It also includes a Facebook-like feed your stories and photos, or to see what other users are sharing.

Of course, Instagram is an incredibly popular mainstream social media network. While it’s not exclusively for travelers, it is a great resource for sharing photos, videos, and stories from your journeys. Since so many people are already on Instagram, it’s a great choice if you want to connect. You don’t need to be an influencer with millions of followers and lots of engagement to get a lot out of Instagram.

Pinterest is another mainstream social media platform that is ideal for travel. You can create your own boards for planning your trips, use Pinterest’s search engine to find things you might want to do, and pin the interesting ones from your board. Many people share photos and links to blog posts or articles from their journeys, so you can easily tap in to that collective wisdom by using Pinterest for planning your own trips.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re planning a trip or vacation or looking to connect with other travelers, social media content can be incredibly helpful. The platforms and apps covered in this article are the best available options for connecting with like-minded people. Using the information you find from locals and travelers, you can avoid travel industry and tourism details like a travel agency and large group tours.

How to Use Social Media As A Vacation Planner

TravelwithMeraki-Stock Image - Map

Create the perfect trip itinerary by using social media as a vacation planner.

Table of Contents

Planning an adventure is one of my favorite past times.

I’ve even been known to plan my journey for trips I may actually never get to take.

Other than flicking through amazing books like Lonely Planet’s collections , social media is one of the easiest ways to research your next big trip and create an online travel itinerary.

How To Plan A Trip

Social media is a double-edged sword.

We hear so much about how it is addictive and destroying real-life interaction.

There is a whole generation that is going to have selfies taken in bathrooms to look back on in their old age.

Awesome photo’s have us yearning to experience the life that influencers are supposedly enjoying. Although these are so often extremely staged and far removed from real life.

Most of us that use social media to engage are just as guilty of this. I only put up my most beautiful pictures from my travels . Not the temper tantrum my kid has just had at the airport or us all sick from eating something a little too exotic.

Social media can be beautiful too.

I have made some amazing friends on Social Media and I use it as one of my main tools as a vacation planner .

I’ve discovered places I’ve never heard of and had advice shared by people who have the experience where I want to go first hand. Making it the perfect tool to plan a trip.

Here’s how to make the most of your social media to create a travel itinerary.

Plan My Trip

This is usually the first place I go to when I start thinking about a trip itinerary.

Just type in the country, location or what you need to know in the search section and away you go. Your own trip creator.

Even better is when you follow some great accounts who inspire you to travel to somewhere you would never have considered before.

Top Tips for using Pinterest as an itinerary planner

  • Find accounts who inspire you and travel how you do. Follow them.
  • Find boards filled with things you love and places you want to see. Follow them too.
  • Create your own board/boards and start collecting pins that inspire you. If you don’t want others to see this just make your board secret. It such an easy way to keep all your info in one easy to find again location. You can keep all your pins on one board like “Scotland” or a few boards that go more in depth. “Places to stay in Scotland”, “Hikes in Scotland”
  • Make sure you do a little research on your pins. During my most recent Europe trip planner for Scotland, I’ve seen some amazing images of the Fairy Pools on Skye , all lined with purple trees. If you look a little harder you will find the same image, without the photoshopping with lush green trees… of a river in New Zealand.
  • A great place to start are those pins that show “top ten places to visit” or “ secret locations in”.  Check out the articles linked to these pins then look further into the locations that spike your interest.
  • Make sure you scroll down after clicking on a pin, you can discover some great finds in the “related pins” section.
  • You can pin directly from websites to your board when researching with the Pinterest browser button . I used to have lots of tabs open on my laptop or scraps of paper floating around my home with websites written down. Now I can just click on the pin I saved and read the article when I am ready.
  • Remember Pins are linked to articles. Take the time to read the ones that interest you and you will probably learn new things about your destination.
  • Use Pinterest as a trip organiser, from where to find great flight deals or how to pack your luggage for the trip

Pinterest Accounts/boards we love

Travel With Meraki

Lonely Planet

ytravelblog

This is my personal favorite social media platform.

I love that the images you find here are some of the most up to date pictures you will find on any search engine and the Instagram community are always so happy to share tips and thoughts with you.

Follow us on Instagram here .

Top Tips for using Instagram to plan your trip

  • Use the search function on your Instagram account. Each tab can help you in a different way.

You could type in a larger search like “Iceland” to get an overview of places that capture your interest then narrow down your search from there to more specific like “ Reykjavik”. It’s like your own personal itinerary maker.

When someone Geotags their image it will come up in your search.

I love this option because not only will you see a place at its best from professional photographers and travelers but you will also get a glimpse of the more natural and everyday side of a destination from other accounts.

Clicking on locations Geotag will bring up a handy map too so you can see where the site is and what’s nearby making it perfect as a journey planner and to help me map my trip.

Here someone may use the #Iceland but show you a really cool spot to eat or hike or show you a place you have never heard of before from other searches. This is a great option when using Instagram as a travel planner to discover exciting new things about a destination

Accounts Tab

If you type in a pace and head to the Account Tab you are likely to discover such inspo treasures as official tourism boards and locals that are passionate about their home.

These accounts are a great source for information about events and local secrets in the areas you want to visit. Make sure you follow the ones you love.

Finding out where residents love to eat and what festivals are on is a great way to experience an area more than the average tourist.

  • Join the convo.

Instagram is a fantastic place to ask questions and have access to thousands of well-informed people.

You could ask a question on the comment section of a photograph you love or if you’re a little shy write them a personal message.

Alternatively, you could create your own post asking for information and advice about a location. Make sure you ask a clear question in your caption and use relevant hashtags to attract attention to the post.

 Facebook

Travel with Meraki Facebook

As we all know people love to share pictures from their travels and Facebook is one of the most common methods to share.

Through personal photographs and shared content, Facebook can give you some great inspiration for travel destinations and the perfect vacation itinerary.

How to plan a vacation with Facebook

  • Follow the pages of travelers. This might be big sites like Trip Advisor or Expedia or more local pages.
  • Join groups dedicated to Travel or a specific area you are interested in.
  • Search for the destination you are interested in and click on the tabs to find Groups, Events, Videos and more for the location you are dreaming of. I’ve discovered photo tours, festivals and seen some amazing videos by using this function, making it a great itinerary planner.
  • Ask. By asking a question on your Facebook you may find out great uncle Vern is an expert on the area…or the guy used to work with at your last job just visited there and knows the best places to eat. Chances are if a direct friend doesn’t know they may have a friend who does.

How travellers use social media

Social media in tourism

We’re all aware that people are highly engaged on social media in their day-to-day lives. However, have you ever wondered about the specific ways in which people use social media regarding travel? In this article, we’ll explore the roles of social media before, during, and after travel. We’ll wrap up with some practical tips on connecting with travellers effectively through social media.”

In this article

Step 1: before travel, step 2: during travel, step 3: after travel, tips to interact with travellers.

A large group of travellers turn to social media as a source of inspiration for their upcoming adventures. In particular Instagram , TikTok and Facebook, in particular, are great sources of travel photos and videos shared by friends, travel bloggers, and influencers. These posts have a profound influence on a traveller’s choice of their next destination.

Remarkably, over 50% of individuals actively engage with pages and content that align with the trips they’re planning. As a travel business it’s important to establish an online visibility to this group. One effective strategy is to consistently share visual content. Show them different aspects of what makes your trips unique like:

  • Destinations
  • Accommodations
  • Tours and excursions
  • Restaurants

By showcasing these elements, you can leave an impression on potential travellers and encourage them to explore the remarkable experiences your tours have to offer.

How travellers use social media during travel

Travellers frequently rely on their smartphones throughout their trips, actively engaging with social media to discover inspiration for their destination. They enthusiastically share their experiences in various forms, including photos and videos of their surroundings, along with reviews of activities and restaurants.

Invite your customers to share their travel experiences in real-time while they are on the go. It’s during these moments that people are most inclined to post freshly captured photos or videos on social media. These user-generated posts effortlessly inspire not only their own friends and family but also your potential customers.

Research shows that people are most influenced by consumer-created content, as opposed to professional brand content and influencer content.

Social media influence

Once travellers return from their trip, they become highly active on social media. They eagerly share their recent experiences and often resharing complete photo albums. This results in a large number of posts on the various social media platforms on which your target group is frequently active. Moreover, many travellers take the time to write detailed reviews of accommodations, activities, and restaurants.

It’s at this stage that you can gently remind them of the value of sharing their after-travel experiences, photos, and videos. Express your enthusiasm for their contributions.

With social media, interaction is key. Use the following practical tips to interact with your target group:

Choose your social media platforms wisely

Start by identifying the social media platforms where your ideal target audience is most active. It’s better to maintain an active presence on a select few platforms rather than spreading yourself thin across numerous ones. Focus on the platforms where your target audience engages the most and where you can consistently share valuable and relevant content. Common platforms in the tourism industry include:

Be available for communication and support

Social media platforms provide an easy means for travellers to reach out and communicate directly with travel businesses. Make sure you’re available to answer their inquiries. Approach every interaction with a friendly and helpful demeanor, and strive to respond promptly to their messages and questions.

Invite travellers to share and tag your business

Encourage your customers to share their travel experiences on social media and invite them to tag your business in their posts. Many travellers are eager to share their trips, and your involvement can be as simple as requesting them to share their experiences. Seek their permission to repost their content on your business page to further engage.

Respond to travellers’ posts and tags

Demonstrate your genuine interest in your customers while they’re traveling by actively engaging with their posts and tags. Take the time to respond, share in their enthusiasm, and celebrate their experiences. This interaction can increase customer loyalty , as travellers are more likely to engage with companies they value and trust.

Ask for reviews and respond to them

Actively seek feedback from your customers by requesting reviews. This feedback is invaluable for assessing and improving your travel experiences. Positive reviews can serve as powerful marketing tools, showcasing your strengths.

When addressing negative reviews, maintain a polite and constructive approach. Resolve issues, communicate the steps you’re taking to fix the situation, and be transparent and honesty. Handling negative feedback professionally can often turn a challenging situation into an opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to customer satisfaction.

Let your voice be heard

Establishing a strong presence on social media, as a travel business, holds immense potential. It’s not just about being there when travelers require assistance; it’s about continuously inspiring them—before, during, and after their trip. Beyond serving as a direct means of communication with travellers, social media offers an invaluable platform for promoting the content you create as part of your content marketing strategy.

Hi Anne & Rik I found this article really useful and fits in perfectly to the social media marketing that we are planning after revamping our website. Cheers

' src=

Glad to hear the article is helpful for your own social media strategy. Are there any topics in particular you’d like to read about regarding your website renewal? We’re always looking for inspiration to write about in the future to help tour operators become better.

Kind regards, Rik

' src=

Hello Rik. Would like to know the best approach for a new tour operator who has not had visitors to write reviews etc how can one get travellers especially to the business page say on Facebook? Thanks.

This is a bit difficult since you need your reviews to be from actual travellers. First things first, your entire business should be ready for your first customers. If you deliver a great tour, they’ll be happy to write you a review.

Until then, try to post excellent content that give social media followers insight in your destinations, offer and business.

Tired of vacationing aimlessly without a plan? It’s time to balance spontaneity with planning and embrace the power of the itinerary. Think of it as your GPS but for your adventures, saving you from missed flights, overspent budgets, and those ‘I wish I had seen that’ moments.

An itinerary is a detailed map that outlines your destinations, activities, accommodations, and transportation. It helps you stay organized, save money, and make the most of your time.

And the best part? You don’t need to be a travel expert to create one. With the right tools and a little planning, anyone can learn how to make an itinerary quickly.

1. Select your destination

2. create a rough structure for your travel itinerary, 3. identify major attractions and activities , 4. plan transportation and accommodation options, 5. leave room for spontaneity and relaxation, 1. divide the city into sections for better planning, 2. research, research, research, 3. maintain a balance between sightseeing and rest, 4. incorporate local culture and cuisine, 5. adapt to unexpected changes, unique itinerary examples, 1. create a comprehensive travel document, 2. map out your travel itinerary, 3. use pre-built itineraries for different types of travels, final tips and suggestions , travel at ease with clickup.

Essential Elements of a Travel Itinerary

With the right itinerary, your dream vacation can become a reality. Here’s what you need to craft the perfect travel plan with all the details:

Consider your interests, budget, and the time of year you want to travel. Are you seeking adventure, relaxation, or the best places to be a digital nomad ? Research the local customs, climate, and any potential visa requirements. You could also get tips from seasoned travel bloggers on choosing the right places.

A Quora user, Angela Becker, says,

I just go wherever I can go the cheapest. Or, as some people like to put it, I let the destination choose me. I go to SkyScanner, fill out the dates I want to travel and my local airport as departure. I leave the destination blank and click search. Then SkyScanner gives me an overview of where I can fly to on these dates for which price. Whichever destination is the cheapest, that’s where I’m going. This way I ended up in many unexpected places but I’ve never been disappointed. Neither has my wallet, I can travel for very little money. The fun of it is that the cheapest destination is always somewhere else, flight ticket prices vary all the time so I always end up in a different destination.

Once you’ve determined the duration of your trip, divide your time between major cities or regions. Reserve enough time in the day for non-sightseeing activities, such as commuting from one attraction to another, taking your meals, pausing for rest and recharge, etc. A flexible itinerary also allows for spontaneous adventures.

Feel free to leave some days open for unexpected discoveries or to relax and enjoy your surroundings. Use travel management software to create a rough itinerary layout.

While popular attractions are worth exploring, consider venturing off the beaten path. Research lesser-known gems, local festivals, or unique experiences that align with your interests. This will make your trip truly unique and memorable:

  • Talk to locals: Ask locals for recommendations on hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path activities
  • Join a tour: Guided tours can be a great way to learn about a destination’s history and culture
  • Consider volunteering: Research how to work remotely and travel . If you want to give back, consider volunteering for a local organization. You can check out platforms like Workaway that offer travelers a chance to stay with local families in exchange for skills and volunteer work that helps the family

Choose transportation options that suit your budget and travel style. Check out prices for flights, trains, buses, or even renting a car in advance as part of a road trip itinerary.

For accommodations, explore hotels, hostels, homestays, or vacation rentals. Research reviews and compare prices to find the best fit. You can also go for unconventional stay options like Couchsurfing, which allows people to connect with locals worldwide and stay on their couches or spare rooms for free while experiencing a new culture, meeting like-minded people, and saving money on accommodation.

  • Consider the distance between destinations: If you’re planning to visit multiple cities, it’s important to factor in the distance between them when choosing transportation
  • Think about your comfort level: If you’re not comfortable driving in a foreign country, you may want to consider taking public transportation or booking a tour
  • Research different accommodation options: There are a variety of accommodation options available, so it’s essential to do your research to find the best fit for your budget and preferences

While a well-planned and detailed itinerary provides structure, it leaves room for spontaneity. Allow for unplanned adventures, unexpected encounters, and moments of relaxation. Embrace the flexibility that travel offers and let the journey unfold naturally.

A Quora user, Bob Swindell , says,

Keep it simple each day. Designate travel days (getting from city A to city B) and don’t plan activities on those days. If you have extra time at the end of your destination that day after travel and travel and getting settled into your accommodations, do something spontaneous that you may have wanted to do but didn’t plan to do. That way if you don’t have the time because travel took too long or you were feeling tired or sick at your hotel and need a day to recover, you won’t feel stressed and disappointed for missing one of your planned items.

Making a Comprehensive Travel Itinerary

Planning a trip can be both exciting and overwhelming. With so many destinations and countless activities to consider, it’s easy to feel lost in the planning process. Let’s see how to incorporate all the essential elements of an itinerary when planning for your next trip.

Think of your destination as a city divided into neighborhoods. By organizing it this way, you can create a more manageable itinerary.

For example, you might divide a city into historical, cultural, shopping, and natural areas. This will help you plan your activities more efficiently and avoid backtracking.

Imagine you’re a detective on a mission to uncover the hidden gems of your destination. Access online resources such as travel channels on YouTube and Instagram for expert opinions, travel vlogs, and things to keep in mind.

Travel guides and forums may also prove helpful in gathering information and insights.

Guidebooks, especially, can be invaluable tools for trip planning, offering a wealth of information on destinations, attractions, accommodations, transportation, and local culture.

Here are some scenarios where they can be particularly beneficial:

  • Initial research: When you’re just starting to plan your trip, guidebooks provide a comprehensive overview of destinations, including must-see attractions, cultural insights, and practical information like transportation and accommodations
  • Offline access: If you’re traveling to areas with limited internet access, having a physical or PDF guidebook ensures you have reliable information at your fingertips without needing Wi-Fi
  • Curated recommendations: Guidebooks are often written by experienced travelers or locals with firsthand area knowledge. This can be more reliable than some online sources, which might be outdated or biased
  • In-depth information: For detailed historical, cultural, and practical information, guidebooks often go beyond what you might find in a quick online search. They can provide context that enhances your travel experience
  • Personal souvenir: A guidebook can become a personal memento of your trip, filled with notes, highlights, and memories

In addition to relying on these resources, consider taking tips from family and friends who may have visited the same places before you.

Thorough research on everything from local attractions to travel dates and accommodations will help you create a clear picture of your trip and avoid nasty surprises.

Remember, travel isn’t all about reaching the destination; it’s equally about enjoying the journey. While it’s tempting to pack your itinerary with activities, it’s crucial to maintain a balance between sightseeing and rest.

Overexertion can lead to fatigue and reduce your enjoyment of the trip. Incorporate downtime into your schedule to relax, recharge, and savor your experiences.

A Reddit user, bmblbe2007 , says,

I plan stops and rest periods throughout the day and no more than 4 activities in a day. I also try to rest at least 30 minutes between activities. For instance, on my next trip to London, one of the days will look like: Visiting Buckingham Palace in the morning, Full sit down lunch for at least an hour, Shopping in and near Hatchards for 1.5 hours, Rest for tea for 30 minutes, National gallery for 2 hours, Pub dinner for 1 hour, Ghost bus tour 2 hours, Drinks and card games at hotel lobby til bed time.

Think of your trip as an opportunity to step into someone else’s shoes. By immersing yourself in the local culture and cuisine, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the destination.

Visit local markets, try traditional dishes, attend cultural events, and interact with locals.

A Reddit user, travelerf1902 , says,

I really like to go in local markets. I like to see what people buy and what are the products of that place. I also like to visit parks and squares and go to a church for mass.

Life is full of surprises, and so is travel. To prepare for potential disruptions, build flexibility into your itinerary.

Leave some days open for spontaneous activities or to adjust your plans if necessary. Also, consider having backup options for attractions or accommodations in case of unforeseen circumstances like bad weather or tour cancellations.

By being mindful of these factors, you’ll be able to make the most of those hard-earned vacations!

10 Tips For A Perfect Travel Social Media Marketing Strategy

Last Updated on April 14, 2024 by The Digital Travel Expert

How do you build a travel social media marketing strategy that conveys the right message to the right target audience and addresses their travel pain points?

First thing first, how has social marketing changed the way we travel?

In the digital era, the travel and hospitality industry has been evolving at an unprecedented pace. Traditional marketing methods are quickly making way for digital media marketing, compelling hotels, travel agencies, and tour operators to adapt and innovate.

But how do you effectively build a travel social media marketing strategy? Like in our previous post about travel SEO strategy , this article will go through steps to consider when building a travel marketing strategy that aligns with your brand and niche.

Table of Contents

10 Steps to Building a Successful Travel Marketing Strategy

Any digital marketing plan starts with defining your goal. Your goal might be brand awareness or conversion, but in general social media is best for the first two stages of the marketing funnel. Once the goal is defined, the next steps to building a successful travel social marketing strategy will require you to have your target audience and understand their preferences and interests.

This involves conducting thorough research to identify the platforms where your audience is most active, whether it’s Instagram, Facebook, or Pinterest. Next, you create compelling and visually appealing content that showcases the unique vacation experiences and destinations your hotel or travel brand offers. Let’s explore every step of travel social marketing in detail.

1. Identifying the Right Social Media Platforms

When developing your social marketing strategy for travel brands, the first step is to identify the platforms most used by your target audience. Facebook, with its billions of users, is a must for most businesses. Instagram travel marketing ‘s visual nature makes it ideal for showcasing destinations, accommodations, and local attractions. Twitter can be great for quick updates and engaging in conversations, while LinkedIn can help you establish connections in the industry.

2. Creating Engaging Travel Social Media Content

Like in travel SEO marketing , Content is king in the digital marketing world. When it comes to crafting your content plan, it should be a mix of promotional, educational, and entertaining content.

  • Promotional content: Share special offers, discounts, or exclusive packages. Highlight your unique selling propositions but ensure it doesn’t come off as pushy.
  • Educational content: Share travel tips, must-visit places, local customs, or any information that would enrich your audience’s travel experience. Providing valuable insights establishes you as an expert in your field.
  • Entertaining content: Interesting anecdotes, breathtaking photos, or engaging travel tales can get your audience excited about their next trip. This is not social media addiction:)

Is there a digital transformation and travel culture that should govern social media influencer marketing partnerships?

Remember, your content should align with your brand’s personality and engage your audience. Vary your formats between videos, images, infographics, and stories.

3. The Role of a Social Media Marketer

A skilled marketer can turn your social presence from an afterthought into a major revenue driver. They are the architects of your social content plan, responsible for crafting posts, scheduling content , engaging with the audience, and analyzing performance metrics.

In essence, a digital travel marketer ensures that your brand’s voice is heard and respected, your customers are satisfied, and your business goals are achieved.

4. Monitoring and Adapting Your Strategy

Social media marketing isn’t a “set it and forget it” type of strategy. It requires continuous monitoring and adaptation. Keep an eye on your metrics – likes, shares, comments, followers, website clicks, etc. Use these insights to understand what works and what doesn’t, and tweak your strategy accordingly.

Don’t be afraid to experiment. Trends change quickly, so stay updated and adapt your strategy to ride the wave of these changes.

5. Engaging with the Audience

Interaction is a vital aspect of any social media marketing strategy . It’s not enough to simply push out content; you need to engage with your audience as well. Respond to comments, encourage discussion, and consider creating polls or contests to boost engagement. Being accessible and responsive can foster a sense of community and loyalty, making your followers more likely to convert into customers.

6. Utilizing User-Generated Content

Your customers are your best advertisers. Travelers love sharing their experiences online, so why not incorporate user-generated content into your strategy?

It’s a great way to foster engagement and create authenticity around your brand. Encourage customers to share their experiences using a branded hashtag and feature these posts on your social profiles. It’s a win-win situation: you get authentic and cost-effective travel content , and your customers get recognition.

7. Leveraging Travel Influencer Partnerships

In the world of travel social media marketing , influencers can be a powerful tool. Partnering with influencers who align with your brand can help you reach a more prominent, engaged audience. While celebrities can have a massive reach, don’t overlook micro-influencers. They often have a smaller but highly engaged following and can drive excellent results.

8. Implementing Travel Social Media Advertising

While organic reach is important, social platforms offer sophisticated advertising options to help you reach a larger, targeted audience. Use them to promote your special deals, boost your top-performing posts, or target users who are planning their next holiday.

9. Building a Consistent Brand Voice

It is important to keep your brand voice consistent across the platforms you use . Your brand voice communicates your values through your online and offline messages, and customer service as well. It’s a reflection of your brand’s personality and values. Whether you’re serious and professional, fun and quirky, or helpful and friendly, your voice should resonate with your target audience and be consistent in every post, comment, and reply.

10. Staying Updated with Social Media Trends

Stay abreast of the latest social travel trends and updates. Platforms regularly roll out new features, such as Instagram’s Reels or LinkedIn’s Stories. Being an early adopter of these features can give you an edge over your competitors.

Booking.com Launches New AI Trip Planner to Enhance Travel Planning Experience

Booking.com_AI Trip Planner

AMSTERDAM, 27 June 2023 - Booking.com, one of the world’s leading digital travel platforms, has announced its new AI Trip Planner, which will launch in beta to a selection of US travelers in the company’s app on June 28. Built upon the foundation of Booking.com’s existing machine learning models that recommend destination and accommodation options to millions of travelers on the platform every day, the AI Trip Planner is also partially powered by large language model (LLM) technology from OpenAI’s ChatGPT API to create a new conversational experience for people to start their trip planning process.

A new way to search and explore on Booking.com

Travelers can ask the AI Trip Planner general travel-related questions, as well as more specific queries to support any stage of their trip planning process, including scoping out potential destinations and accommodation options, providing travel inspiration based on the individual traveler’s needs and requirements, as well as creating itineraries for a particular city, country or region.

More tailored and relevant travel recommendations

Travelers can easily chat with the pilot AI Trip Planner to describe what they’re looking for in broad or specific terms, ask questions and refine their search in real time, with new options surfaced in just a matter of seconds. From looking for inspiration on romantic beach destination options in the Caribbean to zeroing in on a specific list of vacation homes for a family of four, with air conditioning and a pool, the AI Trip Planner makes recommendations in a quick, conversational way.

Integrated travel planning experience

The AI Trip Planner takes the trip planning process one step further by providing travelers with a visual list of destinations and properties, including Booking.com’s pricing information, with deep-links to view more details. Travelers can go back and forth between their chat with the AI Trip Planner and the Booking.com app interface as they consider options for their trip. With just a tap on any accommodation they are interested in, they can complete the reservation, as the AI Trip Planner is directly integrated into the accommodation booking experience in the Booking.com app.

“Our primary aim at Booking.com has always been to leverage technology to make travel easier,” said Glenn Fogel, CEO of Booking.com . “The recent developments with generative AI are accelerating the work we’ve been doing for years with machine learning to enhance and improve every aspect of the customer experience on our platform, whether it’s optimizing the right order to display a hotel’s photos to surfacing the most relevant reviews. Our new AI Trip Planner is simply the next step in our ongoing journey to explore how we can bring even more value, and hopefully enjoyment, to the entire trip planning process.”  “Our new AI Trip Planner provides us with some really exciting possibilities to help our customers plan and search for travel options in a very natural, human way,” said Rob Francis, CTO of Booking.com . “Oftentimes, people are asked to adapt to the confines of technology to do what they want, but with generative AI, we’re able to start having scalable, one-to-one conversations with our customers on their terms, much like how you would begin to talk about planning a trip with your partner or friends. It’s just the beginning, but we have lots of runway here to explore in order to innovate and connect the travel experience further on Booking.com, all in a safe, ethical and inclusive way.” Beginning on June 28, the beta AI Trip Planner will become available to a growing percentage of Booking.com Genius members in the United States over the coming weeks. This means that US travelers must be signed in to their Booking.com account in the app and have their language settings set to English to access the new travel planning tool.

About Booking.com: Part of Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: BKNG), Booking.com’s mission is to make it easier for everyone to experience the world. By investing in the technology that helps take the friction out of travel, Booking.com’s marketplace seamlessly connects millions of travelers with memorable experiences every day. 9 Mistakes to Avoid in the Maldives

What you need to know before heading to the idyllic collection of more than a thousand islands.

social media trip planner

The Republic of Maldives, a collection of more than a thousand islands in the Indian Ocean, is known for clear turquoise waters, endless white beaches, and of course, luxurious overwater bungalows — the ideal (and often literal) jumping-off point for unrivaled snorkeling, swimming, and diving.

While there's no single right way to experience the Maldives, there are several ways you might go wrong. So whether you're still in the planning stages — or already lounging by your infinity pool in the Baa Atoll — here are nine mistakes to avoid in the Maldives.

1. Visiting Only One Island

An archipelago of nearly 1,200 islands — the vast majority uninhabited — the Maldives tends to favor a "one island, one resort" approach to hotel development. So you could all too easily journey across the world to see only one tiny, albeit stunning, islet — and maybe a bit of Malé, the capital you'll fly in and out of. Try not to let that happen: Whether you charter a boat, take a day tour to a nearby atoll, or divide your time between two resorts, make sure to get in some island-hopping while you're here.

2. Assuming the Maldives Can’t Be Budget-friendly

The Maldives has a well-earned reputation for being ultra-lavish, but visiting on a budget is certainly possible. Even the airfare isn't prohibitively expensive, with roundtrip prices dipping below $1,000 for much of the year. To cut down on expenses when you arrive, stay at a four-star hotel such as the Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma or a local guest house.

As for activities on a budget, there are many ways to immerse yourself in local beauty that don't involve a chartered yacht or helicopter. For starters, you can participate in reef restoration initiatives — many of them run by affordable resorts such as Reethi Beach Resort , where the ongoing coral propagation program includes periodic hands-on opportunities for guests. And while folks staying at a resort may be able to snorkel along the house reefs, anyone opting for a rental home can snorkel on select public beaches instead. Plus, staying in a rental home or guesthouse generally gives you access to experiences you can't put a price on: those that revolve around local life (see item number 3 below).

3. Missing Out on Local Culture

Because the Maldives tends to be known abroad as a beach destination, its cultural offerings are often overlooked. But in this unique melting pot of Sri Lankan, Indian, Malaysian, Middle Eastern, Indonesian, and African influences, getting to know only the local resorts and reefs would be a big miss. So check out a music or dance performance, try some local cuisine, take a day trip to a fishing village, and never pass up the opportunity to sail anywhere (even from reception to your room) on a small, traditional wooden dhoni.

4. Not Considering a Liveaboard for Part of Your Trip

Offering sea safaris around the clear waters and teeming reefs of the Maldives, liveaboards come with a wide range of accommodations and facilities, plus professionals who range from dive and surf instructors to sommeliers. You can even rent your own yacht, houseboat, or small cruising vessel, and customize the staff to your requirements, perhaps with a massage therapist or yoga instructor. That said, island-hopping through this archipelago is so inherently de-stressing, you may find wellness pros superfluous.

5. Not Going Until Your Honeymoon

Thanks to its profusion of secluded private islands, dreamy overwater bungalows, and unrivaled sunsets, the Maldives will always rank as a top honeymoon destination. But this isn't a place you need to save for the ultimate romantic getaway. The Maldives is just as well-suited to a girls' trip or family escape. In fact, many resorts in the Maldives keep one-upping each other on the family-friendly front. There's everything from a nearly 15,000-square-foot kids' club ( The Den at Soneva Fushi ) to an "adult-free zone" restaurant ( the Petit Bistro at Avani+ Fares Maldives ).

6. Forgetting the Reef-safe Sunscreen at Home

Here at the equator, the UV rays are famously strong, so your sunscreen should be high SPF and constantly reapplied, especially when you're in and out of the water all day. But given what lies beneath — that is, endless tracts of coral and the surrounding Technicolor marine life — your sunscreen should be reef-safe , too. While the Maldives hasn't (yet) joined the growing list of destinations that officially ban chemical sunscreens (only certain physical sunscreens are considered reef-safe), at least one hospitality group with a Maldivian property has banned chemical sunscreens brand-wide: Six Senses .

7. Not Considering an All-inclusive Resort

Though secluded islands have their benefits, easy access to a wide variety of foods and spirits isn't one. To avoid the sticker shock of the resulting imports, travelers to the Maldives often choose all-inclusive resorts. Yes, the nightly rates and fees may exceed others, but many guests find that bundling in the cost of food and drink is the most... palatable approach here.

8. Not Combining the Maldives With a Trip to Asia or the Middle East

For all the seclusion it offers, the Maldives is shockingly accessible. You'll find regular direct flights from, say, Colombo (an hour and a half), Dubai (four hours), or Kuala Lumpur (four and a half hours), so you can easily pair a Maldivian interlude with a trip to Sri Lanka, the Emirates, or Malaysia, among other Asian and Middle Eastern hubs. Check Malaysia Airlines, Etihad, Emirates, and Qatar Airways — for starters — to find deals and routes that make a multistop trip seem eminently doable.

9. Skipping the Bioluminescent Views

While the daytime views get all the screensaver glory, nights are no less magical in the Maldives, especially along the sometimes naturally illuminated shores. Somewhat rare and elusive — but perhaps best seen from April to November — this ethereal light show is caused by visiting bioluminescent plankton that create a glow-in-the-dark effect at the water's edge.

Celebrity Crypto Stings: Beware the Hype

social media trip planner

Dear Reader,

Do you know DJ Khaled?

How about Logan Paul? Maybe Lindsay Lohan or Kim Kardashian?

If you’re wondering what any of these names have to do with each other, there’s a simple answer:

Each of these celebrities has had their names used in a cryptocurrency scam.

Now it might be tempting to think of these as standalone occurrences, but the list goes on.

50 Cent… Metallica… Lionel Messi…

  • Celebrity crypto “launches” have totaled well over half a billion dollars in losses to date  for those investors who were too eager and willing to blindly follow their favorite idols.

Celebrities looking to cash in on their fame with endorsement deals is a tale as old as time, but the association with crypto is more recent and noteworthy.

And it’s the symptom of a larger trend in the scam “industry”.

From Call Centers to Instagram

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak first hit the economy, causing a recession with far-reaching aftershocks, scammers have been on the rise.

As the chart shows, reported losses to scams in the US more than quadrupled year-on-year through 2021.

social media trip planner

Losses continued to grow at a breakneck pace, slowing somewhat around the end of 2022 before picking back up through 2024.

Outside the U.S., criminals exploited the coronavirus outbreak to target victims online.

  • In the UK, impersonation scams doubled, and investment scams rose by 32% during the pandemic.
  • In Canada, money reported lost to investment scams has  gone up 20x  from 2019 to 2023.

What began as a nascent industry has matured, with scammers refining their methods and targets to adapt to a rapidly evolving world.

Social Media Stickup

And nowhere is this more evident than in the below chart depicting the methods utilized by scammers to contact their victims:

social media trip planner

While all the different contact methods used by scammers to steal money from their victims have seen growth…

None have ballooned so drastically as  social media , which stole the top spot from phone scams in early 2021.

  • 31% of all money lost by US scam victims so far this year has been through social media – up from 13% just prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Now of course, there are all sorts of reasons people use social media, but it’s also the top method for celebrities to interact with their fans these days.

George Crypto Parker: He’s Got a Bridge NFT to Sell You

The shift towards social media as the preferred medium for scamming is just half the picture.

The other half, of course, has to do with the growth of crypto scams.

Even though the token and meme coin crazes are well past their heydays, new NFT projects and ICOs are still getting pumped out behind the scenes.

Take a look at the chart below:

social media trip planner

  • Just a year after the corona outbreak, investment scams skyrocketed to become the #1 source of money lost to scams in the US.

Nowadays, over 40% of all money lost to scammers is due to some type of investment scam.

Of course, “regular” pump-and-dumps still exist. And yes, plenty of celebrities use their status as social media influencers to manipulate stocks as well, despite the SEC’s best efforts.

But according to a report released earlier this year by the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre,  over half of investment fraud reports and money losses are attributed to fraudulent crypto investment platforms.

Meanwhile, at the same time:

social media trip planner

Usage of crypto as scammers’ preferred method of payment has also shot to the moon in recent years, briefly taking the top spot before settling comfortably in second place, behind bank transfers.

Think You’re a Crypto Wiz? Think Again

Long story short: if you come across an investment opportunity that’s crypto-related, or involves payment through cryptocurrency, approach with a healthy  dose of skepticism.

  • Direct investments into Bitcoin itself, other major altcoins like Ethereum, and stablecoins like USDT are, generally speaking, fair game—but for anything beyond that, you should automatically assume there’s a good chance you’ll lose your entire investment.

And if you found it on social media, it’s probably best to go ahead and write it off entirely.

Doubly so if it came from an influencer or celebrity.

Now, there might be some of you young bucks out there reading this who think that it’s only the boomers getting scammed by all this new fancy crypto tech they don’t quite understand.

Sorry to break it to you, but the data disagrees.

As it turns out, all that life experience does count for something…

The older you are, the less likely your chances of actually losing money when you encounter a scam.

Unfortunately, older folks generally also have more money available to them, often in the form of retirement savings. So when they do fall for a scam, they lose more on average.

If you’re going to take anything away from this article, let it be these three rules

  • Stay away from unconventional crypto investments, and anything that requires you to pay in crypto.
  • Don’t trust investment ideas on social media.
  • Any celebrity or influencer offering investment advice should be ignored.

It’s hard enough getting by these days as it is.

Don’t let some two-bit scammer, or worse—some vein celebrity who wants to add a couple million more dollars to their pile of cash make life harder for you.

'Total disaster' hits Mike Lindell's attempted social media stock rollout: reporter

'Total disaster' hits Mike Lindell's attempted social media stock rollout: reporter

Mike Lindell is trying to raise some cash for his FrankSpeech social media platform by making it a publicly traded stock, but former Daily Beast journalist Zachary Petrizzo says that it's not going to plan so far.

Writing on Twitter , Petrizzo contends that "MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell’s attempted Frank Speech stock rollout has been a total disaster," which he says "started with him telling his followers the incorrect ticker for the penny stock that trades OTC.

"Confused MAGA followers who couldn’t find it on Robinhood ... got mad at Lindell," he reported.

And that's not all: Petrizzo also notes that Lindell's merger partner, a media holding company called InCapta, Inc., has an accumulated deficit of nearly $150 million.

ALSO READ: Republicans resurrect an old racist ruling to disqualify Kamala Harris

And to cap it all off, Petrizzo writes, "It’s clear that Lindell has been struggling with the concept of NYSE v. OTC markets. (Oversimplification, but OTC markets are like a flea market compared to NYSE being a department store. At a flea market, more potential for fake merchandise, i.e., pump & dump schemes.)"

As Gizmodo reported last week , Lindell is taking FrankSpeech public through "a reverse stock split, in which a company’s shares are consolidated."

Forbes has described this kind of maneuver as "rare among large, stable companies and more typical of those struggling to maintain their listing on exchanges with minimum price requirements."

FrankSpeech is a social media platform Lindell created in 2021, positioning it as an alternative to mainstream social media platforms that he believes censor conservative voices and restrict free speech.

Since its launch, FrankSpeech has been embroiled in several controversies. The platform has faced criticism for allowing the spread of misinformation and extremist content. Lindell has also repeatedly used FrankSpeech to solicit donations for his legal battles against voting machine companies like Dominion Voting Systems, which have sued him for defamation over his election fraud claims.

Stories Chosen For You

Do you think vice president kamala harris should be the next president, trump rushes to control fallout after damaging report on his new hampshire campaign.

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday rushed to contain the fallout of a damaging report about his 2024 presidential campaign's chances in New Hampshire .

The drama began after Tom Mountain, a Trump campaign insider from Massachusetts, wrote an email saying that New Hampshire was "no longer a battleground state" and that Trump was "sure to lose by an even higher margin" than in 2020, when he lost it by seven points to President Joe Biden .

Trump also lost New Hampshire to Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016, albeit by a much smaller amount of less than one percentage point.

Mountain was quickly removed from his position as a leading campaign volunteer, but the former president himself decided to engage in some damage control in a Truth Social post claiming that his campaign in the Granite State was doing just fine.

"Comrade Kamala Harris sees there are problems for her campaign in New Hampshire because of the fact that they disrespected it in their primary and never showed up," Trump wrote . "Additionally, the cost of living in New Hampshire is through the roof, their energy bills are some of highest in the country, and their housing market is the most unaffordable in history. I protected New Hampshire's First-In-The-Nation Primary and ALWAYS will! To my friends in New Hampshire, get out and vote TRUMP. Together, we will make your State and America Strong, Safe, and Prosperous AGAIN!"

Despite Trump's protestations, however, polling shows that Mountain's analysis of the New Hampshire electorate appears to be accurate, as Harris currently holds a lead there of seven points according to polling averages at 538 .

Byron Donalds scrambles to change topic as CNN host puts him on spot over Trump flip-flop

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) defended Donald Trump after the former president said he planned to support Florida's abortion ban despite saying six weeks did not give women enough time to make a decision.

During an interview on Tuesday, CNN host Phil Mattingly told Donalds that Trump had sent mixed messages on abortion because of a "gut instinct" that it was problematic for Republicans.

"I think he's been reported to have said this was a problem in the 2022 midterm elections for Republicans," the CNN host said. "There's also where anti-abortion advocates are on this, which to some degree you've heard them over the course of the last several days, be very frustrated with where the former president is."

"Wish he would sound more like, as one told me, his first-term version of Donald Trump," Mattingly added. "What do you say to those reliably Republican voters who are concerned on this issue?"

"I would tell those voters in the state of Florida and around the country that President Trump's been very clear when it comes to abortion, specifically to Florida," Donalds stated. "He thinks that the six-week ban is not enough weeks.

"But at the same time, the ballot initiative is far too radical for the state of Florida."

Donalds quickly pivoted to another topic.

"But I think it's important for voters in swing states to understand that the ballot initiative in Florida has no bearing on the cost of food in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan or anywhere else," the lawmaker opined.

Mattingly also asked Donalds about Trump's promise to make IVF accessible for free.

"Is that something you could support?" he asked Donalds.

ALSO READ: Dem leaders keep shrugging off Moms for Liberty — even as Trump keeps grooming them

"Well, obviously, it's something that is possible to support," Donalds said. "Depends on the details."

"But at the end of the day, the core issues facing the American people are the cost of food and housing."

Prank blamed for spy panic that saw Trump offices evacuated: report

Donald Trump’s Florida campaign offices were evacuated last week over a prank plastic listening device that can be bought for less than $14 on Amazon, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

The offices in West Palm Beach were emptied as cops swept in amid reports of beeping under a worker’s desk — and Trump officials reported finding three devices.

But the police report obtained by the Times Tuesday shows it was a hoax rather than an act of espionage.

“FOUND POTENTIAL LISTENING DEVICES // HEARD BEEPING BY DESKS // INTERNAL SECURITY ALSO FOUND DEVICE,” the report read. It says the person who called cops, “THINKS THEY HAVE FOUND LISTENING DEVICES ‘BUGS; IN THE OFFICE.’”

The report continued that 50 people were evacuated while the whole office was swept, but only the plastic prank devices were found.

ALSO READ: Why Trump’s Arlington controversy is actually a crime

It concluded that security officials reported it to be a "prank."

It’s unknown who placed the devices in the office, the Times reported.

Last month, the FBI confirmed that Iran had attempted to hack into the campaigns of Trump and President Joe Biden .

LIFE UPDATE

Julia is hiking in August 2024.

It's been a bit of a hectic week, and I've been in constant catch-up mode, having to solve many problems and handle numerous tedious tasks and minutiae. On top of that, I've had more doctor's appointments in the last 30 days than I'd like. I was unexpectedly diagnosed with severe anemia , so serious that it needs immediate attention, and it cannot be put on a back burner.

My July lab results were alarming, with nearly all of my red blood cell metrics flagged with High Alert notifications. For example, my Ferritin 5 ng/mL (normal range should be 15-150), Iron 12 ug/dL (normal range should be 17-159) , Iron Saturation 3% (normal range should be 15-55%), Hemoglobin 7.7 g/dL (normal range is 11.1 - 15.9). Anemia is typically categorized as mild, moderate, or severe. Unfortunately, all my numbers fall into the "severe" category, which explains why my doctor kept persistently trying to reach me on the phone in the last 3 weeks.

Living at 9,000 feet, my red blood cell count should be high (as it usually has been), but right now, I'm operating with the bare minimum. In fact, my red blood cell count is currently much lower than it should be, even for someone at sea level. My iron absorption is almost nonexistent at 3% (compared to the normal 50%), leading to dangerously low hemoglobin levels. This means there's hardly any oxygen being carried through my blood to my lungs, muscles, and other vital organs. It all makes sense now—I've been consistently 20 minutes slower on my usual hikes and couldn't push myself harder without nearly passing out. This has been happening for a year and a half now. My initial instinct was to ignore all of this for a while with the hope that the anemia resolves itself on its own since I have so much on my plate right now and so much to catch up on. But then I realized that would be foolish—it could actually be life-threatening. So, I’ve started taking it seriously by taking supplements, eating plenty of red meat, and regularly incorporating chicken liver, beets, Vitamin C into my diet to boost my iron levels.

Unfortunately, because of all that hecticness, I got thrown off my usual routines, which I always find frustrating.

On a brighter note, even though I've been bogged down with many tedious tasks and dealing with my anemia that showed up out of nowhere, I'm happy to say I'm finally catching up. I've started filming new recipes and have already photographed four new amazing recipes with red meat, with plans to do many more this week. And, of course, I've made sure to get outside and hike three times a week—that always helps me stay grounded.

Julia is hiking in August 2024

I wish everybody a great week filled with delicious food, fun conversations at the dinner table, good mood, energy, and happiness. Be healthy, and do a complete CBC blood test at least once a year!

What To Ask When Selecting an RV Model

When searching for the right RV for your family road trip, it's important to ask the right questions to ensure you select the best model for your needs. Here are some key questions to consider when choosing the right RV:

How many people will the RV need to accommodate, and how much space would you like?

Ensure the RV has enough sleeping arrangements for your entire family.

What are the storage requirements?

Consider how much storage space you will need for luggage, food, and other essentials.

What amenities are essential for your trip?

Make a list of must-have features such as a kitchen, bathroom, air conditioning, and entertainment systems.

What is your budget?

Determine how much you are willing to spend on the rental and factor in additional costs like fuel and campsite fees.

How comfortable are you with driving and maneuvering the RV?

Choose a model that you feel confident driving, especially if you are a first-time renter.

How to Choose an RV Rental for Your Family

Selecting the right RV rental for your family involves careful consideration of your needs and preferences. Here are some tips to help you make the best choice:

Assess Your Family’s Size and Needs:

Choose an RV with adequate sleeping arrangements and space to ensure everyone is comfortable. Check the floor plan when rental RV shopping to find the best fit and ensure it offers enough space.

Prioritize Essential Amenities:

Look for models that include the amenities you need for a pleasant trip, such as a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom facilities, and air conditioning.

Consider the Duration of Your Trip:

For longer trips, you might want an RV with more space and storage, while a smaller model might suffice for weekend trips.

Evaluate the RV’s Driving Ease:

If you are new to RV driving, opt for a model with features that make driving easier, like narrower widths for better maneuverability.

Check Rental Locations:

Ensure the rental location is convenient for pickup and drop-off, and confirm that the RV model you want is available at that location.
