Student International Travel

The steps in this process are only for students who are NOT traveling as part of an official Education Abroad Program or Social Work Field Placement. All other student travel to international locations is subject to the Student International Travel Policy .

Please note that this travel policy is separate from the Request for Travel Authorization (RTA) process. Students who are expecting to receive reimbursement from their department for their travel expenses should complete an RTA in addition to the forms required by Texas Global. The RTA process is administered at the department level.

Before proceeding, please note that students traveling to a UT-Restricted Region must follow the Restricted Regions Travel Authorization Process for approval. Registration and insurance requirements still apply.

Note - Please see the Travel Registration FAQs for commonly asked questions.

Student International Travel Process

Request restricted regions travel approval, individual students.

Check whether the country you are traveling to is on the UT Austin  Restricted Regions list . If so, apply for and obtain travel approval from the International Oversight Committee . If your destination does not appear on the Restricted Regions list, proceed to Step 2.

Group Leaders

If you will be leading a group of students abroad, you are required to first  obtain approval from Texas Global Risk and Safety  AND complete the mandatory  Safety Assessment for International Group Experiences (SAIGE) process . All travel to locations designated as  Restricted Regions  requires approval by the International Oversight Committee.

Visit the UT Austin Group International Travel Approval Process page for more information .

Register Your Travel

As outlined in the University of Texas at Austin International Travel Process , all University of Texas international travelers (not participating in approved Education Abroad programs) must register their trips in the UT Austin International Travel Registry  (ITR).

After completing your travel registration, create a confirmation receipt and email it to Global Risk and Safety at  [email protected] . In the file name, include your first name, last name, and EID (example: “Jon Smith JS1234 ITR”).

Review Information About Insurance Coverage While Abroad

All UT students traveling internationally are automatically enrolled in  UT Overseas Insurance coverage  and required to pay the associated fee of $19 per week. These charges are not included in student tuition and will appear on a student's  What I Owe page .

Students will be charged for each semester of Overseas Insurance coverage individually. This means that a student studying/researching abroad for continuous academic periods will see a separate charge for each academic period on their What I Owe page .

Students who are traveling to their country of citizenship may be exempted from paying the Overseas Insurance fee. To be exempted, you will need to submit documentation of your citizenship (i.e., copy of your valid passport) and a formal request for an exception .

International Students Traveling Abroad

To determine whether or not you are eligible for a waiver of the UT Domestic (U.S.) student insurance fees while you are abroad, review the  guidelines  to find your eligibility category and deadline.

For specific questions about insurance, your quickest source for an answer is available at  Ask Us .

Review Health and Safety Information for Your Destination

Review information from resources like the U.S. Department of State and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , as well as the health and safety resources that Global Risk and Safety has developed, including:

  • Travel Safety 101
  • Handouts for developing self-care plans, emergency action plans, and more
  • How to use On Call International

Register your trip in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)

Registering in the free  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) through the U.S. Department of State will inform the U.S. Embassy you are in-country and allow them to email you critical alerts and travel/security advice while abroad.

Non-U.S. citizens can register their trip in their home country’s equivalent of STEP.

Complete Mandatory Export Control Documentation

If you are traveling abroad with any equipment owned by UT Austin, you must complete the TMP License Exemption form and carry a copy with you while traveling. Please note: this form does not require approval by UT Austin; it is self-effectuating upon your completion and signature of the document.

All university employees (including graduate student employees) traveling on official university business to a country of concern (China, including Hong Kong and Macau, Russia, Iran, or North Korea) are required to utilize a university provided loaner laptop while on official travel. For additional information please contact the Office of Research Support and Compliance via [email protected] .

Travel Registration FAQs

The UT Austin International Travel Registry (ITR) is the system for registering international travel for students who have not completed any action within the Education Abroad (MyAbroad) Portal, which typically means the travel or research falls outside of a traditional study abroad program. The ITR is used to locate travelers in the event of an emergency. This registry automatically enrolls travelers in the mandatory Overseas Insurance and emergency assistance coverage through On Call International .

Personal travel should not be registered in the ITR. The ITR is reserved for international travel conducted for university business purposes (e.g., study, research, internship, field work).

If you are a citizen of the country to which you will be traveling and you wish to opt out of enrollment in overseas insurance, you will need to submit documentation of your citizenship (i.e., copy of your valid passport) and a formal request for an exception .

If your travel plans change, please email the Global Risk and Safety team with updated details and we will update your travel record on your behalf.

Burma (Myanmar) Travel Advisory

Travel advisory june 6, 2024, burma (myanmar) - level 4: do not travel.

Updated Country Summary, to include information about implementation of a conscription law, and changes to the “ If you decide to travel to Burma” section.

Do not travel to Burma due to  civil unrest, armed conflict, and arbitrary enforcement of local laws . Reconsider travel to Burma due to  limited and/or inadequate healthcare and emergency medical resources, and areas with land mines and unexploded ordnances . Exercise increased caution due to  wrongful detentions .

COUNTRY SUMMARY:  The Burma military regime detained and deposed elected government officials in a February 2021 coup d'état. Protests and demonstrations against military rule continue, often on significant dates. The military has responded to those protests by  arbitrarily detaining individuals  and with the indiscriminate use of deadly force against protesters and bystanders.

The Department of State has determined that the  risk of wrongful detention  of U.S. nationals by the military regime exists.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Burma due to security concerns amidst the ongoing armed conflict. This may be of particular concern to crime victims outside of Rangoon.

To mitigate safety and security risks, U.S. government employees’ dependents, under the age of 21, cannot reside in Burma with their U.S. government parent assigned to work in Burma.

Civil unrest and armed conflict  occur throughout Burma. The level of civil unrest and armed conflict varies significantly between and within states and regions and may change at any time.

Civil unrest and armed violence due to fighting between the military regime and various ethnic groups and militias occur particularly in parts of Chin, Kachin, Kayin, Rakhine, and Shan States, as well as in Sagaing and Magway regions.

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are used in the ongoing armed conflicts, including within the greater Rangoon area. From January to December 2023, the U.S. Embassy in Rangoon calculated an average of fifteen IEDs per month detonated against regime targets, while an average of eight unexploded IEDs were discovered and safely disposed of per month by security authorities. Outside of Rangoon, there have been IED attacks against checkpoints and other critical infrastructure.

While land mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) exist throughout Burma , NGOs working on this issue state the greatest concerns are in Shan, Chin, and Kachin State. The locations of landmines and UXO are often not marked or otherwise unidentifiable.

The military regime  arbitrarily enforces local laws , including often detaining individuals without respect for their fair trial guarantees or other applicable rights . Foreigners, including U.S. citizens, are not excluded from this practice. U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Burma may be detained and regime authorities could deny access to U.S. consular services or information about the alleged crime.

Local law enforcement officials may detain and/or deport U.S. citizens for speaking out or protesting against the military regime, including on their personal social media accounts, and for sending private electronic messages critical of the military regime. Facebook and X (Twitter) are banned in Burma. Police have sought bribes from individuals using a virtual private network (VPN) to access social media sites even though VPN use is legal.

Burma has  limited and/or inadequate healthcare and emergency medical resources  due to critical staffing shortages in the public sector health workforce. Importation of medical supplies, including medicine, into Burma is not consistent and medical prescriptions and over-the-counter medicine may not be available.

Burma’s military conscription law was first introduced in 2010 but historically was not widely implemented. The military regime officially implemented the law in April 2024. In general, Burmese males aged 18 to 35 and Burmese females aged 18 to 27 will need to register for military service and report for duty if ordered by regime authorities. Burmese males aged 18 to 45 and Burmese females aged 18 to 35 in specific expert/professional occupations must serve if called upon by the regime. For more information, please refer to the Myanmar People’s Military Service Law (State Peace and Development Council Law No. 27/2010), also known as the Public Military Service Law. The military regime may refuse to acknowledge U.S.-Burmese dual nationals’ U.S. citizenship, prevent their departure from Burma, and/or conscript them into the military. U.S.-Burmese nationals should consider this issue before traveling to Burma.

Humber International

Two women are engaged in a discussion, with one explaining something on a laptop to the other, inside a bright and modern room. This scene at the International Spirituality and Wellness Centre represents a supportive environment where international students and staff collaborate on well-being and academic success.

Health Care at Humber

Health Insurance

To ensure that all international students at Humber have access to basic health care while studying at Humber, health care insurance is mandatory for all international students. For all full-time, fee-paying, international students, the cost of this basic health care insurance is included within the tuition fees.

Coverage Upon Arrival

Travel insurance.

Humber coverage is effective only from the first day of classes, not from your date of arrival in Canada . Therefore, if you arrive before the start of classes, it is strongly recommended that you purchase travel insurance, including health care insurance, to cover yourself until the first official day of classes.

Coverage While You Are at Humber

International students.

International students at Humber are covered by two insurance plans:

  • International OHIP Alternative/Morcare
  • IGNITE Extended Health and Dental

International students are covered under the college health insurance plan from the first day of classes. The insurance fee is pro-rated based on the semester you begin your studies, i.e., September, January or May. The health care insurance is a basic package that is subject to change on an annual basis. It is important to emphasize that not all health conditions are covered.

Please note: Returning students who opt to take the Fall term (September) off will not be covered until the semester they return to school.

Review Your Coverage

International students are strongly urged to review their coverage information and purchase additional insurance coverage as appropriate. If you have any questions, please contact a Humber International Student Advisor (ISA) in the International Office.

This health insurance coverage is for international students only. It does not include spouses or children. If you have a spouse and/or dependents, you may wish to pay a supplemental fee and purchase insurance. Arrangements for adding family members are made directly with Morcare, our health insurance provider. The option to add family members will not be available until the start of the semester. A link will appear on the landing page at We Speak Student for a limited time.

The Humber Health Centre

Health & Counselling services at Humber are confidential and available to all registered students. Our goal is to promote student success by providing care that supports well-being.

The opt-out period is available every September for Fall intake and January for Winter intake (Students who had International OHIP alternative health insurance during the Fall semester are not eligible for Winter semester opt-out, OHIP opt outs are only offered for Fall and Winter intakes.)

Best Travel Insurance Companies

The best travel insurance companies offer comprehensive coverage options for a wide range of people and needs. For this guide, we looked at coverage options, customizability, and the best companies for specific situations, such as pre-existing conditions.

Here are Business Insider's picks for the best travel insurance companies in 2024.

Nationwide Travel Insurance

Nationwide is of the largest players in the travel insurance space, offering nearly endless options for any customer on the travel spectrum, including annual travel insurance plans which can offer frequent travelers the flexibility to "set it and forget it" on their travel insurance coverage.

Nationwide Essential also offers some of the most affordable policies in the market compared to similar plans from competitors, which makes it a great pick for just about anyone. Buyers can discuss bundling options as Nationwide also sells homeowners, auto, pet, and other insurance products. Its travel insurance quoting is just as easy as it has been with other Nationwide insurance products.

Read our Nationwide travel insurance review .

AXA Assistance USA

AXA offers consumers a great option for no-stress travel insurance: low-priced plans, generous coverage limits on key categories including primary insurance on lost luggage, and up to 150% reimbursement for qualifying trip cancellations.

While add-ons are limited and rental car coverage is not included by default on cheaper plans, AXA is a perfect fit for travelers who don't plan to drive (or who already hold a travel credit card with rental car coverage), and don't need any additional bells and whistles.

Read our AXA Assistance USA travel insurance review .

Travel Guard

AIG is well-known insurance provider, and a great fit for travelers who want to ensure that they can get their money back in the event of canceled or interrupted travel plans.

While the company's policies can be pricey compared to its competitors, the high medical and evacuation limits make AIG a solid choice for older travelers who value peace of mind and simplicity over highly customizable plans that may be bolstered with medical upgrades.

Read our AIG Travel Guard travel insurance review .

C&F Travel Insured

While every travel insurance company has negative reviews about its claims process, C&F Travel Insured 's claims process has a consistent stream of positive reviews. One customer wrote that C&F processed a claim within 48 hours. Additionally, C&F regularly responds to customer reviews within one business week, making reviews a consistent way to reach the company.

Additionally, in C&F's fine print, it mentions that any claims that take more than 30 days to pay out will begin to accrue interest at 9% APY.

C&F's reputation isn't the only thing to speak highly of. It offers an array of add-ons uncommon in the travel insurance industry, such as Interruption for Any Reason insurance and CFAR coverage for annual plans. C&F also offers discounts for children on its Protector Edge plan and free coverage on its Protector plan.

Read our C&F Travel Insured review .

Tin Leg Travel Insurance

Tin Leg is a great fit for travelers with medical issues in particular. Seven of Tin Leg's eight travel plans include coverage for pre-existing conditions as long as you purchase your policy within 15 days of your initial trip payment.

Thanks to coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as well as for potential COVID-19 infection while traveling, this company offers some of the best financial investment options for travelers who are or will be exposed to higher health risks and issues.

Read our Tin Leg travel insurance review .

WorldTrips Travel Insurance

WorldTrips has affordable premiums, highly customizable add-ons, and generous coverage for core categories of travel insurance. All this makes it a great option for digital nomads, students studying abroad and backpackers.

However, travelers should keep in mind that plans are not particularly flexible, and coverage amounts are limited unless you plan ahead to pay for the areas and amounts that you need.

Read our WorldTrips travel insurance review .

Trawick International Travel Insurance

Trawick offers low premiums across its five plans, most of which offer coverage for pre-existing conditions. You'll find robust medical travel insurance that can help higher-risk and anxious travelers find peace of mind while on the road. This company also offers high medical evacuation coverage limits, up to $1,000,000.

Read our Trawick travel insurance review .

Travelex Travel Insurance

Travelex offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex America plan is meant for trips limited to the U.S., but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the U.S. for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Read our Travelex Travel Insurance review .

World Nomads Travel Insurance

World Nomads distinguishes itself from others by covering over 300 sports and activities, from skydiving to golf. Additionally, its one of the few travel insurance companies that allow you to purchase after departing for your destination. However, you'll have a 72-hour waiting period before coverage kicks in.

That said, World Nomads doesn't have the highest coverage limits compared to its competitors on this list, travel medical insurance capping out at $100,000. It also isn't the most flexible provider, only providing two plans to choose from with no options for pre-existing condition coverage. Yet, World Nomads still stands out for its sports coverage and post-departure coverage.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about how much emergency medical care while traveling will cost, even in the most remote corners of the globe. This coverage will often come in tandem with emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. You may also look for cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason options, which will reimburse you for a percentage of your nonrefundable fees, but expands the covered reasons you can cancel a trip. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance companies here.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away. Also, check websites that field customer reviews like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and InsureMyTrip , to see how well a company responds to customer requests.

Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

For example, to get coverage for a canceled trip due to work, many travel insurance companies require that you've been with that company for at least a year.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering. While the ratings are important, you should also look at whether or not a company responds to customer complaints.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy — what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared. At the very least, you should have the terms readily available while you're on your trip.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Your insurance company may even have a 24/7 assistance hotline that can walk you through an emergency during your trip, even issues that don't involve claims.

When a problem arises. you'll want to document as much as possible, in case you need proof when filing a claim. Ask for receipts and invoices when possible.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, Business Insider evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award five stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2023 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

Best Travel Insurance FAQs

There isn't one best travel insurance company; there are many great providers on the travel insurance market today. Our overall winner was Nationwide for its breadth of coverage options. AIG Travel Guard, AXA, Berkshire Hathaway, Tin Leg, WorldTrips and Trawick also made the cut. The best pick for you will depend on what features you value the most, like a low premium or high coverage limits.

While coverage varies by policy, common exclusions often include pre-existing medical conditions (unless you have purchased a waiver), accidents caused by high-risk activities if not specifically covered (e.g., skydiving, scuba diving), travel for medical procedures, and events known before purchasing the policy (e.g., traveling during a pandemic). Always read your policy carefully to understand the exclusions.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your total trip cost, so it could vary widely depending on where you're traveling and the length of your trip. Your age, the number of people in your group, and other factors can also influence how much you'll pay.

Yes, travel insurance typically offers some coverage of canceled flights, but if this benefit is important to you, make sure you read the fine print of your policy to make sure it offers adequate reimbursement. If you think you may need to cancel your travel plans, you should consider purchasing cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance .

The right amount of travel insurance depends on your trip, but $100,000 should be sufficient for most travel plans. You may want more coverage for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation coverage.

If you like to travel in style, one of this card’s top perks is unlimited complimentary access for you and two guests at more than 1,300 airport and travel lounges. That’s huge if you don’t like the buzzkill that comes with not being able to share the finer things with your travel companions.

It’s worth noting that this card comes with a higher annual fee than most others, and you need excellent credit to qualify. But the rewards it comes with (specifically, that annual miles bonus and travel credit) will quickly make that fee pay for itself. The benefits quickly outweigh the fee as well, and include 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months, equal to $750 in travel.

The rewards rate structure includes 10 miles for every dollar spent on hotels and rental cars that were booked through Capital One Travel, 5 miles for every dollar spent on flights booked through Capital One Travel, and 2 miles per dollar on all other purchases.

5. Best for Everyday Rewards: American Express Gold Card

American Express Gold Card

  • Intro offer: 60,000 points after you spend $6,000 in eligible purchases within the first six months of card membership
  • What to note: While this card does have a higher annual fee than most, it offers a generous rewards structure and welcome bonus, as well as no foreign transaction fees

This card is great for racking up dining and grocery rewards, which are things everyone uses on a regular basis, especially if your travel volume is on the lower end. So if you’re a foodie, you’ll love the incentive to dine out more often than usual.

While it does have a hefty $250 annual fee, this card also comes with an introductory offer of 60,000 membership points after spending $6,000 in the first six months of card membership. Its points-earning ability includes 4 points for each dollar spent on dining at restaurants and US supermarkets (up to the first $25,000 in purchases per calendar year; then 1 point per dollar) and 3 points for every dollar spent on flights booked directly with an airline or with Amex Travel.

Other perks include a statement credit of up to $120 annual for dining, up to $120 in annual Uber Cash, and up to $100 in hotel credits, all of which would prove beneficial when using the card while traveling.

There are two main types of travel credit cards: cobranded hotel and airline cards and transferable-points bank cards. With both these cards, you’ll typically get a large sign-up bonus in the form of rewards points and perks that will offset several years’ worth of the annual fee.

Transferable-points cards allow you to earn rewards points on everyday purchases like dining and groceries, which ultimately go to your stockpile of points to eventually put toward travel.

According to Torres, key features of travel cards include sign-up bonuses for quick rewards; the ability to earning points across spending categories, including travel and everyday expenses; and flexible redemption options. When comparing cards, you should consider perks like airport lounge access, travel insurance, and statement credits for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.

“If you can make the most of the rewards and perks offered by the card, it can be a savvy financial move, regardless of your travel frequency,” says Jannese Torres, host of the Yo Quiero Dinero podcast and author of Financially Lit!: The Modern Latina’s Guide to Level Up Your Dinero & Become Financially Poderosa . “Ultimately, it's about aligning the card’s features with your lifestyle and financial goals to make the most of your spending, whether you’re a frequent flyer or an occasional traveler.”

Even if your total annual travel is on the lower end, you might think about snagging a travel credit card if you find yourself booking airfare and hotel stays a few times a year, says personal finance expert Nicole Lapin , who also hosts Money Rehab podcast.

“These cards can be great for earning rewards faster on travel spending, and even if you’re not jet-setting often, using one for daily expenses to collect points or miles for an occasional lavish getaway can still be a smart move,” she says. “It’s like putting away a little extra for a future vacation every time you shop.”

Generally speaking, as with any credit card, it also makes sense to consider a travel credit card if your finances are in good standing and it would benefit your travel plans . Experts universally agree that everyone should have some type of rewards credit card, assuming they have an appropriate credit score and can pay the card off in full every month. The decision to get a travel credit card hinges on various factors, including how much you spend, the card’s rewards structure, and whether the benefits outweigh any associated fees, Torres says.

According to Lapin, you should look for a travel credit card that offers a solid rewards rate on your spending.

Sign up bonus: Look for a juicy sign-up bonus and perks that suit your travel style, she says. “Key features might include things like no foreign transaction fees, comprehensive travel insurance, and freebies like airport-lounge access or credits for Global Entry and TSA PreCheck. But be cautious of cards with unreasonable minimum-spending requirements to earn sign-up bonuses, Torres says. “Make sure you can comfortably meet the spending threshold without overspending or accruing unnecessary debt,” she says.

Rewards program: In that same vein, though, consider a rewards program with perks you will actually use—if you regularly fly in and out of an airport that doesn’t have a lounge, then a premium card with lounge access probably shouldn’t be a priority. “Other red flags include restrictive redemption options that tie you to one airline or hotel chain, unless you’re totally okay with that limitation,” Lapin says.

However, you’ll also want to avoid cards with limited redemption options or complex rewards structures that could make it challenging to maximize your rewards, and steer clear of cards with high foreign transaction fees, especially if you frequently travel internationally, Torres says: “These fees can quickly diminish the value of your rewards when using the card abroad.”

Annual fees: While many travel cards will come with an annual fee, they also typically come with a sign-up bonus worth far more than that fee, making it easily pay for itself. It’s also key to zero in on your own travel habits, so if you’re flying a specific airline multiple times a year, it can make sense to get a branded card for that airline.

Airline perks: Some airline credit cards also offer free checked bags as a benefit for holding the card, which can be a huge advantage to those who typically check bags, as this can save you around $40 per bag, per leg of your trip.

Ultimately, “balance annual fees with benefits, prioritize cards with no foreign transaction fees for international travel, and explore additional perks like concierge services,” Torres says.

At first glance, a high annual fee can send people running from signing up for a travel credit card. Experts often see them as green flags instead of red one, however, assuming you get the value out of them in points and perks. Even a no-annual-fee travel card that has no foreign transaction fees can be worthwhile for a single trip abroad, considering that foreign transaction fees can otherwise add 2% to 3% to the price of every international purchase.

“In certain cases, a high annual fee on a travel credit card can be justified by the valuable perks and benefits it offers,” Torres says. “For frequent travelers who prioritize convenience and luxury, these cards often provide access to airport lounges, elite status with airlines and hotels, and comprehensive travel insurance coverage, enhancing the overall travel experience. “

Additionally, cards with high annual fees may offer generous rewards rates, lucrative sign-up bonuses, and flexible redemption options, allowing cardholders to accumulate points or miles quickly and redeem them for premium travel rewards, Torres says.

Cards with annual fees also tend to have other big benefits, such as travel insurance, as well as some niche benefits on certain cards, for example, statement credits at Saks Fifth Avenue, Uber, or Equinox.

“Just remember to align the card with your actual travel habits and financial goals, and calculate whether you’ll use enough perks to offset any fees,” Lapin says. “Choosing the right travel credit card can really help make your travels more enjoyable and a bit more economical.”

International student travel insurance premiums cheaper in India: Future-proof your overseas studies

I ndian students going abroad for higher education should opt for an international student travel insurance for comprehensive protection. It provides coverage for unexpected situations, such as study interruptions, sponsor protection and is issued for a longer time period, unlike traditional travel policies that are issued for up to 180 days. They should purchase the policy from India as it is much more affordable than buying it abroad.

A student travel insurance plan is designed for those between 16-40 years, enrolled in full-time courses at an accredited college or university and who have valid passports. It offers coverage for one to two years, with the option for renewal. This renewal option aligns perfectly with the extended timelines of academic programmes and offers a continuous safety net throughout a student’s course tenure.

Wider coverage

A student travel insurance policy is designed to safeguard students from unexpected expenses that may arise during their educational journey overseas such as baggage loss, flight delays, medical costs, passport/laptop theft, and legal fees. Such a policy also covers mental health issues and maternity which are not covered by the regular travel insurance. International student travel insurance can be extended or renewed to accommodate changes in the student’s academic plans. The policy is renewable up to five years while a travel policy can be renewed up to one year only.

Beyond the tangible benefits of student travel insurance like safeguarding policyholder’s health and possessions, it also offers compassionate visit provisions, which cover emergency travel expenses for family members to the student’s host country or the student visiting their family, says Rakesh Goyal, director, Probus Insurance Broker. Additionally, such insurance plans offer round-the-clock assistance services, including help with language barriers, locating healthcare providers, and legal support. “Regular travel insurance may not offer these specific benefits. Students should opt for international student travel insurance for comprehensive coverage tailored to their unique needs while studying abroad,” he says.

Sponsor protection is an invaluable feature, particularly for those who rely on financial support from sponsors back in India. Manas Kapoor, business head, Travel Insurance, Policybazaar.com, says in the event of an unforeseen crisis, these policies can ensure that the sponsors’ financial contributions to the student’s education are safeguarded, reducing the stress on both policyholder and their sponsors. “Some student travel insurance policies even provide the option for a refund of tuition fees, covering interruptions in policyholder’s studies due to unforeseen events,” he says.

Premium and coverage

The premium depends on factors such as the country of travel (USA/Canada vs rest of world), duration of coverage, the level of coverage, the student’s age and any additional benefits or riders chosen. Students should buy the policy from India as it is less than one-third of the price they would have to pay abroad. The sum insured ranges between $50,000 to $1 million and students should choose an appropriate sum insured that will give them adequate protection during the entire duration of the stay.

US EB-5 Real Estate: Benefits to foreign investors for a permanent residence in America

While cost is a major factor in this insurance, it is always advisable to get the best coverage possible. Sharad Bajaj, COO, InsuranceDekho, says the ideal sum insured depends on factors such as the cost of healthcare in the destination country, the student’s medical history, and the level of coverage desired. “It is advisable to opt for a sum insured that adequately covers potential medical expenses, including emergency medical evacuation and repatriation, without being excessive.”

Before buying a student travel insurance policy, the student must check with the university enrolled if they have any specific insurance mandates. For instance, some universities abroad would require medical and accidental cover and some might require cover for drug abuse, mental rehabilitation, cancer screening, etc. In case a student has a pre-existing disease, he should give high preference to pre-existing coverages and their conditions, limitations, or exclusions applicable.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Aug. 24, 2024

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Climate change

Ms. Harris has supported the Biden administration’s climate efforts , including legislation that provided hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits and rebates for renewable energy and electric vehicles.

“It is clear the clock is not just ticking, it is banging,” she said in a speech last year , referring to increasingly severe and frequent disasters spurred by climate change. “And that is why, one year ago, President Biden and I made the largest climate investment in America’s history.”

During her 2020 presidential campaign, she emphasized the need for environmental justice , a framework that calls for policies to address the adverse effects that climate change has on poor communities and people of color. She has emphasized that as vice president as well.

In 2019, Ms. Harris, then a senator, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced legislation that would have evaluated environmental rules and laws by how they affected low-income communities. It would have also established an independent Office of Climate and Environmental Justice Accountability and created a “senior adviser on climate justice” within several federal agencies. In 2020, Ms. Harris introduced a more sweeping version of the bill. None of the legislation was passed.

Ms. Harris was tasked with leading the Biden administration’s efforts to secure voting rights legislation, a job she asked for . The legislation — which went through several iterations but was ultimately blocked in the Senate — would have countered voting restrictions in Republican-led states, limited gerrymandering and regulated campaign finance more strictly.

This year, she met with voting rights advocates and described a strategy that included creating a task force on threats to election workers and challenging state voting restrictions in court.

She has condemned former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In a speech in 2022 marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, she said that day had showed “what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful.” She added, “What was at stake then, and now, is the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: by we the people, all the people.”

Economic policy

In campaign events this year, Ms. Harris has promoted the Biden administration’s economic policies, including the infrastructure bill that Mr. Biden signed, funding for small businesses, a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that capped the cost of insulin for people on Medicare and student debt forgiveness.

She indicated at an event in May that the administration’s policies to combat climate change would also bring economic benefits by creating jobs in the renewable energy industry. At another event , she promoted more than $100 million in Energy Department grants for auto parts manufacturers to pivot to electric vehicles, which she said would “help to keep our auto supply chains here in America.”

As a senator, she introduced legislation that would have provided a tax credit of up to $6,000 for middle- and low-income families, a proposal she emphasized during her presidential campaign as a way to address income inequality.

Immigration

One of Ms. Harris’s mandates as vice president has been to address the root causes of migration from Latin America, like poverty and violence in migrants’ home countries. Last year, she announced $950 million in pledges from private companies to support Central American communities. Similar commitments made previously totaled about $3 billion.

In 2021, she visited the U.S.-Mexico border and said : “This issue cannot be reduced to a political issue. We’re talking about children, we’re talking about families, we are talking about suffering.”

More recently, she backed a bipartisan border security deal that Mr. Biden endorsed but Mr. Trump, by urging Republican lawmakers to kill it , effectively torpedoed. The legislation would have closed the border if crossings reached a set threshold, and it would have funded thousands of new border security agents and asylum officers. “We are very clear, and I think most Americans are clear, that we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it,” Ms. Harris said in March .

Israel and Gaza

Ms. Harris called in March for an “immediate cease-fire” in Gaza and described the situation there as a “humanitarian catastrophe.” She said that “the threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated” but also that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”

In an interview later that month , she emphasized her opposition to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, the city in southern Gaza to which more than a million people had fled. “I have studied the maps,” she said. “There’s nowhere for those folks to go, and we’re looking at about 1.5 million people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them.”

She has said on multiple occasions that she supports a two-state solution.

Racial justice

Racial justice was a theme of Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign. In a memorable debate exchange in 2019 , she denounced Mr. Biden’s past work with segregationist senators and opposition to school busing mandates.

She has called for ending mandatory minimum sentences, cash bail and the death penalty, which disproportionately affect people of color.

Amid the protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, she was one of the senators who introduced the Justice in Policing Act, which would have made it easier to prosecute police officers, created a national registry of police misconduct and required officers to complete training on racial profiling. It was not passed.

Her record as a prosecutor also came into play during her presidential campaign. Critics noted that as attorney general of California, she had generally avoided stepping in to investigate police killings.

Okay, Hear Us Out... International Student Insurance

It's finally time.

After over two years of remote, hybrid, or in-person learning in their home country, many students are very ready to get out there and travel abroad for school.

Where will your study abroad trip take you this year? The United Kingdom? Australia? China? Not to be overly dramatic, but anyone who's done it before knows that studying abroad can truly change your life. The immersion into a new country and culture and the lifelong friendships are just the tip of the iceberg.

And while you're having the time of your life studying and exploring, it's smart to be aware of what could go wrong and how you can prepare. Purchasing international student health insurance can be an important but easily overlooked step in your travel preparations.

With many programs, schools, and visas requiring health insurance for international students, a health insurance plan created for students may be just the thing you need to help cover those unexpected expenses. You can access the online renewal system through the WorlTrips Student Zone or through the email that you will receive before your policy expires. You can renew your plan for a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of 4 years, as long as you meet the Student Secure plan eligibility requirements.

The main differences between the four levels of StudentSecure medical insurance plans are the policy maximums, deductibles, and benefits. The Elite option provides the highest policy maximum of $5M per policy period and the lowest deductible of $25 per injury or illness. It also provides the most comprehensive benefits, such as vaccination coverage, maternity coverage, and intercollegiate sports coverage. The Select option provides a policy maximum of $600K per policy period and a deductible of $35 per injury or illness. It also provides some additional benefits, such as mental health coverage and personal liability coverage. The Budget option provides a policy maximum of $500K per policy period and a deductible of $45 per injury or illness. It also provides some basic benefits, such as emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. The Smart option provides the lowest policy maximum of $200K per policy period and the highest deductible of $50 per injury or illness. It also provides the least benefits, such as accidental death and dismemberment and terrorism coverage.

StudentSecure travel insurance provides benefits for eligible expenses related to emergency situations that occur during your policy period. The travel benefits include emergency medical evacuation, repatriation of remains, accidental death and dismemberment, terrorism coverage, trip interruption, lost checked luggage, and more. The amount of travel benefits depends on the plan option you choose.

The student secure plan covers injuries and illnesses resulting from participation in leisure sports and activities that are not organized or sponsored by your school. Some examples of covered sports and activities are basketball, soccer, tennis, hiking, skiing, surfing, and yoga. However, some sports and activities are excluded from coverage, such as professional or semi-professional sports, contact sports, extreme sports, and motor sports.

The WorldTrips student secure plan meets the J-1 visa requirements by providing medical benefits for sicknesses and injuries, emergency medical evacuation, repatriation of remains, accidental death and dismemberment, and medical assistance services. The plan also meets or exceeds the minimum coverage amounts required by the U.S. Department of State for J-1 visa holders.

The optional sports rider is an additional benefit that covers up to $5K per injury resulting from intercollegiate, interscholastic, intramural, or club sports. You can add this rider to your plan by paying an extra premium of $1.25 per person per month. You can add this rider at the time of application or during renewal.

The student secure plan covers vaccinations up to $150 per year for Select and Elite plans only. The plan also covers mental health disorders up to a certain amount per year depending on the level of coverage. For example, the Elite plan covers up to $2,500 per year for inpatient treatment and up to $50 per day for outpatient treatment.

The student secure health insurance plan covers pre-existing conditions after a waiting period that varies depending on the level of coverage. The Elite and Select plans have a 6-month waiting period, the Budget plan has a 12-month waiting period, and the Smart plan does not cover pre-existing conditions at all.

On American Visitors Insurance students can buy US student insurance using a paper application form either on monthly basics or yearly. Students should complete and the Student Secure proposal form and make the payment. On receiving the completed Student Secure insurance application form and the payment, the Student Secure insurance policy will be emailed to the customer.

There are several reasons to consider an international student insurance plan like StudentSecure for your overseas studies:

To Meet Visa Requirements: Most countries require international students to possess a valid student visa. Some visas require proof of insurance that meets specific requirements. StudentSecure meets the insurance requirements of most visas, including the J-1 visa . As a StudentSecure policyholder, you will have access to a visa letter you can use as proof of coverage. You can download your visa letter through the Member Portal, where you can conveniently manage your policy online.

To Meet Your Study Abroad Program or School Requirements: Your program or university may require you to have valid student health insurance that meets requirements. Many programs and schools provide their own insurance plans, but often times allow students to purchase alternate coverage that meets requirements. Upon purchase of a StudentSecure policy, we will help you provide proof of coverage that meets requirements to your program or school. Simply submit a request for a waiver form and/or visa letter to [email protected] . We will send completed copies of the form(s) to you and your school.

To Cover Unexpected Medical Expenses: Your regular health insurance may not provide adequate coverage while you are outside of your home country and very few plans pay for medical evacuation .

Please note that International student insurance plans are different from a student travel insurance plan because the policy duration is much longer - an academic year or longer. international student travel insurance does not necessarily include an adequate level of health insurance to cover your medical expenses as an overseas student in the United States.

The cost of medical expenses in the United States is extremely high without health insurance and there is no access to universal health care such as you might find in your home country or in countries where there is a reciprocal agreement. Depending on the type of visa you have, or the college or university you attend, there may be a requirement for you to have a certain type of international student health insurance policy.

We will normally collect personal data where we need the information to provide you with our services / perform a contract with you, where the processing is in our legitimate interests and not overridden by your data protection interests or fundamental rights and freedoms, or with your consent.

In some cases, we may use your personal data for a legal obligation, e.g., in order to complete “know your customer” and money laundering checks before taking you on as a new client.

If we ask you to provide personal information to comply with a legal requirement or to perform a contract with you, we will make this clear at the relevant time and advise you whether the provision of your personal information is mandatory (as well as of the possible consequences if you do not provide your personal information). You are under no obligation to provide personal data to us. However, if you should choose to withhold requested data, we may not be able to provide you with certain services.

Similarly, if we collect and use your personal information in reliance on our legitimate interests (or those of any third party), we will make clear to you at the relevant time what those legitimate interests are.

If you are a UK resident, we may collect and use your personal information, including sensitive personal information, on the basis of the insurance derogation in the UK Data Protection Act 2018.

If you are an EU resident, we may collect and use your personal information, including sensitive personal information, on the basis of the substantial public interest of insurance purposes, as regulated in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

If you have questions about or need further information concerning the legal basis on which we collect and use your personal information, please contact us using the contact details provided under the “Contact Us" section below.

Who is your personal data shared with?

We may disclose your personal information with the following categories of recipients.

  • To any competent law enforcement body, regulatory, government agency, court or other third party where we believe disclosure is necessary (i) as a matter of applicable law or regulation, (ii) to exercise, establish or defend our legal rights, or (iii) to protect your vital interests or those of any other person;
  • To a potential buyer (and its agents and advisers) in connection with any proposed purchase, merger or acquisition of any part of our business, provided that we inform the buyer it must use your personal information only for the purposes disclosed in this privacy policy;
  • To any other person with your consent to the disclosure.

We do not sell (or exchange) your personal information for monetary compensation.

If you are a US resident, from time to time we may share your personal information with third parties for a third party’s own direct benefit and this type of sharing may be considered a sale under certain applicable laws. For more information on the type of information we may share in this manner, please contact us.

We have taken appropriate safeguards to require that your personal data will remain protected in accordance with this privacy policy. We have also taken appropriate  safeguards with our third party service providers and partners.

How long is personal information retained?

We will keep your personal data on our records for as long as we have an ongoing legitimate business need to do so. This includes providing you with a service you have requested from us or to comply with applicable legal, tax or accounting requirements. It also includes keeping your data for so long as there is any possibility that you or we may wish to bring a legal claim concerning our services, or where we are required to keep your data for legal or regulatory reasons. Please contact us using the contact details provided under the “Contact Us" section below should you require further information on our record retention procedures.

ARBITRATION AND CLASS ACTION WAIVER

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING SECTION CAREFULLY BECAUSE IT REQUIRES YOU TO ARBITRATE CERTAIN DISPUTES AND CLAIMS AND LIMITS THE MANNER IN WHICH YOU CAN SEEK RELIEF FROM COMPANY. Excluding claims for injunctive or other equitable relief, for all other claims related to the Website, including any goods or services purchased through the Website, any dispute or controversy arising out of or relating to this Agreement, including without limitation, any and all disputes, claims (whether in tort, contract, statutory or otherwise) or disagreements concerning the existence, breach, interpretation, application or termination of this Agreement shall be resolved by final and binding arbitration pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act and in accordance with the JAMS Inc. Comprehensive Arbitration Rules & Procedures then in effect. There shall be no right or authority for any claims to be arbitrated on a class action basis. The arbitration shall take place in Fairhope, Alabama or at the option of the party seeking relief, by telephone, online, or via written submissions alone; however such election shall not prohibit Company from attending such an arbitration in person. Said arbitration shall be administered by JAMS. The arbitral tribunal (“Tribunal”) shall be composed of one arbitrator, who shall be independent and impartial. If the parties fail to agree on the arbitrator within twenty (20) calendar days after the initiation of an arbitration hereunder, JAMS shall appoint the arbitrator. The arbitration shall be conducted in the English language. The decision of the arbitrator will be final and binding on the parties, subject to all rights of appeal allowed by JAMS. Judgment on any award(s) rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. The arbitrator shall have the authority to determine arbitrability of any disputes arising out of or relating to this Agreement. Nothing in this Section shall prevent either party from seeking immediate injunctive relief from any court of competent jurisdiction, and any such request shall not be deemed incompatible with the agreement to arbitrate or a waiver of the right to arbitrate. The parties undertake to keep confidential all awards in their arbitration, together with all confidential information, all materials in the proceedings created for the purpose of the arbitration and all other documents produced by the other party in the proceedings and not otherwise in the public domain, save and to the extent that disclosure may be required of a party by legal duty, to protect or pursue a legal right or to enforce or challenge an award in legal proceedings before a court or other judicial authority. The arbitrator shall award all fees and expenses, including reasonable attorney’s fees, to the prevailing party. Any judgment rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court of competent jurisdiction.

You may choose to opt out of the agreement to arbitrate by mailing a written opt-out notice (“Notice”) to Company. The Notice must be postmarked no later than thirty (30) days after the date you accept these T&C for the first time. The Notice must be mailed to: Trawick International, Inc., Post Office Box 2284 Fairhope, Alabama USA 36533, to the attention of General Counsel. This procedure is the only mechanism by which you can opt out of the agreement to arbitrate. Opting out of the agreement to arbitrate has no effect on any other parts of this Agreement, or any previous or future arbitration agreements that you have entered into with Company or its affiliates.
