Riviera Travel Drinks Prices and Packages

Riviera Travel River Cruises offers passengers the option to purchase a drinks package on its river cruises but do you need it? In this guide to Riviera Travel Drinks Prices and Packages , we share the drinks menus with prices and explain what’s included in the drinks packages. These prices are correct as of October 2023.

We were invited to take a cruise on MS George Eliot to experience a Riviera Travel river cruise but all opinions are our own.

What drinks are included on a Riviera Travel river cruise?

The following drinks are included on a Riviera Travel river cruise:

  • Still/sparkling filtered water
  • Hot chocolate
  • Captain’s Welcome and Farewell drinks

There’s a drinks station found onboard all Riviera Travel’s river cruise ships, where you can help yourself to water and hot drinks.

Riviera Travel give all guests a refillable water bottle, which is very useful.

In your cabin there is a kettle with tea, coffee and hot chocolate that is replenished on a daily basis.

Riviera Travel drinks in the cabin

If you choose a cabin on the upper deck, your cabin will have a Nespresso coffee machine and you will receive a bottle of Champagne in your cabin on arrival. This is because guests staying on the upper deck benefit from Riviera Plus.

What is Riviera Plus?

Are drinks with your meal included on a riviera travel river cruise.

Wine, beer, spirits and soft drinks are not included at meal times on a Riviera Travel river cruise.

Some river cruise companies do offer included drinks at lunch and dinner. We’ve experienced this on AmaWaterways and Tui River Cruises .

Riviera Travel does not include drinks at meal times as standard but you can certainly order drinks, which will be charged to your onboard account and paid at the end of your cruise.

Alternatively, you may decide that a drinks package is more cost effective – keep reading to find out what your options are.

Riviera Travel Drinks Prices

Let’s take a look at the drinks menus on a Riviera Travel river cruise. These menus were correct as of October 2023.

Riviera Travel Wine List

A choice of recommended wines is offered during lunch and dinner, these are included with the Standard Drinks Package or purchased by the glass or bottle.

Cocktails and Mocktails of the Day

Every day there is a choice of a daily cocktail and mocktail. These change throughout the cruise.

You can find out what these are in the daily programme and at the entrance to the lounge.

There are four gin and tonics to choose from and if you prefer, it can be served with Fever Tree Tonic for an additional €1,25.

There are two rums on the drinks menu.

Brandy/Cognac List

There is a small choice of fruit brandy on Riviera Travel:

  • Apricot, pear, raspberry – €3,75
  • Grappa – €3,75

Now you’ve seen the individual drinks prices, it hopefully gives you an idea of how much you’re likely to spend on a river cruise.

Riviera Plus passengers will receive one drinks voucher per night to enjoy. This drinks voucher can be used for one drink from the following list:

  • Campari Orange and soda
  • Sparkling wine
  • Warsteiner/Radler beer
  • Non-alcoholic Warsteiner beer
  • House gin and tonic
  • Daily cocktail
  • Mineral water
  • Coca-cola, Sprite

Riviera Travel Drinks Packages

Riviera Travel offers two drinks packages for river cruises:

  • Standard Drinks Package
  • Promotional Superior Drinks Package ( included with all 2024 European river cruises )

It’s worth being aware that the Superior Drinks Package is not available to purchase but is included for guests on all European river cruises throughout 2024 for no addition fee.

The Standard Drinks Package must be paid for the entire cruise and should be added to your booking prior to departure by contacting the reservations team.

All passengers sharing a cabin must have the drinks package, so if one person wants a drinks package the person staying with them in their cabin must also have it.

Riviera Travel Standard Drinks Package

This drinks package is £129pp for a 7-night cruise. The price does vary depending on the number of night of your cruise.

The Riviera Travel Standard Drinks Package includes the following drinks during lunch and dinner:

  • Draught beer
  • Non-alcoholic beer
  • Soft drinks
  • Red, white and rose house wines
  • Wine recommendations from the menu

wine with dinner

Drinks ordered outside of meal times are paid for individually, in addition to the drinks package.

This package is suited to people who enjoy a drink with their meal but are unlikely to drink lots in the evenings.

We think that this drinks package on Riviera Travel is a good price because the wines we had during meal times were very nice. The waiting staff would come round regularly to top up your glass during your meal.

Riviera Travel Superior Drinks Package

The Superior drinks package is available on all European river cruises departing in 2024. You do not need to add this to your booking, it’s automatically included at no additional cost.

The Riviera Travel Superior Drinks Package includes everything in the Standard Drinks Package PLUS drinks from the bar from 6pm to midnight including:

  • Cocktail and mocktail of the day
  • House spirits and mixers (including gin, vodka, rum and whisky)
  • Recommended regional wine during dinner
  • Martini and Sherry pre-dinner
  • Port and Brandy after dinner

You are not limited to a fixed number of drinks from this list, for example, if you want a few different wines and spirits, you can.

If you don’t drink, there are certainly plenty of non-alcoholic options to choose from and you are not paying extra for a drinks package you won’t use. It means that the drinks you do order will be included.

Our thoughts about Riviera Travel drinks

In our opinion, we aren’t heavy drinkers but the addition of the Superior Drinks Package for 2024 means that you will have a more ‘inclusive’ cruise, which we like. We much prefer to have more included in our cruise, with less to pay at the end.

Some river cruise lines include drinks with your meals as part of the cruise cost. This does take away some of the decision-making but we understand that this is not something that everyone wants or needs.

drinks with dinner

The Standard Drinks Package is a reasonable price if you enjoy a drink with dinner.

Riviera Travel drinks prices are comparable to prices you’d pay at home so if you choose to pay for drinks individually, it still isn’t overly expensive.

In this guide to Riviera Travel Drinks Prices and Packages, we share the drinks menus with prices and explain the drinks packages.

Things to Know Before You Cruise

Drink Up On Your River Cruise: Riviera’s Drinks Package Guide

I recently went on a river cruise with Riviera Travel and was faced with the question of whether or not to purchase their drinks package. As someone who enjoys a drink or two on vacation, I wanted to weigh the options and make an informed decision.

After researching and experiencing the package firsthand, I can confidently say that it was worth the cost for me and many other types of travelers.

In this comprehensive guide to Riviera Travel’s drinks package, I will outline what is included, the cost and value, and considerations to keep in mind when deciding whether to opt for it.

Whether you’re someone who enjoys a casual beer or a connoisseur of fine wines, this guide will help you make the best decision for your river cruise experience.

So, let’s raise a glass and dive into Riviera’s drinks package guide!

  • The Riviera Travel drinks package includes wine, beer, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, but does not cover specialty drinks or bar purchases. It is a flat price based on the duration of the cruise and can be pre-booked or purchased on board. Most guests opt for the package as it is good value for heavy drinkers and helps budget ahead of the trip.
  • Bar prices on the cruise are cheap and Riviera Plus guests receive complimentary Prosecco and daily aperitif drinks vouchers. Other river cruises may include additional drinks as part of entertainment or excursions.
  • The drinks package may not be worth it for light drinkers and specific likes and dislikes may not be accommodated. The break-even point is 5 glasses of wine or 3 pints per day on a 5-day cruise. However, it provides a more relaxed atmosphere and top-notch service.
  • Panache Cruises is recommended for booking luxury river cruises. They specialize in luxury river cruises and their expert Cruise Connoisseurs tailor trips to exact requirements. Their motto is ‘Nothing is too much trouble’.

What’s included

So, what’s included in Riviera’s drinks package?

Well, for a flat price based on the duration of your cruise, you can enjoy unlimited wine, beer, and soft drinks during lunch and dinner. The wine selection includes a variety of reds, whites, and rosés from different regions, so you can try something new with each meal.

As for the beer, they offer a selection of local and international brands, including some craft beers. And if you prefer non-alcoholic options, they have a range of soft drinks available, from sodas to fruit juices.

However, it’s important to note that this package doesn’t cover specialty drinks or bar purchases. So if you’re looking for a fancy cocktail or a bottle of champagne, you’ll have to pay extra.

But for those who enjoy wine or beer with their meals, the drinks package is a good value. Plus, it’s a great way to budget ahead of your trip and avoid a huge bar bill at the end of your cruise.

Cost and Value

I find the cost and value of the drinks package to be a crucial consideration when booking a river cruise. While the package is a good value for heavy drinkers and helps budget ahead of the trip, it may not be worth it for light drinkers who prefer specialty drinks or have specific likes and dislikes that may not be accommodated.

To help you weigh the pros and cons of the package, I’ve created a table comparing the cost of the package to the break-even point, which is 5 glasses of wine or 3 pints per day on a 5-day cruise. It’s worth noting that the package is restricted to restaurants and does not include bar purchases or specialty drinks. For those who prefer alternatives to the package, bar prices are cheap and Riviera Plus guests receive complimentary Prosecco and daily aperitif drinks vouchers. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and drinking habits.

Considerations

When considering whether to purchase a drinks package, have you thought about how it can provide a more relaxed atmosphere and help keep your bar bill under control at the end of your trip? If you’re a heavy drinker, the package can be a great value, but it may not be worth it for light drinkers. It’s important to consider your drinking habits before making a decision.

Additionally, the package is restricted to restaurants, so if you plan on spending a lot of time in the bar or enjoying specialty drinks, it may not be the best option for you. However, if you’re looking to budget ahead of your trip and avoid a monstrous bar bill at the end, the drinks package is definitely worth considering.

It’s also important to note that the package doesn’t accommodate specific likes and dislikes, so if you have particular tastes, you may want to opt for individual purchases. Finally, Riviera Travel offers a variety of accommodation options, including Riviera Plus, which includes complimentary Prosecco and daily aperitif drinks vouchers, so be sure to explore all the options before making a decision.

Panache Cruises Recommendation

Panache Cruises comes highly recommended for booking a luxurious river cruise. They offer tailored experiences with their expert Cruise Connoisseurs tailoring trips to your exact requirements. Their motto is "Nothing’s too much trouble,"and this is reflected in the level of service and attention to detail that guests receive.

If you’re looking for luxury options when it comes to river cruises, Panache Cruises should be at the top of your list. They offer a truly personalized experience, ensuring that every aspect of your trip is tailored to your preferences.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a family vacation, Panache Cruises can help you create the perfect itinerary. With their exceptional service and attention to detail, you can be sure that your river cruise will be a truly unforgettable experience.

Are there any restrictions on the amount of drinks that can be consumed with the drinks package?

Yes, there are restrictions on the drinks package, but unlimited consumption is allowed during lunch and dinner. The package only covers wine, beer, and soft drinks. Specialty drinks and bar purchases are not included.

Can specialty drinks or bar purchases be added to the drinks package?

Yes, specialty drinks and bar purchases can be added to the drinks package by customizing it with options. This allows for greater flexibility and the ability to cater to specific preferences.

Is the drinks package available on all Riviera Travel river cruises?

Unlock the freedom to indulge with Riviera Travel’s Drinks Package, available on select river cruises. Enjoy unlimited wine, beer, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner for a flat price based on cruise duration. Purchase in advance or onboard.

What are the options for non-heavy drinkers who don’t want to purchase the drinks package?

As a non-heavy drinker, I can opt to purchase drinks a la carte, enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, and water, or try the mocktail options. Customizable packages are available for those who want to personalize their drinks selection.

Are there any additional benefits for Riviera Plus guests other than the complimentary Prosecco and daily aperitif drinks vouchers?

Did you know that Riviera Plus guests get exclusive access to a range of drink options? These include premium spirits, cocktails, and wines. It’s a great perk to consider when booking your luxury river cruise.

Riviera Travel Announces Free Drinks Package for Winter 2024

Riviera Travel has added a free 'Superior' drinks package to all its 2024 European river cruises

5 June 2023 Riviera Travel has added a free ‘Superior’ drinks package to all its 2024 European river cruises. It is the first ever time the line has made a complimentary drinks offer available across an entire season. Applied to all new and existing bookings for 2024 European river cruises, the package allows guests to enjoy unlimited drinks from a selection of house wines, draught beer and soft beverages over lunch. Then each evening from 6pm until midnight, guests have access to all this plus the addition of a cocktail of the day, house spirits and mixers, selected aperitifs and digestifs and a recommended regional wine with dinner. Prior to introducing the offer, Riviera conducted a comprehensive research campaign with customers to present a range of drinks package options, with differing inclusions. The ‘Superior’, worth £400pp per week, proved the most popular. The package applies to over 300 departures, across 13 different itineraries, ranging from four to 14 nights. Seven of the departures are dedicated to solo travellers. Riviera’s river cruises cover the main European waterways including the Seine, Rhone, Rhine, Douro and Danube. All 2024 departures include the Superior drinks package; return flights with regional airport options available at no additional cost; Eurostar travel on select itineraries; full board; and scheduled visits and tours. Excursions are available every day, while sailings also include on-board lectures, port talks, entertainment and authentic regional menus. Riviera river cruises departing in July and August 2023 have an ‘enhanced’ drinks package available free-of-charge. It is available 10am-12pm daily in the bar and restaurant, and comprises unlimited soft drinks, house wines and draft beer, plus a regional wine option with dinner. Robin Shaw, Chief Commercial Officer at Riviera Travel, said: “Riviera Travel river cruises already offer superb value for money, and with this wide-ranging choice of free drinks available on all of our 2024 European cruises, our guests can get even more from their budget. “Having seen a great response to our offer of an included drinks package on summer river cruises in 2023, we’ve made the decision to introduce this new Superior drinks package as a standard inclusion on all sailings next year. It proved by far the most popular customer choice in the research we conducted and provides a more comprehensive offering than most other river cruise lines, so we’re very confident this inclusion will be well-received. “Now is the perfect time to start planning next year’s holiday on the water. Guests can sit back and take in some of the world’s most scenic waterways, safe in the knowledge the drinks they enjoy over a meal, at the on-board bar or while relaxing on the top deck are all taken care of.” For more information, visit  rivieratravel.co.uk  or call 01283 523431.

Riviera Travel: Free Premium Drinks Package Worth £182pp

  • By Diana A.
  • Thu, 4/01/2024

Riviera Travel has announced that all bookings for its new-for-2024 Athens & Greek Islands cruise-and-stay holiday will receive a free premium drinks package worth £182pp on select departures.

The limited-time offer is available on five dates between April and October 2024, and is applicable on bookings made before February 29, 2024.

The 10-night itinerary comprises a seven-night sailing across the Aegean Sea, coupled with hotel stays for one night in Athens pre-cruise, and two nights post-cruise at a beachside resort hotel.

The drinks package has over 100 options and includes cocktails, wines, beers, soft drinks and coffees. The offer applies to the following departures:

  • September 13

The sailing is on the newly-refurbished 1260-guest Celestyal Journey, which launched in September this year, and will feature guided tours of Kusadasi, Crete, Santorini and Mykonos, and visits to Thessaloniki and Milos.

The ship itself has 630 cabins and boasts seven restaurants, eight bars, a sundeck, outdoor pool, spa, gym and show lounge.

The pre- and post-cruise stays include tours of the Acropolis, Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon.

Prices start from £2499pp.

Will Sarson, Head of Product at Riviera Travel, said: “This new cruise-and-stay itinerary allows guests to discover the history and beauty of the Greek Islands in one fascinating trip.

“With so much included in our holidays as standard it offers outstanding value for money, and with the bonus of a free premium drinks package, means this is the ideal time to book.”

What to wear, tipping policy & inclusions – everything you need to know about Riviera Travel

Author: Lucy Abbott

Published on: 04 April 2022

Updated on: 27 October 2022

Riviera Travel offers thoughtful, crafted itineraries, peppered with authentic experiences benefiting from the knowledge of local experts.

Riviera Travel is a well-known cruising name, so we don’t blame you if you don’t want to become an expert.

Luckily for you, you have stumbled upon the ultimate guide to Riviera Travel – so all those niggling questions about what to pack, whether you need to tip and what’s actually included can be answered here.

Not only does Riviera offer a stunning selection of river cruises, but the line also offers ocean and yacht cruising opportunities so you can explore every part of the world.

So read on to discover everything you need to know about Riviera Travel…

Riviera Travel boosts 2026 tall-ship programme

Competition: win a seven night european river cruise for two, riviera travel waives single supplement on select 2024 yacht sailings, riviera travel unveils new 2024 themed river cruises, new issue out now, riviera travel removes single supplements on rhine and rhone itineraries, riviera travel celebrates 40 years, riviera travel to launch two new ships in 2025, susan calman boosts riviera’s douro bookings by 54 per cent, riviera travel to appear in ‘cruising with susan calman’, riviera travel ships.

Riviera boasts 11 five-star European river cruise ships that are primarily Swiss-built and operated. For worldwide river cruise ships, Riviera uses MV Mekong Prestige on the Mekong and for Nile cruises, there’s MS Darakum.

Five luxurious yachts whisk you away to the jewels of the Dalmatian Coast and if you fancy an intimate cruising atmosphere then opt for one of Riviera’s three smaller ships. MV Yasawa Princess, for example, only holds 56 passengers.

Royal Clipper is Riviera’s answer to a tall ship, with capacity for 222 passengers and featuring a wind-driven hull through the tall sails.

Riviera also has an expedition cruise ship, MV Ocean Atlantic, newly renovated in 2016 with high manoeuvrability and strong engines.

Where do cruise ships dock?

The beauty of river cruising is that you can dock right in the centre of countless interesting cities, but when it comes to ocean cruising you may wonder where Riviera cruise ships actually dock – let’s take a look at five busy cruise ports…

Croatia’s cruise port is the Port of Gruz, located two miles from the Old City – and is the second-largest port in the country.

Dubrovnik is a similar distance away from its cruise terminal at around 3km distance from the Old Town – or a €13 taxi.

What to wear on a Riviera Travel river cruise ship?

Make the most of an informal cruise style and ditch the ballgowns – instead, pack something comfortable and casual.

For daytime summer wear, ensure you have a pair of comfortable walking shoes and loose-fitting clothes that you feel comfortable in – especially in the heat.

Perhaps choose a pair of your trusty jeans and a cap-sleeved top for your cruise excursions around an idyllic village or various historic monuments.

- READ MORE: Riviera Travel reveals 2023 European river cruise programme -

In the evening, the casual theme continues, but of course, if you want to dress up you are more than welcome to wear a flattering cocktail dress or a blazer. Typically, guests will be dressed in open-necked shirts or a sparkly top with a pashmina on hand for ventures up to the top deck.

Autumn or winter river cruises, of course, call for different attire. Layers are super important for keeping warm (or stripping back if you get too hot) so make sure you have plenty of tops, jumpers, hats, scarfs, gloves packed as well as a waterproof jacket.

What’s included in a Riviera Travel river cruise?

Luckily for Brits, tea and coffee are included onboard, courtesy of Riviera Travel , with a handy machine in communal areas as well as facilities in your room.

Other drinks can be enjoyed as part of a drinks package, where the prices differ depending on the length of the cruise.

The drinks package includes draught beer, non-alcoholic beer, soft drinks, red, white and rosé house wines with lunch and dinner – just don’t drink it all at once!

Excursions are included with Riviera, so you can craft your cruise specifically to your wants and needs via the wide range of optional excursions available.

Are gratuities included with Riviera Travel?

Although gratuities are not included with Riviera Travel, tips are not charged at a set amount and are entirely at your discretion.

Riviera Travel offers a rough guideline of around €8 to €12 per person per day – an envelope is provided in your cabin on the last night for you to drop off in reception if you wish.

- READ MORE: Discover s tunning spring river cruises with Riviera Travel -

Tips are divided equally among the crew so if you do choose to tip, you can be sure that everyone who made your journey such a pleasure will benefit.

Alternatively, if you want to give your gratuity directly to your cruise director and concierge, then you can – the choice is yours.

Riviera Travel Rhône cruises

Riviera is known for its comprehensive Rhône river cruises on which you can wind your way through France. Measuring 813km, the river encompasses all the beauty of the French countryside and eclectic cities such as Lyon.

Riviera offers one crafted itinerary down the Rhône – Burgundy, the River Rhône & Provence River Cruise onboard the stunning MS William Shakespeare or MS Lord Bryon. Both ships hold only 140 people and boast sustainably sourced tropical hardwoods, luxurious deep armchairs and more – lucky you.

A cruise down the Rhône is perfect for both seasoned travellers and those new to cruise. Explore key ports such as Avignon, Beaune and Arles, all home to an array of interesting sights.

Admire the beauty of the Provençal city, Arles, which is famously known to have inspired around 300 of Van Gogh’s works, or wander down the iconic half-bridge, standing over 48 metres high, in Avignon Pont du Gard. Fun fact: the Pont Du Gard was actually built without using mortar as the stones were perfectly cut to fit together instead.

The gorgeous views are not restricted to off-board. Riviera sails through one of France’s most picturesque landscapes to admire on deck – the Ardèche Gorges. Admire the power of mother nature with staggering limestones cliffs that fall into the peaceful waters of the river framed by impressive rock formations.

You can also embark on cruise excursions with Riviera, from wine tasting in Beaune to guided tours about the depth of history behind Avignon’s Pont du Gard.

Holiday with the reassurance of the satisfaction guarantee – this means that if you somehow aren’t pleased with your cruising experience, Riviera will bring you home at no extra cost and offer you a full refund – result.

Riviera Travel Seine river cruise

The iconic city of Paris awaits you on a Seine river cruise. This highlight is boosted by your further explorations of the lush countryside in Northern France.

The Seine is the second-longest river in France after the Loire at 777km long so as you start your Seine river cruise in Paris, enjoy the weeklong journey travelling to the coast and stopping off at intriguing ports along the way.

Onboard MS Jane Austen, you can relax as you glide alongside peaceful waters and take advantage of the personalised 4:1 ratio service.

Hit all the Parisian hotspots, starting with the Eiffel Tower before going onto the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Elysees, Musée d’Orsay, the Louvre, Place de la Concorde and the Tuileries Gardens.

Rouen is a hotspot where you can wander around the cobbled streets to explore antique shops and quaint clothing boutiques. Admire the Notre-Dame cathedral that rises above the surrounding buildings at 151 metres – the tallest in France.

- READ MORE: How to cruise the River Seine like a pro -

Get your cameras out for Honfleur – this picturesque paradise boasts over 1,000 years of history and offers countless spots of history and culture. The town is known for its old port that was key in the Middle Ages as well as its strong ties with artists such as Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet.

What’s better, you can enjoy a total of nine visits and tours, including guided tours of Rouen, Honfleur and Paris as well as excursions to Monet’s iconic house and the Bayeux Tapestry.

With all Riviera Travel cruises, if you don’t fancy flying you have the option to travel by Eurostar so you can enjoy the picturesque views out of the window.

Solo travellers aren’t left out of the equation as Riviera has implemented a no single supplement on selected 2022 dates with the addition of extra solo cabins to accommodate singletons.

Luckily for you, 2022 and 2023 are on sale now so if you’re feeling inspired then check them out!

Riviera Travel Danube river cruise

The Danube is a great river cruise destination, offering up a range of music, history and beautiful river banks.

Flowing through four national capital cities, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade, the Danube stretches across 1,785 miles.

Music lovers will enjoy sailing through the very waters that inspired the genius that is Johann Strauss's waltz and lullaby. Other famous musicians also stemmed from places dotted along this river, such as Mozart in Salzburg as well as Beethoven in Brahms.

Explore one of Hungary's oldest towns, Esztergom, where you can admire impressive architecture such as the neoclassical basilica.

Another port of call you can look forward to is Vienna, also known as the city of culture. Hit the main spots such as Saint Stephen's Cathedral and the Gothic South Tower that both make up the skyline.

If you want to delve deeper into Vienna, Budapest or Prague then you can with Riviera's Tour Extension options.

With a range of three and four-night extensions, you can truly personalise your cruise experience.

Riviera Travel Rhine river cruise

Riviera Travel Rhine river cruise is an all-encompassing experience that travels 766 miles from the Swiss Alps all the way to Rotterdam.

You will be able to dive into six different countries headfirst via the Rhine - such as Amsterdam, Bruges, Arnhem and Cologne - lucky you.

It comes as no surprise that the Rhine River is one of the most popular in the world. While the Danube beats out the Rhine in terms of length, the Rhine features a diverse landscape for its length.

Basel is a fascinating port to visit and despite it being classed as Switzerland it fuses French and German influences in its architecture and history.

Koblenz is a magical city, even more so at Christmas time. At 2,000 years old, Koblenz boasts being part of the UNESCO World Heritage with it's Upper Middle Rhine Valley as well as the stunning traditional Christmas markets during the festive season - we can't think of a better way to get into the Christmas spirit!

Route map

Andernach & Koblenz

Awake in the delightful town of Andernach, nestling behind sturdy medieval walls.

One of the oldest towns in Germany, it was founded by the Romans in 12BC on the site of an old Celtic settlement then seized by the Franks in 450 AD who set up a royal court within its old fort walls. By medieval times, the town had grown in stature and was trading with places as far away as England and Scandinavia – even having its own mint and coinage. Andernach and the surrounding area is well known for its pumice with production booming since the 1950s. Enjoy free time to wander around its picturesque streets and admire the town’s mighty defensive walls, gates and towers, the finest of which is the 56-metre tall Round Tower. See the impressive, ruined castle with its well-preserved keep, and the majestic cathedral with its four soaring towers, fine interior and unusual wall decorations. At the old harbour area discover the Old Crane, a 16th-century stone-turning tower crane, still in use until 1911 to load millstones, tuff and wine.

Over lunch, we set sail, arriving before long at the magnificent city of Koblenz, sited at the confluence of two of Europe’s great rivers – the Rhine and Moselle. An expert local guide will take us on an insightful tour to learn more about this 2,000-year-old city. Discover its historic squares, beautifully restored buildings and cosy little cafes with the aroma of fresh coffee and pastries tempting you inside. Over tonight’s splendid four-course meal our ship gracefully sails on along the Moselle’s gently winding course.

Included experiences:

Visit to Andernach & guided tour of Koblenz.

Koblenz, Germany

Cruise along the Moselle

After breakfast head up onto the magnificent sun deck to enjoy some fabulous river views during a morning of scenic sailing through this magical natural landscape, with gentle forested hills sweeping down to the rippling water’s edge.

After lunch on board, explore the medieval town of Bernkastel, a huddle of pointy roofs and spires, tall timber framed treasures and intriguing alleys hiding a host of wineries and cosy taverns. Stroll the cobbled lanes, pausing to admire the famous Pointed House, the perfect example of a Moselle vintner’s traditional dwelling, its ancient timber frame bedecked with colourful window boxes. Look out for the Graacher Tor, the last remaining gate dating from 1300 ow housing a local history museum or if you’re feeling energetic, take a walk up to the old castle for amazing views.

The Moselle is of course synonymous with wine production. One of thirteen wine growing regions in Germany it is the third largest yet most famous wine producing area. Mainly cultivating grapes for white wines, the Rieslings crafted from the Moselle’s vineyards are considered some of the finest in the world. Enjoy a visit to a local cellar to learn more about this ancient process, followed by a wine-tasting of some of their best produce.

Return to the ship for dinner and perhaps end the evening with a nightcap in the bar to the soothing tones of the on-board pianist as we sail overnight to Trier.

Visit to Bernkastel and local cellar with wine-tasting.

Bernkastel, Germany

Trier & Luxembourg

This morning we drive from Trier through this famously scenic region to Luxembourg. Small but beautifully formed, just under 1,000 square miles in size, this diminutive country boasts fine castles, medieval fortifications and beautifully preserved little towns. We arrive in the capital bearing the same name, located amidst the deep gorges cut by the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers where a local guide will impart their knowledge of this interesting city. Discover sights including the fine cathedral, charming old town and grand squares lined with fine public buildings. The city is also famed for its extraordinary UNESCO Bock Casemates, a defensive subterranean tunnel network, initially carved in the 17th century under Spanish rule, and subsequently extended. There’ll be some free time to explore under your own steam so why not head for the beautiful Place d’Armes, fringed by the impressive facades of the city’s palace, as well as buzzing bars and restaurants and shady lime trees.

Return to the ship for lunch, before disembarking to discover the treasures of Germany’s oldest city. Trier, founded by the Romans, was the capital of much of their empire, encompassing present-day Spain, France, Britain and parts of Germany. The city had a population of 80,000 people – enormous for ancient times – and Emperor Constantine lived here. It boasts a wealth of intact Roman monuments, including an amphitheatre, baths and bridge – the most impressive being the Porta Nigra, a fortified gate made of huge stone blocks that towers above the medieval rooftops. This is the largest and best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps, and testimony to the Romans’ architectural genius. Discover Trier’s Roman heritage, together with its impressive cathedral, the oldest bishop’s church in Germany through the expert eyes of our local guide before some free time for you to explore on your own. After tonight’s dinner we set sail towards Cochem.

Scenic drive to Luxembourg and guided tour of Luxembourg City & guided tour of Trier.

Alzette river, Luxembourg

Cruise towards Cochem

A morning of scenic cruising awaits, so catch up on a spot of reading in the ship’s library, book yourself in for a little pampering in the spa, or simply enjoy the views from the sun deck. Approaching Cochem we pass through an impressive series of locks – so head up on deck to watch this fascinating system in operation. This is the very heart of the Moselle wine trade and all around you’ll note steep, tree-crested slopes covered in a patchwork of tidy vineyards, crisscrossed by narrow tracks and winding roads allowing access to the vines; these are some of the steepest vineyards in the world!

During lunch, we arrive in Cochem, the traditional wine trade centre. Perched high above the town is a splendid multi-turreted castle, its many spires puncturing the sky above the velvet green backdrop of thick forest and regimented vines. Enjoy a guided tour before free time to explore under your own steam. Laid back and charming, it’s a delight wandering Cochem’s streets, enjoying the fairytale backdrop of pastel-coloured houses, quirky shops and inviting wine cellars. Visit the Reichsburg, an imperial castle surveying the town below, to explore the sumptuous dining and hunting rooms and step back in time as you wander through the Knights’ Hall imagining the feasts that once took place here. The structure you see today was built in the 1868 on the site of a 12th-century castle which served to collect tolls from passing ships. The views from the castle grounds are spectacular and well worth the walk.

Return to our ship where the chef presents tonight’s delicious menu. As evening falls our ship slips away from port and our adventure continues.

Rhine Gorge & Rüdesheim

Rhine Gorge

There’s a bucket-list treat in store this morning as we cruise through the world-famous Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and area of outstanding natural beauty. As the river twists and turns, encased by sheer valley sides, make sure you’re up on deck to experience these incredible views close up. Ruins of ancient castles teeter on the valley slopes, built by wealthy princes eager to display their power and influence and to extort tolls from passing river traffic. Legends abound here, most famously of the Lorelei - murmuring rock – where enchanting maidens lured unsuspecting sailors to watery graves. Look out for birds of prey floating above as we cruise on passing quaint villages – Saint Goar, Bacharach and Kaub – all famed for their wine production.

At lunchtime we arrive in Rüdesheim. A tangle of crooked houses, winding cobbled alleys and curious little shops, this pretty town is famous for its wine making. This afternoon we’ll board the Winzerexpress road train for a tour of the sights and the surrounding vineyards, enjoying some superb views of the town and river below. Later join an optional visit to Siegfried’s Mechanical Museum located in the turreted Brömserhof, a collection of around 350 intricate, antique instruments and musical boxes from around the world, many still in working order, evoking the sounds of yesteryear with their delicate melodies. Alternatively, explore on your own to discover a delightful marketplace lined with pastel facades and cosy taverns at Rüdesheim’s heart, overlooked by Brömserburg Castle. As you wander the maze of streets, don’t miss the impressive Klunkhardshof, one of the town’s finest 15th-century homes with its traditional timber frame and gabled roof.

Back on board there's a chance to sample some of Germany's legendary beers and learn more about its history and production. After dinner, reconvene in the bar for a digestif or perhaps a coffee with a shot of locally produced Asbach brandy as we set sail once more.

Cruise through the Rhine Gorge, visit to Rüdesheim with Winzerexpress tour & on-board German beer experience.

Rüdesheim, Germany

Worms & Speyer

Wake this morning in the ancient city of Worms, its skyline dominated by the four, tiered towers and huge domes of the magnificent Romanesque cathedral. The Romans settled here as early as 14BC, and as you wander with our local guide, you’ll find relics of its fascinating past scattered across the old town, from impressive churches, ruins of the city’s fortifications and a Jewish cemetery. We’ll visit Worms’ centrepiece, the 12th-century cathedral, to admire its beautiful colonnaded interior and lovely chapel. Whilst much of its stained glass was replaced after a nearby explosion, you cannot fail to marvel at the intricate Gothic reliefs and the gilded high altar. Over lunch on board we sail on to Mannheim.

Speyer or Mannheim

This afternoon there’s the option to join our visit to Speyer. Founded by the Celts, this historic city is celebrated for its illustrious past. You’ll have free time here to discover some of its many sights including the Imperial Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and amongst the largest and finest Romanesque cathedrals in the world. Visit the beautiful four-roomed crypt, resting place of many Holy Roman Emperors and German kings. Another landmark is the magnificent neo-Gothic Gedächtniskirche; built at the turn of the 20th century, it commemorates the 1529 ‘Protestation at Speyer’ during which supporters of Martin Luther protested his imperial ban, with these religious followers subsequently known as ‘Protestants.’

Alternatively, stay to explore Mannheim, an innovative city with a world-famous reputation – the automobile, bicycle and tractor were all invented here. Visit the impressive baroque palace, Germany’s largest, to wander its splendid staterooms and palace church, or take in its trio of museums with superb collections from art and antiquities to photography and music history. Stroll to the sixty-metre-high Water Tower dating from 1886, set amongst cascading fountains and neatly tended flower gardens – you’ll understand why it was once known as ‘Little Paris’.

We moor in Mannheim overnight. After dinner join our skilled and soulful singer in the lounge on a journey back to the early decades of the last century, accompanied by a pianist.

Guided tour of Worms, visit to Speyer & onboard musical performance.

St Peter's Cathedral - Worms, Germany

Heidelberg or Schwetzingen & Rhine Gorge

Heidelberg or Schwetzingen

This morning you have a choice of activities, the first a visit to the refined city of Heidelberg. An architectural treasure, escaping damage during the Second World War, this beautifully preserved city straddles the banks of the river Neckar, against an idyllic backdrop of thickly forested slopes. An imposing castle stands guard over its romantic Altstadt – old town – a huddle of gabled terracotta roofs and pointy spires. Its 14th-century university is one of Europe’s most prestigious, and reminiscent of its ‘twin’ – Cambridge. During the 19th century it was the centre of Germany’s Romantic Movement, on the route of the Grand Tour and visited by many artists including JMW Turner who captured its splendours for eternity. On our guided walking tour you’ll discover the main attractions, including the magical stone bridge with its twin white towers and there’ll also be some free time to explore yourself.

Alternatively, visit Schwetzingen Palace to enjoy a tour of its superb grounds. Built on the site of a former castle, dating back to 1350, the palace reached the height of its splendour under the Prince Elector Carl Theodor during the 18th century, who instructed the most notable landscape gardeners of the time to create the exquisite gardens, the design of which survives today. A baroque masterpiece, stroll the painstakingly tended paths and leafy avenues, admiring the vibrant blooms from far and wide and a host of eye-catching sculptures. An assortment of whimsical buildings – a small Temple of Apollo, a Bathhouse in the style of an Italian villa and the Turkish Garden’s Mosque with its intricate oriental decoration - lend an exotic touch. The 18th-century English-style park is one of the earliest of its kind in Germany and it’s a joy to amble around the lake, with the many tree species mirrored in its tranquil water.

Cruise towards Niederlahnstein passing the Rhine Gorge

Return to the ship for lunch, then enjoy the ship’s excellent facilities during our scenic afternoon’s cruising towards Niederlahnstein. After tonight’s dinner we cruise through the iconic Rhine Gorge once more as evening falls, arriving in Niederlahnstein later tonight.

Guided tour of Heidelberg or visit to Schwetzingen Palace with guided tour of gardens.

Alte Brücke bridge - Heidelberg, Germany

Niederlahnstein

Niederlahnstein & Marksburg

We'll visit superbly preserved Marksburg castle in nearby Braubach. Dating from the 13th century and as one of the only castles on the Rhine to fully escape war damage, it well-deserves its UNESCO status. On a guided tour learn about life here through the ages as you wander through the impressive Gothic Hall, armoury and kitchen. Take in the expansive views stretching for miles over the river and valley below – you can see exactly why the castle was so well sited to view oncoming enemies.

Cruise towards Bonn

Return to the ship for lunch after which we set sail for Bonn, so relax on board for the afternoon, enjoying the views from a comfortable chair or sun lounger. Freshen up for dinner then reconvene for an aperitif in the lounge to watch our arrival in the vibrant city of Bonn. Tonight enjoy a truly memorable occasion – the ‘Chef’s Dinner’, when the chef prepares his superb ‘signature’ dishes for you to enjoy in the splendid surroundings of the ship’s restaurant.

Guided tour of Marksburg Castle.

Marksburg, Germany

Bonn & Cologne

This morning enjoy free time to explore Bonn at your own pace. This historic city served as the capital of the West German state from 1949-1990 until the reunification of Germany which restored Berlin as the country’s capital. Whilst it lost the battle to retain the parliament, Bonn still holds the status of a secondary governmental seat, so many government ministries and public bodies still have their headquarters here. But behind its official façade lies a historic and fascinating city which you’ll discover as you wander its old town, centred around two grand squares fringed by the pastel pink town hall with its gleaming gilding. The soaring spire of the imposing Romanesque church is the city’s landmark, and the great classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven was also born here. You can visit his home – now a museum detailing the life and work of this musical genius, one of the greatest composers of all time.

As lunch is served on board, we set sail once more and it’s not long until Cologne’s skyline appears on the horizon. Head up on deck to watch our final approach into this most majestic of cities. The cathedral’s famous spires tower above the old town’s maze of cobbled streets, where our expert guide will bring the city’s fascinating history to life. Visit the cathedral, the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, miraculous survivor of Second World War bombing and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took six centuries to complete this iconic masterpiece and among its many treasures are the magnificent stained-glass windows and gilded sarcophagus said to contain the remains of the three kings from the Nativity story. Explore the vibrant old town, beautifully restored and boasting an abundance of excellent shopping and cosy bars, some of which still brew their own beer.

After some free time, we’ll return to the ship for our final dinner. Afterwards retire to the lounge to enjoy professional musicians from leading symphony orchestras demonstrating perfect mastery of their instruments, showcasing melodies from the most famous European composers with a special focus on Beethoven, who was born in Bonn - a splendid finale to this memorable holiday.

Visit to Bonn, guided tour of Cologne & Classical duo musical performance.
