The tour of the old town was peppered with interesting and surprising background information and anecdotes. Finally, there was a potpourri of extraordinary tapas with different wines in an exclusive setting. All in all, an all-round successful evening. Many thanks for that :-)

GetYourGuide

This experience was the best that we have had in a European city! The tour around Valencia was great and made us want to see more. The tasting was the perfect way to try some wonderful bites and very well-paired wines! This may seem like a lot of superlatives, but they are all accurate. Bogi, our outstanding guide gave us an experience of a lifetime!

What an amazing online experience! My girlfriend and I are big foodies and with us being unable to go to restaurants at the moment, this was a fantastic alternative. Really felt comfortable on a video call with the hosts, Lara and Eduardo. They did a great job at guiding us through everything. Definitely recommend!

Joseph (United Kingdom)

I cannot recommend this tour highly enough! Sofia was a spectacular tour guide and her love for Valencia is contagious. The stories and details of the tour were shared with such passion. The tapas and wine in the 11th century venue was amazing! Thank you SO much for sharing your city in such a special way. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

6 Best Tours in Valencia: Paella, Wine, Silk, and the REAL Holy Grail

You would easily assume the best place to experience Spanish culture is the capital Madrid, or even Barcelona with its fanciful art nouveau architecture. I thought the same, until I visited Valencia , Spain’s third largest city.

Valencia is the birthplace of the iconic Spanish rice dish, paella; it was once Spain’s wealthiest city thanks to its position at the end of the Silk Road; and its historic cathedral houses the infamous Holy Grail.

Yep, Valencia is the city to visit if you’re after a massive cultural download.

Or want to live forever .

With the help of a few knowledgeable tour guides, I sampled Valencia’s best wine and paella; shopped for authentic, locally made souvenirs; and delved into the city’s motley history, uncovering the real stories behind the Holy Grail and the role of silk in Valencia’s glorious golden century .

After a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and grail-sipping, I found the 6 best tours in Valencia that will give you a grasp on authentic Spanish culture.

Try them out on your next visit to Spain.

Note: most small group tours in Valencia run in English and Spanish. Tours are split into two groups if there’s enough people, otherwise, the guide explains content in English then repeats in Spanish. If you can’t understand either, I don’t know how you’re reading this article. But you can try anyway.

1. Day Trip to Albufera National Park

For a quieter tour with a private guide all to yourself, you can’t go past a Withlocals tour in Valencia . I was hungry for nature and world-class paella, so booked a 5-hour Day Trip to Albufera National Park , with local guide, Marcos.

Marcos picked us up from our Airbnb apartment and set off to Albufera , the largest lake in Spain, primarily used for fish farming and rice production. Along the way, Marcos explained the region’s history and current fish and rice farming practices.

Paella fact: Traditional Valencian paella is served with chicken, venison, and rabbit. Seafood paella was only invented for tourists!

We made a few stops to admire the silky-smooth lake, colourful rice fields, small church, and bushlands leading to the ocean. For a closer look, we visited a local fishing village where 4 th generation fish-farmer, Rosa, took us for a 30-minute boat cruise around the lake. The experience was incredibly peaceful and relaxing, with colourful dragonflies gliding just above the water and shy birdlife feeding in the tall reeds.

best tours valencia

For lunch, Marcos took us to Restaurante Bon Aire , the 2018 winner of the International Paella Contest, where he helped us order Valencian salad and vegetable paella, then left us to enjoy our lunch. It was pretty remarkable sitting out on the terrace, eating the best paella I’ve ever tasted while overlooking the rice fields where it was grown. I spent the rest of my time in Valencia trying to find a paella as good, but none came close!

The tour price includes lunch and the boat ride

2. Walking Tour of the Old Town

To get a feel for Valencia’s enthralling history that dates back to the Roman era and includes 500 years under Arab rule, I booked a 2.5-hour Guided Tour of the Old Town .

We met our small group and guide, Alejandro, outside City Hall and started with a quick history recap on the city. We then walked to Central Market , the largest indoor fresh produce market in Europe with over 500 stores, where we tasted Valencia’s signature drink, orxata (horchata), paired with long sweet bread-like pastries called fartons , and watched locals go about their weekly shopping.

best tours valencia

Other stops included La Lonja de la Seda , or “the Silk Exchange”, an exquisite 15 th century building that served as the chamber of commerce of the time; Valencia Cathedral ’s exterior, where Alejandro pointed out 3 styles of architecture - gothic, baroque, and romanesque; and Valencia’s oldest church, San Juan del Hospital Church , where we gawked at the city’s only medieval church paintings and ruins of an ancient Roman circus.

The tour price includes a glass orxata and a farton at Central Market and entry to La Lonja de la Seda and San Juan del Hospital church.

3. Made in Valencia Shopping Tour

If you like to buy authentic, locally made souvenirs and gifts, try the brand new 2-hour Shopping Route Tour . Our guide, Denizia, took us to 4 traditional Valencian stores selling silk, hats, chocolate, and fans.

The silk store was located inside Nord Station where owner, Ava, uses the art nouveau station as inspiration to hand-paint silk scarves, clothing, jewellery, and fans. Several designs replicate the station’s mosaics featuring Valencian oranges and flowers, traditional silk dresses, and Albufera landscapes.

best tours valencia

The hat and fan stores are traditional, family businesses that make products on-site to ship across Spain. Sombreros Albero sells every type of hat you could imagine, winter hats, summer hats, heat-resistant hats, and so on. They even had hats to fit my big noggin. Hats here are probably too expensive for a spur-of-the-moment purchase, but if you’re after a fancy new hat, you’ll definitely find it here.

At Abanicos Carbonell , owner, Paula, showed us how to spot the difference between quality, authentic Spanish fans and cheaper, easily-breakable knock-off fans made in China. Apparently 99% of fans sold as Spanish souvenirs are made in China, even the ones with ‘made in Spain’ labels. We marvelled at the intricate designs hand-painted by Paula and her family which start at €10, but most range between €25-40.

best tours valencia

Chocoholics will adore Trufas Martinez , a small chocolate factory selling truffles, hand-painted chocolate masterpieces, and even dairy-free chocolate. We got to try wafer-thin chocolates oddly paired with oil and croutons. I was surprised by how delicious the combination was! Owner, Theresa, shared tips on how to taste good quality chocolate: put it in your mouth, close your eyes, and let it melt to catch all of the flavours. Yum!

best tours valencia

There’s no obligation or pressure to buy at any of the stores visited, the goal is to learn about authentic Spanish products made in Valencia.

4. Wine Tour of Ancient Wineries

My favourite Valencia private tour involved driving through the country side to sample wine on an 8-hour wine tour with local guide, Johan.

Johan picked us up from our Airbnb apartment and drove 1-hour to the Requena-Utiel wine region. Along the way, he explained the history of winemaking in Spain, sharing an important story from the 1800s when French vineyards were attacked by a bug resulting in a boom in demand for Valencian wine. Winemakers in Requena-Utiel used Moorish caves under their homes to produce and store vast quantities.

Our first stop was one such “wine cave” in sleepy village, Requena. We visited the storefront of large vineyard Murviedro 1927 and descended underground to tour the wine cave, seeing stone channels once used to transport wine and giant clay pots used for storage and transportation. We then sampled two wines, a white muscat with a sweet aroma and dry finish, and a red bobal, the most common grape variety in Valencia.

best tours valencia

Next, we visited smaller winery, Vera Estenas , where Johan walked us through the vineyard, pointing out different varieties of grapes before taking us through the factory, some of which dates back to 1876, to explain production methods. Our tour finished with a tasting of two wines, a white la tartana meaning “the late one” because of its late harvest, and a bobal rosé. The rare la tartana is my new favourite Spanish wine.

best tours valencia

After all that wine, we needed to fill our stomachs so stopped at El Vegano for a 3-course lunch and of course, another glass of wine.

5. Route of the Holy Grail Tour

If you’ve ever seen The Da Vinci Code or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade , you’ve probably heard a bit about the Holy Grail, but did you know it’s actually in Valencia? I booked a 2.5-hour Route of the Holy Grail and Religious Art walking tour to see the Holy Grail (The chalice Jesus supposedly drunk from during the last supper) and the city’s other religious relics and art.

The tour visited 3 churches, the highlight being the Valencia Cathedral , home to the Vatican-approved Holy Grail. According to our guide, Raquel, archaeologists have verified the chalice as being from the time period of the last supper and cannot prove it isn’t the very chalice Jesus drank from. The original chalice is quite humble, with decorative gold and jewels later added to the stem and base. The grail isn’t the only relic housed within Valencia Cathedral. Raquel gave us a short tour of the cathedral, stopping to point out notable chapels, artwork, and the un-decomposed arm of St Vincent the Martyr, the patron saint of Valencia. Yep, a dead guy’s arm in a glass box.

best tours valencia

We also visited Valencia’s oldest church, San Juan del Hospital Church , where Raquel explained the allocation of land to church sects, like the Templars, after the crusades; and the Church of Saint Nicholas , where we marvelled at intricate ceiling paintings depicting the lives of Saint Vincent and Saint Nicholas (yes, that’s the same Saint Nick we know as Santa Claus!).

best tours valencia

6. City of Silk Walking Tour

In Valencia, the 15 th century is known as “the golden century” as the city’s economy thrived thanks to its flourishing silk industry. To learn more about Valencia’s golden century, I booked 2.5-hour City of Silk walking tour.

We first visited La Lonja de la Seda to see the building where all deals and transactions, some relating to silk, took place. According to our guide, it was the Wall Street of the 15 th century. Everyone looking to trade in Valencia would have come through this building, and they would have been met with a magnificent display of wealth when they did. The main hall is filled with detailed twisted columns resembling palm trees, and the ceiling was once painted to echo the night sky. Even the basement, which was a prison, has an intricately designed ceiling.

Our guide shed insight into the significance of La Lonja, sharing stories that took place here, like Christopher Columbus’ meeting with traders to argue his case for a voyage to India.

best tours valencia

We also visited a silk store to see examples of exquisite Valencian silk used to make traditional dresses; and the Silk Museum to see examples of machines and tools used in the silk industry 600 years ago as well as samples of machine-made and hand-made silk fabric and clothing.

best tours valencia

The tour price includes entry to La Lonja de la Seda and the Silk Museum.

The Bottom Line

Globalisation and mass tourism have made it possible to visit new countries and cities without really leaving our comfort zones. We can speak our own language, eat in familiar restaurant chains, and basically go about our lives as we would at home.

And that’s a damn crying shame.

I dare say, a crime.

best tours valencia

If you ask me, the best thing about visiting a new city is getting out of your comfort zone, trying new foods, getting immersed in a foreign culture, and learning something fascinating.

These 6 best tours in Valencia do just that.

But be warned, after you’ve had a sip from the Holy Grail, you might just live forever.

So, free up some space on your credit card for a new Valencian hat or fan. You might as well do immortality in style.

15 Best Things to Do in Valencia (Spain)

Valencia has many of the things that attracts tourists to Spain , all in one place: The city has a vibrant old centre, with a knot of little streets and splendid medieval buildings like the UNESCO-listed Lonja de la Seda.

Valencia is also right on the Mediterranean, so you can laze on broad sandy beaches and tuck into delectable cuisine that draws on the sea. This is the home of paella, surely the most famous Spanish dish of all. There are also ultra-modern visitor attractions at the City of the Arts and Sciences, and it all goes to make Valencia one of Spain’s most complete destinations.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Valencia :

1. City of the Arts and Sciences

City of the Arts and Sciences

It can be difficult to wrap your head around the City of the Arts and Sciences. The attraction is a staggering ensemble of ultra-modern structures that are given an ethereal quality by the reflecting pools that surround them.

The whole thing was started in the mid-90s and the finishing touches were made in 2005. Within these gargantuan buildings are cultural venues and first-class family attractions like L’Hemisfèric, a planetarium and IMAX Cinema, or the breathtaking L’Umbracle, a botanical collection of plant species native to Valencia. Book ahead to avoid queues.

Top rated tour :  City of Arts & Sciences Tour with Rooftop Wine & Tapas

2. Oceanogràfic

Oceanogràfic

The star of the City of the Arts and Sciences is this cutting-edge oceanarium that opened in 2003. With 45,000 individual animals from 500 different species, you won’t find another attraction on this scale in Europe.

The aquarium is organised by ten zones, each synthesising a distinct environment, and using real seawater pumped from Valencia’s waterfront. So at the Arctic tank you’ll get to see beluga whales swimming in a spacious and thoughtfully designed tank.

Elsewhere you can spot sand tiger sharks, penguins, walruses, dolphins and sea lions. It all adds up to a day out adults and little guys won’t soon forget.

Tickets are available online: Oceanogràfic Entrance Ticket

3. La Lonja de la Seda

La Lonja de la Seda

This majestic late-15th-century building is a UNESCO site and held as the masterpiece of Valencian Gothic architecture. La Lonja de la Seda is the finest a monument to Valencia’s golden age, when the city was one of Europe’s main centres for trade and culture.

The name means “Silk Exchange”, where traders from far flung pats of the Mediterranean would meet and make deals. Inside you can marvel at the dainty twisting columns of the main hall (sala de contratación) and look up at the incredible detail of the vaulted ceilings. Its tough-looking crenellated outline sits right in front of the city’s central market.

4. Valencia Cathedral

Valencia Cathedral

The city’s solemn Gothic cathedral dates to the 13th and 14th centuries, with renaissance, baroque and neoclassical modifications made over the next few hundred years.  Go inside to see 15th-century renaissance paintings by artists such as the Valencian, Jacomart as well as several from Rome commissioned by Pope Alexander VI.

But the most fascinating part, and perhaps controversial, is the Chapel of the Holy Chalice. At the altar is one of a few chalices claimed to have been used by Jesus to institute the Holy Eucharist at the last supper. This agate vessel has been dated by archaeologists to between the 4th century BC and 1st century AD, but no scientific analysis as yet been made.

Included in : Medieval Valencia 1-Hour Segway Tour

5. El Miguelete

El Miguelete

The cathedral’s octagonal bell-tower graces many postcards sent home from the city. It’s a Valencian gothic construction begun in 1381 and completed just under 50 years later. Originally it stood completely alone from the cathedral, but extensions in the late-1400s brought the two structures together.

If you’re feeling spritely, it’s possible to climb the 207 steps up a slightly precarious stairway to the top for great vistas 50 metres above the city. The big sight at the top is Miguel, the famous bell cast in 1432 and weighing over ten tons.

6. Casco Histórico

Casco Histórico

Like most historic centres in Spanish cities the heart of Valencia is made for wandering. All of the must-see sights in this part of the city are just couple of minutes away from each other.

Between each landmark is a maze of little streets with cafes, restaurants and local amenities or artisan shops.

To beat the heat in summer stop off at a square like Plaza de la Virgen for a cool glass of horchata, a drink made with ground almonds, tigernuts and a variety of grains and flavoured with cinnamon and vanilla.

On the southern side of the old-town seek out the Neo-Mudéjar Plaza de Toros (bullring) and the spectacular ticket hall of the Estació del Nord.

Recommended tour : Essentials and World Heritages Sites Walking Tour

7. Barrio del Carmen

Barrio del Carmen

The northeast side of the old-town is the youngest and most bohemian part of the city. El Carmen took shape in medieval times, situated outside of the 11th-century Moorish walls but within the Christian ones that went up in the 14th-century.

What’s great about this place is the way the palaces next to these cool, shaded alleys have been converted into hip boutiques, bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Calle de Caballeros, which begins at Plaza de la Virgen, is where many nights out in Valencia will end up.

You can also see fragments of Valencia’s late-medieval defences, at Torres de Quart and Torres de Serranos.

8. Jardín del Turia

Jardín del Turia

This astounding park brings you fresh air and relaxation right in the middle of the city. It came about in the 20th century after the River Turia burst its banks in 1957 causing great damage to the city.

The river was diverted and in the 80s its riverbed in the city was turned into nine kilometres of verdant green space. A total of 18 bridges still cross the riverbed, the oldest dating back to the middle ages, and are now just another part of the unusual scenery in the park.

Several landscape architects were drafted in to build these gardens, creating a scene of pine forest, orange groves, palms and paths that lead past sports facilities, play areas and fountains.

9. Central Market

Valencia Central Market

Opposite the Silk Exchange is another prized landmark, the cavernous and palatial Central Market building. Even if you’re just sightseeing here you’ll love the building’s art nouveau metal and glass design.

Despite dating to the early-20th century it blends perfectly with the historic architecture in this part of the old city. And if you do feel like doing some shopping at the market you’ll be in foodie heaven. There are 400 small traders at the market, with 959 selling farm and sea-fresh produce at the best prices in the city.

If there’s a Spanish delicacy you love, like chorizo, jamón ibérico or manchego cheese, this will be your El Dorado.

10. Malvarrosa Beach

Malvarrosa Beach

Within minutes of the old-town you could be sunning yourself on a Mediterranean beach. Malvarrosa is a wide strip of golden sand that stretches for a kilometre along the city’s seafront.

The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for all the amenities it provides, from lifeguard towers , a medical station, drinking fountains and showers, to its easily-navigable ramps and footpaths.

The great news is that won’t have to trudge far for a cold drink or bite to eat as there are permanent restaurants right on the promenade next to the beach.

11. El Saler Beach

El Saler Beach

Malvarrosa is a fine urban beach, but it might be that you want a more natural setting for you day next to the Mediterranean. In which case El Saler is the way to go: the beach starts some way south of Valencia’s port, which you’ll be able to see in the distance.

At 2.6 kilometres in length this beach means peace and privacy as you relax on white sands on the coast of La Albufera Natural Reserve.

Behind you will be little more than sand dunes and pine trees and in front moderate waves and a wash that shelves gently into the sea.

Suggested tour : Valencia: Albufera Jeep and Boat Tour

12. Hire a bike

Valencia Bike Rental

Riding a bike on Spanish roads might seem like a hair-raising experience, but it’s perfectly safe in Valencia’s web of narrow streets, pedestrianised squares, parks and seafront promenades.

You’ll have the freedom to zip around Valencia’s top sights, head to the beach or take easy rides through the Jardín del Turia.

In 2012 the city implemented the Valenbisi bike sharing network, which is subscription-based and aimed mainly at Valencia’s residents. Still, there are numerous rental companies across the city, ilike PassionBike in Carrer de Serrans.

Valencian Paella

If you want best paella in Valencia, get off the beaten track and go to restaurants frequented by Valencians. There are plenty around Malvarrosa, and if possible it will always pay to make reservations.

Paella is probably Spain’s most famous dish, and it was first created right here. Everything that goes into it is local, from the rice grown in vast fields north and south of the city, and even the saffron that flavours the rice.

If you didn’t already know, the dish’s name comes from the large iron pans that it’s cooked and served in. You can pick from the traditional meat variety, with rabbit and snails, or go for the seafood version, with prawns and squid.

14. Parque Gulliver

Parque Gulliver

If you’re walking the Jardín del Turia with little ones then make a stop at this imaginative attraction close to the City of the Arts and Sciences. It’s inspired by the classic work, Gulliver’s Travels, written by Jonathan Swift in the 18th century.

At the park you’ll feel like a Lilliputian, and kids while have a whale of a time scrambling over the giant figure of Gulliver prone on the ground.

There are slides, ramps, stairways and all kinds of little interactive features. Also part of the attraction is a skating area, giant chessboard and a mini-golf course.

15. Las Fallas

Las Fallas de Valencia

This celebrations that take place in Valencia in the build up to St. Joseph’s Day on the 19th of March could be the noisiest and most colourful of any fiesta in Spain.

Las Fallas marks the beginning of spring, and in the past the city’s carpenters would hold bonfires on the night before the 19th in honour of their patron saint. Slowly it developed into the awesome spectacle you can see today, with something special to see every day.

For example every day at two in the town square you can see the  La Mascletá, an ear-splitting firework display. And throughout the week “Ninots”, huge cardboard sculptures with satirical themes, make their way around the city streets and are eventually burned in the Cremà, massive fires on the night of the 19th.

12 Day Trips from Valencia

By: Author Laura Bronner

Posted on Last updated: March 9, 2024

12 Day Trips from Valencia

There are so many wonderful day trips from Valencia that you don’t want to miss out on when you visit the region.

If you are only visiting Valencia for a few days, there are enough things to do in Valencia city center to keep you busy. But if you are staying for a week or more (or moving to Valencia!), then you’ll want to know more about the rest of this stunning region.

Getting to the Valencia Day Trips

If you are visiting Valencia and you want to rent a car while you’re here, this is probably the best option for getting to some of the more remote day trips from Valencia. I always use Discover Cars to check prices and book rental cars in Spain.

If you are new to driving in Spain, check out our tips for driving in Spain so you know exactly what to expect.

If you don’t want the expense of renting a car, you can get to almost all of the Valencia day trips by train or bus.

I highly recommend getting yourself an Abono ticket. You can simply purchase this ticket from any Renfe machine inside the Valencia Nord Train Station. The ticket costs €10 and allows you unlimited travel on the Cercanias trains. These are the suburban trains that will take you from downtown Valencia to most of the day trip locations.

Download the Renfe Cercanias App ( Android here and Apple here ) so that you can check train times and see exactly where you can go with your Abono ticket.

Map of the Best Day Trips from Valencia

Day Trips from Valencia

Enjoy these Valencia day trips on your next trip to the region. Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list of all of the places to explore within the Autonomous Region of Valencia, but these are the easiest to get to by public transportation, via a tour, or to drive to in a doable day trip.

The city of Gandia is located 43 miles (70km) from downtown Valencia. If you are planning to travel by car, you can reach Gandia in just under an hour. If you are traveling on the Cercanias train, take the C1 from Valencia Nord Station and you’ll be there in about an hour and 10 minutes.

There are several reasons to visit Gandia . You can split your day into two parts, exploring the historical town and then hanging out at the beach (or vice versa).

A few things not to miss in downtown Gandia are the town hall and surrounding plaza , the archeology museum , and my personal favorite, the Ducal Palace . Be sure to grab an audioguide for the palace which is included in your ticket price.

To get to the beach from downtown Gandia, head back to the train station and you will see a large bus stop right in front of the station. There is a sign at the bus stop that says “Bus Playa.” Simply hop on the bus there and in about 15-20 minutes you’ll be at the beach.

You can catch it just across the street from where you get dropped off to take it back to the city. It runs roughly every 20 minutes.

The Ducal Palace was a highlight of my trip to Gandia.

2. Port Saplaya

The closest day trip from Valencia is the neighborhood of Port Saplaya. Technically not in the city of Valencia, Port Saplaya is part of the municipality of Alboraya. However, you can still easily reach this neighborhood to explore and spend the day floating in the calm waters of the beach here.

Port Saplaya has been nicknamed the Little Venice of Valencia. It is home to colorful houses that are surrounded by water. There aren’t any canals here, but the port is quite large and you can walk from one side to the other, weaving your way past these colorful buildings and peeking in at people’s yachts.

If you want to get to know more about the area while you’re here, you can take a boat tour which will show you all of the hidden spots around the port. The tour also includes a trip out into the bay where you can look back over the beautiful beaches of Valencia. Book that tour here .

To get to Port Saplaya from Valencia, you can grab a bus from this bus stop . Take either the L112a or L112b.

These are not local city buses, so if you have a Valencia bus pass or the EMTicket app, you won’t be able to use those on these buses. Have cash on hand to pay the driver once you get on. It costs about €3 per person each way and takes about 30 minutes.

Be sure to pack your beach gear and some towels. Once you explore the colorful port, there is a very calm and much quieter beach right in the town. If you get thirsty or want something sweet, stop into Horchatería Toni .

Beautiful Port Saplaya and its colorful buildings.

3. Xátiva

Xátiva is one of my favorite day trips from Valencia. It is located 38 miles (62km) from Valencia and is actually quicker to reach by train than it is by car. It will take you about an hour to drive here, but hop on the C2 Cercanias train from Valencia Nord and you’ll be there in about 40 minutes.

There is so much history in this town, there’s even an app you can download to help you explore it. Download it for Apple here and Android here .

The main attraction that makes Xátiva one of the best Valencia day trips is the Xátiva Castle. There are remains on this hill that date back to Roman times. Now you can explore the two different castles and the walls that surround it.

It’s a beautiful walk from the downtown area to the castle which takes about 30 minutes. There is also parking at the top, so if you are driving you can skip the walk.

A few other things not to miss in Xátiva include the Basilica of Xátiva , the Plaça del Mercat , and the stunning central patio inside the Antic Hospital Reial .

If you would prefer to visit Xátiva with a tour guide, you can take this tour which will pick you up at your hotel in Valencia and bring you back to the city. It also includes a stop at another nearby historical town called Anna. Book that tour here .

Xátiva Castle is a magical place to explore. Give yourself at least an hour to wander around, more if it’s a hot summer day.

4. Castellón de la Plana

There are three provinces within the Autonomous Community of Valencia; Valencia, Alicante, and Castellon.

Castellón de la Plana is the capital of the province of Castellon and is a hub of activity that is well worth visiting as a day trip from Valencia.

It’s located 45 miles (73km) from Valencia and takes about an hour to reach by car. If you want to take the train here from Valencia, hop on the C6 Cercanias and you’ll be here in about an hour and 15 minutes.

There’s a lot to see in this beautiful city, so be sure to start early and give yourself enough time to explore. Especially because a lot of the best museums and sites are only open in the morning.

The best spots not to miss include the Catedral de Santa Maria de Castelló, the Central Market, Castellón City Hall, and El Fadrí, the 15th-century bell tower that sits in the middle of all of these buildings.

You also can’t come to the Castellón region and not visit at least one of the beaches. The beaches here have been rated the best beaches in the Valencian Community and I have to agree. The beach located in the city of Castellón de la Plana is absolutely stunning. Mountains as a backdrop, soft sand for miles, and calm waters for swimming.

You can easily get to the beach by taking the tram from downtown to the end of the line at the port. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the end of the tram line or buses run along the length of the beach road to take you to different parts of the beach.

One of the old gates inside the Sagunto Castle.

Sagunto is the perfect day trip from Valencia if you love history. Sagunto is packed with Roman ruins that will wow even the most seasoned traveler. While I started learning about Roman history in Spain up in Zaragoza, the lessons were deepened here in Sagunto.

Hop on the C6 Cercanias train from Valencia Nord and you’ll be in Sagunto in about 35 minutes. These trains don’t run at frequent intervals, so definitely check the Cercanias app for the best times to get to and from Valencia.

Start your tour of Sagunto at the Via del Pòrtic Museum . Like and good small Spanish town, the opening hours are subject to change without notice, but as of my 2023 visit, there are two tours of the site per day; 12:30 and 5:00pm.

On Sundays and holidays, only the 12:30 tour takes place. This tour will take you through the Via del Pòrtic Museum as well as the Domus dels Peixos Museum which you can only visit with a tour.

After you learn all about Roman daily life from the tour, you can then move on to the other incredible sites around the city. The other two not-to-miss sites are the Roman Theater and the Sagunto Castle. Both are free to explore and open until dusk.

If you get hungry while you’re here, you may be surprised to learn that Sagunto is home to a Michelin Star restaurant and the only female-run restaurant in Valencia to hold this accolade. Find out more about Arrels Restaurant here .

The view back over the coast from Cullera Castle.

Cullera is one of my absolute favorite beaches in the Valencia region and is an incredibly easy place to visit as a day trip from Valencia.

You can take the C1 Cercanias train and be in Cullera in about 35 minutes. Then there are frequent buses that will carry you directly from the train station to the beach in an additional 10 or so minutes.

However, if you’re up for the walk, I recommend strolling from the station, through the town and up to Cullera Castle before you hit the beach.

You can visit the central market and the Church of Saint John. From the plaza in front of the market you will spot the zig-zagging path that you can follow all the way up to the top.

Take note of the different pillars along the path. Each one represents one of the 12 stations of the cross. At the top you can pay a small fee to visit the inside of the castle where there are some historical relics as well as an informational video. You can take in the views for free. It’s one of the most breathtaking views of the coastline that you can get anywhere in this area.

The beach in Cullera is a bustling place with plenty of restaurants and bars around. There are beach clubs where you can rent chairs and umbrellas or you can simply find an empty patch of sand and spread your blanket out to relax.

Stop into Ferevin to sample wine from all over the Utiel-Requena region from small growers.

Requena is one of the best day trips from Valencia if you love wine. This small town isn’t particularly close to Valencia, but it’s worth the hour and a half train ride to sit outside and drink local wine in the sunshine.

The wine region is known as the Utiel-Requena wine region. The most dominant grape to grow here is the bobal grape which you will be able to sample at most of the wineries in the region. However, you’ll also taste some fantastic white wines as well as plenty of great cava.

I recommend starting your trip to Requena with a visit to the Cuevas de la Villa.

These are an underground network of caves that have been here for centuries. For a small fee, you can a great audioguide available in English or Spanish. You will then walk through the different rooms of the cave learning about what each was used for over the course of history and eventually understand why this region became such a popular place for making delicious wine.

Once you come out of the caves, you will be right across the plaza from my favorite winery in this region, Murviedro . You can sample several of their wines in their tasting room or you can take a tour of the winery and learn all about their winemaking process.

You can also purchase bottles here and they are significantly cheaper than at the local supermarkets or other wine shops.

Then you absolutely must stop into Ferevin Wine Shop . This is a collective of many of the vineyards and wine producers here in Utiel-Requena.

If you want to sample wine from around the region from the small vineyards in the area, this is the best place to do it. Each tasting glass comes with a small meat and cheese platter to enjoy your wine with. They have seating inside and outside and you can purchase bottles of wine from tons of different wineries in the region.

8. Buñol

Buñol may be better known for the famous Spanish festiva l, La Tomatina. It takes place here every year near the end of August and thousands of pounds of nearly-rotton tomatoes are thrown around in one of the world’s biggest food fights.

But there is a lot more to see in this stunning town. Hikers do not want to miss Buñol when considering day trips from Valencia.

To get to Buñol, take the C3 Cercanias train which takes about an hour from Valencia Nord.

Like many of the best day trips from Valencia, Buñol has a castle that’s worth checking out. Once you explore some of the downtown, you’ll want to get to the main event, the different hiking trails and waterfalls that there are to explore around Buñol.

There are a few different trails which you can see on AllTrails . But if you only have time to visit Buñol once, you’ll want to take the waterfall trail . Pack a bathing suit and a lightweight quick-dry towel so you can cool off after a hike up here.

The walk from Sueca into the rice fields is a beautiful way to explore some of the Albufera without the tourists.

9. Albufera Natural Park

If you have spent any time in Valencia before, you’ll no doubt have seen tons of paella restaurants in Valencia. That’s because Valencia is the birthplace of paella.

It is also the region where most of the rice that is used to make paella is grown. Wandering the rice fields of the Albufera Natural Park you will get a glimpse at the sprawling fields of rice.

My favorite place ot view all of the rice fields is in the town of Sueca. You can take the C1 Cercanias train from Valencia Nord and be in Sueca in half an hour. From the train station, follow the bike path out to Ermita dels Sants de la Pedra . This is one of the highest points in the area. Although not very high at all, it is so flat around it that you get an incredible view over the rice fields.

The other main draw to the Albufera Natural Park is the Albufera Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Spain. If you want to explore this, I highly recommend taking a tour to the area . This way you can sit back and enjoy the views while someone else organizes the boat ride on the lake. Book that tour here .

If you speak Spanish, then by all means, hop on buses 24 or 25 from the downtown area and go all the way to the inside of the park. From here you can walk to the different boat launch locations around the lake and head out on a tourist ride.

Montanejos is a stunning place to explore and get out into nature.

10. Montanejos Thermal Springs

Montanejos Thermal Springs are located in the town of Montanejos in the province of Castellon. It’s about 55 miles (90km) from Valencia and is best reached either by car or by tour. It’s nearly impossible to reach by public transport as a day trip from Valencia.

The whole town of Montanejos is worth exploring if you have a car and the time to spend the day here. You can walk along the river to see the source of the springs as well as tons of other trails packed with natural beauty.

However, if you want to visit the springs and enjoy some of the natural beauty with a tour, this is a really fun and relaxing day trip from Valencia. This is one of the most affordable tour options which includes a hike in the area as well as a dip in the thermal springs.

If you want to spend most of the day swimming and enjoying the springs then this is the best tour option for you .

11. Caves of San Jose

The Caves of San Jose are one of the most naturally stunning day trips from Valencia. These caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes over a kilometer of accessible tunnel. First, you explore 800 meters of cave by boat and then an additional 250 meters on foot.

It is home to the longest navigable underground river in Europe and cave paintings that are incredibly well preserved. Your entry ticket includes the boat ride and the visit takes about 40 minutes.

You can easily drive here from Valencia but I recommend going with a tour guide. This tour is a great option that includes round-trip transportation from Valencia and a bilingual guide. Book that tour here .

The beautiful sunsets in Alicante.

12. Alicante

This is really only a day trip if you have a car or you wake up  reaaally early. Without a car, you can reach Alicante by bus or by train in about two hours.

Alicante is located just over 100 miles or 160km from Valencia, which makes it a long day if you plan to visit as a day trip from Valencia, but I still think it’s worth at least exploring some of the region of Alicante.

If you have a bit more time, I recommend spending the night because there are so many things to do in Alicante . The castle here is one of my favorites in the region and the central market is packed with fantastic food vendors. It also has a beach right in the downtown area and a stunning boardwalk that is perfect at sunset.

This Underrated European City Has One of the Largest Old Towns, a Futuristic Complex, and 12 Miles of Beaches

Valencia's historic center is one of Europe’s largest.

best tours valencia

Rachel Chang/Travel + Leisure

Sauntering through the Gothic-style cathedral with an audio guide loosely held up to my ear, my thoughts began to wander. It was late afternoon in the third city of my European trip, and as awestruck as I was when I first stepped into the building, it was yet another church in yet another historic city center. At this point, I was rotely playing the role of traveler, letting my instincts guide the way. I snapped a couple of shots of an ornate chapel off to the side that caught my eye and turned toward the exit.

But then two words from the audio guide made me perk to attention. I hit rewind. It couldn’t be. But apparently, without even trying, I had stumbled upon what archaeologists believe to be the actual Holy Grail, a golden chalice used by Jesus during the Last Supper.

What sheer luck. Without an ounce of effort or even realizing I was in the city where it resided, I had accidentally stumbled upon the elusively legendary relic here in the Cathedral of Val è ncia .

The truth is, València, Spain , itself just might be the holy grail of travel destinations. While so many destinations lure visitors with the promise of having something for everyone or a little taste of everything, Spain's third-biggest metropolis actually delivers multiple vacation types in one — and that accidental find was just the start of a string of constant joys I found myself in.

A Truly Historic City Center

Rachel Chang/Travel + Leisure

Having been the home to Romans, Visigoths, and Muslims, more than 2,000 years of history are tucked into València’s old town dating back to 130 B.C.E. But what makes it so enthralling is also its size: it is one of Europe’s largest historic centers.

Besides stumbling upon the Holy Grail at the cathedral, I also climbed its 207 steps up a spiral staircase up to the El Miguelete Gothic-style tower, built between 1381 and 1424. From under its still-operating bell, the panoramic view that emerges showcases just how massive the old town is, with its endless maze of winding roads below.

Back on the ground, I found myself making several visits to Mercat Central de València — Europe’s largest fresh produce market —  eating my way through the central market, sampling everything from wine and cheese to Spain’s famed cold cuts. But the most delightful treat was also the most local — Valencian horchata , made here of tiger nuts, refreshing with a touch of sweetness.

While passing through the Plaza de la Virgen just after noon on a Thursday, I came across the Tribunal de las Aguas (Water Court), a tradition that has continued for more than 1,000 years. At the outdoor proceedings, democratically elected farmers go about their rulings on 17th-century chairs. When one official spotted me as a curious tourist, he guided me over to take a photo sitting in one of the historic chairs and also introduced me to the court’s bailiffs.

A Glimpse Into the Future

Just a few kilometers to the southeast, time blasts into the future at the City of Arts and Sciences , a futuristic complex designed by Valèncian architect Santiago Calatrava and built along the River Turia’s old riverbed, breathing a new and innovative life into the center of València. The Hemisfèric was the first to open back in 1998, a convex-shaped building representing an eye, that appropriately serves as a 3-D theater with a concave screen. Also part of the area is the continent’s biggest aquarium Oceanogràfic , the interactive Museum of Sciences , the performance venue Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia , the open-access garden L’Umbracle Terraza , and the CaixaForum Valencia , dedicated to exhibits that combine history, art, science and technology.

While exploring each of the sites is a different cultural experience, even just walking — and even better, biking — through the City of Arts and Sciences is like a trip into the future.

Mediterranean Beach Getaway

With urban discoveries thousands of years into the past and future, nothing seems further away than soaking in the sun on the sand. Yet in less than a 20-minute ride on the train (also possible by a 10-minute drive), I was whisked away into the most sprawling of Spain's Mediterranean beaches.

In fact, València has more than 12 miles of golden beaches , especially remarkable for how wide the stretch of sand runs in some patches, including at Cabanyal and Malvarrosa beaches. The promenade between the two is a refined boardwalk, with boutiques and gift shops mixed with charming cafes, all luring patrons with their local dishes.

But this is so much more than just a city beach. Water sports facilities are abundant here, with two of the largest being the beach volleyball complex and the Malvarrosa reef.

Nature, Brutalism, and Innovative Cultural Finds

Admittedly one of the first things I learned about València was that it was the home of the paella. What I didn’t expect was that its precise birthplace is Albufera Natural Park . Just about six miles south of the city, yet another persona of the city comes into view. A soothing slice of natural wonderland, rooted around a huge freshwater lagoon. With more than 300 species of birds, the Racó de l’Olla Interpretation Centre provides an overview, as well as observatories. For a quintessential Albufera experience, book a boat trip and paella outing.

Also adding dimension to València’s persona: Espai Verd , an M.C. Escher-like brutalist cooperative apartment complex built by Antonio Cortés Ferrando in the early 1990s, as well as Bomba Gens , a digital arts center in a former Art Deco factory, located in Marxalenes neighborhood, a burgeoning artsy part of town.

Underneath it all, there’s a savviness about the city, rooted in its dedication to sustainability and digitalization, which earned it the title of a European Capital of Smart Tourism two years ago. While Madrid and Barcelona may be the headline attractions for Spain, Valencia offers every kind of vacation, with far less of the crowds.
