Tasting Notes

Medium golden yellow colour with silver reflections. Fresh peach, ripe gooseberries in the background, a touch of honey and grapefruit zest. Powerful, textured, elegant and precise, fine acidity, salty finish, good length, certain ageing potential.

Emotions de la Tour Blanche

Brand description.

Château La Tour Blanche is ranked as Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification of Sauternes. The estate is the property of regional government of Aquitaine (the French state) and home to the La Tour Blanche School of Viticulture. Although La Tour Blanche represents essential instructive support for the students, the estate is entirely managed independently by professionals from the wine-growing sector to help preserve the expected level of quality for a classified property of Sauternes. Emotions de La Tour Blanche is a second label, the name of which references the various emotions Sauternes evokes.

Location of Vineyard

The estate is in the village of Bommes in the heart of the Sauternes appellation. Château La Tour Blanche sits at the top of a ridge of gravel over clay and limestone subsoil, 60m above sea level. This advantageous position provides the best possible exposure to the sun, optimal drainage, and special flavors to the wine. The soil contributes to the signature finesse and freshness of Château La Tour Blanche, while in autumn, the alternation of morning mists and hot afternoon sun promotes the development of botrytis cinerea , creating a high concentration of flavors and natural sweetness.  

Winemaking Philosophy

Emotions de La Tour Blanche is made from hand-harvested grapes and part of the non-retained must for the “Grand Vin.” The cépage consists mainly of Sémillon, with smaller percentages of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle which are harvested late and selected for botrytis.  Emotions de La Tour Blanche benefits from all the techniques and skills of Château La Tour Blanche, but unlike the “Grand Vin,” which is fermented and aged in oak barrels, Emotions is vinified and aged exclusively in stainless-steel vats for 18 months to preserve its freshness and aromatic character.

La Tour Blanche 2020

Founded in the 18th Century, owner Daniel "Osiris" Iffla left this first growth estate to the French government in 1907 on the condition that a tuition-free school of oenology and viticulture was created there. The 40 hectares of vines are planted with 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. Barrel ageing is in 100% new oak over 16-18 months.

Tasting Notes

This was still on the lees when tasted, but full of super attractive orange zest and saffron flavours, plenty of depth and concentration, as you would expect with the tiny 1.8hl/ha yields. In conversion to organic farming. New oak barrels for the Sémillon, stainless steel vats for Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Drinking Window 2022 - 2042

Full bottle 1,335 g. Undated cask sample. 89% Sémillon, 5.5% Sauvignon, 5.5% Muscadelle. Conversion to organic viticulture. Yield just 1.8 hl/ha!! 'Traditional' vinification with new barrels only for the Sémillon. Sauvignon and Muscadelle are vinified in tank for aromatic freshness. Pale orangey gold. That pear-juice/botrytis nose plus light, interesting cheesiness. Good energy and balance. This has some of that tarte Tatin juice character. Weight but not heaviness. Light smokiness. Impressive. But just look at that yield! 13.5% Drink 2024 – 2040

Pale orange-gold; a quite intense, dried-fruit character suggests a little botrytis on the nose, complex and persistent to smell; moderately rich, fresh, some concentration and an overall attractive, if lighter, Sauternes balance; sweet, a nice gentle complexity, some spice and light length. Clearly some botrytis here, and one of the richer wines for the year, but this, too, is a pleasing aperitif style, and notably limited for the cru.

The yield this year is a miniscule 1.8hl/ha - as such we have been unable to taste the wine En Primeur.
