Review: Derren Brown: Showman, King’s Theatre Glasgow
Derren Brown brings his spectacular new show Showman to Glasgow this week – which has to be seen to be believed.
Brown is a commanding presence on stage – oozing charisma and charm. To see him up close and on an intimate scale is a real pleasure.
From its opening to the interval, there is absolutely no let up. It’s a fast-paced interactive experience like no other.
Despite a slight dip in momentum in the second Act, Brown has the audience in the palm of his hand – hanging on his every word.
Showman showcases Derren Brown at his very best. It encapsulates hypnosis, magic and trickery in a devilishly clever package.
Brown’s command of his craft is second to none. He’s one of the UK’s best known illusionists – and it’s clear to see why.
His ability to work a crowd is impressive. On one hand, we’re his victims – but on the other, the whole thing would collapse without total buy in from those assembled.
The audience is sworn to secrecy about the show and we have no intention of breaking that vow.
All that can be said is that as nights at the theatre go, Showman is one of the freshest, most engaging and enjoyable nights out there. Don’t miss it.

LATEST NEWS
I always cite the 2018 Derren Brown show Underground as one of the most difficult reviews that I have had to write. How do you describe a performance when you've been sworn to secrecy?
The same rules apply to the 2022 tour Showman . The audience are asked not to discuss it with anyone and press are told not to put anything about the contents of their show in their reviews. Hmm.
One thing that I can definitely talk about and perhaps one of Brown's most impressive feats is the way he captivated the audience. In 20+ years of theatre-going, I'm not sure I have ever witnessed such impeccable behaviour. While the audience were asked to keep their mobile phones on at the beginning, I didn't hear a single beep, the crunch of a Pringle or even a hushed whisper throughout the performance. If its some sort of mind control trick, it's one I'm very much on board with.
The other thing I think I'm allowed to pass comment on is Brown's showmanship. He's warm, funny and charismatic. There is audience participation but it is done on a completely voluntary basis and good-natured. I've also never been in a crowd before where people are quite so keen to get up on stage.
As for the illusions, I can't tell you about those. I'm not entirely sure I could even if I wanted to. The atmosphere in the theatre was brilliant, the audience was completely hooked throughout and Derren Brown is certainly a master of his craft.
Derren Brown : Showman is at the King's Theatre, Glasgow until 12 March.

Everybody has heard of Derren Brown - but if you haven't seen him in action, you might be a bit confused about what he does.
He is described as a mentalist and illusionist, which could have a number of definitions if you have not seen a professional in action before.
However, once you see Derren live, you won't be confused about what he does, but you'll be baffled at how he does it.
Read more: 'Official mansion tester' offers a chance to secure dream job and be paid to live in luxury
The talented mind-trickster kicked off his Showman tour at Theatre Royal Plymouth with several performances between August 28 and September 4 - his first brand new theatre show in six years.
As Showman "remains a closely-guarded secret", we cannot reveal too much about the show, but what we can tell you is you will leave wondering how Derren manages to do what seems impossible.
Showman puts the audience at the heart of the show and encourages you to get involved, with a special request for anyone who attends to bring a small sentimental item with them.
All will become clear, we promise.
I attended the show with my partner, who is sceptical of everything - and even his jaw-dropped with some of the things Derren was able to do.
One thing we can tell you is that members of the audience are pulled up on stage, starting with four couples.
Four men are met with the dreaded question 'what is your partner's most annoying habit' - which is a very specific question that would be different for each couple. The four other halves then are invited on stage, but told to stand shuffled and not to give away who is their partner.
One man told how his partner could not load the dishwasher properly, while another didn't like that his partner was 'always rushing him'.
While the average person would have no idea, Derren was able to easily identify whose hearts were intertwined - but we had no idea how.
We spent the evening of the show discussing if we saw the same things and then the following week questioning how parts of the show were even physically possible.
So if you want to laugh, cry, feel understood and question everything, then Showman is for you.
Derren is now embarking on a UK-wide live tour, visiting 36 different places from Glasgow to Bournemouth.
A message from Derren on his website reads: “All I can reveal at this point is that the show will ultimately be about you, the audience member, because that’s what I find most interesting.
"There are places I’d like to take you where we haven’t been before. I always aim to have it deliver more than you’d expect.
"I’m excited to be at the starting point of that process. Getting it on the road will be my favourite part of the year.”
