I noticed that they have phone numbers listed on the p&o website to contact the PD and PS, how does this work ? if you get a call do they transfer it to your cabin or is it just for emergencies. I was just wondering because i will be leaving my 3 yo son at home and i was thinking it might be cheaper for my relatives to contact me on the ship to let me know how he is going rather then me making a call and it costing $7 a minute. It will only be once or twice.

Noooooooooo!!!!!!!! It costs just as much to ring the ship. My girlfriend's husband decided to ring by the time they found her $150 later....

Do you have roaming on your mobile? They could ring you while you are in ports. That is still expensive but more like $2 per minute. There used to be an option to purchase a phonecard onboard and that worked out cheaper. Not sure what the price is and whether it is still available.

We have just been on the Dawn and there were tradesman put in lines right thrrough out the boat, and found out this was to enable passengers to receive and send calls on their mobile phones. So I guess this will also enable anyone to contact the ship directly. Maybe !!:confused:

We used at $20 phone card last year when we were on the Pacific Star ... we got about 10 minutes out of it ... maybe that is the better option, you can of course email too from the ship (and check your email account). And as ADF has said, sms or phone while in port with a roaming mobile would be far cheaper than using the ship phones!:)

Btw, it is usually cheaper to recieve calls than make them on mobiles when overseas. Send them a text and say "I'm here, give me a call". Depending on your provider it might not make much difference. Also remind the Aussiesiders that it won't cost them any more that what it would if you were in Australia. It is the mobile overseas that gets charged. My mum has a problem understanding that if she rings me on her freetime when I am overseas that it isn't going to cost her anything, just me!

Sorry guys I didn't explain this very well. What I meant to say was they were putting wiring through out and was told they would pickup signals through satellites. Therefore mobile phones would be able to be used on board the ship when out to sea..... does that make sence:confused:

Oh good ... we get to hear that lovely ring of mobiles phones at sea now too do we???:):) Always seemed lovely to me that that was one sound that was missing on a cruise!

Shortly after boarding, we headed to Horizon Court and I still had a nice beeping noise switched on for texts. When our roll call buddy texted us to find us, she found us quickly from a nearby table before I responded - as did another 100 glaring eyes in the area.

Other ships also have this mobile@sea service. You might want to check out the prices before you consider this as a real alternative.

We stayed in touch with family (and a few CC regs) via MSN. We told our family what time we would be online, and we were able to communicate by interactive text at 50c per minute via our laptop in the Internet lounge.

If a real emergency occurs, I am more than happy to shell out for the ships phone.

Wow, is that what they were doing? We wondered about that! Of course, it would still depend on the satellite reception though, and judging by the internet speed, that's not all that reliable.

Peter Little – Senior Vice President Guest Experience, P&O

Peter has played a role within the Carnival Australia executive team since 2008. Currently, he holds the position of Interim Leader for P&O Cruises Australia and Carnival Australia. Concurrently, he serves as the Senior Vice President for Guest Experience for P&O Cruises Australia, highlighting his commitment to the business’s overall success.

In his capacity as SVP for Guest Experience, Peter shoulders significant responsibilities encompassing Hotel Operations, Customer Service, Onboard Revenue, Supply Chain, Port Operations, and Travel Services. Additionally, he plays an instrumental role in directing strategic Port Development within the region.

Before taking on his current role, Peter served as the Senior Vice President for Fleet Operations, where he had oversight of shipboard marine and technical functions for the P&O Cruises Australia fleet. Additionally, he was responsible for port and shore operations for the wider group in this region. Prior to relocating to Sydney, Peter held the position of Fleet Technical Manager at sister company Carnival UK in Southampton, effectively managing their Worldwide Fleet.

Peter's professional journey commenced with his training as a Marine Engineer at South Tyneside Maritime College. He began his career at sea on cargo ships, dedicating 17 years to honing his skills and progressing through various ranks from Cadet to Chief Engineer before making a successful transition to the cruise industry in 1991. He furthered his career by moving into shore management in 2004 and has since held various management and executive roles across the Corporation’s global headquarters.
