca, and then there is Tyler Sharpe, the rapper-producer with big aspirations and the dedication to see it through. His fourth studio album , appropriately titled “Plan A,” out Friday, isn't a culmination of his career to date — but it does reflect the journey.

“‘Plan A’ summarizes my plan for life,” he told the Associated Press. “It’s never a plan B.”

The popular narrative goes a little something like this: Five years ago, a then-teenage MC from New York released “Ransom,” introducing the world to his singsong-y, AutoTune-inspired flow and hook-heavy melodies. People loved it, and quickly. As of last month, the Recording Industry Association of America has accredited it eight-times platinum.

A hit at the start of a career is usually a sure-fire way to kneecap it, to burn bright and fast, but Lil Tecca managed to avoid the cliche. He has a loyal and fervent fanbase, and he never let the hype overwhelm him. The music was always first. It's why his last album, “Tec,” which arrived almost exactly a year before “Plan A,” was celebrated in hip-hop circles, with tracks like “500 lbs” and an inspired collab with Kodak Black, “Hvn on Earth.”

For this album, Tecca enlisted the producers he’s been working with since day one — like Rio Leyva, Taz Taylor and the like — to evolve the sound he's spent the last few years cultivating. “My most favorite people to collaborate with are producers,” he says. “We mainly create with no expectations."

Their process hasn't changed much from the early days: Tecca picks a beat and freestyles or writes to it. “Sometimes I might just rap on the loop. No beat, no drums, no nothing,” he says. “The only difference is just sharpening the craft.”

There's only one listed feature on the album — Don Toliver on the futuristic trap-rock, “I Can't Let Go.”

“Don Toliver is fire,” he says, simply. “When it came to having the Don song on there, it just felt like the perfect moment, honestly, for what I was trying to achieve in that first half of the project.”

Part of that goal is transparency.

“This one is definitely way more personal. I'm speaking about things I’ve never spoken (about) like my mom and stuff like that,” he says, referring to the smooth throwback, “MAMA.”

“So I kind of just wanted to let people take another step closer to me, on the personal side."

It's found in songs about relationships and miscommunication, too, like the single “Taste.”

Tecca says the many elements that make up “Plan A” manifest in a few different ways, fashion among them. He's been wearing a lot of leopard print lately; it appears on the album cover, the single artwork for “Bad Time,” and elsewhere. “Fashion, specifically, is just another way I express myself,” he says. “I kind of learned it from going to a uniform school. It’s like those Fridays where you get to wear what you want. You feel different... It's definitely another layer to who I am.”

As for future plans — he's got those mapped out. Video games, film, TV, they're all ambitions. “I honestly want to do everything that I’m into, I want to show my version of it,” he says. “So I’m into games. I want to show my version of what like, the best game is. I’m into movies. I want to show my version of what the best movie is.”

“Mentally, I'm definitely already in the next chapter,” he says.

But for now, it's all about “Plan A.” And he hopes new listeners and his dedicated fans will join him for the ride.

“My music isn’t just about me. My music is sort of just the soundtrack to the people that support me in the world that I put my music in,” he concludes. “My No. 1 priority is to inspire the people that actually believe in me.”
