Mamma Mia Greece Locations | The Complete Guide by a Local
If you have been wondering where exactly the Mamma Mia Greece Locations are, this post will offer all the relevant information!
Mamma Mia is a popular and successful movie, filmed in 2008 in three spectacular Greek locations: Skopelos and Skiathos Islands in the Sporades island group and Damouchari , a tiny village in eastern Pelion Mount right across from the Sporades.
The Mamma Mia Greece Locations as they are presented in the film is a masterpiece of crafty film editing. The producers and director have combined those three locations and mixed them up adding props that were adapted to the settings at Pinewood Studios.
Mamma Mia is a romantic musical, based on the songs of the 1970s and early 80s Swedish pop group ABBA. Although, ABBA or musicals, in general, is not everybody’s cup of tea, however, it did boost Skopelos Greece tourism tremendously.
For the first time, the spectacular landscape of Agios Ioannis Kastri and remote sandy beaches such as Kastani with emerald waters made Skopelos widely known.
Up next I am going to tell you about the Mamma Mia Greece Locations!

Mamma Mia Greece Locations
Skopelos or Kalokairi Island
Skopelos Greece or Kalokairi (summer) as it was called in the movie, is the main Mamma Mia Greece Locations. These locations belong to Skopelos Island:
- the wedding scene chapel is at the St. Ioannis beach
- the main beach of the movie is in Kastani
- the view from the house can be found on Glysteri beach
- scenes were filmed in Amarandos Cove, Milia Beach and
- Skopelos Chora
Mamma Mia island Skopelos is the greenest island in the Aegean Sea and the second largest island in the Sporades group. 67% of its surface is covered in pine forests creating a magical place that looks like a paradise.
Sporades group is located north of Evia island and east of Pelion Mt. The group includes Skopelos, Skyros, Alonissos , Skiathos , and Peristera islands (the ones with residents) and many other smaller islands with no residents at all.
Agios Ioannis in Kastri: The Wedding Scene
The magical wedding scenes were filmed at the astonishing church of Agios Ioannis in Kastri in northern Skopelos, about an hour from Skopelos town. Right across from the rock where the chapel stands on its top, Donna sings ‘The winner takes it all’ to Sam.
The beautiful church has over 100 very steep steps carved into the rock, but with handrails to hang on to. It is a hardship but you will be compensated for the spectacular view when you get to the top of Skopelos and nearby Alonissos.
You can spend time on Agios Ioannis Beach with a coffee shop that also rents sunbeds and umbrellas.
- Kastani Beach
Kastani is one of the most beautiful beaches in Skopelos with turquoise waters and no wonder why it was chosen for Mamma Mia Greece locations.
This is the beach where Tania sings ‘Does Your Mother Know?’, where Sophie and Skye sing ‘Lay All Your Love on Me’, and where Donna and the dads say goodbye to Sophie and Skye and sing ‘I Have a Dream’.
At Kastani Beach you will find a busy beach cafe, sunbeds as well as a water-sports rental, with a party atmosphere on summer evenings. And if they play Abba songs, you can feel you are part of the film as well!
Glysteri Beach
In Glysteri Beach, which is close to Skopelos Chora, is the supposed arched stone entrance to the Villa Donna (which doesn’t exist in Skopelos). The mountainous peninsula near Glysteri Beach was the departure point for Sophie’s wedding.
Glysteri is an organized beach, popular and busy with loud music and a party ambiance.
If you are a fan of the film, you can take a guided Mamma Mia tour to Skopelos to spend a day visiting the Mamma Mia film locations by coach, with time for swimming and a nice lunch by the sea.
Amarandos Cove
The idyllic sailing scene where Sophie and her 3 dads sing ‘Our Last Summer ‘ was shot at Cape Amarandos in Skopelos . The stunning cape has lots of hidden coves and rocky swimming places. You can hike there but it is quite challenging so the easiest way to approach this area is by boat.
Where to Stay in Skopelos
Adrina Beach Hotel is in a stunning location on Adrina Bay with a fabulous pool and a beachside restaurant overlooking the turquoise water beach while the cozy rooms of Eleni Studios Neo Klima Skopelos with a beautiful garden, magnificent sea views over the Eleos Beach and competitive comfort and facilities.
FAB PROPERTIES
Check out availability and prices for the best hotels and apartments in Greece on Booking and Expedia .
Where to eat in Skopelos
For fine Mediterranean cuisine, go to Zoupas restaurant in Chora . The Agnanti restaurant in Glossa is famous for its good Greek cuisine, but also for its incomparable view. On the beach of Panormos, you will find the tavern of Giannis with many local Skopelos recipes. Mouria is a nice fish tavern on the beach of Agnontas.
How to get to Skopelos
Skopelos is reached by ferry from Volos, Kymi, and Mantoudi ports on Evia island and Agios Konstantinos port in Fthiotida. A bridge links Evia Island to the mainland and is two hours drive from Athens.
Alternatively, you can fly to Skiathos from Athens and take the ferry to Skopelos. Check FerryScanner to get the best prices in the market with no hidden fees.
Skiathos Island – Mamma Mia Greece Locations 2
Skiathos is the most touristic area of Sporades, with 60 magnificent sandy beaches , all surrounded by fragrant pine forests.
The locations where the filming took place in Skiathos are in the old port next to the picturesque and pine-covered peninsula of Bourtzi. From Skiathos is the scene where Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, run to catch the boat that will take them to Skopelos.
All the seaside shops in Skiathos had to adjust their facades and table seatings to look as if they belonged to an older era. Filming also takes place in Agios Nikolaos where Sophie sends the letter to invite the 3 prospective fathers to her wedding.
Where to Stay in Skiathos
The La Piscine Art Hotel, Philian Hotels and Resorts is set in a peaceful area, just a 5-minute walk to the center of Skiathos. The stylish hotel is adults-only and offers an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a friendly atmosphere.
The Polykratis Rooms is a very convenient cozy property, ideal for families, just a 4-minute walk from the beach and 500 meters from Skiathos Town.
Where to Eat in Skiathos
One of the best restaurants in Skiathos is Carnayo in the new port with Mediterranean cuisine using organic vegetables. For fresh fish go to Scuna and for traditional and fresh local flavors stop by Artesanal.
A modern Greek cuisine restaurant that is also worth trying is the award-winning Elia’s Restaurant inside Mandraki Village Hotel.
How to get there You can fly to Skiathos from Athens , or take the ferry from Agios Konstantinos, Mantoudi, or Volos ports.
Damouchari in Pelion Mt – Mamma Mia Greece Locations 3
The ‘Dancing Queen’ dance starts in Villa Donna and continues to the courtyard (both scenes were shot in Pinewood Studio). It then extends to the area outside Villa Donna (the arch in Glysteri Beach, Skopelos). The route ends at the port of Damouchari in the Mouresi area along the coast of eastern Pelion in mainland Greece.
The jetty you see in the film was built especially for this scene. It was dismantled to retain the peaceful and traditional scenery of Damouchari.
Damouchari’s tiny port is perfect for a meal with fresh fish, a dive to the 50 meters far beautiful beach, a stroll under the olive trees, or a hike to Tsagkarada, 8 km from Damouchari.
Where to Stay in Damouchari
Victoria’s Guesthouse is ideally set in front of Damouchari port, with a lovely terrace and brightly decorated rooms.

Mamma Mia! Trip to Greece: Visit the locations

The Complete Guide to the Movie’s “Mamma Mia! The Movie” Locations
Greece has always been a compelling country attracting all types of travelers from across the globe. Yet, recently, the amazing movie Mamma Mia! has increased everyone’s interest and admiration to an even higher altitude. But more than the movie itself, everyone fell in love with the extraordinary landscapes of Greece.
Did you know that Mamma Mia! The Movie was filmed in Greece, however, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was filmed in Croatia?
Where was Mamma Mia filmed? Where is the island of Kalokairi?
The beautiful island of Kalokairi indeed stole the fans’ hearts. But one would wonder whether the stunning island exists. The answer is yes and no. There is no island called Kalokairi. However, the locations in the movie are not imaginary. They exist and welcome millions of travellers yearly. Nonetheless, there is still a way to experience its beauty and carefree lifestyle featured in the movie.
The primary location for Mamma Mia! is on the island of Skopelos , with some scenes shot also on the island of Skiathos . Both Skopelos and Skiathos are part of the Sporades islands .
There is also a third location, the seaside village of Damouchari in Pelion, where Mamma Mia! was shot.
If we go by the film’s storyline and locations, Skopelos is the fictional island of Kalokairi. Most outdoor scenes of beautiful beaches with crystal clear azure waters and incredible mountainous landscapes and cliffs were at Skopelos.
Out of the three places where Mamma Mia was shot, Skopelos is the one where most of the outdoor scenes were shot. There is a rumour that the producers visited 21 Greek islands before they chose Skopelos.
According to SEEN-IT , you can find below most of the locations where Mamma Mia! The Movie was shot.
Which beaches were used for Mamma Mia? Visit Kastani Beach
There are several locations with starring roles in the movie, one of which is the gorgeous sandy Kastani Beach , with its stunning scenery and crystal clear waters. This is the beach that the producers of Mamma Mia! chose for the scene where Tanya sang the “Does your mother know?” song. Also, this is where Sky and Sophie sing “Lay all your love on me” and Donna and the three dads sing “I have a dream”. There is a beach bar, however, it is not the one that is featured in the musical. There is also no wooden pier as it was added just for the movie.
Cape Amarantos is also featured in the film as the place where Sophie and her three dads jump into the water during the song “Our Last Summer”.
Where is the church from Mamma Mia? Visit Agios Ioannis Kastri
The picturesque church in the movie is real and open to everyone. The church is the beautiful tiny church of Agios Ioannis Kastri in the northern area of Skopelos island. The church is perched on the top of a rock, 100 meters above sea level, gazing at the magnificent Mediterranean Sea, Skopelos’ coasts, and the nearby island Alonissos. Agios Ioannis Kastri is featured at the end of the movie as this is the place where Sophie wants to get married.
At Agios Ioannis is the location where Donna is talking with Sam on the stairs of the chapel, where the wedding takes place. This is the place where Donna sings ‘The Winner Takes It All’ to Sam.
If you are looking for a Mamma Mia family tour in Greece, make sure to have a look at our fully customizable “ The Mamma Mia Greece Family Tour “ .
The church’s name in English is translated into Saint John on the castle. Therefore, it is possible that once upon a time, there was a castle on the very same rock that was used as a fort and protection against pirates. You need to climb 199 steps to reach the church, and right beneath the rock, there is a little beach.
Other places featured in the movie: In Glysteri Bay, Amanda reads Donna’s diary to her friends.
Sing and dance your way through Greece on the Mamma Mia Family Tour ! Explore movie spots, soak up the sun, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Old Port of Skiathos
Skiathos is the only island in Sporades that has an airport. If you would like to check out the locations of Mamma Mia!, the easiest way is to fly to Skiathos and then visit Skopelos.
In Skiathos, you will find the Old Port, where the three fathers of Sophie meet for the first time. In the Old, Port is where Sam and Harry miss the ferry that can take them to the wedding. Then they meet Bill who has a sailing boat.
Damouchari is a port in Pelion that was featured in Mamma Mia! According to the website of the village, in September 2008, all inhabitants of Damouchari became extras in the film. There are several dancing scenes with Merril Streep, including when Donna and her friends jump into the water during the song Dancing Queen.
Does Villa Donna, the hotel from Mamma Mia, exist?
Unfortunately, the hotel Villa Donna is not real, much like Kalokairi Island. That said, Villa Donna’ is supposedly above Glysteri Beach in Skopelos.
However, there are plenty of outstanding hotels on both Skopelos and Skiathos for Mamma Mia’s lovers to enjoy and feel like part of the cast. Moreover, if you desire to follow the movie’s and the actor’s footsteps, you could always stay at the hotels the cast stayed at during the filming.
Contact our team and we will help you plan the most memorable Mamma Mia family trip in Greece.
At Skiathos, these hotels are the Skiathos Princess Hotel, the Skiathos Palace Hotel, and the Mandraki.
At Skopelos, the Skopelos Village Hotel, the Prince Stafylos Hotel, the Adrina Hotel, and the Aeolia Hotel. Another alternative is renting a villa to experience the traditional Greek style of architecture, decor, and lifestyle, in the same way as we see it in the musical.
How can you get to Skiathos and Skopelos?
The easiest way to reach both islands is by flying from Athens to Skiathos airport . The flight is only about twenty minutes. From there, Skopelos Island is very accessible by using a ferry from Skiathos port (approximately 30 min by fast ferry).
You can catch a ferry to Skiathos and Skopelos from 4 ports in mainland Greece: Volos , Mantoudi, Agios Konstantinos, and Thessaloniki. The best and fastest way to reach the island is to travel from the port of Volos as there is a high-speed vessel.

A 'Mamma Mia' Tour Of Skopelos, Greece
The 2008 romantic comedy musical starring Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep and featuring ABBA songs was a bit hit. Even today, tourists visiting the island are interested in visiting the spots they admire in the Mamma Mia movie . Enjoy this small guide to the various locations used for filming this rom-com, from Skopelos island – the sole ‘location’ in the film’s story – to Skiathos and Damouhari, in the Pelion.
Kastani beach.
Kastani beach is one of the best on Skopelos and is primarily known for its tranquility and beauty, with its turquoise waters and lush and verdant surroundings. Both the wooden pier and the bar in the movie do not exist anymore though the beach now has a proper beach establishment.
Songs performed there: Does Your Mother Know, Lay All Your Love on Me, I Have a dream
Glisteri was used for basic backgrounds during the movie – it was here that Sophie read her mother’s diary to her friends, for example. The small peninsula near the beach Glisteri was the point where Sophie left for her wedding ceremony.
Songs performed there: Dancing Queen

Church In Agios Ioannis In Kastri
The stunning outdoor scenes of the wedding were filmed in the church of Agios Ioannis Sto Kastri in Skopelos while the interior scenes were actually shot at Agion Panton, a tiny church located in front of Panagitsa tou Pirgou at the edge of Skopelos harbor. To reach the Agios Ioannis church, visitors must climb 100 stone-carved steps, but once there, the view is magnificent.

Amarantos, Milia & Agnontas
Milia Beach – although not a filming location per se – features in the movie as well as the small Dahsia islet in the background. The pretty harbour of Agnontas was the place where the boat in ‘Money Money Money’ was moored and Amarantos definitely merits a visit, especially for sunset.
How To Get There?
Now that you know the various filming locations on Skopelos, all you have to go is get there. This stunning pine-covered island is easily accessible by ferry (4-5 hours) and hydrofoil (2 hours) from Volos harbour. There are some sea connections from Agios Konstantinos, near Athens and from Kymi in Evia. But Skopelos is 45 minutes by hydrofoil and 70 minutes by ferry from Skiathos, and daily connected to Athens by plane.

Skiathos: Taking The Mamma Mia Boat Trip with Poseidon
As an unapologetic fan of both Mamma Mia! films, I knew that a boat trip was on the cards when I booked my trip to Skiathos.
Skiathos Town is one of the filming locations for the first film – although it’s a little bit blink-and-you’ll-miss-it . A lot of the film was actually filmed in Pinewood Studios in London.
But there are a few more filming locations over on neighbouring island Skopelos – a mere hour away. Thankfully there are several Mamma Mia! themed boat trips available from Skiathos Town which will take you there.
I choose to go with Poseidon as it’s the only boat from Skiathos which stops at right by Agios Ioannis, the clifftop chapel made famous as the location of Sophie’s wedding at the end of the first film (if you take a different boat you’ll need to get an expensive taxi if you want to walk up to the chapel).
Itineraries may change according to the weather and the schedule, but here’s what we got up to when we set sail for the imaginary island of Kalokairi…
The boat leaves from the Old Port in Skiathos Town. This is actually one of the film locations – it’s where Sam and Harry arrive at the port and miss the ferry to Kalokairi (which is not a real island). Watch the film and you’ll briefly spy the blue-shuttered windows pictured above.
The boat left at 10 and I was advised to board at 9:30am to get a good spot on deck. I recommend going earlier though as there were plenty of people already on board by the time I got there (and this was early in the season so it wasn’t completely full).
FIRST STOP – MAMMA MIA CHURCH
The first stop is the best for Mamma Mia lovers. It took about 1 hour in good weather to reach Agios Ioannis (otherwise known as the Mamma Mia! church) from Skiathos Town.
Of course, the soundtrack is played as soon as you leave the harbour, and it was perfectly timed so that The Winner Takes It All was playing as we rounded the rocky cliff that is home to the Agios Ioannis chapel.
Cheesy but amazing .
Sadly the boat never quite comes alive with music a la Dancing Queen, though a few of us murmur along quite tunelessly.
The boat (pictured below) anchors at the beach next to the chapel. I’d say it was a 10-15 minute steep uphill walk. The path is fairly uneven and there were a few people on our trip who struggled, but most were fine. But it’s worth the effort for the view.
If you don’t want to walk up you can relax on the beach itself, which is beautiful – the water is an incredible shade of blue. There a small snack bar nearby too.
The chapel in real life is pretty tiny! You certainly couldn’t fit a wedding contingent in here.
The interior is very different from the one the film, which was a studio set based on the interior of Panagitsa tou Pirgou church in Skopelos Town.
SECOND STOP – SKOPELOS TOWN
Next the boat motored along the coast, past Amarantos (where Sophie reads Donna’s diary at the start of the film) and Glysteri (where they jump from the rocks in Our Last Summer) towards Skopelos Town for a lunch stop.
Skopelos Town was a delightful surprise.
There are no Mamma Mia locations in Skopelos Town itself. But it doesn’t matter because I can tell you – Skopelos Town has vibes .
It’s a gorgeous harbour with very chilled (if slightly chi-chi) atmosphere. I spied a brewery that plays jazz, immaculate streets with pretty coloured balconies, great shopping, homemade ice-cream, and a juice bar. Is this where the hipsters come in the summer?
I had a large plate of tomatokeftedes with a red pepper and cheese dip and a Fix whilst watching the ferries and plotting a return trip.
In fact, I almost did a Sophie and stayed.
THIRD STOP – BEACH
The third stop included on the tour depends on the day and also the weather.
The main Mamma Mia beach on Skopelos is Kastani. This is the where Lay All Your Love On Me and Does Your Mother Know were filmed. The jetty and beach bar no longer exist but you can still do your best Amanda Seyfried and writhe around on the beach in your swimsuit. Just be aware that the beach is pebbly rather than sandy.
We stopped at Milia, which is the next beach along the coast. It’s equally beautiful with incredible colours (particularly when the sun shines, or so I’m told as it was unfortunately forecast by the time we got there).
The beach itself at Milia wasn’t used as a location – possibly some shots were filmed between Milia and the nearby Dhasia islet but I’ve not managed to confirm this. I may be grasping at straws.
Whilst writing up this post I came across these amazing behind-the-scenes photos of filming on Skopelos which give you a great idea of how the scenery is used.
And that wrapped up the boat tour, and we headed back to Skiathos Town in time for a sundowner at Bourtzi.
All in all, it’s an enjoyable and relaxing day- as long as you don’t have expectations of visiting all the locations or of everything looking the same as in the film. I can also imagine it’s considerably less relaxing in July and August when the boats are completely packed.
The locations are all worth a visit in their own right, and non-Mamma Mia! lovers will be pleased to note that the soundtrack is only played once. The poor staff must be completely sick of it.
Fans should note that throughout the summer there’s also frequent showings of the first film at the open-air cinema on the Bourtzi.
Thankfully this is where the cheese ends. The only other reference I saw to the films was an ice-cream parlour named after the film, and a few places called Sophie’s Apartments (or similar).

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again officially comes out on July 20, and I'm already so excited. Like most of my favorite romantic comedies, I've watched the first film over and over. I know every single lyric to "Dancing Queen," and am expecting the sequel will have another soundtrack full of ABBA jams, too. Let's be honest: You wish you could've been there when they filmed that iconic scene with Meryl Streep skipping by the beach. The places in Greece every Mamma Mia! fan should visit will be a complete daydream. They are well-worth taking a trip to those beautiful islands in the Mediterranean.
Personally, I just want to know: What in the world happened to Donna?! The trailers show that this second movie will go back in time to that summer when her free-spirited character constantly fell in love and tried to figure out life. But, up until this point, they've been unclear about her current whereabouts. They show Sophie roaming around the cobblestone streets with her family and friends, announce that she's pregnant, and even Cher makes an appearance. We need answers, people!
For now, though, you may just want to scope out some new destinations for your bucket list, that are completely inspired by the movie. There's nothing quite as sweet as stamping your passport, except for maybe watching your favorite romantic comedies. These seven locations in Greece will be a must for every Mamma Mia! fan.
01 Skopelos
Set your sights on Skopelos if you truly want to feel like you're living in the world of Mamma Mia! . This island is actually one of the primary locations for the first movie , according to IMDB, so you'll be able to recreate a lot of your favorite scenes.
From the second you land, you'll be in awe with the bright blue water and maybe find some spots to be particularly familiar. You'll see the cliff sides where Donna poured her heart out to Sam in song, and will likely find yourself humming, "Mamma Mia."
02 Skiathos
Next to Skopelos, is another island where Mamma Mia! was filmed, called Skiathos. By now, you probably know that no matter where you go among the Greek islands, it's going to be beautiful. Every place comes with stunning towns, lush greenery, and lots of incredible seafood. But, this spot is best known for its beaches and vibrant nightlife, according to Visit Greece .
While you're there, you'll definitely want to spend at least an afternoon at Banana Beach or Lalária Beach. Your social media will have a sun-kissed glow after you post some photos from this paradise.
03 Santorini
I wouldn't be surprised if Santorini isn't already on your bucket list, but odds are, you still haven't bought a plane ticket. You've been waiting for the perfect time to follow your wanderlust, or are still trying to find the best kinds of travel buddies to take on this trip. Girl, it's time you get yourself to the Greek ASAP.
You'd love to soak up the sunsets with your significant other, or explore and do some shopping with your main squeeze. If you're being honest with yourself, this place would probably be otherworldly, and you spend most of your days at work daydreaming about such an unreal destination.
Mamma Mia! might not have been filmed in Mykonos, but if you're hopping around the Greek islands, you'll definitely want to make a stop. You could settle for those usual pool parties and brunches, or go somewhere that's movie-worthy with your besties. The decision seems pretty easy to me.
Some of your favorite travel and lifestyle bloggers have already been roaming around this exquisite place, and you've heard about its epic nightlife. One vlogger had her bachelorette party here , complete with a scavenger hunt around town and lots of sunny days. That's honestly #goals, if you ask me, and you'll want to gather your girl crew, too.
Corfu is a destination where you can experience architecture and history right in the center of town. During the day, you'll want to check out places like the Achillion Palace or even a few museums to learn about the atmosphere and what you're walking by, and soak in every bit of the sunshine. Like the rest of the Greek islands, there are beautiful beaches everywhere you look, and you'll definitely spend some time relaxing before continuing your adventure at the night club at The Pink Palace , too.
All of the Greek islands seem so romantic, with the white houses and saturated skies. But, quite possibly the most attractive atmosphere you'll find is in Rhodes.
Out of all the islands, this is one of the biggest , with an impressive amount of beaches you can visit, and villas that'll be the setting for your very own movie-like adventure. For Mamma Mia! fans like yourself, you'll be hoping to meet your very own Sky, or maybe even a rough-around-the-edges character like Bill while you're out and about in the Mediterranean. Seriously, sign me up for this trip, and the next casting, OK?
Last, but certainly not least, is the island of Crete. With a bunch of hiking trails , infinity pools that seem to stretch out to the sea, and boats rides that you can take out into the surrounding area, you'll truly never be bored. Not to mention, you'll feel like you're part of Mamma Mia !
I think some of us love romantic comedies because they're always taking place in such beautiful places around the world. Mamma Mia! was filmed in Greece (as you know), and Forgetting Sarah Marshall makes us laugh while showing off everything Hawaii has to offer. Traveling to such places is just a must, especially when there are even more movies on the way.

Skopelos, Greece: The Complete Guide
Even if you don't recognize the name Skopelos, if you like "Mamma Mia!" you're well-acquainted with the island. Skopelos doubles as Kalokairi, the island in the first "Mamma Mia!" movie starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried. The 37-square-mile island is in the Aegean Sea off the coast of mainland Greece and is part of the Sporades island group.
Kalokairi is a made-up name used in the movie and it has nothing to do with Skopelos itself. Kalokairi translates to "summer" in Greek so just about any Greek island could technically be called a "summer island."
Even if you have no interest "Mamma Mia!," Skopelos should be on your travel list. It is a relatively unspoiled island catering to British and Greek tourists. It's considered an expensive island by Greek standards, definitely not catering to the backpacker crowd. Since the first "Mamma Mia!" movie, the island has seen a bit of a surge in tourism. Before it "became" Kalokairi, it was a favorite island for Greeks to visit for vacations. There are many small hotels on Skopelos, and you can also rent villas or apartments.
History of Skopelos
Originally called Peparethus, Skopelos was colonized in the Late Bronze Age by Cretans. They began growing wine grapes on the island and over time the island garnered a reputation in Ancient Greece for quality wines. The name Skopelos comes from a legend naming Staphylus, a son of the Greek god Dionysus whose name translates to grape, the island's founder.
For centuries agriculture was a key driver of Skopelos's economy but now the island relies almost entirely on the tourism industry. There are some locally-produced foods you can try, however, including olive oil, feta, cheese pie, and honey.
What to Do and See in Skopelos
Beyond relaxing on one of the beaches and enjoy the island's beautiful architecture, adventure seekers can take to one of the many mountains. Delphi Mountain tops out at 2,234 feet (681 meters) and offers sweeping views of the island and surrounding sea. Alternatively, Mount Palouki is the site of several monasteries and is an excellent place to go birding.
"Mamma Mia!" fans will surely want to hunt down some iconic filming locations. For a comprehensive list of real-world places featured in the movie including where some of the stars lived and dined on Skopelos, check out our guide to the "Mamma Mia!" filming locations . For a dramatic photo opportunity head to the Chapel of St. John (Agios Ioannis chapel), where they filmed the wedding procession. A climb up the rock path will take you to a small, cliffside chapel with stunning views of the sea
Dining in Skopelos
Restaurants on Skopelos tend to feature fresh-caught seafood traditionally prepared, but you can also expect plenty of meat and the local specialty of cheese pie. Most restaurants are located in Skopelos town and along the larger beaches. While a vast majority of restaurants offer Greek and Mediterranean fare, there are a few Italian restaurants. Unfortunately you won't be able to pay a visit to the beach bar featured in "Mamma Mia." The bar was built on Kastani beach for the film along with a jetty and both were removed after filming wrapped.
Events in Skopelos
The patron saint of Skopelos, Agios Reginos, has a feast day on Feb. 25. The Loizia Festival in August is a popular cultural event, with concerts, the music of Loizos, theater, dance, storytelling, food and more.
In the past, Skopelos has also held a photographic exhibit in July; the Prune Festival in August; and a free, September wine event in the town of Glossa. During the Wine Festival, organized by the Cultural Society of Glossa, visitors are offered free wine. The celebrating and the dancing lasts till the early hours of the morning.
Another annual event, the International Film Festival for Youth, takes place in summer in the town of Skopelos and features cinema workshops and film screenings.
Getting There
Skopelos has no airport, so visitors need to fly to Skiathos, where some other scenes in the original "Mamma Mia" were shot, and then take about an hour-long ferry ride to Skopelos. That's the quickest route.
You can also drive up the coast from Athens on the fast, good National Highway. Or cruise down the coast from Thessaloniki and then take a ferry to Skiathos from Agios Constatinos, and then go on to Skopelos. There are other ferry options available, especially in summer.
