Go-Go’s to Celebrate Rock Hall Induction With Brief Tour

go go's tour 2022

The Go-Go’s (Photo: Chris Cuffaro; used with permission)

The Go-Go’s have announced several rescheduled 2022 dates to celebrate the band’s recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The concerts include intimate shows on the west coast at the end of March. They’ve also been tapped as the opening act for Billy Idol’s brief U.K. tour in June, the group’s first U.K. tour in 26 years. The group had been scheduled to play the dates just before and after New Year’s but they were postponed when a member of their “team” tested positive for Covid-19. (They also had dates scheduled in 2020 in other markets that were canceled due to the pandemic; it’s not known whether the group will follow these concerts with a lengthier tour.)

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Jan. 28 at 10 a.m. PT, with fan club and local pre-sales starting on Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. PT. Tickets can be purchased here .

The Jan. 25 announcement noted, “We are very pleased to be starting our west coast tour in just a few short weeks. Because every other band is also looking for venues, we’ve had to alter our routing a little, but we hope our fans will be as happy and excited to see us as we are to see them! Lots of love from The Go-Go’s!”

The Go-Go’s are the first multi-platinum-selling, all-female band to play their own instruments, write their own songs and reach #1 on the U.S. album chart.

Rooted in the early L.A. punk scene, the group’s core lineup is Charlotte Caffey (lead guitar, keyboards, vocals), Belinda Carlisle (lead vocals), Gina Schock (drums, percussion, vocals), Kathy Valentine (bass guitar, vocals) and Jane Wiedlin (guitar, vocals).

The Go-Go’s rose to fame following the release of their 1981 debut album, Beauty and the Beat , a collection of infectious tracks with huge hooks, which topped the Billboard chart for six consecutive weeks. It includes the favorites “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat” and resulted in a Grammy® nomination for Best New Artist.

On October 30, the Go-Go’s will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Tina Turner, Carole King, Jay-Z, Foo Fighters and Todd Rundgren in the Class of 2021.

In 2020 the band released their documentary,  The Go-Go’s , which premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews, achieving a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Alison Ellwood, the candid and archive-rich documentary assesses the group’s place in music and the first to set the record straight about their historical ascent to global stardom. Watch the trailer below.

In 2020, the Go-Go’s also released their first new recording in nearly 20 years, “Club Zero.” Valentine released her memoir in 2020. Schock will publish a coffee table photo book,  Made in Hollywood: All Access With the Go-Go’s , on Oct. 26.

“I truly had no idea that I was to become the Go-Go’s archivist,” says Schock. “I’ve always loved photography, so taking photos of the band was a natural process.”

GO-GO’s CONCERT REVIEW

go go's tour 2022

An Evening with The Go-Go’s

At house of blues, anaheim, march 29, 2022 by jordan west, after their long-delayed plans to tour were derailed because of the lockdowns, the reunited go-go’s gave their fans a treat at a sold out house of blues in anaheim., packed into the large venue were hundreds of smiling faces, and when the go-go’s came out to the strains of blondie’s 1976 hit “rip her to shreds,” the crowd screamed with delight. much to my surprise, blondie’s terrific drummer, clem burke, was manning the drum chair. it was later explained that go-go’s drummer gina shock was unable to join the band on their short tour, and burke had gladly offered to fill in. as a drummer myself, and a big fan of burke’s, i was delighted, and his powerful and precise drum beat gave the band the fuel it needed to fire off a fun and hit-filled performance..

go go's tour 2022

Opening with the surf-music inspired “Beatnik Beach,” all eyes were on lead singer Belinda Carlisle, dressed in a shimmery black fringed dress, which danced to the beat just like she did all evening. Her voice was on point as well, especially on songs like “Lust to Love” and the crowd favorite “Vacation,” which became quite the sing-along with their fans. Carlisle never lost her huge smile the entire evening, and seemed to be having the time of her life.

Guitarist charlotte caffey, on the other hand, seemed content with being steadfast still, rarely smiling, and playing her guitar and the occasional keyboard. the wonderfully bouncy “head over heels” got one of the loudest and aggressive responses of the evening. bassist kathy valentine looked and sounded lovely, sporting a huge smile on her face, and playfully addressed the crowd as she mentioned all the good things that have happened to the go-go’s the last few years. “the rock and roll hall of fame, the documentary, a new go-go’s song,” she proudly boasted. each statement was roundly applauded, and the band launched into “club zero,” the 2020 song that was featured in the biopic that aired on showtime..

go go's tour 2022

Quite a few cuts from their recording career were played and well received. “This Town” and “Tonight” from their debut, and “Get Up and Go” from “Vacation” were particular standouts, and the band sounded well-rehearsed throughout the show. The Go-Go’s co-founder, guitarist Jane Wiedlin, was her usually enthusiastic self – dressed in a priest frock, complete with collar and white cross – and jumped around the stage periodically. Her sweet vocals were in contrast to her slashing rhythm guitar chords on her glittery Gibson SG. After a false start, their huge hit “Our Lips Are Sealed” took the energy in the room to a new level, and Wiedlin extended her vocal part in the song a few measures, seemingly because she was enjoying it so much, that she didn’t want the song to end.

go go's tour 2022

The Go-Go’s ended their set quite predictably, with the drum intro to “We Got the Beat” bringing out a few hundred cell phones lighting up simultaneously. However, Wiedlin pleaded with the crowd to put the phones down and dance. And, for the second show in a row that I have attended, the crowd obliged for the most part, making it seem like 1981 all over again. I witnessed dance moves from people of all ages, moving and grooving to THE BEAT! Together, as they sang along with the band, this crowd was united as one, the joy on their faces showed exactly what a great song can do. In this day and age where “personal space” is demanded, all borders were forgiven.

At song’s end, the band left the stage briefly, and to the roar of the crowd, returned and did a rave-up version of the shangri-la’s 1964 hit “remember (walkin’ in the sand)” that belinda carlisle absolutely nailed. there were many generations in the house that could relate to that song, and i’m sure the 12 year old next to me could identify with the song’s “oh no no no no” part from its constant inclusion in tiktok videos..

go go's tour 2022

March 28, 2022

Valentine took the microphone and introduced the band members and thanked the audience for being there, as she and the other go-go’s were absolutely beaming with smiles. they finished the show with “can’t stop the world” from their debut record, the classic “beauty and the beat.” when the song was over, they waved to the crowd again and the house lights went on, signaling the end to a fun and enjoyable night. on the way out, there were plenty of happy faces, and sounds of people recounting their youthful stories about when the go-go’s and their songs were first played on the radio and, of course, the glory days of mtv., the go-go’s will play crypto.com arena tomorrow night, humphrey’s concerts by the bay thursday night, then head to europe with billy idol., show photo gallery, by green-eyed blonde photography.

Rock icons The Go-Go’s have announced that they will be touring with Billy Idol on a forthcoming UK run.

The band took to Twitter to make the announcement: “We haven’t had an opportunity to play for our British fans in 26 years and can’t wait to see you all.” Tickets for the tour—which kicks off in June of 2022—go on sale Thursday (9/30).

The Go-Go’s have been in the news of late, thanks to the 40th anniversary of their seminal Beauty and the Beat .

On July 8, 1981, The Go-Go’s released their platinum-selling, landmark debut. To celebrate the anniversary of its release, UMe/Interscope released Beauty and the Beat – 40th Anniversary Limited Edition pressed on pink vinyl with new cover art featuring a never-before-seen photo taken from the original album cover shoot. The project was reissued on September 10. Each copy is numbered and only was available at uDiscover, The Sound of Vinyl, and the band’s official store. Vinyl copies of the reissue have already sold out.

The Go-Go’s skyrocketed to superstardom after they released one of the most successful debut albums of all time . Beauty and the Beat is a collection of hook-laden, infectious songs that stayed at No. 1 on the Billboard charts for six consecutive weeks, spawning the hits “Our Lips Are Sealed” (named one of Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Pop Singles) and “We Got The Beat” and also earned them a Grammy nomination for “Best New Artist.” They have the notable distinction of being the only all-female band to write their own songs and play their own instruments on a No.1 album.

The Go-Go’s also  recently announced their 2021/2022 North American west coast dates to celebrate the band’s upcoming induction into the 2021 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The tour kicks off December 28, 2021 in San Francisco at the Masonic Auditorium. The band is also set to hit Los Angeles, Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, and San Diego.

Live reviews

Not to take any credit away from The Go-Gos, but it probably tells you a lot about the extent to which the modern music industry is dominated by men when you consider the fact that the Los Angeles based outfit are the only all-female group in history to top the Billboard charts having played all their own instruments and written all their own songs. Their career has been a staggered one, with an initial seven year run between 1978 and 1985 and a couple of brief reunions in the nineties ultimately followed by a fully-fledged reformation in 1999, albeit with a mildly diffferent lineup, which continues to this day. Whilst they’ve only produced one record since then - 2001’s God Bless the Go-Gos - they remain a popular live act, touring pretty much constantly in the fifteen years since their most recent reconvention. Their setlists continue to lean heavily on their biggest eighties hits, and frontwoman Belinda Carlisle, who has had plenty of solo success in her own right, remains a beguiling live performer, demanding attention with her superb voice and commanding stage presence. They lined up a farewell tour in 2010, but after injury forced its cancellation, they’ve showed no signs of wanting to call it quits.

I saw them in 1999 in Santa Barbara, the opening band was Berlin. They rocked!! I lived in SB at the time, it was a great show, they were all on their game, but I could have done without the 'scat' version of 'Turn to You' (One of the best songs by them!) I understand Belinda does not like the song, but then again, she sang 'I get weak', so she is a bit of a sellout anyway! In any event, I would love to see all the original members playing again, hopefully they will make it to Portland Oregon!

This was an excellent show. They did a good mixture of their songs. They really sounded great and really brought it to their performances. It was nice to be there on Belinda Carlisle birthday and singing happy birthday!

2025 Pokémon World Championships

go go's tour 2022

T he Pokémon World Championships are the pinnacle of competitive Pokémon play. Typically occurring in August of each year, the Pokémon World Championships feature the best Pokémon players from around the globe. Players will compete in the three-day event for a prize pool of over $2,000,000 (the highest prize pool in the Championship Series circuit), the title of Pokémon World Champion, and return invitations for the following year’s Worlds.

The 2025 Pokémon World Championships will be held in August in Anaheim, California. Check back for more information on time and location.

World Championships Qualification

Players qualify for Worlds by earning Championship Points at events throughout the Championship Series season. In 2025, a set number of players from each rating zone, age division, and game will earn an invitation to the World Championships based on their Championship Points leaderboard standings. This update applies to Pokémon TCG, Pokémon video game, and Pokémon GO players.

In addition to the players who qualify via Championship Points, individual top performers at major events will earn direct invitations to the Pokémon World Championships. Competitors who place first at a Regional or Special Championships will receive an invitation, and the Top 4 at each International Championships will earn an invitation. The Top 4 competitors from the prior year’s World Championships will also earn an invitation. Invites earned through this method will not count against the total invitation slots for that player’s rating zone.

Players in Japan, South Korea, mainland China, and the Asia-Pacific region will be awarded World Championships invitations as per their regions’ organized play and esports programs. Players from these rating zones are not eligible to earn World Championships invitations through Championship Points.

What’s the Story (Morning Glory)? Oasis Is Reuniting

Portrait of Justin Curto

Sure, Sally can wait, but you don’t have to anymore — Oasis is going on a reunion tour. “This is it, this is happening,” the Gallagher brothers wrote on social media with a teaser video, sharing their first tour dates in 16 years. The Oasis Live ’25 tour will kick off at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, on July 4, before shows in Manchester, London, Edinburgh, and Dublin, finishing out August 17. And if you want your Britpop across the pond, don’t worry: A press release promises, “Plans are underway for Oasis Live ’25 to go to other continents outside of Europe later next year.” Tickets go on sale August 31 at 9 a.m. in the U.K. and 8 a.m. in Ireland . Don’t look back in anger, just buy ’em!

In the 16 years since Oasis last toured, behind their 2008 album Dig Out Your Soul , Liam and Noel Gallagher have made a habit of attacking each other in the press ( and courts ) while stoking reunion rumors . Those rumors finally came to a head over the weekend with reports before the band hinted at the dates with a social-media teaser. If Charli and Lorde could work it out on the remix, guess Liam and Noel could put aside their differences too. 2025 tour dates below.

JULY 2025 4th - Cardiff, Principality Stadium 5th - Cardiff, Principality Stadium 11th - Manchester, Heaton Park 12th - Manchester, Heaton Park 19th - Manchester, Heaton Park 20th - Manchester, Heaton Park 25th - London, Wembley Stadium 26th - London, Wembley Stadium

AUGUST 2025 2nd - London, Wembley Stadium 3rd - London, Wembley Stadium 8th - Edinburgh, Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium 9th - Edinburgh, Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium 16th - Dublin, Croke Park 17th - Dublin, Croke Park

The Go-Go’s documentary – World Premieres at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival

POLYGRAM ENTERTAINMENT, UNIVERSAL MUSIC PUBLISHING GROUP, FINE POINT FILMS AND FADOO PRODUCTIONS PRESENT :

THE GO-GO’S

A FEATURE DOCUMENTARY FROM DIRECTOR ALISON ELLWOOD

WORLD PREMIERES AT THE 2020 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

LOS ANGELES, CA – December 4, 2019  – This afternoon, the Sundance Film Festival announced the world premiere of The Go-Go’s , a feature documentary about the iconic, groundbreaking band, directed by Alison Ellwood.

Kew Media Distribution will handle worldwide sales.

The Go-Go’s  is fully financed by Polygram Entertainment, the film and television division of Universal Music Group, and presented and produced by Polygram, Universal Music Publishing Group, Fine Point Films and Fadoo Productions. Alison Ellwood ( History of The Eagles, American Jihad ) directs the film with Trevor Birney, Corey Russell and Eimhear O’Neill producing. Polygram Entertainment’s David Blackman and Daniel Inkeles are executive producing; the creative team also includes editor Brett Banks and executive producers Brendan J. Byrne and Kent Sevener. Wally Eltawashy & Arturo Cisneros serve as co-executive producers.

As the first multi-platinum-selling, all-female band to play their own instruments, write their own songs and soar to #1 on the album charts, The Go-Go’s are the most successful female rock band of all time. Rooted in the LA punk scene, Charlotte Caffey (lead guitar, keyboards and vocals), Belinda Carlisle (lead vocals), Gina Schock (drums), Kathy Valentine (bass and vocals) and Jane Wiedlin (guitar & vocals) didn’t PLAY the part of bad girls; they were genuine punk rockers.

The Go-Go’s rose to fame following the release of their 1981 debut album,  Beauty and the Beat , a collection of infectious tracks with huge hooks. Locked at #1 on the  Billboard  charts for six consecutive weeks, Beauty and the Beat was one of the most successful debut albums of all time, featuring the hits Our Lips Are Seal ed (one of  Rolling Stone ’s ‘Top 100 Pop Singles’) and We Got the Beat and resulted in a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The Go-Go’s became a global phenomenon and blazed brand-new trails in music – for women in particular. Their meteoric ascent, however, was marred by band tension and drugs, fueled in part by their rapid rise to fame.

With full access to The Go-Go’s, both past and present, this candid archive-rich documentary assesses the group’s place in music history and examines the personalities and dynamics behind their rise, fall and numerous reincarnations. Until this definitive film, there has never been a serious appraisal of and showcase for The Go-Go’s’ talents or achievements – as musicians, groundbreakers, but even more so, as survivors.

“I’ve always been a huge Go-Go’s fan,” director Alison Ellwood states. “When the band asked me to direct this film, I was thrilled. Like a lot of people, I thought of them as this wonderful, bubbly, all-girl pop band from LA. What I’ve discovered is a much more complex and deeper truth.”

“We lived it and we survived it,” state The Go-Go’s. “Now, looking back on our history through this film, we get to relive our journey as a band:  the fun, the adventure, the highs and the lows. We hope this documentary will show the world that we were pioneers, and how our experience paved the way for many other female (and some male!) musicians.”

“More than ever, this is the perfect time to celebrate the many barriers shattered by The Go-Go’s,” notes David Blackman, Universal Music Group’s head of Film & Television Development and Production. “Their attitude, deceptively smart lyrics and pop rock hooks sound fresher than ever. We’re excited to partner with Alison Ellwood and the entire team to bring The Go-Go’s’ story to Sundance.”

Jonathan Ford, EVP of Sales, Kew Media Distribution says, “We are delighted that The Go-Go’s has been selected to premiere at Sundance.  This special documentary film takes a forthright and honest look at the music scene in the 1980s and shows The Go-Go’s as true pioneers in a male dominated industry.  We are sure this frank retelling of their journey will be of huge interest to audiences around the world.”

NY Times: The Go-Go’s Gave Us the Beat and So Much More

When the Go-Go’s’ debut album came out in 1981, it provided sweet vindication for girls like me. I was a California-born punk-rock pirate marooned at a Midwestern public high school. No one invited smart-alecks to the prom, especially ones who openly mocked the idea of slow dancing to “Stairway to Heaven.” Incapable of meeting beauty standards, I defied them. Patti Smith didn’t shave her armpits, so neither did I. My outsider status was writ large one sunny morning, when I woke up to the message “Punk sucks” spray painted at the end of my parents’ driveway.

Then along came “Beauty and the Beat.” Here were five women from my homeland, in angular haircuts and thrift-store miniskirts, tauntingly singing about their own public shaming — and not giving a toss. They chanted lyrics like protest slogans in the eternal anthem “ Our Lips Are Sealed ”: “Doesn’t matter what they say/In the jealous games people play.” Not only were the Go-Go’s sassy and saucy, they were winning: “Beauty and the Beat” became the No. 1 album on the Billboard chart for six weeks, the first by a female collective who wrote their own music and played their own instruments.

The album remains a new wave masterpiece and a blueprint for girl-powered bands to follow. It defined a moment, of California-style MTV pop feminism, or “Valley Girl Intelligentsia,” as the punk singer Kathleen Hanna later put it. Songs like “We Got the Beat” were built with a timeless durability as solidly constructed as a Motown hit. But to this day, the Go-Go’s music tends to be dismissed as frothy and cute, when in fact, the band was a paradigm shifter. Just check out the cross-dressing role reversals of their 1984 video for “ Turn to You ,” and you’ll understand the rationale for teleporting the Go-Go’s oeuvre — yeah, I said it — to Elizabethan England, in the gender-forward Broadway musical “ Head Over Heels ,” now playing at the Hudson Theater .

go go's tour 2022

What is it about the Go-Go’s that empowers misfits? How did they puncture the blatant sexism of the music industry and claim their own right to unapologetic pleasure? What is the Go-Go’s secret formula?

Three words: They. Kicked. Ass.

The Go-Go’s were firmly rooted in punk. The singer Belinda Carlisle began her music career with a brief stint as Dottie Danger, drummer  for the Germs , the doomed underground band from Los Angeles. In 1978, she, the guitarist Jane Wiedlin and the bassist Margot Olavarria were discussing their recent trip to see the Sex Pistols in San Francisco and decided, in true punk fashion, that they could be a band themselves. They were not the first, or the last, women to find liberation in punk’s do-it-yourself ethos and antiauthoritarian energy — in Los Angeles alone, they had sisters including Alice Bag, Exene Cervenka, Phranc and the Germs bassist Lorna Doom.

But the Go-Go’s used punk as a starting point, not a destination. They weren’t afraid to not only rock but to pop too. Ms. Wiedlin and the guitarist Charlotte Caffey in particular began writing songs that were Brill Building-worthy with their clever lyrics and unabashed hooks. This turn toward a more accessible, less aggressive sound soured Ms. Olavarria, who left and was replaced by Kathy Valentine; the drummer Gina Schock eventually completed the lineup. The producers Richard Gottehrer, a veteran of the girl-group era, and Rob Freeman, who had worked with Blondie (as did Mr. Gottehrer), recognized the classic chassis underneath the band’s dented rust and polished each song until “Beauty and the Beat” became one of those albums where on every listen, a different turn of phrase or guitar lick sticks in your head. Even the band was a bit shocked when they heard how pop the final result sounded. Then the radio adds and MTV play came rolling in.

But the Go-Go’s spirit, their tough, reckless attitude, came across as sharp as ever. As a 17-year-old girl, I related to the way these songs expressed female bonding, youthful insecurity and sexual freedom. “Lust to Love” celebrated a woman’s anti-romanticism: “Love me and I’ll leave you,” the narrator warns her mate. Sure, the hunter winds up captured by the prey, but she is still unrepentant about the game.

Patti Smith, Grace Jones, Debbie Harry and Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson of the B-52’s had shown women ways of being and creating that freed our minds and bodies. But the Go-Go’s taught a new generation, who were too young for the girl groups like the Ronettes and the Crystals, the power of the girl gang. “Tonite” and “This Town” celebrated that feeling of being out of the house, out on the town, aware of your own heat and in charge of your own life.

go go's tour 2022

After all, unlike the Ronettes or the Runaways (who were trailblazers in the 1970s and broke down doors for acts to follow), the Go-Go’s had fuller autonomy. An important factor of the Go-Go’s relatability was that they were clearly singing what they knew. They were also managed by a woman, Ginger Canzoneri, a relative rarity in the music industry of the era.

The Go-Go’s were more than the sum of their parts, but like the best bands, those parts each had their own personalities, so fans could crush hard on — or want to be — a Go-Go of their choosing. I gravitate toward drummers, like Ms. Schock. But then Ms. Wiedlin was the consummate cute weirdo, smart and fun. Watching her bounce around the stage of the Hollywood Bowl in early July, at a Go-Go’s concert, I realized she was the prototype for that indie icon, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl.

The Go-Go’s were not the first or only all-girl rock band, of course. Later, I discovered their predecessors and peers, such as Fanny, the Raincoats and the Slits, all of whom made fantastic, dangerous music but didn’t penetrate my Midwestern bubble. The Go-Go’s, on the other hand, took over the then-nascent MTV along with Joan Jett, and soon, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna. And despite having announced their retirement in 2016, the Go-Go’s are still going. They played three shows at the Bowl (without Ms. Schock) and joined the cast of “Head Over Heels” at the Hudson in New York on July 12. Ms. Wiedlin also has a new band, Elettrodomestico, a duo whose gender-playful videos offer timely, provocative, ear candy. Ms. Carlisle’s 2010  memoir “Lips Unsealed ” will tell you just about everything you want to know about the Go-Go’s, and maybe some things you don’t.

In 1982 my high school hosted a talent show. MTV had busted classic-rock radio’s hold on America, and now everyone wanted to dress weird and be in a band. Musicianship didn’t matter. My friends and I formed an air band that “played” the B-52’s “Strobe Light” on tennis rackets. We were roundly defeated by other poseurs, a guy group who put on wigs and dresses for “Our Lips Are Sealed,” hilariously squeezing their legs shut for the song’s chorus. They could have been mocking these women who had suddenly made new wave mainstream, but I saw their act as being in the spirit of drag: both a tribute to and channeling of female energy — not a put-on, but a putting on.

Me, I’d been pogoing to the Go-Go’s nonstop in my bedroom for months, and I was happy to be joined in this dance that didn’t require an invitation, just a beat.

‘Head Over Heels’ Sets Sights on Broadway, After San Francisco

The Go-Go’s  are going Broadway.

A seemingly improbable musical mash-up of the group’s 20th-century pop songs with a 16th-century prose romance will have a pre-Broadway production in San Francisco next spring, and the producers said Tuesday that they plan to open on Broadway after that.

The musical, a romantic comedy called “ Head Over Heels ,” had an initial production at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2015, where The New York Times  called it  a “funny and frolicsome concoction” but said that the book was stronger than the music. It was further developed in 2016 at Vassar and New York Stage and Film’s Powerhouse Theater.

The show, based on “Arcadia” by Sir Philip Sidney, was conceived by Jeff Whitty, the Tony Award-winning book writer of “Avenue Q.” Mr. Whitty did the original work on the show’s book, which was then adapted by James Magruder. Tom Kitt, who won a Pulitzer Prize and two Tonys for “Next to Normal” and more recently oversaw the pop score for “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical,” has written arrangements.

Among the songs being used: “We Got the Beat,” “Vacation,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Lust to Love” and the show’s title tune.

Michael Mayer, a Tony winner for the original production of “Spring Awakening,” is directing. The lead producers include the actors Gwyneth Paltrow and Donovan Leitch; the other lead producers are Rick Ferrari, Christine Russell, Louise Gund, Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdahy.

“Head Over Heels” is scheduled to run at the Curran Theater in San Francisco from April 24 through May 20 before transferring to Broadway in the 2018-19 season.

Shows using the song catalogs of pop and rock stars have become a Broadway staple. “Escape to Margaritaville,” featuring songs by Jimmy Buffett, is set to open in March, and “The Cher Show” is scheduled to open next fall.

With competition fierce for available theaters, “Head Over Heels” is the ninth show to stake a claim for 2018-19, following “ The Boys in the Band ,” “ The Cher Show ,” “ Gettin’ the Band Back Together ,” “ King Kong ,” “ Pretty Woman ,” “ The Prom ,” “ Straight White Men ” and “ To Kill a Mockingbird .”
