On this day, you’ll find almost all supermarkets fully stocked with the Beaujolais Noveau, and most bars will make it special and some will even offer free tastings.

While the wine is not fancy at all (it’s also fairly priced) since it’s usually a new wine with less than 2 months of maturity, the tradition has become so popular that everyone is always looking forward to it.

In the same way, the wine is sometimes good and some other times questionable, but regardless, it’s a great way to celebrate with loved ones with glasses of wine.

If you happen to be spending November in Paris, one of the public holidays you’re likely to witness while on your vacation is Armistice Day .

Observed annually on 11th November, Paris and France, in general, come together to honor people who died during World War I and other wars with a ceremony.

Held at the monumental Arc de Triomphe , the event is graced by the French President, who lays a wreath by the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (located under the arch) to pay respects to the fallen soldiers. On top of this, a military parade is held along the Champs-Élysées.

To pay your respects and get a good look at the festivities, head to the Arc de Triomphe in the 8th Arrondissement on the morning of Armistice Day before exploring the rest of the city.

8. Catch a cabaret show

With the weather becoming colder and nights longer, a great way to spend a November evening in the city of light is to attend a cabaret show.

Believed to be an integral part of the Paris tourism experience, irrespective of which time of year you visit, you’ll find four different locations holding great cabaret shows, each different than the other.

These include Crazy Horse , Lido , Paradis Latin , and Moulin Rouge which is the most popular. You can choose from traditional French performances and contemporary sensual ones, depending on what you’re looking for.

The cabaret is also a great place to get all glammed up like the French high class used to and go on a date with your partner!

These shows are very popular so you’ll need to book in advance to get a spot! You can go to any but the one I recommend is this show at Moulin Rouge . It is electric, fun, and comes with champagne.

You can instead book this one if you prefer to watch the show while enjoying dinner and champagne.

While Moulin Rouge is my favorite and the most famous, some people prefer the cabaret show at Lido since it’s a bit less touristy and cheaper! If that’s you, then you can book it from here .

9. Attend the festival of lights at Jardin des Plantes

One of the best places to visit in Paris in November is the expansive park of Jardin des Plantes to enjoy the iconic Festival of Lights , held annually during winter in Paris from late November until January .

With unique light formations, lanterns, and illuminated animal species lighting up the winter evenings, a night spent at this one-of-a-kind event is sure to be memorable.

The festival takes place annually and has a different theme every year, hoping not just to put up an aesthetic and enjoyable event but also to spread awareness about pressing issues with a focus on the evolution of the life of endangered species.

A great blend of learning, admiring, and soaking in the beauty of an intricately designed exhibition, this event held in the 5th Arrondissement is highly sought after, so be sure to book your tickets in advance!

Held usually in the first week of November, Salon du Chocolat is the world’s biggest chocolate event!

Quite literally an event out of a movie, it is obviously one of the best places to visit in November with kids or any chocolate junkie for that matter.

With over 500 chocolate makers coming from over 60 countries across the globe, here, you’ll find the most famous chocolatiers and pastry makers.

The event involves various activities like a chocolate fashion show, pastry workshops, tastings, chocolate sculptures, and more.

You’ll be able to learn from experts in the field, create delicacies, and take them back home to share your creations with friends and family.

Usually from the end of October to the early days of November at Paris expo Porte de Versailles for 5 days, this is an event you shouldn’t miss if you’re a chocolate lover.

By the second week in November, the big Paris department stores unveil their spectacular Christmas window displays and dazzling lights and decorations begin to sparkle across the city. 

You may notice the days getting shorter and the air crisper, but November weather in Paris usually offers mellow sunny days for enjoying the changing leaf hues. 

Stroll through any of the city's many parks such as Tuileries Garden and Luxembourg Garden to soak up the fall foliage colors  and enjoy the last late-blooming flowers.  Versailles also offers lovely colors in the gardens, plus smaller crowds touring the palace.

Les Vitrines de Noël - Christmas Window Displays in Paris - Schedule

Five famous big Paris department stores - Galeries Lafayette, Printemps Haussmann, Bon Marché, BHV Marais, and La Samaritaine - reveal their spectacular Christmas window decorations in early November, usually during the first half of the month.  It's the perfect reason to take a holiday stroll.

The imaginative Christmas window displays enchant adults and children alike, and become more fantastic and creative with animations and music each year - and of course draw shoppers inside where even more d azzling decorations create holiday cheer.

This year, BHV will be the first to reveal their window at 5pm on Wednesday, November 8. 

Galeries Lafayette usually boasts the most elaborate holiday windows featuring with animated shows on repeat throughout most of the day and evening.

Christmas Lights & Holiday Decorations

Christmas lights ("Illuminations") and decorations start to appear in Paris starting in early November and continue through early January (until just before the January sales begin).

By December, you can see festive lights, decorations, and Christmas trees in all the city's key shopping districts.  Some are quite elaborate, especially on the Right Bank.

One of the best ways to see the Christmas lights in Paris (and get a tour of top attractions and neighborhoods) is by taking one of the popular open-top bus holiday lights tours.

Armistice Day Ceremony in Paris - November 11, 2024

Pay your respects to those who died or were injured during war - almost 1.6 million French soldiers died during World War I and II combined - on Armistice Day, November 11.   Armistice Day was established on November 11, 1918 as combat ended during World War I - the "war to end all wars."

In a somber ceremony at the base of the Arc de Triomphe, the French president inspects the troops and lays a red, white, and blue wreath near the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which honors all French troops who died in the war.  A solemn vigil takes place at the Tomb in the evening.  Both remembrances always occur on November 11.

Paris Christmas Markets Opening in November

Filled with sparkling lights and decorations, the smell of roasting chestnuts , cups of hot mulled wine, and Swiss-style chalets overflowing with special  holiday foods, hand-crafted gifts, and decorations , Christmas Markets start popping up all over Paris in mid-to-late November. 

These festive holiday markets originated in Germany, but have been a popular tradition in Paris and other French cities since Medieval times.  Today, you'll find them all over the city, with the largest ones attracting large crowds.

The Paris Christmas Markets opening during November typically include three of the biggest and best:  Tuileries Garden Christmas Market (opening this year on November 19, Saint Germain Christmas Market, and La Defense Christmas Market  (opening on November 16, the earliest opening date we've seen so far for this year).  Exact dates are usually announced about 3-4 weeks in advance.

Christmas Lights Turn On in Paris

Christmas lights ("Illuminations") and decorations start to appear in Paris starting in mid-November and continue through early January (usually until right before the January sales begin).

Where can you see the city's most gorgeous lights?  Head to Champs-Elysees, where thousands of strands of energy-efficient lights covering 400 trees light up the famous avenue.  A lighting ceremony takes place at 5pm on November 19 (to be confirmed) , with the avenue pedestrian-only for the occasion.  Lights will be on 5pm - 11:45pm every day through January 2, 2024, except for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve when they stay on all night.

Day Trip to Mont Saint Michel in November

November is the perfect month to visit Mont Saint Michel, the magnificent medieval abbey rising from a tiny island just off the Atlantic Coast between Normandy and Brittany.

Festival of Lights at Paris's Jardin des Plantes  

The annual winter Festival of Lights returns to the Jardin des Plantes (Botanical Garden) in Paris's 5th arrondissement, with giant illuminated statues of animals creating a magical experience during the evening. 

The topic year is the ecosystem of the jungle and the balance of nature in tropical forests of Asia, Oceania, South America, and Africa.

Although the exhibition attracts almost 400,000 visitors each year, the garden never seems crowded.

You can see the creatures unilluminated during daytime hours without a ticket (in other words, for free), but the ticketed event which begins after dark is more spectacular.

Dates:   November 20 - January 19, except for Dec. 24 & 31, 6pm - 9:30pm, with last entry at 8:30pm, and until 11pm (last entry at 10) on Friday, Saturday, & school holidays (dates and times to be confirmed)

Salon du Chocolat 2024

Part trade show, part entertainment, the Salon du Chocolat lets you immerse yourself in all things chocolate as over 500 chocolate producers, pastry chefs, candy makers, and artisans from around the world present five days packed with activities and events. 

You can attend cooking demos by top chefs at the Pastry Show, discover the wonders of chocolate at the Cacao Show, indulge in tastings at the Chocosphere, and enjoy a fashion show with models dressed in chocolate. 

Kids at this family-friendly event love the fun workshops set up just for them - and of course, the chocolate.

PhotoSaintGermain  2024

Almost three dozen Saint Germain galleries, specialty museums, bookstores, cultural venues, and even Hotel La Louisiane (storied haunt of jazz age and later musicians, including Jim Morrison) stage PhotoSaintGermain during late October and November to celebrate contemporary photography and emerging photographers with exhibitions, presentations, studio visits, and meet-ups. 

If you love to see what's new and trending in the art of photography, don't miss this wonderful opportunity to visit the participating galleries and other venues.  Check the event's website for addresses, event dates, and an interactive map of locations.  As you'll see, many of the galleries are clustered in Saint-Germain's "Design District," so you can easily do your own self-directed art stroll.

Festival d'Automne (Autumn Festival) Paris - 2024

The Paris Autumn Festival  (which extends until the end of January) showcases the latest creations and artists (international as well as French) in contemporary dance, theater, music, cinema, and visual arts at a variety of venues around Paris, including Galeries Lafayette in the 9th, the Grand Hall at Parc de la Villette in the 19th arrondissement, the Pinault Collection at Bourse de Commerce and Louvre in the 1st, and Pompidou Center in the 4th, just to name a few.

This is a hugely popular festival, with over 50 events (many of which extend over several or more days) at over 70 venues in and near Paris.

Lower airfares, shorter lines, and beautiful Christmas markets are just a few of the draws to Paris in November.

As the leaves change and people swap their decorative gourds for twinkle lights, many travelers around the world are looking for a place to visit at the end of fall.

Though the old Cole Porter song "I Love Paris" points out that the French capital has its charms with each season, autumnal traditions and smaller crowds make November the perfect time to visit the City of Light.

Airfares are typically lower than usual, according to tourism industry professionals, so a few days in Paris won't have to break the bank. Each year, November tends to be one of the city's calmer moments, as it sits between the throngs of August arrivals and the crush of Christmas tourists.

Visitors won't have to spend an hour to get into the Musée Rodin or the Louvre, and the lull can give travelers the chance to experience Paris as the Parisians do. With the heat lamps turned on, café-goers can enjoy a "vin chaud" (mulled wine) or "grog" (hot lemon rum tea) on terraces across the city.

What to do in Paris

While the crisp air doesn't have quite as much bite as it does in New England, the trees that line the Champs Elysées and other boulevards throughout Paris shine with red, orange, and yellow leaves. Free merry-go-rounds and ice-skating rinks dot the Champs-Elysées and the area near Hôtel de Ville.

Alongside old traditions, Parisian authorities want visiting the Ile-de-France region, which includes Paris, to be as easy as possible. Multi-lingual guides offer free (donation-based) walking tours via Paris Greeters , a group of volunteers who are passionate about introducing the City of Light to visitors from a local's perspective.

The Paris region also offers a City Pass that doubles as a metro ticket and allows entry to several popular attractions, in an effort to prevent tourists from carrying large sums of cash throughout the city.

Since the crowds of holiday season travelers may not have yet arrived, visitors to the Paris region in November can still take advantage of many of the festive traditions, as most department stores have already unveiled their gorgeous window displays and decorative lights drape the streets and windowsills.

One must-see tradition is the Christmas markets or "marchés de Noel." Set up throughout Paris, these festive installments allow vendors and craftsmen from throughout the country to sell their artisan products. It's the perfect place to pick up one-of-a-kind gifts for friends and family, including everything from Savon de Marseille and sachets of lavender from Provence to salted caramels and gingerbread.

Other seasonal delights include the autumn festival, which incorporates art, music, and other theater performances, according to the website for the tourism development agency Atout France .

The arrival of the Beaujolais nouveau, which takes place on the third Thursday of November each year, is a citywide tradition. The new red wine vintage is an event that becomes a cause for celebration, with tastings and events throughout the city.

Paris in November: Why to Embrace the Short, Cozy Days

Many tourists don’t even consider visiting Paris in November, fearing they’ll be treated to icy rain, miserably dark days and grumpy, sleepy locals. But while it’s certainly not for everyone– and you occasionally do encounter all of the above (I can’t lie)– the 11th month of the year offers some unexpected charm, too.

In November, the city celebrated for its light enters into a period of relative hibernation. This is waning season. The days grow short, with an average of only nine hours of daylight. Under such conditions, the locals tend to spend much more time indoors. The winter holiday season only starts to (literally) illuminate things toward the end of the month (see more below)– but until then, it’s steadily increasing darkness and a looming sense of quiet.

Yet there can also be joy and coziness in embracing the wane. This is an ideal time of year to really get to know Paris “behind the curtains”– those put up by the tourist industry, that is.

The Vibe: Intimate and Calm

I’d venture to say that November (perhaps along with January and February) is the month that’s most authentically Parisian, in that tourism is at a low ebb and the city turns inward a bit, focused more on locals and their well-being and entertainment than on visitors’.

{Why There’s Really No “Bes t” Time of Year to Visit Paris} 

Because of this dip in visitor numbers, there’s an unusual emphasis on traditional activities that bring people together in more intimate and laid-back ways. Think basement wine bars and warm cinemas. Think cafes with steamed-up windows and jazz music playing faintly in the background, as the clank of silverware and hum of conversation fills the air.

Think smaller exhibits and poetry readings, or warm French crepes and galettes gobbled down alongside Breton cider in small, rough ceramic bowls. Think wandering through the elegant covered passageways of the Grands Boulevards, admiring the old-world window displays and escaping the rain outside.

While Parisians have, like the rest of us, only recently discovered the concept of “hygge” imported from Denmark, there’s a French brand of coziness that’s always been present in the culture– and it certainly reigns in November.

What are the Pros and Cons of a November Trip to Paris?

I’ve already mentioned the opportunity to explore the city in a more authentic way as one benefit. This is also an excellent time to de-stress, carving out time in your busy schedule to read, contemplate some gorgeous examples of fine art and architecture, tuck into a plate of delicious, warming French dishes, or bundle up and enjoy an early winter walk.

The crowds thin considerably in November, a fact that many will love. While the city is busy year-round, this is one of the best times of year to visit if you’re somewhat claustrophobic, and/or loathe long lines.

On a related note, prices for air and rail tickets as well as hotel or B&B stays tend to be lower at this time of year. Still, I suggest booking early to get the best deals.

Another benefit? If you can’t come at year-end, a late November visit can still allow you to take in some of the winter holiday festivities . Read on to learn how.

And the cons?

Every month has its downsides, and November might be considered to have an unusual number of these.

Shorter daylight hours and a significant dip in average temperatures from October makes outdoor activities less attractive. This is not the best time of year to attempt a lot of day trips from Paris, since you’ll have to rush to get in as much daylight as possible.

Cold rain, sleet and snow is common in November , and can be quite unpleasant. You may find yourself wondering why you didn’t come at a more clement time of year.

And while it’s true that the city has a more authentic feel in its darkest month, locals can be a bit withdrawn and unwilling to engage. People tend to be tired and just want to get home after a long day at work.

Whereas a spring trip to Paris might find you chatting away with strangers on rooftop terraces or in parks, in November the atmosphere is degrees less sociable.

November Weather in Paris: What’s the Mercury Doing?

As I mention above, temperatures take quite a dip in November, especially near month’s end. Icy rain can put a literal damper on outdoor plans, while in past years occasional snow has taken aback locals unaccustomed to it so early in the year.

By the same token, there have occasionally been “heat waves” in November– the mercury climbed to 23 degrees C in 2015 at one point, which is more typical of May or September!

It’s actually a bit less wet this month than it is in late spring or summer. Still, there’s still a fair amount of rainfall, which means you should always come prepared for it.

How to Pack For a November Trip to Paris?

To contend with colder days and less sunlight to warm you up, make sure to pack plenty of sweaters, warm pants or wool skirts and tights.

Waterproof jackets, shoes and a good, thick scarf is a must.  Icy wind off the Seine might strike you as romantic, but if you have a bare neck it can be as unpleasant as Hades on a winter’s day.

Please don’t overlook the need for warm, waterproof shoes. When it rains, large, splashy puddles tend to form in some neighborhoods, and the last thing you want is to have to trudge around the city with wet, numb feet and sopping socks. The thought of it alone provokes shivers…

One thing I also recommend is a decent thermos , so you can brave the chilly conditions and walk around the city, sipping hot tea or coffee to stay motivated and warm.

Best Things to See and Do in November: A Few Suggestions

While, as I’ve already argued, November affords unusual opportunities to just relax and take in the world, there’s no shortage of stimulation in the capital. Take note of my suggestions below, and then perhaps head over to  the tour ist office website for a more complete list of events and activities in November.

1. Huddle up around a good glass of wine (or other warm drinks). 

Wine isn’t generally produced in Paris, but the city’s many charming wine bars are ideal places to huddle indoors with friends or travel companions, perhaps enjoying a spicy, warming glass of Burgundy or Cotes du Rhone red while tucking into a plate of creamy cheeses and crusty bread.

Wine bars I particularly love and recommend include Le Verre Volé (67 Rue de Lancry, Metro République or Jacques-Bonsergent), where the small plates are as delicious and beautifully prepared as the wine selection is discerning and creative; Frenchie Bar à Vins (6 Rue du Nil, Metro Sentier) where British patrons offer an interesting variety of French and international wines paired (if desired) with English cheeses; and Le Baron Rouge (1 Rue Théophile Roussel, Metro Faidherbe-Chaligny) , right off the beloved Aligre market.

Enjoy the Beaujolais Nouveau Season

November is also Beaujolais Nouveau season , when makers of this young red wine release their latest and bars around the city offer tastings, live music and other events.

2. Bask in photography exhibits and trends.   

Photography fan? If so, November is an ideal month to be in town. First, beeline to Paris Photo, the single-largest annual show in the world dedicated to the medium. Held each year under the grandiose rooftop of the Grand Palais, the event brings together hundreds of photographers, galleries, buyers and amateurs.

It’s a fantastic way to see work from promising new lenses as well as legendary ones– and perhaps even come away with a small acquisition. Some, especially works in smaller formats, are affordable for modest budgets.

In 2024, Paris Photo will be open from November 7th to 10th. It’ll be held this year at the newly renovated Grand Palais, which was refurbished in time for the Summer Olympics.

Also in November (some years) is the Salon de la Photo, a massive show at the Porte de Versailles convention center at the city’s southern edge.

This one’s worth a morning or afternoon (and the trip south) for anyone practicing photography whether as a hobby or as a professional ambition. Simple admirer? The convention is also a good place to make an acquisition.

3. Take in a film or two (or three).  

With over 300 movies playing a week at any given time, Paris remains a stomping ground (or lurking ground, as it were) for film aficionados.

Of course, a cold, dark, forbidding month like November provides the perfect excuse to spend a whole afternoon or evening at the cinema.

And if you end up hopping between a couple of classic old theatres in the Latin Quarter (like the Champo, shown above), you’ll be exploring an essential thread in the Parisian cultural and historic fabric. So no need to feel guilty about staying indoors for a spell…

Surréalisme at the Centre Georges Pompidou

In 2025, the National Museum of Modern Art at the Centre Pompidou will be closing for renovations expected to take several years to complete . Before it closes its doors, I recommend you try to visit in time to see a blockbuster exhibit on the 20th-century artistic and literary movement known as Surrealism. The show traces the history and legacy of this avant-garde movement, starting with French poet André Bréton’s 1924 Manifesto . The chronological show then spotlights major works from the likes of Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst and Joan Miró– as well as bringing to attention important work from much-overlooked female artists such as Leonora Carrington, Ithell Colquhoun and Dora Maar.

“The Pharaohs of Egypt” at the Atelier des Lumières

The Atelier des Lumières and its all-digital, multisensory exhibitions were initially dismissed as gimmicky by many critics– but they’ve arguably been proven wrong, with the center putting out a succession of wildly successive immersive digital shows since its opening. In 2024, two major new shows have been attracting large crowds: first, one that plunges visitors into the art, history and cultural legacy of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt (see image above).

Next up, “Orientalism” explores the eponymous movement in French art, with major works from the painters Ingres, Renoir and Delacroix brought to mesmerizing life through a show that brings together elements of light, music and color.

We Are Here* (Street Art at the Petit Palais)

If the history and cultural “phenom” of street art is of interest to you, I highly recommend this temporary show at the Petit Palais. The museum, already renowned for its permanent (and free) collections of Dutch and French masterpieces, is taking a bit of a risk with “We are Here”, an exploration of street artists and their massive cultural impact .

Through November 17th, 2024, beeline to the show to learn how artists such as Shepard Fairey, Invader, D*Face and Seth have shattered existing artistic barriers with their work (and had a major impact on wider culture). From the official website:

The exhibition features over two hundred works, all of which are presented in the same gallery space. This spectacular installation was designed as a tribute to the different art salons and fairs of previous times, like the Salon des Refusés and Salon d’Automne, at the origin of numerous artistic revolutions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The French baguette is an embodiment of the nation’s culinary tradition. It is a long loaf of bread made from lean dough, with an inimitable crispy crust. While this item is available almost anywhere, you just cannot miss out on having a few from Boulangerie Brun, or Painvie bakery.

Possibly the most popular cafe dish in all of France, the Croque-monsieur is quite a utilitarian food to eat. It is a crispy ham sandwich that oozes with cheese. A small amount of béchamel sauce is used to moisten it. In case you are starving, order a Croque-madame, which is basically Croque-monsieur topped with a fried egg. The French variety of Sauerkraut has a long-standing history that firmly etches its name in the Parisian archives. This brasserie (French for brewery) essential basically comprises of a generous helping of white cabbage cooked in riesling, duck/pork fat, garnished with herbs and garlic, and finally topped up with ham and bacon. Sit down at Bofinger to have the city’s best Choucroute.

This 18th-century dish owes its name and preparation to King Stanislaus, who had ordered the recreation of raisin brioche with Tokaji wine while serving his exile. Now, this dense cake is soaked in rum and filled with pastry cream. Stohrer and Bistrot Paul Bert serve the best Baba Au Rhum in Paris.

The major tourist season in France stretches from Easter to mid-September, but Paris has much to offer in every season. If you're dreaming of Paris in the springtime, May is your best bet, not rainy March and April—regardless of what some songs say about the latter. Paris in the early spring can be disappointingly damp, though it's relatively tourist-free; May and June are delightful, with good weather and plenty of cultural and other attractions. July and August can be sultry, stuffy, and uncomfortable. Early autumn is ideal. Cultural life revives after the summer break, and sunny weather often continues through the first half of October. The ballet and theater are in full swing in November. The weather is part wet and cold, part bright and sunny.

As one of the most successful films of the last decade, La La Land impressed all film buffs. Now the film, with Justin Hurwitz the composer himself , comes to Paris in November. Several times in recent years, iconic fantasy films like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings have gone under the skin of the audience with the Yellow Socks Orchestra .

While the uniquely beautiful soundtrack is played by the orchestra, the film plays on a big screen in the background. This is definitely not to be missed as a fan of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling!

Armistice Day, French National Holiday

It was the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 when the Allies and their opponent, Germany, signed the armistice agreement in Compiègne, France. Since then Armistice Day has been an important holiday in France.

World War I ended more than a century ago, but its memories still linger. There will be events throughout Paris and at the major battlefields to honor the fallen soldiers. The Paris branch of The Royal British Legion organizes an annual ceremony. Usually held in Notre Dame Cathedral, the ceremony will probably be held at Eglise St-Louis des Invalides while restoration work on the cathedral continues. Check their website to find out the exact time of the ceremony.

The big Paris event is the military parade that travels along Champs-Elysées and ends at the Arc de Triomphe . The President of France traditionally says a speech and lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. As this is such an important national holiday, many services will be closed.

Music and wine will be flowing on the third Thursday in November to mark the arrival of the new vintage of Beaujolais. There's a French law (of course) to enforce that the wine is released at exactly 12:01 AM. It's hard to believe that the wine is ready to drink just weeks after the harvest.

The Gamay grapes that make Beaujolais Nouveau are from the Beaujolais region, about a four-hour drive southeast of Paris. This narrow strip of land, just 34 miles long, is home to nearly 4,000 vineyards. The most well-known producer is Georges Duboeuf, the marketing genius behind the idea of creating a race from Beaujolais to Paris with the first bottles of the new vintage. In Paris, wine stores will be filled with the new release and many restaurants will have special celebrations and special menus to mark the event.

1. Best Time to Visit Paris

When is the best time to travel to Paris? “ Paris is always a good idea , ” and there is never a bad time to travel to Paris. The city has beautiful parks and picturesque streets that are great to explore under the sun. It also has some of the world’s best museums and other interesting indoor options when it rains or it’s too cold to be outside.

TIP: In general, the best time to go to Paris is from May to October, and then December for the Christmas Holidays .

If you are flexible with dates, important things to consider when you are planning a Paris trip are the low /high tourist seasons and the weather in Paris. This is what you need to know:

What is the best season to visit Paris? This graphic below represents the weather in Paris year-round, with average temperatures (in Celsius) and average rainfall (%).

>>   Spring is a good time to visit Paris. Spring means blue skies, the gardens in Paris in bloom , and animated café-terraces. The city is also famous for its cherry blossoms (check out my favorite cherry blossom spots in Paris ), usually in March and April.

However, temperatures are still fresh (minimums of 4C° to 10C°), with frequent showers. Don’t forget to pack an umbrella and a jacket in your day bag!

Spring Months in Paris

>> Summer in Paris comes with longer days and nice temperatures (maximums of 23C° to 25C°). With a long list of local festivals and events and fun outdoor activities everywhere, no wonder Paris is one of the best summer destinations in Europe !

However, summer is also the high season in Paris, which means more tourists, long lines to visit the main attractions, and higher prices.

>> Fall is, in my opinion, the best season for a first trip to Paris. The colors of the trees are gorgeous, temperatures are still pleasant (maximums of 11C° to 21C°), and there are fewer tourists. In the last couple of years, I could organize outdoor activities until mid-November, with bright and sunny days.

>> Winter in Paris is not the best time to visit Paris in terms of weather (minimums of 2C° to 7°C and only 4 to 5 hours of light), and sunset in Paris is very early. However, some people love to travel to Paris at Christmas time to see Paris’s decorations and illuminations and the best Christmas markets in Paris .

Paris is also a popular destination for Saint Valentine’s  in February. There are many romantic things to do in Paris !

Winter Months in Paris

Tourist Seasons in Paris

>>  The high season in Paris is considered from 1st April to 31st October. It means nice weather and more hours of daylight and many people will tell you this is the best time to visit Paris.

At the same time, the high season in Paris is not the best season for Paris travel in terms of budget (the best accommodation is sold out, and prices are higher). Also, the city is too crowded with tourists – especially in the summer – while locals are somewhere else on holiday.

>> The low season in Paris goes from 1st November to 31st March, except for Paris at Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Paris . This is the cheapest time to travel to Paris and the best time to visit to avoid crowds. If you decide to travel off-season, you will get a more local experience, and it will be easier to find good deals on accommodation, for example.

In the end, Paris is a movable feast and (sun or rain) you will have a great time!

Best Time to Visit Paris: Tips for your Paris Trip Planning

Be flexible with your dates. Flexibility is key, especially if you are planning a trip to Paris on a budget. Flight tickets or train tickets to Paris will be more expensive:

• During the school holidays in France
• During holidays in France or Europe
• Weekend trips (Friday to Sunday)
• During special events like New Year’s Eve or Saint Valentine’s Day.

If you are a museum lover visiting Paris for the first time, the best time to go to Paris will probably be the first weekend of the month when you can visit many museums in Paris for free. Some of these museums have this offer all year round, while other museums are only free during the winter months.

2. Booking your Flight or Train Ticket to Paris

Paris has three airports: Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) , north of Paris; Paris Orly (ORY) , south of Paris; and Paris-Beauvais (BVA) . Despite its name, Paris Beauvais is not in Paris but in the city of Beauvais (80 km north of Paris).

If you are traveling to Paris from somewhere overseas, you will probably land at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) . Paris Orly Airport (ORY) is used mainly for flights to /from Europe and North Africa, while Paris-Beauvais Airport (BVA) is mainly for Ryan Air flights.

Train Tickets to Paris

If you live in Europe, high-speed trains are a good and definitely a more eco-friendly option for your trip to Paris. Here are some of the main European destinations served from the stations in Paris.

• Gare du Nord: London (Eurostar), Brussels, Cologne, and Amsterdam (Thalys)
• Gare de l’Est: Germany, and Luxembourg
• Gare de Lyon: Switzerland (Geneva, Zurich), Italy, and Catalunya (Girona, Barcelona)
• Gare d’Austerlitz: Western Spain.

I like and recommend Omio to book train tickets from /to Paris. The website is straightforward to use, it is written in English, and it offers interesting promotions from time to time – Click here to buy your train tickets to Paris with Omio

My readers from the UK and Australia, however, prefer  Trainline . This website is also in English and works more or less like Omio.

So there’s the Omio team and the Trainline team, but you should always find the same information and ticket prices on both sites.

3. Don’t Skimp on Travel Insurance

Don’t skimp on Travel Insurance when you plan your trip to Paris. Since anything can happen while traveling, the best thing you can do for yourself is to be insured.

Before going through other aspects of your Paris planning, ensure you are completely covered before traveling to minimize the financial risks of theft, loss of luggage, or flight cancellation.

4. Where to Stay in Paris

Planning a trip to Paris for the first time can be challenging, especially when it comes to deciding which area you want to stay in Paris.

Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements (=districts of Paris), which are also administrative divisions. In each Paris Arrondissement , there is a town hall (Mairie), a mayor and elected officials, a council, a politician, and so on. Of course, each division is still subject to the city’s overall policy and the mayor of Paris, the socialist Anne Hidalgo.

To find your bearings in Paris , there is a little trick: the 1st Paris arrondissement is in the center of Paris, then the other Paris arrondissements are located forming a spiral turning clockwise, to finish in the 20th in the east. Paris Packing List for November

There’s nothing like Paris in the Fall. November is one of my favorite times to travel to Paris – the city is quiet before the holiday rush, the leaves have changed colors, and the heat lamps come out at the cafés.

My En Route to Rêverie Rêverie in Paris clients have the inside scoop on what to see and do in Paris in the Fall, but I thought I’d share what’s always in my bag for a November trip to Paris. If you need help with what to pack for Paris, look no further. 

1. Classic Wool Coat

The Sézane Johnson coat is such a timeless staple. It’s a great in-between coat to wear before the weather gets truly cold. I recommend sizing up if you plan to wear it over sweaters as it runs a bit tight in the shoulders I found.

I wear a size 8. I own this in both the Sand and the Black colors. You’ll see it reflected in Paris style on other French women, too.

The Abercrombie Dad Coat is another great option. And consider a leather jacket as well. And a trench coat is a must!

2. Sweater Blazer

I love that the J. Crew Ella sweater blazer hits at mid-thigh, giving it the silhouette of a coat. It’s a great knit with the right level of weight to it making it ideal to wear as both a cardigan and a lightweight coat.

I find it runs big so recommend ordering at least one size down. I sized down two sizes to an XS.

3. Casual sneakers

Comfortable sneakers are a must for Paris, no matter the season. I love the slightly thicker sole and color way of these Veja V-12 sneakers . I’m also a fan of their classic Esplar Logo sneaker in black and white. 

Of course I also always have my favorite white sneakers in tow, too. Pack a pair that aren’t new and your feet have adjusted to!

4. Low Heeled Booties

The Loeffler Randall Isla Booties are one of my most worn pairs of shoes. I’m all about prioritizing comfortable shoes, and these allow for loads of walking while also looking stylish. I pair them with slightly cropped jeans and with dresses or skirts. 

5. Umbrella

Fall in Paris means rain not if but when. This travel umbrella is the perfect size and opens and closes with ease. I’ve been bringing it to Paris for several years now and it’s held up so well in the unpredictable weather in Paris.

6. Classic Loafers

These Sam Edelman Loraine Loafers are another fall staple, they elevate any outfit. You’ll also notice a lot of Parisians wear loafers day to day – they are perfect for the cobblestone streets. This is a great option in black.

7. Catch-all Tote

Cuyana makes some of my all time favorite leather tote bags, and this one is no exception. I love how sleek and versatile this bag is – great with joggers and sneakers on the plane, or with a blazer and jeans for a day of shopping.

I personally own this one and love it. The double straps are so handy.

8. Silk Scarf

I always bring a scarf when I go to Paris as it can add a beautiful accessory moment to more simple, tailored outfits. Tie them on your bags, around your wrist or around your neck throughout your trip.

9. Crossbody Bag

I love how polished and timeless this DeMellier crossbody bag looks. It reminds me of the Celine Box Bag but at a much lower price point and still excellent quality. This  bag from Sézane is another great option.

10. Tweed skirt

A tweed skirt paired with a sweater or turtleneck is just so effortlessly Parisian! I find a lot of great ones at & Other Stories .

11. Long Sleeve Lace Top

I always bring a lace top of some kind with me to Paris to wear out in the evenings and this one is has been in my wardrobe for years (also comes in white). A lot of my favorite lace blouses also come from Sezane .

12. Straight Jeans

These perfectly-cropped Levis are perfect for pairing with loafers and an oversized blazer. I love the ever-so-subtle fade to them. I also own them in black which are particularly great in winter months. 

13. Lightweight Turtleneck

For less cold days, I always pack a tissue turtleneck . It’s great for layering under a jumper or a little dress.

14. Striped Sweater

I’m obsessed with La Ligne sweaters . They are true wardrobe staples and while this brand is certainly an investment – the pieces are beautifully crafted and made to last and never go out of style. This slightly cropped style is great for pairing with high waisted pants or denim.

15. Wide Leg Trousers

Trousers are certainly having a moment, I love the under $100 price point of these (and all the color options). I like to pair them with a white sneaker and tucked-in or cropped sweater. These are also my personal favorites.

16. Classic Blazer

I’m a blazer girl through and through and love to style my collection when in Paris in November. Mango makes a lot of affordable options that look higher end.

I also love a cropped little jacket this time of year, too.
