The Details:

If you are planning a tour around astronomy viewing, it is best conducted around the time of the “New Moon” each month. This is from 3 days after the full moon to 3 days after the New Moon. This is for the dark skies this gives, allowing faint Galaxies and Nebula to be seen. Tours are conducted with 8″ – 10″ or 12″ reflecting telescopes typically, but we may be able to customise this for specialist tours for Astrophotography or Very Large Aperture viewing upon request (additional cost).

” Thank you so much for the tour you gave us in Mareeba. It was an amazing experience for me because I have never seen the stars like this in my life. Also can‘t thank enough for the support your friend Carlton gave me with my camera to find the right settings and focus for taking my first pictures of stars! Thanks to that, they came out pretty well! The dinner and sitting by the fire afterwards was also nice as it was getting colder.I can highly recommend this tour to everyone interested in astronomy and photography. It is an unforgettable experience ! “

Tour Type:   Day Trip | Operates:   Daily | Departs:   8:00am | Returns:   4:30pm | Transfers: No

Highlights:.

Seastar visits Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef, providing quality day tours for guests wanting to snorkel and dive (see tabs below for more information on these activities) on Cairns’ Great Barrier Reef. Seastar limits its day tour numbers to just 35 people and prides itself on customer service. Dividing its day in half, Seastar provides guests with 2.5 hours at each reef destination and includes guided snorkel tours (at both locations) as standard.

The modern Seastar vessel departs Cairns around 8am and with a travelling time of just over 1 hour, is the first to arrive at Michaelmas Cay. Guests can dive or snorkel direct from the boat, or take the complimentary tender transfer over to this pristine sand cay. Morning over, Seastar packs up and moves to its Hastings Reef outer reef location: for guests, Hastings Reef offers a completely different experience to Michaelmas Cay. You can expect coral walls and gardens, caves and swim throughs. Glass bottom boat tours are offered here, as is another guided snorkel tour.

Enjoy up to 5 hours at 2 reef locations with all snorkelling equipment and two (2) guided snorkel tours included in the tour price. Other standard tour inclusions: wetsuit or lycra suit, buoyancy vest, swimming noodle, a reef interpretation presentation, 30-minute glass bottom boat tour and Michaelmas Cay circumnavigation for bird observation tours. Morning and afternoon tea is included, as is a hot and cold buffet lunch. Seastar has Ecotourism Accreditation through Ecotourism Australia.

All prices in Australian Dollars. Can't see the prices on your mobile? Click the Green Circle with the + Sign.

Seastar check-in is at the boat from 7.30am, which is moored at E-Finger at Cairns’ Marlin Marina, adjacent to the Reef Fleet Terminal. Departure is scheduled for 8am. Complimentary morning tea and coffee is served on board and trip briefings are provided by the crew, on your way to your first destination, Michaelmas Cay.

Travel time is approximately 1-hour, getting you to Michaelmas Cay around 9am. With 2.5 hours to snorkel, dive and explore – either from the boat or the cay itself – there’s plenty of time to check out the seabirds and the clam beds surrounding the cay. Lunch is served on board the boat and the afternoon is spent exploring Hastings Reef, with the option of a complimentary glass bottom boat tour. Seastar arrives back into Cairns around 4.30pm.

Seastar offers introductory (no experience necessary) and certified diving, at both Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef. All diving is guided by experienced Dive Masters and this is included in the dive price, which is extra to the standard tour cost. There is the option to do two (2) dives, one at each location. Please note: all divers will be required to complete a medical questionnaire on board, prior to diving. All equipment required is included in the dive price.

INTRODUCTORY DIVES: Seastar offers you the chance to try scuba diving for the very first time, with an introductory dive. No experience is necessary and all equipment and training is provided. Michaelmas Cay provides the perfect playground for first-time divers, as the shallow waters are both protected and full of colourful marine life. You must be at least 12 years of age to participate in an introductory dive and you will need to complete a dive medical questionnaire on board the boat. There is the option to take one (1) or two (2) introductory dives on this trip.

CERTIFIED DIVING: Seastar offers certified divers the chance to take two (2) dives: one at Michaelmas Cay and one at Hastings Reef. At Michaelmas Cay, confident certified divers will enjoy the ‘3 Sisters’ site, which sits in 18m of water and boasts an amazing array of coral formations and marine life. If you’ve been out of the water for a while, then diving closer to the cay itself will provide a comfortable reintroduction to scuba. This alternative site has a maximum depth of just 5m and descent is straight from the boat, with mooring lines to follow down. The second dive of the day is at Hastings Reef at the ‘Fish Bowl’, a great outer reef location teeming with marine life. All dives are guided and maximum depth for the day will be 18m. There is no reverse profile diving, so if you choose the cay option as your first dive, then you will be staying shallow at Hastings Reef. You will be required to show your Divers License and complete Dive Medical paperwork on board, prior to diving.? Equipment and dive site briefings are all provided on board the boat.

Snorkeling:

Snorkelling conditions around Michaelmas Cay are excellent. There are large beds of simply massive giant clams to see, as well as many schools of fish, sea cucumbers and more. The waters are relatively shallow and protected from strong currents. Snorkel from the beach (tender transfer provided) or the Seastar vessel itself. Snorkelling at Hastings Reef is completely different. With deeper water, there is the potential for some surface current (pending tides), the corals are a little further away but offer amazing diversity in type and colours.

Seastar includes all snorkelling equipment in the tour price (mask, snorkel and fins) as well as wetsuit or lycra suit (pending season) and buoyancy devices (vests and noddles), if required. Two (2) guided snorkel tours – one at each location (Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef) – are included, or you can self-snorkel and explore the colourful corals.

Outer Great Barrier Reef

Where we go: michaelmas cay.

Located 22 nautical miles (40 km) from Cairns; Michaelmas Cay is the largest of the uninhabited coral cays in the Cairns region.

Seastar is the first vessel to arrive at Michaelmas Cay. Only 2 tour companies currently are permitted to acces this Cay.

Being a large cay, it can sustain a permanent low grassy area the size of 2 football fields. This is approximately 3½ metres high (11’ 6”). It is home to 35 different species of sea birds. Bird watching

Michaelmas Cay

Unlike other cays, it is always above water no matter how high the tide..

Michaelmas Cay is on the western tip of Michaelmas Reef. This mid-shelf reef was formed by living coral animals. The cay developed from fragements of corals and shells. They were washed to the calm side of the reef by waves and wind. This formed a single plateau.

Birds would carry seeds to the sheltered areas behind the the sand bank where they rested. These seeds grew into plants and stabilized the cay. In turn this encouraged more seabirds to rest at this cay. The seabirds were then able to fertilize the cay further. More plants were able to grow in the centre of Michaelmas Cay. Thus, the ecosystem of the largest coral cay was created.

Environmental restrictions placed on the cay have reduced the number of people that can visit. The island and reef remain essentially untouched and in a pristine state. Those visiting will notice when diving or snorkelling that the corals appear wholly unspoiled.

Michaelmas Cay is the SAFE and easy way to snorkel and dive.

Due to the consistency of our tours, the birds appear unafraid by people on their island. As chicks, they see people every day. They consider us to be a harmless and natural part of their environment. Similarly, the fish in Michaelmas Reef are also accustoed to people.

They consider people as part of their environment as well, when swimming in this reef. They may even be comfortable enough to swim near you. But don’t make any sudden movements or they will swim away!

The large cay protects the waters around it from undue stress. It is a gently sloping beach that provides entry into calm waters. The water will gradually become deep and there are no immediate drop off points near the beach.

If the tides are low, people can walk to the first coral. It is only a few metres away from the waters edge. People enjoy the reef more this way because it is safer and more calm.

maroon-clownfish where we go

At Michaelmas Cay, you can either swim to the beach or ride over in the glass bottom boat. Should you take the glass bottom boat, once you hop in the water, you can put your fins on and adjust your mask and snorkel. Snorkeling from the cay is great for beginners. It is easier to adjust to the equipment in shallow waters versus deep waters.

Where we go: Lunch

After your amazing trip to Michaelmas Cay, hop back on the boat for lunch. We serve our delicious hot & cold buffet lunch before departing Michaelmas Cay. This lunch includes a variety of hot dishes, scrumptious cold meats, selected breads, tropical fruits, and salads.

When everyone is full to their content, the boat departs Michaelmas Cay and heads to Hastings Reef. Once you arrive to Hastings Reef you are content, rested and ready to enter the water again.

While travelling over to Hastings Reef, we often see dolphins and whales during their migration season (May-September).

Where We Go: Hastings Reef

Hastings Reef is located 30 nautical miles out from Cairns. At the end of the last ice age, around 11,000 – 12,000 years ago, this is where the Australian coast line actually resided. This is here the reef began to grow.

Hastings is a typical outer reef. On most days, a line of breakers mark where the deep ocean swells break onto the reef wall. The reef itself is shallow on top, with steep sides reminiscent of cliffs falling away into the surrounding water.

Where we go Seaturtle

This is a preferred location for lively corals and Marine life. Far away from the coast and the effects of rivers and streams. The corals and marine life thrive out on the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

For divers and snorkellers you are swimming in the clear ocean water which provides the utmost visibility.

Seastar moors on the calm side at one of the most interesting locations. Although the back of the vessel may only be a few metres from the shallow coral, the bow of the boat is in 20 metres of water.

It is here you can experience the true wonders of this Outer Edge Reef. There are so many amazing things to see. The coral caves, coral overhangs, deep water drop offs, coral canyons, swim throughs and shallow coral bays are only metres from the boat.

Along the steep edges, there are many wonderful marine life. Some include swirling schools of small fish, colourful parrot fish, turtles, giant clams, “friendly” little reef sharks, bright yellow butterfly fish, pairs of rabbit fish, and of course, Nemo.

It’s definitely worth cruising this far out for the best of the Great Barrier Reef.

Swim With Whales Great Barrier Reef - Australia

Our boat has an exclusive licence to  swim with Dwarf Minke Whales  when they are sighted on the Great Barrier Reef. This means that the boat will stop and a long line is put in the water and 10 people at a time are allowed to enter the water and wait for the Dwarf Minke Whales to approach and swim around them.

Swimming with whales is one of the most pure animal interactions you will ever experience, as these little 8 meter whales are so inquisitive and friendly and happy to interact and come close to have a good look at you.

Please note:  As whales are wild animals this interaction is just a bonus to the Great Barrier Reef tour if whales are sighted.

Where Was ‘This Little Love of Mine’ Filmed? Australia Doubles as California on Screen

N ot all love stories are created equal, but what many have in common is their great taste in film locations . To make the romance playing out on screen believable, it’s important to track down the perfect spots to get the cameras rolling. Earlier this summer, the team behind the controversial book-to-film adaptation It Ends With Us managed to make New Jersey feel like Boston. Before that, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell took us to the land Down Under in Anyone but You , which also arrived to mixed reviews. As we move into cuffing season, other previously released romance movies are gaining popularity again, such as This Little Love of Mine , which arrived in 2021.

The Christine Luby-directed project stars Saskia Hampele as Laura, a young ambitious lawyer living in San Francisco, California. It may sound like she’s living the dream, but being so far from her childhood home of Australia isn’t easy for our lead character, who’s life changes forever when she’s granted a chance to head back. As this new opportunity causes her career to soar to new heights, Laura also finds love in unexpected places. Now that we’ve covered the plot, let’s look into the This Little Love of Mine film locations around Queensland.

Cairns, Australia

  • Key Scenes: Anytime Laura appears to be in San Francisco, she’s actually in the Cairns area of Queensland.
  • Best Time to Visit: Winter in the southern hemisphere is when tourists seem to prefer the temperatures, which range from 17-26 degrees.
  • Transportation Options: Walking, using public transit or hailing a cab are all convenient ways to explore Cairns for anyone hesitant to drive.

The This Little Love of Mine crew did plan to film parts of their movie on location in California, but COVID-19 travel restrictions kept them Down Under in June 2020. On her Instagram , Luby revealed that it only took 16 days to shoot the love story, which showcases just a small part of northern Australia’s beauty.

Things to Do: Visit the Cairns Aquarium , take a stroll on the Esplanade Boardwalk and enjoy the nature in the Cairns Botanic Gardens .

Where to Eat: Waterbar & Grill Steakhouse has some of the “best steak or ribs you’ll ever experience,” according to past patrons. For healthy, vegan options check out the five-star rated Snoogies .

Where to Stay: Oaks Cairns Hotel and The Abbott Boutique Hotel are among the affordable accomodations in the area.

Palm Cove, Australia

  • Key Scenes: Showcasing the beauty of Australia with landscape shots and romantic scenery to compliment Laura’s love story.
  • Best Time to Visit: September to November is considered “tropical spring” in Palm Cove, with warmer temperatures and minimal rainfall.
  • Transportation Options: If you plan on participating in guided tours on your trip, many local operators will pick you up directly from your accomodation.

About 15 minutes from Cairns (or San Francisco, in the This Little Love of Mine cinematic universe) is Palm Cove, disguised as Sapphire Cove on screen. Much like the real life destination, the fictional location is presented as a resort destination and wedding setting. There’s no shortage of wellness retreats in Palm Cove, and the various adults only activities and establishments in the area suggest it’s not exactly family friendly.

Things to Do: Join the Kayak Turtle Tour from Palm Cove, or embark on the Kuranda Scenic Railway Day Trip .

Where to Eat: Dine wild-style at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures Breakfast with the Koalas . For something more calm, El Greko Greek Taverna serves awesome Mediterranean cuisine or The Reef House Restaurant offers an adults only restaurant experience.

Where to Stay: Mango Lagoon Resort & Wellness Spa isn’t cheap, but they do promise a relaxing experience where you might even find romance like Laura in This Little Love of Mine .

2024 Tour Championship Full Field: Top 30 Battle for the FedEx Cup and Big Bucks

John schwarb | aug 26, 2024.

Venerable East Lake Golf Club is again the site of the Tour Championship.

The PGA Tour season which began in January in Kapalua ends this week in Atlanta.

The Tour Championship is again the finale for the three-tournament FedEx Cup playoffs, where the field has been whittled from 70 to 50 to 30. A $100 million prize pool is at stake this week with a whopping $25 million to the winner. Pro golf is overflowing with cash these days but that’s still a number that will get the attention of the world’s best.

Scottie Scheffler comes in at the top of the points list and will start at -10 in the “starting strokes” format—and if that sounds familiar, it is. Scheffler has come in as the points leader three years in a row, but the last two times he failed to bring home the big prize as Rory McIlroy grabbed it in 2022 (his third FedEx Cup) and Viktor Hovland won last year. Both are in the field again this year, as are past FedEx Cup champions Patrick Cantlay (2021), Xander Schauffele (2017) and Billy Horschel (2014).

Xander Schauffele, who has had the low gross score outright or tied in two of the last four years (meaning best score regardless of starting strokes), will begin the week two behind Scheffler. Hideki Matsuyama, the winner of the first playoff event at the FedEx St. Jude, is three back and Keegan Bradley—the Cinderella story who barely made it to the BMW Championship then won it —is four back. The farthest-back players will be at even and need to make up a lot of ground to contend for the title.

East Lake Golf Club, the oldest course in Atlanta and where Bobby Jones learned how to play, has hosted the Tour Championship annually since 2004. The course underwent a significant restoration and will look a bit different on screens this year, especially with the removal of many trees. The course is now a par-71 instead of 70 (the downhill 14th hole will now be a par-5) and playing slightly longer at 7,490 yards.

Command of III MEF’s logistics arm changes hands on Okinawa

Brig. Gen. Adam Chalkley, outgoing commander of the 3rd Marine Logistics Group, embraces his successor, Brig. Gen. Kevin Collins, during a ceremony at Camp Kinser, Okinawa, Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024.

CAMP KINSER, Okinawa — Command of the support arm for the Marine Corps’ rapid response force in the Indo-Pacific is now in the hands of a general on his third Okinawa tour.

Brig. Gen. Kevin Collins assumed command of the 3rd Marine Logistics Group from Brig. Gen. Adam Chalkley during a ceremony Thursday at the consolidated club on Camp Kinser, the group’s headquarters. About 220 Marines, family, Japanese troops and other guests packed the club.

The group provides combat logistics support to the III Marine Expeditionary Force and other Marines in the region. This includes supply, maintenance, transportation, engineering, health services and other services for Marines during exercises and other operations.

Lt. Gen. Roger Turner, III MEF commander, highlighted Chalkley’s leadership through the latest phase of the Corps’ Force Design plan.

“I think everybody knows that this MLG has really been one of the centerpieces of the Marine Corps’ Force Design as we started to morph what we were doing as a service to what we’re going to do going forward,” he said at the ceremony. “And this is really the centerpiece of that, and your leadership of that change has been difficult and hard, and I just appreciate the way you’ve approached it.”

During Chalkley’s tenure, the logistic group’s Marines began testing a 3D-printing unit in shipping containers made to drop into austere locations like jungles to fill supply line gaps. The testing is part of the Force Design plan for rapid movement and reduced demand on supply lines.

Collins said he plans to lead the group through continuing changes in the security situation on Okinawa and in the Pacific. He was last stationed on the island six years ago, he said at the ceremony.

“I think III MEF has evolved fairly rapidly, fairly significantly, not just in the capability that we possess, but how we apply that capability, how we fight as a MEF,” he said. “And I look forward to continuing that work that Adam started with Force Design, [the Defense Policy Review Initiative] and all those things to evolve the [logistics combat element] of the MEF.”

The Defense Policy Review Initiative, an agreement by the U.S. and Japan to relocate some Marine assets from Okinawa to Guam, includes Japan paying $3 billion of the estimated $8.6 billion cost to build Camp Blaz and its surrounding infrastructure on Guam.

Collins most recently served as deputy director for operations at the National Joint Operations Intelligence Center, Operations Team Three, J-3, Joint Staff at the Pentagon. He’s also served as deputy commander of Marine Corps Forces South.

He enlisted in 1990 and commissioned in 1995. He is a combat veteran of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, according to his official biography. His previous Okinawa experience includes assistant chief of staff with the 3rd Marine Division, and as a company grade officer with 3rd Force Service Support Group.

Chalkley heads to Washington, D.C., to serve as inspector general of the Marine Corps.
