The third class city of Oroquieta lies in western Mindanao below Lopez Jaena. It is a medium-sized town famed for its location on Iligan Bay and the associated plaza.

The main attraction of Oroquieta City is its setting on Iligan Bay, which itself boasts the Oroquieta City Public Plaza, one of the best in Northern Mindanao . Views from the plaza of the town and bay are superb and it’s also good for a picnic.

Not many tourists make it over to this side of Northern Mindanao, being mainly a coconut producing agricultural region of the island. Those visiting Mount Malindang National Park often make the effort to head over to Oroquieta, however. You can get in by flying to Dipolog from Manila and taking a bus across.

20 Best Misamis Occidental Tourist Spots 2024 (+ Perangat Festival)

 alt=

“Misamis Occidental”

That was my answer to a friend’s question about my next travel destination. He then stopped, for a few seconds, thinking.

I knew what was going on. Looking at his face, it was not confusion. It was more of he knew the province but couldn’t pinpoint where it is. It was like meeting an old friend but you couldn’t remember how and where did you meet.

“Sa Visayas yan diba? Or Mindanao?” (Is that in Visayas or Mindanao?). He continued.

“Yes. Mindanao. Northern Mindanao.”

I understand that this is usually the situation when we talk about Misamis Occidental. First, we have too many Occidental and Oriental provinces in the Philippines. You really have to stand out to be recognized such as the likes of Negros or Davao.

But for Misamis, it still needs a little push. A little exposure perhaps, to be able to leave a mark in everyone’s minds that MisOcc is the next tourism destination in the country. That Misamis Occidental is definitely the place to be.

Ozamiz City Misamis Occidental

This is the purpose of this blog post – to reintroduce the beauty of Misamis Occidental. I recently joined the Laag-Laag sa MisOcc2022 by the Provincial tourism, DOT Region 10, and TPB to explore the best of what the province can offer and also celebrate the Perangat Festival.

I will share my stories and the attractions that we visited in an attempt to tickle your curiosity and start seeing the province in a new light. I hope after reading this you’ll consider visiting.

Without further ado, here are the 20 tourist spots we explored in Misamis Occidental, that you definitely shouldn’t miss. This can also be a great travel guide and resource.

Ozamiz City Misamis Occidental

1. Bawbawon Island

Located in the tranquil town of Plaridel , just a 30-minute travel from the capital city of Oroquieta lies a hidden paradise. It is covered with mangroves, surrounded by a sanctuary of rich marine biodiversity. This is Bawbawon island.

The name Bawbawon was derived from the same Visayan word which means shallow. It’s because the waters surrounding the island tend to be too shallow for motorboats during low tide. So unless you have plans of staying on the island longer, you have to leave before low tide.

Bawbawon Island

It was about lunchtime when we arrived at the port in Plaridel. After experiencing the warm Misamisnon welcome from the LGU, we then traveled to the island. We were grouped by 8 and assigned to a motorboat.

We braved through the rough waves until reaching the mangrove area where the water was calmer. After about 20 minutes of boat ride, we arrived at the shores of Bawbawon island.

Bawbawon Island

It’s so nice to see and experience another pristine beach after being stuck at home during the pandemic. I would love to walk along the shoreline but our lunch was served. I can have enough time to explore the beach after eating delicious seafood and local delicacies.

Bawbawon Island

Matakaw yarn? Haha

Bawbawon Island

The longer I stay on the island, the more I appreciate the lush coconut trees, forest, mangroves, and the beach. We spent more time relaxing, chatting with Mayor Gadwin E. Handumon and the LGUs, as well as taking more pictures.

I would love to stay longer but we have more destinations to explore in the province. And it was already low tide, we have to leave if we don’t want to get stuck on the island. Bawbawon is definitely one of the best spots to visit in the province.

2. Piduan Falls

When I posted the photos of Piduan Falls on my Jon to the World Facebook Page ( it went quite viral. LOL), a lot of people commented that it looked like Asik Asik Falls of North Cotobato.

Well, they have a point because both are considered curtain waterfalls, and both are stunning. But Piduan Falls is a charm, a beauty of its own.

Yes, Asik Asik Falls is more famous now, but Piduan falls is a new destination. A fresh offering to travelers. If you happen to explore Northern Mindanao, why don’t you try and experience Piduan falls?

Piduan Falls

Located in Don Victoriano , Piduan Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls that I’ve seen in a while. We explored it after visiting the town’s strawberry farms. Once we arrived at the jump-off area, we were welcomed by a clean and rushing river. It was like a prelude to the beauty that we were about to witness.

The guides said that the trekking is just 20 minutes, but with the rocky terrain, I think it took a little longer. Remember to just take your time while hiking and wear sturdy sandals and hiking shoes.

Piduan Falls

The quite long walk was worth it when we finally see the falls from afar. And as we got closer, it seemed like it was getting more stunning. The waters were visibly clear, inviting us to take a dip.

I was one of the first people to arrive, so I took advantage of it. I went straight to the falls, enjoyed its beauty, and mustered the courage to ask the staff from DOT Region 10 to take my pictures. Haha! He was nice and a good photographer too. Look!

Piduan Falls

Then lunch was served. It just feels good to enjoy food while surrounded by nature right?

After the satisfying meal, I finally gave up and answered the falls’ call to take a dip. The icy cool water was relaxing. I felt reenergized to trek back to our coaster and continue our tour.

3. Heritage town of  Jimenez

After a day of touring the province, it was already dark when we arrived in the town of Jimenez. Sir Bong Abelidas, Municipal Tourism Officer, and Mayor Jojo Chiong warmly welcomed us with their kind words and delicious food.

Jimenez is a heritage town of Misamis Occidental where you can find the San Juan Bautista Parish Church also known as Jimenez Church, hailed as one of the most intact and preserved Spanish churches in the country.

The town also showcases its old and ancestral houses that would make you feel transcended back to the Spanish colonial period. The LGU has done an amazing job of preserving these structures that they’re eyeing to be the next UNESCO Heritage site.

The drizzle outside did not hinder us from exploring the stunning Jimenez church. Oh man, the lighting outside makes the experience surreal and dramatic.

Jimenez Church

Inside, we witnessed one of the best-preserved interiors of a Roman Catholic church in the country. The impressive paintings on the ceiling and walls, which were completed in 1898, will leave everyone in awe. Upstairs is a pipe organ and a passageway to the belfry.

The next day, we were so delighted to be back in Jimenez to explore the town’s ancestral houses. I’m impressed with the amazing work that they do to preserve this cultural heritage.

Some of the noteworthy structures are the Caza de Ozamiz and Bacarro Printing Press. It would be nice to be back and have ample time to know and research intensively about each house’s story.

4. Cotta Fort

As we wrap up the first day touring the province, we had our dinner at the historic Cotta Fort in Ozamiz city. Cotta fort is one of the oldest structures in Ozamiz city which served as a defense and constabulary to avoid sudden attacks by Moro pirates along the Panguil Bay during the Spanish era. It was built in 1756 by Father Jose Ducos, and served as an outpost and shelter to many Spanish ships during colonial times. It is also a witness to many historical events and battles during Spanish and Japanese occupations.

Exploring the left side of the fort, you’ll find the Laureate Blessed Virgin of Cotta frequently visited by devotees and tourists.

Cota Fort

Sabi nila ka-look-alike ko raw itong si former Mayor or Vice Mayor of Ozamiz. Talaga ba? hehe Kaya pinicturan ko na. 😉

After learning more about history, they served us some delectable dishes for dinner. The local dish Balbacua was a big hit, a fusion of flavorful sauce and tender meat. Delicious!

We were delighted that we had a chance to visit Cotta Fort again the following day to take more photos and experience more of the rich history and heritage of this famous structure in the city.

5. Subanen Village Eco-Tourism Park

A soon-to-rise tourist destination in Tudela, Misamis Occidental is about to open next year – The Subanen Village! And we got a sneak peek of the property in our Laag-Laag sa MisOcc tour.

It was already dark and drizzling but that didn’t stop us to explore the Subanen Eco Village. This project aims to promote and preserve the Subanen culture for the next generation to enjoy. Subanen tribes (or people of the river) are the indigenous people and the first settlers of the province.

Subanen Eco Village

The houses are built with indigenous materials too. The local tourism shared that they also plan to build many amenities like cottages and a swimming pool for the comfort of the visitors.

It is expected that the property will be opened to the public by next year. So for now, we just enjoyed watching the Subanen dance and exploring the houses which will serve as an accommodation for guests.

6. Gakit sa Lopez Jaena

Lopez Jaena has a special place in my heart. The moment I got off our coaster I instantly heard one of the catchiest and most danceable local jingles in my life! Yes, in my life.

Then, we witnessed the overflowing vigor of the LGU employees dancing to the tune of Welcome to Lopez Jaena. Oh man, I know myself. I’m definitely not a dancer, but with this energy and music, you just couldn’t help but move to the groove.

Gakit sa Lopez Jaena

I told myself. Just give me 5 minutes to study the steps, and I’ll join the dance craze. Wow! Just kidding. Haha!

Lopez Jaena definitely made a warm and positive impression. And it didn’t disappoint when we visit their most popular tourist destination – The Gakit or what they call Gakit sa Lopez Jaena.

Gakit is a local word that means balsa or floating cottage because just a few minutes of boat ride from the port are numerous gakit for guests to enjoy.

Gakit sa Lopez Jaena

Makulay ang buhay. 😉

Gakit sa Lopez Jaena

The floating cottages were huge, sturdy, and can accommodate many people which is perfect for family or group gatherings. You can also do some water activities like swimming and snorkeling.

Once we went back to the port,  we were treated to delicious seafood and local dishes. Our hearts and stomachs were full in Lopez Jaena.

7. Sapang Dalaga Falls

What a nice way to end a day of adventures in Misamis Occidental by visiting Sapang Dalaga Falls.

Formerly known as Baga Falls, Sapang Dalaga Falls which is also the same name as the town is just an easy access from the main road and near the Poblacion area. No difficult hiking is needed.

Sapang Dalaga Falls

It is massive, standing at a height of 60 feet. Sapang Dalaga is a name derived from an old Visayan word that means “maiden at the creek.” That explains why there is a daunting statue of a woman just near the waterfalls. With its expression, the statue really looks very serious in doing her job – guarding the waterfalls.

8. Strawberry Farms in Don Victoriano

Who would have thought there are strawberry farms in Misamis Occidental? After arriving in Don Victoriano and experiencing the warm welcome of the LGU and its locals, we boarded 4×4 on our way to the strawberry farms.

Oh man, it  wasn’t an easy ride. There were paved roads but there are still parts that need more development. I’m sure the LGU is currently completing all the infrastructures going to the mountains where the farms are located.

Strawberry Farm Don Victoriano

OK ba back up dancers ko? hehe 🙂

Strawberry Farm Don Victoriano

Manamis namis. 😉

Upon arriving at the farm, we were welcomed by cool and relaxing weather. The temperature in the area can go as low as 15 degrees celsius perfect for propagating strawberries and crops.

The strawberries of Don Victoriano were juicy and delicious. It’s also fresh and organic. Probably the best-tasting strawberries I had in a while.

You can also pick strawberries for only 500 pesos per kilo. Strawberry jam is also available for Php 150.

9. Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park

The participants of Laag-Laag sa MisOcc2022 discovered a summer getaway in Misamis Occidental, the Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park.

Of course, this might be familiar to the locals of Tangub city, but for us coming from different parts of the country, this is a great addition to a list of cool and foggy destinations which is perfect for summer.

The highlight of this place is the stone chapel on top of a hill overlooking the mountainous MisOcc and its neighboring provinces. It is suitable for any photo ops, and also a chance to have a moment of silence and prayers.

Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park

Food is also available through catering service. Once the place is fully operational again, everyone can enjoy its zipline which is considered one of the highest and longest in Asia! ATV rides, horseback riding, and camping are available too.

10. Belvedere

Belvedere is definitely unforgettable for me and my fellow travelers on this tour. Aside from the stunning views and chilly atmosphere, the team was creative enough to incorporate Belvedere in a song to the tune of the hit, “I’ll be there” by The Jackson Five and Mariah Carey.

It goes something like, “just call my name, Belvedere.” Haha!

Belvedere is a contemporary-designed structure with a scenic view of Mt. Malindang and the city. It stands 980 meters above sea level with an approximate land area of 523 square meters. This is part of the Gardens of the World Development Project located in Brgy. Fertig Hills, Tangub City.

Belvedere

Upon reaching the top of Belvedere, you’ll experience a stunning view of the mountains and clouds while enjoying the cool weather. I just couldn’t help myself but capture this moment. Thanks to Jan, my fellow travel blogger for this photo. When you visit Tangub city, this should definitely be part of your itinerary.

11. Parola in Tangub

We experienced the most festive and warmest welcome from Tangub city. We saw kids and residents lined up on the main highway, waving with their big smiles as our coaster passed through. What a heartwarming experience.

We then stopped at the coastal area, an outdoor catwalk lead us to the Parola, a tall structure built into the sea with a restaurant. We had our sumptuous lunch there.

Parola, and its surrounding structure, is a perfect place to relax. Over the years, a restaurant was built to accommodate guests. Anyone who wants to dine at the Parola has to contact them prior to your visit to prepare the food in advance.

12. Clarin House of Suman

Suman or sticky rice cake is a favorite snack among Filipinos. Over the years, many flavors of suman were introduced, but how many flavors have you tried?

Well, at Clarin House of Suman you can taste as many as 18 flavors of suman! We experienced it when we had our breakfast there during the second day of our Laag-Laag sa MisOcc.

Clarin House of Suman

Choose your flavor.

Aside from the delicious buffet breakfast, the highlight of the day was the different flavors of suman. I’m sorry, I just couldn’t try it all because I was already full. But my favorites are cheese, chocolate, and langka .

These are the perfect pasalubong when you visit the province. The House of Suman is located in Clarin along the national highway. It’s a green building with a leaf-shaped roof near the border with Ozamiz.

13. Oroquieta Plaza and Kiosko

The lumiyagan (squid) in Oroquieta was delicious. It was the best squid dish I’ve ever tasted in my life. Seriously. You have to try the seafood dishes in MisOcc!

Aside from the sumptuous buffet breakfast, it was the warm welcome of Oroquieta that really made our visit extra special. Imagine, they even prepared a rondalla serenading us while we feasted on the lumiyagan , sinaing , suman tinambiran , broas, tocino, etc.

The Oroquieta Kiosko played a huge role in the city’s history and heritage. It was in 1887 when the kiosk was constructed together with the church, convent, and the Municipio when Oroquieta became a pueblo. Over the years, it has become an identity of the city.

In the 1920s, the Kiosk underwent a major renovation, making it sturdy and concrete. It was the time when the ownership of the plaza was transferred from the church to the municipality.

Now, the Oroquieta Kiosk and Plaza is the center of the city where people relax and enjoy. Don’t forget to visit when you travel to MisOcc.

14. Caluya Floating Cottage

It was almost sunset when we arrived in Brgy. Caluya in Sapang Dalaga to visit the Caluya Floating Cottage, but we still pushed through.

This project is vital not only for the Department of Tourism but also for the community. Regional Director May Salvana- Unchuan of DOT Region 10 shared that they took care of this community, prioritizing the income-generating tourism project despite the pandemic. Now that tourism is finally open for everyone, this destination needs the exposure it deserves.

Caluya Floating Cottage

Just a 5-minute boat ride from the port, we arrived at the floating cottages. We decided to dock into a huge cottage that can accommodate up to 50 people. Our guide said that there are many cottages that would fit depending on the customers’ needs whether for small groups or big groups.

Visitors can also enjoy many water activities such as snorkeling, swimming, and even fishing. This place is perfect for group gatherings yet still getting the serenity of nature.

15. Caluya Shrine

I know you’re familiar with Jesus Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janiero. Well, you don’t need to travel as far as Brazil to have the same experience, because you can have that in Caluya Shrine in Sapang Dalaga with a panoramic view of nature.

In our case, it was already dark when we arrived at the jump-off area to Caluya Shrine. Armed with our flashlight and a little perseverance, we hiked the 197 steps to reach the Caluya Shrine.

Caluya Shrine

Thanks for the photo Azrael .

It was still a unique experience to be there on top at night. We lit some candles and relished the serenity that the place brings.

16. Caputol Heights

It was our last day in Misamis Occidental. We expect everything to be just be okay – having breakfast, lunch, then go straight to the airport.

But everything changed when we arrived at Caputol Heights in the town of Aloran. Mayor Junie Roa was there with his staff ready to welcome us into the resort and event area. Buffet breakfast was served complete with the town’s best dishes and delicacies.

Best of all, there’s a live band playing some OG songs for us to enjoy. The band was exceptional, ridiculously good musicians. We couldn’t help but dance and move to the groove of their music.

There are some cabins being constructed on the property. Some amenities are still being completed too. Capitol Heights is an exceptional place for events and celebrations.

After our breakfast, the local Tourism staff toured us around the town center visiting the St. Mathews Catholic Church and also the ruins located at the back of the structure.

17. Panguil Bay Bridge

The new longest bridge in the Philippines will soon rise in Misamis Occidental. The Panguil Bay Bridge will connect Tangub City and Tubod in Lanao Del Norte. With a length of 3.7 km., this will be the country’s longest bridge dethroning San Juanico Bridge in Leyte and Samar.

This project is expected to cut the travel time from the two destinations from more than 2 hours to just a few minutes.

Panguil Bay bridge

We had the chance to witness the construction of the bridge when we passed through Pangil Bay. We also passed through the construction area. Though we weren’t allowed to go out of the coaster for safety reasons, it’s clear that people there are working double-time to complete the bridge by 2023.

18. Punta Meriam Resort

It was time for lunch. Of course, I was excited because I was a little tired from covering the Streetdance presentation in Ozamiz that morning. I thought it was just a usual lunch and of course delectable dishes. But we experienced more.

Punta Meriam Resort in the town of Panaon has a distinctly relaxing vibe. As we enter the restaurant, we were also greeted with warmth by the resort’s owners. Looking around, I realized that this resort is the perfect place for solitude. The lush trees and chirping birds are perfect for that relaxed and tranquil moment that city dwellers crave. Oh man, the food was also superb. Delicious!

With the resort owners. Thanks for the photo Richard of LionhearTV

After our lunch, we then have ample time to explore the resort. They have a picturesque swimming pool with easy access to the beach. The rooms are also aesthetically designed. I just admire the love and effort that owners have put into this haven.

When you visit MisOcc and just want to chill and commune with nature, Punta Meriam is the place to be.

19. Immaculate Conception Cathedral

We had a chance to visit the Immaculate Conception Cathedral of Ozamiz after covering the Streetdance presentation in the morning.

The facade has a contemporary design. It was conceptualized by Filipino architect Leandro Locsin in 1960. The current design has actually gone through some renovations in the 90s.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

The facade looks very modern but I learned that the church actually has a rich history. The church was established by the Recoletos in 1789 and later became known as Immaculate Conception Parish. With its contemporary look now, it’s clear that the church has gone through a lot of changes. Currently, Immaculate Conception Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ozamiz.

20. Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape

Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape

Photo Credit: Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape

The Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape will make us all realize the value of environmental conservation. It’s a wetland conservation area along the coast of Danao Bay in the municipality of Baliangao. It covers four barangays (Misom, Sinian, Tugas, and Landing) with a total area of 294 hectares of mangrove and coral reef ecosystems. It’s a protected area through Proclamation No. 418.20.

There are pathways constructed in the area for visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Misamis Occidental Celebrates the first Perangat Festival

Our Laag-Laag sa MisOCc is actually part of the celebration of the Perangat Festival 2022 and the 93rd Provincial Anniversary of the province.

But the main highlights of the event happened on November 12 with a Festival Street Dancing and Float Parade in the morning. Followed by the Dance Showdown and Ritual presentation in the afternoon. Then ending with a blast with the Perangat Concert with Asenso Songbirds and The Soul Supreme, KZ Tandingan.

Perangat is a Subanen word which means progress, which is suitable with the province’s tagline and branding #AsensoMisamisOccidental.

Perangat Festival

We started the day by attending the Street dancing and Float Parade in Ozamiz. The same event also took place in the municipality of Calamba so our team was divided into two groups.

I truly enjoyed the colors and arts presented by different municipalities in the Street dancing and Float Parade. It feels good to know that the province is taking pride of the Subanen culture through performance and arts.

The main event happened in the afternoon as different teams from many municipalities and cities battled it out for the Subanen Dance Ritual Showdown. It was a privilege to be witnessing this grand showcase of talent and heritage. Here’s the list of the winners.

CITY CATEGORY Champion: Oroquieta City Best in Costume: Oroquieta City Best in Musicality: Oroquieta City Best in Props: Oroquieta City Best in Choreography: Oroquieta City

MUNICIPAL CATEGORY: Champion: Jimenez First Runner-Up: Don Victoriano Second Runner-up: Lopez Jaena Third Runner-Up: Sinacaban Best in Props: Jimenez Best in Costume: Jimenez Best in Choreography: Jimenez Best in Musicality: Don Victoriano

That’s it. These are the attractions that we visited in Misamis Occidental. In case I miss some other tourist spots, feel free to share it in the comment section. Who knows, I might go back to Misamis Occidental and explore more of the beauty and heritage of the province.
