“Love … exciting and new…come aboard … we’re expecting you.” A special themed “Love Boat” cruise is setting a course for adventure onboard Majestic Princess with the original ensemble cast, who will celebrate their friend and everyone’s favorite cruise ship Captain Stubing with a tribute to Actor Gavin MacLeod. This seven-day cruise sails roundtrip from the Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) to the Mexican Riviera, February 26-March 5, 2022

Hosted by Princess Cruises Celebrations Ambassador Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing), who will be joined by fellow “Love Boat” cast members Cynthia Lauren Tewes (Julie McCoy), Bernie Kopell (Doc), Fred Grandy (Gopher) and Ted Lange (Isaac). Together, they will share their favorite memories from the show, participate in various guest activities and celebrate the late Gavin MacLeod, who served as brand ambassador for Princess Cruises for more than 35 years until his passing in May 2021, at the age of 90.

The voyage will be underway on MacLeod’s birthday – February 28 – and sails on the cruise line’s signature Mexican Riviera itinerary that was prominently featured during the TV show’s 10-year-run from 1977-1986, where Princess cruise ships served as the ocean-going co-star of the series. Guests will enjoy port visits to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.

“Reuniting with the cast for this very special themed ‘Love Boat’ cruise and celebrating the show’s lasting impact with guests is sure to be nostalgic, fun and incredibly memorable,” said Jill Whelan, Celebrations Ambassador for Princess Cruises. “While we always love to connect with fans this cruise will be extra special because we will also celebrate the life and career of Gavin, our fearless leader, who not only played my dad on TV but was also a true father figure to me beyond the show.”

“Love Boat” themed cruise activities include:

  • Sailaway party
  • Festive 1970s-inspired ‘Love Boat’ Disco Deck Party returns exclusively for a “command performance” during this themed cruise.
  • Renewal of vows ceremony, hosted by Whelan and the cast on the top-deck
  • Q&A with the cast, sharing favorite memories of the show and MacLeod
  • Birthday celebration honoring MacLeod
  • “Love Boat” episodes airing on Movies Under the Stars and in staterooms
  • Love Boat trivia with the Cruise Director
  • Cast photo opportunities
  • “Love Boat” themed menus and specialty cocktails
  • Themed décor, photo backdrops and merchandise

Princess has been connected to “The Love Boat” beyond the setting of the show, reuniting the original cast members for two ship christenings – Dawn Princess (1997) and Regal Princess (2014), appearing on the cruise line’s Rose Parade float and sailing on a throwback cruise in 2015 all celebrating the lines 50 th anniversary. In May 2018, the six original cast members of “The Love Boat” and Princess Cruises received an honorary star plaque on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of their contributions to the history of television and support of the preservation of the Walk of Fame. Breaking news, florida mom jenny phenix booted from her dream, 3-year cruise over whatsapp messages after selling her possessions.

A Florida mom who uprooted her entire life for a luxurious, three-year cruise around the world was allegedly banned by the ship’s owner after her private messages with gripes about the voyage were leaked and were “impacting community morale.”

Jenny Phenix, 68, reportedly took umbrage with multiple alleged issues on the ship — like an apparent four-month delay to even set sail — in WhatsApp messages that eventually made their way to the vessel’s owner.

“During the past year and a half I have liquidated businesses and possessions, eagerly awaiting my new life cruising the world,” Phenix told the Telegraph last week.

Jenny Phenix, 68, reportedly took umbrage with several alleged issues on the ship -- like an apparent four-month delay to even set sail

The divorced mother of two had been “living out of a suitcase” since December as she waited to board the Villa Vie Odyssey’s maiden voyage.

She first arrived in Southampton, England, in May, expecting to embark on the years-long voyage on the 15th, but the ship was moved to Belfast, Ireland, where guests were told they’d set sail on the 30th.

However, more problems were discovered on the Villa Vie Odyssey while dry docked, which further delayed its voyage.

The ship’s certifications expired as it sat idle for four years during the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing the owners of the ship to start all over again, according to the Telegraph.

The ongoing delays left Phenix and other passengers waiting to set sail for nearly four months.

The divorced mother-of-two had been "living out of a suitcase" since December as she waited to board the Villa Vie Odyssey's maiden voyage.

Her frustration grew when the ship changed its itinerary and revealed it would no longer dock in Miami, where she planned to pick up the rest of her belongings.

Phenix was also told that after the trip was underway, she would have to use a temporary cabin as the crew was still using the one she booked for the three-year adventure.

The 68-year-old voiced her concerns over the sudden changes to fellow passengers in a WhatsApp group over the developments.

Phenix then received a notice from the owners of Villa Vie stating that her reservation had been canceled for “behavior impacting community morale.”

Her frustration grew further when the ship changed its itinerary and revealed it would no longer dock in Miami, where she planned to pick up the rest of her belongings.

“We have received over a dozen formal complaints from residents regarding your continuous complaints and negativity,” Kathy Villalba, the ship’s chief operating officer, told her. “This behavior has significantly impacted the morale and well-being of other passengers.”

Villalba notified her that due to the “overwhelming feedback” it received, Villa Vie “must cancel” her contract “permanently” to ensure it “uphold[s] the well-being and satisfaction of our community.”

The blindsided mother of two questioned how these messages got back to the ship’s owner.

“These were private conversations — I posted nothing on social media platforms,” Phenix told the Telegraph.

“The frustration among residents grew after each delay. I tended to be one of the more outspoken in asking important questions. Many of the residents thanked me privately for speaking up for the entire group.”

Villa Vie Residences CEO Mikael Petterson told the Telegraph that Phenix “broke multiple terms and conditions and signed a non-disclosure agreement.”

This is the second time Phenix has had her hopes of living on a cruise ship crushed.

She had booked a spot on the residential ship Life At Sea,  which is based in Florida. On Nov. 17, 2023, the company announced that the cruise, e xpected to leave on Nov. 30, was canceled because the company hadn’t been able to buy the ship.

Life at Sea Cruises was forced to file for bankruptcy and still owes the divorcee the $30,000 deposit she laid out, according to the Telegraph.

The 68-year-old voiced her concerns over the sudden changes to fellow passengers in a WhatsApp group over the developments.

In January, Phenix had to share a house in Ecuador with another stranded passenger because she had rented her Florida condo out since she was expecting to go on the cruise, she told the New York Times .

However, still determined to live on a cruise ship, Phenix waited for Villa Vie Residences to buy the former Fred Olsen ship Braemar — now rebranded as the Villa Vie Odyssey — before locking in her spot, she told the Telegraph.

Never miss a story.

The divorcee purchased the “Endless Horizons” program, which allows “individuals to retire on a luxury cruise ship with unlimited lifetime cruises.”

The program starts at $300K and requires guests to pay at least half the deposit, according to the company’s website .

Phenix then received a notice from the owners of Villa Vie stating her reservation had been canceled for “behavior impacting community morale.”

Since being banned from the cruise, she has been partly refunded and is awaiting reimbursement of the remainder of her deposit.

The Odyssey has recently had sea trials as it gets recertified but has yet to sail on its three-year voyage, which is due to visit 425 destinations in 147 countries, the Telegraph reported.

Phenix has since returned to Florida, saying the ordeal has worn her down.

“I cannot even begin to explain the emotional devastation and the physical toll this has taken on me,” she told the outlet. “It is still very hard for me to discuss, as I had the same dream everyone else on that ship does, and they took that from me seemingly without a thought.”

“I will have to stay with my daughter until I figure out a whole new plan for my life.”

Azazel Jacobs Knew Carrie Coon Was the Woman for ‘His Three Daughters’ After Seeing ‘The Nest’

“I wrote it to a cutting rhythm. I tried to write the script so it would move exactly how I wanted it to film ,” Jacobs, who has explored New York stories before, from “French Exit” to “The Lovers” and his breakout, “Momma’s Man,” said in a recent IndieWire interview. (Jacobs’ films are right now being featured on the Criterion Channel in a career-spanning retrospective.) Here, he puts his actors on location in a Lower Manhattan three-bedroom apartment that feels astonishingly lived-in.

“Since I could hear Katie’s voice a certain way, this staccato way in, and Christina’s has this certain type of melody, and Rachel has a different one, I did my best to represent the script with how this movie would move. Then I wound up doing a color-coded version of the script just so I could think about where the cuts would be before shooting … because we’re in this one space, separating them, revealing the space slowly, compared to the actors and the characters that are also revealing themselves in this similar way, layer by layer.” Jacobs shot the movie in New York on 35mm with cinematographer Sam Levy .

love cruise comedy

“I had this chance. I had a real location. I had a place. How could I play with it in a way where it was being given to me? What could I do with that gift? Rather than, oh if I can move this wall and get the camera over here, and put a light through here. We were forced to shoot this way because we were on the sixth floor,” Jacobs said. “We can’t hang lights through the outside. We can’t shoot daytime when it’s nighttime. We had to live true to what was happening.”

Other than the moments when Rachel takes to the courtyard to smoke a joint rather than in the apartment at Katie’s behest, “His Three Daughters” never leaves its single location. And it never shows us what’s going on inside the bedroom of their father, Vincent (eventually played by Jay O. Sanders in a dreamy fantasy sequence, where he gets to say his piece).

Movies that include a bedside vigil for a dying person often come across as maudlin, though “His Three Daughters” thwarts that entirely in not only keeping us out of the father’s room but containing the drama to the squabbles between the three sisters. Katie, for one, is upset about the fact that there are only apples in the refrigerator, with Christina joining from California and Rachel at this point permanently living there alongside her dying dad. (She’s his stepdaughter from a second marriage, unlike his natural children Katie and Christina, and that becomes a sticking point, too.)

One movie on Jacob’s mind, though, and with a great bedside vigil scene, was Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia,” in which Tom Cruise pleads to his ailing parent (Jason Robards) about what a shitty father he was as his mortal coil shuffles off. Also, that death is flash-forwarded to in an earlier musical sequence, where the entire cast of “Magnolia” sings Aimee Mann’s “Wise Up” in a narrative-breaking choral round.

Jacobs doesn’t have a direct loss that corroborates why he made “His Three Daughters.” His father, experimental filmmaker Ken Jacobs, and his mother, are still very much alive. But that doesn’t make Jacobs any less capable of directing a movie about parental loss. Jacobs’ relationship to New York City, which he returned to last year after living in Los Angeles, also played a factor.

HIS THREE DAUGHTERS, from left: Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne, 2023. © Netflix / Courtesy Everett Collection

“It’s a personal film. My parents are both with us, but they are at an age that, over time, becomes very limited. There are health issues,” he said. “When I moved back to New York, I saw a window that I had before becoming more of a caretaker would take over, and this window I could use to tell this story. I’ve had people pass before me, and I’ve gone through this strange experience with how time moves that I really wanted to replicate with this film, and at the same time, I was very much facing this reality in my own family’s life. I wanted to express not only my fears about it but also my hopes.”

While Jacobs met Coon through her husband Letts, it was Sean Durkin’s movie “The Nest” that sold him on why she was right to play Katie, a bitter mother for whom caretaking becomes a nagging burden. And that goes not just for her father, but her messed-up sisters, too. “‘The Nest’ just blew me away. She’s just amazing,” Jacobs said. Recall that “The Nest” features Carrie Coon in a scene-stealing, chainsmoking leading role as a woman rebelling against her husband’s (Jude Law) financial downfall. And her own status as a mother.

“I remember when ‘The Lovers’ premiered, she sat right behind me. Hearing her laugh [during] that film was comforting and exciting. She was getting a kick out of that film, and it meant a lot to me … But then definitely seeing her work, which wasn’t surprising because you can feel that kind of force coming off her. Really, truly, kudos to Sean Durkin for ‘The Nest.’ That was the first time I saw her and was like, how do I get the chance to work with her?” Jacobs said.

The Nest Carrie Coon IFC Films

One of the most piercing and real moments of “His Three Daughters” finds Coon and Olsen speaking pig Latin, a secret way of altering words that is often code for youngsters to speak without adults understanding them. “I didn’t speak it as a kid, and I just looked up different pig Latin languages, so I typed in the pig Latin — I don’t know if it’s that, it’s like a childish gibberish — that seemed like the simplest way of communicating. It was something I’d seen with siblings before but not something I ever had. I wrote it out phonetically and I remember getting a call from both Lizzie and Carrie saying, ‘So how is this actually said?’ I only wrote. I didn’t know how it was said … I let them know, I just wrote it, and I hope you’ll figure it out, and they did, and by the time they showed up, they could both do it very quickly. It was the first time I was hearing what that would sound like out of my mind, an instinct they used and embraced and stuck with.”

“His Three Daughters” is now in theaters and premieres on Netflix Friday, September 20.
